Place Moulay Hassan is a vibrant and picturesque urban square located in Essaouira, offering a strategic location between the Medina and the port. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoy scenic views of the ocean, and feel the delightful sea breeze while indulging in gastronomic experiences at numerous dining spots. The square is known for its collision of desert ruggedness with military grandeur, creating a captivating spectacle especially at dusk.
The Fort is well worth a visit and is worth 50dm entrance fee for adults just underc£4 or €4 as the views from there are amazing The fishing port with the fish market is worth the visit to see. The main squire as plenty going on also with plenty of places to get something to eat

Walking through the vibrant streets of Essaouira's Medina was like stepping back in time. The whitewashed walls, blue-painted doors, and narrow alleyways create a captivating atmosphere that blends history with artistic flair. Local artisans display their handmade crafts and paintings, giving the area a unique bohemian vibe. The bustling markets are full of life, with vendors selling colorful textiles, intricate pottery, and fresh produce. The coastal breeze and the scent of spices make wandering through the maze-like alleys a sensory delight. Don't miss the chance to visit the iconic ramparts, which offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Essaouira is a perfect blend of culture, history, and creativity – a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Moroccan experience.

This is the true heart of Essaouira, a place that never sleeps. There's always something happening here; it's full of people, music, and scents. This isn't a monument you just look at – it's a place that you truly experience. From one side of the square, you enter the narrow streets of the medina, and from the other, you can smell the ocean and see the port. You can sit in one of the many cafés, order a mint tea, and just watch the scene for hours. You'll see vendors, fishermen returning from their catch, and tourists from all over the world wandering about. It has a great, lively atmosphere. It's the essence of the city in one spot. You absolutely have to sit there for a while and soak in the vibe.
Rob K — Google review
In the evening, Essaouira's medina transforms into a lively tapestry of sights and sounds. The whitewashed walls and blue shutters glow under the setting sun, casting a serene ambiance. Street performers fill the air with music, while the scent of grilled seafood from the bustling port mingles with the salty breeze. Locals and visitors alike stroll along the ramparts, enjoying panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean as the sky transitions from golden to twilight hues. The city's vibrant nightlife emerges, offering cozy cafés, rooftop bars, and intimate music venues, making Essaouira a captivating destination after dark.
Abdelkabir B — Google review
Great open space next to the port and medina with multiple uses depending on the time of day and season. A centre for arts and crafts and recreation, and to just sit on the wall and watch the world go by.
Kevin C — Google review
Moulay Hassan Square is the beating heart of Essaouira. It's not just a square, but an open theater that combines the fragrance of history with the beauty of the present. Here, you can feel the true spirit of the city, as the sound of the waves coming from the nearby port harmonizes with the melodies of Gnaoua music playing throughout the square. Adorned with towering palm trees and old-fashioned cafés, the square is open to visitors and residents alike, serving as a meeting point for dreamers and artists. During the day, it bustles with activity, while at night, it transforms into a magical place illuminated by dim lights, a tranquil haven for contemplation and watching life flow peacefully. It is truly a unique work of art that captures the enchanting spirit of Essaouira.
Omar F — Google review
Great place. A lot of things happen here throughout the day. From small bands playing, to big concerts. There are many gift shops, antique shops, cafes around. Definitely worth a visit. I'm not sure if this happens often but on the days I was at this place there was a music festival going on and I had the chance to attend the concerts for free, they were kind of a public event I believe, I didn't see anyone buying tickets anywhere, it was super fun, the concerts only happened at night. In the morning the place is tidied and less crowded.
Eternal M — Google review
Nice big open space with charming venders who will try to sell you fake branded sunglasses and "happy cakes". Next to it is a rocky beach ideal for watching the sunset and eating fleshly barbecued seafood and of course the seafood market

Port
Port de Essaouira is a historic fort with a working fishing port that offers a unique experience for travelers. The port is bustling with activity as local fishermen go out in bright-blue boats at night to catch dorado, prawns, rays, eels, crabs, and beltfish. Visitors can witness the vibrant marketplaces where seafood vendors sell their catch to locals and restaurants. In addition to the lively port, Essaouira boasts traditional Moroccan charm and laid-back beach vibes.
What an interesting, busy, must see Port. It was constructed by the Portuguese in the year 1793 and the current pillars and façade that form part of the gateway are original structures. It is a hive of activity, colour, fishing boats, nets, sardines, seagulls and history.
Ross D — Google review
The Port of Essaouira is more than just a harbor; it's a vibrant tapestry woven with history, culture, and the daily rhythms of maritime life. From the moment you arrive, you're enveloped in an atmosphere that's both bustling and timeless. The air hums with the calls of fishermen, the cries of seagulls circling overhead, and the salty tang of the Atlantic. The iconic sight of the deep blue fishing boats, clustered tightly in the harbor, is instantly captivating. These traditional wooden vessels, often adorned with colorful details, bob gently in the water, creating a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the ancient stone ramparts. This visual spectacle is a photographer's dream, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the golden light bathes the port in a warm glow. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Port of Essaouira is a vital working harbor. You can witness the daily rituals of the local fishing industry firsthand. Observe the fishermen as they mend their nets with skilled hands, a practice passed down through generations. In the late morning, the return of the trawlers is a flurry of activity as the day's catch – often sardines, mackerel, and anchovies – is unloaded. The adjacent fish market comes alive with vendors displaying their fresh bounty, the air filled with the lively bartering and the keen interest of local buyers and restaurateurs. For a truly immersive experience, witnessing the fish auction just outside the port gates is a must-see spectacle of local commerce and tradition. The port's historical significance is palpable. Built in the 18th century by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah, it was strategically designed to open Morocco to international trade. For a time, Essaouira even served as the country's diplomatic capital. The imposing Skala du Port, an 18th-century artillery platform overlooking the harbor, stands as a testament to this rich past. From its ramparts, you can gaze out at the sea, imagining the trading ships of centuries past and appreciating the strategic importance of this coastal stronghold. The blend of European military architecture with North African influences, evident in the design of the port and the surrounding medina, is a unique feature recognized by UNESCO, which designated Essaouira a World Heritage Site. Exploring the port also offers glimpses into the craftsmanship of traditional boat building. Skilled artisans continue to construct and repair the sturdy wooden fishing vessels, using techniques that have been refined over time. This dedication to traditional methods adds another layer of authenticity to the port's character. While the port is a hub of activity, it also exudes a certain charm and tranquility. Strolling along the quays, you can observe the local life unfolding at its own pace. Friendly faces, the rhythmic sounds of the sea, and the timeless atmosphere create a sense of connection to a place deeply rooted in its maritime heritage. In conclusion, a visit to the Port of Essaouira is an enriching and sensory experience. It's a place where history, culture, and the vibrant energy of a working harbor converge to create a truly unforgettable atmosphere. Whether you're captivated by the colorful boats, the bustling fish market, the historical architecture, or simply the sights and sounds of daily life by the sea, the Port of Essaouira leaves a lasting impression. It's a must-see destination for anyone visiting this captivating Moroccan coastal city.

A great variety of fish and seafood in a historical setting and absolutely shockingly unhygienic conditions. The fish on sale may be fresh but the stench and filth are so overpowering, as if no one had cleaned the place since the 16th century.
Floyd C — Google review
The fishermen work here is no joke. I live at the seaside right in front of a market but i wish i could get my fish and seafood in a place like this every week : variety, quality and freshness, at such a bargain it's unbelievable. Sad note : they say it's been a few years they are not able to get everything as before. Some years there's a bit less of this or that. They say 'the planet is getting hurt too much'.
Jonathan S — Google review
A local gave us an impromtu tour of the harbour and took us into a boatyard where the fishing boats were being built. A really enjoyable hour spent looking at the harbour activities in the glorious sunshine.

Seafood market
Essaouira's Fish Market is a bustling hub where seafood from hundreds of fishing boats is traded daily. Anchovies and sardines are among the most popular catches, with fish being boxed up on the spot and loaded into delivery trucks for nearby cities. Visitors can purchase fresh fish at affordable prices, have it cooked in small kitchens/restaurants, and enjoy a feast with salad, olives, and bread. The market offers an authentic experience but may be a bit chaotic in the mornings.
Learn a bit of Arabic. Be patient and pick what you want to eat. Buy. Get it cleaned. Find the place where to eat. They will BBQ it. Wonderful. Just remember that you are going there for the experience.
Mike G — Google review
The fish markets of Essaouria are amazingly busy places. Very slippery and smelly but a fantastic insight into the local industry and how it supports tourism. Lots to see
Kevin C — Google review
Traditional fish market with lots of fresh selection. We wanted to buy our own fish and get a local to cook them. Lots of locals offer this service, but be careful for what you sign up for. Make sure to get the sellers to explain everything including prices. They’re happy to explain. Plate of food for four cost 900 dirhams.
Myles M — Google review
Avoid this place. Visiting a fish market should be a pleasant experience, but here tourists are clearly overcharged. You can get the same quality for a much better price at nearby restaurants. We asked for a small portion of shrimp and calamari, and the staff member told us we would be shown the portion before it was fried and sautéed. That never happened. Instead, we were served a large portion followed by a large bill. Poor communication and misleading service. Not recommended.
Ronja M — Google review
Tourist trap if you choose to have the fish cooked on site. We did this and ended up paying twice as much as in the port area where you will get the same experience, but in a much more pleasant setting.
Ioana C — Google review
Fresh catches of the day, you can buy the seafood and the restaurant there cook it for you. Delicious
Lisa2023 — Google review
TOURIST SCAM! DO NOT EAT HERE. Unless you are a local I would reccomend that no tourist eat here! They have you choose your fish and sit down then they give you the price. The original price for 1 small dorado fish , 1 small squid and some shrimp was almost 400 dh!! Once we told them to take out some sides and the shrimp we still paid 220dh for a very mediocre meal. I have had better fish for much cheaper. We were told by a local we were scammed and should have only paid 50dh in total. Very sad experience as we were very excited to go
Isabella M — Google review
Decide on a purchase with the vendors and make the exchange with them if you intend to take some fish to a restaurant and have them cook it. Beware the touts. You will almost certainly be approached by touts looking to help you with the fish and grill it for you. They WILL take a big premium for this. I recommend that you do not engage with them. MAKE THE PURCHASE YOURSELF WITH THE FISHMONGER AND TAKE IT TO A RESTAURANT OF YOUR CHOOSING FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE.

Bar
Taros is a popular restaurant and bar located above the medina walls, offering stunning views of the ramparts and the beach. The rooftop terrace provides an ideal setting for enjoying sundowner cocktails or sipping on Casablanca lager while taking in the scenery. Designed by John Quinn, the whitewashed terraces exude a Balearic vibe and offer a reasonably priced prix-fixe menu featuring dishes like sea urchins, goat tagine, and smoked fish.
A wonderful spot in the heart of Essaouira! I loved the stunning view, the beautiful design, and the excellent service. Truly a delightful experience with my family — I’ll definitely come back next year!
Amine A — Google review
The oysters were and white wine weren’t not well chilled, the vegetables that were served with the fish are definitely cooked for couscous which was a bummer the fish was well cooked but the veggies ruined it. The service was average but that’s not the staff’s fault, they’re obviously overworked, I would say the place is under staffed, the only thing I didn’t like was that they said they can’t change my beer to Casablanca because of some system, that’s a lousy excuse. I would come back. Nice place with a lot of potentials, should focus on service. The band was good. Toilet was bit dirty.
Hajar — Google review
A good place to come for drinks just before Sunset, well located and spacious. If you come early enough you'll probably manage to get a good seat to chill and enjoy the view. Only 5 classic cocktails on the menu but a good choice of beers, wines and stronger beverages. We didn't get a chance to ear the live music but the guys were definitely getting ready for dinner time. At night it's a different ambience. You can ear the music blasting all around town until 2am during the week. Teenagers and young locals partying hard, half of them barely standing. Don't come if you expect the customers to be well behaved, it's like a student party in there, fun until you reach 25 y.o. Staff is very patient with drunks making a scene (pushing around, yelling, going shirtless..) 4 guys, one hour plus another half at the exit to deal with one who wouldn't cut it out. Just physically controlling him and asking him to leave. That's it. I've seen security guys smash some faces in about 5m for less than that...
Jonathan S — Google review
Amazing vibes at Taros! Taros experience started with sunset on the roof top with great service! Continued with dinner at Cosmo with delicious food and amazing service from Karim, Khadija and warm welcomes from the best hostess Dorine. Follow up with cocktails at the club where Sana makes the best cocktails in Essaouira! And to finish going back upstairs to dance to the groovy songs from the dj! All over great atmosphere! A place to recommand and to be
Andrew E — Google review
We had the worst dining experience ever at this restaurant. The service was nothing short of terrible; the manager was extremely rude and dismissive throughout our visit. The fish we ordered was undercooked and apparentely served despite being raw in parts, which was very disappointing. It’s okay for a drink here, but definitely not for food. To make matters worse, they still charged us for the undercooked dish, which is unacceptable. Also, beware of the giant cockroaches crawling around the place — quite a disturbing sight. One more thing to watch out for is the manager with the fancy mustache; avoid any interaction with him if you don’t want to encounter more issues. Would not recommend this place for dinner at all!
Rimvydas B — Google review
We came for a quick drink and had such a nice time! The hostess was super sweet, the staff was super attentive and they even had a restaurant doggo that was adorable! We loved the live music and the lively atmosphere! We’ll definitely be back and maybe try the food as well.
Sunaina B — Google review
Exceptional service and a wonderful atmosphere. The staff showed great kindness, patience, and genuine care, which made the rooftop experience unforgettable. Their warm attitude and professionalism added a special touch of comfort and love to the evening. Truly appreciated
Oussama T — Google review
Taro’s delivers a solid overall experience, mainly thanks to outstanding service. Our waiter Badar Eddine was a true standout — always smiling, proactive, and perfectly tuned in to what we needed. He recommended a great wine that elevated the whole evening. The food itself is fairly standard, very much tailored to tourists, but the quality of the service genuinely lifts the entire experience. This waiter makes the visit worth it.

Sqala du Port d'Essaouira is a historic port that offers visitors a glimpse into the city's past as a bustling fish port. Tourists can stroll along the old city walls, admire the iconic blue boats, and take in views of the Atlantic coast while exploring the stalls showcasing the day's catch. The honey-colored ramparts of Sqala du Port are a major attraction and have even served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Beautiful historic place, the architecture, the local life, the people — all worthy of a visit. For those who like taking photos, you’ll find plenty of memorable spots :)

It's otherworldly and unspoilt, and feels like standing on a film set. In fact, the film The Lonely Planet with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth was filmed here and, most famously, Game of Thtones. There is a strong breeze coming off the sea but it's refreshing in the heat. Research the history of Essaouira and you will find that you are standing on land with a rich and exciting history. Now a UNESCO heritage sight, it is really worth a visit.
Caron N — Google review
We got a tip from the manager at the hotel where we stayed in Marrakesh to buy fresh fish here at the harbor in Essaouira and have it grilled on the spot so you can eat it right away. We did that, and it was super tasty. Not a fancy, luxurious setting, but it was amazing to watch the fresh fish being grilled right there and then enjoy it with a small salad on the side. Definitely recommended. Essaouira is a cozy fishing and harbour town with lots of small shops, a lively atmosphere and that warm vibe that makes you want to wander around for hours.

I had a wonderful experience at this beachfront restaurant. The location is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking views of the sea and a lovely island just across the horizon — the perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. The ambiance is serene and refreshing, making it an ideal spot to unwind, especially during sunset. The staff “Specially MOHAMMED”was welcoming and attentive, and the service was smooth throughout. The food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. Whether you’re coming for a quiet lunch or a romantic evening dinner, this place is a hidden gem on the coast. Highly recommended!

Really beautiful place if you like sunset then I highly recommend it It's better to book before coming.. The place is really big and there are many tables.. but it can be crowded sometimes. Despite that, it is a quiet place. 🚧Note they have pork in some recipes.

I didn’t like this place at all. The service was very slow, and the staff were not friendly. The food came cold and didn’t taste good. It’s also too expensive for what you get. The restaurant looks nice, but the quality is really bad. I would not go back or recommend Ocean Vagabond to anyone.

I rarely share stuff I experienced. But this bar is exceptional. It is a place of love. A place where a patient waiter led an elderly guest to the toilet and tidied her hair like a loving grandchild. Where dads kiss their children and mums pop baloons, and surfers enjoy the end of a day, and nervous couples new together cuddle uneasingly but promisingly. Where even the cat exudes love. Staff play football in the bar between shifts. Amazing staff, great food, great music, astonishing location. Come here to be cured of cynicism.

A must go to for an Essaouira visit. Best sunset spot. Drinks are reasonably priced and pizza is a super delicious flat crust style. Definitely recommend the Kefta one. Service is phenomenal but the best part is the ocean side camels and horses right outside the window. Live music. Great atmosphere. This place has everything I’ve ever wanted!

Patisserie
Pâtisserie Driss, a local institution established in 1929, is a well-loved café located near the entrance of Hassan Square. It offers an extensive selection of French and Moroccan pastries, along with delightful breakfast options and the popular Moroccan nuss-nuss. The café's cozy atmosphere is adorned with native Essaouira artwork.
The decor is truly magnificent. We had our dessert in the beautifully decorated patio. We enjoyed various cakes with mint tea. They were good, made with shortbread but with a special recipe. The atmosphere of the place is really warm, as if transported out of time! The staff is pleasant! It's better to go in the morning when you'll have much more choice for pastries! It's worth the long wait in line.

Really good service and kind people. The coffee are good and inexpensive. The pastries next door are great too and affordable. NB: the cafe toilet is free to use for patrons and payment is voluntary.

It seems this place is highly rated but one cake I got was very dry and just a simple plain sponge and the other was better and had cream inside but nothing to write home about so either I picked the two worst cakes here or it really isn’t that good.

A place that travels you through times with its beautiful paintings and diverse flavours. Very low prices and tasty pastries make this a local favourite. The terrace in the back is a nice place to soak in the sun without much wind!

Located in the heart of the Medina, this patisserie has many dishes, both sweet and savory. The interior is full of art. A must visit when in Essaouira!

I do understand all the vibe about this place. It opens early, it offers plenty of cakes and pastries and their breakfast menus are amazing! If you like croissants, pain au chocolat it’s perfect for you but if you want to change take the bread (Moroccan) butter and jam breakfast menu! Their semi-hidden terrace in the back is incredible.

Salut Maroc is a historic riad located in the heart of Essaouira's old Medina, offering a blend of Islamic patterns, vibrant colors, and an eclectic mix of modern and antique furniture. The hotel provides picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean and the historic ramparts of the old Medina. Beyond its charming interior, guests can enjoy informal dining on a terrace with stunning ocean views.
From the moment we arrived, our experience at Salut Maroc was nothing short of exceptional. The staff welcomed us warmly, check-in was seamless, and the attention to detail throughout the property instantly set the tone for a luxurious stay. The room was beautifully designed—spotlessly clean, spacious, and well-equipped. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the view from our window was breathtaking. Every aspect of the hotel felt thoughtfully curated to enhance guest comfort. What truly elevated our stay, however, was the food. Every meal we had was a culinary delight. The breakfast offered a wide selection, and dinner was equally impressive beautifully plated, flavorful, and crafted with fresh, local ingredients. Whether it was the rich aroma of the coffee or the perfectly grilled seafood, every bite felt like it had a story. Service throughout the hotel and restaurant was outstanding—professional, friendly, and genuinely hospitable. The staff remembered our preferences and went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and satisfied. We left feeling relaxed, pampered, and already planning our return. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a perfect blend of comfort, service, and unforgettable dining. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Absolutely loved this place! The food was so nice, got the lamb tagine which is the traditional Moroccan flavour quickly becoming my favourite dish. Atmosphere was fantastic -great live music and nice rooftop setting. Malak was our server and she was lovely, and also loads of the staff interacted and were chatty and friendly. We were a bit confused at first whether there was a table as reception weren’t that clear, but so glad we went up as we had the best evening. Would highly recommend this place

The Head of Guest Relations is a young woman named Mina During my stay I had some health issues. Mina personally took me to a medical facility where I was treated in a most professional manner. Mina would not leave me alone for a minute and helped take care of every last detail. She is clearly someone who loves her job and is excellent at what she does. She is a credit to the hotel and is also a wonderful representative of her country. I cannot praise her enough! In addition, she runs a fabulous boutique hotel, with a quirky interior design, terrific rooftop terrace with a remarkable seafood restaurant. I highly recommend a stay at this hotel.

Our stay at Salut Maroc in Essaouira was absolutely wonderful! The hotel itself has such a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, full of color, art, and charm, truly a reflection of Essaouira’s vibrant spirit. What made our experience truly special, however, was Mina, the amazing lady at the reception. From the moment we arrived, she was incredibly kind, warm, and helpful. She organized a fantastic local tour guide for us, gave us great tips for exploring the Medina, and made sure every detail of our stay was perfect. Mina’s personal touch and genuine hospitality made all the difference in the world for us, we felt completely at home. The entire staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and eager to help. Staying right in the heart of the Medina was unforgettable - the location couldn’t be better for discovering the magic of Essaouira.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Best Experience We’ve Ever Had — Anywhere Chef Imad and Mina… where do I even begin? From the moment we arrived, they treated us like family. Not guests, family. The level of hospitality we received was on a completely different level: warm, intuitive, effortless, and deeply genuine. Every dish Chef Imad prepared was a masterpiece. Not just delicious, but thoughtful. I’m talking about the kind of food that tells a story. Flavor combinations we’ve never experienced before, ingredients sourced with intention, and presentations that felt like art. We could literally taste the passion in every bite. He would check on us periodically and make sure we had the best experience, which we did, thanks to him. I can say all the above about his hospitality as well. Truly the best of the best. Chef imad is true Top tier excellence And Mina — she is the heart of this place. She has a sixth sense for hospitality. Before we could even ask, she anticipated our needs. Her kindness, her grace, her ability to make every moment feel special… she’s the definition of world-class service. The rooftop views, the music, the atmosphere — all incredible. But what made this stay unforgettable were the people. We travel constantly. We’ve stayed in luxury hotels around the world. But nothing compares to the soul and sincerity of Salut Maroc — and that is entirely because of Imad and Mina. To anyone reading this: book it. Don’t hesitate. To Imad and Mina: thank you for giving us a memory we’ll carry forever. We walked in as guests. We left feeling like family. ❤️
Omar D — Google review
The sunset view is absolutely stunning and the live band added a great vibe. The décor is unique and the staff were friendly, but the service was very slow and the food disappointing. My crab starter was full of shell, the calamari / prawns and the burger were just okay. Beautiful setting, but the experience didn’t match the view.
Gabrielle W — Google review
Stunning design, location and rooftop but less comfort, quality & value for money than others here Liked · The location is amazing right in the heart of the medina and next to the ramparts adjacent to the ocean. The roof top terrace was stunning, the service was always very good and friendly and the breakfast was very delicious. The hammam at the hotel was a nice, authentic experience and recommended. The riad style building and room design is beautiful and very Instagramable! Our host/guest relations Mina was wonderful. Super friendly and kind, super attentive, helpful and efficient and helped us with everything we needed - there was nothing that was too much trouble! Disliked · We had the family room which was stunning but it isn't 49m2 as described on Booking.com but more like 30m2. It wasn't the most comfortable or convenient/practical family room we had in Essaouira but appreciate that style probably trumps comfort is this type of design-led conversion! We had a disappointing meal in the rooftop restaurant sending all the hot dishes back as it was cold and undercooked (as did the table sitting next to us) to be re-heated/cooked so that rather spoiled the otherwise nice evening of dramatic sunset and great live music! It was very busy and felt like the kitchen was perhaps overwhelmed or struggling to cope to produce everything to standard. Felt that quality was sacrificed for view / style!
Jon W — Google review
I truly would not recommend this place, especially for Moroccans. From the moment I walked in with a friend, the experience was insulting. I hadn’t even made it to the restaurant area or had the chance to ask for anything, and the staff immediately said: “we don’t have hot drinks.” It didn’t feel like information it felt like they were saying: “we don’t want you here.” When we tried to sit down, we were told we couldn’t have a table with a view unless we ordered food. I agreed, but then watched tourists being seated in the best spots with only drinks and no questions asked. That double standard was impossible to ignore. The food and drinks were shockingly bad for the prices they charge tasteless, low quality, and honestly a waste of money. Even dessert, which should be simple, was disappointing. The view was the only nice thing, but how can you enjoy it when the whole experience is overshadowed by rude, dismissive, and discriminatory service? I left feeling frustrated, disrespected, and like my time and money had been thrown away. Essaouira has so many other spots with beautiful views, a welcoming atmosphere, and food that actually matches the prices. Salut Maroc is the opposite overpriced, unwelcoming, and not worth it.

Nestled in a charming alleyway, Le Real Mogador - Centre d'art/ Résidence d'artistes is a cultural gem located in the historic former Italian consulate. This vibrant space showcases an eclectic mix of artworks from local talents like Said Ouarzaz and El Hadar, alongside international creators. Visitors can marvel at captivating pieces that blend various styles, including abstract and impressionism, with mediums ranging from oil to acrylics.
The Real Mogador gallery is an impressive and charming space, spread across three floors, each displaying a well-curated selection of art from both renowned and emerging artists. The pieces are thoughtfully arranged, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the diversity and creativity on display. The curator, owner, and also the artist behind many of the pieces, was incredibly kind, taking the time to personally show me around all three floors, including his own home, which is an extraordinary piece of art in itself. The entire gallery exudes character and charm, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in art. Located within the medina, The Real Mogador is a hidden gem well worth exploring. The entry fee is very affordable at just 50 dirhams, and for an additional 50 dirhams, you can access the third floor, which is absolutely worth it! I highly recommend taking the time to enjoy this beautiful and unique space.

I went to Real Mogador without knowing what I’d find, and I was really pleased with what I discovered. The first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful architecture of this old riad and its colors. You can clearly see the love and dedication the owner put into its restoration and decoration. The art gallery features a vast repertoire of paintings by local artists, and if someone as profane in art as I am was able to appreciate it, that says a lot. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who comes in Essaouira!

A delightful visit - beautiful setting for a gallery in a Riad and lots of pieces from local artists to view. The owner was very helpful and welcoming. Free entry and 50DH if you wanted to take photos, which was reasonable to support the work of the gallery. Worth a visit!

The Real Mogador is an exceptional gallery. The exhibit space that was designed by the gallery owner is elegant, airy and spacious. While there we saw excellent work by a group of young local artists. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. Not to be missed while in Essaouira.

"I had the opportunity to visit many art galleries in Morocco, from the Rabat Museum to those in the alleyways of Marrakech. However, in this particular gallery, it was the first time I felt intimidated by some paintings, especially 'The Demons of Said' and the pointillism exhibition. In my opinion, it is the best art gallery I have ever visited. I highly recommend it and challenge you to understand the meanings of the artworks without looking at the titles. You won't be disappointed."

A place for artists to be exposed and understood. François has an amazing eye for discovering new artists and is loyal to his old ones too... A lovely welcoming vibe to the riad which has remained authentic. A great place to visit and to enjoy. I will be back every time.😄❤️

A well of calm and art in the bustle of Essaouira. There are a number of gallery spaces and different artists occupying them. The curator is knowledge and happy to share his knowledge of the artists and their techniques. He has also made the gallery (also his home) into a work of art in its own right. There is a nominal charge for photography (paid) though entry is free.

Beautiful gallery with tons of interesting artworks. Nice patio too. We ended up buying a painting by Essaouiran artist Erraad. Very friendly and professional service from Zak. The gallery has amazing pieces to admire and learn more about Morocco and Africa in general.

A wonderful commercial gallery exhibiting local artists and some who fell in love with the country and were inspired by it. It’s free to visit and is located in a beautiful piece of architecture, with a patio and also a terrace with the city’s view. The artworks are truly worth to be seen. Amazing and quiet place in the middle of Essaouira showing art from local artists. Bayt Dakira, also known as the House of Memory, is a museum located in Essaouira's Jewish quarter or Mellah. It serves as a cultural space dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Moroccan Jewish community. The building houses ancient artifacts, texts, and rare photographs and aims to symbolize religious harmony and coexistence. Visitors can explore a temple, library, art exhibitions, and cultural residence for researchers while viewing Jewish cultural objects such as traditional clothing and audiovisual recordings.
A very quiet place to spend your last day. The interior design is rich and the collections were great pieces of the Jewish community. It would be more helpful if there are English translations as well. I hope there will be more support to these projects of reviving the jewish culture in Morocco. Also, entrance fee is free!

Very well kept museum about the history of the Jewish community in the area. A beautiful building filled with lots of photos, information and some videos. On the second floor there's also a library and wifi is available. The door is closed so you have to wait for the security guard to let you in/out. The informational signs don't include English translations but I just used the photo feature of Google translator.

Bayt Dakira or the House of Memory is a Jewish museum from the 18th century located in the Jewish quarter "Mellah" of Essaouira's old medina in Morocco. The museum seeks also to show the coexistence between Muslims and Jews in the city. Visitors are greeted by the expression "Shalom Aleykoum, Salam Lekoulam" which is a mix of Arabic and Hebrew to illustrate the friendship between Jews and Muslims.[

Bus tour agency
Supratours offers luxury coach services between Marrakesh and Essaouira, with comfortable reclining seats, air conditioning, and a 20-minute stop halfway for bathroom breaks and snacks. In Essaouira, the bus stop is conveniently located near the Medina and the beach. The facilities in Essaouira may be smaller compared to other locations, but the buses are known for their comfort and ample leg space.
Bought my ticket online but you still have to pay for your bags beforehand (on the way from Marrakech I paid 5dh, here I didn't get change for my 10dh so not sure how much it actually is 🤷🏼‍♀️). It's possible to store your bag in the office for a bit until the bus arrives but it's not super well guarded so I wouldn't leave any valuables there. Wifi on the bus didn't work. AC worked fine but wasn't turned on after the stop halfway.
Olivia S — Google review
Please allow not to review the Essaouira Supratours office itself (though my experience was pleasant enough). No, I want to draw your attention to this inconspicuous street vendor right outside the the office (which does not have a cafe or snack machine). The best (and by far cheapest!) coffee in Essouaria I got from this gentleman who sits there all day long and serves all bus departures. I admit I am certainly a coffee nerd and was a bit worried how on earth I would survive the bus ride to Marrakech without a good cup of the dark brew. (The bus makes a comfort stop at a bar/restaurant after about an hour and I had another cup there, however that coffee was best forgotten instantly.) But this expresso-like coffee, hot and dark and strong, was utterly delightful and bigger than a double espresso. So if you like espressos: here sits your barista and waits for you. Highly recommended. شكرا جزيلا لك، وبارك الله فيك وفي عائلتك. So thank you very much, and may God bless you and your family.

Supratour is a great option to travel between Marrakech and Essaouira but if possible buy your ticket a day or two ahead of your travel day because some bus time slot book up early
Deeqa K — Google review
Good if it works, terrible when something doesn’t. Unfortunately the customer service is not helpful at all. The booking website malfunctioned - so I paid but never received a ticket. After contacting customer service, I received a follow up question for more details (which already were included in the original request). Then I contacted them again, and again, and again - but never got a response fixing the problem. In the end, I had to pay for a ticket at the bus station because I never received a ticket - only a payment confirmation. To offer customer service and then not respond for 4 days, ignoring 4 separate requests is very bad service.
Katharina A — Google review
Can buy any Supratours bus or train ticket here. There was no waiting (at 3pm). I did need to use my phone to find the train I wanted tickets for. The young man behind the counter was having trouble finding it. It took a while, but I ended up with the correct ticket. Heads up: they only accept cash.

Traditional & tasty breakfast, reasonable prices, very busy during the weekend and the place is quite small, so you’ll have to wait in line for a bit, you’ll also need to wait for your order to get prepared.. it’s worth the wait though 👍 It’s a modest place, nothing fancy, quite the opposite, but it’s a must-try during your stay in Essaouira

Lovely authentic family owned cafe. The owner is really polite and speaks fluent English (plus a handful of other languages too!). They do breakfast options all served with fresh Morocco bread. And in the afternoon/evening they have dinner options such as Tajine, freshly cooked. Mint tea too of course! Always a pleasant atmosphere and the most popular with the local people by far. Ate here twice a day for a whole week :)

We went here almost every day on our trip to Essaouira. The staff is friendly and service is quick compared to other restaurants in the area. Very good food for very low prices The tea is a must-try! The place is always packed with locals, which is a testament to the quality of the restaurant! Our favorites on the menu are Bissara soup, omelette with tomatoes and batbout with honey. We didn't try the tajine because there are no vegetarian options, but we must say they looked delicious.

We were looking forward to come to this place, and it was difficult to find a parking space. Once we arrived ,all tables were full and many people were standing outside. I went inside and spoke to the waiter. He was rude and he said if you find an empty space you can sit down and walked away. The kitchen looked so dirty, I thought it was the bathrooms. We went next door to the Murex and had the moroccan breakfast and omlettes. And it was sooo good.

The beach felt overcrowded in every direction. It’s still interesting and you can surely find space but the overwhelming amount of horses and dromedary with their masters all around felt a bit too much. They are very competitive between each other to get clients and there was even quite an unpleasant and vivid fight between the “chameliers” while a young family was in their care, on the animals. April being the windy season, there were a lot of kite surfers and it added to the colorful look of the beach.
Magdalena R — Google review
Pretty nice beach. Sandy and fairly shallow entry. Relatively clean. If one is into camel or horse ride, these are available (personally, I felt that the animals there are often abused and can’t support these activities). Close to a few restaurants and the Medina. Overall, worth a visit.

Amazing beach especially during the sunset time, you can ride, quads, camels and horses also learn to surf as there are many people who provide these services. Get healthy juice on the way and there are good restaurants nearby. The only inconvenience there are the dogs, some of them aren’t friendly and the province should do something about it.

Windy & nice beach. Very very busy in Aug. You can get cheap beds and use them all day long just be aware there are some charges for toilets. The showers on the beach were great however it seems only certain tourists were being charged to use - one to be aware of. Waves big, lots of fun.

Very wide beach with great views of crashing sea waves along the rocky beach. There are also sandy stretches for beach goers to enjoy a pleasant picnic or stroll along the beach. The castle is especially noted for the scene in Game of Thrones, so it is a popular tourist photo spot. Plenty of seagulls winging their way through the breezy wind. Locals and tourists can enjoy the seafood at stalls near the beach.

Large, beautiful beach with few people on it. You have to walk inside the sea a lot to swim as the slop is very gentle. Be careful of the tide. It can come fast and wet your belongings if you're not careful.

La Table by Madada is a romantic and upscale dining spot in Essaouira, located in a former 18th-century carob warehouse. The ambiance is intimate with candlelit tables adorned with white linen. Chef Souad offers a modern twist on local cuisine, featuring locally caught seafood. The restaurant also serves briny oysters from Oualidia and Champagne in a sleek renovation of the warehouse.
Excellent food and ambiance. Fresh seafood with the chef’s touch. Just the right flavorings to the sauce in the clam pasta. Not overwhelming with tomatoes. Seafood soup infused with fresh local spices. Wonderful ambiance and packed with diners. You need a reservation to get a table.

The best restaurant in Essaouira! The atmosphere is reminiscent of a posh French restaurant. The service is impeccable, and there's a great wine list to accompany the refined menu. We had a seasonal salad to start, fresh and full of flavour, followed by a top-quality John Dory fillet and a delicious millefeuille of vegetables. Don’t miss this restaurant when in town. Greetings to the charming restaurant manager from a Croatian couple!
Rafael K — Google review
Elegant and beautiful restaurant with great staff. Food is good without being memorable. Spider crab was the best item we ordered. The manager is very welcoming and friendly. The restaurant has issues with their credit card machine so we had to walk to the hotel next door for payment.
Yuri N — Google review
Lovely, opulently designed dining room, food was of a good quality .. Definitely recommended . It's quite a large restaurant ( though well designed so it didn't feel like it ) but seemed a bit understaffed so service was a bit slow .. they were more focused on several larger groups The credit card machine seems a perennial problem reading the reviews... It clearly doesn't work and didn't for us after a perfunctory effort to try it .. Given the price and quality otherwise they really should fix that. Also maybe the guy playing the same few guitar chords over and over again all night maybe could extend his repertoire a bit .. Overall it's a good place though, they're just minor articles .., You won't be disappointed (especially if you don't expect the credit card machine to work!)

Great food, lovely atmosphere and attentive friendly service. Good local wine by the glass, all reasonably priced.

Everything about this place was great. We walked in and the vibes were excellent. There was a man playing acoustic guitar & a dancer who performed intermittently throughout the meal. The decor was lovely, fine dining chic. The food was great, steak was cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The bill came to just over 1100dh between 3, which is on the pricier side for restaurants in Essaouira but more than worth it for La Table.
Ruth R — Google review
Excellent friendly service with great food in a really amazingly decorated venue! Different staff members dropped our table to chat and offered suggestions for things to do during our stay. Musicians played really good background music at a reasonable level to allow for normal conversations. Phenomenal value for a delicious meal with drinks. Very pleasant dining experience.

This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Essaouira both for the food, the wine, the service and the atmosphere, which is elegant-Moroccan and not touristy-Moroccan. Definitely try the spider crab gratén and consider having the oysters too, which are very fresh. Friendly staff, including the French owner who welcomed us the two times we went there. Stunning. If you are in Essaouira, you need to plan dinner here! Our group went back a second night, not only was the food great but the view is spectacular and the service was amazing. There are plenty of non seafood, as well as vegetarian options too Highly recommend it!

What a pretty place, it has like 3 floors with different vibes, live music, great menu, also can order a vine or a beer. I was in the night time, but if you go there on sunset or in the day the view would be amazing, cause it’s right by the ocean.

Really enjoyed my experience here. They in the perfect location to enjoy the sunset (above the Ramparts and with a view of the rocks). But I owe everything to Wafaa for making my evening a success. She went above & beyond to correct a reservation mistake I caused. It was Saturday in October so the restaurant was full but she made it work. Also I highly recommend Geannot my server. He was patient, offered great advice re the menu, and was a pleasure to deal with. I had the sole with a side of fries and the food was very good. THANK YOU Wafaa!

I visited this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation, and I'm glad I did. Upon arrival, i was greeted with a complimentary olive and traditional bread service, which was a nice touch. The shrimp was fresh and delicious, and I also ordered a local beer, which complemented the meal perfectly. The view overlooking the ocean at sunset was absolutely breathtaking. The staff was attentive and professional, although the prices were a bit high. Nonetheless, the experience was truly unforgettable!

The sunset was spectacular. The local wine from the Essaouira area (Val d’Argan) was great, and at 540 dirham, it was a good value. The service was super friendly and attentive. They even brought white table cloths upon my request since the tables on the first-floor terrace weren't as nicely set as those on the second floor. The oysters were fresh and delicious. However, the main course, garlic shrimp and sea bream, was rather dry and disappointing for the price. Reservations are recommended!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Mandala and I can honestly say it’s one of the best healthy restaurants I’ve visited in a long time. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt fresh, clean, and welcoming — a perfect reflection of the food they serve. The menu is packed with nutrient-rich, thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and there’s a great balance between flavor and health. I ordered tofu salad- it was absolutely delicious and left me feeling satisfied, not stuffed. My partner had the fish burger, which was hearty and packed with flavour without being overwhelming. What really stood out was the attention to detail: fresh herbs, vibrant produce, and generous portions without excess. Even the drinks were impressive — the green juice and turmeric ginger shot gave a nice energy boost without being too sweet. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive.

Haim Pinto Synagogue is a small but notable synagogue located in the former Jewish quarter of Essaouira. It features a blue-tiled prayer room and offers free entry to tourists. The synagogue is part of the rich Jewish heritage in the city, with only three synagogues surviving from ancient times. The upper floor served as both a synagogue and the home of Rabbi Chaim Pinto, while the lower floors housed his office.
Beautiful and tiny. The downstairs is where the rabbi lived. The upstairs was the synagogue. They still use the temple if someone requests and they will get a minyan if needed. The lady who is there was great and super nice. If you come to Essaouria it’s a must see, but it’s a quick in and out type of place - 10 min.

Essaouira's City Walls, built in the late 18th century to protect the medina from invasion, have become a symbol of the city's rich history and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walls also feature the Portuguese Fortress and Scala de la Kasbah, both remnants of Essaouira's past as a major seaport. While the city boasts a pristine beach, its strong Atlantic winds make it more suitable for wind surfing than swimming.
Amazing view with the ocean and the sunset! However, you have to find a spot and climb the walls while the place gets crowded. Try getting there earlier than sunset. Note: they don't let people stay on the walls after sunset.

The Remparts and City Walls of Essaouira, also known as Mogador, are among the most iconic features of this Atlantic port city. Built in the 18th century under Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, the fortifications were designed by European military engineers to protect the harbor and town from naval attacks. Their design reflects a unique blend of Moroccan tradition and European military architecture. Stretching along the seafront, the walls are punctuated by bastions and lookout towers, offering sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Cannons, still lined along parts of the ramparts, recall the city’s strategic importance as a trading hub and maritime stronghold. The ramparts also provide some of the best vantage points in Essaouira. From here, one can admire the crashing waves, the whitewashed medina, and the fishing boats returning to port. The combination of sea breeze, ocean spray, and historic stonework creates a truly atmospheric experience that draws both history lovers and photographers. Visitors often describe the Remparts as both impressive and tranquil, embodying the spirit of Essaouira itself: a city of defense and openness, of strength and beauty. Exploring the walls is not only a journey into history but also a chance to connect with the timeless rhythm of sea and stone.

This was my first ever hammam so I can't compare with anywhere else but I felt very satisfied. I paid 230 dhm for one hour, with the black soap and scrub. I think I lost half a kilo in dead skin cells!! It was very relaxing, a bit rough but that's how it works, and a lovely mint tea relaxing in my robe afterwards. The place is spotlessly clean. I would repeat again if staying longer. You don't need to take anything - flip-flops, disposable underwear etc is all provided.

I originally planned to find a public hammam to experience a traditional bath. I'm so happy I decided to book here instead. The experience is wonderful. Beautiful atmosphere and lovely staff. For those who have never experienced this, I highly recommend. They provide a robe, paper underwear, slippers and a locker for your belongings. After changing, you are served tea while waiting for your turn. First lovely room was a steam room where you are drenched with water and applied black Moroccan soap and lay for approximately 15 minutes to soak in the heat and moisture. Next room has a beautiful black pedestal table you lay on while you are scrubbed from head to toe. The amount of dead skin removed is incredible. Best experience. It is divided into several sections including a fish market, spice square, flea market (La Joutia), auction house, and jewellers' market offering exquisite gold and silver jewelry. Additionally, visitors can find Moroccan crafts such as carpets and leather goods, making it a diverse and bustling marketplace.
This has got to be the best souk in Morocco! I’ve been to many, but Essaouira’s felt so special. I spent about five hours there and still didn’t want to leave. Each shop has its own unique vibe, and the shopkeepers were incredibly kind and helpful. Every time I asked where to find something, they wouldn’t just point me in the direction—they’d actually walk me there and leave without the other shopkeepers noticing. It was such a genuine experience. You’ll find everything from handmade Moroccan teapots and beautiful tea glasses to breathtaking paintings and handmade rugs, linen clothing, genuine leather goods, and the most fragrant spices. If you’re looking for authentic treasures, this is the place!

This is an absolutely fantastic place a bit of a labyrinth but so enjoyable with winding streets and multiple marketplaces and plenty of cafes and eating spots. Great atmosphere and one of the streets will take you down to the beach. We spent hours just wandering around and it’s up there with any marketplace in Morocco.

Caravane Café is a vibrant and flamboyant restaurant in Essaouira, founded by French artist Didier Spindler to showcase his abstract art. The restaurant is a maze of rooms surrounding a tropical courtyard where guests can savor dishes like roast lamb and local goat cheese with Argan honey. At night, the atmosphere becomes even more lively with complimentary potent rum punch and entertainment such as magic tricks, fire-breathing, and acrobatics.
Staff made a table available for us without a booking, super attentive and engaging. Table magic was great fun and the live music was brilliant, made for a great atmosphere. The tapas dishes are good, but note it is all very sweet with honey used in most dishes.
Elliott — Google review
Caravane Café has been recommended to us and we decided to give it a go. After no one replied to our email for a booking we needed to go in person and make one. Service was OK, nothing extraordinary. There was no toilet paper or soap in the bathroom, which we thought was pretty strange for such an expensive place. The food was nicely cooked and delicious, a little bit on the gourmet side and overpriced – no doubt. The atmosphere was really nice and arty. There was entertainment, we had a magician, previously there were people playing with fire, which seems to be changing on a regular base, but you have to pay for it, which no one has mentioned to us. So, all in all mixed feelings and not very impressed!

Caravan Café is truly one of the highlights of my time in Essaouira. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by a warm, inviting atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The deco is charming and full of character, perfectly blending Moroccan style with a cozy, artistic touch. The food is authentic and delicious, a true taste of Moroccan cuisine. Every dish we tried was very tasty and beautifully presented. The drinks menu is also impressive, with a great selection to suit every taste. What makes Caravan Café so special, though, is the entertainment. The evening show was outstanding, we enjoyed soulful Gnawa music, were amazed by a magician’s tricks, and even laughed at a delightful Charlie Chaplin performance. The live band kept the energy high all night, and the staff made sure everyone was having a great time. There are very few places that offer such a perfect combination of food, drinks, music, and unique performances in Essaouira. It’s the kind of spot where you can relax, enjoy yourself, and make unforgettable memories. I’ve added it to my list of must-visit places in Essaouira and will definitely return. A big thank you to the entire team for the warm hospitality and the wonderful experience!

This was by far one of the best dinners I had during my trip to Morocco. The food is good and the decor is wonderfully quirky. High-end and elevated pan-Mediterranean / Moroccan cuisine. Professional service, cleverly-designed interior, a wine list. Tucked down an alley in old town Essaouira, this restaurant makes for a perfect date spot or intimate gathering of a small group of friends. Excellent when seeking an alternative to tajine, but still desiring something local. Saffron cream sauce, an absolute must-try.

We were in Essaouira for two full weeks and ate in about 10 different restaurants, and this was the best. Beautiful interior decor, professional service, polite, they know their menu inside out. They have a wine list. I am mentioning this because less than 5 % of the restaurant has alcohol in this city, probably in this country. We had a memorable appetizer, seafood, and all this at a reasonable price. Great experience.

We were recommended this restaurant by our lovely hosts at Dar Adul and it absolutely did not disappoint! The food is exceptional and 💯 the best meal we have had in Morocco. Tom B — Google review
My partner and I ate here tonight. We made a reservation, the restaurant was not busy. To start with, we were greeted by a friendly server who showed us a small corner table, which was blocked in by another table eating their food. We looked a little shocked - didn't mean to be rude but the table was very cramped and no way in or out without disturbing the other guests. He seemed to notice our concern and offered another table, which was very nice and out of the way. The server gave us a menu and explained some of the dishes, showed the unavailables, etc. We ordered our drinks, which were a little confused but no major issues. We ordered the Cauliflower and 'Sunny' to start. They looked beautiful when they arrived (see photos). I know this sounds silly but we were given the dishes and no cutlery and had to wait to find a server to give us some for a fair while (added to the negative experience. The food itself seemed a little bland despite the beautiful presentation and romantic setting. Both the starter and main seemed to be presented at a gourmet standard but lacked any depth of flavour. Some of the sauces used to could have easily been jarred or store bought. The only notable flavours in the cauliflower were tomato, salt and cream. Unfortunately for the price point of the food I was hoping for something more exciting. There was nothing 'wrong' with the food. It tasted OK and I didn't have any issue with portion sizes, just expected a little better. After we had eaten the starter we left the cutlery on the plates (we are English and this may have been our mistake) but when the waiter collected the plates, poorly wiped off the cutlery and placed the dirty cutlery on the table causing a mess on the table. It felt a little careless and could have been executed better if it was necessary for us to keep it for the mains. Unfortunately, I didn't finish the main as it was a little to 'same-y' all the way through. The decor is nice, small restaurant and good presentation - overall I didn't feel prices were justified by taste.

Restaurant Le Sirocco is a popular dining spot in Essaouira, known for its delightful blend of Moroccan and French cuisine. The menu offers a variety of dishes including tajine, couscous, steak, and pasta. The cozy ambiance and nightly live music create the perfect setting for a relaxing evening with loved ones. While prices may be slightly higher than other local restaurants, the experience and flavors make it well worth it.
One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in a long time anywhere (I’m from the UK). Exquisite! Such a welcoming atmosphere with wonderful live music that was lively and relaxing at the same time. The service was Excellent! Genuinely such great hosts. And the food - some of the best I’ve had in anywhere for some time. The lamb tagine was a standout - such tender meat with subtle flavour of the spices. My partner and I had two desserts (see photo) and both were excellent. I’d highly recommend - one of the few places clicking on five stars for food, service and atmosphere feels absolutely spot on and deserving!

Le Sirocco in Essaouira is a true culinary treasure. The atmosphere blends authentic Moroccan style with a cozy and elegant setting, making it the perfect place for a relaxing meal. The staff is attentive and welcoming, ensuring every detail of your visit is taken care of. The seafood is extraordinary—especially the grilled lobster, which is perfectly cooked, tender, and rich in flavor. Each dish, beautifully presented, showcases the freshness and quality of local ingredients. The sautéed vegetables add both color and taste, complementing the main course wonderfully. Le Sirocco offers more than just outstanding food: live music in the evenings creates a delightful and inviting ambiance. The menu has plenty of variety, including classic Moroccan specialties and creative dishes, so there is something for every palate. For anyone visiting Essaouira, Le Sirocco is truly a must-visit restaurant. The combination of exceptional cuisine, warm service, and charming atmosphere makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

An unforgettable culinary experience in the heart of Essaouira Le Sirocco was such a standout during our trip to Essaouira that we ended up going back more than once — and each time was just as incredible as the first. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere wraps around you with warmth, charm, and a touch of bohemian elegance. It’s cozy, intimate, and full of soul. The food is truly unforgettable. Every dish we tried — from the rich, perfectly spiced seafood tagine to the Tanjia and Mrozia — was bursting with flavor and presented with care. Even the fresh bread and starters were delicious and memorable. You can feel the love in every bite. And the desserts were truly the grand finale. Every bite felt indulgent and refined. The Rzeza dessert was unlike anything we’ve ever tasted — delicate, fragrant, and delightfully crunchy. And the chocolate fondant? The kind of dessert that makes you close your eyes and savor every spoonful. It was the perfect sweet ending to an already exceptional meal. The live music added a soulful and intimate touch without overwhelming the space — it simply elevated the entire experience. And the service? Impeccable. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Le Sirocco is the kind of place that stays with you long after the meal is over. Whether you’re visiting Essaouira for a few days or longer, don’t miss this spot. We made sure to return — and we’d do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Le Sirocco!

Unscrupulous billing. Forgettable food. Avoid this tourist trap! I've waited a few months before writing this review, hoping my experience was an anomaly. Having gone through other 1-3 star reviews from the last 3 months, a disturbing pattern emerges. One can conclude my experience wasn't a one off. Note the prices on the menu when placing the order. Then scrutinize your bill. Prices have a mysterious tendency to inflate between the menu and your bill! If you order a small size, check if you've been charged for a larger portion instead (especially water!) If you'll point out the discrepancy in price, the manager will pretend it's a system glitch. Really? How come other people have complained of the same issue over the last few months?! The food here is average yet pricier. The chocolate fondant was mediocrity decorated with rose petals. Menu said tagines came with rice. But had to ask for it. When I did, pretty sure, the waiter muttered a scornful remark in Arabic. My advice: if you can, skip this restaurant entirely. I stayed a month in the medina. Others in the vicinity like M'Riste Jouhar, Restaurant Berber, Amira, Dar Dasha offer WAAAYYYY better food and service. For such dishonest businesses, there should be an option of leaving a negative rating.

We had a fantastic evening at Le Sirocco. The food was rich in flavor and beautifully presented we started with bastilla and briouats, both perfectly crisp and tasty, then enjoyed a meat and prawn tajine that was absolutely delicious. Gusto Italia is a charming and refined Italian restaurant located just a few steps from Essaouira beach. It offers a welcome break from traditional Moroccan cuisine, serving up typical hearty Italian dishes made with high-quality ingredients, many of which are specially imported from Italy. The modern setting and excellent customer service make it an ideal spot for lunch during your Essaouira adventures. In addition to the delicious food, guests can enjoy live music, making it perfect for a romantic dinner as well.
They accommodated us without reservation on a busy Thursday evening. The food was superb; we had carpaccio and garlic tomato bruschetta to start, Parma ham and beef ravioli and carbonara for main, and a chocolate mouse to end. All were so so good. Great ambience. Highly recommend.

A very nice place with a calm atmosphere. The food we ordered was delicious, especially thanks to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the beef steak — it was tender and easy to cut. The dessert was also memorable: the tiramisu was light and not too sweet, and the almond ice cream had a truly authentic flavor. The staff was very respectful and well-organized, which made a big difference considering we visited during the Gnaoua Festival, when most places were overcrowded, overpriced, and serving low-quality food. This address is highly recommended.

If you want a small diversion from the Moroccan food then Gusto Italia is your best bet. While the back alley location may seem scary at first, once you get in the door you will be welcomed by a cozy atmosphere with beautiful pictures on the walls and discreet music. There were 7 people in our party. The service was excellent. The food simply amazing. We started with beef carpaccio and followed by fish, beef and ricotta ravioli, ossobucco, frutti di mare spaghetti and fish soup. Each great! And tiramisu and coffee for dessert. The total cost was around MAD2800, including 2 bottles of great wine.

Silvestro is a charming Italian restaurant in Essaouira that offers a warm and familial ambiance with the flavors of Italy. The decor may not be the main attraction, but the focus here is on the delicious cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. Giuseppe, the skilled chef, can be seen through a glass window as he works his magic at the pizza oven while other family members tend to simmering pots of linguine with seafood, osso bucco, and fresh catches of the day.
Our family of 4 enjoyed a beautiful dinner at Silvestro on May 09, 2024. We were seated on the second floor at a nice window seat. The ambience in the restaurant was very nice and the service was what is expected at an Italian restaurant. The pasta was really fresh and the desserts were amazing. We definitely recommend for a change from the traditional Tagine's. Make a reservation.

We chose this restaurant because of the nice reviews. The service personnel were very friendly and kind, the place is cute and comfortable. But on the meals I’ve had something to say. My pasta had something unusual for a Bolognese ragú. The garlic was the strongest taste of all, followed by a big amount of parsley and really overcooked rigatoni. The pasta with melanzane e ricotta was better but nothing special. 5stars for the olives as sides. 40€ with antipasti and drinks it’s a little bit too much for what we got.

We stumbled upon this place by chance and absolutely loved it! The vibe is cozy and comfortable, with super friendly service. The venue also serves as the headquarters for the Association Essaouira Mogador and is a hub for community events. A truly special place, not a typical museum, but a living space where the history of Mogador is kept alive. You can feel the spirit of coexistence between cultures and faiths that shaped this city. There are concerts and events that let you not only read about history, but experience it. L'Horloge d'Essaouira, also known as the Clock Tower of Essaouira, is a prominent landmark located just a short distance from Bab Sbaa. This square tower serves as a useful point of reference for navigating the Medina of Essaouira. While it's not accessible to the public for panoramic views of the city, its proximity to a charming square with trees and inviting cafes makes it an enjoyable spot to visit.
Easy to find and through the gateway is lovely little square with trees, great cafes and on to restaurant and more. It would be great to go up the tower for the view over the city but its not open to the public. I am sure if you ask around you would find someone who would take you up for a few dirhams but I ran out of time to find anyone. The canons our side the gate are the real deal too.

Nice clock tower next to one of the gates into the Medina We visited end of May 2024 and here is a small tourist tip. If you want to buy a scarf or blanket, the guy selling them inside the gate entrance and around the corner to the left stacked against the wall has the best - or one of the best - prices in Essouaira. It's also nice because the prices are advertised and he didn't try to hustle us at all. However don't try to haggle. He wouldn't offer any discount to another customer who tried to get a lower price. You can check yourself but we saw the same items for sale elsewhere for at least 50% higher price.

Two points: the good and the bad. Good first. The food tastes quite good. Nothing great but nothing bad either. Overall average. The atmosphere and the location is great—easy to find and located in a sunny square with street musicians passing by every now and then. But then the issues start. The service is really, and I mean really slow. At times it also seems to be clueless and even ignorant. Then the orders were messed up even though the pointing at the menu couldn’t be any clearer. And in the end, they tried to charge me for things that we ordered but never got. I’m sure some people will have a better experience but I would not recommend this to anyone. There are many better options within just 300 meters.

Cooking class
Cooking school
Latifa Cooking Classes is situated in the heart of Essaouira, known as a vegan paradise with three restaurants offering 100% vegan menus. The experience offers an authentic Moroccan cooking experience in a relaxed and easy-going home setting. Participants have the opportunity to select their desired dishes and then accompany Latifa to purchase fresh ingredients from local markets, providing an enlightening discovery of herbs, spices, and traditional cooking methods. The class also provides insights into Moroccan culture and cuisine while accommodating vegetarian preferences.
Absolutely awesome experience! We met Latifa at the location near one of the access to the Medina (parking close by is super easy) Since we were going to buy fresh ingredients at the market, based on what would be currently available she took the time to explaine and to suggest to us various options of dishes to choose from for the cooking session. Once being welcomed in her apartment with a lovely Moroccan tea, in the kitchen she started explaining the various steps we would be following for the preparation and following cooking of our dishes based on her knowledge and experience, her sister Rashida joined the kitchen to help us and they both took the effort to take us through the steps in proper way of Moroccan traditional cuisine. The preparation and following cooking was very detailed, interesting and fun, very involving on the whole process. The food was ultimately amazing (the best of our vacation for sure!) and the set was super cool and very relaxed making us feel welcomed at they're place and the company and overall vibe was just perfect. Totally recommend to anyone interested in learning and experiencing the way of the typical Moroccan food Thanks to both Latifa and Rashida Tommaso and Diamante

Cooking with Latifa was so lovely, I cannot recommend it enough. It started with choosing what we wanted to cook and going shopping with her. Then led to cook with her and her sister. Rachida and Latifa were very patient, as my partner and I are not experienced cooks. At the end we were able to share the delicious meal with Latifa. I hope the next time we visit Essaouira that we can cook with them again.
Gabriella Z — Google review
Had the absolute best time doing this cooking class in Essaouira. Latifa took us to the local markets in the morning to buy all ingredients for our chosen menu. She also recommended some shops in case we would like to purchase some products like spices to take home. Afterwards we went to her place to cook our three course menu. She shared a lot of handy cooking tips with us. Our meal turned out wonderfully and we really enjoyed our home cooked lunch and the chat with her at the dining table. Thank you Latifa!

Latifa’s cooking class has been our favourite experience in Essaouira. She not only welcomes you with a sweet smile but you can clearly see she is extremely competent and has been doing this for long time. We started the experience going to the markets with her which I absolutely loved and then you go home and start cooking with her and her sister. The house is super clean and you feel immediately at home. Our experience lasted really long and the price didn’t change at all. At the end we ate the food (which was absolutely delicious) and shared a lot of interesting stories about Moroccan culture and food around the world. We will definitely be in touch and good luck for everything Latifa, thank you so so much ❤️🙏
Federica M — Google review
Wow wow wow. A truly unforgettable experience. Thank you Latifa and Rashida for an incredible day, spending time with you, shopping for the produce, that we then cooked with was a true honour. Thank you for sharing your passion for Moroccan cooking and culture. The class was incredibly inclusive, you will first head down to the local market in the Medina to purchase all the produce you will use for your chosen dishes. You will then head back to Latifa’s beautiful childhood home to cook in a traditional kitchen. Latifa will then walk you step by step through each dish. There you will find yourself chopping, mixing and cooking your way to culinary heaven! If you’re reading this please do yourself a favour and book yourself in with Latifa. Truly the highlight of our trip to Essaouira. Thank you again Latifa and Rashida, we can’t thank you enough.
Annahakim — Google review
This was hands down of the best experiences I’ve had. The experience to see the food purchased from the market straight to your mouth was amazing and Latifa made it so memorable. Her and her sister were super hospitable and made the entire experience one to not forget. The food was very very delicious and the entire class was very informative. Taking home a lot of tips and tricks! Thanks a lot Latifa! Can not recommend enough!

I had an amazing experience today at Latifa's Cooking Class and I can fully recommend you her class! I already enjoyed the trip to the market and the many stores where we picked out the ingredients for our meal. Later on we were met by Latifa's sister Rachida who greeted us with tea. The cooking was great and very hands on! They both are incredibly knowledgeable and don't hold back their wisest cooking tips and insights from year of experience. The atmosphere was very nice and I felt very welcomed and comfortable eating with the other guests in their beautiful salon. Please reach out to her and book your class if you're in Essaouira 🥰 thank you for everything !

Chez Sam is a reasonably priced seafood restaurant with a friendly staff and a selection of wines to complement their variety of seafood dishes. The restaurant offers an upstairs dining area with views of the sea. It's advisable to make reservations, especially in the evening, as they have restricted lunchtime hours and reasonable evening hours if reserved. The location has changed due to harbor area development, so it's recommended to call for the new address.

Art gallery
Museums
Galerie d'Art Damgaard, located across from the clock tower, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts in Essaouira. Founded by Danish collector Frederic Damgaard, this gallery showcases the naive art of local artists and has played a significant role in bringing Essaouira's art to an international audience. The well-curated displays feature paintings and sculptures by talented artists from the area.
Number one art gallery for contemporary Moroccan art. This art gallery only shows international recognized artists from Essouari. The danish -now retired- owner supported artists from the start of their careers in the 80s. International prices but open for everybody, no entrance. Just take a look here to have a different vibe. Some of the artists are in collections of big museums and on art fairs in Dubai and beyond.
Stijn T — Google review
The person looking after the gallery on 28/02/25 had the most terrible manners and whomever runs the gallery should look to employ someone more professional as this man will loose you business. Rushed me out the door whilst I was viewing the art saying that he is going to ‘eat’ at 12.30h. This was within 2 minutes of entering. Wouldn’t provide prices or names of the artists. Shame. No catalogue, no description, no photos…

A beautiful place where you can swim, relax and dream. Sometimes you need to collect some plastic bottles. This is the only sad thing to see in this amazing place. People, locals or turists need to learn to keep tgeir rubbish with them.
Robin N — Google review
Did not make the low tide, as it would have been 5:30AM. It was pretty to watch the ocean along the shore. Climbed a few sand dunes to get here but the majority of the ruins are straight back from this spot. Still a lovely walk but INCREDIBLY WINDY.
Melody L — Google review
Kitesurfing spot. Nice view , shallow wather, not to big shore break but depends on the waves direction might be 4m high. You can park on the beach entrance. Nice dunes and some ruins around to see. A few sharp rocks and coral on the beach but not to many.
Mariusz L — Google review
If you walk from Essaoura - come at the low tide. Google the tide times and start on your walk one hour before the low tide. This is a beautiful place to make a wish, we call them The Wishing Rocks 👍🏼😃

Beautiful remains of a small building out from shore. Sometimes surrounded by water, you can climb it if you dare. Also walk inland to see more remains of (possibly) a similar structure covered in sand. A perfect adult playground.

Really cool abandoned Sultan Palace near the village. It takes literally 7 minutes from the entrance of the village to the palace. Wondering around the palace was one of the coolest things we did in the Diabat village. Taking a ride in an ATV or stroll with a horse ride is nice, too. Please don't forget to visit the Jimi Hendrix Cafe after the visit to relax and to dine or a cafe! Highly recommended visit 👍

Nice 30 minute walk from Essaouira beach. The place is fenced in partially, so if you want to leave and find a way out - take it. Walked past barb-aired fences for 15 minutes before climbing one to get out.
Björn W — Google review
Lovely 2 mile walk along the beach from Essaouira, needing to paddle across the river which is very shallow at this point. The old palace is in ruins with no information about it, but still interesting to see. We walked back across the road bridge and the road - not as pleasant but ok.
Susan B — Google review
Ruins in the sand. Nothing much to see there. If you're roaming nearby you should take a look but it's a little detour from the road from Essaouira to Agadir and not really worth it. Landscape looks pretty nice on the beach side behind the dunes though, maybe next time.
Jonathan S — Google review
This is supposed to be Jimmy Hendrix house. Camel ride worth it but seeing his house a waist on my opinion. But definitely do the camel ride or 4 wheelers or both
Frank L — Google review
I experienced it while on a quad. Enjoy that experience to go through the local terrain to reach the beach. It was fabulous. I’m a history lover so I enjoy seeing the ruins.
Shelli A — Google review
Went for a walk from Essaouira (you can go via the beach the whole way, the mouh of the river is dried up; or go via the road). Nice enough, but not much to see, after hanging around for 15 minutes I went back to town. Completely free. Not really worth the 2-hour round trip walking, would only recommend it if you're passing nearby anyway and visit it as a small detour.
Joseph M — Google review
You can walk around through the ruins which was once home to people and destroyed by vagabonds and sand and wind. A good opportunity to see something from the past at no cost. There is a grove of trees nearby I also enjoyed walking through. Climb over the sand dunes toward the ocean and you will see the Borj Al barad.

Borj El Barmil, located near landmarks like the Castelo Real of Mogador and the Essaouira Ramparts, is a historical site with over a dozen Portuguese cannons pointed towards the sea. It's also known as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Visitors can walk around the port to experience its bustling past and take in views of blue boats on the Atlantic coast. The area offers great views of the fish market below and provides insight into local fishing practices.
A historical place, with an amazing tower, you can walk on top, beautiful view of Atlantic Ocean. Getting ticket was easy , 60 Dirham per person. Definitely worth it to go and visit it.

Borj El Barmil: A Charming Historical Landmark Worth Visiting! I really enjoyed visiting Borj El Barmil. It's an impressive historical landmark featuring unique architecture and stunning views of the sea and the city of Essaouira. Wandering through the tower takes you on a journey through time, and you can feel the grandeur of the history it holds within its walls. The location is excellent, situated on the waterfront, making it a major attraction in the city. The views from the top are wonderful and worth capturing in photos. I highly recommend visiting Borj El Barmil to anyone visiting Essaouira, as it combines history and natural beauty in one place.
El H — Google review
The view looks good from outside. I didn't go inside the fort due to the entrance fee and didn't feel like it will be a better view inside
Chandra R — Google review
This is the second half of the tower at the port and is a circular cannon defence, and all part of the entry fee to the Squala / tower. Great views over the fish market below. Unlike a sanitised supermarket fish counter this is a working port brining fish for local consumption, these are the ones you see on sale and the rest go straight to the freezers and cold storage for shipping. This is great spot to watch the ebb and flow in the market as people buy fish, get them cleaned by the guys who do just that for a living, and then get them grilled round the corner. It also gives a great view over the islands too.

🇲🇦 🇲🇦 🇲🇦 (Borj Al-Barmil) in Essaouira: Borj Al-Barmil (The Barrel Tower) in Essaouira Borj Al-Barmil, also known as the Circular Bastion or the Northern Bastion, is a prominent historical landmark in the Moroccan city of Essaouira. It's an integral part of the ramparts of Scala du Port (or Skala du Marsa). * Construction and Purpose: Borj Al-Barmil was built during the 18th century as a crucial part of Essaouira's defensive fortifications. Its primary purpose was to protect the port from potential naval attacks, house soldiers and ammunition, and store water supplies. * Location and Design: The tower occupies the northwestern corner of the city, overlooking the sea, and is distinguished by its prominent circular shape extending into the water. It measures approximately 25 meters in diameter and stands 6.20 meters high, topped with a series of stone merlons. The tower comprises two levels: a lower floor that served as a water reservoir and an upper floor containing a hall. * Defensive Significance: The tower was equipped with large cannons, some dating back to the 18th century, for port defense. These cannons were designed to fire projectiles over long distances, highlighting the tower's importance as part of the coastal defense system. * Naming: The tower historically bore two names: the first, the "Northern Bastion" or "Northern Tower," as mentioned in documents from the late 18th century. The second name, "Borj Al-Barmil" (The Barrel Tower), appeared later, with the first reference to it by this name coming from the traveler Bashi Boule in 1861. * Damage and Restorations: The tower sustained damage during the French attack on Essaouira on August 15, 1844. Some accounts suggest that locals intentionally demolished part of it to prevent the French from using it. It has undergone a series of restorations over the years, including those in the 19th century by Sultan Moulay Abd al-Rahman. Its most recent restoration was carried out by the Port Development and Exploitation Office and the Inspectorate of Historical Monuments and Sites of Essaouira. * Classification: The Scala du Port, dominated by Borj Al-Barmil, was classified as a historical monument under a Moroccan Dahir (royal decree) dated August 30, 1924, underscoring its significant heritage and historical value. Today, Borj Al-Barmil is a significant tourist attraction in Essaouira, drawing visitors to admire its beautiful historic architecture and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. It has also gained international fame after some scenes from the series "Game of Thrones" were filmed there.

I had the privilege of praying Jumah at the Mohamed Ben Youssef Mosque in the heart of Essaouira’s medina, and it was a truly serene and spiritual experience. Tucked within the charming old city, the mosque carries both historical and religious significance. The architecture is beautifully traditional, with clean white walls and simple Moroccan design elements that reflect the peaceful soul of the city. The mosque is well-maintained, offering a calm and welcoming space for prayer and reflection. The imam delivered a khutbah that was not only eloquent but also grounded in wisdom and relevance to everyday life. What stands out most is the sense of community within the mosque. Despite being in a city visited by many tourists, the mosque retains its authentic local spirit. The worshippers are warm and respectful, and there's a genuine feeling of unity and peace. If you’re in Essaouira and looking to attend Jumah or simply want a quiet place to pray, Mohamed Ben Youssef Mosque is a beautiful and spiritually uplifting choice.
