Beach
Kamakahonu Beach, also known as Kid's Beach or King Kam Beach, is a family-friendly spot located between Kailua Pier and the Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark in Kailua-Kona. With soft sand and calm waters within the protected cove, it's an ideal choice for families with young children. The beach offers about 200 feet of waterfront and is popular throughout the week.
Such a great little beach area to swim and relax in. There is plenty of beach area along with a larger area to swim, snorkel and just spend the day. It does get quite crowded in the afternoon because it’s one of the calmest places to get in the ocean. Kona Boys is located on the beach and rents out umbrellas, beach chairs, snorkeling gear and other water related gear. Grab your towel and head over!!
Lisa — Google review
Great beach with 2 swim areas. The water is calm. Parking across the street. There’s a little stand that rents paddle boards and other stuff. Get here early to find parking and a good spot.
Carmen C — Google review
For a small beach, in an urban setting, it sure is beautiful! There's loads of white sand, palm trees, striking turquoise water, and dozens of species of tropical fish (some of them quite large.) Sure, it gets crowded, but it never loses its appeal. I think the iconic temple of Kamehameha the Great, looming just off-shore, is what gives this beach such cool vibes. Nothing screams, "Dude, you're in Hawaii," louder than giant tiki statues in front of grass-thatched hales! And, its free with restrooms and an outdoor shower close-by.
Michelle P — Google review
Right off the cruise ship pier, perfect spot for relaxing on the beach. Restaurant and beach rentals on-site. Calm waters with some snorkeling
Kim M — Google review
Nice little beach with sheltered mainly sandy bottom cove - can be a little crowded but giving it a 5 versus a 4 for location right next to the cruise ship pier and a variety of restaurants, bars and shops - a great place to slip in the water and read a book for an hour or two before you head back to the ship. You can rent chairs and an umbrella from a stand right on the beach.
Bernie K — Google review
By far the calmest beach! Getting to it is a little tricky, it’s part of a resort but open to the public. You can find free public parking about a 5 minute walk away so it’s not too bad. We loved snorkeling, playing the sand, and swimming in the waters. It is very family friendly. The snorkeling was great there, lots of beautiful bright yellow fish to see as well as some others! The waters are so clear.
Maddie P — Google review
Cute beach and a very convenient location if you’re staying at the hotel. Plenty of amenities around as well.
Robert H — Google review
This is a really beautiful busy bay area, with nice spots for shade under palm trees or to sit on the lava rocks. This is the area where people canoe and more water activities so it was cool seeing large groups of people training on how to get the canoes into the water safety.

Kahalu’u Beach Park, located in Keauhou just a few miles from downtown Kona, is a popular spot for both snorkeling and surfing. The beach offers calm waters and is well-protected from aggressive waves, making it ideal for beginners to practice water activities. Families with kids of all ages can enjoy the coarse salt and pepper sand while exploring the shallow, crystal-clear waters. Visitors can also learn about the local marine life and reef etiquette at Kahaluu Bay Education Center.
05/01/2025 (Thu) Kahaluʻu Beach Park is a fantastic spot for snorkeling and relaxing by the sea. The water near the shore is shallow and calm, making it perfect for beginners. There are vibrant coral reefs close to the shore, which attract a wide variety of tropical fish. I even had an unforgettable moment when I was snorkeling just a few meters from the beach, surrounded by people standing in the shallow water — and a sea turtle swam right beneath me! I was so surprised to see one that close to the shore and near so many people. I saw many colorful fish, and the whole experience was incredibly fun. The beach is well-equipped with rest areas, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. What made the visit even more special was the presence of the Reef Teachers — a group of friendly and knowledgeable volunteers who help educate visitors and protect the reef. Several of them were incredibly kind to me — one sprayed anti-fog solution on my snorkeling mask, others showed me how to keep the lenses clear, and even pointed out where I might see sea turtles. Their presence made the experience feel safe, welcoming, and enriching. There’s also plenty of shade to relax under, making it a very comfortable place to spend the day. The free parking lot is fairly large, but it’s best to arrive early to get a spot. This beach truly offers a beautiful mix of nature, marine life, and aloha spirit.
Yulily — Google review
Loved Loved Loved!!! There is an eco group there most of the day to give you information and provide reef-safe sunscreen, and defogger for your goggles. This is a great place for snorkeling. There is a lifeguard on duty and fresh water rinse is available.
Bethany P — Google review
The snorkeling is good here! Sea turtles and more… I also love the fact that there’s benches here to sit and chill in the shade. That’s so convenient, as well as bathrooms and showers to rinse off. Very convenient, and also an easy snorkeling place for beginners, although it’s just a little difficult to get in and out of the water unless you find a right path. Because the reef/stone is literally right there, at least if you go at high tide. I’m sure it’s easier at low tide.
Peter K — Google review
We visited in 2019 and it was our favorite vacation as a family. This was the first beach we visited. There were turtles swimming around and it was beautiful. Easy access from your car. Kid friendly. Somewhat safe, Watch your kids as you are walking around.
Felisha H — Google review
A well-lit parking area was followed by an exceptional snorkeling experience, where we were fortunate to encounter a vibrant array of colorful fish. The shallow depth of the water made it ideal for children to enjoy. While snorkeling, it is essential to remain vigilant and secure your belongings from potential walkers. The restroom facilities were satisfactory, and the road leading to the spot was conveniently accessible. Additionally, it offers a prime location for witnessing a breathtaking sunset.
Adhil S — Google review
Is one of the easiest and most accessible snorkeling beaches for beginners. The corals are mostly dead but the fish are still around; maybe not as many and varied as in years past. Parking was free but now there is a $12 charge for 4 hours. Outside parking or street parking is free. It can get crowded if you come in after 11 am. There is a beginner’s wave break for surfers. A snorkel and surf board rental shop is across the street.
D J — Google review
If you love free snorkeling or beginner snorkeling right here is you can learn. Rock underwater and and not much fish you can see. Better go to two step. If you love to see reef and colorful fish
Kristina T — Google review
Kahaluu Beach is one of the most accessible beaches from downtown Kona and is the best spot for snorkeling. You can see many fish and enjoy snorkeling relatively safely. However, because there are many sharp rocks, it’s important to wear aqua shoes and use proper safety gear. There is parking available on-site for convenience, restrooms are accessible, and there are plenty of picnic tables, making it a great place to enjoy a packed lunch and relax. It’s an excellent spot for families to visit.

Manini'owali Beach, also known as Kua Bay Beach, is a stunning white-sand beach located on the western coast of Kona. It offers calm and crystal-clear waters for snorkeling during the summer and excellent surfing conditions in the winter. The beach provides ample picnic space, but limited shade, so bringing a beach umbrella is advisable. Visitors can enjoy swimming, body surfing, boogie boarding, and snorkeling in the crystal blue waters.
This is hands down one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve been to. The water is crystal clear, I felt like I was swimming in a pool. There were so many fish and sea turtles! Parking can be a bit tough tho.
Thai D — Google review
This beach is absolutely stunning, offering a fantastic experience for families with children. The sand feels incredibly soft, like finely ground powder beneath your feet. It's also an ideal spot for various activities such as snorkeling, swimming, or simply lounging around. You can discover the beauty of marine life or just unwind and soak up the sun. Overall, it's a place where I want to keep coming back to! plus, there are showers and bathroom nearby! Parking- better to come early as it fills up quickly
J B — Google review
Great beach. Snorkeled and saw a turtle along right side by rocks. Many fish. White sand, clear water and good waves for body boarding. Arrive early or late, or you will not get a parking spot.
Keith H — Google review
This is a faily large and beautiful sandy beach. It's busy even on a Friday so I can't imagine what it would be like on the weekends but it wasn't hard to find a spot. Would have been amazing in the sun so that we could see the color of the water but it was great either way. The waves are rough (but do some cool curls), so be careful if you're not use to it and are going to stay in the water close to the sand where they break. Luckily there is a lifeguard here. A turtle quickly stopped by to say hello.
Steph C — Google review
Super beautiful white sands beach with extremely clear water. Make sure you arrive early because parking's limited. And bring a parasol to stay out of the sun.
Matthijs — Google review
My favorite beach for chilling and enjoying the beautiful view. Come early the waves are perfect
Suzan C — Google review
This beach is known for snorkeling and swimming. Parking is free and public restroom. There are showers ourside. There was a lifeguard on duty. We went just before a storm, and it was very windy. Nevertheless, there were people swimming. It is rocky to get to get to the sandy beach. I was glad that I wore water shoes. We spotted whales though far away.
Catherine H — Google review
I’ve been to many beaches all over the world including beaches in Maldives and Turks and Caicos… This beach is definitely top on my list!!! The water literally glows, the sand is very soft, the waves are just the perfect size, there’s plenty of parking, and surprisingly there are outdoor showers that provide hot water! Do not miss this beach when you’re visiting Big Island!!! 😍🏝️ P.S… the photos are unedited!!!

Magic Sands Beach Park, also known as White Sands or Laaloa Beach, is a small yet stunning beach located about 4 miles south of central Kailua-Kona. With its white sand, turquoise waters, and great sunsets, it offers an ideal setting for swimming and surfing under the watchful eye of lifeguards. The beach is renowned for its excellent bodysurfing and bodyboarding opportunities due to consistent waves that can propel visitors across the water into a sandy bay.
Beautiful beach with interesting tide pools. A lot of the magical sand has been washed away to expose the rocks beneath and the waves are very big! My son (10) and husband has lots of fun playing in the waves but I wouldn’t let a smaller child into the water unless they are a very confident swimmer. Nice tide pools for little to splash in though.
Catherine H — Google review
The only beach park in Kona that has a decent sandy beach. Most beaches consist of lava rock. Not very large and be crowded especially on weekends. The volleyball court takes up some of the space. There’s parking along the road, a small lot on the beach side and a larger lot across the street. Waves could get large at times for boogie boards and bodysurfing. Be careful of rocks near the shoreline.
Kai’ula — Google review
This beach is absolutely amazing and still a hidden gem that not many people know about. Parking is easy and located right across the street, though it can get busy. The atmosphere is calm, romantic, and perfect for watching the sunset. The waves are gentle and safe for swimming. It’s an ideal place to relax, take photos, and enjoy the view. I watched the sunset here and honestly think it’s one of the best spots on the Big Island. Highly recommended for a peaceful evening by the ocean.
Andrey B — Google review
Small beach limited parking but worth every minute spent here. Water was crystal clear, turtles swim next to you. Waves were awesome not to me lion the beautiful sunsets. If you have a chance this is one of the best beaches to visit
Leisa V — Google review
Not for the faint of heart and the (excellent) lifeguards are sure to make you aware of the ever present danger of the combination of strong waves and large stones near the break. The water is warm and clear past the break but it does get crowded by tourists searching for that boogie boarding experience. The waves I got to ride were excellent and fun but after about thirty minutes, and the consistent warning from the lifeguard megaphone, I decided to try out some spots further north. In and out safely but it’s easy to see the risks.
Sean D — Google review
Good wave activity here. Be cautious with your kids under 2 years old; I wouldn't recommend bringing them out. There’s a strong current, and your feet could be touching the ground, and the next thing you know, you’re struggling to keep your head above water—especially if you can't swim. The floor is uneven. So, it's not very safe if you're holding little ones. Trust me, if I hadn't been close by to my wife and son, they both would've drowned. Keep safe.
Mike K — Google review
Mainly for boogie boarding. There were people snorkeling but I’m not sure how great it is! The waves get pretty big so I didn’t feel comfortable letting my little kids go out without someone with them but my husband and oldest kid had fun! I wouldn’t recommend this beach if you have small kids because the waves will pull them into the water. There was a lifeguard there though which was comforting.
Maddie P — Google review
Beautiful place, ocean is strong but clear blue water. Has life guard and great pic opportunities. Also has natural shade which is a huge plus!

Kohanaiki Beach Park, also known as Pine Trees Beach, is a serene beachfront park and popular camping area located north of Pine Trees Surfing Beach in Kailua-Kona. The beach features cool trees along the shore and in the water, making it a favorite spot for photographers. It is well-loved by the local surfing community for its consistent waves and is ideal for beachside barbecues and sunset watching.
Really peaceful and not crowded. Great place to relax, and there are lots of little beaches nearby to check out. I saw some native birds too, which was cool. Only bad thing — the restroom is pretty awful. But overall, still a beautiful spot.
Dinesh G — Google review
With it's luxurious piles of fluffy, white sand, this beach is a beauty! What I liked best, was that on a Sunday, it had a couple thousand (literally) fewer people than nearby Pine Trees Beach. There was plenty of free parking and I almost had it to myself. Only 4 stars because swimming conditions are always poor here. But excellent for sun bathing and watching sunsets!
Michelle P — Google review
Beautiful peaceful beach. Not crowded, partially white sandy beach area to swim in the cove area but bumpy drive in.
Patricia T — Google review
This is a hidden gem of a beach! We saw it from the ocean while going out on a ride to watch a few whales. It seemed next to a nice resort, so we got curious to go explore the place. It is a very quiet place and a beautiful place to watch the sunset. We saw some of the locals come to this place with their folding chair to enjoy the sunset. It is also a good place to surf. The sand is a little on the rougher side and one of those nice powdery beaches, but you will have a nice time if you spend an hour here in the evenings.
Mukund N — Google review
Beautiful beach to explore! Sand areas as well as rock sections. Neat tide pools with tons of aquatic life. Especially convenient stop on the way to the airport!
Kevin V — Google review
Gorgeous volcanic beach! Watching the waves roll in and create massive geysers is soothing for the weary traveler after the long flight or calming before the lengthy trip home. I will not miss the opportunity to visit again next time I'm on the island. Also, well attended trash cans and portable facilities for those who have a need to use them. Highly recommend! 👍👍

Honl’s Beach, located within Kekaha Kai State Beach, is not ideal for swimming due to its rocky terrain. However, it's a popular spot for body boarding and surfing, with an annual competition taking place here. The beach offers a picturesque setting for watching the Hawaiian sunset from a hammock or picnic table. While the rough dirt road leading to the beach may pose challenges for regular cars, visitors can enjoy the stunning views and observe surfers and boogie boarders in action.
beautiful little beach with ample shade and sunny areas. it was peaceful with very few people around. there is a picnic table and a bench. the shore is quite rocky and the waves can get a little rough so swim with caution.
Ekta — Google review
Absolutely beautiful beach! There is also a bathroom and shower across the street. There is a seawall, so you can sit and have a perfect view. We saw many surfers and people in canoes.
Micaela F — Google review
When it comes to beaches, size isn't everything. There's a HUGE amount of tropical beauty packed into this tiny slip of shore. Deep, luxurious pockets of sand are surrounded by rocks, waves and swaying palms. Swimming conditions are poor but there is a sandy ocean entry for wading and you can splash around in the safety of pretty little tide pools. Bathroom facilities complete with an iconic outdoor shower are located across the street. Best of all, there is plenty of FREE parking, next to the bathroom. There were lots of parking spots available when I visited on a weekend afternoon. Unfortunately, sad looking vagrants are part of this paradise. Don't be alarmed, just say a prayer, they are harmless.
Michelle P — Google review
Visited Honl's beach in May 2023 and May 2024 with my Partner whilst our stay in Kona. It is a lovely beach quite small but it wasn't busy. Both times we were there the waves were quite big so I wouldn't say it would be suitable for kids of snorkeling, but maybe more into summer the waves die down a wee bit. There wasn't much facilities ie restrooms, eateries etc, but you not far away from the centre of Kona. There is shaded bit from the sun in a grassy area which has a few trees, would be good for a picnic. I would recommend visiting Honl's beach as we liked it, you may spot sea turtles and you may find seashells. There was also a plack in the shape of a surf board saying that is where the surf board came from years ago. Steve and Jacqui fae Fife.

We love Honl's beach. Definitely great for sunset views and small kiddos. Parking is on the side of the road, few spots. Enjoyed every minute

Watch the surfers and boogie boarders at this small beach park with limited parking space. Not the best place for sunrise, but it’s an absolutely stunning place to see sunset. Lots of lava rock and very strong surf so this is not a good place to swim.

Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, located near Kailua-Kona, is a beachside wildlife refuge with ancient ruins and cultural significance. The park offers hiking trails leading to four ahupuaa, sacred temples, and petroglyphs. Visitors can learn about the history of Hawaiian fish ponds and explore the royal grounds where chiefs and warriors once lived. The park also served as a puuhonua or place of refuge for taboo-breakers in ancient times.
Amazing place. The hike is no joke and if you have mobility challenges I wouldn’t recommend this place. But if you’re in good shape it’s a ton of fun and not touristy at all. We saw bunches of sea turtles and had a blast. The lava field hike is pretty long and challenging.
John C — Google review
Gorgeous location. Sensational view of the ocean and of Kona. Warm waters and sandy shoreline. Great area foe snorkeling or marveling at the aquatic life in the Lava-flow ponds. Mild waves in this gulf. While we were there, we saw 2 sea turtles, one of which popped up just a couple feet from us.
Walt I — Google review
First, hot so bring your hydration of choice. And bring some back up H2O just in case.. It’s a seriously understated National park in my opinion. Very sacred space please keep that in mind when looking at how undisturbed the vast terrain appears. Staying on the path you can spot some subtle natural pools coming up from an underground network of water. Nothing h you can drink. But interesting to hear from the teacher that the early days when locals were in need of fresh water, this was the place to drink. The fishing has was “huge” with one of the largest fish pond I hear.
Dave R — Google review
Beautiful beach and park with a great chance of seeing turtles and other wildlife. THIS IS A HIKE FIRST and a beach second. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes and clothes. Bring beach stuff with you to change into if you want to swim and get your feet wet.
Chris H — Google review
Historical, so nothing like the Volcanos or big park. We had the tripark pass so it was included but I won’t pay 30$ just because I’m not that into even it was beautiful to see. You can’t swim but there is a public beach next to it. The ranger let us keep the car in the parking when we went to the public beach. That was the sun was very hot, not too much shade places. Also not recommend with a stroller.
Elena F — Google review
What a hidden gem. I was just killing time before my flight home and on a whim stopped at the park. I cheated when I saw there was parking closer to the beach, so I moved my car to the marina and walked to the beach from there. The morning time is breakfast for sea turtles. I must have seen 15-20. This was a happy little accident to have this be my last stop before returning home.
Cristina B — Google review
A short walk is all it takes to find a bunch of cute turtles. It’s a perfect spot for swimming, tanning, and just enjoying the day.!

It's also perfect for beach lovers seeking spectacular sunsets and views of Niihau, known as The Forbidden Isle.
The sunset here is absolutely breathtaking. There are tables on the beach, perfect for a picnic. The road to get there is incredibly scenic, adding to the experience. However, one part of the road is very uneven and difficult to drive through, but from that point, it’s a short and easy walk. Definitely worth the trip!
Olha K — Google review
The drive through the volcano ground needs 4WD. I saw a dodge van get stuck but it could have done better with managing the hurdles. It is worth a drive if you can make it to the end at the beach. You can walk too, if you are into it.
Derryl M — Google review
Kehaka Beach State Park is a hidden gem—its surreal water colors shift from light green to light blue, and it’s truly a treat for the eyes. The waves are gentle enough for swimming, and there’s plenty of space to relax or explore. Bonus: lots of easy parking. A must-visit for beach lovers!
Vamsi C — Google review
Crowded, especially after 9 AM. Worth it though. There is NO SHADE. Bring an umbrella or cover, but the beach is stunning. Beautiful white sand, and turquoise, clear water. Great for snorkeling, and Boogie Boarding. Waves were big-ish, and knocked my 10 yo on her butt. Pay attention to your kids if they're smaller. Beautiful and had a great time in the water.
Michele K — Google review
Only 2 people around. Very secluded or was just good timing. I'd recommend using a 4X4 not a van or car unless you're a confident driver. Road getting here was very uneven and rough.
Mike K — Google review
The drive back was rocky and somewhat difficult, dep nding on your vehicle. There were a few beachy areas or you can be on the lava in the ocean. Saw plenty of crabs and small fish in pools on the lava.

Lil tricky getting in, but worth it! Great beach and excellent snorkeling, current can be strong so make sure your a great swimmer.

Honokohau Beach is a remote and beautiful spot with calm waters and a unique mix of black lava, white coral, and wave-tossed shells. While the water may be too cloudy for snorkeling, visitors can still catch glimpses of honu (green sea turtles) along the shore. The beach is also home to an ancient fishtrap and Hawaiian heiau at its southern end, as well as anchialine ponds inland that provide habitats for marine and plant life.
Such a gem. Hiked out from Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park which I highly recommend. There is plenty of lovely shade close to the beach. The protected cove is great to cool off and relax. Saw some turtles and and took in the beauty!
Kate K — Google review
Lovely beach to stroll on , National Park. Abundant honey ( green sea turtles), laying around in sun, and swimming in nearby waters. Muxh less crowded than nearby public beaches.
Barry S — Google review
Please respect nature and ALWAYS stay 20 feet from the sea turtles!! Bring a zoom lens and enjoy them from afar. They are beautiful creatures who live, eat and nest here, leave them be. They were here WAY before we were.
Matt C — Google review
Just a wee hike, but worth it. Bring some wet shoes. The rocks are killer. Maybe some 🤿 gear? I don't know how deep it gets.
Steven C — Google review
Aaron and I enjoy getting out in a Big Island Buggy and exploring our little big island. Today we wanted to get out and see some Honu ( sea turtles ) and go on a little hike. We drove down to the harbor and walked down the trail that's parallel to the boat marina. Once we arrived at the beach, we were pleasantly surprised to spot a few Honu right at the waters edge. We continued our walk past the Halau ( Canoe Hut ) and we must have spotted at least 10 Honu eating the sea moss off the lava rocks! We then continued down the beach to the Aimakapa Fish Pond. It was an absolutely beautiful day at Honokohau Beach. A MUST do if you would like to spot some Honu. Please be respectful and stay at least 20 feet away and use that zoom feature on your camera! We even spotted a Monk Seal in the harbor!

Snorkle review: 0 out of 10. No redeeming qualities to snorkel here. Very shallow and long walk in and out over slippery, sea urchin laden lava rocks. Then very shallow with minimal fish which are scared of your presence they always swam away as fast and as far as possible. Lots of cold fresh water mixes making vision blurry. More fingers on my hand than coral as I snorkled 1000+ feet up and down. Finished after 20 minutes.
Jean H — Google review
Excellent place to admire the green turtles. It would not be my preferred beach to swim, as there are a lot of rocks, but to walk along the shore and to watch the turtles it’s just perfect!
C T — Google review
This is the only beach you can swim on that we found in January. If you go see turtles 🐢 and keep walking (turn right at the turtles) you can get to this beach. Be careful as there are rocks in the water, but you can actually swim from the beach here.

Mahai'ula beach, located in Kekaha Kai State Park on the Big Island's Kona coast, is a hidden gem often overlooked by many visitors due to its rough road access. This picturesque tropical beach boasts a mix of salt and pepper sand, abundant palm trees, and stunning azure waters. While not ideal for swimming due to a nearby lava shelf, it offers ample space for relaxation and family-friendly activities like snorkeling.
I really loved this beach. Even though it's a bit hard to reach, if you have a good car, you can drive all the way to the end and then walk about 5-6 minutes. The beach is very clean, the sand is incredibly beautiful, and there are lots of turtles and reefs. There are also trees that provide great shade. This place is truly special
Mariana Z — Google review
Really nice beach, having a bumpy ride to get here (make sure you have the correct vehicle) but incredible to see the landscape. The beach is really nice, small walk from parking to beach, where you get to see some animals. I even got to see a monk seal! 10/10
Nicole F — Google review
Excellent beach. Take your 4wd vehicle over the 10 minute bumpy drive. Park and walk RIGHT along the trail. 5 minute walk to a great boogie boarding beach for kids. Don't walk straight from the parking lot as that beach is very rocky.
Maggie V — Google review
Pros:secluded, uncrowded, shade, seals (restricted area). Cons: high clearance rough road to get there, rocky floor along shore, no real snorkeling. Not worth the effort w so many other beaches.
Tracy W — Google review
The road reach to the beach is very tough, you must have 4X4. But it’s worthy, it’s not that famous one, due to the road, but we like it very much, beautiful quite beach, clean water, soft sand, you can stay there for whole day.
Kenny L — Google review
A great little beach with not too many people. The way to the beach is a little walk. The road is unpaved, a lot of holes and stones. Cars of all types were driving on the road, but they drive real slow. We finally made it there, and it was worth it.
Ildiko S — Google review
Wow!! Simply breathtaking. Beautiful views of the beach + relatively calm for swimming + even has some shady areas too. And not far to reach from parking lot by the trail.
Valeria F — Google review
WARNING: Rough road conditions. If you have a sedan drive slow and be extremely cautious. You don't want to damage your rental vehicle and end up paying for repairs. Let SUVs/4x4s pass you. Road is unpaved, rocky, and full of deep pot holes. There is a small section of paved road that has tall speed bumps. Beach: Short 10 min hike. This is the second further beach and not the one where the actual parking lot is. Most people park near the trail entrance ( that leads to the second nicer beach) just before the main parking lot. If you make it to the beach - you can snorkel, and boogie board. One of the few almost rockyless white sand beaches on Big Island. Mild to moderate waves. No showers. Really one of the quietest nicest beaches on Big Island but an obstacle to get to if you don't have an all terrain vehicle.

Wawaloli Beach Park, located on the Kona Coast, is a favorite among locals due to its protected coves and stunning sunsets. While the noise of passing jets may deter some tourists, the beach offers expansive sand and tide pools for exploration. However, swimming may not be ideal here. Visitors are advised to prioritize safety by avoiding cliff areas with powerful waves and slippery rocks.
Awesome place to watch the sunset. We stopped by right before our flight left, since it’s right next to the airport. You’ll be able to see planes arriving/leaving depending on the wind direction. Plenty of parking along the shore. There are some great tide pools to swim and relax in. I would visit again.
Chris L — Google review
Nice little beach with a pretty safe kid friendly area to get wet. There are a lot of little tide pools and areas on the lava rock to explore. The sunsets here are stunning, and it's a good place to watch the tide come in and splash along the rocks.
Tracy R — Google review
Always a family favorite. 3 stars because of public restrooms and shower facilities. Perfect for sunset viewing!
Makaio A — Google review
I'm not sure how anyone can call this place a "beach." It's a volcanic hellscape next to the water. There is no sand, just jagged and dangerous black lava as far as the eye can see! The funny thing is that the locals really seem to love it. Maybe it sadly reflects how desperate they have become to escape the onslaught of tourism. Anyways, I think this "beach" is definitely a MUST SKIP destination!
Michelle P — Google review
I look forward to visiting this area when in Hawaii. The way the water comes in and out is soothing. Keep an eye out for turtles and whales!

Great tide pools (saw three eels in one!) some sand and shade lots to explore for a wonderful beach trip.

Great place to chill n listen to the ocean. Bring your shade not much trees. A shower to rinse off after a dip in the pond. Not a good place to do Ocean swimming. Shoreline fish is ok, but watch the waves it can be dangerous.

Beautiful location, perfect sand, not many people. It was perfect. We saw two rainbows and had a great time enjoying the view. I would def return. This location you can see orbs in your photos. Keiki Beach Queen's Bath is a hidden gem located within Kekaha Kai State Beach. Accessible via a rough dirt road, this secluded spot offers stunning views and warm waters. Protected by a chain of rocks, the beach features tidal pools and abundant aquatic life, making it great for children to explore. While access may be tricky to find, the reward of this beautiful and tranquil beach makes the journey worthwhile.
Gorgeous quiet beach with calm waves and good water access. As other reviews have mentioned you must look for the public access path behind the ball fields. If you follow Google Maps, it takes you to the private drive. Just go to the right, you will find it. :)
Hailey W — Google review
Beautiful hidden gem. Perfect place for kids to swim since the water isn’t rough. Good little snorkeling spot. But not alot of sea life. The public access is behind the aquatic center. Enter the soccer field and follow the fence down on the left hand side.
KayLynn H — Google review
By state law, every beach must be publicly accessible, but this place is (yet another) example of people trying to make it as hard as possible. All the more reason to go! Park behind the aquatic center and follow the signs across the grass field. It’s not a long walk. The path is NOT handicap accessible, so be prepared to carry everything in and out, no strollers or wheelchairs or wagons. The gate is also ridiculously narrow, further denying the use of mobile aids. The state/county should address this. Good beach for keiki and kupuna, with calm waters due to a man-made barrier (that’s supposed to look natural but definitely isn’t). There’s space to sprawl out on the sand, but no shade or bathrooms or water fountains so be prepared. Some snorkeling space, but mostly good for wading. Be careful of urchins tucked in rocky areas, but the sandy spots are safe. Haven’t stayed for the sunset but I imagine it’s a nice spot for it.
C&J I — Google review
This beach is a hidden gem and beautiful. It was hard to find the public access. The road along the beach was private. We went just before a storm and it was very windy. We didn’t stay long.
Catherine H — Google review
The beach itself is amazing but getting there was a mission. There is no access through the road by foot or vehicle. There's a gated community but next to it there is a baseball field. We went around it through the dug out side and found beach access that way following the trees. It was not clear or straight forward. Thank goodness for a previous post with this info or otherwise we wouldn't have made it there. The beach is nice and calm, perfect for kids.
Mina C — Google review
Beautiful beach. Mostly lava rock with tidal pools. Doesn't seem like the best swimming area but you can see lots of aquatic life! Public access is behind the aquatic center and you have to walk across the soccer field. There's a little path behind the houses. It's a short easy distance and there are signs.
Jessica C — Google review
This little bay us protected from the surf so it is good for kids. There is a sandy beach but not much shade. There are lots of sea urchins so wear shoes and watch kids. Unfortunately not many tropical fish - at least not the day we were there in early February.
Doreen O — Google review
Very secluded beach, perfect for kids (shallow and warm). No waves at all. You can see fish amongst the rocks and I was able to snorkel for the first time here. There's no shade, so bring an umbrella (also no bathrooms). It is tricky to find. Park behind the aquatic center/gym and walk through the football field. You'll see a marked path which leads you through a residential area and to the beach.

Pine Trees Surfing Beach is a well-known local spot in the north of town, just north of Puhili Point. Accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles, this beach offers experienced surfers challenging waves and also features BBQ sites and tide pools. While not ideal for swimming due to its rocky terrain, it's perfect for picnics, sightseeing, surfing, and snorkeling.
Beautiful beach, not full of tourists, let's keep it this way. Great for relaxing and surfing, out if the way, beautifully quiet.
Matt C — Google review
I visited this beach on a Sunday afternoon and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The weekend is when literally a couple thousand people descend on this spot. The sand was lined with hundreds of tents and all the parking spots and every piece of ground you could possibly fit a car onto was filled. Imagine all this traffic on a skinny, one lane road! I was in a line of traffic when we all had to hit reverse and drive backwards in a long line simultaneously to let someone get through. No offense to the people. They seem like nice families having a great time. Crowds just aren't my thing. The beach is pretty but it's quite rocky with piles of boulders obstructing ocean entry. It's only good for hanging out or surfing if you are super experienced at it. Not a good place to swim. I'm sure it's less crowded during the week, but just be ware if you are headed that way on a weekend or holiday.
Michelle P — Google review
Great place to sit and watch the sun go down. A lot of locals will camp here, awesome place to chill with the kids or spouse and watch the sunsets

This used to be a great place to camp and enjoy the peace and quiet. Watch some surfing and chill. No more, It is now the "Party place" loud music all night and starts up early in the morning. If that is what you are into that this is the place. But if you like camp with family and try to enjoy the beach not so much. Oh and if you not the kine do not set up camp down at the end.

One of the long beach from the downtown of Kona. The shower facility and the restroom are available. Many rocks are in the ocean and you may need to wear the aqua shoes to protect your feet. The wind is strong and you may want to find some shade of the tree rather than unfolding the parasol.

This beach is awesome because it is free and the parking is plentiful. It's great for beach walking. If you do the length of the beach and back, it's exactly a mile. There is a lot of white sand and some good ocean entry for swimming. However, the facilities aren't too great. The restroom is boarded up, so you have to use portable toilets. Although, the showers outside the restroom are still in working order. There are a number of picnic pavilions, but they will all be taken on the weekend when this place fills up. But don't worry, you can still find space to enjoy yourself, even during busiest hours.

The beach may be small, but it has loads of soft white sand and a nice, gentle ocean entry that is protected from big waves. It's an awesome spot to cool off and frolick in the turquoise blue water. And the best part is that it is hardly ever crowded! I only saw three other people the day I visited.

Niumalu Beach has a nice setting with calm waters, picnic tables, and a grassy area that could make for a peaceful afternoon. Unfortunately, the experience is overshadowed by a large local homeless presence. It’s common to see people bathing in the water or leaving waste in the surrounding area, which raises concerns about cleanliness and safety. While the views are still beautiful, it’s hard to fully enjoy the spot given the conditions. This is more of a drive-by scenic stop than a place I’d recommend for spending the day.

Honl’s Beach is a small, quiet beach located on the sunny Kona coast of the Big Island. It offers swimming access to the water, but there are many rocks present. The area provides a nice spot to watch the sunset, although it's noted that homeless individuals inhabit the area, which may make some visitors uncomfortable. Despite this, it is recommended for a visit due to its peaceful atmosphere and limited crowds. The beach features clear waters and stunning views of lava rock formations.

Lisa B — Google review
Great beach spot with little to no parking. 🚗 Parking on the street is limited. Plan to walk 🚻 No Restrooms but a porta potty is available 🧺 Tables available 🌳 plenty of shade Waves are perfect for Bogie Boarding and good swimmers
