The Statue of King Kamehameha is located in North Kohala, the birthplace of the famous king who united the Hawaiian Islands. On June 11th, a birthday celebration includes a parade with beautifully dressed p'au riders and decorated horses. Visitors can enjoy a Hawaiian cultural program and witness the decoration of the statue near the historic courthouse. Additionally, Kamehameha Park offers local music and hula performances within walking distance.
Quite an impressive statue of King Kamehamea I. The historic town of Kapaau is worth a visit too. There is plenty of street parking available.
Walter R — Google review
After a scenic drive in the Kohala mountains, this historic statue is outdoors in the North Kohala Civic Center. It is smaller than the statues in Honolulu and Hilo.
Mark T — Google review
Took me over 20 years to visit and take pictures with ohana. I first came to Hawi or Upolu Point about 10 minutes drive in 1991 and never actually stopped and visited ( I didn't have a vehicle at the time!) Loved my visit with my Mom and best friend from Waimea and used the nice facilities by the police station with plenty of parking and NO Line!!
Celine M — Google review
Great little bit of history and a lovely monument. Close by shops are worth a visit
Phillip G — Google review
Impressive statue of King Kamehameha in Kapaau Hawaii. There is no admission fee , and there is free parking in front of the Old Kohala Courthouse ( the statue is on the lawn just in front of the courthouse). There is also a small restaurant and shops across the street .
Richard V — Google review
It's an Hawaiian culture site with tributes the king that brought all the islands together, and the fallen war veterans from the islands
Kyle A — Google review
Highlight of visiting North Kohala. IG photo op. Beautiful drive
Wong O — Google review
A nice place for an original statue of King Kamehameha from 1880! It is a wonderful reminder of the history of Hawai'i. I didn't walk in/around the building but there's lots of inflation if you like to read that. There is also a veterans tribute signage as well.

The Pololū Valley Lookout offers stunning views and access to a steep path leading down to a beautiful black sand beach. Unlike the more accessible Waipio Valley, reaching Pololu Black Sand Beach requires traversing the challenging Pololu Trail, making it a quieter and more remote spot to enjoy nature. The overlook provides breathtaking vistas of dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and deep azure waters. Hiking enthusiasts will find the trail a must-visit, but caution is advised due to its difficulty.
How can you look at this view and not believe God exists. I love the trees, wow so many good trees. After driving here my view about how cool trees are changed they are even cooler than I thought of before. I just love them. Also, the water was nice. So many crabs, it was like crab city down there.
Lotte A — Google review
Amazing lookout with trail and a sacred destination. Parking will be challenging so get here early, if possible. The hike to the bottom is steep with few switchbacks. I did see people of all ages walking the hike however do take cautions based on your physical condition. The views at the beach were amazing.
Shankar B — Google review
Beautiful scenic place with a black sand beach. Its a short hike down and not busy at all. Very much connected to nature and the ancestors here. The stillness is just breathtaking. Respect the rules of the park and stay on the path as it is private property.
Majury A — Google review
The views are absolutely gorgeous. You have to park on the street and check in with the guides before hiking down to the beach. Parking and entrance are free. The hike down was about 20 minutes. Back up is about 30-40 minutes. Highly recommend bringing sturdy shoes and water. The hike back up was a little strenuous but totally worth it. There is also another 10 minute hike into the valley. I would recommend spending around 3 hours here.
Kayli S — Google review
Incredible views. The hike to the beach is really challenging (800 ft decent over a half mile) but was really worth it. Parking was a little hard. Would absolutely recommend bringing water as the climb back up was draining.
Matthew O — Google review
This was definitely worth a stop while exploring the north side of the Big Island. The drive alone to the lookout was worth the adventure, but views of Polulu Valley put it over the top. There was a lady working (volunteering?) by the parking lot who was extremely friendly and was more than obliged to answer questions.
Joshua O — Google review
Nice hike. Be careful of rain. Feels like another planet when you’re at the black sand beach. Not much parking.
Pan L — Google review
We got some great information from the local who take care of the site. They’re very friendly and really gave us great information about the hike. You didn’t do it this time, but we plan to come back and hopefully do it another time.

Beautiful park. Limited wading behind a breakwater but no access to the ocean. Once you get there you’ll quickly see why. Huge breaking waves crashing over exposed rocks. No beach whatsoever. So no snorkeling, surfing, boogie boarding, kayaking, etc. Seems to be a local family place. We sat and enjoyed the view. The waves are amazing even on the two calm-day visits we’ve made. If you scramble out onto the breakwater you can get up-close to the breakers. It’s a long way from Kona or Hilo. Lovely.
Steve D — Google review
This beach looks amazing and it’s awesome for swimming hanging and viewing. Grass, sand, and pergola and parking well worth checking out. Great beach!
Jerome C — Google review
This is the cleanest beach park. Free too, no need to pay $20 admission. Plenty of fish for snorkeling. Look at the pictures
Rajeev M — Google review
Huge waves smack the rugged coastline in this small town quiet park. Stroll up to the top for views of the pacific in the look out tower. But tread lightly, scan the ground and trees! You may get lucky and see a few yellow-billed cardinal’s a beautiful bird hailing from South America and introduced to Hawaii.
Justin — Google review
Beautiful views and very peaceful. We enjoyed sitting on the rocks and watching the waves. There's not a lot to do here, but it would be the perfect stop for a picnic and restroom break. You can walk in the protected water area, but it doesn't look great for swimming.
Natalie N — Google review
Only a handful of vehicles here on our visit with our local friend from Waimea, Hawaii ok only a 35 minute drive after stopping at King statue and using facilities. Our friend had to show us this spot because it's her dream spot for a future wedding ceremony. I agree very very special with tremendous " mana" so definitely " kokua!!" 🙏🌈😍 I'm always grateful and counting my blessings to live and enjoy such sacred places of Hawaii islands ( definitely stolen 😭🙏) always remembering to be respectful and GRATEFUL for such beauty and tranquility! All about the Aina! Met a new animal friend!!
Celine M — Google review
We had a suprise! A very pregnant monk seal was there at the same time. I used a zoom lens for my camera. I stayed very far away.
Jodi J — Google review
There’s a great little bay perfect for children to swim and play in without having to worry about them being swept away by the waves. I see people surf and boogie board here, the big waves make it a good spot. It’s a great view and is always so gorgeous.

After exploring Keokea beach, visitors can find a welcoming and informative shop nearby. The staff there not only offers insight into the surrounding area but also showcases beautiful handmade jewelry for purchase. Additionally, patrons have the opportunity to admire stunning artwork at the neighboring Ackerman Galleries, Art By Gary Ackerman. For those seeking sustenance, Kings View Cafe provides a satisfying dining experience. Both establishments offer exceptional service and an assortment of Hawaiian-themed clothing, jewelry, kitchenware, and decorative items.
Julie was very helpful the first day. Other helpers were very helpful the second visit. Great selection of Hawaiian-themed clothing and jewelry, kitchen and decorative items. So nice that we drove back from Kona for a second day!

Sales people paid a 2% commission!? REALLY!? This should not be legal....Our labor department needs to step up in these times of economic hardship and make sure that the rights of ALL constituents are FAIRLY represented. Not just those of the biggest donors and other members of the local bourgeois. They are already pushing out Hawaiians and other economically oppressed minorities with real estate speculation and similar dubious endeavors which provide the requisite plausible deniability such that mainland investors are increasingly encouraged to relocate to Hawaii guilt free. Pardon the mini rant!
Zack W — Google review
We stopped here after visiting Kēōkea beach. The woman working in the shop was very friendly and even gave us some information about the area, and other places we should stop by. Got some lovely handmade jewelry to take back home. Got to view some awesome art. Then we went next door to Kings View Cafe and had a bite to eat.

Nature & Parks
Kapa'a Beach Park is a cool place to visit, although it's not ideal for swimming. The park offers camping facilities with picnic benches, toilets, and BBQ pits. It's a great spot for isolated camping, but be mindful of the bright lights that can be bothersome at night. The beach itself is rocky with large lava boulders and rocks, and it's not uncommon to spot whales in front of the park.
Very beautiful! Not crowded even when busy. Nice shade available in the trees there. Easy entrance and trail to drive your vehicle close to the water and tidal pools of you want. Very quiet and pleasant.
Robert K — Google review
This is a great area for swimming, SNORKELING, camping, and relaxing, with fewer crowds. Less sand, but mostly rocks and pebbles. Fishermen were present nearby. Nature cannot be beaten!
Rob H — Google review
Very small, no Sandy's beach but allowed to drink in the park 10am-10pm
Joel H — Google review
Another small gem of a park for folks who are into the vibe and not the amenities.
Raincountry — Google review
Not much going on here, but the view is pretty. There is a tiny bathroom that has seen better days and a few picnic tables. We did get to see some whales swimming offshore, which was cool. Also, the view of Maui was nice.
Chris B — Google review
Beautiful view but too rough to get into the water.
Allie F — Google review
We saw 3 whales swimming out in front of this park. Camping by permit. Shelter with picnic benches and two toilets. One official BBQ pit with a few other BBQ pits made out of lava rock down the trail to some flat land where you could pitch a tent to camp with a permit. Great camping area if you like a more isolated situation. No official campsites, just space you have to find, watch out for barbed wire fences.

Disc golf course

North Kohala Golf Park is a charming 9-hole par 3 course that offers a unique and enjoyable golfing experience. The course is known for its wild boars that roam the grounds, adding to the natural ambiance. It's a short and fun course where players can challenge themselves by using just one club or iron and putter.
This park is five star but a challenge. The wind seems to travel in almost every direction on any given hole! this disc golf course is kind of unique and that it shares its greens and fairways with the disc golf community. It has been my experience that the Disc golf community has good golf etiquette and respect. Enjoy your game! best wishes BJ.

Could be the best track on the island. I’ll stand behind that. Thank you, John, for your hospitality. Support this local gem to keep it flourishing. ⛳️
Satchel — Google review
I had a wonderful time playing these adorable 9 par 3 holes course twice. For all-day play and renting a set of clubs and a push cart, it cost me 20$. Such a fun experience if you're an average golfer who doesn't want to pay through the nose to get out on a course on the big island. Very laid back and I will definitely come back and play when I am on the northeast side of the island again.
Louis C — Google review
A 9 hole pitch and put. This is the first time I have tried golfing. This course was perfect for learning. I had YouTube coaches and some fun times with my nephew as we sliced and hunted for balls.
Chaz P — Google review
Great for kids and beginners, wonderful park in a great community.
David G — Google review
For practice and honing your skills it's perfect! Thanks to the volunteers who keep it in good shape.
Kathy D — Google review
North Kohala Golf Course offers a delightful experience with its 9-hole, par-3 layout, perfect for a quick and enjoyable round. The addition of frisbee golf adds a fun, unique twist, making it a must-visit for both traditional and frisbee golf enthusiasts. Highly recommended for a satisfying day on the greens.
Major H — Google review
Wherever we go we try and find a disc golf course to play! This one was great. VERY well maintained, the golfers were kind to us and we are so thankful. They have golf carts to rent and shaded seating. Be warned you do have to walk a LONG ways to holes 6-8. They are near the tank. But it was worth it! UDisc does have the course mapped!
