Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Fort de La Bastille à Grenoble is a 19th-century military fort located on Mount Rachais, overlooking the city of Grenoble. Accessible by a scenic cable car ride, the fortress offers panoramic views of the city and the River Isere. Originally fortified in the 1590s, it features defensive walls and bastions designed to protect the city from mountain invasions.
We had perfect weather for our visit to the Bastille. Took the cable carts up and down, which was a fun experience with great views on the way. Once at the top, we walked around and explored — the scenery was absolutely beautiful. We had lunch at the restaurant up there, which made the trip even more enjoyable. A lovely outing overall and definitely worth it if you're in Grenoble!

It’s more of a view point than anything else. But it’s a highly recommended place with an Awesome city and mountain view. Also there is an adventure activity centre for kids, where kids can enjoy as well. There are couple of other museums which we didn’t visit.
Umang J — Google review
Definitely worth visiting if in Grenoble. Not expensive at all. If you book a table at the cafe before hand, the ride up is slightly cheaper. Cafe has good food nd drink and the views are spectacular. The museum are good too. Not lots to see but interesting. Free/cheap. We spent half a day there. One star off as not a well maintained tourist spot.
Sean W — Google review
The "funicular " gondola ride is fun, but cramped if you're 6'+. Great views of the city from the bastille. Awesome place for hikers & runners. There are a lot of runners doing hill training here. Two great restaurants at the top.
Sid D — Google review
Nice view! You can also see the highest mountain in Europe from the top.
Elif O — Google review
Great views. Don't bother ordering anything from the restaurant. It's dirty, the staff don't give a hoot. The coffee is cold.
John S — Google review
In this case, the journey is more interesting than the destination First: how do you get there? If you’re not in good physical shape or have health issues (cardio-respiratory or mobility problems), it’s best to take the cable car. The downside is that you’ll miss the most beautiful part of the experience, the climb itself. If you’re able, I strongly recommend going on foot. From Grenoble, there are four main access routes: 1st through the Jardin des Dauphins and Guy Pape parks The 2nd one starting from the Saint-Laurent gate The 3rd one from the old Rabot fort The 4th via the road behind the fortress (for those arriving by car) In addition to these four routes, there are several mountain trails, for example, the path to the Mandrin Cave, but these require more time and proper hiking equipment. Walking up is worth it, because the fort isn’t only on the top of the mountain, it stretches along the mountainside. If you take the gondola lift, you’ll see very little of the fortifications. Depending on the route, you’ll pass by other points of interest: the terraces of the Jardin des Dauphins, the Rabot Fort and old officers’ barracks, the Giants’ Staircase, and the Saint-Laurent gate. My advice: go up one way and come down another. At the base of the mountain, you’ll also find some interesting (and free) museums: the Dauphinois Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Grenoble Museum... The top of the fort (the main attraction) is a bit underwhelming. Apart from the mountain views, there isn’t much to see. A few negatives: The fort itself cannot be visited. Most buildings are occupied by private businesses (a climbing club, for example), with restricted public access. Food and drinks are rather expensive. The unisex toilets are not the best choice (and not very clean either). Some of the bastions and covered stairways on the mountainside are dirty (though that’s partly due to careless visitors). avoid the old geography institute, it's just a rundown building with graffiti, falling into disrepair. And lastly: Grenoble itself isn’t the most spectacular city. The mountain backdrop is beautiful, but the city view is less so. In conclusion: I’m giving it 4 stars, but mostly for the journey rather than the fort itself. Those who go only by cable car would probably rate it three stars (or even less).

Museums
Musée de Grenoble is a long-established museum featuring a diverse collection of European art, including works by 13th-century masters. In addition to the museum, the area around Grenoble offers various other attractions such as the regional Musee Dauphinois with traditional furnishings and a section on skiing history, and the church-museum of Saint Laurent housing remains of a 6th/7th-century funerary crypt.
Well established museum in the city of Grenoble with lots of artwork and sculptures of various artists. The tour could take up to a couple of hours, and the entrance is free, but you'll need to get a ticket issued. The museum is very clean, well maintained and the staff were super friendly.

Very good art museum/gallery with almost every significant French artist represented. Mildly disappointed that one of the Monet’s was removed for restoration work as he is my favourite French artist, but other great works by Matisse, Chagall etc. as well as a large section dedicated to a contemporary art exhibit. Overall a great way to spend a rainy day in Grenoble.
Kent K — Google review
Grenoble is renown as the Capital of the Alps, so most of the people travel to the city for the surrounding mountains. Almost nobody comes to Grenoble for its museum, not even to visit it between two hikes. And that's a pity because Musee du Grenoble really deserves to be explored. Not only for the stunning views over the Alpine slopes and Isere river but also for the permanent exhibition, which include works of Matisse, Derain, Gauguin and Modigliani among others. . The entrance was free of charge during our visit (July 2025).
Ionut S — Google review
The permanent collection was free and there were great paintings. On a weekday late afternoon, there were only a few people which was an ideal environment for relaxing. They provide cozy black individual sofas which I appreciated greatly.
AA A — Google review
Although it cannot be compared to the Louvre or the Musee d'Orsay, the sheer depth of the collection in a local art museum is undeniable. It is definitely worth a visit. There is one thing I noticed this time. I realized that masterpieces have a unique composition that keeps you entertained. The paintings housed here are second to none in terms of technique. However, I felt that the compositions lacked ingenuity. I apologize for sounding like an amateur, but this is still a museum that everyone should visit at least once. You can take your time to appreciate the art.

Parc Paul Mistral is a refreshing escape in the heart of Grenoble, offering ample green spaces and a welcoming atmosphere for families and friends. Originally built as an exhibition space in 1925, this park boasts a rich history and cultural significance, highlighted by the iconic Tour Perret. Spanning 27 hectares, it stands as the city's largest park, reminiscent of renowned urban parks like Jardin des Tuilleries and Hyde Park.
A nice park for walking and relaxing in the evening. The tower there was under construction when I visited. There is a good place for kids to play, and also there is a dog park within the park itself.

In the heart of Grenoble's historic center lies the charming Jardin de Ville, a picturesque city park that has been open to the public since 1719. This leafy oasis along the Isere River features a playground, fountain, and bandstand, making it an ideal spot for outdoor concerts during the summer. The park is adorned with century-old trees and is home to various sculptures and monuments, including busts of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Pierre Baiteux.

Halles Sainte-Claire is a covered food market in Grenoble, known for its local producers offering walnut-based products like oil, liqueur, and pastries. The market resembles a pint-sized version of Les Halles in Paris and features traditional fruit and vegetable stalls along with traders selling pastries, cheeses, and hot dishes. Despite its small size, the market reflects the habits of modern shoppers and is bustling with activity on weekends.
Nice food and fresh market

I bought mackerel fishes here and the price is very reasonable. 2 stalls selling fishes and seafood as well inside the market.
Normaziah M — Google review
Only a small market, but you get all you can expect from a market and a little bit more. Especially inside there's for example a young man selling excellent regional cheese as well as special fair trade chocolate (try this!!!), a wonderful walnut cream...!
Marcel W — Google review

Bill P — Google review
It’s a smallish under roof market but still worth a visit. My visit was only marred by a mix up over my order for 250gms of ham which somehow the service person took to mean 25 slices. This was after repeatedly telling her two five zero grams in English and sign language. How she interpreted this as 25 slices is beyond me! Arrrgh 😡😡😡 Be warned but don’t let that put you off.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame is a Catholic cathedral complex with Gothic interiors and 18th-century art. Despite its plain medieval exterior, this French national monument has a rich history dating back 1,700 years. It survived religious wars and the French Revolution, preserving Renaissance-era art including a 14-meter high stone screen and rare wooden carvings depicting the life of Christ. The cathedral is located in downtown Grenoble, within the popular districts of Ile Verte and Notre-Dame.
The church is quite old and fascinating. Sunday prayers we going on when we went there. The church had a very pleasant odur of candles and very peaceful environment. If I lived in grenoble I would be dropping by here very frequently to meditate and pray. It's a must visit architecture. Not much tourist around.
Thejus — Google review
Aspect from outside does not make you think there is a cathedral there, which is a surprise. Reading a bit through we understand this one has a long history, notably related to the Chartreux Monks. A smaller church is literally "appended" to it (access through the cathedral).

Musée archéologique Saint-Laurent is a historical gem located in Grenoble, France. It houses a well-known 6th-century crypt within a historic church and offers audio guides for visitors to explore its ancient artifacts. The museum provides an opportunity to witness incredibly preserved ruins from a 4th-century necropolis, showcasing 1500 years of funerary and religious history.
Excellent museum. There was a lot of effort put into the audio guides which was appreciated. The staff were friendly but most of the information was relayed by the audio guide. This was the best museum I visited in Grenoble.
Filly B — Google review
This stunning archaeological site is like no other museum I have visited. The beautiful church that sits on the mountain side has had the ground excavated and is now protected from the elements by new modern structures. Make sure you take the audio guide, it really brings the site to life.
Dan M — Google review
Not my cup of coffee... A collection of skeletons, old graves, and very deep wells. Unless you’re passionate about archaeology (and I mean REALLY passionate), there isn’t much to see here. In short, the positive points: 1. Location – in the old part of the city, close to the "Escalier des géants", one of the most beautiful and challenging roads leading to the Bastille fort. 2. The building itself – an old monastery, very well preserved. 3. Free admission. 4. Audio guide – available in almost all international languages. Unfortunately, the information it provides isn’t particularly engaging. 5. Light and sound effects in the crypt – actually, that’s the only truly interesting thing in the museum. 6. Interior layout – the museum is well organized, with signs, glass floors, and walkways that allow visitors to explore (almost) every nook and cranny. Cons: 1. Too morbid and too repetitive for my taste. 2. The annoying temporary exhibition that also ruined my visit to the Dauphinois Museum – piles of clothes scattered haphazardly among the tombs and along the monastery walls.
Catalin H — Google review
This place was amazing!! It was free to enter and we got a handheld tour guide device. Its incredible to see the work put into the excavation and was really great to see.

Deshan S — Google review
a small but really immersive museum, the audio guide is very good considering it’s free
Given T — Google review
One of the most engaging museums I have ever seen. The brilliant design allows visitors to walk among (up to) 2000 year old archaeological findings that are in situ, which is unique and quite remarkable. At one point in the tour, you will stand and freely walk in a 1500 year old crypt, with all original adornments (no replacement replicas), and walk along ancient pathways and stairs. The long history of this site, from Roman necropolis to Catholic Church to Benedictine monks and back to church again, all cleverly displayed. There are Indiana Jones vibes to some sections of the audio tour (very much in a good way). The staff are professional and courteous. This is a highly recommended stop while in Grenoble, do not miss it.

Nestled along the banks of the Isère River, the Musée Dauphinois is a captivating destination for those eager to delve into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century convent, this museum showcases an impressive array of ethnographic and historic artifacts that highlight local folk arts, crafts, and traditional furnishings. One unique aspect of its collection is dedicated to skiing history, reflecting Grenoble's deep connection with winter sports.
Great little museum, some great stuff to see and even has English on the descriptions which is helpful if your French isn't strong. It is free to enter, a little confusing how to get around, but overall worth the walk. Plan to spend maybe 2 hours to see it all, a bit more of you want to watch all the videos and such.
Paul D — Google review
Well worth a visit. The description does not really clearly describe it. It is very peaceful and relaxing, with seats in the lovely gardens where you could just take a book and stay. The exhibition on the history of the mountain communities around Grenoble is very good.
Claire S — Google review
An unusual experience... and not necessarily in a good way. This museum is so unusual that I honestly don’t even know what category to put it in: ethnographic museum, local museum, art museum, history museum… maybe all of the above, or none at all. Let’s start with the good points: 1. The location is superb (the museum is situated in one of Grenoble’s historic districts, at the foot of the mountain crowned by the famous Bastille fort) 2. The building, an old monastery from the 17th century, is beautiful (and, I have to say, very well-preserved) 3. The gardens are undoubtedly the highlight — if you bring something to read, you can easily spend a few quiet hours there, especially in summer, when the heat suffocates the citY 4. The collections are, for the most part, beautiful and interesting 5. The baroque church hall is spectacular (especially if you’re into religious art) 6. The interior design of the exhibition rooms is pleasant 7. Information is presented in many different ways — classic leaflets, audio-video materials, models, and even a 3D virtual tour of the baroque hall 8. Admission is free Now, the not-so-good points: 1. The museum feels like a “collection of collections,” some of which have absolutely nothing to do with life in the Alps — for example, an exhibition of African art, which, while lovely, seemed rather misplaced (it would have fit much better in an art museum) 2. As a result of this mix-and-match approach, the layout is somewhat chaotic, and if you’re not paying attention, you might easily miss a few rooms 3. And then there’s the biggest drawback: the temporary exhibitions. When I visited, they were hosting a “contemporary art” exhibition — as you can see in the photos, piles of used clothes scattered on the floor and others hanging from strings all over the monastery. I have no idea what the artist was trying to say, but if the message was “I didn’t feel like tidying up,” it came across loud and clear. In the end, I’ll still give it 4 stars — but mostly for the gardens, and not for the museum itself...
Catalin H — Google review
Nice museum, good collection of historical art and the entrance is free. The chapel was closed. The view of the city, halfway the ascend, is pretty. There's a good climb and stairs to go up there.
Ash — Google review
Interesting museum housed in a former monastery, located on a steep hill above Isere river. Walking to the museum from the riverfront is an entertaining experience itself due to the nice views over Grenoble. There was no entrance fee when we visited (July 2025). The museum garden is a gem, as well as the former monastery cloister with a massive wood installation on display, reminding a monster with huge tentacles popping out from the ground.

The Museum of the Resistance and Deportation of Isère in Grenoble offers a poignant exploration of the city's wartime experience during the Nazi occupation. Established by former resistance fighters and deportees, this museum houses a collection of around 5,000 objects including photographs and documents from that era. It provides a specific focus on Grenoble's active resistance movement and the stories of those deported due to their religion or political beliefs.
The Museum is free and fantastic but the air conditioning didn't work on this visit that made it an awful environment to see the terrific and thought provoking exhibits and artifacts. It was my second visit but it was a super hot day in Grenoble that detracted greatly but it is one of the best museums on the subject.

Very good visit. Well worth finding out what happened during WW2 in Toulouse - Resistance and Deportation - wise. The museum is on two levels and well presented. Most of the exhibits are naturally in French. Some also in English - relevant for me. There were also some exhibits about the SOE involvement in the French resistance and some horrific stories of fighters being deported to some of the Nazi concentration camps. Good stories and bad but worth a visit and the staff were friendly too. Finally, the museum is situated in a nice part of Toulouse close to some beautiful parks. Oh! And last of all - it's free! A very moving and informative exhibit. The multimedia presentation is excellent. This is a must-see during any visit to Grenoble. Allow yourself at least 1 to 1-1/2 hours to take it all in.

This is a very honorable museum. It honors the heroism of the resistance and remembers the disgrace of the deportation. I was lucky enough to see it with my grown son and to be able to talk about history with him. For me personally, five stars because it remembered the liberating army that my dad was in

Nestled in the heart of Grenoble, the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché is a captivating destination for history aficionados and art enthusiasts alike. Housed within a magnificent 13th-century former bishop's palace, this museum offers a compelling glimpse into the region's rich cultural legacy. Visitors can explore an extensive array of historical artifacts such as sculptures, paintings, and tapestries spanning from prehistoric times to the 20th century.
We were welcomed in with friendly faces speaking English. One of the only places open in Grenoble in March. The place is free and holds a HUGE amount of information. The displays are beautifully created. They cover archaeology , war times, common people living across thousands of years. There's an audio guide in different languages. Also has clean toilets. It was a great, surprising find.

Exceptional collection of Roman artefacts from early Christian times. These were located at the site of the museum during more recent constriction. Incredible display beneath the museum that has been beautifully presented. The temporary photographic display from talented and daring Tairraz family is not to missed. Recording early days of alpine climbing in the nearby Mt Blanc region was the highlight of the visit.

Really great museum, where you can learn the detailed history of Grenoble. It's free to visit and they even give a free English audio guide that I can highly recommend. It takes at least an hour to see it all.

Excellent museum! (Texts are only in french though). Unlike most "local" archeological museums, where you get always the very same basic information and context, this museum provides a lot of extra, interesting information: lots of maps, old drawings, very detailed tags about all objects, etc. I loved it!
Rafael N — Google review
It’s a great museum in wonderful historical building. There is a Roman ruin in the basement that was discovered when they were building the tram lines. You can see the room where they did baptisms and all the artifacts that were found there. The lead pipe that used to bring water to the baptistery is still visible in the ruins. All the other exhibits, on the upper floors, are really well organized and interesting. There’s prehistoric artifacts, Roman weapons, paintings and other interesting exhibitions. All the signs and descriptions are in French, but you can use a translate app if you need to. Also it’s free!

I was in the neighborhood and decide to check the stadium. It looks very nice and well maintained from the outside. The architecture of the roof is impressive. Unfortunately I was just for a few days in Grenoble and there were no football games scheduled. I am sure it will be great to watch a game on such a nice stadium.

This small heritage museum is a great tribute to the accomplished writer Henri Beyle, who spent his formative years here. Highlights include manuscripts, lithographs, and other artifacts from Stendhal's life. Audio guides are recommended to fully appreciate the collection.
A small cosy museum. Has an audioguide in French and English, as well as printed info in these and several more languages. A very nice place to learn about Stendhal as a living human being and as a writer. I had not read Stendhal and knew nothing about his personal life. Yet I found the museum interesting and inspiring. Both the entrance and the audioguide are free - you just have to tell the receptionist where you come from. The museum is located deep inside an old building, which is also an opportunity to learn a bit about local architecture - the building's inner yard is very similar to those in old Lyon.

(Translated by Google) A marvel of historic restoration/preservation nestled in the heart of downtown Grenoble. It's by far a must-see if you're passing through the city, especially since, like many other museums in the city, the visit is free. Of course, it's relatively quick to complete given that the site only covers one apartment. The documents on display are of great value and provide insight into the history and lifestyle of the man. The only drawback is the somewhat restrictive opening hours, but it's not a major drawback.

We had a lovely two night stay in the suite, which was huge. We had not realised it was a training hotel until we got there. That said the staff were excellent, very attentive especially the receptionist on our arrival & the receptionist who dealt with our request re: the safe needing a new battery. We had dinner at the hotel on our second night. The food was lovely and plentiful. Also very good value for money. Booking is advised as the restaurant is very popular. Despite the staff being young, and at times a language barrier, they were generally helpful and friendly. It was wonderful to see so many young adults "learning on the job". The tutors were excellent role models and extremely helpful. We would definitely return and recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Grenoble. It has an olde worldy charm, is well maintained and very clean.

No sign. No markings. After all the management doesn't have to care, as they are paid the same if there is a million visitors, or only the artist and the artist's family. Actually, many visitors would be too much trouble, so why bother? Closed for weeks, sparsely located art, the space is simply too large for what they usually exhibit here. Also, there is are only a few parking spaces, and those are taken by the employees, or the locals living in the buildings near the hall.

Nestled in the heart of Grenoble, the Muséum de Grenoble is a treasure trove for both art and nature enthusiasts. This remarkable museum boasts an impressive collection of nearly 1.5 million specimens, ranging from fossils to minerals, plants, and animals. Art lovers will be captivated by its extensive array of over 800 artworks that span from the 13th to the 20th century.
The museum is free to enter but you still need to register yourself in the front desk. Basically its divided by three topic: the taxidermy, fossils and stones/crystal. When I went there, there were a lot of children and i guess its a good educational experience for them!
Fairuz A — Google review
This is a great place to take the kids! The exhibit is covers the ground floor plus two upper floors. The exhibit on the first floor (second floor for Americans) covers the fauna of the Alps with plenty of animals to see. The upper floor has geology from the region. On the ground floor opposite the ticket counter and next to the gift store is the display for prehistoric flora and fauna. English is available on some of the exhibits. In the Jardin behind the museum is a play area when the kids need to burn energy.

A beautiful museum. The building itself is wonderful. The staging of the animal species is spectacular, a work of art, full of drama, managing to give each animal the leading role in the scene, you can even hear the birds singing while they show you which bird it corresponds to. A truly varied insectarium with species that are very well preserved and adapted so that everyone can appreciate them. The rock room is phenomenal, plus the plant garden and vivarium are completely wonderful. Absolutely recommended.

Its not a huge museum but they have a wide variety of things from taxidermied animals, minerals, a LOT of fossils I loved staring at the fossilized flowers and the dinosaur eggs, but my favorites were the crystalized bark, they have some really pretty pieces. the touchscreen guides work but,,, barely. i gave up on them halfway but my visit was enjoyable nonetheless.

Notable landmarks like the newly established Grenoble Courthouse add to its appeal. In addition to its business allure, Club Europole SARL boasts an inviting gym environment that caters to fitness enthusiasts of all levels.
It is a neighbourhood gym with a fantastic atmosphere. The gym, despite not being in a large area, is spacious, with lots of weight training equipment, cardio machines and a large room for supervised activities. The owners are young, vibrant and friendly. For me, it's the best place to train in Grenoble, for weight training as well as recreational and cardiovascular activities. It may not have the biggest and best facilities in town, but it doesn't need them to offer a professional, individualised and overly fun experience. It is a top notch gym💪🏽

Make sure to check if this gym really fits your needs and workout style! Friendliness of staff: 5 Stars, nice, helpful and welcoming Cleanliness: 5 Stars, one of the cleanest gym I've ever seen Price and Contract: 5 Stars, very fair priced, contracts also offered for 3 months or have a year and not only 1 year. Maintenance of Equipment: 4-5 Stars, a bit old but well maintained Suitability for Beginners or people that just want to lift a bit and do courses: 4-5 Stars, definitely worth it! Suitability for people that want to seriously build muscle or strength: 2 stars. This is a real problem here: Dumbbells and free benches are few and too light. Barbells are very delicate, nothing compared to Olympia barbells and similar ones. Benches for bench pressing (flat/inclined) only allow for a pretty tight grip. Squats are not nice at all because the rack is not suited well for squats (Your face touches the mirror when you try to get the barbell on your shoulders). Overall I'm torn giving this a total mark, because it highly depends on your style of training. I feel like adding proper benches, barbells and dumbbells would make this a very versatile and great gym, but like that its just a temporary solution for frequent lifters.

Tour Perret, located in Grenoble, is a significant landmark that has been standing since May 4th, 1925. This tower is a symbol of the city's industrial development and is set to celebrate its centenary soon. The town hall has pledged to renovate the building due to the deterioration of its cement structure over time. Tour Perret was the world's first steel-reinforced concrete tower and offers stunning views from the top.
This tower has been in Grenoble since 4th May 1925. So it will be 100 years old very soon. I believe the town hall has promised to renovate the building as the cement it is built from has been cracking and falling apart over the years. It was the first steel reinforced concrete tower in the world apparently.

From Wikipedia: The Couvent des Minimes de Grenoble (English: Minim Monastery of Grenoble) is a former monastery constructed about 1644 by the Minim friars, a semi-contemplative mendicant order, which is located on the Rue du Vieux Temple in Grenoble, France. Occupied by several institutions since the expulsion of the friars during the French Revolution, it is currently used as a student dormitory and the former chapel serves as a concert hall, particularly as the base of the orchestral group, Les Musiciens du Louvre.
