Nestled in the heart of the Thiou Canal, Palais de l'Île is a captivating medieval castle and former prison that has been transformed into an art and history museum. This 12th-century landmark has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a courthouse, mint, and residence for the Dukes of Savoy. Today, it stands as a picturesque symbol of Annecy's rich history and architectural heritage.
Early September and got good weather. A bit chilly in the morning but got better later. Don't expect to see much more than what the pictures show. Very picturesque but keep in mind this was an old jail so keep in mind what you are looking at.

This is Annecy `s most popular place. It is beautiful during the day as well as in the evening when it is lighted. We also visited it inside. Entrance fee is Euro 6. However we did not find anything interesting - rooms with information and that`s all. During the years the house has had various functions: it has served as prison, court and administrative building. If you take a look at the opposite direction from the bridge in front of it the view it is even more beautiful - there is a small waterfall and nice colorful buildings.
Яна Т — Google review
The Palais de l'Île is a stunning piece of medieval architecture and an iconic landmark nestled in the heart of Annecy's old town. Set dramatically in the middle of the canal, it’s incredibly picturesque—perfect for photos, especially from the nearby bridges. Walking by it feels like stepping into a storybook. The museum inside offers a good glimpse into Annecy's history, including the building’s use as a prison and administrative center. The rooms are small but atmospheric, with just enough information to keep it interesting without being overwhelming. Exhibits include historical artifacts and some temporary displays that are a nice surprise. That said, it’s a relatively quick visit—about 30 to 45 minutes tops—so manage expectations if you're looking for a full-scale museum experience. Some areas could use more detailed explanations or interactive features. Still, the value is fair for the entry price, and it's worth a stop, especially if you enjoy architecture or local history. Tip: try to go early in the day or during off-hours to avoid the crowds, and combine your visit with a stroll around the charming old town.

Former prison, it's a museum now and yhe entrance is free. Not so interesting but the castle itself is very cool
Namig G — Google review
Dark little piece of history masked as a picturesque building dividing Le Thiou. Once a medieval prison and fortified house, now a museum dedicated to the region's architecture and heritage, the Palais has served several purposes over time as a mint, an administrative center, a barracks, a elderly home, and a temporary stonemasonry school. If anything, simply an icon of Annecy’s heritage, and worth a visit for a simple picture in day or illuminated at night.
Max R — Google review
We bought a combined ticket at Musée-Château d'Annecy and visited on a Monday afternoon. It was a 3 minute walk from the museum. It’s worth a visit if you are in Annecy.

Very unique place with a vast amount of history! They do a great job showing the history and what it and the city has went through over the years.
Austin J — Google review
Nice place to visit since it is the postcard from Annecy from the outside. 5 euros tickets, it will take you under an hour to spend here. We liked that the palais was a prison once upon a time and you can visit the cells.

Perched on a hill overlooking the old town, Musée-Château d'Annecy is a restored medieval castle that has been transformed into a museum. Constructed over four centuries from the 12th to 16th centuries, it was once the residence of the Counts of Geneva and Dukes of Genevois-Nemours. The castle now houses regional sculptures, paintings, and contemporary art, offering visitors a captivating journey through time.
Especially the museum is worth to visit this castle. You get a huge variety of exciting views into modern arts, history and also geographical and natural development of the whole region. You should not miss this. The entrance fee is very fair for what they offer!
Stefan R — Google review
It is a very impressive building, and the refurbishment of it is very impressive. Lots of history and at the moment has an art exhibition, which will please a lot of people, but I am afraid I am still old school. At 6.50 euros, it is great value. WC's are available in a couple of places, so no need to cross your legs. It's a shame they don't have rides to the top, from the market, but it was very hot, 31 degrees today. 20.06.25. A great visit, thank you 😊
DJGintheforest — Google review
There’s a fair few pieces of nice work in many mediums. I’m not so much of a fan of the modern artwork, but I loved a lot of the sculptures and landscape paintings. Much prefer the museum opposite.
Angela L — Google review
It is worth the effort to walk up the short but steep hill to the chateau for the views alone but it was also worthwhile going inside. Lots of interesting art, both old and new (ish). It's a pretty cheap place to visit and you can go when it suits, no need to book ahead of time. We spent about an hour there which was more than enough. Takes about 10mins to walk there from the base of the hill on old town.
Craig C — Google review
A must-visit in Annecy! ⭐️ Beautiful, historic, and very memorable! The castle offers stunning views of the lake and mountains, and the museum inside has a fascinating collection of regional art and history.
Tran N — Google review
Great expectations… and disappointments to match As impressive as the castle looks from the outside, the visit itself was just as disappointing. I'll start with what I liked (because this list is way shorter than the one with the negative points): 1. The painting gallery, where you can admire several works (originals, according to the supervisors) by great painters, including a small painting by Fragonard and, most notably, "The Massacre of the Innocents" by Pieter Brueghel the Younger 2. The (temporary) exhibition "L’épopée burgonde" - the arrival and installation of the Burgundians in Haute-Savoie region 3. Behind the castle, there is a spot from which you can admire Lake Annecy surrounded by mountains What I didn’t like: 1. Most of the rooms in the main castle building are completely empty: no furniture, drawings, paintings, period clothing, weapons, courtly objects… nothing but cement and wood 2. An almost total lack of information — the organizers didn’t bother to put up even basic informative panels, so many tourists wandered around speculating: “this was probably where…” 3. Many areas inside the castle are not accessible to the public 4. The old shooting holes have been “completed” with modern windows, which not only spoil the charm of the building, but also prevent visitors from taking photos, as the glass is far from transparent 5. The modern art exhibition is absolutely ridiculous — in fact, it’s not art at all (I’ll upload a picture so you can judge the quality of these so-called “works”). On top of that, the exhibition takes up many rooms on the upper floor — so many that it felt like it would never end 6. The other two buildings of the complex host exhibitions that have nothing to do with a medieval castle; for example, one of them focuses on the fauna of the nearby lake and on fishing vessels… well, if I want to know more about the fish in the lake, I’ll go to a fish-farming museum or a natural science museum, right? 7. In the basement of one of the towers there are several tiny aquariums, poorly maintained and without plants for the animals to hide in; each contains a few unhappy fish swimming in endless circles 8. The crenels of the towers have also been covered with windows through which you can’t take pictures (in fact, you can’t even see properly). This is even more frustrating because some of these windows overlook the beautiful Lake Annecy 9. If you’re thinking of climbing the walls or the fortified gate, think again — access is prohibited 10. On top of everything, I stood in line for tickets for a very long time… and I really regret doing so. Final score: 2 stars, and those only for the art gallery (which could just as well have been housed elsewhere, not in a restored medieval castle) and for the exhibition dedicated to the Duchy of Burgundy. Without them, even one star would have been too generous.
Catalin H — Google review
A wonderful castle standing on a slightly higher point in Annecy. One of the steep hills brings you there (not too steep for a wheelchair apparently as Ive seen people go up with some help) Be sure to check it out, sometimes it even has expositions inside, also the view from the castle is excellent
Toonfield A — Google review
Nice place to visit you can buy a multi ticket to also visit the old prison in town which takes about an hour then time for a coffee and then up the steep hill to the beautiful château. Lots to see very interesting.

Located near the Canal du Thiou, Église Notre Dame de Liesse was completed in 1851 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has become a sanctuary where the counts of Geneva buried their families. The church features a 16th-century clock tower and Gothic stained glass windows from the 15th century, adding to its beauty and historical significance.
Simply an amazing church in the heart of Annecy , the Architecture is simply mind blowing with its massive arches throughout the church and side alcoves . It is a special place , the alter in huge , the statues and art on the walls fantastic . As always there are simple wood pews that add to the serenity of this special place . Definitely well worth a visit when your in town .
Aidan M — Google review
Founded in the 14th century by the Counts of Geneva, the church was constructed on the site of an ancient oratory and a medieval square, near a medieval hospice, underscoring the area’s long-standing religious significance. It served as a necropolis for the comital family. During the French Revolution in 1793, the church suffered significant damage, with its choir destroyed and the building repurposed. Restoration efforts between 1846 and 1851 led to the reconstruction of the church, preserving elements like the 16th-century bell tower and a Gothic window on the south wall .

Amazing place to see. The crypt is a whole other church. Quite the walk up if you dare it. Very decorated which surprised given its younger than expected. Great views from there as well. There is a nice winding path you can take coming down. You are also very close to the Roman theatre and museum

Notre-Dame de Liesse Church in Annecy is a serene sanctuary, renowned for its miracles, particularly for women wishing to conceive. Many visitors have made wishes here and experienced the joy of pregnancy. The church features a special wall where numerous testimonials of these miracles are marked, offering hope and inspiration to those seeking to become mothers.
Lina B — Google review
The church seems preserved in its original form but does not seem to be well maintained. Requires a huge amount of refurbishment. The floors are wooden, therefore they will creek as you walk through the aisle. The stained glass windows seem to be in a decent condition but it's sad to see that the paintings on the walls and dome ceiling has deteriorated significantly.
Dr R — Google review
Views of Lyon were spectacular! Church was impressive and stained glass windows were lovely.
Linda T — Google review
The church was built between 1846 and 1851 on the site of a very damaged primitive sanctuary of which certain elements have been preserved: the 14th century bell tower and a Gothic window on the south wall. In front of the church, there is a large square, surrounded by cafés and shops, called "Notre-Dame". In 1859 the town council installed an obelisk fountain with lions and turtles.

(Translated by Google) This small apartment in 2 pieces separated by a cold and "crazy" staircase is only 24m² and not 40m² as announced before our visit, because there are 16 m² which are under 1m80 in height and this space allows you to squat or hit your head. The photos are misleading. The exterior building on which it depends is a horror and must be restored, because nets prevent the pieces from falling on passers-by! The only interest, the apartment and right in the center between SNCF station and Lake. Get it checked and you'll be looking for something else! Barbara, the owner is nice by phone from Switzerland but does not come on site... I advise against it. I can provide you with photos if you wish. Fascinating history and of religious importance. It's stunningly beautiful inside and high up overlooking Annecy and the lake. Highly recommended!

Walked all the way around the basilica until we reached it. Awe inspiring. It’s a newer church, but the craftsmanship of the church itself is nice. Inside the church is magical all it’s own. The garden/yard of the church must be private and the church must keep that to themselves. Well worth the visit with nice views of Annecy.

Located near the Lake Annecy and in the centre of town. The church is big and beautiful. The church has many beautiful intricately designed religious artefacts. It seems to me that within the church lie the remains of Saint Francois and Saint Jeanne de Chantal cause i saw what looked like their tombs. The walls are white and they brighten up the church. The chairs or benches look like ther are of a different era The church is a good place to visit if you are around the area. The church certainly needs a lot of maintenance to save the beautiful artefacts. The altar is stunning.
Dr R — Google review
The church is located next to the canal flowing into the lake Annecy. Beautiful church understated on the outside but full on inside, great position.
Con S — Google review
The church was built in 1614 in baroque style. It housed the tombs of Juana de Chantal and Francisco de Sales, which were later moved to the Basilica of the Visitation. During the French Revolution, the church was transformed into a factory. In 1923 it was handed over to the religious and restored in 2003. From the stairs at the entrance you can see the pleasant atmosphere around the Palais de l'lle.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, once a chapel for a Franciscan priory, is an ornate cathedral featuring vaulted ceilings and a majestic pipe organ. Located in Annecy, it stands as a historical and architectural gem amidst the charming surroundings of Les Balmettes and Canal Saint-Dominique. The cathedral offers visitors a serene atmosphere to admire its intricate design and rich history.
The cathedral of Saint Pierre has architectural marvels. 16th century, oldest church in the city. Has a gothic styles interior with wonderful craftsmanship. Free to enter so worth a visit.

Originally constructed between 1535 and 1538 as a chapel for the Cordeliers convent, the building gained prominence in 1538 when it became the refuge for the Bishop of Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. Elevated to cathedral status in 1822, it has since stood as the seat of the Diocese of Annecy. Notably, during the French Revolution, the cathedral was repurposed as a “Temple of Reason,” reflecting the era’s secular ideologies .
Wisanu T — Google review
Very beautiful cathedral, and entering it was very serene and blessed.
Ash — Google review
The Cathedral stands in between buildings near to the Police Municipal. There are two stairways that bring you to the front (entrance) of the church. The Cathedral holds a charm of the old very well, does not look run down like some of the other churches around. Still, the Cathedral needs maintenance. The high ceiling of the Cathedral is able to enable any hymns sung in the Cathedral sound majestic. The doors of the Cathedral stood out since many of the other church doors seem to have been replaced with plywood or so it seems. The main structure of the church is made of granite and marble. The interior of the church seems to have been designed splendidly using good wood. The doors are open to public since the church is situated in the middle of touristy areas.

Annecy Cathedral is set in a small side street with an under average facade, more looking like an ordinary Church than a Cathedral. The interiors are nice due to beautiful stained glass and a rose window.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful church in the heart of Annecy. Walking past, you might not expect such a pretty interior. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful; you immediately feel at home. The interior is bright, with beautiful stained-glass windows and many details to admire. You can feel the place has a real history. I really liked the blend of simplicity and beauty; nothing too elaborate, just enough to create a soothing atmosphere. Even if you're not religious, it's worth spending a few minutes inside. It's a little haven of peace right in the center. A place not to be missed if you're passing through Annecy, especially for a quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding streets.

The Eglise Sainte Bernadette, also known as the Catholic church of Sainte Bernadette, is a stunning place of worship in Annecy. It showcases a beautiful Christmas crib and incorporates modern technology, such as video projectors, to allow attendees to follow the Mass while adhering to social distancing measures. The church is highly regarded for its respectful approach and commitment to barrier gestures.
This beautiful church is designed as a modern church unlike the older artistic French churches. The interiors of the church have incorporated the new French architecture with wood that seems like plywood. It seems to be a fairly new church situated in the centre of homes and apartments. The altar seems modern with the crucifix at the side of the church. No stained glasses like other church but artpieces that represent spirituality are on the altar. They are sparse, beautiful and convey the intended spiritual message to followers The organ on the right side of three altar looks huge and glorious. One can imagine its magnificence when played. The church is huge and can hold atleast a thousand people. Makes for a great wedding venue. The stations of the cross are depicted using roman numerals with no pictures or carvings as in other churches. The church has a fairly huge compound that includes a cafe and a gardening area. The church is situated in a great location with Lake Annecy about 500 odd steps away.

(Translated by Google) A Wonderful Church that I have known for a very long time. I saw this church being transformed and renovated. The priest of this church, Father Michel Tournade, is of great humanity and greatness of soul. Always listening to people. Evelyne, her sacristan, is there to help her with her work and her meetings. A priest's café open to all, for individuals or groups. Shared gardens are lights of happiness, when our dreams fly over our mountains... Young people from time to time enliven this wonderful Church with songs that are a pleasure to hear. Other groups of singers also come sometimes. Parish rooms are available for all spiritual or other events. I find this church magnificent and beautiful, which offers moments of prayer and sharing. May hope come to our heart and soul. City Hall
Hôtel de Ville d'Annecy, a neoclassical building from the Sardinian period, has undergone recent restoration to bring out its decorative elements hidden under a uniform greyness. The town is often described as the "French Venice" and is known for its enchanting village close to Geneva. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful Lake Annecy and take boat rides at an affordable price.
The atmosphere was stellar, and the town was super clean. The city hall was under renovation, so I didn't take photos of it. Opposite to it was this attractive brewery that caught my attention.

I'll probably come back here on a weekday (when it's less touristy). The air is really fresh here and I haven't had a chance to fully explore the city yet but I think it will always be beautiful in spring and summer - when the weather isn't too cold and you can swim in the lake.
