The Poltava Local Lore Museum, established in 1891 within a former government building, showcases natural history exhibits and local folk art. Situated in the heart of Poltava, this museum offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Visitors can admire the ornate wooden doors and grand first-floor hall with parquet flooring and a massive skylight. The museum boasts an impressive collection of local historical and cultural artifacts.
One of the best attractions in Poltava. I had never wanted to leave the museum: I have found all material exposed particularly interesting, both the oldest and the most recent items. I would have liked to take more pictures too. This museum is absolutely a must if you are visiting Poltava.

Even though the museum is small it is still very good. The only issue was that I was not able to read most of the writing still very good. The staff was friendly and the cost for entrance is cheap. Good review of what Ukraine was and went through.
Nishant R — Google review
In terms of just the building, it's gorgeous inside and outside. The displays are also really good; starting from the geology, flora, and fauna of the area. Then there are the local history areas and modern times. Well worth a visit.

This is the best museum in Ukraine I’ve been so far! The price is cheap but it has a lot of historical stuff! Also it is beautiful!
Serhii L — Google review
WOW! This museum goes on and on! One can not imagine the size and collection! You think you’re almost finished and then you realize there’s another section to see! Keeps going. Really an amazing gem. Would love to take many people there! (The roof is super cool too!)

Fantastic place to learn about the history of Poltava and Ukraine. Everyone was very eager to help explain the interesting history to an English-speaking visitor.
John H — Google review
This is a very beautiful museum - local friends told us to come here and we had a really great time. The building itself is very beautiful from the outside as well as from the inside. Take your time looking at the ornaments on the wooden doors or sitting down for a moment in the large 1st floor hall with parquet flooring and a massive skylight. Also an amazing collection of local history and cultural assets. Entrance fee is 20 UAH/adult. Sometimes, I believe, on Monday (first of the month?) the entrance is even free.
Mike P — Google review
Unreal place. Been visiting it regularly since early childhood. The expositions are detailed and rare, has a lot of work and love put into it. Even building architecture is amazing. Whether you are local or a tourist, this is one place you shouldn't skip. Highly recommend.

The Museum of the History of the Poltava Battle is a captivating destination that commemorates a pivotal moment in history—the Battle of Poltava, fought on June 27, 1709. Located about 5 kilometers from the city center, this museum offers visitors an insightful glimpse into the conflict between the Swedish and Russian Empires that ultimately marked the decline of Swedish power.
It was a very sombering feeling that came over me while I was standing on the battlefield 312 years after the battle. I was there in the same weather as all those men that fought and died there in that field. 32 degrees of heat snd clear skies. I can just imagine how it must have smelled of gunpowder and death that day

Authentic place, not very crowded. Church is not dripping with gold as many other orthodox churches, nice and cozy atmosphere. Takes ±30 minutes to see everything except museum. Miseum is 20-40 minutes depending on whether you want a guided tour.

Poltava Art Museum, located in Poltava, Ukraine, is a public art gallery featuring a diverse collection of classic and contemporary works. The museum's rich ethnographic series includes both local and international artwork.
I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of works presented at Poltava'a art museum. Their collection is exquisite, comprised of paintings, pottery, textiles, furniture and sculptures. The exhibition is constantly updated with new pieces and there is also usually some kind of show of contemporary works. This place is definitely worth a visit. By the way, photos are not allowed.

Involved Staff, Great Little Collection -- The staff at all corners -- one in every room, it seemed -- were wonderful to me, as if I were their only guest that day, and even though I didn't have much time, and even with some language issues, they were accommodating, not intrusive but helpful, chuckling with me about the distance I'd come to see their museum of beautiful art, with several hidden gems of portraits and landscapes.

(Translated by Google) Finally we got to this estate, because it always turned out that when we were in this area, it was closed. We visited with the children of friends, we did not take a tour, since the children are very small and there was no point, so next time, when I will be with my husband, we will definitely take a tour to listen to the history of this estate... Entrance ticket - 30 UAH. Concessional ticket - 15 UAH. Excursion - 150 UAH. It was interesting to walk around this place and see the everyday life... There are a lot of flowers around - mallows, marigolds... Also a well of wishes - threw a penny and made a wish... Walking around the territory, I remembered my grandmother's village, a hut, memories, atmosphere... Being in Poltava, be sure to visit this place!

(Translated by Google) If I could give it 10, I would. Very atmospheric, it makes my soul sing. We didn't take the tour, we only bought an entrance ticket for self-guided sightseeing for 30 UAH (it's time to raise the price, 30 UAH is not money, but buildings need to be maintained). Flowers, mallows, sunflowers, marigolds - our native, authentic, are planted throughout the territory. Others would not fit into the general concept. In short, we liked everything very much, there's nothing to fuss about!

It’s true that there are trash bins only on the side of the park where the playground is located, there are also benches there, on the side that behind the school there are no bins and benches and probably there never were, but it really wouldn’t hurt, I think there would be less garbage, since young people often gather in this place (Original) Located in the heart of Poltava, the Poltava Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and aviation lovers. It offers a unique opportunity to explore long-range bombers, including the impressive Tu-160, which can only be visited here. The museum showcases former military aircraft and allows visitors to enter four planes. Guided tours are available, providing fascinating insights into the history of Poltava airport during World War II.
Nice place. There are two unique aircrafts - intercontinental bombers (not available in other museums in Ukraine), except other specimens of aircrafts, which are available for viewing. 4 planes are available to enter insede. Photos permitted. But you should navigate to Засядька, 1, Poltava, Poltavska oblast - there is the main entance with the box office. If you just find the place in maps and then navigate, you'll arrive to a very wrong gate by the dirt road - the territory is huge, its an acting military aircraft base, where the museum is placed.

One of the most underrated museums in the city. The Museum of Heavy Bomber Aviation is a museum of aviation equipment located in Poltava on the territory of the former air base "Poltava-4". Prior to 2004, the 13th Guards Dnepropetrovsk-Budapest Heavy Bomber Air Division was based at the airbase. According to the Ukrainian-American Agreement on the Elimination of Strategic Nuclear Weapons, in February 2006 the last Tu-22M3 bomber of the Ukrainian Air Force was destroyed at the Poltava military airfield. For the museum exposition, 2 bombers were retained, several more were brought from other cities. In 2007, on the territory of the former air base, a museum was created thanks to the enthusiasm of former military pilots. As of January 2014, the air museum exposition consists of 9 aircraft, air cruise missiles (KSR-2, KSR-5, X-22) and aircraft bombs weighing from 100 to 9000 kg. Aircraft Strategic planes - rocket launcher Tu-160 (according to NATO codes: Blackjack - Dubina) is a nuclear weapon carrier. The most powerful airplane in the world. During the celebration, the following US Air Force aircraft were represented: ll Douglas KC-10A Extender, Boeing B-52H Stratofortress and B-1B Lancer. Operation Frantic was a series of seven shuttle bombing operations during World War II conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain and Southern Italy which then landed at three Soviet airfields in Ukraine. The operation began in June, 1944 and ended in September. After meeting with Stalin on 2 February 1944, Harriman radioed back that "Stalin approves project limited to 200 bombers and six airfields." In the end only three bases were set up. In haste, the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe established a headquarters detachment at Poltava Airfield, in Poltava region in the Ukrainian SSR in late April, 1944. Poltava was designated as USAAF Station 559 for security purposes and was thus referred to in all messages and written correspondence. Poltava was one of three Ukrainian installations operated by Headquarters, Eastern Command USAAF. The others were Pyriatyn Airfield (AAF-560) and Myrhorod Airfield (AAF-561). All three bases were situated along the Kharkov-Kiev railway and were already far behind the front. Poltava and Mirgorod were to be used by heavy bombers (B-24 Liberators, B-17 Flying Fortresses), while Piriatyn would be used for long-range escort fighters (P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings).

(Translated by Google) Soon after the Battle of Poltava, to commemorate the victory, Peter I issued a decree on the construction of the Peter and Paul Monastery on the field of the Battle of Poltava with a lower church in honor of Sampson the Host (since the battle took place on June 27, the day of St. Sampson). Despite the order of Peter I on the urgency of the construction of the monastery and monument, as well as the allocation of funds for construction, the matter moved very slowly. In 1840, at the suggestion of Governor General Count Stroganov, a competition of designs for the construction of the church was held. Among the presented projects, preference was given to the project of the architect J.-J. (Joseph Ivanovich) Charlemagne (1782-1861). The foundation of the church was laid on June 27, 1852. Its construction, which was carried out under the supervision of local architect Khoruzhenko, was completed in 1856. The church, built on the model of Old Slavonic Byzantine churches, was consecrated on July 15, 1856.

The Church of the Savior in Poltava is a fascinating architectural gem that beautifully encapsulates history and artistry. Dating back to 1706, this remarkable structure features a wooden church enveloped by a brick casing built in 1845, creating an intriguing nesting doll effect. The church's unique design includes two bell towers: one constructed in the early 2000s that diverges from the original style, and another resembling the original but situated elsewhere due to historical changes.
Church of the Savior is the oldest architectural monument of national importance in Poltava. Also it is the first successful project of the so-called “museuification” of the house of worship – the wooden churn was covered by a stone case. Having entered the Church of the Savior in Poltava you are immediately run into a kind of corridor of time and appears in ХVІІІ and ХІХ centuries! The Church built from oak beams begat to destroy. In 1837 Alexander ІІ visited Poltava and saw the old roof of the Church and its walls covered with moss. After that the emperor heritor initiated opening of charitable subscription in order to preserve the Church by raising the finances for construction of stone case over the wooden Church. This initiative allowed to get 25 000 Rubles in silver. In 1845 the architect A. Ton implemented the preservation project. Since that time and till present the wooden Church is covered with its stone copy (height – 13.5 m, length – 21 m). Between the Church and its stone copy there is a space of 50 cm – 1 meter. The iconostasis of the beginning of ХVІІІ century also was renewed at that time. Two-level stone bell tower built in 1847 was located near the Church. In 30s of ХХ century this bell tower was also demounted like a stone fence around the Church. New bell tower was built in 2005 on the foundation of the old one. The new tower has three bells molded of red copper and stannum alloy. Two bells have the weight of 45 kg each and one – 75 kg.

Cathedral
Nestled in the heart of Poltava, the Assumption Cathedral stands as a stunning testament to the city's rich religious heritage and architectural beauty. This magnificent structure, alongside the Holy Cross Exaltation Monastery, embodies both historical significance and cultural continuity. While its interior may be relatively simple with an ongoing iconostasis construction and predominantly white walls, it radiates a serene spiritual atmosphere. The bell tower also features an impressive iconostasis that adds to its charm.
The church itself doesn't have much going on inside, but you can see the iconostasis being built but by bit. The rest of the interior is white. There is also an iconostasis in the bell tower.

The Botanical Garden of Poltava National Pedagogical University offers a beautiful and hilly landscape, making it ideal for a leisurely walk. The garden features a greenhouse with an entrance fee and various plant species to admire. Despite some maintenance issues, such as the lack of resting areas and garbage cans, the garden showcases its beauty throughout the year. Visitors can explore diverse flora including palm trees, cacti, and ficuses in the winter garden.

(Translated by Google) Several hectares of rural landscape in the middle of the city. Quiet and peaceful place. It is definitely pleasing that the entrance (except for the greenhouses) is free. The design of some parts of the garden is pleasantly surprising. However, it needs investments and improvements. I recommend visiting if you are in town.

(Translated by Google) The park itself is very cozy and atmospheric, although it is small - you can walk around it in 5 minutes. Many flowers, a couple of cherry trees, saw one gazebo) Entrance to the greenhouse is paid - UAH 30. It may not be easy to get there - sometimes it is booked for a photo shoot, sometimes for a school excursion. In my opinion, UAH 30 is too much. One bush was blooming, everything else was in a rather neglected state. Maybe I was unlucky, because in the photo in other reviews, the situation is much better. Maybe more plants bloom in summer. It is extremely stuffy in the greenhouse, I wanted to get out into the fresh air as soon as possible. Also from the minuses - employees, mostly women with a scoop mentality, who start being rude as soon as something is wrong with them. The ticket is not given after payment. August 2024 Update: Greenhouse closed; the surrounding area is overgrown, no one takes much care of it, there were only three visitors at the time of my visit. There are small houses in front of the greenhouse, in front of one of them someone hung out his underwear to dry.

(Translated by Google) The Poltava monument to Taras Shevchenko is located in Petrovsky Park (or as it is also called "Sunny" Park), opposite the Poltava Museum of Local History, built by the outstanding Ukrainian sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze in the constructivist style. The monument was opened on March 12, 1926. On this occasion, a rally of residents of Poltava, surrounding villages and guests from other cities took place at the opening. When the blanket fell, the well-known melody of the composer Gordiy Hladky poured in and a choir of several thousand sang T.G. Shevchenko's "Testament". The significance of the figure of T. Shevchenko for Poltava is invaluable, so the master was respected in the spiritual capital. The monument was built from reinforced concrete according to the project of I. P. Kavaleridze. The shape of the monument was influenced by the artistic principles of constructivism. Thus, the pedestal is presented as an asymmetric accumulation of planes and volumes, from which the figure of the poet appears. Strict laconism, generalized forms of the monument create the image of a fighter for the will and social justice of the Ukrainian people. The height of the figure of T. G. Shevchenko is 1.8 m, the height of the pedestal is 3.2 m.

2018. Many years ago Poltava was a beautiful city, but unfortunately, in recent years or even decades, like many other cities in Ukraine, it has suffered from noticeable decay and neglect. Even at the heart of the city you will see broken roads and dilapidated buildings are quite common. However, there are still enjoyable experiences to be had. Visitors can take pleasant walks through the parks, savor the offerings of some restaurants, and enjoy breathtaking views from Ivanova Gora. Despite its current state Poltava still manages to exude the authentic spirit of Ukraine. The city holds unique charm that reflects the history and culture of this region. While the neglect is evident, there is an undeniable allure in experiencing a place with such a strong connection to the country's heritage. I encourage you to visit Poltava, not only to witness its historical significance but also to see how resilient and steadfast the Ukrainian spirit can be. By exploring its streets and interacting with its people, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the nation's character. Poltava is a destination well worth visiting.

Korpusny park - Alexandrian Garden The central point of the city is the round Alexandrian (Corpusny) garden. It is the favourite resting-place of Poltavites. It was created by the plan developed in the days of the governorgeneral Prince Alex Kurakin. For a long time Poltava Petrovskiy cadet corps had cared of the park. That is why it was named Corpusny. This name has preserved up to our days. Once there was an ordinary suburban waste ground. When the city began to expand the eight main ways was stretched to the monastery, to the churches, to other places like rays. The square was begun to build in 1802. In 1840 the park was laid out around the Monument of Glory. In 1909 the park was opened officially in honor of the 200th anniversary of the celebration of Poltava battle. Since 1964 the Corpusny park has been sight of the landscape architecture. The park has a round form and the eight radial avenues. There are about 70 species of trees and bushes, the flowerbeds are laid out. There area is 6 hectares. The brass band plays in the park at weekends. The monument of Glory is an 11м cast-iron column. It has two meters in diameter at the base. There are three chaplets from laurel, oak and palm leaves. They symbolize a sadness after lost and grandeur of victory. The column is set on the pedestal from polished labradorit. 18 castiron cannons are put out of granite pedestal. The gilded bronze eagle with a laurel wreath in its beak crowns the monument (the wing span is about 3 m). The total value of the monument was over 150 thousands of rub.The overall height is about 17 м. The monument locks the prospect of eight streets of the city and creats an accomplished ansemble. This place is one of the favourite places for citizens.

The "Monument to the Swedes from the Swedes" stands as a poignant tribute near Poltava, specifically in Pobyvanka, commemorating the Swedish soldiers who lost their lives during the historic Battle of Poltava in 1709. Initiated by Major Klaus Grill's call for remembrance in 1890, this monument was finally erected in 1909. Despite its significance, it seems to have faded into obscurity over time, with local authorities neglecting its upkeep.
If you are a Swede visiting Poltava this is a MUST for you

(Translated by Google) Until a cross is placed over the grave of the last fallen warrior, the war cannot be considered over! Major Klaus Grill spent several years in contract service in the Russian army, often visiting Poltava and the field of the Poltava Battle. In 1890, he published an article in one of the central newspapers calling for funds to be raised for a monument that was proposed to be installed on the field of the Poltava Battle. Despite the fact that this idea was supported by the then King of Sweden Oscar II, it literally split society, causing heated discussion in the press. While some considered the construction of the monument a shameful admission of defeat, others appealed to Christian virtue. In 1902, the famous sculptor Theodor Lundberg offered the public his design for a monument, which was made in the form of a grieving mother covering the body of her murdered son with a flag with a broken sword in her hand. The final decision made in 1904 was that the monument, designed by T. Lundberg, should be opened in Stockholm in front of the facade of the Museum of the History of the Swedish Army, where it is still located, and that a more modest monument should be ordered for installation on the field of the Battle of Poltava. For money collected throughout the country in the amount of 5,000 crowns, a large granite stone (6 m high, 20 tons weight) was ordered from the Vaneviks quarry (Småland). On both sides of the monument there was an inscription carved in Russian and Swedish: “In memory of the Swedes who fell here on June 27, 1909, this stone was erected by compatriots in 1909” and “Åt minne af svenskar, fallne här 1709 reste landsmän denna sten 1909” Swedish businessman Emmanuel Nobel (nephew of Alfred Nobel), who at that time was developing the oil fields of the Caspian Sea, paid for the delivery of the monument by sea to Riga and then by rail to Poltava, as well as all work on its installation. The monument was opened on June 2, 1909 near the village of Pobyvanka, not far from the northern border of the Poltava Battlefield, without any ceremony. The Stockholm News newspaper published a short article about this event in its issue of July 7, 1909.

There weren’t many animals in the zoo at the time of the visit, but admission was absolutely free!!! For both adults and children! Pet food on sale. At the entrance, we were greeted by a peacock, fluffing his beautiful tail. Of course, I really liked the ostriches! You can pet them and feed them. Well, the best part is that you can buy ostrich eggs. It’s probably not worth traveling specifically from another city, especially if you live far away, but if you live in Poltava or are driving past, then both adults and children will get a lot of pleasure from communicating with the inhabitants of Grandma’s Yard! I recommend it for a pleasant time! Ticket prices are the same as in other museums of the city - 20 for an adult, 10 for a child or student, concessionary free, photo in the museum 15 UAH, photo outside free, excursion 60 UAH. Even without a tour, we were briefly told about interesting points. Zoo
Ekopark Kovalivka is a captivating place that offers a close-to-nature experience while ensuring safety. The park boasts a wide variety of animals and continues to expand, promising visitors something new and exciting with each visit. It's highly recommended for families, offering unforgettable experiences, especially in the contact zone with alpacas and goats. Despite its smaller size compared to other parks, ongoing reconstruction work is enhancing the aviaries and overall territory.
Nice place to visit with kids. There you can find around 50 different kind of birds, more then 10 lamas, 🐫, tigers and even kangaroo. Unfortunately almost all of them are trapped in cages. 2 guard dogs didn't even have water in their bowls

Just a great place. It's not as big as Feldman park in Kharkiv in the way of wildlife variety but you can get main idea of such places connection with wild life. Chance to feed goats and lamas is just priceless, they surround you to get a piece of fruit from your hands. I wish they could organize small cafeteria to order soup, salad for a luncheon, though you can get a hot dog or an ice cream. Lovely place indeed, strongly recommended for a visit at least once, price of 2$ for an adult is just rediculous.

It was awesome, great job done by everyone there. And the best part about the place that it is still under construction, development and you can clearly see that there is a huge potential. Kids will be happy and parents excited, definitely new place to come and see, to feel natural and come back one more time. Take there whole your family because even your grandparents will find joy and fun!!!

Very interesting place. Large territory and variety of animals and birds, including exotic ones. There's open lawn with goats, sheep and lamas where you can feed them, touch them, play with them. Some animals can be fed (food is sold in the park), some animals can be visited inside their cages (for additional charge). There's a small train service on the territory. The road to the park is quite bad though. Same with food service - mainly ice cream and drinks are available on site. Restrooms are outside, country style ;)

(Translated by Google) Very large territory, there is a place to walk, feed the animals and look at them, a lot of hard work has been done to make sure everything is as it should be for the animals. Children really like watching animals that they had previously only seen on TV, there is a comfortable cafe where you have to be careful with the price tags on the poster and the receipt because there were differences that we had to argue about, but thanks to the staff they heard me and compensated the difference. Overall, a very great place for a family, I recommend it to everyone, we came from the Dnipro region and did not regret it.

(Translated by Google) Ecopark "Kovalyvka" is a place with great potential We visited the ecopark "Kovalyvka" near Poltava - it is an ornithological park. Animals that have suffered from shelling, are sick or injured are brought here. They are treated, cared for and, if possible, returned to the wild. The park impressed with the variety of birds - they make up about 70% of all residents. I especially liked the capybaras — cute and very interesting animals. There is a contact zone, which also added positive impressions. The condition of the park is ambiguous: the open enclosures look well-kept, but the closed ones have an unpleasant smell and visible mice. Maybe we got there during renovations, because construction is going on almost everywhere. It is difficult to get to the ecopark by public transport - better with your own car or, like us, with an excursion. All in all, it's a good place to hang out for the day. If there is development, the park has a chance to become a unique natural location in Ukraine.

(Translated by Google) Really cool place. Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done on landscaping and equipment, but the potential is huge - a large territory, a caring team and good interest from visitors. There is room to grow, but for now there is something to show. A good collection of birds, mammals, cats, goats, ungulates and even camels. There are many visitors on weekends.

Versal offers a delightful dining experience with its delectable cuisine and inviting ambiance, making it a top choice for visitors. It is known for being the best in its vicinity, attracting patrons who appreciate great food and a pleasant atmosphere. While some may find the music loud and detect cigarette odors, others enjoy the venue as a spot to catch sporting events. The establishment also prides itself on providing good service, although there are mixed reviews about this aspect.
Great tasting food and atmosphere.i was there every evening while on holiday. The best in the area.

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful monument with enormous energy of memories and pleasant moments. This is one of the iconic places in the city, not only in historical terms, but also in terms of memories regarding signs and photographs. Many people born in the USSR have childhood photographs near this monument (I am also one of these people). Pleasant childhood memories that are associated with the Victory Amusement Park, if anyone saw an airplane, it all evokes indescribable emotions experienced in childhood. The only thing I would like to change is the park that goes from the monument to the construction institute, I hope that in the near future everything will change and the park will be no worse than the monument itself.
