The Tarka Trail is a picturesque route that provides unspoiled views of the surrounding countryside, making it perfect for leisurely walks and cycling. The southern loop boasts the UK's longest off-road cycle path, ideal for those seeking an adrenaline-pumping adventure. Meanwhile, the northern loop features stunning coastal tracks. Visitors can pack a picnic and embark on a unique exploration of this breathtaking section of the southwest.
Great bike/walking trail. Flat so easy as I am over 65 with health issues. Beautiful places to stop on the way. To Braunstone from Bideford
Heather S — Google review
Great place for walk, so beautiful and peaceful, nice cafes for pitstops as well good access for wheelchair and mobility scooters at the Puffing Billy cafe. Highly recommend for tea coffee and cakes or snacks good menu and fair prices
Del W — Google review
A scenic easy trail for walking and cycling. Most of the trail is paved with benches along the way. A nice lunch spot in an old railway station is a nice reward.
Fearocious — Google review
Really lovely walking spot, flat so good for kids, cycling and running
Roxy R — Google review
Such a great idea to make an old railway line into a walking & cycling route. So many historic things to see. The Puffing Billy Café is a good place to stop & eat. Very easy peddling as it's reasonably flat. Lot's of bridges and a tunnel to look out for. Highly recommended
Ian B — Google review
Unspoilt natural beauty for miles and miles. With so much of our stunning land being destroyed by developers, the Tarka trail is an absolute blessing and privilege to explore. Every step of this trail offers scenes of tranquility and outstanding beauty. For those nature/bug/foraging/history enthusiasts amongst you, this trail is hard to beat. A MUST for those who love nature.
Freasa B — Google review
Good fun with the family. Some nice views along the way and a couple of places to stop for lunch. We did a round trip of 12 miles which was enough for a family with the youngest being 7 years old. The route is flat which definitely helped! Would recommend to spend 3-4 hours of your day.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in a charming brick and stone building dating back to 1872, the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon is a delightful destination for history enthusiasts. Since its inception in 1888, this small yet captivating museum has been dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Barnstaple and its surrounding areas. Visitors can explore an impressive collection that includes ancient pottery, nature exhibits, and historical artifacts that tell the story of local life through the ages.
Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon features a wide variety of collections covering all the aspects of the old good days. It’s always lovely to trip down memory lane and be grateful what our predecessors have done for us. Having finished the tour, zipping a cup of coffee and enjoy a slice of Victorian sponge cake in its Victorian style tea room is definitely a plus. Despite the museum is totally free, I would strongly recommend a donation to help its maintenance.
Tak F — Google review
A decent local museum with some interesting exhibits about the history of Barnstaple and North Devon. It's well-organized and informative, but not particularly large. It's worth a one-time visit if you're in the area, but not a must-see attraction. The staff are really nice and welcoming, which adds to the experience. Free entry is a bonus!
Anamika J — Google review
Fantastic free museum. Lots to see and mostly very well presented. My granddaughter was fascinated by the taxidermy section and was looking for all the creatures listed. She also liked looking through the folders containing the family name histories. Some sections could have more, or even some, information about the items.
Jason — Google review
Beautiful building and in front of a square that reminds me a bit of Spain with a lovely fountain - very cool tractors outside the museum - a lot of effort has gone into it and it shows and is a really nice centrepiece to Barnstaple
Mary S — Google review
Great place and it’s free. Super friendly staff that gives out very good information about the place. Definitely a place to visit
Mel C — Google review
An excellent local museum with a permanent exhibition of around 80,000 objects in collections and displays about the people and the area of North Devon, including archaeology, natural, and social history. Additional temporary exhibitions also run throughout the year. Both adults and children will find this museum interesting, so well worth a visit. It's free and is open Monday to Saturday inclusive 10:00 am - 5:00 pm in summer (Different hours in winter)
Andrew D — Google review
Visited on a whim but glad we did. Lots of interesting local historical memorabilia. Accessible and well looked after museum. Free to enter and friendly volunteers on entry and knowledgeable volunteer in railway room. Great location too😊
CAROLINE D — Google review
It's free to enter. I came across this museum by accident near the estuary. The lady at the entrance was so lovely and allowed us in with our support Yorkie. The museum was fascinating with something for all ages and I loved exploring the variety in each room. Brilliant place lovely staff and just a credit to Barnstaple. Excellent 5*

Market
Barnstaple Pannier Market, also known as the historic Pannier Market, has a rich history dating back over 1,000 years. Originally established in the 1800s to provide a designated site for market traders, it was named after the large baskets called panniers that farmers' wives and daughters used to carry their produce of vegetables and dairy products. Today, this iconic market hosts a variety of events including regular markets featuring local produce and street food.
Great refurbishment. Visited on a Tuesday but unfortunately not many stalls open. Am told it’s usually much busier on a Friday. I can imagine when all the businesses are open it would be very attractive
David B — Google review
Great market so many different stalls for everyone young and old. Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm! It's the perfect opportunity to support your local traders 👌
Tyron O — Google review
Built in the 1800s. Has just had a face-lift. Half the space is for local business's and have is a space to sit and relax. The toilets are brand new and always super clean.
Gavin C — Google review
Lots to see and do around the market. Street art featuring drunken, swearing and unconscious middle-aged men always fills one with joy.
Russell D — Google review
Always pleased to see this market keeps going. It’s a lot smaller than it used to be, but there’s still some interesting stalls.
Dan P — Google review
We took the chance to stroll through this market hall earlier in July - a Thursday. I was quite surprised to see that it was quite empty with only half the space occupied with stalls. Most, if not all of these were selling bric a brac of one kind or another. I recall the large stall selling jig saw puzzles and others selling textiles, cheap electronic goods etc. I had hoped to see some fruit and vegetable stores and the odd meat stall but no... Never mind. The old building itself is impressive and worth taking a look at.
Ian K — Google review
A very cute local market with local stall holders and nice prices

Really nice Theatre. Great location. Only issues were waiting too long for the toilet and getting a Drink during the interval.
Gregory ( — Google review
Wonderful little theatre with really friendly and helpful staff. I have been here many times, always looking out for new shows to go and watch! You always get a great view with it being a smaller venue!
Kirsty M — Google review
We went to see "A Fairytale for Christmas" in the evening of 14th November, this show had the potential of being very enjoyable but for the fact that the sound quality was so loud that the music distorted all the vocals and made the songs unintelligable. This made for a very disappointing evening, which was a shame when the dance troop put on a good performance. Was this a theatre sound issue or a problem created by the production company.
Roy G — Google review
Went along to see the ukpink floyd experience. Very good show, very friendly staff. Great to listen to these wonderful songs live once again
Derek G — Google review
Great modern theatre ,comfortable seating , bar reasonably priced .
Michelle B — Google review
Enjoyed it since I was a child, customer service was great, amazing acting, apart from one time where they went through the show time too quickly and had to use up the last 30 minutes doing a baby show in the christmas 2022 one
Leo J — Google review
Before I write this, know I love my local theatre. I don't go as much as I like but when I have it's usually been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Tonight's show unfortunately, wasn't that. My friend who recommended the show as something to do, I was happy to join as I love a good panto and when seeing it was adult oriented, even more so. The poster for this show gave the impression of panto level production value, sets, costumes etc as you would expect in a panto. This had nothing of the sort. This show consisted of a stage with four basic chairs, one which had a 'performer' sat upon. Next to this was a a table holding a stack of cue cards for the audience, which I am aware was part of the act. When the show began, I expected there to be some gag explaining the lack of any theatrical ambiance ie sets, costumes and sound effects. This act was just four people reading from a script some risqué jokes. Now while I'm sure this was the intended effect and part of a joke, I feel this should have been disclosed before hand as some am dram performance as that is pretty much all it was. None of the act seemed overly confident in their abilities albeit the main man who did try to brighten up the show with a costume that didn't really make any sense to the aesthetic of the show. The advert for this show gave the impression it was like any other panto but directed for adults you expect. Half the audience left at the interval never to return so I'm sure their feelings are mutual here. The production claiming they had sold out shows at other venues can only be because they're one night only. I very much doubt these would sell out a second night. An overly poor experience. I've paid £5 more to see warm up acts for world star comedians but at least you know what you're in for as they clearly advertise they're warm ups for upcoming shows. This was a complete mislead and I would highly advise any theatre company hosting acts like these to either refuse of make it abundantly clear what the audience should expect. Aladdin, a family show would have been better as even they throw in a few adult centred jokes and the whole show is an absolute blast.

My wife took one of my daughters to see Phantom 2 filmed stage show recently as they had seen the first phantom on stage years ago. Thirty five of his majestys pounds it cost. Imagine our surprise when finding out it can be rented for £3.99 on You Tube 👀 Not such a special event , more like a rip off

Scott Cinemas in Barnstaple is a 1930s cinema with a bar and four modern screens that showcase the latest releases and live theatre broadcasts. The cinema has retained its historical charm, offering a unique experience for moviegoers. Visitors praise the comfortable seating, friendly staff, and overall cleanliness of the venue. Some patrons even refer to it as their 'film club,' where they enjoy watching a variety of films in a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere.
Firstly...I got my dates wrong. Should have been on a Tuesday, I thought it was on a Wednesday. Anyway it was sorted for me very kindly over the phone. On arrival at Scott's there was friendly happy people. We were even shown to our seats. I commented how warm screen 3 was. The young man said that he would get the heat reduced...and he did!!! So we settled into our comfy seats & the movie (one battle after another) and really enjoyed it. A pleasant experience and money well spent. Thank you Scott's. And....BTW...the loos were spotless!!!
Linda D — Google review
Nice little theater that we were easily able to buy tickets from online and then self print once inside. Cinemas are small but nicely adorned and the screens in great condition. Raked seating would be better as it is tough to see if someone tall in front of you and the halls are very warm. Need some better ventilation I'd say. Prices are pretty high for the experience as well.
Nicholas C — Google review
We went to the Scott Cinema in Barnstaple to see Bad Guys 2 with our grandsons on Thursday pm. The staff were great - very friendly and helpful, a credit to the cinema. My wife said it was one of the best cinemas she'd ever been to - comfort, layout and 'plushness'. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Andy Scard
Andy S — Google review
Visited while on holiday. Super friendly staff on arrival. Great selection of drinks and nibbles. Shown to our seats. Great screen quality with a sharp picture and good quality sound. Comfy seats with loads of legroom and good view. AND tickets were almost half the price of our local chain cinemas for the same film. Thoroughly enjoyed our film experience and would highly recommend.
Anne E — Google review
Absolutely fabulous staff on being welcomed to the cinema. Everything went to plan on the timings. Excellent who did her job well. Definitely, recommend to everyone to attend Scott’s Cinema Barnstaple forward to my next visit soon
Amanda H — Google review
Just returned from seeing Downton Abbey the finale, cinema was packed with most comfortable seats. Only criticism was there were no staff members checking tickets or able to guide you to the correct row your seats were allocated, as this was not marked anywhere. Also as you entered screen 4 it was very dark and not at all suitable for elderly people trying to find their seat. Despite the above the film was most enjoyable.
Wendy E — Google review
I am in Devon on holiday and really enjoyed going to this cinema. The whole cinema was brilliant, nice and clean a good size screen with comfortable seating not obscured by the person in front. And very reasonable seat prices. I would not hesitate to visit this cinema again
Ron H — Google review
The staff and rooms were great. The cinema experience was ruined as we couldn't afford the snacks. I realise it's only snacks but wanted to give my partner and older kids the experience. Lower the prices of snacks they no need to be that expensive

Bowling alley
Lets Go is a versatile entertainment center located in Barnstaple, offering various indoor activities for all ages. The facility features 10-pin bowling, karaoke, an indoor ice skating rink, and laser quest. Additionally, it provides a space for hosting events such as Christmas parties and kids' birthday parties with tailored packages including food and drinks. The venue's convenient location and ample parking make it easily accessible.
We had a wonderful time for my son's birthday at Let's Go. The kids had plenty of fun in the party bus and grown ups could join in if they wanted to or they could chill out in the sitting area outside. This was followed by an hour in the party room, which was beautifully decorated, with plenty of fun things to do. There was karaoke, Nintendo, party games and delicious food. The cake was personalised and cute party bags given to all the kids. My son even got a hand written Happy Birthday card from the staff, which was so thoughtful and caring. The staff were responsive and helpful. The whole place looked like lots of fun and I'm sure would make a perfect birthday spot for older children too. Thank you for making my son's birthday so special.
Marta L — Google review
We recently celebrated my child’s birthday at Let’s Go Bowling, and overall, it was a fun and memorable experience for the kids and parents alike. The bowling was a hit with the kids, keeping them entertained for a good amount of time. The party package included kid-friendly snacks , fries, and drinks. The food was served hot and on time. While the kids loved it, the menu options were pretty basic—great for young kids but limited for adults. The staff was polite, organized, and handled everything from setting up the party area. They kept things running smoothly and were quick to assist whenever needed. The kids received small goodie bags at the end, which was a nice touch.
Shyni S — Google review
Pretty much every shot we bowled we had to wait for someone to come and repair the pins/machine.. if they didn’t have to repair the machine then the pins were randomly falling down! Balls kept getting stuck down the lane and there are only 3 staff operating, so on busy periods you’re having to wait 5/10 minutes for someone to come and assist you. Used to love it there, wouldn’t recommend now.
William E — Google review
Excellent retirement party :) Staff very friendly and accommodating. Booking a large group was made very easy. Was unsure exactly how many people wanted to go at first but Let’s Go email communication was really good and I just kept adding and adding more numbers. The 2 games of bowling and drinks offer was really good value for money. Enjoyed by all. Plenty of staff on shift on the night, who were great fun!

Omg. I took my lads here for a game of pool. When Simon Maunder had it, it was the place to go. Clean, cool, good vibes. I don't know where to start? Firstly, the girl staff member was fantastic. Poor thing, seemingly running everything. Friday, 5pm, we were the only people in there. All of the arcade games were switched off. Now here is the thing. 1 Guinness and half a coke. £9.50. The place is dirty, dated and unloved. You will fold if you don't reinvent. The crazy golf is an insult to a 5 year old. Utterly dreadful! Each hole is 6ft of challenging AstroTurf. Come on!!!! Greed and stupidity have totally resulted in your terrible net profit. Staff are great but basically look like they don't want to be there. Sort it out or sell up!!!

Just wanted to thank Jake and his team for doing such a fantastic job for my son’s 7th birthday. The party package was brilliant, included everything you could want for a child’s party - invitations, 1 game of bowling, food which the children could pick, cake, party room which included the Nintendo switch, karaoke and 2 party games and lovely party bags at the end. Jake really took so much care into making sure everything was perfect for my son’s special day with his friends. Thanks again!
Nicola P — Google review
Poor experience on lane 6. Very pricey, nearly £40 for 2 games for 2 people. This would have been about £25 in Taunton, where it's also a much better experience. Nearly impossible to bowl on, My wife only got 17 in the first game, she'd normally score in the 80's we could visibly see the middle of the lane was the top of the hill. The start of the lane slopes to the right and the far end to the left. Also could see the ball bumping up and down. Will not be going again unless we know these things have been updated. Think we should be refunded as we don't live in the area.. Added 22/7/25 Think your reply is totally untrue. Price in Taunton is just under £25 for 2 people for 2 games, we've been there a few times as it's near home and I checked again online before posting my review. Yours was nearly £40. The lane is visibly not flat however much you believe it's maintained correctly.
Stephen B — Google review
Excellent kids party, everything was well planned and organised. The children had a great time thank you. The lanes and party rooms decorated. The staff were friendly and available. Food, cake and party bags were good and other little touches by let's go made the party feel special and like the staff care about every birthday party. I would definitely book here again good value for everything

Air Extreme Trampoline Park offers a carefully planned schedule for safe jumping, making it suitable for all ages. The park provides a jump academy to learn new moves and also allows visitors to play and show off their skills. It's an ideal location for children's birthday parties, with amenities and recreational facilities available. Booking in advance can lead to discounts, and the well-managed park has polite staff who handle noncompliance well.
I attended a session here last Sunday with my three kids. I don't usually leave reviews, but I wanted to say that the duty manager is amazing. I wanted to congratulate her myself before I left on a job well done, but she was busy attending to something. She works constantly, always smiling and ensuring she attends to all customer needs. I watched her supporting her team and filling in where needed. Well done you. You are a credit to the company. You run an excellent facility and lead from the front. I was super impressed that someone so young had such a handle on the operation. I hope they know how lucky they are to have you. I live in Barnstaple and we regularly visit here, the kids love it. The cafe is great for the adults and the staff are attentive and always on hand. Please tell your duty manager her efforts haven't gone unnoticed, I was genuinely impressed by her effort and leadership. I have no connection to the business or manager, but just wanted to say well done to you and your team.

The park features a large children's play area with swings, slides, sandpits, and climbing frames that are sure to keep the little ones entertained. Additionally, there is a flying fox for added excitement.
Love walking around this park my dog loves to see the squirrels, she was born deaf so she is kept on the lead, but gosh she gets excited when she sees one. It's nice when the little coffee place is open we have a lovely hot chocolate from there.

Brilliant park, clean and tidy and well looked after. My only criticism was a young boy was continually kicking a ball really hard against the fencing inside the playground by the seating benches. Perhaps a goal might be the answer outside the play area.

Very much enjoyed Armed Forces Day. Saw the Red Arrows fly past and enjoyed the stalls. I used the toilet although I couldn't find a light. There was an adult outdoor gym which had well oiled moving parts. The children's playground was popular too.

Nestled in a picturesque North Devon valley, Marwood Hill Gardens is a breathtaking 20-acre private garden that promises an enchanting escape into nature. With its serene lakes and vibrant plant life, this hidden gem offers visitors a tranquil experience filled with the soothing sounds of birdsong. Families can delight in interactive activities like treasure trails, where children learn about various plants while enjoying sweet rewards at the quaint tea room.
Really nice place for a visit in the spring. Reasonably priced and nicely set-out gardens. Includes a little tea room overlooking the gardens and lakes. We will revisit this place again during the summer months. My only criticism would be that parking is provided free of cost but a little distance away so less able people may find that a problem but there is a drop-off area close by.

We went to Marwood Hill Gardens near Barnstaple today, what an amazing hill garden in the middle of nowhere. Absolutely stunning, well worth a visit. They also specialise specifically in their plant centre with Astilbe. Home to 4 National Plant Heritage collections and numerous Champion trees, these private valley gardens span over 20 acres. Showcasing three stunning lakes, sculptures, rare trees and shrubs, and colourful surprises throughout each season.

Beautiful garden, sweet cafe tea room and excellent plant sales. This out of the way garden has 4 national plant collections and stunning lakes. Take some time, sit down and feel nature and the wildlife take over. The road to it is narrow but it is worth it.

Wow. Stumbled across this place whilst finding places to visit on a rainy day. It didn’t disappoint. The Astilbe and hydrangeas were so pretty. Very well kept gardens and the tea room was lovely. Dog friendly too

It was a beautiful sunny spring day. The magnolias were beautiful. We enjoyed a delicious cream tea with ginger scones at the garden's tea room.

Beautiful gardens, there is a free carpark about a 5 minute walk from the gardens. You can spend hours walking around the different trails & sitting by the lakes watching the fish and birds. The cafe has indoor & outdoor seating and the food is delicious. If you're really lucky the black bird might join you for some crumbs. You can also buy some of the plants you've seen at the plant store.

Outdoor Activities
Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre, located in North Devon, is a family-oriented zoo with over 200 species. The zoo offers handling experiences and daily talks featuring pumas, marmosets, lemurs, and other animals. Visitors can see a variety of wildlife from around the world including black leopards, spiders, otters, wallabies, lynx, cheetahs and more. The natural-style enclosures provide an up-close experience with the animals.
Great place to see some pretty awesome and rare animals and birds. The only shoebill in the country and she didn't disappoint. The panther, the puma, the cheetahs, all amazing. The wolves and other dogs are just brilliant to see. There was plenty of parking on arrival. The facilities within the park were fine. The wee cafe was OK, the not the greatest , and neither the worst. There was animal handling and informative shows at various points throughout the day. Which were well worth attending. All in all, it was a great day.
Stuart — Google review
We had a brilliant day out at Exmoor Zoo and would highly recommend it to families and visitors of all ages. The range of animals is fantastic, and we were able to see them all during our visit. They all appeared well cared for and happy in their enclosures, which was lovely to see. The zoo is also very inclusive, with excellent accessibility features, including widgets with images to help those with SEND communicate and engage more easily with the experience. This thoughtful touch made the visit even more enjoyable and welcoming. The staff were incredibly friendly, approachable, and always happy to help with any questions. Another highlight was the short nature walk, which takes only around 15 minutes but is very peaceful and definitely worth doing. It’s a great way to enjoy the surroundings beyond the animal enclosures. Overall, Exmoor Zoo offered us a wonderful day out full of memorable experiences, we would definitely return!
Hannah R — Google review
Visited Exmoor Zoo today, even though it rained on and off, a great place to visit. Amazing amount of animals to see, with plenty of room in their enclosures. Well worth a visit, at a reasonable price. Cafe ok, but could do with more of a selection of warm food and cakes(A Chef/Cook would be nice) Overall experience was very good. Nice little gift shop too.
Mark P — Google review
This has to be my favourite zoo. It has a great range of animals which are all easy to see thanks to the enclosure layouts. Everything was clean and tidy and all the animals seemed happy. Normally our children get bored at zoos but not this one, they said they could have watched the Lar Gibbons all day which I agree! Hope to visit again soon!
Patrick T — Google review
This was our first visit to Exmoor Zoo, celebrating our granddaughter second birthday and we absolutely loved it. From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, friendly, and welcoming, which made a great first impression. The café and gift shop were perfectly adequate, with quick service and everything we needed. The toilets and baby changing facilities were clean and well-maintained, which we really appreciated. The zoo grounds are superb. It is clear that a great deal of care and attention goes into the well-being of the animals. The enclosures are spacious and thoughtfully designed to mimic natural environments, and we were pleasantly surprised by how close we could get to many of the animals without disturbing them. The map was clear and easy to follow, and the paths were smooth and well-suited for pushchairs. The play area was also in excellent condition, with plenty of seating nearby for parents to relax while the kids played. Although we did not attend any of the educational talks this time, they were clearly scheduled throughout the day, we will definitely make a point to check them out on our next visit. Having visited other zoos across Devon, I can honestly say that Exmoor Zoo stands out as the best. Well done to the entire team!
MFH S — Google review
Used my tesco vouchers which made it super great value. So many great animals and although really hot weather I think we managed to see all of them. We were expecting to be there a couple of hours as we got there mid afternoon but 3 hrs went by so quickly and you could easily make a whole day of it. Definitely recommend, my 12 yr old love it and my 16 yr old surprisingly really enjoyed it too. Highly recommended for all ages
Debs T — Google review
Visited with my two children who are 7 and 11 while on holiday in Woolacombe. We enjoyed our visit and had a good time. There are lots of animals especially cats. The highlight was the 'exmoor beast' a black leopard who jumped at the glass and thrilled the kids. The cages vary in size and I thought some were a bit small for the animals while others had more room. It is quite a compact zoo and a bit of a maze. There were some interesting informative talks and the zoo keeper were engaging and interesting. There is only a single block of toilets near the entrance and none in the rest of the zoo, so can be a bit of a pain with small kids. There is a reasonable prices cafe with a few lunch items but not high cuisine. All in all well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Dean H — Google review
Lovely zoo some unusual animals all staff we encountered where friendly and knowledgeable definitely worth a visit. I did the Shoebill experience which was awesome again keeper Josh was friendly and really knowledgeable and I had a great experience. Definitely recommend doing an experience. Entry fee to the zoo is extremely reasonable and so was the fee for the experience I will definitely be returning

Nestled in the picturesque North Devon, Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum is a delightful destination that beautifully marries history with nature. This elegant Regency house, once home to the Chichester family for over five centuries, features an inviting interior filled with eclectic collections like seashells and model ships.
Arlington Court and its National Trust Carriage Museum proved to be a wonderful day out, even during a rainy Easter visit. The expansive grounds offered beautiful landscapes to explore despite the wet weather, showcasing the estate's natural charm in all conditions. The Easter-themed activities scattered throughout the property were a highlight, providing entertainment and engagement for our two children at every turn. These thoughtful touches made the experience special and memorable for families. The National Trust Carriage Museum was particularly impressive, offering fascinating historical exhibits while still maintaining child-friendly elements that kept younger visitors interested and involved. The collection of carriages provides a unique glimpse into transportation history that visitors of all ages can appreciate. Facilities throughout were clean, well-maintained, and accessible, making the visit comfortable for all guests. The staff members were predominantly friendly and helpful, enhancing the overall experience with their knowledge and assistance. We took a break in the tea room to enjoy some refreshments, which provided a pleasant respite from our explorations. While the cakes might benefit from a slight improvement in moistness and the pricing could be more aligned with portion sizes, it was still an enjoyable part of our visit. Arlington Court truly shines as a versatile destination that delivers a quality experience regardless of weather conditions. The beauty of the grounds, the educational value of the museum, and the family-friendly atmosphere make it a destination well worth visiting again. Highly recommended for families looking for an engaging day out that combines history, nature, and fun activities.

Beautiful gardens. Really nice tearoom and outside eating area. Volunteers all really knowledgeable and helpful. Really enjoyed the craft demos by two local artists on Saturday 19th July. My main reason for visiting that particular day.

Lovely family day out and as with a lot of National Trust properties lots of activities for the kids included. Archery, circus games, lovely walk down to the lake and back in a big circular route. Lots of food and drink locations and both sandwiches, pasties, sausage rolls and main meals. Carriage museum was very informative and lovely to see.

Great house to visit. Amazing staircase with neo classical pillars. An incredibly well preserved tapestry. Arrived too late for the carriage museum but the walled garden was a great surprise. The apple tunnels were impressive.

What a great discovery! Arlington Court offers a perfect blend of history and nature. The Regency House felt so homely and was full of amazing collections and eccentric treasures left by the last owner, Miss Rosalie Chichester. If you love walking, the estate is brilliant. We took one of the paths through the woodland and parkland, which was so peaceful and expansive. It truly is a beautiful and quiet corner of Devon. Highly recommend stopping for a treat in the tearoom too!
Cholticha K — Google review
Apart from trying to find the place as its all minor roads the walk from the car park took a couple of minutes and there was a nice cafe. The house was in very good condition, the Carriage museum was also quite interesting too, but you were not allowed to touch anything, it would have been nice to have had one you could climb on or sit inside, didn't see all of it, but they put on extra things for the children and the weather was excellent on the day.
John D — Google review
Spent a few hours here last week whilst on holiday in North Devon. It's a really beautiful place to walk and chill. We bought sandwiches and drinks from the cafe and ate them on the grass as they have a problem with wasps this summer... but apart from the cafe area we didn't see any more. We sat by the pond for ages watching the fish and there were birds (not sure if they were House Martens, Swallows or Swifts), swooping down and either drinking or catching insects from the surface. Beautiful flowers in the gardens. The carriage museum is really interesting too. We'd go back again and do longer walks next time too.
Carolyn B — Google review

Stopped for breakfast after hospital visit, really nice breakfast well presented, if a little lukewarm. Except the tomato which hard and inedible. Would come again, but ask them to ensure breakfast was hot and tomato cooked. Staff very pleasant
Pat H — Google review
We come here quite often for food at the excellent cafe, to let our son play in the kids area, visit the farm shop and shop from the main shop, all are excellent, the staff are all very pleasant and friendly. Christmas time is great when they have the train up by the ceiling running around and all the decorations in place. The food in the cafe is great, good selection of cakes too!
Geoff S — Google review
Used to adore this garden centre, but now there is an open plan butchers right by the checkout, with whole animal bodies hanging in plain sight, the smell of blood across the bottom floor/Christmas section and carvers walking throughout the Christmas section to and from. There used to be a lovely food shop, in its own area of the garden centre that sold such lovely diverse foods and snacks. With the smell and views of carcasses, right by the door for all to see, I fear this has put us off the garden centre for good. Such a shame, as it used to be such a welcoming and lovely place for plants, cafe and ornaments.
Katie H — Google review
Drove past on a holiday and can never resist visiting a garden centre! I was so surprised to see how much Christmas Decorations they had and the quality of it! So of course I had to come away with something! This Garden Centre has everything you can think of along with some very unquie items. I will return if I am ever in the area to see what other treasures I could get! The farm shop was also really well stocked with quality foods and had to come away with the finest Devon Blue Cheese I have ever had!
Bob J — Google review
This place used to be the best garden centre, but is totally ruined by the addition of a butchers, which is inexplicably in the same building when it could have just gone in the separate former farm shop. I cannot understand the thought process behind ‘oh I know what would make a nice potter around the garden centre better, the smell of raw meat’. It’s completely overpowering. I also wouldn’t want to be the parent of an older child having to explain why there is an entire dead cow hung up in the window whilst trying to peruse the Christmas lights.
Mollie O — Google review
Been coming here for years, always enjoyed browsing the displays and purchasing goods. This time I was quite upset by the view of carcasses hanging behind huge glass window. Really not pleasant and inappropriate in a place which previously emanated calm and feel good aura. Could be traumatic for children and sensitive adults. Not a good move, sorry.
Anni D — Google review
The 1 star does not reflect on the garden centre and restaurant. I've been coming to St John's and Ashford since both opened. I cannot believe at the lovely Ashford with its amazing views, the smell of raw meat is over powering the whole place. The Christmas display is not a place to linger. Such a shame. The original farm shop complimented. This farm shop does not! Sadly as I sat having coffee this morning, the table next to me said they would be going to St johns site, they intended to speak to someone as they found the smell revolting.. I know from my own friendship circle non of us want to stop coming but non of us would choose to wander around anywhere where the smell of meat was so overbearing. Sorry Ashford. You really have got this wrong.

Easily in the top 5 of soft plays I've been to, and to be sure, I've been to many! Very good softplay. Paid £18 and that was for 2 kids with 2 adults on a Saturday morning. It is very large and was not crowded. The toilets are very clean and the tables wiped down fully between customers. You have to be let in and out by staff too so is very safe. Food is very nice and is reasonably priced.

I was delighted to attend the Pantaloons version of Hamlet at Castle Hill estate yesterday. It was very good and having only just returned to north Devon recently I was delighted to see how spectacular the estate and gardens were looking. It was a very good production which enjoyed every moment and my sister and I were pleased that Lady Arran took the time to discuss the weather with us beforehand. I’m sure it made all the difference, as apart from a light drizzle it was mainly dry. I can highly recommend a trip to the estate and will be back to view the wonderful gardens very soon.

Refuse to compensate me for their IT system breaking and won't respond to any messages. I was given a gift card for the escape rooms, and tried to use it when booking online. However the website did not accept the code so I got in touch where I was happily booked in with the promise of them "looking into it". On the day of the escape room I was forced to pay full price and told that the system had changed and the gift card (still in date) no longer worked. I was also told that I could use the gift card for the other escape room if I wanted. Unfortunately, my workplace ended up booking the second escape room for a work party and I didn't get a chance to use it for their booking as I wasn't aware they'd booked it. Since I had now done both escape rooms and wasn't impressed enough to ever come back, I reached out for a refund for the escape room as I now had no reason to return to the room and their system was at fault. They have not got back to me. Not impressed.

Completed the escape room in about 38 mins. Not very well put together, some elements broken, and no true story or ending. We completed a puzzle to find it was the final puzzle! Not very immersive or interactive - lots of padlocks to open but that’s about it! With other rooms we’ve done the host has taken a photo of us with our completion time. No official time taken and we had our photo taken with our own phone! Sorry I wouldnt recommend.

St Anne's Arts and Community Centre is a charming venue with a lot of character, making it perfect for intimate events like art classes, weddings, and concerts. The building has a lovely atmosphere and is favored for its unique vibe. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with mobility issues due to steps leading to the entrance and steep stairs inside. Despite this, the center offers enjoyable experiences such as art classes with local artists and live music performances in an atmospheric setting.
We celebrated our wedding at St Anne's and it couldn't have been any better! It had a nice vibe about it and loved how it looked, so much nicer than a hotel or barn (in our opinion anyway!). So if you're having a small wedding (we had 40 people there for the day) then it is perfect! Big thanks to Sharon and Joy for all their hard work and help. It was superb!

Great venue in the centre of Barnstaple. Craft show as part of Art Trek North Devon Open Studios full of wonderful homemade arts and crafts

Went see a sell out talk by Chris Lewis , talk excellent , venue excellent . My first visit , but definitely not my last . Great ambience .
Pat L — Google review
Small venue for intimate events. Very atmospheric with candles and subdued lighting for concert I attended. One star deducted for numb inducing chairs but otherwise a delightful setting. Note that because of steps up to entrance, not suitable for those with mobility issues.

This was a very interesting walk and talk by Susan Pengelly from the St Anne's centre around parts of Barnstaple.
Brian R — Google review
Great old listed building, wooded ceiling is the one of the oldest. Community arts operate out of there. Great venue for a "Party".
Sue S — Google review
I have been for a couple of art classes here and I have really enjoyed them. It's a great venue but I can only give it a four star rating as it is not suitable for anyone who is disabled there are steps leading up to the entrance door and very steep narrow stairs leading down to the room where the classes were held and to the toilet. St Anne's is a lovely building with lots of atmosphere.
Mark A — Google review
Lovely old building, 900 years old, steeped in history. Great venue, I went there for basket weaving run by the plough arts centre, which was brilliant. Kitchen area downstairs for refreshments and toilets too. Lovely large grassed area to sit out on too.

The shooting range at The Solid Strike Arena is a fantastic activity that offers great value and an enjoyable time. Despite one target being out of operation, this did not hinder the overall experience as the staff made up for it by allowing extra target games. The employees, particularly Tom, were very kind and friendly. This five-star family experience provides various entertainment options such as snooker, pool, arcades, and bowling in addition to airsoft. The facility is clean and well-maintained.
Booked in a birthday party for my daughter and her friends and they absolutely loved it, splitting their time between the shooting gallery and the gamezone. Owner was hands on for the shooting range to help the girls get the most out of our time there. Absolutely recommend and can't wait to go back.
Trev Y — Google review
My friend and I had a go at the air rifles on a variety of multi and single player games. It was really fun and the owner is very personable and helpful. I’d definitely try this again. The system is very responsive and the guns seem well looked after.

Absolutely brilliant place ! Friendly staff with unlimited knowledge. Top quality equipment maintained to perfection so everything works as it should. Prices are very fair and the experience is worth every penny. The range, the laser tag, the games to play, the nerf arena and the arcade makes this an ultimate place to go, ive witnessed children and adults enjoying every second they are there and I would recommend this place to anyone looking to have endless fun 😁 I bought my own airsoft rifle and have been given great advice on taking care of the rifle and myself while operating it. I genuinely couldn't even make up a bad point if I tried 🙃 thank you to the guys there for making it such an enjoyable experience, ive got my membership and will take full advantage of its perks.

This activity is great for value we hade the best time and had lots of fun on the targets, one target was not operating but this didn't stop us having a good time they made up for this with letting us have extra target games. The staff were very kind and friendly (Tom) We will definitely be coming back again. Would highly recommend! Definitely five star family experience. The killers 4 .

We went to the Chivenor 'arena'. Tricky to find (it's right at the back of the Business Park). We prebooked it as we had friends joining us. The instructor was chatty and helpful and sorted out technical issues as they arose. We started with 'easy' shooting practice and then we did more complex shooting games. It was something different and fun and we didn't feel rushed during our session. Reccomended for adults and teenagers!

Loved it loads to choose from on the Xboxs there's even old games consoles, switch games, vr driving thing so you can fully immerse in the game and other cool things I would fully recommend this for birthday party's or just a chill hang out I had a great time I tried a bit of everything a great price too!

After visiting them at their other summer time site "the big sheep" and being told about solid strike arena we visited today and we weren't disappointed very friendly approachable staff with lots to see and do,we stayed all day. A definite must for a family nerf war 😀 or airsoft shooting competition

Great session. My son and me had the best time. Friendly and helpful staff, especially with my son who has SEN, they were fab with him. Great facilities too. All very clean and ran like clockwork. Great hour of fun. We will be back.
Sarah H — Google review
What an amazing activity! For an hour, it is roughly £14 per person and that is for an hour. It was busy but not to the point where we were queueing. The longest wait for a slide was around 1 minute and it was so much fun for the kids and adults too!!!! There's some lovely food there, changing facilities, benches to sit and view and you can hire a wet suit and socks as well or bring your own! Thanks to Jamie as well, and absolute gentle who made it a blast! He loved the fact we could get down to the end and up onto the landing zone.
Rifat H — Google review
Brilliant idea!!!! Kids (10 and 13) didn’t stop the whole hour session. Sun was shining didn’t have to wait around flowed well. Well manned with staff who were all friendly and enthusiastic. I like the fact had choice equipment to go down the slide on and that my two children could go down together. Did hire the wet suits as was worried they might get cold and not make the most of the full hour but they were not cold at all which was great! Would highly recommend
Sophie C — Google review
Grandchildren enjoyed the slip and slide. It was well organised and safety guidelines were clear. It was really busy and all ages were taking part. The slides were not particularly fast as we imagined.
Tina C — Google review
My daughter had a great time. It was well organised and felt safe and friendly. The cafe van ladies were adorable. The assistant at the top of the slide was super helpful and enthusiastic with my daughter. Recommended! (I wished there was a bit more shade I could have sat under.)

Monster Slip and slide Barnstaple is amazing! Ian and the team made us feel so welcome and looked after. The guys service are so polite, friendly and fun. The kids and adults had a great time. They helped us organise our youth football team session where the lads had so much fun together and all didn’t want it to end. So much in fact that a group of us went back again today to do it all over again! Make sure you pay a visit to Ria and the team in the coffee shack! Polite and friendly service with a hot coffee or hot chocolate which went down a treat 👌

Popped up on my boys 12th birthday, with my 3 children, and we all loved it! Great fun. Professionally run, well staffed, good facilities for food, changing, and toilets. A really nice new attraction on N.Devon. 10/10.

This was setup in a large field and great place to go with family. They have portable changing rooms and plenty of benches to sit and watch. They also have a fabtastic little portable cafe for snacks and drinks. The toilets are those portable little units you get.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
RSPB Isley Marsh is a nature preserve located on the Taw & Torridge estuary, offering public footpaths with views of the estuary and birds. It's a haven for ducks like teal and waders such as curlew, greenshank, and dunlin. The area is perfect for bird watching and dog walking, with opportunities to spot spoonbills, osprey, and other wildlife.
Islay marsh, great for bird spotting including the spoonbills. Great that you can again park at Yelland Quay, walk up the Tarka trail to Islay Marsh. The Tarka trail is always a delight.
Deborah W — Google review
Unfortunately can not do a true report on this reserve as it was freezing cold and blowing a gale . But from what I saw it's probably a lovely place for a nice walk with some great wildlife. We did enjoy the walk and got to see a few things . On the down side place took some finding as ended up parking in a layby
David T — Google review
Really soothing place to go and walk the dog (and spot coastal birds). Can park your car up the road and it's about 15 mins walk to get to the site. There is also a nice cafe you pass on the industrial road which is dog friendly too.
Lewis K — Google review
I used to visit every week until the land owner decided to place huge concrete blocks along the access road to prevent parking. I still go (via Instow) and it's still the same peaceful place. Great for bird watching and dog walking.
Adrian S — Google review
I am sure it is great for the birds which is the main thing, but if you want to visit its hard to find, hard to park, bit of a trek to get to, and not much to see when you do. So, I'd not go out of my way to visit, leave it for the birds. Which is no problem at all.
Stephen B — Google review
Nice open space just off the Tarka Trail near Yelland. The marsh is bordered by SW Coastal Path to the west and Home Farm Marsh to the east.
Mark E — Google review
A natural salt marsh that is often missed by tourists visiting North Devon. Important roosting area for Curlew and whimbrel. Also a good chance of seeing osprey and spoonbill.
Derek B — Google review
A very nice place to walk or bring a picnic and watch the wildlife but most of all enjoy the peace and quiet.

Great, safe, Park for all ages & particularly good for families with growing children. Something for everyone here. The ajoining football field is well maintained, safe & secure. The local shop, opposite, sells everything ... & its a Hermes parcel drop-off/collection point too! We are lucky to have this lovely area in our village. Please respect it!
Janice M — Google review
Good little park. Although it does have one of the most worrying rollercoaster style "things" my boy had quite a bad tumble on it a few years back. Im not really sure if it was ever risk assessed or if it complies with any safety regulations.
Alex T — Google review
Good variety of playground apparatus, wheel chair friendly round about and full size football pitch. Outdoor gym equipment lacking in variety mainly cross trainers
Peter G — Google review
Free parking for about 15 cars large football field and play ground with enough stuff to play on for a good 20 - 30 kids. Equipment is in good state.

Park has two slides 2 pairs of swings, roundabout and all sorts, brilliant for toddlers

A great park for a village, the kids always lovw going there. There's a shop within 50 metres and a chippy near by.
