The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England is a modern art deco-style attraction that opened in 1998. It's the UK's largest aquarium and part of the Ocean Conservation Trust, focusing on research and conservation. The aquarium features a variety of marine life from Devon to the tropics, including fish, sharks, turtles, and jellyfish. Visitors can enjoy feeding sessions, an underwater tunnel experience, and a cafe with panoramic harbor views.
The most fantastic Aquarium I have ever been to which includes the largest fish tank in the UK. It even has a small sunken bi-plane within the tank, (which tells you how large we are talking here) The sharks, and massive sea turtle (called Friday) were incredible. I have not been to another aquarium in the UK that includes sharks! Staff have an incredible amount of knowledge about the animals in the aquarium all the way down to their behaviours and how each of them interact with the divers that feed them. At various points you get to see the divers go into the water. This is by far the largest and most impressive aquarium I have seen, if you are into your marine animals this opportunity is certainly not to be missed! Definitely check this place out if you are ever visiting Plymouth!

We visited this place with our 5 year old son and were a bit disappointed that extra attractions, like soft play, were unavailable. We enjoyed the big aquarium and watching the team of reaserchers at the lab. If you have an autistic child like we do I'll advice you to be there first in the morning as it becomes busy later on. The tickets can be used for the whole day which is fantastic as we didn't have a chance to see everything in our first round. Our son just runs like a Flash😆 Lovely, friendly staff. X

A great place to visit for young and old. You can spend a few hours just wandering around at your own pace looking at the vast array of fish, turtles and sharks. My children loved this place. This is my second time here and would definitely return for a third time.
A K — Google review
2nd visit to the Aquarium using our yearly tickets which is a good plus when the buy a ticket. No wait to enter. You start at the top and self guided tour. Good displays with good information about the creatures. Easily spend 2 hours in there plus more if you choose to have food which we didn't so cannot give you information on that. Very family orientated and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Large shop on exit with varying gifts, mementos for all budgets .
Mark P — Google review
Lots of information and big fish. We took about an hour to go around, we did not read the information boards which could easily add another hour. There are a couple of places to sit and watch which is a pleasant way to spend some time. They offer a year's entry for the price of a day; £26 per adult, which is quite pricey if you only visit once. However visit again within the year and it becomes fantastic value!
Jason H — Google review
I have read the reviews before I went to this aquarium so I knew what to expect. To be honest, the staff are quite friendly and helpful, and I wish I could give it a higher point, but the fish tanks are too small, and the so-called biggest fish tank could have come with a bit more fish or more impressive fish. I think perhaps because the major visitors of this aquarium are kids and their families these days, they stick too many stickers with words and scientific facts on the wall, yet put too few fish to see. The best room is the room with the lecture, the curvy glass helps us to see the animals more clearly. The lecturer was very enthusiastic when she talked about sharks, rays, and the green turtle. I do not mind that they make the Aquarium more educational, but I hope they prioritize the fish rather than people. Whether bigger or smaller fish, they need more space to swim. For the size and the reputation of this museum, they could have done better.
Etheria H — Google review
Visited the the National Marine Aquarium in October half term and it was really busy as you would expect. We were interested in visiting here as is billed as the country's largest aquarium, housing over 5,000 animals in four different areas of the building. It also boasts the UK's deepest fish tank that holds up to 2.5 million litres of water and it was officially opened in 1998. We had already booked tickets on line, but still had to queue 15 minutes to gain entry. The exhibits were nicely spaced out and you can view the enormous fish tank on the different floors. We probably spent a couple of hours before leaving. The staff were helpful and it supports a charity dedicated to marine conservation.
Villan C — Google review
So much too see. There was 2 school parties here when I went and they looked intrigued by the big tank while they were at a talk. I loved it,my daughter in law showed us the way luckily else I'd have been going in circles. Didn't see any seahorses which were there last time and the sharks were not that big but my fave were the mantas and stingrays. There were some really big starfish,a turtle and lots of strange looking fish and anemones. Got a years pass on buying entry tickets so will be returning soon.

Food & Drink
Plymouth Gin Distillery, situated in the historic Barbican area, is the oldest working gin distillery in England. The building itself dates back to the early 1400s and features a medieval hall known as the Refectory, which boasts a remarkable hull-shaped timber roof from 1431. Visitors can partake in pre-booked tours that provide insight into the craft of producing Plymouth Gin and indulge in tutored tastings of their renowned range.
FANTASTIC!! Every single second. Pippa our guide was the most amazing woman and made the experience second to none. We booked on to the masters upgraded tour and it was honestly the most enjoyable afternoon I can recall. I would highly recommend paying the extra for the experience we received. Thank you to Pippa for hosting us. You are a gem to the company
Grace P — Google review
An absolute must-do! Really enjoyed the distilling tour and tasting experience, Kirsty was an excellent guide and kept us entertained and engaged throughout. I will never view or taste gin in the same way, very enjoyable and excellent value for money. Highly recommend!
Alichia Z — Google review
Another distillery visited. I got my pin badge and a navy strength bottle of gin to go in my bar. Thank you very much. Some great details on the building. Lots of history. Amazingly strong cocktails. Hubby loved the whisky he had in the bar, he wishes he'd of taken the name. If we ever visit Plymough again, we will definitely drop in.
Carey C — Google review
I went on an upgraded masters tour with five friends and family yesterday and it was just exceptional. It's such a fun experience. Our guide Karly was so knowledgeable and engaging. We had a wonderful tour, learnt about the history of gin, had a gin tasting, made our own gin with an amazing array of botanicals to choose from and had two cocktails in the beautiful upstairs bar, which is also steeped in history. A magical day I would highly recommend. What a treat!
Laura H — Google review
I’d give this a miss. I’ve done a fair few distillery tours and this was by far the worst one I’ve ever been too. It’s relatively informative but the tour guide we had was rough. She basically yelled at us the entire time like she was leading an outdoor river cruise with no microphone. There were “jokes” in the script and it felt almost like she was trained to do a high energy tour, but has been imprisoned here for decades and it has drained all life and energy out of her. So now, she regurgitates the words but emotionless. Like an animatronic animal from an 80s theme park. The tour finished in about 40 minutes. The bar is fit out beautifully and the bartender was lovely. The gift shop was underwhelming and was manned by two ladies in the middle of a d&m and were all consumed. I get that these tours are feeders to buy more stuff (booze, bric-à-brac, etc) but whoever is in charge needs to revamp this entire process.
Some G — Google review
We had some time in Plymouth, so wanted to do the Distillery Tour, which was really good, an hour with the very entertaining Kirsty, talking us thru the history of Plymouth Gin and the Distillery, very educational learning about the botanicals, then finished off with a refreshing G&T in the bar, well worth the £15
Neil S — Google review
We went on the Upgraded Gin Tour, explaining the history of the building, the distillery and gin in general. Our guid was Karly, who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic throughout. We saw aspects and elements of the process and got to try making our own micro batches of gin, using some of their fantastic supply of botanical. On top of the different samples we tried on the tour there were drinks at the Refectory Bar afterwards. A brilliant day from start to finish!
CanavanConnolly — Google review
Myself and my partner went for one of the distillery tours ran by Kirsty and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We both live in Plymouth and this was our first time on one of the tours. Kirsty was very informative and we feel like we have learnt about gin and the distilling process. The free drinks at the end were also a winner.

Royal William Yard is a historic site in Devon and Cornwall, featuring imposing Royal Navy buildings from the early 1800s. Once a naval victualling yard, it now houses restaurants, shops, and apartments with stunning sea views. The Grade-listed buildings date back to 1828 and are said to have been built by former prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. The area offers easy access to beaches and attractions like Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican.
I did not know about this place until April 2025. Very nicely set out historic buildings by the sea. Lots of food and drink options and good walking around and about.

Great place to go for a walk around, coffee, beer or food. Stayed at the bistro Pierre and went across on the ferry to edgcumbe . Nice spot for micro brewery beer, interesting history to the yard. It was originally built in the early 19th century for the Navy
Tim P — Google review
A stunningly restored Victorian victualling yard. The buildings are impressive in their size. It gives an insight to the size and enormity of the RN in the age of sail and what it took to keep it supplied. The restaurants a top class, our favourite being the food and service at Wagamamas.
Andrew M — Google review
Royal William Yard is undeniably a splendid waterfront destination—rich in history, teeming with culture, and architecturally captivating. It shines as a day-visitor or leisure hotspot, offering a memorable mix of relaxation, gastronomy, shopping, and artistic flair. However, if you're considering living there, tread carefully. The high cost, logistical challenges, and lifestyle trade-offs mean you might enjoy it more from the outside than as a daily home.
Gurpreet S — Google review
Arrived on a Sat afternoon. A few restaurants / bars are opened. But generally the place is very quiet. Very few shops. Nothing much to do if you are not there for a drink.
D A — Google review
A Must-Visit in Plymouth – Royal William Yard We spent the day at Royal William Yard and it honestly exceeded expectations. It’s one of those rare places that blends history, scenery, food, and accessibility so perfectly that there’s something for everyone – whether you’re here with kids, friends, or older family members. History & Atmosphere The Yard is steeped in history — originally built in the 1820s–30s to supply the Royal Navy. Today, the beautiful Grade I listed stone buildings have been restored and given new life as restaurants, cafés, shops, and even a cinema. You really feel the history as you walk around — but it’s alive and buzzing, not just a museum piece. Things to Do There’s so much on offer: • Restaurants & Cafés – from Bistrot Pierre to Hook & Line, Wagamama, Seco Lounge and more. Coffee stops, wine bars, even a brewery — it’s food heaven. • Everyman Cinema – luxury cinema with sofas and food served to your seat. • Walks & Views – stunning coastal walks, sea views across to Cornwall and Mount Edgcumbe, and lovely lawns for picnics. • Activities – paddle boarding, sea swimming, yoga on the lawn, and a marina for boating. • Events & Markets – from food festivals to art shows and outdoor cinema nights, there’s always something happening. Accessibility We visited with my mother-in-law who is wheelchair-bound and were so impressed at how friendly and accommodating the Yard is. Parking is good, routes are mostly level, and staff in the restaurants and cafés couldn’t have been more helpful. Yes, some areas are cobbled or uneven (part of the history!), but overall it’s one of the most accessible historic sites I’ve been to. For Families & Adults Alike Kids will love the open spaces, the boats in the marina, and the chance to explore the history trail. Adults can relax with great food, drinks, and those unbeatable sea views. Whether you’re here for a lively evening or a peaceful daytime stroll, it’s got the right balance. The Highlight For me, it was simply sitting with a coffee, watching the sea and taking in the view across to Cornwall. The combination of majestic architecture, open water, and welcoming atmosphere makes Royal William Yard unforgettable. ✅ Summary: If you’re visiting Plymouth, don’t miss Royal William Yard. It’s more than just a spot to eat – it’s a full experience of history, leisure, and beauty by the sea. We’ll definitely be back.
Akiva T — Google review
Recent trip to Plymouth we stumbled across this place and so glad we did, we had an amazing afternoon into evening spent here. The amazingly restored buildings and architecture is well worth a visit just to walk around with a coffee but we booked into the Le Vignoble for a jazz and wine afternoon, then we went to the fabulous Movie theatre (Everyman) and what a place well worth it for the novelty purposes! Then we had dinner at Pierre restaurant which was lovely then to finish the evening off one last little stroll around to take the area in

The Box is a newly opened cultural hub in Plymouth, offering a diverse range of exhibits and activities throughout the year. The multi-million pound museum and arts center features fine art, cultural artifacts, and multimedia exhibitions. Its flagship exhibition, Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy, showcases new artifacts from around the world related to the Mayflower journey.
I discovered this place when putting in a Google search of things to do in the area on a rainy day! It was indeed a very wet day so we headed over to The Box and as I love a museum with local history, I was looking forward to the visit. Very good natural history display and excellent video showing the history and development of Plymouth through the ages. Plymouth's place as a major world port was the subject of another of the rooms. There is a cafe and shop, and this is free to visit. Highly recommended and very child friendly.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Featuring galleries dedicated to art, history and natural sciences, one can spend quite an enjoyable day taking in all the exhibits and contents of this museum. If feeling peckish, the restaurant in the entrance lobby is not only roomy but also serves good food. Don't forget to pop into the building across from the entrance as it is part of the museum and also features exhibits.
A R — Google review
This was a brilliant museum to visit, showcasing the history of Plymouth and its surrounding areas throughout centuries! The exhibits about ships are really interesting with displays of different ones that sailed from the city, particularly the one heading to the North Pole. Information is also shown about how people followed their career paths from Plymouth and model of the city's planning is well-crafted, creative imagery of outdoor areas is admirable itself too! Various cameras and their usage in theatres are delved into, television promotional aspects are revealed also. Artwork section is very creative with the likes of a pram holding up a twig with leaves, multi-headed women and a tree with unique branches off of it!
K. P — Google review
The Box is a great immersive/interactive museum which provides all ages a great way to experience history from in and around Plymouth and surrounding areas. It’s a real eye opening experience which provides different rooms full of unique information. I’d strongly recommend this to University students or people who are passionate about history. Although families or younger adults may also enjoy certain sections of the museum and of course the gift shop! There is also a small cafe downstairs which provides a variety of drinks and snacks if you plan a longer visit!

Great place to visit, plenty of interesting items to look at and a great place for kids 😀 cafe is a bit expensive but good food. Having to return as we couldn't see it all on the day. 🙂 Went to the box again to finish off where we went last time. Went to the top floor and it was fantastic 😊 lot's to see and the tapestries were brilliant, found all the hidden items in them. Great history around Plymouth would recommend the box 😁

So much to see and do. Took my 9yr old Granddaughter and we both loved it. Cafe was reasonably priced and good food too.

In this eautiful building from 1910 you can find an interesting " for all the family" exhibitions about Plymouth's history and prehistoric history, a small nature museum style exhibition which is very interesting and a modern art one too. Free admission, nice cafe, pleasent staff , absolutely perfect. Highly recommend visit.

Smeaton's Tower is a landmark lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe that offers amazing views of Plymouth Sound and the city. The 93 steps up to the lantern chamber offer an adrenaline rush for some, while others may enjoy just watching people and enjoying the sunshine on Plymouth Hoe. A must-see tourist attraction in Devon!
Have walked past thousands of times but not been in since a child. It was 10 am and they had just opened, £5 admission and I had the whole tower to myself. The climb is not too bad, two low doorways to duck under and four sets of ladders. The views from the top are spectacular and a nice place to catch your breath in the breeze and take in the views. Staff were friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit if not been before 👍
Marcus W — Google review
Smeaton’s Tower, Plymouth – A Must-Visit Historic Gem! As a Google Local Guide and an explorer of hidden gems, I highly recommend visiting Smeaton’s Tower if you're in Plymouth. This iconic red-and-white lighthouse offers not only a fascinating dive into maritime history but also one of the best panoramic views of Plymouth Hoe and the coastline. Climbing to the top is a bit of a workout, especially through the narrow spiral staircase, but it's absolutely worth it. Each level has well-preserved displays showing how the lighthouse keepers lived and worked — a real glimpse into the past. The top viewing platform is the highlight: the fresh sea breeze, stunning vistas of the English Channel, and the sense of history make it an unforgettable experience. Staff were friendly and informative, adding to the overall visit. Pro tips: Wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget your camera! Whether you're a history buff, architecture lover, or just in for the views, Smeaton’s Tower is a Plymouth treasure you shouldn't miss.

Very beautiful park on the coast 🤩 beautiful view of the sea, ships and the island. The lighthouse is located in the middle of the park, which adds charm to the city 👌There are cafes all along the coast. Be sure to take a walk!

This is a nice opportunity to see what it is like inside a lighthouse. This decommissioned lighthouse still has artefacts inside showing its history. It has low ceilings and narrow stairs but you get great views from the top.

We caught it as the sun was going down. It's in a prominent location. Not sure whether you can climb it. Settings surrounding the tower were fabulous. It was nice and quiet.

Amazing experience at Smeaton’s Tower! It was a wonderful experience to climb to the top of the tower. Inside, there are rooms and a kitchen to explore, and it’s an excellent spot for taking photos. The ticket prices are very reasonable — highly recommended for visitors to Plymouth!

Tinside Lido is a remarkable outdoor saltwater swimming pool situated along Plymouth Hoe, boasting an iconic 1930s Art Deco design. This beloved attraction offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim while taking in breathtaking views of the sea. Whether you're a serious swimmer or simply looking for a unique spot to relax and bask in the sun, Tinside Lido combines architectural splendor with seaside leisure.
On a hot sunny day, this has to be one of the best days out! Affordable tickets for Plymouth residents and only £2 to hire a sun lounger for whole visit. Lifeguards were attentive and staff were friendly. The pool is great, it isn't heated but is refreshing once you get used to it. Would 100% recommend and re-visit :)
Fran S — Google review
It's a beautiful pool, but 60° outside and the water is not heated, means everyone needs to wear a wetsuit and that's no fun. The other thing I didn't like is that they charge to enter the pool. It was paid for by citizens and should be free to the public. It's not fair to the poor. Add insult to injury, everything has a cost: chaise, wetsuit, toys, etc. I felt bad for the families who didn't have enough money to swim in this hoity-toity pool seemingly restored only for those from the hoity toighty neighborhood. I felt so bad that I was seriously looking to see where I could donate some money for the less fortunate. They should also be able to enjoy this fantastic pool, but I doubted that they would actually get it. This is a very rich town. They can afford open it up to everyone.
Lia S — Google review
Dropped into the Tinside Lido where the pool is currently closed but its a great place to go swimming in the summer. There is a small fee but you can spend all day there. There's great views from the Lido plus toilets and also the coffee pod serving hot drinks that are very reasonably priced. The lovely Lily who served us was a great host. Big thankyou to Lily really enjoyed our coffee and meeting you. Definitely be returning in the summer next year to have the full experience.

First visit, took grandkids while staying with us in Devon. Staff friendly and helpful, place was clean and tidy, change rooms good, toilets good, cafe good, chairs and sunbeds cheap to hire. Pool was amazing, clean and in good condition. Good life guard cover. Had a great swim with views over the Sound. Well worth a visit.

Heritage! It's best lido as a thalasso pool. But, sea water not heated-up, freezing even summer season.
Mutlu P — Google review
I love this lido! There is clean sea water (in June is still cold!), nice staff and the best - limited people are allowed, so it's not over crowded. Facilities are decent. There are lockers in the changing room. Small cafe shop offer ice cream, snacks and hot & cold drinks and accept cards. Also you can hire a sunbed (£2.00) or deck chair (£1.50) and pay by card at cafe (2023 prices update).

The Mayflower Steps Memorial, located in the Barbican area of Plymouth, is a significant historical site where the Pilgrims are believed to have departed England aboard the Mayflower in 1620. Although the original steps no longer exist, a granite block and commemorative portico with a Doric column mark this pivotal moment in history. The memorial is adorned with British and American flags, symbolizing the departure of 102 passengers on their journey to North America.
Yep, they are steps. Enshrined with a literal and figurative doorway. You can’t go down the steps, but they’re there. It’s pretty much a guarantee the mayflower did not leave from here. But it’s a nice photo

As a family historian, with many ancestors who emigrated from England to the USA, I found this memorial interesting and nearby there is a list of passengers who sailed on the Mayflower. I have watched Genealogy programmes where descendants have been traced of those who set sail from near this point and it would be fun to find my own family connection. This will be of interest to those interested in the Mayflower story and there is a museum nearby. Free to visit.

Could not visit Plymouth without taking a look at this memorial, which stands in front of a viewing platform near to the place from where, on 16th September 1620, the Mayflower set sail with 102 Pilgrims on board, families hoping to find a better life and religious freedom in the New World. A bronze artwork tells the story of their experiences on this perilous voyage into the unknown, through illustrations, historical information, and personal accounts. The steps leading down into the water are relatively modern (the original ones no longer exist). There's a museum about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower close by. I did not get time to visit it, but there's a tourist information centre on the ground floor where I found helpful staff, and was given a free map of Plymouth. Well worth coming here to learn about this significant event in British and US history.
Valerie H — Google review
This is a great memorial to the Pilgrim's voyage but not the place where they actually stepped aboard the Mayflower. This part of the harbor was not there in 1620, the actual steps are across the Barbican road on Castle Street. There’s a black plaque on the side of the Pilgrim's Ice Cream shop. pilgrims who set sail. That was where the edge of the harbour was back then.

Extremely historical! I wish both countries would clean and maintain it better. Both flags should be replaced, as well as lighting and pavers.
V N — Google review
Bit let down by this place it's such a big part of nautical history but I didn't feel there was enough attention brought to it,maybe because the weather wasn't with us that day so the crowds weren't there but the Arch looks good after the renovation and the plaques set up around the walls give a good insight into the history, the battery is also really close by so hopefully it will get more American tourists because it's a very important part of American history

Found this memorial during a walk around Plymouth Harbour. It's amazing to think the Pilgrims were brave enough to leave for a new, unknown world from this very spot.

The Royal Citadel is a 17th-century fortress with a baroque gateway, garrison church, and historic weaponry. It served as a defense against the Dutch and continues to operate as a military base. Visitors can explore its history and architecture while being mindful of strict entrance regulations due to its active military status. The citadel's strategic location offers spectacular views of Plymouth Sound, making it an ideal spot for a picnic after immersing in historical tours.
Quite an impressive building, I only walked around the perimeter as this is a working base, but I think it is a English Heritage property and you can book to tour it.
Amy F — Google review
Access is closed for bookings knly and closed for winter. Also English heritage membership card is useless here because u have to pay extra to book. Here is some background: The Royal Citadel in Plymouth was built in the 17th century to defend the city against potential naval attacks. Commissioned by Charles II, it played a key role in military defense during various conflicts, including the English Civil War and World War II. The citadel’s robust design features impressive ramparts, bastions, and views over Plymouth Sound.

Reputed to be the longest continually 'manned' military base in Great Britain, originally built around the time of the English Civil War, there is a date stone (1660) in the lower wall on the West Sally Port. They still do guided walks only see website for up to date information. Outside the main North entrance you can find a Fairbairn-Sykes Commando Fighting Knife memorial.

I had the honour to be a guest of a meeting function inside the citadel. It feels really good being indoors. Food and service were really good.

Nice place, pretty and scenic however, the Military personal inside didn't take kindly to me taking an afternoon jog across the main plaza, found myself in the ER with 3 bullet holes to the chest very fast. Overall, nice bed and breakfast.

Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park is a grand 16th-century manor located on the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall, just a short drive from Plymouth. The former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe, it is surrounded by Grade Cornish Gardens within an expansive 865-acre country park. Visitors can explore five different walks, each offering unique views and attractions.
Lovely walks and amazing veiws of Plymouth sound. Nice place to spend the day taking in the sites and history. We only walked around the gardens and popped into the cafe for a spot of lunch, but still worth it for the gardens.

What a Beautiful Place idyllic for a Picnic .. A Walk and bonus find Cycle Path 2 signposted though it (gravel bikes) Scenic and tranquil .. will be going back as it's overlooking Plymouth which is set out for Armed Forces Day .. It's easy to get to off Cremyll Ferry (2.50pp) lovely pub nearby the Edgcumbe Arms serving All Day Carvery. The house isn't or wasn't open to visitors (Lady Edgcumbe not in residence) but there is a little café set behind it. A must on a lovely day to admire the gardens and view points 👌
Angela P — Google review
You have to ring to book a guided tour if you want to go inside the house. Tour guide gives an excellent talk in the downstairs rooms (takes about an hour so young children maybe bored) then you're allowed to wander on your own upstairs. You can take photos but no flash. Lovely side garden to the house and garden walks a little further out. Beautiful views over the River and you can walk down the steep hill to the waterside where you'll find beautiful formal gardens and cafe at the Orangery, views across the river over the sound where you can follow to the ferry or the other way along to the little stony beaches. There is a 2nd cafe at top of the hill near the house. Also toilets at both locations too.

Nestled in 33 acres of picturesque parkland just outside Plymouth, Dartmoor Zoo is a family-owned conservation and education charity. It boasts an impressive array of wildlife, including 72 types of mammals, 38 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles, and various invertebrates. The zoo offers seasonal events such as outdoor cinema screenings and evening classes on conservation and animal welfare.
We had our wedding at Dartmoor zoo in September 2025. Jade was very warm and welcoming and from the start made it a much less stressful experience. She answered questions and came up with solutions promptly. The team were accommodating with setting up our wedding and also clearing up after. We had an absolutely amazing wedding day and our guest all had a fantastic time. The meet the meerkats and falconry made it such a memorable day for everyone involved.
Simone H — Google review
We were visiting the area and thought we’d stop in to Dartmoor Zoo as they are supposed to have one of the largest collections of big cats. The zoo wasn’t as big as we thought it might be, so you could easily walk around in half a day but it was still packed full with lots to see. We met a few volunteers working at the zoo who were extremely knowledgable and obviously had a great passion for what they did. We attended some of their talks which were very interesting. It was great to see lots of the animals and big cats up close. I would have given 5* but I think certain areas of the zoo perhaps need a big of TLC, and some of the enclosures needed updating, with some of the larger animals seemingly needing bigger enclosures with more enrichment.
Mel W — Google review
Great little Zoo, friendly knowledgeable staff. Don't go here expecting a massive Zoo with hundreds of animals, instead think of it as a more up close experience, the staff actually care for these animals it's not just a Saturday job so to speak, and as an added bonus they're not trying to sell you stuff every 10 paces. So why only 4 out of 5 stars I hear you ask, well....... Their coffee sucks, that is it plain and simple, you might like it I didn't. I had burger and chips from the Cafe, the burger was tasty and the chips were nice and crispy, my Mrs had Fish and Chips, the only thing she said was the fish could be a little bigger but I think we both agreed it is simple nice hot food which is all we wanted. Great job Dartmoor Zoo thank you.
Barry D — Google review
This is a lovely little wildlife park, it's great for a morning or afternoon but not enough for us for the day. There's lot's of animals to see and information on them all. The staff are all so friendly. The disabled parking is inside the park up the hill. If needed you need to purchase your tickets then they will open the gates and you can drive in. There's a nice cafe selling light lunches as well as cakes. The animals all seem happy and well looked after although some of the enclosures could be larger. It does look like they are doing lots of work to improve this.
Hannah W — Google review
If you have a guest in a wheelchair, basically forget it. Hills all over the zoo. Parts of the pathways are not maintained, if a pathway at all. Only good part is parking for disabled, you get to park in the middle of the zoo. Animals could do with a bit more food in my opinion. Do have a variety of animals, but not many. Is great for younger children for a few hours.

A small but well kept zoo. Animals is beautiful condition- the jaguar in particular. The otters were very entertaining too. Had a lovely chat with a keeper about their newt. A shout out to the cafe team for perfectly prepared gluten free pizza that was coeliac safe! Will definitely visit again.

Had a Brilliant day at Dartmoor Zoo. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. In particular Henry knew a lot about the animals and was a lovely guy. A lot of the staff are volunteers and you can tell they really enjoy what they do. Loved dragon the tiger, he really put a good show for the visitors. Also loved the otters. It was a shame about the rainy weather but still didn’t want to leave!

Had a thoroughly lovely day today at Dartmoor Zoo with my 3 children who also had a great time. Animals all looked well looked after, the staff were very friendly and the zoo itself was very very clean. The tiger was a particular highlight as you could see it in all it's majestic glory fairly close. The birds and monkeys were also very lovely to see. Would highly recommend. We spent around 3 hours there and that felt about right and saw most things at least twice in that time. Very much looking forward to utilising the annual ticket and to go back and see anything we missed.

The Theatre Royal Plymouth is Britain's largest regional theatre, offering a varied programme in performance spaces like The Lyric. It was built in the Regency era and has undergone several transformations over the years. After a multi-million pound refurbishment, it reopened in 2013 with state-of-the-art facilities and showcased the award-winning show 'War Horse'. Located on Royal Parade, it's just a 10-minute walk from the University of Plymouth campus.
Theatre Royal Plymouth: A Cultural Gem in the South West Tucked into the heart of Plymouth, the Theatre Royal stands as one of the South West’s greatest cultural assets. It’s a venue that consistently punches above its weight—intimate in size but bold in ambition, attracting major touring productions that might otherwise skip the region entirely. Having seen The Devil Wears Prada and Kinky Boots The Musical here, it’s clear this theatre is doing something right. The programming is confident and contemporary, bringing in big names and crowd-pullers while maintaining a strong sense of accessibility. The layout is smart—great sightlines from almost every seat, and a sense of closeness to the stage that larger venues often lack. It’s that rare combination: a big-theatre experience in a setting that still feels personal. The building is well maintained, the staff are friendly and efficient, and everything runs smoothly—from the moment you walk through the doors to the final curtain call. In short, it’s not just a great theatre for Plymouth—it’s a major player in the UK’s regional arts scene. A true gem.

We came to watch Hamilton - what a fantastic show that is!! Interval was rather short though so no time to go toilets and get drinks… Just about got an icecream, but the lady (very friendly and helpful staff) had to reopen again!..
Nicole S — Google review
My first trip to the Theatre Royal was far from successful, but they corrected their error, which goes a long way in my book. Let me paint the scene. Your favourite show is touring the UK, & you have additional needs, plus some. You take time, 17 months before the show is even in your area to scope out the venue, finding the wheelchair accessible seat that suits your needs with theatre staff assisting. They won't let you try anywhere else, you trust them, after all. The big day comes, you arrive & find your seat isn't suitable due to the additional seats in your row. This is made worse by a gentleman next to you who leans forward, blocking your view as your seats are on the right side of the stage, so his body position really matters. Afterwards you speak to staff who show you the perfect seat downstairs that you never got to see. It works (just), & staff say the access team will email you. Ten days goes by, nothing. You reach out, because this matters to you & time is NOT on your side. A lovely lady from the access team reaches out, & states she saw you arriving & noted you wouldn't see anything that night. Instead of platitudes, she grabbed the bull by the horns & took responsibility, rebooking you on one of two dates available. The second attempt was MUCH better. I had a brilliant night & it was interesting comparing cast members from the two shows, weeks apart. You see, that is how it should be, owning errors & taking responsibility. No one is perfect, & mistakes happen, but action is much better than platitudes. Before leaving I took time to explore the changing places toilet. The usual checks, making sure the place was clean, that everything worked, the red cord alarm cord was hanging down to the floor & not tied up etc. Photo attached. I've also suggested the website be updated to include the lift dimensions, as it isn't that large, I struggled. How sad it would be for someone to turn up & discover their night of magic be inaccessible when there is a simple fix? My only issue now is due to my particular needs there is only one space in the main theatre that will fit me. I now have even more of a battle on my hands to get tickets for it. Unfortunately, the cost of this one seat is almost double the other options that physically aren't suitable for me. I am hoping there could be some compromise on this under the Equality Act 2010, or sadly my new regular treat will be out of reach.

What a breathtaking performance from the Birmingham Royal Ballet and orchestra. Ballet mixed with contemporary dance and classic Black Sabbath tracks. Theatre Royal at all levels amazing. Looking forward my next visit is to see Women in Black. I've already booked next year's Don Quixoute Ballet.

Absolutely wonderful theatre! The staff are so lovely and attentive making sure you get to your seat ok, and that you have the right place to be. The bar staff are just as great, really smiley friendly people!. The theatre itself is beautiful. The seats were really comfy, the air was cool so didnt get too warm or sweaty with that many people! Definitely recommend watching a show here! I watched hamilton and it was amazing!! Ive added a photo so you can see what the view is like from my seat, I sat in 26 Row A of the upper seats. Im 5 foot 5 and the metal bar came to under the stage when I sat all the way back! So it was perfect for me.
Kate — Google review
Seats are quite small and close. Not much room either side for arms and not much leg room. Angry usher shouting at people about putting things on front of balcony. Could have just put some signs up. Apart from that stage view was good, sound was clear.

I suppose because I visited on a Thursday the place felt a bit deserted and top floor of the house was closed off... so overall I walked out feeling a little underwhelmed. There could be more benches to sit on, they could do something about the mouldy smell in the castle folly. Didn't see any activities for kids. The orangery was bare and empty. It was otherwise a lovely place, very pleasant for a short walk around the grounds. There's a little gate (locked) connecting the house grounds with a lovely riverside walk. I enjoyed the walk but you have to head back out to the car park to start the walk. Enjoyed my couple hours there but a little disappointed overall.

The Elizabethan House in Plymouth, built in 1599, has recently undergone a significant restoration as part of the Plymouth Mayflower 400 commemorations. Despite surviving the challenges of slums and the Plymouth Blitz, it has been strengthened to ensure its longevity. The house now offers an immersive visitor experience with guided tours that provide insight into the history of The Barbican. This historic property is a prime example of 16th-century architecture and is furnished to reflect its Tudor-era origins.
The place is fascinating taking you back in time. Family friendly as children are allowed to touch and trails are available. What made it extra spectacular was the staff who are knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. They made our visit really memorable

Fascinating Elizabethan building with a well researched history presented in each room of this house.

The Elizabethan House offers a fascinating journey through over 400 years of history, with its origins dating back to 1599. As you explore, you step into the lives of the many people who once called it home, gaining insight into how the house has evolved alongside the community around it. The experience not only brings the past to life but also highlights the building’s cultural importance in its historical context. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a love of history. It’s an enriching experience, surprisingly affordable, and operated through The Box.

Visited on Friday. Very enjoyable and interesting, recommended highly. I think the level of theatrical interpretation is just right and brings it to life. A lovely restoration job. My only suggestion would be maybe just a teeny bit more light in the rooms as the interesting objects weren’t always easy to see clearly, but that’s just my opinion. 5* attraction.

Travelled over 100 miles to see this, get there and closed!!!! Website says open, Google says open but closed!!! Went with someone autistic who is really into this era and was so upset. The least you could of done is updated Google and your webpage so visited didnt waste the whole day travelling to you for you to be closed! How are people to hsve confidence in your opening hours if you cant even be bothered to update it! Won't be doing this again!

This museum is a small gem. Starting at the top of the house you work you way several hundred years of history. Simple but thoughtful displays are good. Informative guides are around if you want more information. Excellent toilets outside at the back. Follow up with a visit to the Elizabethan garden a little further up the same street.

Shopping mall
Shopping
Located in the heart of Plymouth, Drake Circus is a modern shopping mall featuring a striking glass and steel design. With over 70 shops including top UK brand names, visitors can indulge in retail therapy and explore a variety of dining options. Additionally, Plymouth offers other shopping destinations such as the Royal William Yard, a historic naval provisions storage facility transformed into a vibrant hub for restaurants, art galleries, and independent boutiques. The area also hosts open-air events like live music and art exhibitions.
Drake Circus Shopping Mall, Plymouth 🛍️ Located in the city centre this Circular layout mall houses popular brands such as Levi’s, Pandora & Mango, buzzing Primark, H&M , M&S , New Look , River Island , Boots , Superdrug and lots more. There’s no shortage of food spots either, whether you want something quick inside the mall or prefer a bite from the newly opened eateries on the streets. Plenty of parking available and easy access to The Box museum and The Barcode Cineworld, perfect for shopping and exploring.

All the main shops, probably the best car park system I've ever seen too. Yet the complex has no soul, no decent food or coffee shops, it's just very generic. Decent Next mind you.
Martin ( — Google review
I recently spent a full day at Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth, and overall I was pleasantly impressed. Situated right in the heart of the city, the centre brings together more than 70 familiar high-street and independent brands under one roof — it’s definitely one of the main retail hubs for the region. From the moment I arrived, I found the layout convenient and easy to navigate. The signage is clear, escalators and lifts work smoothly, and the clean, airy interiors made walking between shops comfortable. I also appreciated the free BT WiFi throughout, which made checking options and comparing prices on the go effortless. The retail mix is strong: I found everything from fashion, accessories, tech, to beauty and gift shops. Big names like Next and Primark anchor the centre, which helps draw a wide customer base. For a break, the adjacent Barcode entertainment complex adds real value — it offers a modern cinema (including IMAX), various restaurants, indoor mini-golf, and more, which is perfect for combining shopping with leisure. In terms of practicalities, the parking is generous, though the rates can mount up if you stay many hours. Shopmobility is available, which is a helpful inclusion for those with mobility constraints. My only minor critiques: during peak times, some corridors get crowded; and while the centre is modern, some areas feel a bit generic in design. But the positives far outweigh these. Cleanliness, accessibility, variety, and the integrated entertainment options make Drake Circus very worthwhile. I’d rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I look forward to returning.
Gurpreet S — Google review
The centre is compact and clean, with improvements made in recent years. It’s a small centre, with a mix of well known and lesser known brands. There are not that many stores and not much of a variety, the centre itself doesn’t have many services / amenities. The food options are fairly basic and are typically all fast food options. Many of the food options are the American brands that have been popular in recent years, such as Wendy’s, Taco Bell and popeyes. The centre doesn’t seem to have any empty units, meaning that they cannot expand their range. If the centre was larger, I’d rate it higher. It’s fine, but not a shopping destination that you need to visit.
Amy C — Google review
Drake Circus is a fantastic shopping destination right in the heart of Plymouth. The mall has a great selection of stores, from popular high-street brands to beauty, tech, and lifestyle shops – making it easy to find whatever you’re looking for in one convenient location. The centre is modern, clean, and well-maintained, with a spacious layout that makes for a relaxed shopping experience. It’s also beautifully decorated during festive seasons, which adds a really nice touch. There are plenty of food and drink options available, whether you’re after a quick coffee, a light lunch, or something more filling. The café and restaurant area on the upper floor offers a good variety and a nice spot to take a break. The staff across the stores and the mall itself are friendly and helpful, and there’s a strong sense of safety and organisation throughout. Parking is convenient, and the location is easily accessible by public transport. Overall, Drake Circus is a great place to shop, meet friends, or spend a rainy afternoon in Plymouth. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike!

Unlike most shopping centres in the UK..drake circus still has good footfall. Always busy enough, has the traditional Saturday shopper feel, with a good selection of shops. Good parking!
Heard-Tried-Judged — Google review
Its a carbon copy of every other shopping centre in the UK but a slightly smaller scale. Although though lift and escalator system is so flawed, leaving the upper level down behind Krispy Creme is near impossible. You are forced to use the stars next to Yo Sushi and double back on yourself if you dont want to wait for the tiny lift to take you down as the escalator is always out of use or blocked off.

The Mayflower Museum in Plymouth, Devon, England is a captivating tribute to the historic voyage of the Mayflower in 1620. The museum offers an immersive exploration of the ship's journey and its impact on history, including the Pilgrims' story and their enduring legacy. Located in the picturesque Barbican area of Plymouth, it is easily accessible by public transport or car.
As we are interested in the cultures of the UK and USA, this museum was on our list. We were not disappointed. A compact overview of the emigration/settlement of the east coast of the USA. Very nice exhibits and picture/multimedia information. Pleasant price/performance ratio. Friendly staff who were always available to answer our questions. Thanks and best wishes again. Well-stocked range of souvenirs, including about Plymouth and Devon. Visiting with dogs in a dog buggy was possible without any problems. Criticism: Unfortunately no public toilet available, but this is due to the structural conditions of the building. Greetings from Germany.💐😀

A brief but educational museum, positioned just across the road from where it’ll tell you the mayflower steps probably weren’t. There are interactive elements suited to younger children, and wall panels of text for the adults. All in, it did a good job of bringing the history to life and positioning it within an appropriate context.

A museum that provides a narrative of what happened before the Mayflower departed, its voyager and ultimate arrival in North America. With a focus on not on those colonists, but those tribes that were ultimately colonised. The museum is inexpensive, with a lift to all levels. You start at the top and work your way down. Due to the nature of the Mayflower, you won't see any primary exhibits (as few items would still be arouns from ordinary folk, with scant resources). Instead it will be from letters of the time, providing a narrative for the era and its impact to this day. I did hear an old boy complain about how the museum doesn't say about all the good things the colonisers did. Even saying those tribes would want reparations. Considering 90% of the Wampanoag died because of the colonisers, mainly from disease, I don't think that is a pat on the back moment for England. He seemed like the type of person, that this sort of narrative displayed in the museum could open up other point of view.
Tom ( — Google review
A small museum, plenty of interactive things for kids. Most of the displays are written text with few other exhibits. I found the timeline showing the journey the “Pilgrims made before actually setting off from Plymouth most interesting. Probably very interesting for visitor from the US looking to tracing their roots.

It's a shame the museum staff didn't update their opening hours here on Google to say they're closed on Sundays from November. Plymouth Market is a bustling hub of diverse food outlets, with recent additions including Maruish offering Mauritian cuisine, Vegan Lunch Co serving plant-based dishes, KiKus providing Japanese sushi, Everest Flavours offering Nepalese street food with a twist, and Lime serving French- and Italian-style dishes. The market also features Kawaffle and Mega Shakes among others.
Haven't been to Plymouth indoor market in a long time, was very pleasantly surprised. It was clean, well laid out, plenty of produce & choice. Toilets were very good, clean. We had lunch at a new Syrian food place.... It was lovely & the family serving were wonderful. Highly recommend.

There are a variety of different stalls, from food to clothes to games to perfume and makeup. A lot of the merchandise is "knock off" of an expensive brand.
Rachel — Google review
I spent a lively morning at Plymouth Market on Cornwall Street, and came away very impressed. With over 150 stalls under one roof, this is one of Plymouth’s best spots for fresh food, unique finds, and real local character. From the moment I walked in, I appreciated how bright and well-laid-out the space is. The modernist building, with its scalloped roof and natural light flooding through rooflights, creates a sense of openness. The aisles are spacious enough to browse without feeling cramped, though during busier times crowds do build around popular food stalls. The variety of stalls is excellent. I found plenty of fresh produce, fishmongers (like The Market Plaice), butchers, and fruit & veg of good quality. There are also stalls selling souvenirs, clothes, gifts, artisan crafts and things you don’t always see in big shopping centres—some real hidden gems. For food, the market delivers: international choices (Turkish, Thai, etc.), satisfying street-food style stalls, baked goods and sweets. Practical things are good too. The market is open six days a week (Monday-Saturday), from early morning until late afternoon (closed Sundays). There’s parking right at the market car park, though it fills up fast. If I were to fault anything, perhaps some stallholders have varying opening hours so you might find your favourite vendor closed unexpectedly. Also, at peak times it’s noisy and busy, which is part of the charm but could be overwhelming if you prefer quiet browsing. All told, Plymouth Market is a vibrant, authentic place to shop, eat, and soak up local flavour.

The Barbican is a historic area in Plymouth, featuring cobbled streets lined with 200 listed buildings of Tudor and Jacobean architecture. It's a popular spot for leisurely strolls, shopping, and dining at various restaurants and cafes. The neighborhood exudes a vibrant atmosphere during the summer, offering opportunities to explore the local history, purchase souvenirs from gift shops, and enjoy meals at family-owned restaurants serving fresh fish dishes.
Old part of Plymouth by the harbour, during the day, narrow cobbled streets with an eclectic mix of shops and pubs, it’s even got Plymouth Gin Distillery! What more could anybody want? Buzzing on the Saturday night I was there (I don’t know if it’s only Saturday nights) but plenty of bars and music to choose from.

Nestled in the picturesque Plym Valley, the Plym Valley Railway is a delightful heritage railway that transports visitors back to a charming bygone era. This enchanting destination features an impressive collection of steam and diesel locomotives, vintage carriages, and historic railway artifacts that truly capture the essence of rail travel from yesteryear. The railway operates on a scenic 1.
A lovely little steam train run which we had the enjoyment of the Christmas steam train this year, It's not too long and it's not too short and the staff seem very friendly and have the knowledge of the trains. It is also handy if you don't fancy walking through the wood to get to plymbridge from coypool. I highly recommend a visit here as it's a charity that is great at restoring old steam trains and diesel locomotives. Which can be preserved for years to come. So please support this little charity.

Such a brilliant railway, so much love and attention to detail put in. We’ve just had a birthday party on the train, it was so reasonably priced and the hard working volunteers couldn’t do enough for us. They really put everything into making our day special and we all had the best time. Thanks so much to all the team for such a fun day! Well worth doing this for a kids birthday party, you won’t regret it. We’ll be back again if you’ll have us :)

If you are in and around Plymouth we recommend a visit, but check they are open first! A great day and a great railway, keep up the excellent work guys! We'll be back......

Drake's Island in Plymouth has been off-limits to the public for a long time, but now you can take a boat across Plymouth Sound and explore the island. There are family activity days with various activities like airsoft, abseiling, and survival camps. The tour guides are knowledgeable and engaging, providing insights into the island's history. It's a great place for history enthusiasts and offers a mix of natural beauty and built history.
The tour guide/custodian we had was very insightful and engaging and more than happy to answer any questions. If you're at all interested in history (not just Plymouth's) this is well worth the trip. We had gale force winds so strong we could barely walk and it was still one of the best days of our trip here. Children will love it (especially the dark tunnels and the cannons) and the few dogs on our tour were thoroughly enjoying exploring. This may be tricky for those with limited mobility as it's a decent walk and very uneven but long term plans for the island sound like it will be much improved as time goes on. We will definitely be heading back over if we're ever back in Plymouth to see the next part of this island's history. In short though Views: 10/10 Staff: 10/10. There are toilets on the island but these are the only facilities I recommend bringing a snack and a drink with you or even better a cup of tea. The boat ride over is relatively short but pleasant and takes you past a lot of the landmarks.

Closed to the public when I visited unfortunately. Looked really intriguing and would’ve liked seeing inside but apparently the residents have closed it until March 2024. There was a footpath around the outside but it was quite treacherous - slippery after rain and occasionally going right up to the edge of the moat(?) around the fort which is at least a 15 foot drop. There is a fence around the fort but no guardrail by the moat(?).

This early Victorian Fort, operated by the Landmark Trust, is well worth making an effort to visit. They have open days throughout the year, but it is not open on a daily basis. They have live firing of cannons and rifles (all using blanks of course). There are tunnels and rooms aplenty, and two barrack rooms are presented in the 1890's and 1940's style. There are toilets but no catering facilities as such. They even have volunteers who dress up in Victorian clothing. UPDATE: Since posting this, CF now have catering. These are usually outside suppliers who operate from purpose built vans.

I booked to do the immersive yoga, it was really disappointing, first off it said when booking there would be spare mats, when we got there the teacher said they didn't have any but "it's not that bad to do on the floor". I told my yoga teacher friend this and she was disgusted. It's terrible for your knees to be on a hard floor and felt grotty in poses where our face was basically on the floor. The teaching itself was equally bad, it was mostly laying on the floor with the "teacher" speaking then some very slow movements that were badly explained, there was apparently some feedback on the teachers microphone that I didn't even notice until she seemed to totally lose concentration on what she was doing and turn it off. There was a point she tried to explain a pose but said she couldn't do it herself currently, I'm no yogi but that seems crazy to me. The set up is lovely, if there was a better teacher I think it could be great but definitely overpriced for what it is currently.

Plymouth Synagogue, located in Plymouth, Devon, England, is a significant historical site that showcases the enduring Jewish heritage in the region. Constructed in the 18th century, it stands as one of the oldest synagogues in the UK and serves as a testament to the rich cultural legacy and history of the local Jewish community.
Jerry is the custodian of this functional synagogue with a very long history, had a great time with the history of the shul, the area and of the people involved with it over the last 250 years. It's an insight into traditions, migrations and the fact that it wasn't damaged during the second world war amongst many other things
Tony K — Google review
The synagogue in Plymouth is the most welcoming place of worship I have ever been to and I’ve been to many. Jerry is the custodian and has a wealth of knowledge regarding its history and is always happy to give a tour. I highly recommend a visit.
Jurgen B — Google review
A beautiful synagoge. Grateful and happy for the warm welcome and the opportunity (after a phone call to Jerry) to admire the synagogue and attend a bit of the service. The Hebrew is beautiful. The still small community welcomes everyone and a helping hand will be most welcome. With few people and resources, the externally inconspicuous synagogue is kept so beautiful.
Charlotte D — Google review
While exploring the Barbican route and visiting local churches, we spotted this synagogue on our map and made an unplanned stop, hoping for a quick glimpse inside. From the outside, the building is remarkably unassuming, blending quietly into the historic street with nothing to hint at the treasure within. The synagogue wasn't officially open to the public, but as cleaning was underway, we asked if we might peek inside for just a moment. What happened next transformed our entire afternoon. Not only were we welcomed warmly, but Jerry, the custodian, offered us a complete tour that stretched well beyond an hour. His storytelling weaves together the history of Plymouth's Jewish community with the broader narrative of the city itself, creating a fascinating tapestry of local history that I never expected to discover. Jerry is an absolutely amazing person and a gifted storyteller who brings centuries of history to life with warmth, humor, and incredible knowledge. The interior of the synagogue is genuinely beautiful, a stark contrast to its modest exterior, with Georgian architectural details and a stunning gilded Torah ark. It's heartbreaking to learn that only a handful of members remain to maintain this historic space. If you're in Plymouth and have any interest in history, architecture, or simply hearing extraordinary stories told by someone who genuinely loves what they do, I cannot recommend this visit highly enough. Call ahead to book a tour with Jerry and set aside at least two hours for the experience. This unplanned detour became the unexpected highlight of our day in Plymouth. Jerry - We can't thank you enough! Toda Raba

Beautiful synagogue with a fascinating history. If you can go on a tour (email the caretaker, Jerry), I highly, highly recommend it. Jerry's tour is incredibly interesting and well-researched, and gives an excellent overview of not only the history of Plymouth and the Jews who lived there, but Jewish life in England during different periods. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit!

Jerry is a historian and a wonderful narrator of the history of Plymouth and it’s synagogue. Interesting and fascinating stories. The building is a gem.

Our Curious Club enjoyed the most interesting and informative visit to Plymouth Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Britain. Hidden away in St Catherine's Street it is one of only two buildings in this street to survive the bombings in the second world war. Inside, it is beautiful and feels peaceful. Our very knowledgeable and good humoured host, Jerry Sibley, taught us so many things, not only about the synagogue and the Jewish religion, but about the history of Plymouth through the ages. Thank you so much, Jerry. Certainly, well worth a visit.
Helen A — Google review
I am a forensic psychoanalyst, and I am neuro-divergent. The synagogue is okay, but some members were very dismissive of my views and symptoms, and I was marginalised in a cruel way. I don't recommend women, particularly those with mental health vulnerabilities, to visit. I reported the synagogue as it did not have policies required by the authorities. I was left alone, disconnected, and lonely.

Barbican Theatre is a great theatre for the actual show. All seats are great, and the curtain wall is epic. That being said, it’s so confusing to navigate the Barbican in general, and there are not many solid food options nearby. Always arrive early if you’ve never been here because signage is so-so, and you WILL get lost navigating the expanse of the Barbican.

I never knew this was here! At first, I thought the sound of a Thai restaurant being (seemingly) connected to a theatre could be very hit or miss, but I was pleasantly surprised with how good this place was after I visited with a few friends! B Bar is definitely one of the best Thai restaurants that I've been to, and I've been to quite a few! The food was excellent, my panang curry was very tasty & had the perfect level of spice to it The spring rolls were some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant & really reminded me of my mother's home made ones! The staff were also lovely which is always a bonus! All in all, I would definitely recommend giving this place a try!

West How Park – Review To enjoy the rides inside, you need to purchase tokens – £2 per token. There are small amusement rides like bumper cars, bumper boats, a mini excavator for scooping gravel, and a small bouncy trampoline. It’s suitable for children around 3 to 5 years old. My 4-year-old son had a great time! However, there was only one staff member selling tokens, so for rides like the bumper boats, you need to get on and unhook the boat yourself. That said, because it wasn’t crowded and there were no queues, three of us had lots of fun playing freely in the bumper car area. And no entrance fee is needed there ! Next to it, there’s a small public playground. Outside, on the grassy area, there’s a mini train ride and a large inflatable bouncy area. However, these require tokens from a different operator, and they’re also £2 per token. There’s a small café nearby where you can buy ice cream, hot dogs, and other snacks. Overall, it’s a great place for young kids around 3–4 years old! We had a lovely time. Just make sure to check their closing times – we missed it at the first day as it had already closed. On the second day, we went earlier and got to enjoy everything!
Christy H — Google review
Great place to go with the kids. Gus honey bun train is fantastic for the little ones. This train is historical has been there for over 40 years. Also located in the park is an adventure playground. Tokens need to be purchased for most of the rides and the trampolines located with in it. Great field area for picnics and also has a cafe and ice cream stand near by.

The Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, previously known as the Plymouth Naval Base Museum, is a maritime museum that showcases the history of The Dockyard and Plymouth's significant support for the Royal Navy since 1300, including its role in major conflicts like World Wars. The center features interactive exhibits and a submarine display depicting the dockyard's involvement with the Royal Navy. Run by knowledgeable volunteers, it offers insightful discussions about the exhibits and operates on a donation basis.
A thoroughly fascinating place crammed full of memorabilia and ephemera about the Royal Navy and the dockyard at Devonport. It's a surprisingly large place, with exhibits over several floors and across different buildings. What it lacks in slick modern presentation it more than makes up with heart and enthusiastic volunteers who are more than happy to talk and explain the exhibits.

The model ships get biggER and BIGGER as you go round. No sub available in August 2024, but there is a fully working periscope through you can look across Plymouth, pick a target and shout 'Close torpedo tubes' & 'Fire!!' At least an hour's fun and education.

There is nice reception area where you can get tour guide of the centre. It is fascinating to see the historical exhibits presented by passionate and very knowledgeable volunteers. Only problem is lack of signs on the main road to point you to right place. Just a short drive from Plymouth city centre this beach is the perfect day out. Good for swimming, walking, running, or just enjoying the beach. Very lucky with the weather - it looked stunning, views of the breakwater and Rame peninsula. Parking instructions are clear and reasonably priced for the day. To get to the beach, you have to climb down a lot of steps, which are rather steep. However, I was forewarned about the steep walk down but hadn’t factored in. Stunning cove at Bovisand. Sadly you can't park in the holiday park behind the beach, which feels a little mean of them and would be a definite revenue generator for them, but I guess they are protecting the privacy of their residents. Access is easier from the Bovisand (eastern side) down a gently sloping path. Its a steep walk down from the car park on the western side. No facilities at the beach, hence the lower rating. Presumably the holiday park wouldn't allow you to use theirs.

A delightful grown up 'nook' in which to rest and refresh your enthusiasm. Buy a pastie and sit in peace to enjoy it here. Stone benches to sit at for your picnic and shade from the Summer sun, though it is a bit cold in Winter. Access is by a discrete door from the top or off New Street just back from the harbour side. Toilets are on the Quay. This is a small garden in the Elizabethan style so nothing much for children to do if bored. Set over several levels there are steps to contend with so not really wheelchair accessible.

Absolutely GORGEOUS little find. I've lived here for 4.5 years now (after visiting for 27) and have never visited until yesterday. It's like a magical secret that Plymouth has kept well hidden for the sake of preservation and better still; mystery. It took my breath away when I first saw it. Due to its secretive nature it remains clean and unspoilt by those who may not appreciate historic hide aways such as this. The little arch way makes for a romantic kiss from your partner underneath it and welcomes you to explore the carvings etched into the walls (see image 2 of the ship). It backs onto some of the most historic buildings in Plymouth on the famous Barbican which literally means 'fortitude' and to know surprise given how well everything is protected and preserved. Highly recommend visiting this mysterious and yet welcoming suntrap of a garden where you will learn of its and the surrounding areas history!

Located in Plymouth, Devon, the Bridging the Tamar Visitor Centre is a new and free attraction that offers an informative look at the Tamar Bridge and the Royal Albert Bridge. These two impressive structures connect Devon and Cornwall over the River Tamar. The visitor center opened in 2019 and provides historical insights into these bridges, which were built in the 1960s and 1850s respectively.
This is a small but very full and interesting exhibition about the building of both the Albert Bridge by Brunel and the present day Tamar road bridge. There is free parking and it is free to enter the exhibition. There is a small coffee van next to the car park which was very busy when we were there. We combined the visit with a walk across the bridge and back. There are some fantastic views from the bridge.

Arrived by train at Saltash station. The walk back across the Tamar bridge is as advertised at about 15mins, is a nice walk and provides some good views. The visitor centre is well signposted, was clean and tidy. We attended on a day when there was a school trip there, although timed it just right that the group was at lunch. The displays are pretty good, with a fair amount of history of the area and other designs for what became of the Royal Albert Bridge. There are a couple of bits from the renovation of the bridge and a bell from a previous ferry. Probably spent 45mins - 1hr there. Once you have read all of the displays there isn't much more to look at. It looks more oriented to children as there are a few options on building the different types of bridges, CCTV camera station and period clothing to try on. There was not anyone around to ask questions etc..., But they were probably taking a break at the same time as the school party. Disappointed that there was no cafe or gift shop of any sort, there are a couple of guides available but with a sign saying to speak to someone or order online. There are some cafes in Saltash but on the day they all turned out to be full and so cut the day short and got back on the train.

Plymouth Life Centre is a top-notch fitness and swimming facility in Plymouth, offering a wide range of activities for visitors. Additionally, it features aquatic facilities that are second to none. Visitors can also enjoy group exercise programs in three dedicated studios and grab a bite at the on-site cafe.
We used the pool as a family of 6 and really enjoyed ourselves. All the staff were extremely nice and helpful and the cost was very reasonable, I say this because travel up and down the country and regularly visit other pools that are far more expensive. I am definitely gonna try and visit again during my stay in Plymouth, thanks guys for a great experience

Could be great, but consistently disappoints. Almost every weekend we come with our children to play in the kid’s pool and slides. If you go before 12pm the small kids pool is half size, due to lessons. Over half the time when we visit (at the weekends), the flumes are closed. Either a fault or ‘someone called in sick’ and they can’t staff it…. Not to mention the ‘jacuzzi’ and fountain are rarely switched on. When you pay for something it’s nice to actually get it. Today 3 of the pool showers were out of service. The adult swimming lanes are good but can be busy. The gym is well stocked but prior to COVID used to have a sauna, however they have cut that cost now and it’s gone for good. The sports halls are good. And the cafe fairly reasonable. Much like Plymouth, it has the ingredients to be great. But is mismanaged.
Patrick G — Google review
The gym needs maintenance, it has worn out machines, and the cost of membership is still greater than competitors. Of course the pictures did not cover all the sports equipment because some of them were used but all of them are like these in the pictures or worse

Can't say if it is any good or not, as failed at the first hurdle. Tried to book a swimming session and had to complete the usual pointless "log on", with question, such as date of birth?? and passwords. Why? Then you get to the unfathomable list of choices, but picked one with a time and went with it. It said that there was 65 spaces, so went on to book. When I got to payment, it was "FULL" WTH. Went back and picked a different time and this time got through to payment section, put in card details and got the time wheel of doom. Tried again with different card. Same result. So went old school and rang them to book (twice). No one answers the phone...... Left message and as of yet no one has called me back after an hour. Given up on the health kick and off to the pub, as a lot less hassle.

An inspirational resource. Some amazing swimming instructors including Jordan, Linda and Charlotte. I’m a ‘senior’ just starting and they all help, motivate, and coach us. Improving every time. Thanks. And to the lifeguards and cleaning staff. And cafe.

Excellent installations, clean, friendly people, plenty to do. The best part is the swimming pool. So many options

Fantastic facility. The new gates however… are dangerous, not fit for purpose, and nearly trap children most weeks

One of the best pools in the UK! Plymouth Life Centre boasts a full 10 lane 50m Olympic size pool, an Olympic diving pool, dryside training facilities, a sauna and steam room. This is a fantastic facility and very competitively priced. The facility is very well kept with staff really stepping up during COVID to ensure high cleanliness standards were maintained. Staff are always friendly, welcoming and professional. Would highly recommend to all!

Visitors praise the friendly staff and fun courses, though it can get busy on weekends.
First time experience. 2 different courses we did the temple one. Small arcade upstairs with seating for food and a drink also. We did the family pass 34 quid for 2 adults, 2 kids. The courses seem pretty new and everything is clean and tidy. If your looking for something to waste couple of hrs this was pretty good would recommend.

Can’t remember how many times I’ve been here, but every time I did I had loads of fun. If you are in Plymouth and you are looking for a fun day out with your friends or family make sure you check them out. It is also quite a nice activity for a date night as well. They have two different courses to choose from and both are equally fun and challenging. Staff are always super friendly and helpful. It is also a budget option and not excessively expensive as well. You don’t need to make a booking before, you can just walk in and buy yourself a round. They also have a cocktail bar upstairs with more games which is quite nice as well. They do a bottomless offer with a round of golf and bottomless cocktails which is a really good deal.

We did the jungle course. We love crazy golf, but it was expensive for the layout of the course. It's not in the least bit crazy, very mundane holes, that had a few undulating layouts and tree stumps, but quite dull. Expensive at £27 for one adult and child
Cat A — Google review
Simple, not very challenging. Great for small children. Arcade games weren't working. Couldn't get money back (it was my sons) due to 'outside owners.' offered the money back off our drinks bill. Lighting wasn't ideal. Pretty dark with really bright spotlights dotted about.

Very good, about an hour for the size of the complex is about right I think. Most recent visit was a warm summers evening (5pm session) and it was hot! Would definitely benefit from additional large industrial fans (currently only 1) or installing AC. Staff attentive as ever, nice friendly family atmosphere.

Such an amazing place for the grandchildren! The staff are amazing and friendly. The only one downside they have been having glitches with online bookings on the 30 day pass but a simple phone and it’s done, certainly not going to knock them down on that…thank you for keeping the kids so entertained

Rip off to be honest. £16 for me, my husband, my 3 year old and 5 year old for two hours. My 5 year old wasn’t allowed in the under 3s area so quickly got bored of the same small area, no way we could have spent the full two hours here. Lovely play areas and clean but it’s not enough to keep the kids entertained. Especially as price did not include trampolines. Weak nasty coffee that I couldn’t finish, my partner had black coffee and even that was weak.

Love it in here! It reminds me of an old style canteen. A large airy room with tables and chairs and a serving hatch. You don't need anything to detract from the wonderful view over looking the river. The coffee is very good and at £2.75 a cup, you can't beat it. The staff are friendly and accommodating. We often drop in after a swim, with dogs, baggage etc.

Location is fantastic. We came here to sample the delights of the cafe. We were very lucky as we got to spend an extra 30 mins here in a hectic queue while our drinks were prepared. The time spent preparing the tea and coffee just shows how dedicated the staff are to providing quality beverages.

Probably the most expensive tea and coffee I've ever had. £6.75 for an espresso and a black tea. Won't be going back for another round. This is despite the interesting view from the glass-fronted balcony overlooking the ferry pontoon.

2 days of diving from their largest boat, Size Matters. Loads of space for at least 12 divers. The skipper, Ben and his crew, were excellent. Both were very knowledgeable and the fact that they were divers too clearly showed. Fully set up for open circuit and CCR and deep technical diving. I have no reservations about recommending them and would happily use them again

Me and my daughter came here for a birthday party. First time we have been and won't be our last. She thoroughly enjoyed herself. The staff are very freindly and helpfull aswell. Nice clean place and the lunch from the small café was delicious! I would recommend!

The kids loved it! The cafe was reasonably priced and we had a great time. The staff were always helpful. Needs more obvious signing for parking for first time users and there was no one manning downstairs reception which meant we had to try and nab someone upstairs to find out what to do but once that was done, it was all plain sailing! Really happy and will be returning
Aimee M — Google review
Visited clip n climb today, it was very quiet. We were the only ones in there but can't say I would return in a hurry. The most interesting looking climbing activities required you to pay extra when you have already paid more than enough to get in.
Martyn S — Google review
We visited for the mini mountaineers+ session with my 3 year old son & 5 year old nephew. The staff were great, very helpful and friendly. After the extensive safety briefing, the staff then circled around the climbing areas offering advice, helping where necessary, and generally being great. One of them saw my 3 year old was struggling with the confidence to trust the rope & after he had climbed to return to the mat safely and so he demonstrated it by climbing him self and falling back with the rope safely returning him to the ground, acts like this made the difference. The selection of walls was great, the fact as an adult you were able to be inside the climbing area to help and support your toddler was great. Would highly recommend and this is something we will do regularly. By the end of the session my son was absolutely loving it, he went from being nervous to confident during this one session.

What an incredible space, but even more - the staff. It was amazing to see how much they do care about their customers. The management are incredibly knowledgeable about the safety and mechanics of climbing, and make it truly safe for any age. Seeing a little girl in a wheelchair getting a chance to climb with a manager's help, and seeing the progress of kids during the SEN hour on Sunday mornings - it just goes to show this is more than climbing.

Hoe Park, located in Plymouth, England, is a popular cliffside green space offering breathtaking views of Plymouth Sound. It is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to unwind and engage in outdoor activities. The park features a lighthouse, a statue of Sir Francis Drake, war memorials, and various sculptures including the famous Plymouth Man. Adjacent to Hoe Park is the National Marine Aquarium which showcases diverse marine life.
A beautiful and expansive public space with wonderful views, from a belvedere, of ships in Plymouth Sound and a coastline stretching from Devon in the east to Cornwall in the west. I reached it by walking up the hill from the Mayflower Steps Memorial in the Barbican (it takes about 10 minutes), and then climbing some steps beside the Victorian colonnade. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse - it's £5 for an adult, £2.50 for a child - for even better views. There's a bronze statue of Sir Francis Drake looking out to sea, and several commemorative plaques and memorials, the most impressive being the Plymouth Naval Memorial dedicated to around 23,000 British and Commonwealth sailors who were lost at sea during WW1 and WW2. There's also a pretty sensory garden and, very appropriately for this location, a bowling club! Plenty of seating, and lots of grassy space for exercise and picnics. There's also a little café, and toilets, at the back of the park. It's worth spending some time here before going off to explore the city.
Valerie H — Google review
Lovely park with a lot of history and a great place to take your dogs for a walk too. There's plenty of nearby parking for abled and disabled drivers and a few places to stop for an ice cream or a quick bite to eat, but if you prefer, you could take a picnic and sit on one of the many to enjoy the views.
Debbie D — Google review
Lovely area for a walk / Picnic. Close to the city centre and walking distance from the Barbican. Great view of the shipping channels into Plymouth.
Anseroy B — Google review
Absolutely beautiful and one of my favourite places to spend time. You can see the sea, the boats, Drake's Island, and on a clear day all the way out to the horizon. It’s such a peaceful spot, whether you’re walking, sitting with a coffee, or just taking in the fresh air. The park itself is very clean and well kept, with plenty of space for everyone. Families, couples, runners, and dog walkers all share the area in a really friendly way. There’s always something going on. Sometimes live music, small events, or just people enjoying the sunshine. The lighthouse adds so much character, and it’s great for photos too. It’s also close to cafés, ice cream stands, and restaurants, so you can easily spend a whole afternoon there. The atmosphere is relaxing, and it feels safe even in the evening when the lights come on along the seafront. If you’re visiting Plymouth or even if you live nearby, Hoe Park is definitely a must see. It’s one of those places that makes you slow down and appreciate how beautiful this city really is.

Five stars, as my wife has a blue badge, and there is free parking right in the middle of it all on the Hoe Promenade. It's a great place anyway, but all on street parking without a blue badge will cost you. We had no distance to walk really, and got some magnificent views of all the yachts and naval ships. There were lots of people taking advantage of the Tinside Lido down below. Our day there was on a beautiful sunny September afternoon which obviously makes everything so much better. We managed to fit in seeing the Mayflower Steps Memorial & Around the Barbican area too. Well worth the visit if you are in the area.

While popular among dog walkers, it can get muddy in winter. The River Plym flows from Dartmoor to Plymouth Sound, and the woods are just a bus ride away in Plympton.
One of my favourite places in Plymouth to go for a good nature walk. Lots of wild garlic at the minute, with bluebells & peregrines to come soon! Whether you're exploring the woodland paths, enjoying a refreshing paddle in the shallow river, or dog walking, this spot provides a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts. Excellent destination for a weekend family outing. My children loved stone skimming across the water and spotting local wildlife. With free parking available on-site (at your own risk), Plymbridge Woods is a place we’ll definitely be returning to, especially in summer☀️. the best walk for kids, dogs, the whole family. either on a bike or just a good walk through the woods no matter the season- always something exciting to do for the kids. plus the best thing is you can end up at the pub at the end of the trail and feel like you've deserved it:) just be aware that are lots of experienced cyclists that sometimes are whizzing through- mind the kids and dogs. good fun to take the plym rail for a short journey- great for the kids
Iuliana C — Google review
Plymbridge Woods is truly one of the most serene and enriching places to visit in the South West. Steeped in history, this beautiful woodland follows the path of an old railway line, once vital for transporting granite and timber. The remnants of industrial heritage—like the iconic viaduct and old railway bridges—add a unique historical charm to your journey through the woods. What makes Plymbridge Woods especially special is its peaceful atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a quiet morning walk, a family cycling adventure, or just letting your dog roam in nature, the space offers something for everyone. The walking and cycling trails are well-maintained and meander alongside the River Plym, offering stunning views and the occasional sighting of deer or peregrine falcons. It’s a haven for locals and visitors alike, and a perfect example of how natural beauty and local history can come together to provide a space for relaxation, exercise, and reflection. A must-visit for nature lovers, cyclists, walkers, and dog owners.

Absolutely Enchanting woodlands with walks along the river. Lots of different routes to take and free parking. It's located near the historic Mayflower Steps, Tinside Lido, Plymouth Hoe Lighthouse, and The Hoe.
This was our first visit to this amazing site, but won't be the last. The warden was so helpful and enabled us to setup on one of the many beautiful pitches looking out to sea. With careful planning (the bus service is quite tricky!) , we were able to walk the beautiful coast path from Plymouth to Salcombe. This is an excellent campsite. We had checked with the warden about arriving late due to ferry times and he was most helpful. Home Park Stadium, the home of Plymouth Argyle FC, is not just a venue for football matches but also transforms into an exciting music venue during close-season pop concerts. The stadium offers a versatile space that caters to diverse musical tastes with its stadium-sized concerts. While parking at the stadium is limited, there are ample off-street parking options in the local area without permit restrictions. Additionally, visitors can enjoy traditional food options and explore the new Fan Zone featuring live music and food.

This football stadium isn’t a bad stadium but there are upgrades and renovations that need to be made. However the mayflower stand is very up to date and if you’re looking for view this is a great place to sit as it offers hospitality.

ground located at the top of a hill, but quite near the train station. If your a home fan there's plenty of music and undercover drinking areas, but being an away fan, we was ushered to the away end with no outside stadium food available. once inside there is the normal food outlet bar serving pasties etc and beer which is available in 2 pint plastic containers. Think these were available for 3 types of cider/beer for £9/10. view from away end is undercover, and ok with no obstructions blocking the view..Players entrance onto pitch is in the corner by away stand and was unusual but good.

An incredible experience, decent sized ground with friendly welcome. A very cold day, but started to warm up when the sun came out in the second half. Having arrived very early, we avoided the rain, which was a relief. There was plenty of noise throughout the match and the home supporters are very loyal. An enjoyable experience, happy that this will be my last time going to a football ground. The pre match pastie and hot chocolate was excellent.

My first time at a football match here and I loved it. Super friendly staff, great crowd and fans ranging from young kids to grandparents.

Korev on draught and the pasties were excellent, one of the better away day fan experiences.

Outside the stadium is a large free carpark, walking to the away end could be dangerous as you have to walk Infront of home fans, and then go down a path with no police or stewards heading down to a steep path going up into the away stand, could be dangerous for some traveling fans. The path heading towards the turnstiles could be steep for disabled fans but inside the stadium there are no complaints from me, a nice small stadium for the Championship.

A great stadium! Home to the mighty Plymouth Argyle and the Green Army 💚
