Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Park
Schloss Hellbrunn is a Renaissance villa with beautifully landscaped gardens, famous for its trick water fountains and folklore museum. Built by Markus Sittikus von Hohenems in the early 17th century, this baroque palace was designed as a day residence without bedrooms. The estate is known for its 'Watergames,' where unsuspecting guests are squirted with water from hidden fountains.
Beautiful place to visit, main attraction is the trick fountains that you can only visit in groups every 30 min. The smaller interior can be visited any time and is not timed. Be mindful that you will most likely get wet or surprise your friends and keep it secret. I recommend being there when they open so you guarantee to be the 1st or 2nd group

Had a great time visiting this gorgeous museusm / castle / park! Two things were particularly great: the Trick Fountains and the Children Playground as we were visiting with our 3yo toddler. We will definitely be back for the playground during our stay in Salzburg !
Hugo P — Google review
The trick fountains was an amazing experience. We didn’t expect to have spent so much time there but we are glad to have had. Lots to see. The palace was very interesting as well.
Helen L — Google review
We had a wonderful day here, the number 25 bus takes about half an hour from central Salzberg an drops you right by the entrance. Hellbrunne consists of a stunning palace, gardens and estate in the mannerist style. The surprise fountain garden is great fun but do expect to get a bit wet. The folk museum, palace and fountain garden are part of a 15 euro ticket which is good value. The water parterre gardens, stone theatre cut out of the rock, the wonderful views over the city and mountains, arboretum and playground are all free. There is a good cafe too.
Tim S — Google review
Must see attraction reflecting Austrian culture and finesse’ each sculpture, Fountain and Artwork is exemplary and enjoyable for a connoisseur. Reaching there is easy too. Just take bus 25 from HH central bus station. Have a great day when u visit… Best season between April to September.
S K — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit to Hellbrunn Palace. The palace itself is beautiful, but the best part for me was the trick fountains—hidden jets that surprise you when you least expect it—and the water-powered moving sculptures that come alive as you walk by. It was playful and refreshing, and made the whole place feel magical
Dimitri B — Google review
The palace was built early 17th century in the early baroque style as a pleasure palace for day use in summer only and therefore had no bedrooms. It was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. You start your visit with a tour of the trick garden with all sorts of hidden waterfountains that the Bishop liked to use on his guests by surprise. This is a timeslot entry so after you get your ticket go there first. At the start you can have your photo taken which you can buy at the end of this tour. At the start you also get a language specific audio guide. You exit this part in the beautiful garden and can visit a museum inside the palace with interesting information about the Bishop
Seimen B — Google review
The kids enjoyed it so much. We wanted a nice place to pass our last day and this was it! Take the tour inside, give the kids the tour-guide and don't miss the chance to get wet! The kids wanted to do the tour twice! For the park bring a picnic basket with drinks. I hope that in the future the restaurants inside the castle will make a picnic menu.... this is idial. We walked around the duck pool and in the kids playground and it was awesome! We thought it will be 1-2 hours and we finished after 4! Need to say that the staff was so kind and helpful they become friends 🧡

Mine

Discover the fascinating Salzwelten Salzburg, Austria's largest show mine, where visitors can experience the historical significance of salt mining during Salzburg's princely era. Descend into the depths of the earth wearing a boilersuit and embark on a thrilling tour aboard a rickety train that navigates through narrow passageways, crosses into Germany, and includes an exhilarating 27m slide. Despite initial skepticism about visiting a mine, many have been impressed by the service and organization provided.
We had an amazing tour! This mine is 2600 years old and during the tour you ride sled trains, boats, slide down wooden slides, and get to learn a ton of interesting facts. My favorite part were the slides and the fact that you go so far and deep that you cross over the German border in the mountain and then back again to Austria. We were in a very large group, that I wish would have been smaller because it made it hard to hear at points. When you arrive you will put your personal items in free lockers, phones are allowed, and then will put on a full body outfit which will preserve your clothes and help you slide. The tour was in English and German, which was nice. Also it’s a steady 65 degrees down there but I would not dress too warmly because you will get warm walking around. Pricing is fair and the drive up the mountain to get to the location was a fun bonus as well. I honestly loved the tour and would recommend to anyone. It’s great for all ages too.
Zan L — Google review
Great experience and amazing tour. A must visit place when you are in salzburg. Great walk through of how mining evolved and lot of cool facts. The train and short boat ride inside the mine is a cool experience for kids. The slide inside the mine is highly recommended. It was very fun.
Satish V — Google review
We joined the 2:20 tour yesterday (20/8) and would like to appreciate the enthusiasm of and the interesting content shared by our tour guide (sorry I don’t know how to type his name). He really did a great job and we enjoyed it a lot!!!! This tour includes riding a miner’s cart (thanks for the extra legroom😆), getting to know more about the history of salt mining, riding a boat on the salt lake, and moreover sliding down over two long sliding boards. At the end of the tour, a small bottle of salt will be given. Can’t wait to try it when I back to my home!^^ The temperature inside is constantly 10 degree, yet I think a short t-shirt and a jacket with the clothings provided by the counter is already enough. All in all, the tour is engaging and worth joining (can’t believe we could experience that much in a tour of £34😭)!
Mango — Google review
A place you shouldn't miss when in Austria! Booked the tickets online and got an immediate confirmation. Such a fun experience for both adults and kids. For the tickets you pay, you get so much information about the saltmine. You'll get to enjoy that sled ride into the mine, walked through German border for a bit, slides and a little piece of souvenir at the end! The entire thing is about 2 hrs.
Syazwani — Google review
Have been to many attractions around the globe, and I have to say this place is the best! Super well done, the tour was wonderfully explained by the guide Alex in this photo. He was also very friendly to all the visitors and that made a difference from the unfriendly people we encountered in Vienna. Also the little salt souvenir at the end of the tour was such a thoughtful gift for visitors. Please keep up the good work!

Had a blast at the Salzburg Salt Mine! Fun slides, cool underground tunnels, and a fascinating look at salt mining history. Super entertaining and definitely worth a visit — highly recommend!
Egg T — Google review
A great experience from slides to boat trips to crossing borders, videos (4) and more. Everything is said in both German and English. You take a short train journey to the mine where we had a funny, knowledgeable, friendly tour guide round the mine. You watch a total of 4 videos - there is also an 8 minute film at the start that’s optional - everything is in German followed by English. This place is located on the border between Austria (Österreich) and Germany (Deutschland) and you cross the German border through the mines underground (no trouble at border control!). There are also two slides that you can use (or take the stairs if you don’t want to), the longest one is 42 metres. You can see your picture and speed afterwards! You also take a boat trip across the Salt Water Lake (this salt water is brine and is very salty, which you can try if you wish) You can spend money in the gift shop, but it’s quite expensive. You also get given a salt present at the end on your way back to the mine train entrance, where there is a wall you can write your name on and become famous! I was scared at first because I don’t like heights and the start may suggest it’s high but it’s all underground and it is great constantly switching between Germany and Austria. We didn’t have to wait and had bought tickets in advance (would recommend this), but we are a school group, so not sure what it would be like otherwise. An excellent tour lasting 90mins / 1hr 30mins (same length as ferry Dover to Calais), adventure and day out and I would highly recommend it.
Joseph M — Google review
Wooooow this trip is worth every cent and after the tour 34 euro sims really cheap. The tour lady is guiding you through the history off Salzwelten. You are driving on a small bench train inside the mountains and there is a small boat as well which you have to cross from one side to another. Everything was well explained and shown how was working before and how is working nowadays. The tour lasts 1.5 hour. You are supplied with their uniforms to avoid coldness because it is 10 degrees inside the mountain. So many things was shown on a projector inside the mountain. At one stage you will be crossing on a German side of a country. We were 1000 min deep in the mountain. Recommend everyone to visit it and get the full experience!!

Nice self standing museum.

Nice view into the old times, some things could be dome better for adults, but is a really nice experience and overview for the kids and families, with a nice projection at the beginning and a short walk through the village of the Celtic people

(Translated by Google) We booked tickets at short notice for a rainy day and were about 10 people in a group. We chose this mine because you are not allowed to take photos in the other mine in Berchtesgaden. First you take a train into the mountain. During the tour there are 2 miner's slides, one of which even measures the speed and takes photos (although these are quite expensive if you want to buy them). There is also a small boat ride on an underground lake. The guide was very nice and explained a lot. Multimedia stations with short videos and animations do the rest. We liked it very much. Other people's children in the group were also clearly having fun.

Hofbräu Kaltenhausen is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Austria, offering guided tours that allow visitors to witness every step of the brewing process, from hops to the finished product. The brewery uses top-quality ingredients to create its fantastic country beers. After the tour, guests can enjoy fresh beer and delicious meals at the attached brewpub. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make for a pleasant dining experience, with a varied menu and fair pricing.
We took a drive outside of Salzburg and happened upon Hofbräu Kaltenhausen. What a treat! This is a warm friendly place which has a great beer selection and some great food. They have been making beer here since 1475 and we enjoyed several different beers along with our dinner which did not disappoint. I ordered their Salzberger Bauenschmaus which had several types of pork meats, and my wife who is vegetarian had the Tennengauer Almkasspätzle a pasta covered in alpine cheese with roasted onions. Both were delicious meals. We had a wonderful relaxing evening.
Mike E — Google review
The food was made to order and was very tasty. The beer (we tried the Helles Original and a Weisse) was just right. The Gasthaus was laid out with various dining rooms to fit the guests. A large outdoor Biergarten accommodated guests enjoying the weather. They even have a e-bicycle charging station in the back.
Tom J — Google review
Can’t comment on the food, as we stopped in only for a beer. But, the beer was okay. The service was extremely slow despite being almost empty on a lovely warm day.
V B — Google review
Everything was fine but chaos in terms of staff (unsufficent number)
Matej M — Google review
This is the brewery, not a tap house. You have to schedule tours to view the brewery.
Tim C — Google review
A lot of customers and only two complaining waiters, even for beer need to wait long. But finally we manage to get them quicker than expected

Small and local and perfect. I'm here every time I go skiing in Piste Dürrnberg 5 minutes away from this microbrewery. Perfect beer in plenty of variety

We were a party of 6. 3 children 3 adults. Each of us had different dishes and we all loved the food! It is a very authentic Austrian restaurant with great beer and food for a fair price. The service is attentive and good. I can recommend this restaurant and we sure will return.

The Stille Nacht Museum Hallein in Austria was established to honor the origins of the famous Christmas carol 'Silent Night,' written in a nearby village in 1818. Originally located in Hallein Town Hall, it was moved to its current location in 1975. The museum offers insights into the life and times of Gruber, who composed the carol. Visitors can also explore a separate room with activities related to 'Silent Night' for children.
A small jewel of a museum dedicated to the life and music of Franz Xaver Gruber, and to the Christmas song, "Silent Night." Excellent layout and very well maintained. Certainly worth a visit, quick train ride from Salzburg. Spent two calming hours here.
Tonet — Google review
A must-visit museum if you're in Hallein or Salzburg! Though small, the museum is well-maintained and beautifully showcases the life and legacy of Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of the world-famous Christmas carol Silent Night. Entry is reasonably priced at €6, and there's no need to book tickets in advance. I would have appreciated English translations for the audio recordings to enhance the experience for international visitors.
Anuradha P — Google review
I didn't know that composer of Silent Night worked in Hallein. Franz Xaver Gruber worked here and on the second floor of the museum we found furniture and objects from his life. His grave is in the square in front of the house. I loved it!

Zinkenlifte Hallein / Bad Dürrnberg is a charming little ski resort that offers a delightful escape for both winter and summer enthusiasts. With just two lifts, it provides an intimate atmosphere perfect for families and beginners looking to enjoy skiing without the overwhelming crowds of larger resorts. In winter, visitors can indulge in snowshoeing and winter hiking, while the warmer months invite adventurers to explore scenic biking trails and experience the thrill of a toboggan run.
Small ski area with good pricing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, a much better experience than compared to the larger areas. Good for beginners and people with children who want somewhere quieter and smaller that doesn't overwhelm.

My favorite summer flitzer in the area! It has the best view by far! The lift up is a bit scary if you afraid of heights. You have no ground, just legs hanging in the air. But it’s worth it! The flitzer is great, easy to control. The view is truly stunning! We loved it!

Nestled in the scenic Keltenblitz range near Bad Durrnberg, Sommerrodelbahn "Keltenblitz" offers an exhilarating experience for visitors. Accessible via a chairlift, this winding metal toboggan track provides a roller coaster-like ride down the Alpine slope. The breathtaking views from the top and the option to control speed make it an enjoyable adventure for both adults and children.
This was our favourite thing we did in Austria! It was a bit of a journey from Salzburg but with the free trial pass we definitely think it was worth the journey!! me and my mum absolutely loved this and can’t wait to come back

👍🏻 One of the most beautiful summer slides I have tried in Austria. 👍🏻 The prices are suitable for the length of the cable car, slide and panoramic view. ⚠️ There is a restaurant on the top with toilets. ⚠️ You should be careful while riding and getting off the cable car because it is fast. ⚠️ The slide level is suitable for all ages.
KHALIFA A — Google review
This was a great activity! The chair lift takes you up then you take the Toboggan down. It was very fast! At the top there is a cafe/restaurant Good to note is it cannot run in the rain. There is plenty of free parking. You can by tickets when you arrive and pay by card and cash

It was a fun and interesting experience. The place is picturesque and more than wonderful. Climbing to the top of the mountain was fun, and descending the slopes with the carts was an exciting experience.

Highly recommend this one. Nice long lift and the ride is a lot of fun down. Very nice little restaurant on the top. Very nice view from the tables.

Great activity! The slides and the view were both fantastic. Even though we visited in October and it was quite cloudy, the view was truly incredible during the moments the clouds parted!

Fun day trip from Salzburg. Take the s3 train from Salzburg Hbf to Hallein, and then bus 41 which drops you right in front of the entrance. Wait times are short during weekdays. Price is 18 euro pp with chairlift and tobbogan slide. For those willing to walk up it's 12 euro. Chairlift takes ten mins going up. The ride itself is fun. Approx 3-4 mins slide down with epic views of the mountains/city. Worth the visit, kids would love it too.

Convinced my husband to go to this. He wasn't too keen as we had done something like this in Luzezn. However, this was in a league of its own, he loved it!

Specialty Museums
The Keltenmuseum Hallein, also known as the Celtic Museum Hallein, is a significant attraction in Europe that offers a captivating insight into the culture and history of the Celtic people. Founded in 1970 by Dr. Gerhard Trnka, an Austrian archaeologist and historian, this museum boasts an extensive collection of Celtic artifacts. Situated in Hallein, Austria, renowned for its rich Celtic heritage and archaeological sites, the museum provides an immersive experience for history enthusiasts.
One of the best museums I have visited. I loved the way they used technology and innovative methods to present the storyline. It clearly demonstrates how archaeological findings should be displayed in a museum. During my visit, the exterior of the museum was under renovation, but it did not cause any disruption to visitors. This is a children friendly museum and have a good children area. The entrance fee was €9.50. The museum shop had a good collection of items. Finally, the staff was very friendly.

The museum is housed in the former salt registrar building (historisches Salzregistraturgebäude) which housed the records and archives related to the city's profitable salt mining and saline operations. When I visited the museum the outside was being renovated but inside it was business as usual. There are three floors with exhibits of which two are dedicated to the culture of the Celts who lived in the area between 800 BCE and 15BCE when they were integrated in the Roman Empire. They specifically lived in Dürrnberg near Hallein which was one of the most important Celtic centers in Central Europe, thanks to its rich salt deposits. The top floor is dedicated to local history of the past centuries and lo and behold there was a painting of Markus Sittikus who had his summer palace Hellbron built.
Seimen B — Google review
I was a little disappointed. I expected something much more grandiose regarding the celtic culture. After Stuttgarts and Nurembergs Landesmuseum, Hallein is pale. And the weird opening hours (5 to 8 pm) don't make things better.
Frederic L — Google review
This was an amazing experience! So many items and such an innovative display! Samples from Iron Age Cemetery, Celtic art, life, religion and culture, burial chambers, jewellry. They even had a room where children could play archaeology and with brushes they could try to unravel a skeleton in the sand. And another floor was designated to the local archbishop rooms. Beautiful panelled rooms with amazing paintings.
Maria G — Google review
A large museum about the whole history of the area, not just celts (though most and best artifacts do come from that era). Highly recommended for history enthusiasts. The museum has many interactive equipment and could be very interesting for children. The staff is friendly and helpful. The two downsides are lacking, or rather confusing parking place. Also there was a lack of books and literature in English language to buy in the museum store, which is regrettable. A must-visit for history buffs in the area around Salzburg.
Martin M — Google review
Just visited the shop for a short time to get a gift for my friend, the employee at the desk was very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. I will for sure come back for a proper visit. Also attended it once to speak with tattoo masters from Ireland and Scotland, who traveled for an event here - wish the museum would organise it again some day!
Who C — Google review
A well presented exhibition about the Celts, easy to understand and informative. I enjoyed even the "experimental workshops" meant for children. Not many people.

(Translated by Google) Update from August 2024 Still a beautiful place Green fee currently 90 euros I really like this course, especially the spacious first 9 holes. The second nine plays directly towards the Bad Gastein backdrop and is much shorter and more compact. Nestled in the wonderful natural scenery, there is nothing better. You have to walk a few meters, but the place is easily walkable. Green fee at 79 fair, friendly secretariat Deduction only because it has already happened several times: You go from 9 to 10 and suddenly you have a few new flights in front of you that only play 9 holes and start here.

(Translated by Google) We visited the Moby Dick Kiosk quite early today. Shortly after opening, we wanted to order several coffees and were unfortunately very rudely informed by the kiosk employee that one of the coffee machines was broken and one had not yet been switched on (after the shop had opened). This can happen in a business that generates a large portion of its income from coffee. After a 32-minute wait, we were finally able to order our coffee. The employee did not apologize, and while we were waiting, we noticed that he was also snapping at other customers who wanted to order coffee. We also wondered whether the man's T-shirt, which showed a naked banana with pixelated stripes in the banana's "private area" as a print, was appropriate attire for a public swimming pool with many children of all ages as guests. As a mother of small children, I unfortunately do not share this sense of humor.

(Translated by Google) Contrary to other reviews, I have to honestly admit that I was not at all satisfied. The staff tried hard and the location was nice, but the breakfast or brunch was the worst I've ever eaten. The bread was chewy, as if it had been baked the day before. The toppings for the rolls were almost all the same, everything was vegetarian, except for the sausage plate (but there was only sausage and ham on it that I would never buy myself)! And in the end I paid almost €90 for two people. Price/performance doesn't fit at all. Maybe I was just unlucky with the appointment? Had a bad day, so to speak. Unfortunately, I have to state that it was the first and last time that I will visit this location.
