Convent
Perched atop a hill in the picturesque town of Tomar, Portugal, the Convent of Christ is a stunning Roman Catholic convent adorned with intricate Manueline-style sculptures and medieval cloisters. The convent is part of a cluster of monuments located on one of the highest points in the city. Accessible via Avenida Dr Vieira Guimaraes, this historical site offers visitors a journey back in time to explore its rich connection to the legendary Knights Templar.
This Castle and Monastery is immense, truly felt like I was in the 1600's. It takes about 2.5-3.0 hours to see all of it. Incredible, and a must see! Need very sturdy walking shoes and good mobility. There are cafe's and good parking near the entrance. 100% worth the $15 entry. Walking the castle walls was grand.

Went here on a whim and we were amazed. Such a beautiful place and so much history. If you are in the area or a drives away it is very much worth the trip. So impressive and the history and structures just can’t be described. It is a bit of a maze but it makes it all that more exciting and impressive. Go down all the stairs walk all the hallways. August 2025 prices were €15 per person and there is a restaurant to eat at. The castle de Tomar can be visited for free at the moment at a separate entrance but only to walk the property no visiting inside.
Judy W — Google review
Beautiful place, enormous building, rich history. Parking is somewhat limited, we parked at a second parking lot a bit further from the castle, but had to return early because we only paid for 3h of parking and didn't want to get a ticket. First reason for deducting 1 star: signalisation could be better, a toilet stop in the middle would be useful because it took a while to walk all the way from the middle to the end (not yet realizing how massive the place is) and even more time to get back to my family because it can be a maze of corridors, rooms and stairs. Second reason: we ate a pizza at the restaurant near the end and, while it was not bad, we paid more for that pizza (17.5€ each) than we did for any other food during our entire 9-day stay in Portugal, including a fancy restaurant. Finally, a minor remark: the place is far from accessible to wheelchairs or strollers, there are stairs everywhere. I'm not deducting stars for that because it would ruin the place to build elevators everywhere, but people need to know before they plan a visit.
Jef L — Google review
I was wrong when I thought Tomar was a small town! The city is definitely worth a visit for its historical beauty and Templar influence, especially if you visit during the medieval festival season. As for the Convent of Christ, it's a visit that can take more than two hours; the building is quite large, and together with the castle, you can easily spend an entire day visiting it. In addition to the impressive architecture, you can enjoy an exhibition on medieval clothing, there are countless spaces to take an immense number of artistic photographs, and the light there is wonderful. It also has gardens and is pet-friendly. The service at the entrance is fast, you can use the 52-pass for Portuguese residents with your NIF, and of course, there's a 50% discount for those over 65 (general admission €15). I encourage you to visit the souvenir shop inside because it has very good prices, compared to the shop at the exit. They also have a cafe inside, which I enjoyed more than the one outside the building. Definitely a must visit in Portugal!
Maryfer H — Google review
The Convento de Cristo in Tomar is one of those places that feel suspended in time, a stone labyrinth where the echoes of the Knights Templar still linger. Originally built as the headquarters of the Templars in Portugal, it later became the home of the Order of Christ, carrying that same air of mystery and quiet power. The main church, the Charola is extraordinary, its circular design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a direct architectural link between Portugal and the Holy Land. Inside, the space glows with medieval frescoes, gold leaf, and a sense of sacred geometry that feels spiritual and beautiful. The rest of the convent unfolds like a dream of stone, cloisters upon cloisters, Manueline windows crawling with rope and coral motifs, and corridors that seem to hum with history. You can almost imagine the Templar knights walking through at dusk, the weight of centuries in their silence. It’s not just a monument; it’s a story carved in limestone, blending faith, art, and mystery. Whether you’re drawn by history or atmosphere, Convento de Cristo is one of the most powerful and beautiful places in Portugal. Well worth the visit when in Tomar.
Varto B — Google review
We were only in Tomar for a single evening en route elsewhere, but visited the Convent (and the accompanying Castle) for a few hours before we left the town the next morning. It was a good activity that we enjoyed! Added with the walk around the (exterior) Castle, it was as couple hours well spent. We bought tickets to the Convent online in advance so basically just walked right in. The Convent is quite large, and the self-guided tour through it is easy to follow with decent signage. It wasn't too busy when we were there (a Friday morning in late September) and it was very interesting to walk through this historic site. There is a parking lot right out front, and it wasn't busy when we got there fairly early in the morning, but when we left a few hours later it appeared full! The rest rooms were out of service due to a water issue in the toilets, so we had to go to the little cafe near the parking lot (and pay for toilet access) but that was really the only drawback.
C M — Google review
Absolute must see. A surprise around every corner. Many cloisters from different periods of history. Fascinating place. Lots to enjoy!
Ivana F — Google review
€15 entry fee for adults and yes it’s worth every cent , they reckon it’ll take 2 hours to get around this amazing building and I suggest at least that or even 3-4 hours and just take your time to take in all that the convent has to offer. The architecture is mind blowing , thr feeling of history within these walls has to experienced. This is a well worth visit and I thoroughly recommend it and walk up to it up the cobblestone winding hilly road that I assume is the original track to the convent and castle .

The Aqueduto do Convento de Cristo - Troço Pegões Altos is a remarkable 17th-century aqueduct located just off the Leiria road, about 2.3km from town. It was constructed between 1593 and 1614 to supply water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar. The aqueduct stretches approximately 6 km and features an impressive structure with 180 arches, some of which are double-decker.
Beautiful long aqueduct. It looks small from the ground, but then you go up the stairs and realize how long it is. And there is a parking platz under it. Free entry. The was a man playing hand-pan (Rui). Not very adequate for children as they might fall.
Raquel M — Google review
Impressive aquaduct that was commissioned by King John the III of Portugal in 1590 to supply water to the nearby Convent of Christ and the town of Tomar. It has 168 arches and was built in the renessance and mannerist style.
Seimen B — Google review
This is an amazing historical spot for history lovers! It's so well preserved! Definitely worth a visit to see it! By walk, it's 30-40 minutes walk from the center, but it's very beautiful still! You can also have a picnic in the area cause it's very quiet and very nice views. If you want to walk on it, be careful, it seemed pretty dangerous.
Bianca-Timeea — Google review
Very much worth the detour to see the aqueducs. They are impressively tall and you are able to walk on top them!
Sebastien B — Google review
Absolutely incredible! Ample parking in an unmarked dirt lot at one of the ends of the aquaduct, if you are driving by you can't miss it and even if you did there is an intersection not far on either ends you can safely turn around at. If you are not afraid of heights and have good balance you can hike across the top for incredible views and pictures. To walk across it entirely one-way takes about 10mins if you are going carefully. The path is built into the top of the aquaduct alongside the the water carriage. As such, on one side there is a 4ft wall you can use for balance if you feel unsteady. On the other there is a 1ft-max stone wall that offers a buffer from what is otherwise a straight drop down. The path is wide enough for one person to jog comfortably and for two to carefully squeeze by one another. If you are afraid of heights I recommend taking pictures from the field alongside the road near the middle of the aquaduct (maybe 10min walk from the dirt parking lot). 10/10 would go again in a heartbeat!
Ash — Google review
A very large and impressive aqueduct. The view from above is spectacular, it is worth going up and walking along it.
Rachel D — Google review
Absolutely stunning and you can get up and walk along it. Caution needed but we managed in motorcycle boots. It's free and that's impressive. Park right next to it ride or drive alongside it.

Igreja de São João Baptista is a 16th-century church located in the old town of Tomar, Portugal. The church features a stunning Manueline doorway and an impressive octagonal bell tower adorned with Manueline motifs such as the armillary sphere and the Templar Cross. Inside, visitors can admire paintings by Gregorio Lopes and exquisite 17th-century diamond-point azulejos.
Beautiful church, very tranquil, beautiful paintings along the walls of various key biblical events. Nice place to visit for a spiritual boost

I stumbled upon this church while exploring the main square in Tomar and was really impressed. The architecture is stunning, especially the front entrance with its detailed stonework and the tall bell tower—it’s hard to miss. Inside, the atmosphere is very calm and serene. There are some beautiful old paintings and tiled walls that give you a real sense of the church’s history. It’s not a huge place, but there’s a lot to take in if you enjoy art and old buildings. It’s free to enter, and when I went, it wasn’t crowded at all, which made the experience even nicer. Definitely worth a quick stop if you’re in the area—it only takes 15–20 minutes to visit, but it leaves a strong impression.

WOW, saw this church from the Castle above and had to check it out. Neat little square area outside and an impressive clock tower. So much detail in the carvings. Worth the close up view.

Beautiful church in the old town of Tomar. There was a wedding on Saturday when we visited the place. It was beautifully decorated and full of guests. We managed to get in and see the interior of this magnificent building. It looks very beautiful in the inside and outside. A place to visit for sure.

Park "Mouchão" is a lush oasis situated in the heart of Tomar, known as the Island of Mouchao for its location in the middle of the Nabao River. It offers a serene escape with gardens, play areas, and picturesque bridges connecting its sections. Visitors can admire graceful swans and an old-fashioned water wheel at the park entrance. The peaceful atmosphere makes it perfect for leisurely strolls or enjoying a drink at the on-site coffeehouse with scenic views.
Such a peaceful and beautiful park right in the heart of Tomar. Perfect place for a walk, a picnic, or just to relax by the river. The big waterwheel adds a unique touch, and the views across the Nabão River are lovely. There’s plenty of shade, a nice playground for kids, and even a café nearby if you want a drink or snack. Great spot to unwind, especially on a sunny day. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town!

Every four years, the town of Tomar hosts the Festa dos Tabuleiros, a vibrant summer festival that pays homage to the Holy Spirit. The event features locals parading through the streets wearing tall crowns made of bread and adorned with colorful flowers. Thousands of paper flowers, meticulously crafted by anonymous hands over months, adorn the streets, creating a mesmerizing display of color and shapes. This traditional festival is deeply rooted in Portuguese culture and has its most symbolic celebration in Tomar.

Taverna Antiqua is a unique dining experience located in the historic center of Tomar, Portugal. The restaurant aims to transport visitors back to medieval times through its ambiance and cuisine. Situated in the city of the Templars, Taverna Antiqua offers a cave-like atmosphere reminiscent of a medieval tavern, complete with music that sets the tone for an enjoyable evening. Families and tourists are drawn to this popular establishment, which incorporates role-playing tied to Tomar's history.
Dive into medieval restaurants with medieval dresses and pottery. The restaurant is situated just on top of the square with a perfect view. We had a local beer, chestnut, and mushroom soup. Absolutely delicious.
Sheislikea W — Google review
I understand the concept of the place, but my expectations were not aligned with the experience I got. Food was okay but nothing special. The menu could have had more detailed descriptions (we did ask the waiter but still). Although they aim to recreate some medieval experience, the of lighting was far from ideal.. I don't need a lamp in my face but at least I like to see my food clearly. The plates that were on the table from the beginning are not well cleaned. This place is quite popular but to my personal taste, it is not somewhere I would return.
Diogo S — Google review
Touristy and slightly silly BUT to be honest, it was an overall pleasant dinner. Food was better than expected for a themed restaurant - the mushroom soup to start was really quite good, my vegetable pie for a main was comforting and tasty, and my husband had the 'beef with witches sauce' (basically, beef stew) which he enjoyed. We also had the bread and herb butter as our couvert, which tasted fresh. The theming of the restaurant was cool and we sat farther back in a quiet corner, which enhanced the intimate feeling. Service was efficient. We had made a reservation in advance and our table was ready, without a wait.
C M — Google review
If you’ve ever wondered what medieval food tastes like, this place is worth a visit. Food is very tasty, it’s amazing how well dishes can taste without tomatoes, potatoes, chilli or corn. Would definitely recommend the ham hock, it’s more like a roasted pork knuckle, with crispy skin and tender meat. Very friendly staff who can speak English. Menus in English as well.
Benedict L — Google review
Interesting Medieval themed restaurant. Hearty food with great staff. Our waiter was particularly helpful and pleasant. We had a premium wine so our bill was high for Tomar bit defined worth it.
Frank M — Google review
We were looking forward to a unique food and ambience experience, however left disappointed afterwards. The table was ready for the reserved time. A reservation is highly recommended. Olives, bread and butter were standing on the table already when we got seated. Unfortunately, it took more than 45 minutes to get two glass bottles of water (sparkling water/non-sparkling). The water tasted like (and probably was) tap water … for 2€!!! We chose Frog Legs as starters. What a disappointment and sad arrangement. The frog legs were fried to an extent where you only ate and tasted fried bread crumbs and the bones. The main dishes also lacked everything (including a more detailed description on the menu) we are used to when eating out in Portugal. We ordered Entrecôte with fried polenta (three small 5cm sticks) and onion jam (too sweet), Wild boar pie with mashed apples and chicken leg with honey, lemon and ginger. Because of the starter and the main courses, we left without eating dessert.
Suedwester — Google review
Very good food and drinks, super friendly servers and a perfect Middleages decoration. You feel like eating in medieval times, every detail is made with love, from tables to servers, even the toilets. A must go
Maranello360 — Google review
Great idea! The food was certainly ok, nothing we will remember, for standing out in any way - I feel sure we will have forgotten what we had within days. The service though, im sure this is what we will remember as standing out. I must elevate the service to 2 stars because eventually there was a waiter that took his job seriously.. and that lifted service from a -3

An excellent spot to get freshly cooked food Typically Portuguese dishes, well presented, good portions and fair prices for what is offered. All the times I came here, I was offered another dose of what I ordered, and the waiter insisted that I could just let them know in order to get a bit more if I was not satisfied yet. The manager and staff are extremely attentive, and they are ready to receive large groups, however I recommend you book that with advance. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting Tomar. You will be happy with the service, quality of the food and the pricing.

Seven Hills National Forest, also known as Tomars Mata dos Sete Montes National Woodland, is a serene 39-hectare park that connects to the castle and was once used for cultivation by the Order of Christ. The forest features ancient trees and a cylindrical stone tower called Charolinha, resembling the lantern towers of the Convent of Christ. It is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, offering beautiful nature walks below or around the castle walls.
Beautiful park with a fantastic trail around it and the central garden. Walk along the aqueduct on one side and then great views of the woods and castle and convent from the other side. Very serene with plenty of big trees along the path to enjoy.

Such a lovely park set in this fantastic and historic town ,to enter the park you go through a massive set of gates hinged on ivy covered stone/concrete pillars , the immediate park area through the centre is a series of well manicured and maintained floral beds set in a maize of small bush boundaries. That leads to a higher open level grassed area then to another level of kids play area and a cafe . All around this area are trails leading up and around the forest for lovely countryside walks through the forest and leading to several view points . This is a lovely park to visit and I thoroughly recommend you do .

It is a very lovely Park, unusual for such a small town. It’s really hilly but offers very nice scenery along the walks. Most interesting, the walks are all in the shade and it gets you real fresh feeling from the hot sun.
Alf H — Google review
A great place to visit if you have the time. Many trails in beautiful wood land that take you to different view points as well as some templar secrets such as the Charolina and a small cave, as well a big swing with a view. Also there is a good way to go to the castle and/or the convent. One trail goes beside the aqueduct and a small dam called Kings chair. At that point there is a tunnel for those interested in cave exploring. Close to the entrance there is a playground for children and toilets. Also a visitor center, where you can get a map with the different trails.

Love this garden, so beautiful.. People below complained about garden not being well taken care of. I like the vibe about it. Looks different from the other ones. This is more natural and calm.

It’s always an amazing place to go for a walk in the woods. The park is well looked after and the trails are clean and well-marked.

You could change the time in google map if the park is closed. It would save us the trip and time. I was really looking forward to see this park and then this notice surprised me.

Estrelas De Tomar is a charming spot to enjoy a delightful breakfast with a variety of cookies and specialties, along with delectable ice cream for dessert. The place offers traditional Portuguese sweets like Fatias de Tomar and other conventual confectionery products. Despite the limited selection during opening hours, the pastries are described as delicious and homemade. Visitors praise the friendly staff, reasonable prices, and recommend trying the beija-depressa sweet or the chocolate barquinho.
Tasted delicious Portuguese pastries, all good and home made. Nice service with lots of explanation in English ;) Give it a try if you visit Tomar.

The city hall of Tomar is an impressive and notable structure located at the base of a hill leading to a convent. Situated on a spacious square facing the church, this rectangular building boasts well-designed architecture that seamlessly blends into the charming old town. While Tomar offers various historical monuments and an enchanting Old Town, it receives a slight deduction in rating due to limited hospitality services.
The City Hall with cute mosaics on the main square of the town.

Old Town is really great as well as some of the monuments. Minus 1 star for lack of hospitality: no restaurant open netween 3 and 6 (that can be extended berween 2 and 7). What kind of tourism oriented city is doing such a thing? And still they declare them self a Templar City ....

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful city. It's a shame it has the mayor it does. I made a simple request for speed bumps to reduce excessive speeding in a town under the administration of current Mayor Hugo Cristóvão of Tomar. He simply said the speed bumps would hinder traffic, especially ambulances, vehicles I haven't seen pass by in two months. He'd rather have an accident and someone die. What a good mayor Tomar has. Thank you, Mr. Mayor. I've already seen that you care deeply about your citizens. I'm even embarrassed to read the email he sent me. My vote won't be there, and I hope many people feel the same way.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tomar's historic center, Tasca O Perdigoto stands as the oldest tavern in this charming town steeped in Templar history. This inviting spot is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in delicious petiscos—traditional Portuguese tapas that are both mouthwatering and budget-friendly. Guests rave about the flavorful dishes, including fried shrimp with a zesty sauce and marinated pork leg known as friginada, all served up with warm hospitality.
Great food, drinks and atmosphere!

Recently re-opened under new management, this has a simple and very Portuguese menu. We were the only non-Portuguese in there, and it was full. Absolutely delicious food, really good service especially considering how busy it was. Portions are large! We had 1/2 doses of Friginada & Pica-pau with batatas and salada - plenty of food for three.
Joe M — Google review
I had the pica-pau, the friginada and some sides, both were amazing and I highly recommend as a picky eater. The service was amazing and the food more so. The house white wine was also perfect and I drank several glasses. I think this is the kind of place people describe as 'where the locals go'. I wish I could share pictures but I ate it too quick :)

Excellent experience, the food and bread was delicious and traditional. They offer full portions or half portions on many dishes. The service was outstanding, our server spoke perfect English and explained every dish and helped us with our selection’s. Definitely worth a visit. We left full and happy 🫶🏻

Had a lovely lunch at O Perdigoto! We ordered the olives, bread, and quijo assado for openers, the trilogy of apps, which included pica pau, moalhas, and another meat dish - all sooo good. And the day’s special, which was bacalhau a bras. For dessert we got the biscuit cake and coffee. Oh, and a jug of the White House wine. All was delicious and reasonably priced. Would definitely come back!

Lovely place to bring the family or friends and camp or spend a good day during the summer. The water is not too cold to swim and there are multiple trails for a walk. There is access to a public toilet and some parking space, even tho the road to get there is a tight dirt road.
