Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, located at the end of Saddington Street in Gravesend, is a magnificent Sikh temple and community hub that opened in 2010. The ornate marble building is open to visitors daily and offers guided tours on weekends as well as educational visits for schools. It was entirely funded by the local Sikh community and serves as a place of worship for them.
I came around the corner, and I was stunned. It takes your breath away. As a temple, it must be one of the most impressive structures I have ever seen of this nature. The share size of the building plus the architecture are something to behold.

Beautiful place and architecture they made me feel very welcome. Te place is very clean, you must remove your shoes before entering to the temple and cover your hair… They’re are many places where you can was your hands I think is part of the culture. Food is served for free I could not believe that and it was delicious vegetarian curries . The toilets were clean. They have parking and nice grounds to walk around

Always very serene and peaceful. Great atmosphere, excellent architecture, and very helpful granthis and sevadaars. I am always able to meditate and connect with Guru in the main sanctum sanctorum. The langar hall and the corridors with the photo commentary complement the praying space very well.
Inderjit K — Google review
I visited for the first ever time for a wedding. Absolutely stunning architecture which has you in awe as soon as you're pulling in towards the car park. The beautiful visuals continue as you enter the Gurdwara, and more importantly of course, the peaceful aura of where you are, in a home of divinity. Sadly, the same positivity can not be extended to the people involved with running things here. After paying my respects to SGGS, I was leaving but a relative briefly stopped me to speak to me. In this moment I had a lapse of thinking and forgot I still had my back turned to SGGS for around 10-20 seconds. I fully admit my mistake. I felt a firm shove in my back and turned around to see one of their administrators who then rudely and aggressively told me to get out because they wanted to empty the hall quickly for the next event. Out of surprise, I instinctively replied "sorry?". He repeated himself again, this time in English, and more disrespectfully than before, but now added that I'd also had my back turned to SGGS and reprimanded me for it. Out of shock and respect for the surroundings, I quietly left without resorting to responding in the same manner. My father (who has taken amrit) was furious when he heard about this, and said I should've retaliated. I must also mention that the Anand Karaj and the rest of the ceremony was by far the lengthiest I've ever sat through. Everyone was amazed by how long it was drawn out, so if it's about business and venue turnover, he should look at the lack of efficiency there. I later found out the same man had angrily reprimanded a photographer for getting the groom to pose in front of the building outside, because of his back being to the Gurdwara. At this point I would suggest walking backwards when you're leaving. In all honesty, this kind of approach is going to drive people in this area away from Sikhi. For the part where I absent-mindedly made a mistake, there are much better ways of handling it. If he does this to the wrong person, there will be a jaloose incident which will make the community look terrible. Such a bitter end to what had been a lovely day here.

New Tavern Fort, situated in Gravesend, Kent, is a well-preserved 18th-century artillery fort that served defensive purposes until World War II. It provides a unique opportunity to delve into the history and architecture of military fortifications from that era. Visitors can explore underground tunnels and the Visitor Centre to learn about Gravesend's wartime experiences. The site also offers guided tours and access to other nearby heritage sites such as the Cold War Bunker and St. George's Church.
Love a walk around this area. It's well taken care of and beautiful. Nice time out with loved ones. We walked on a bit further and sat at the duck pond for a little picnic. Lovely day. There are a couple of parks for the kids, and plenty of areas to sit.
Clare-louise T — Google review
Free to enter. What a great little site. There are info boards explaining the history of the places. It’s now set in a garden area open to the public and has a band stand at the centre. There’s a collection of cannons and anti-aircraft guns to look at and the WW2 mine. Enjoy!

The underground parts to the fort are only open at the weekends and are £1 entry. The upper parts are open 24 hours

Having seen a lot of forts around the Medway/Kent area, few can compare to here, considering it is also now a park (opposed to somewhere like Tilbury across the river, which was protected). There's still a lot of the embankments to see, cannons complete with the rails and wheels (which you don't see often), plus you can now enter the tunnels (weekends only). Sadly it was cash only otherwise I would have jumped at the opportunity. Also home to Milton Chantry, the oldest building in Gravesend, an English Heritage site but free to enter (also weekends only). Would be nice if the council did some litter picking now and then.

The new Tavern Fort is park of an area of Gravesend that includes the Milton Chantry chapel, Riverside Leisure Area and Gravesend Promenade. The fort and leisure area are open during daylight hours and for special events. Milton Chantry is only open though certain hours of the day and run by English Heritage, in conjunction with Gravesham Council. Access to the fort is free apart from when special events are held in the park. The fort contains a number of guns and cannon, used during it's history as a fort, as well as magazines used to store armaments, some of which can be see on display in the fort. Open on weekends is the ammunition stores, with an array of displays relating to the New Tavern Fort's use as a gun emplacement, protecting the River Thames. In addition, there are also displays covering WW2, on the home front in Gravesend, with various types of air raid shelters and civilian life during WW2 . Admission to the ammunition stores is £1 per person, and there is an information sheet as to the purpose of which each room was used for, or the various displays. On the promenade area, there is an open air gym free to use by the Gravesend Rowing Club. On my visit, there was also a fun fair on the promenade and the New Tavern Fort have been used for a recent Gravesend Pride day.

This is a gem for the military enthusiast and has something for all all, as it is set in attractive gardens. There is a wonderful collection of artillery pieces and anti-aircraft guns. If you are lucky enough to arrive on a day which the interior of the fort is open, you can also enter the tunnels and observe how the fort worked.
Ian Y — Google review
Lovely example of a Thames Fort. Great views over the river and to the Tilbury Fort opposite side of the Thames. Few howitzers to see and a mortar gun plus a couple of land mounted naval guns. The fort is in pretty good shape considering it’s right next to run down areas and council estates. The landscape is nice. Only negative is the amount of discarded plastic bottles, glass bottles and waste from food outlets. Such a shame as it looks like the gardeners do a fantastic job.

Nestled along the banks of the River Thames, Royal Terrace Pier boasts a rich history dating back to its construction in 1844. Originally known as Terrace Pier, it earned its royal designation when Princess Alexandra of Denmark arrived here en route to her marriage with Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1865. This historic pier has served as a base for river pilots since the late 19th century and remains an integral part of the Port of London Authority's operations today.
Interesting to see the old telephone boxes and "Pier Master" sign on the door. Love taking photos of local history.

The Statue of Pocahontas, located at St Georges Church, is a bronze tribute to the young woman who died in England at the age of 20 or 21. The exact location of her grave within the church is unknown due to a fire that destroyed it and led to its reconstruction. Visitors can also take boat trips aboard the MV Princess Pocahontas offered by the Freemen of the River Thames.
It’s a tragic story, not as nice as the cartoon would have you believe. This graveyard is the final resting place of Pocahontas. The actual grave has been lost to history when the church burnt down. All the gravestones have been pushed to the side of the graveyard and a new church built. The statue honours Pocahontas
Chris G — Google review
We went in the dark and she could do with some lights! You could still see the outline of the statue and that it was Pocohontas. There is a nearby bench for a nice sit down and to soak in the greatness of the moment, and sing Colours of the Wind. Very easy to find, was well signposted from all around the town and was not far from the river.
Susannah H — Google review
The story is sad and not as cheerful as the cartoon shows. This graveyard marks where Pocahontas was buried, though the exact grave was lost when the church burned down. Gravestones were moved to the side, and a new church was built. The statue is there to honour her.

Have not been to Gravesend many times in my life, but had to visit the famous Pocahontas statue in St George's church. Great statue with so much history. We made our way to Pocahontas statue via "Church Aly (Google Maps spelling) " must be one of the narrowest allys I have walked see photo.

Beautiful statue and beautiful grounds, the sign outside the gate of the church was very informative and overall the statue is a amazing show of respect for this amazing young woman , I came here to see my childhood and adult obsession and pay respects and I wasn't displeased at all. It is definitely worth seeing if you enjoy reading about Pocahontas and her life.

The Woodville is a vibrant theatre complex featuring main and studio spaces that host a variety of entertainment including touring drama, music, comedies, and films. The lower ground floor also houses the Woodville Theatre British Painter gallery which showcases exhibitions throughout the week. Visitors have enjoyed shows such as Glen Miller's Moonlight Serenade Orchestra, Frankie's Guys, and Buddy Holly's winter dance night at reasonable prices with talented performers. The cafe and bar services are quick and friendly, adding to the overall experience.
Saw Illegal Eagles at Woodville theatre. Nice venue quite small so good views from most seats, ours were on the west wing so had some restricted view due to a stack of speakers, but didn't effect the evening as the sound was the most important thing and it was great. Car park round the corner is free after 6 pm, but only 1 exit, so leaving you will need to be patient. Bar can get busy as all theatre's are but had a lovely evening and will book for next year when the illegal eagles return

Great time had at the panto! Really good production and a well experienced front of house team who look after the show, really made it extra enjoyable. We sit on the edge of the stalls at the front though, and have to say our view was somewhat obscured from part of the stage. Didn’t take too much away from the experience though overall and saw almost all of the production 👍🏻

Free parking at parrock street car park. Venue is clean and tidy and the chairs aren’t as bad comfort wise as other theatres. Our bags got searched on the way in anyone with food or drink had it confiscated

I went here to see Nish Kumar (who was great!) with family. The venue is really nice. Considering it is a local arts centre it really has a nice vibe. The venue is not big but it is comfortable and intimate in a pleasant way. The room we were in is surprisingly big really, and at no point did we feel cramped or like the experience lacked at all. The staff were professional, prompt and knowledgeable. All in a great place to see comedy locally.

My daughter did a show here with centre stage in july, nice theater all seats seem to have a good view of the stage. Nice cafe with some seating.

The seating is good with decent leg room, there's a lift for disabled, but they will take off you even the smallest amount of sweets in your bag which seems mean, even a box of tic tacs had to be disputed. The cubicle toilets in the gents needed cleaning and the hand dryers look a real health hazard filthy.

Gravesend Clock Tower, situated at the intersection of Milton Road and Harmer Street, was constructed in 1887 as a testament to Queen Victoria's 50-year reign. The clock tower, made of Portland and Dumfries stone with a backing of London stock brick, mirrors the design of the iconic Elizabeth Tower in London. Standing 50 feet above ground level, its clock face is 5 ft 6 in diameter.
The clock tower has recently been cleaned and was originally called the Jubilee Clock Tower after Queen Victoria's golden jubilee, her image is one side of the clock. Further to this is an image of Edward VII and Elizabeth II. I think it's a marvelous clock in the Gothic manner found at Elizabeth Tower the Palace of Westminster.
Graham L — Google review
Queen Victoria certainly knew how to make a monument! It was built in 1887 and will likely last a couple more hundreds of years given its sturdy construction. It looks like a mini Big Ben in white stone. It sits in the middle of town and the clock was still keeping the correct time when visited. There’s an info panel at its base giving the history of the structure.

The Milton Chantry, an ancient structure dating back to the 12th century, has served various purposes throughout its existence. Originally established as a hospital, it later functioned as a chantry chapel, pub, barracks, and even a gas decontamination chamber during wartime. Exhibits within its walls detail the rich history of both the building itself and the town of Gravesend.
Milton Chantry in Gravesend is a fascinating historical gem, offering insights into its varied past as a chapel, military site, and heritage center. Its exhibitions provide a unique glimpse into local history. It's got a good environment and is a good place to tour. A must-visit!

Good place to visit in the historic town of Gravesend, especially on a sunny day. There is a cafe selling British food at a good price, public toilets, many interesting sights around the park and a nice lake as well as an open vista of the river Thames, well worth a visit.
Ivor W — Google review
Owned by English Heritage - and run by Gravesham Council - Milton Chantry is the remains of a late 14th century place of worship and hospital. The Chantry is located in one corner of the New Tavern Fort and once formed part of it's garrison accommodation, along with even being a tavern at one time. Little is visible of the original building from the inside, but once inside the 14th century architecture is more visible. The Chantry is open to the public on weekends from April to September from 12pm to 5pm 9entry free). Inside there is an exhibition of the Chantry and Gravesend's history, along with a small collection of artefacts from a Roman temple at Springhead. Entry is free, and there is a brief audio guide to the chantry's history. In addition there is a small shop. For refreshments, there is a café in the nearby park.

This church does great work in the community. Houses Sanctuary for the homeless, Food bank and is Street Pastors base. All Churches Together projects. Tilbury Fort, located across the river from Gravesend, was initially built by Henry VIII in the 16th century to safeguard London's seaward approach. The fort was strategically designed to withstand artillery bombardment and played a significant role in history when Queen Elizabeth I delivered her rallying speech against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
A great place to visit, try and pick a day with good weather as there’s a lot of open ground to cover and not much fun in the rain. The site covers history from 1550 to 1950 so hopefully something for most people.
Gary H — Google review
Tilbury fort is an English heritage property , at the edge of tilbury port. It is a fascinating place, lots to see and great views down the Thames. It gives a great insight in what must life must have been like in the fort. There is a very small cafe on site. And a car park is near the entrance (though its quite small)
Kevin M — Google review
Went here as a morning out. A few artillery pieces on view, some very rusty. A small exhibition about the place. Downside was bad for people with motobility issues, I understand it's a historical place, but you have to have facilities for elderly or disabled people. Nice place for a walk if you can.
John B — Google review
An enjoyable couple of hours spent here at the Fort whilst enroute down to Rochester. There is parking right outside the fort no need to park on the carpark outside The Worlds End Pub, pull onto the car park and drive over the cattle grid, this will lead you to the entrance. This is an English Heritage site with a small shop and toilet facilities on site. This was the filming set for the BBC series with Taboo.
Matt L — Google review
Great place to spend a couple of hours exploring. Plenty of parking available, polite staff provide a warm welcome. The tunnels are amazing, such a clever solution to avoid a spark, seems obvious once you know but genuinely genius! Really interesting history to the place.

Tilbury Fort was not busy on this weekday, which meant my group had the place to ourselves. It’s a reasonable half day’s exploration into a bit of war history on a pleasant Autumn day. The staff are helpful and there’s a little shop. You can get into an officer’s house to see how they lived in war time.
Rosamund M — Google review
Nice and peaceful visit to this English heritage site , there ia an entrance fee £6:80 for adults and £4:50 for kids but there is a discount for families , you also need to check what days they are open , very few visitors when I was there( none in fact ) mind you it was a rainy week day , so probably explains it , military and sort of domestic history , plenty to see and explore , they have a tiny café where you can get a drink . The great thing is they sell beer , mead and wine in the gift shop 😀. Getting there if you do not have a car is easy , get c2c train to Tilbury town and get the bus which runs every half hour to Tilbury ferry port and the Fort is just a short walk from there .
Ivor W — Google review
A Fascinating Slice of History – Great for a Day Out! Tilbury Fort is a hidden treasure that’s steeped in history and well worth a visit. Managed by English Heritage, it offers a compelling look into England’s coastal defenses, dating back to the time of Henry VIII and playing a significant role through to World War II. Informative displays and impressive architecture bring the past to life, especially its connection to the Spanish Armada. The grounds are ideal for a picnic, and the riverside location provides some stunning photo opportunities. Just down the river, you’ll also find Coalhouse Fort, another historic defense site—making it easy to turn your visit into a full day of exploring Thames-side military history. It loses a star only because a few areas could use more interactive features or restoration, but overall, it’s a great outing for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful spot rich in heritage.

St George's Church is a charming Georgian church located at the heart of the town, surrounded by an attractive shopping center. The church has a rich history dating back to 1478 and is known as the final resting place of Pocahontas, with her statue in the church grounds drawing modern pilgrims. The building itself was constructed in 1731 and features classical architecture designed by Charles Sloane. The verdant grounds are reminiscent of a small park, offering a serene atmosphere for visitors.
Attended a funeral here. The vicar was excellent. Friendly, warm and very competant. Convenient parking nearby. Some lovely stained glass windows
Alwyn W — Google review
It’s a nice enough church with a famous grave of Pocahontas. It’s a shame that, after the earlier church burnt down, all the graves were cleared and the gravestones stacked at the side. It means that all the actual grave sites have been lost. All we know is that Pocahontas is buried somewhere within the grounds.

I have never been so warmly welcomed into a church in my life! Really nice and friendly people. They even offered me tea with biscuits and told me the story of St George Church. I left a small offering, but maybe I could have given him more... I recommend everyone a visit, it deserves it.

Nice church. Got a community hall which you can rent. They run an indoor market there on Thursday once a month. Access to church is not all the time. Check times on the web site

Went visit the Pocahontas statue and the church was open We were welcomed by the locals and taken around the church and told of the history of the church and Pocahontas
Darryl J — Google review
Very friendly church. You will feel very welcomed here by the congregation and the priest. The stained-glass window depicting Jesus will also greet you at the door. This church is well-connected with the local community. May God bless this church and let it prosper! Pocahontas was initially buried in the churchyard, but her remains have disappeared, and her whereabouts are now a mystery. The church commemorates her story with stained-glass windows and a statue of Pocahontas in the churchyard, which is now the Princess Pocahontas Gardens. Pilgrims still come here today.

Small church. Known place "rest in peace" for Pocahontas. Very quiet and peaceful place.

I've only been to one service so far but I loved it. The vicar, Trudy, is fun, spirited and doesn't care when things go wrong. I also enjoyed the building and was excited to see they are currently fundraising to twin their toilets.

I attended a BURN event here today. Very worshipful atmosphere, people worshiping in different ways, through music using variety of instruments, painting, dancing, incorporating scarves and flags to enhance worship. Wonderful to see such freedom. While looking around the church it was obvious that children and families were very active here. Evidence of previous years "Holiday Clubs" and signs saying there was informal crèche facilities available. Took a wander around the grounds when leaving, very pleasant surroundings and the daffodils were blooming.

Historical landmark
Gravesend Blockhouse is one of the five artillery blockhouses constructed by King Henry VIII along the Thames shoreline. Situated in Royal Pier Road, it can be easily spotted near the Clarendon Royal Hotel lawn. The site showcases traditional weapons used during that era and offers a glimpse into Gravesend's military history. Despite its small size, it is an interesting archaeological display that attracts visitors interested in historical sites.
There are some traditional weapons that were used at that time. Very small place. Free to visit and look it located by the side of road and next to river...
Kul K — Google review
The Gravesend Blockhouse was an artillery fort built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII's coastal defenses. It was a two-storey, D-shaped structure with a circular bastion and gun platforms. It worked alongside Tilbury Fort to protect London. The blockhouse was remodeled in the 18th century and eventually demolished in 1844. Its remains were uncovered during archaeological excavations in the 1970s.

The Lost Village of Dode, tucked away in the enchanting North Kent Downs, offers a truly magical setting for weddings. This unique venue features both indoor and outdoor ceremony options, including the opportunity for pagan handfasting rituals amidst a stunning Stone Circle backdrop. The highlight is undoubtedly its 900-year-old medieval church, which adds an air of history and romance to any celebration.
We just wanted to say a massive thank you to the whole team at The Lost Village of Dode for making our whole wedding experience so incredibly special and authentic as we had hoped. From start to finish, everything was perfect, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the love and care you all put into our celebration. A special mention must go to Paul, who was absolutely amazing. He performed our handfasting ceremony, which was so meaningful to both of us and something we will treasure forever. His warmth and energy made the moment even more magical. We were also blown away by Matt, who went above and beyond in ways we could never have expected. He wasn’t just our photographer, but also our go-to person throughout the whole day. From the moment we arrived, Matt was there, calm and reassuring, especially before the ceremony. His support helped ease any nerves we had, and he ensured that everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Plus, his friendly, approachable manner made him a real joy to have around—our guests loved him, and we’ve already seen some incredible photos! And of course, we can’t thank Becky enough for all of her hard work and guidance throughout the entire year. From the moment we met her in January, she was a constant support, helping us navigate all the planning and making sure every detail was covered. She was the calm and steady hand we needed throughout the planning process and on the day itself. We truly felt that with Becky and the whole team, we were in the best possible hands. We’re so happy to have celebrated our wedding at The Dode, and we know it will always hold a special place in our hearts. We look forward to returning over the years as we grow older together. Best wishes, Charlie & Mike Strawson x

The lost village of Dode blew my mind! I thought it looked good in the pictures, but it was even better in person! I went to visit The Lost Village of Dode as a potential wedding venue. The grounds are lovely and well maintained, it’s pet friendly with friendly staff. The church has been restored in the most beautiful way in keeping with the style. It’s a traditional medieval church with character and had such a lovely feel. I fell in love with the place as soon as I arrived. It’s in a lovely peaceful and quiet location. I recommend anyone to go visit and see it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed! And I have also booked this venue for my wedding!
J S — Google review
We knew immediately on the day we visited Dode that it would be the perfect place for our wedding venue. There's something special about Dode that we instantly fell in love with. Communications with Becky (our Ceremony Coordinator) were timely and informative and the list she provided of 'prefered' suppliers from our Photographer (Matt James), Florist (Moody Blooms), Drinks Van (Double Bubble), Musicians (Sandra & Paul) and the most amazing grazing platter (Prinsa's Celebrations) all proved to be top tier! and being able to organise all of this amongst these 'friends of Dode' made the whole process hassle free! We wanted a small and intimate celebration (16 guests) and we couldn't have wished for a more beautiful day, Paul & Matt were our hosts and they did an outstanding job, really making us and our guests feel relaxed and welcomed. We'll be returning to Dode (in 1 year & 1 days time) to renew our handfasting vows, and I'm sure that it'll feel like visiting an old friend. Dode will always have a special place in our hearts and we can't thank everyone involved enough for the magic they brought to our day! Lucy & Jack

We chose The Lost Village of Dode for our intimate wedding ceremony and it was just perfect!! The whole experience was so lovely! We also had the handfasting ceremony with Paul. Everything was so magical! We were very happy with everything! Thank you so much!

Dode is a peaceful, atmospheric and intimate venue away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. There is something very special about it which is not easily put into words. We had a wonderful wedding day here and the team were so supportive from start to finish answering all of our questions and helping sort things so the day went smoothly. Despite being a nearly 1000 year old venue they were able to assist family members that had access needs enter and exit the venue as needed. All of our wedding guests had a lovely time and kept commenting on how ‘amazing’ and ‘unique’ the venue was.
Lexie R — Google review
Lovely place with a peaceful air about it. There was even a guide who gave us a lovely talk on the place. Some leaflets were there with a donation box going towards the printing.
Rick S — Google review
The Lost Village of Dode provided the most magical setting for our wedding celebration. This unique, lovingly restored deconsecrated church exceeded all our expectations as an exclusive-use venue. Becky and Charlotte were incredibly attentive throughout the day, ensuring our guests felt relaxed and welcome in this stunning location. Their professionalism and dedication to making our day perfect were truly outstanding. The venue itself is breathtaking, with its Norman architecture and picturesque grounds creating an intimate and romantic atmosphere. Our guests were in awe of the beauty and history of the Lost Village of Dode, and many commented on how wonderful they found the location and service. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting to exchange our vows and celebrate our love. The Lost Village of Dode will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and we highly recommend it to any couple seeking a truly unique and unforgettable wedding experience. Thank you to all the team at Dode for having us, and we look forward to visiting again in the future. Photos by Matt James Photography

Beautiful place, pagan church with history. There was apparently village which has gone since 13 hundreds black death killed everyone. They use it as a prived burial ground now, they have tombs at the back of church garden with catacombs where some people purchasing place to lay ashes of their relatives. You need to be very lucky to see it inside as I think normally would be closed. We have some lack as we actually have been there right before burial ceremony. Definetely worth to visit you can hike from Vigo or from Upper Halling.
