History Museums
The Ethnographic Museum, located in the former home of Enver Hoxha, offers a glimpse into 19th-century life in Gjirokaster. The museum showcases traditional Albanian crafts, arts, and culture through exhibits of costumes, tools, and household items. Housed in an old Ottoman-era building, it aims to recreate the interior of houses from that era. Visitors can explore various artifacts and learn about the indigenous people's history for an entrance fee of 500 Lek.
Very interesting and large museum with many things to see, also digital (films with music or traditional food recipes). We enjoyed it very much. Staff is very nice and helpful, the is bathroom on the 3rd floor and some of the rooms have AC. The terrace on the 3rd flor is magical with beautiful views. I definately recommend, its must gave in Gjirokastra.
Monika C — Google review
It’s odd, the entire inside of the building has been renovated. There is no idea of how the old original building looked. It’s more interactive than anything. There are a few costumes but not much more. Better off going to the museum next door. It’s much more interesting and even cheaper entrance
Jeremy K — Google review
Beautifully displayed modest collection of regional clothing, artifacts and polyphonic singing and other rituals. Good English explanations. Lockers and airco present. Price 2025 is 500 LEK pp. Well recommended.
Jeroen N — Google review
What a lovely place and space! I was drawn in for the costumes but the entire experience was so informative. Don’t miss the video about a traditional wedding at the end!
Damaris R — Google review
This was a very well organized, informative and insightful exhibition into Albanian culture and history. I find museums to be boring after a while, but this one honestly had a good mix of textual, visual, audio and video exhibits to keep me engaged. Learnt a lot about Albanian culture (their dresses, weddings, tribes, history, etc) and got to see a lot of cool stuff (the attached pictures are just random clicks and there is plenty more to see than what is shown in them). Plus the fact that it's Enver Hoxxa's house makes it even more interesting to just walk around it in and see what the home of the man who has a prominent role in Albanian history looks like. In June 2025, tickets were 500 lek (5 Euros) per person. There is a private parking right next to the museum where the guy honestly charged us based on vibes. Despite him speaking no English and us speaking no Albanian we reached an agreement of 3 euros for 5 hours which seemed fair. The road up to the museum gets quite narrow at times so if you're not a comfortable driver in narrow hilly streets, I don't recommend taking your car up there.
Shahmeer A — Google review
Ethnographic museums are my favourite type of museums whatever country I'm visiting. There's plenty of material here and lots of English information boards. Gives one an insight into the various rooms of a traditional house aswell as clothing types, footwear and many other things. Interesting to also learn about the process and events that would take place during a traditional marriage. There's a good display of the different types of traditional houses in Gjirokaster.
Miles M — Google review
A very interesting museum that combines history with culture. The rooms are set up like a traditional Gjirokastrian home, with costumes, furniture, and household items on display. What makes it special are the multimedia touches: video presentations and audible sessions with polyphonic music and recordings of local wedding ceremonies, which really bring the traditions of the region to life. The building itself stands on the site of Enver Hoxha’s birthplace, so it carries its own historical weight. Friendly staff and nice views from the terrace make it even more enjoyable. Definitely worth visiting when in Gjirokastër.
Albi A — Google review
Very interesting!! Not only the building itself, which is very well maintained tradtional house of a wealthy family( ex leader Enver Hoxha place of birth) but all the collection above all the traditional clothing.

Skënduli House, located in Gjirokaster, Albania, is a historic museum that offers visitors a glimpse into the life of the wealthy during the Ottoman era. The original house was destroyed in a fire, but the Ethnographic Museum now stands on its former site. Built in the 18th century, Skënduli House showcases stunning Ottoman architecture with intricate woodwork and traditional Turkish bath features.
What an excellent hour I spent in this fascinating house with an amazing history of family life of this area. My guide was a woman with excellent English who clearly showed passion for the history of the house and was able to answer all my many questions in detail. Totally absorbing and great value.
Alan N — Google review
Disappointing 😞 Not really worth 300 lek when you can have a much richer experience at the nearby Ethnographic museum for 500 lek. There was nobody available there to tell me anything about the house and only basic information on a board at the entrance. I would like to see information boards in each room.
Miles M — Google review
This tower house is very interesting to visit. You can see the life of a wealthy family during 17th century. There are many rooms to visit and there is also a beautiful view of the valley. We take the guided tour. Our guide was a little too fast in explaining, however she explained many interesting things to us.
Erminia — Google review
Much superior to the Ethnographic Museum next door. If you visit one then see this one. Beautiful interior

My woman of 12 years wanted to go visit this place because this is her homeland and we live in the United States. While visiting this place, we went to the most special room called the wedding room, and the tour guide explained to us that this is the room man and a woman were married. So I decided to get on my knee right then I’m there and ask her to marry me (she said yes 🥰). Photos are not allowed in this room, but he was kind enough to film it and let us take photos which we will keep private out of respect for him and the facility, but that was the most thoughtful thing. So kudos to him and thank you for making this a wonderful experience.

Very interesting old house. Worth the entry fee only if you have a guide. Our walking tour guide explained the importance of each room. If you don’t have a guide, you will be confused.

When visiting Gjirokastra, one cannot miss the intriguing Cold War Museum, which is actually a network of tunnels hidden beneath the castle. Constructed in secrecy during the 1960s under Enver Hoxha's regime, this underground complex features around 80 rooms and was kept from locals until the early '90s. The museum offers guided tours that provide fascinating insights into Albania's communist past and the intense paranoia surrounding potential invasions.
Interesting location and guided tour . You can walk the site that was suppose to be the arc in case a nuclear war broke out . You can see the various rooms, passages, living quarters, common rooms and mechanical and ventilation systems. You can tour with a guide. If you want to access a free tunnel , there is one directly above this tunnel, and it runs across the breath of the castle/fort from one side to the next.
Joel A — Google review
Decent tour of the bunker. It was hard to find info online, so I'm posting it here (picture of their operating hours attached). The office to buy the ticket for the tour is to the right of the main entrance of the municipal building at the top of the steps. Monday to Sunday, 9:00-16:00. The ticket price is 200 LEK, cash only. If you want to join the tour you have to be in the office 5 minutes before the next tour starts. The tour takes 20-30 minutes. There is a tour every hour from 10am, and 3pm is the last tour. There wasn't a whole lot of context from the guide about the history of Albanian dictatorship / communism, so read up on it before you go. Instead the tour was more about showing you different rooms of the bunker, the ventilation room, the power room, the green room where the dictator operated from, the small kitchen, the total of 3 toilets for the 200 people who lived down there, etc.
Angela A — Google review
The Cold War Bunker in Gjirokastër is an underground shelter built in the 1970s during Albania’s communist time. It was made to protect leaders if there was a nuclear attack or invasion. Inside, there are command rooms, sleeping areas, meeting rooms, and communication spaces. Today, it is a museum where visitors can learn about life and defence during the Cold War.

A cool experience at the Cold War Tunnel Museum So, on this super hot summer day, I decided to check out the Cold War Tunnel Museum. Honestly, it was one of the best choices I could have made! As soon as I walked in, I was hit by this awesome cool air that felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the heat outside. This place isn’t just about history; it’s a cool spot to chill out when the sun is blazing. While I was wandering around, I noticed this guy who really stood out. He was decked out in swim trunks, a casual t-shirt, a black cap, and some stylish sunglasses. He was the definition of cool! He was posing in front of all the exhibits like he was on a photoshoot, and honestly, it made the whole experience even more fun. Each room was like his personal stage, and he was totally owning it. As he struck these fun poses, it was clear he was having a blast. The way he mixed his laid-back vibe with the serious history of the Cold War tunnels was just perfect. It felt like he was on a mission to show everyone that learning about history can actually be a good time, even when it’s hot outside. The museum itself was packed with interesting stories and artifacts, and this cool character was soaking it all in. He explored the tunnels with this sense of wonder, and the cool air made it easy to lose track of time. It was like he was making the most of every moment, turning a simple visit into something special. Watching him interact with everything made me realize how much he added to the whole experience. He wasn’t just another tourist; he was a reminder that history can be fun and lighthearted. The Cold War Tunnel Museum became his playground, and I couldn’t help but smile at how much joy he brought to the place. In the end, my trip to the Cold War Tunnel Museum was way more enjoyable thanks to this cool character. If you’re looking for a place to cool down and have a good time, this museum is definitely the spot. Just make sure to wear your coolest outfit and maybe channel a bit of that guy’s spirit, you’ll walk away with some great memories!

It was great experience for us. Guided tour was really informative and guide was really great at his job. We loved it!
Zülal T — Google review
It is exactly what it says, an old bunker that was never used. There is not much history to learn. The tour takes 20 minutes. At least it is a nice and cool escape from the heat outside.
Adam N — Google review
Tours are on the hour and are 200 lek (£2). The tour lasts about 20-30 minutes traveling through the tunnels. Some rooms are set up as offices and you get taken to the generator room but otherwise there is limited things to view.
Chris R — Google review
The Cold War tunnel is definitely worth a visit if you are in Gjirokaster - there are time slots so don’t expect to just turn up and go as they are guided. Guide was fab.

4Ali Pasha Bridge

Ali Pasha Bridge is a must-visit in Gjirokaster, offering a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience. The uphill walk through residential areas is strenuous but rewards with incredible views. It's an old Ottoman-era stone bridge used by shepherds for generations, located just a 30-minute hike from Gjirokaster Old Town. Arriving around 5pm may offer the chance to witness farmers herding their sheep across the bridge.
I recommend a morning hike here to catch the sunrise! I bought some bread and drinks along and was able to enjoy the magnificent view all by myself, it was an amazing experience. It's not a very long hike but the path to the bridge can be a bit dangerous, its pretty rocky and there's no safety structures along the way. There isn't a clear route shown on Google Maps, but you should be able to hike to the bridge blind by following the rocky path. Took me around 15 minutes from the starting point. Fun fact, the bridge wasn't actually a bridge back then, it's an abandoned aqueduct!
Yuhng Y — Google review
The Ali Pasha Bridge walk is one hell of a journey. According to Google Maps it’s only about 2 km long though I must warn you it’s uphill the entire way and I recommend following Google Maps we even got directions from the locals who directed us in the correct direction. If you are unfit or don’t do well in the sun I’d recommend going very early in the day or perhaps finding a taxi who could take you up there as it’s not for the weak. There are plenty of cars coming up and down we got many offers for lifts on the way up and on the way down from locals and taxis, though walking was part of the experience and we loved every moment of it. On our way up we even came across some really friendly dogs and the scenery was phenomenal. Once you get to the top you’ll see Ali passes bridge in the distance and you can take a very short walk down either under the bridge or you can stand directly on the bridge. There is also a local bar there where you could get anything from snacks to beer and espresso all at a reasonable price is far cheaper than anything you’ll find within the city.
Jade A — Google review
Absolutely beautiful, the hike is 100% worth it. Just make sure to wear solid shoes that are suitable for a bit of trekking! Also, we ran into this sweet old lady by the street and she showed us the way to the trail 🐕🐾🌞
Helene Z — Google review
Very pleasant and easy hike if you are used to walk up steep streets and some rocks, even hiked in barefoot-style sandals. A very nice pause from all the crowded places. There were a few people around, but not many at 16:00-17:00 and the sun was almost at the golden hour. Nice view of the mountains and valleys so overall a great experience to have a break from the shops and crowded places.
Andreea B — Google review
You have two options: 1️⃣ Walk from the town. 2️⃣ Drive up through the narrow streets and walk. If you choose to walk, the path is quite steep. It’s fine in good weather, but it can get slippery if it starts raining. From the town car park, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the viewpoint, and then another 20 minutes from there. If you drive, there’s a nice little spot where you can park about 300 metres before the Natural Park "Ali Pasha Bridge" Café/Farm.
Przemek T — Google review
Do not skip this !!! 10/10 spot Fun fact : It' not a bridge, but part of an old aqueduct. The view is absolutely gorgeous. Take about 45min to reach in pretty good shape, and I'd say around 1.5h if you wanna take your time or family (from the old bazaar). Wear good footwear, had it's very uphill and the road out of town to the brigde is a lil bit rocky. Bring lots of water, as it's not very accessible past a certain point. I recomment going for sunset !!!
Christophe T — Google review
It was a bit of a walk and you kinda go to the countryside. Also it’s a lot of uphill if you’re coming from the city. There seems to be an unofficial guide like some of the reviews say and he points you to the right directions. The bridge is cool, feels sketchy when you're up there but it’s all good.
Josh B — Google review
It’s beautiful in the evening after a hot day. But I would not drive there unless you are confident with narrow steep roads, best to go on foot if you can endure the steep climb. We actually drove up from Old Town and parked at (40.0680663, 20.1349609), Google Maps tried to take us into very narrow roads and it took a while to figure out a route that made more sense (just follow the main road and look on satellite map if it helps). The path to the bridge from the end of the road is fine but may be too rocky for some. If you’re not a comfortable hiker, it may feel dangerous.

Nestled in the heart of Gjirokaster, Albania, Zekate House is a stunning example of Ottoman-era architecture that dates back to 1811. This magnificent structure was built by Beqir Zeko, a prosperous local merchant, and showcases the wealth and artistic flair of its time.
They have the most mesmerizing view of the town and castle with stunning sunsets. Their hospitality is off the charts. Best beer korcha dark beer.. healthy tasty smoothie. They provided a chilled glass for the beer. Which was never seen usually. Only downside is it's a cash only place. They accept Euros and it's a good deal 🤝. I recommend visiting here if you are in town. Do the hike or come by car. (Careful with narrow road).

Amazing view , the house is really interesting and there is a description for each room. They have a cute terrace with a bar, some kittens were playing in the yard, excellent blues music. The owner was really nice and friendly. Could be a good spot for a romantic date or just to relax and enjoy the view.

What a fabulous house to visit when in Gjirokastër. The owner is such a lovely man who made us feel very welcome. A really interesting house to visit with splendid views too. Gorgeous rooms. The cafe/coffee area outside is lovely and relaxing again with lovely views. It wss probably the best coffee we had had in Albania! It was an added bonus that fabulous blues music was being discreet music was playing which added to the ambiance. Definitely worth making the effort to walk there.

Stone City Hostel is a top-rated accommodation located in the historic old town of Gjirokastra. The hostel boasts impeccable design and professional management, making it a favorite among travelers. Guests praise the welcoming and helpful owners, as well as the included breakfast. The hostel offers great facilities, clean rooms, and an inviting outdoor area. Visitors appreciate the friendly staff who provide valuable recommendations for exploring the town and dining options.
One of the best hostels we have stayed at in Albania. The owner Walter and the volunteers are amazing, they could not be more helpful and kind. The location couldn’t be more perfect for the old town, and the free breakfast was delicious - they even made cake for everyone! Perfect for groups or solo travellers, everyone is very social!

One of the nicest hostels I have ever stayed in!!! Cannot recommend enough. Bit more expensive than some of the other hostels in the area but 100% worth it. So clean, spacious and very comfy beds. Hostel felt very safe and is located close to all the nearby attractions and a short walk to the bus stop. Each bed has light, charging point and a large lockers. Rooms have AC. Towels also included. The breakfast included in the stay was sooo good - fresh bread, fruits, eggs, cake and tomatoes/cucumbers. Also tea and coffee. Very generous!! The owner (Walter) also gives a walking tour - would highly recommend joining if you can. It was so great, took us to more local places and gave a fantastic and digestible explanation of the history of Gjirokaster. Also a nice way to meet people. They also hosted a quiz night, which was lots of fun! Definitely recommend staying at Stone City, and most definitely would stay again!!

One of the best hostels I've ever been to! Turned an interesting visit to Gjirokaster into an absolute highlight of our whole trip! Generous and passionate owner who cares deeply about sustainable tourism in Albania and is always finding ways to give back to the local area while showing visitors a great time. Rooms have views that rival many other viewings points in the city. It was actually hard to leave the rooms to explore instead of just basking in it! It honours and echoes many aesthetic aspects of Gjirokaster. Probably the best designed hostel I have ever seen?? Wonderful breakfast too. Don't miss grandma's dinner or any excursions to the nearby national park. We will cherish the memories! They also organized walking tours and other social events There are amazing restaurants and bars super nearby that open late into the night too. The hostel have a useful list of recommendations.

Stone City Hostel lived up to and exceeded the hype. Easily my favorite hostel that I've stayed at anywhere. The accommodation was great. I spent nights in both the dorms and a private room, and would have been glad to spend more in either. Travelling solo the hostel has daily events that make it super easy to meet fellow travelers. The workers and volunteers are all such great people. Walter who operates the hostel must have had an answer or tip for the far too many questions I had about the area, and is an all around great guy. They packed a takeaway breakfast for an early expedition to Çajup and Lalucit (a remarkable hike across the valley that I strongly recommend), and the sit down breakfast in the morning was great. Couldn't have had a better experience and hope to return one day. Walter if you're hiring and need someone who can use excel, and talk to mountain shepherds please let me know.

Amazing hostel with very knowledgeable hosts that can tell you a lot about the city! The guided tour is perfect to get to know it. Although we were pretty spontaneous in booking and also arrived in the middle of the night, they were so kind to help us and send all necessary information on short notice :) The hostel is very clean, has a welcoming and social interior + veranda, good beds, and delicious breakfast. Thank you!

Restaurant Tradicional Odaja is a charming 1st-floor eatery that has been serving authentic Albanian mountain cuisine since 1937. It's known for its generous portions and home-cooked dishes, making it a great choice for families visiting Gjirokaster. The restaurant is popular among tourists seeking traditional Albanian flavors and a cozy dining atmosphere. With its long-standing history and commitment to quality, Odaja offers an inviting experience for those looking to savor the local culinary heritage in Albania.
Quaint restaurant with excellent local food. Situated on the first floor of a historic stone house, the interior has a rustic charm. There's a small balcony—with two tables for two people each—facing a lively street. The menu doesn't offer any surprises, but the quality is higher than in other restaurants in Gjirokastër. We ordered four dishes, plus dessert—plenty for two persons. Everything was delicious, above all the "qifqi" (rice balls with mint taste) and the meat balls with yogurt. Service is friendly and fast.

A delicious dinner in Gjirokaster!! Great service, reasonably priced, food came out so fast and yum traditional dishes. We got a variety of stuff to share between four people, was approx 10€ each - we left stuffed. We got the village salad, baked cheese with honey, rice balls, stuffed eggplants, meatballs with tzatziki, and the pasticcio. We also were kindly given a Oshaf (custard with figs) to try as dessert. Loved our dinner here. Great food and friendly owners. The place had a very local feel for a place in the heart of the touristy bazaar. I had the lamb liver which was delicious. It was nice to have something different after having tried all the traditional dishes that are on every menu.

A Hidden Gem in Gjirokastër – Our Best Meal in Albania! We stumbled upon this amazing little restaurant in Gjirokastër and, honestly, it exceeded every single expectation we had. After twelve days of traveling through Albania and trying all sorts of local cuisine, we can confidently say: this was our best meal of the trip. We ordered the meatballs with sauce, the stuffed peppers, the chicken tagiani, and the moussaka. The moussaka and the chicken were incredibly flavorful, but the stuffing in the peppers? Absolutely amazing. That said, the true winner of the meal was definitely the meatballs – rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. We’ve had traditional Albanian food before, but this took it to a whole new level. And it’s not just the food. The service was exceptional. We came in with our 9-month-old baby, and the staff immediately offered us a separate little room with air conditioning so the baby could rest comfortably. No baby chairs available, but they let us use the sofa, and the baby is now peacefully napping while we finish our meal. They were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and genuinely warm – always checking in if we needed anything, but never intrusive. The interior is charming and traditionally styled, which only added to the whole experience. And the prices? Very fair – great value for money. So, if you’re planning to visit southern Albania and driving toward Tirana, make sure to pass through Gjirokastër, even just to stop here. The town itself is beautiful, and this restaurant is 100% worth the detour. If you skip it, you’re seriously missing out. For all of this food, 2 large beers and 2 cokes: 3750 LEK. Highly, highly recommended.

I live in Albania and yet I think I had the best traditional food so far in Odaja. The prices were very reasonable and the staff were welcoming. I really recommend you to try baked cheese with honey and sesame and homemade meatballs with yogurt.

Absolutely loved this place. An actual gem in the new bazaar of Gjirokastra. I was recommended this place by my parents who visited last year and said they ate here twice because they loved it so much. And it absolutely did not disappoint. The service was so friendly and quick, we ordered a number of local Albanian dishes and loved them all. We were lucky enough to snag a seat on the balcony overlooking the busy bazaar which added to the atmosphere. The restaurant appears a little hidden but is well worth a visit if you are looking for an authentic and hearty meal in the hustle and bustle of the bazaar.

This place is awesome. We ordered rice cake, chicken soups and meatball. To finish off we ordered the cake of the day and that's the best cake we ever had. The service was quite fast and very kind

Saw this place on Google Maps and it looked like it had nice traditional Albanian food. We went in February 2025 so the menu was the seaonal menu but it still ahd some nice things to eat. We ordered the Chicken Soup (Supe Pule), Rice Balls (Qifqi), Korca Beer and Grape Brandy. We also went at 2 pm, a smaller restaurant but it had a few people dining at the time. Also the owner is super super nice. We paid and he didn't have enough change so he paid us too much money so we could get our change. I thought this was amazing character so I gave him a nice tip! I really recommend this restaurant and really nice people as well.

The Castle of Gjirokastra is a historic 12th-century landmark that overlooks the city and offers a glimpse into centuries of turmoil and conquest. Legend has it that the name 'Gjirokastra' comes from Princess Argjiro, who refused to surrender to the Ottomans and jumped from the highest point with her son, miraculously surviving. The castle served as a prison under communist rule and now houses military exhibits, museums, and crumbling ruins for visitors to explore.
Stepping into the Castle of Gjirokastër felt like entering a world of history and grandeur. The fortress, towering above the city, immediately impressed me with its scale and strategic position, offering breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding valleys. As I explored the walls, towers, and courtyards, I was fascinated by the rich stories of battles, rulers, and centuries of heritage. The museum inside added even more depth, displaying weapons, artifacts, and historical exhibits. The Castle of Gjirokastër was a remarkable blend of history and scenery, making it an unforgettable highlight of my trip.
Mohsin R — Google review
Gjirokastër Castle is definitely a must-visit if you're in southern Albania. It’s a place filled with history, with a dark and somber atmosphere — especially with so many old prison cells spread throughout. The entrance is paid, but unfortunately, the site could use better maintenance and preservation efforts. There's a lot of dust and loose soil around, and since the castle is exposed to the wind, it can get quite dusty and uncomfortable for visitors. Still, it's a powerful and historical site that’s worth seeing, just be prepared for the conditions.
Catarina S — Google review
Incredible experience! You get free range to wander through the entire castle. We spend well over two hours walking around and exploring the castle. There is a second museum within the castle that cost extra to go into. I would recommend paying to go in, it was very informative.

Great place to visit if you love history, it's worth the walk up the hill just for the views alone. There's a museum inside which is on a separate ticket.
Oskar — Google review
One of the rare castles, where one doesn’t get bored. The history is astonishing and the views are spectacular!!! There are boards everywhere in the local language and English which describes the different parts of the castle. We were there around for 2-2.5 hours. Quite an enjoyable experience!!! Must visit. Do try visiting early morning or a little late in the evening, when the sun‘s not so strong.
Rashida V — Google review
The view is stunning, you can see the whole city from above. There are some interesting areas and hidden paths to discover. Even on a busy day, there is plenty of space to move around, they also have toilets inside.

A really wonderful place to visit. The castle is well preserved and you can feel the history of the place. The views of Gjirokastra were fantastic and the castle was not really busy at all. Tickets at the office were cash only but we were advised to purchase online to avoid going to an ATM. They were only 300L and well worth it. The staff were helpful and polite.
K S — Google review
Visiting Gjirokastër Castle is an unforgettable experience. Perched high above the city, the views are breathtaking, you can see the charming stone-roofed houses of Gjirokastër below and the mountains stretching endlessly in the distance. The castle itself is full of history, with its impressive walls, towers, and hidden corners that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. What makes the visit even more special is the staff. They are incredibly welcoming and helpful, always ready to answer questions and share stories about the castle’s past. Their kindness and knowledge add so much to the experience, making you feel both cared for and connected to the history of the place. Overall, Gjirokastër Castle is not only a stunning landmark but also a place where you feel truly looked after. A must-visit when in Albania!

It's an ideal choice for off-peak travel, offering comfortable dorms with individual amenities like curtains, plugs, and lights. The bathrooms are well-maintained with hot water and good pressure. Guests can enjoy stunning views from the terrace and balconies. The hostel also features a rooftop area with swings overlooking the castle and valley.
Friends hostel was a lovely house run hostel! The owners and son always checked in on us and provided any information they could! How to get to the castle, where the bus stop was! We had an overnight bus from Athens and they checked us in at 4 am with no hassle! Good location as it’s not in the centre but is a very short walk to the centre and we had 0 problems with this friendly place.

Lovely hostel with beautiful views of the valley, mountains and the castle. There is a lovely out door terrace with tables and chairs, they serve coffee beer etc, as well as a tasty homemade breakfast for €5. There is also a rooftop terrace. The staff are so friendly, the rooms are clean and don't have too many beds in them. The room i was in also connected to a balcony with a fantastic view. The balcony was also handy for drying hand washed clothes.

Beautiful family-run guesthouse in Gjirokastra's old center. The house, rooms and beds were clean and comfy. Lockers were provided for secure luggage storage. There were cozy sitting areas both inside and outside, perfect for socializing. The hosts were local and super helpful and helped me plan a day trip to Blue Eye.

Love it, great terrace and rooftop, good breakfast, parking and navigating is tough, but thats to be expected for Gjirokaster. Great bed and room temp, only downside is that the hostel doesn’t have to many bathrooms, but this isn’t an issue for the most part as there aren’t too many dorms.

The menu features a variety of delicious Albanian dishes, including iconic items like fried meatballs. With its wonderful location and authentic cuisine, Taverna Kuka provides an excellent dining option for visitors exploring the Gjirokaster County.
First time trying traditional albanian food here and we enjoyed it. The meat balls and oven lamb are highly recommended; so juicy and tender. I personally do not like the rice balls but worth trying if you haven’t had it before. The view from the terrace is amazing. Highly recommend to those who would like to try albanian food.

Food are mediocre! Waiters are not attentive and kept smoking and forget our dishes ! Service is slow and we have to wait so long for the dishes! Lots of flies and mosquitoes are at table! In short , it is not pleasant to have dinner here!

Excellent food, great service and a beautiful view! We were attempting to drive uphill and unfortunately were having some difficulty. The manager, Visar, happened to be in front of Taverna and kindly offered his help ( which we needed)! Once he helped us park safely we decided to give Taverna Kuka a shot. So glad we did! Everything was delicious! The traditional mixed grill was one of the best dishes we've enjoyed in Albania! Thank you to the staff and especially Visar!

Good food for good price. I had to wait a little bit to much for the food as a lot of people entered at the same time, but i complaint and the manager managed it the right way. Apart from that, the food is good quality and tasty, the portions are good. We personally ate chicken with mashroom sauce (i recommend it) and my father ate chicken with potatoes, nothing crazy but it was good. We tried two desserts, one with figs and another one that it is kind of “ tres leches “ that i personally really liked.
Bautii G — Google review
The restaurant itself is very nice and has a great view, but the waiters are not particularly quick and only occasionally attentive. We had a kuka salad, which was nice but the dressing is JUST honey so it was too sweet overall. The spinach casserole was much too salty. But on the other hand, the grilled vegetables, the village salad and the backed potatoes were tasty! ✨
Indie S — Google review
Beautiful terrace with ice cold beer and water. We got the taster platter which said it was for 2, but we split between 3 and had a ton leftover.

They charge you extra if you pay in euros. I asked before I ordered if it was possible to pay with euros and they told me it was fine. I had pork pancetta with roasted potates, which were very dry by the way, and was supposed to pay 800Lek. I ended up paying 9€, which is around 870lek. When I asked about it they told me it was because of the exchange. They should warn people about it before they order.

Ismail Kadare's House in Gjirokastra is a museum that was once the residence of the renowned Albanian author. The house has been restored and offers insights into Kadare's life and work. Although it doesn't take long to visit, it provides an intimate connection with the writer and serves as a significant monument of traditional Gjirokastra architecture.
A great historical experience that in my opinion is a must go if you’re into writing. Kadare is a famous writer who has an entrancing writing style that is inspired by communist era experiences. His home is very beautiful and a lot of history is hidden inside the walls. There are also beautiful views from the balcony of the nearby mountains. Highly recommend.
Rylie L — Google review
As another reviewer wrote, there is more to see in the Ethnographic museum which costs the same 500 lek. Nonetheless, visiting this house is quite interesting. You get to understand what conditions were like here during the war years via extracts from his book of that time. The House has been rebuilt so it's not the same house Ismail lived in but would be similar. Some good views from the outside terraces.
Miles M — Google review
It was a good experience! I liked the idea of the book chapters displayed all over the house, however I felt like the museum lacked a presentation to the biography of the author. Also, the house has lost a bit the authentic part.
Sara D — Google review
The house is unfortunately renovated as it has been burned down in the late 90s, making it less traditional than one would hope. Nevertheless, the museum had some information on Kadares work and personality, which is interesting. If you want to see traditional Gjirokastra buildings, there reportedly are other houses that were better maintained.
Tauras Ž — Google review
This museum is a must if you want to get to know Kadare better – the exhibitions lets you peep inside his childhood through his own words. I wouldn’t call this a museum though — it is more like a memory place (which is even better). If you visit, take time to watch all videos – you won’t really get the full experience without it.
Daniela R — Google review
The house is nice, feels quite modern, and well almost empty. If you are choosing which house to visit I would totally recommend ethnographic museum. The same entrance fee, but much more to see.
Maya M — Google review
Visiting Gjirokaster, my biggest motivation was to see the childhood home of Ismail Kadare—such an important literary figure. The house itself is beautiful, and its historical character is truly impressive. Through quotes from his books, you get glimpses into Kadare’s life and the spaces that shaped his stories. Still, I left with two disappointments. First, considering the size and level of detail, the entrance fee felt a bit high. Second, I expected a museum like this to offer some of Kadare’s works or at least a small shop with souvenirs related to his legacy.
Arda Y — Google review
Original house burnt in 1999, so the current house is a reproduction of how it would have looked at the time of Kadre’s childhood. It’s a great museum of a literary gigant.

Absolutely fantastic experience! This restaurant offers traditional Albanian cuisine at its best. From the moment we arrived, we felt more like guests than customers — the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The staff was outstanding: incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about sharing their culture and food. Thanks to their guidance, we were able to try a wide variety of dishes. The moussaka and eggplant dishes were the best I’ve ever had in my life — full of rich flavors and perfectly prepared. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to truly experience the heart of Albanian cooking. Don’t miss the chance to try these unforgettable dishes!

A restaurant worth recommending! We ended up there when visiting Gjirokastre, in a big heat! The lady owner treated us to water, gave us water for the road, and candy for the children. Food very simple, homemade, tasty (stuffed cabbage in grape leaves, moussaka, Greek salad). At the end we were still treated to homemade cake, which was still warm! A pleasant atmosphere and very nice waiters! A big salute to the whole team!

Good dinner - this place does have a lot of reviews so had big expectations, but wasn’t blown away. We got the stuffed peppers and eggplant (600 Lek), the homemade special salad (500 Lek) and the mousakka (700 Lek) - stuffed eggplant was our favourite. Friendly service, they did give us cake after forgetting our mousaka. Reasonably priced too.

We ordered a few traditional dishes here and it was all made to be vegetarian on request. The host and his team were all very warm, very welcoming, top notch hospitality. We were served a very nice red colored fruity sweet drink as a welcome drink. This drink was very refreshing esp when we mixed it to sparkling water. The main dishes were all also good. The grilled vegetables were the best among them. We were also served a few pieces of sponge cake as dessert, free of charge. The seating is also okay, somewhat rustic and informal in the yard in front of the restaurant. But cannot complain. Highly recommend!

Found via Happy Cow, Google. Reviews have been overwhelming positive, so we tried it out. We were not disappointed! It was rainy, so we sat inside. Our host was very friendly, and helped explain the menu, vegan options. Food came quickly, and was fantastic! I think that this restaurant has the whole package: great food, nice location, friendly staff, reasonable prices, beer/wine, small but clean toilet.

Great home cooked Albanian food. Might be little crazy if gets busy. Seems to be run by a family. Traditional pie and meat balls were quite tasty. Stuffed peppers didn’t strike too amazing (rice in a pepper). Same time overall experience is nice and lovely. House wine is quite simple, would rather recommend a beer in this restaurant ;)

If you want a true taste of Gjirokastër, this is the place to lock in. We ordered the qifqi, meatballs, stuffed eggplant, stuffed peppers, and the chicken tignia. Everything was fresh, well seasoned, and felt like home cooking with real pride behind it. The chicken tignia was the MVP. The owner was very friendly and welcoming. He took the time to share a bit about the dishes and even offered us a traditional Albanian clove wine and sugar drink, which was a classy touch and made the experience feel personal. Service was attentive, the atmosphere had that warm traditional charm, and the value for the quality is strong. Add this to your must-visit list in Gjirokastër.

This place was authentic and very pleasant. It didn’t feel like they begged you to eat at their place and the owners don’t even speak English so to me it didn’t feel like a tourist trap either! The food itself was very delicious, we took a mix of all the traditional food they had + musaka me mish and it was all very tasty, my personal favourite was the Musaka. We were staying at Kerculla and decided to have dinner in the old bizza. We chose this restaurant as it looked authentic and had okay reviews. We ordered the mixed mezze and Greek salad, and unfortunately it was a terrible experience. Shortly after eating, we both became extremely sick and were up all night with food poisoning symptoms, including severe diarrhoea. This was very disappointing and concerning, as food safety should be a top priority. This has since spoiled our holiday as we have in ben for 48 hours and have both lost appetite.

We have mixed feelings about the food in this place. The meat I picked was too greasy, however, mushroom pasta was cooked much better. The location is good and you can enjoy the atmosphere of a city. Waiters are fine but a bit chilly with the orders, we waiter there around 25 minutes even without a lot of people sitting in.

The weather turned changeable today. After coming back from the Ali Pasha Bridge, it started raining. There were lots of people in the restaurants, so we had to find somewhere to hide — and we ended up here. The prices were fine and the food was okay, just average. The chopped pork in the pan with vegetables and sauce was a bit too fatty, and the pumpkin soup was fine. Unfortunately, there was nothing that would make me come back here or recommend this place to anyone. With so much competition around, they really don’t stand out.

Hôtel fantasy restaurant is located on a hill with a beautiful vue. Unfortunately, the service was not as expected. After asking twice for a simple bottle of water, I had to stand up and ask once again at the bar to obtain it after 25 minutes. Furthermore, I had ordered the chef’s salad and with my surprise I found some tiny worms stuck in the back of a salad leaf. They didn’t offer a compensation, and neither did they apologise. Other then that, I can say the rest of the food was nice.

Really beautiful city and a very good location in the old town. The host is amazing and very sweet. We had the best view in town from our hotel room and the balcony outside 👌

Very nice owner and tasty breakfast. We were the only guests and were allowed to choose whichever room we liked. The entrance is a bit hidden as you have to go through the garden of the other hotel to get there.
Liv B — Google review
Lovely host, peaceful area in a central location, maximum 10 minute walk to all main attractions. The breakfast was outstanding, traditional, and probably the best I've ever had. Served on the terrace with fantastic views of the mountains. The room was modern, well decorated, and the bathroom was a very good size. Bed was comfortable. The shower water would take a few minutes to warm up.

Perfect location next to the castle and bazaar. Very clean and charming guesthouse and room. Great service and friendly host. They even helped us to park the car. Delicious breakfast with an amazing view on the castle and mountains. We would stay here again and recommend this place on your visit to Gjirokaster

We had an amazing experience at this guesthouse! The breakfasts were elaborate and delicious, served on the terrace with views of the mountainside town. The rooms were beautifully decorated with modern fixtures and comfortable bed. They have fast wifi and great hot water in the shower. The location is ideal for visitors of the old town interested in seeing the castle, bazaar and skenduli house. Finally, the host is incredibly kind and generous. She went out of her way to make us feel welcome and even helped arrange our transportation to our next destination. This was one of our favourite places we stayed on our trip and we would recommend it to all.

All in all this place was perfect! It was super clean, staff was so incredibly kind and it's placed in the middle of the town. We could not have asked for anything better. Mind you, the parking can be quite difficult (as in most places in Albania) and the front door is a little hidden (in the garden of Gjirokaster hotel)

Love this place whenever I go back. Always full of color, welcoming people and delicious cuisine. Enjoyed a delicious turkish coffee at "Old Town"bar-cafe ,tried the delicious sweet named "oshaf" and bough with the kids some souvenirs.

It's a beautiful place, but the ride to the top was scary. There was a pebbled stoned road which I had to drive on while it was raining and I had to keep going to the top for at least 2.5 minutes in speed 1. There's nowhere to turn or go back. The road was very narrow and other cars were coming down, passing me while I was driving. I was very anxious. When we finally got there, we parked the car and paid 500 lek for 2.5 hours which wasn't too bad. The place was nice and you can admire it in about an hour. I thought it would be bigger. There weren't a lot of vendors with stuff. We had lunch there and headed back to the hotel.
Nydia V — Google review
Beautiful city and busy market. Unfortunately, many shops were filled with cheap tourist souvenirs that were exactly the same as the 4 shops before it. Skip the souvenirs and go for dinner or drinks. Great people watching and some locals playing music on the street.

Visiting the Gjirokastër Bazaar was an incredible experience that transported me back in time. Walking through its narrow cobblestone streets, I was surrounded by Ottoman-era architecture, vibrant shops, and the lively chatter of locals, creating an authentic and charming atmosphere. I loved browsing the stalls filled with traditional crafts, handmade souvenirs, and local delicacies, each offering a glimpse into the region’s culture and history. The mix of colors, scents, and sounds made exploring the bazaar truly immersive and unforgettable. Gjirokastër Bazaar was not just a market—it was a living piece of history and a highlight of my trip.

Cozy little street in ottoman historical fashion. Lots of cheap souvenir stores and basic restaurants with “authentic food” but overall a nice vibe. Walking distance to the castle and Cold War tunnels.

Situated near the Gjirokastra Bazaar, this Mediterranean restaurant is a must-visit for those seeking authentic local flavors. With options ranging from seafood to vegan dishes, Rrapi Restaurant caters to various dietary preferences. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the castle and enjoy a delightful meal at this renowned dining spot.
Rrapi is the best restaurant in town! Service was really good, food was authentic, very local and we enjoyed it so much. Managed by a very nice family, we went to have dinner and everything was delicious. We ate soup, rice balls (typical Albanian), pasta carbonara and red peppers stuffed with ricotta. The portions were nice with a very correct price so I highly recommend Rrapi. You’ll love it.

A few days ago, I visited Gjirokastër with my family and we had both lunch and dinner at Tek Rrapi, a popular and charming family-run restaurant. It was absolutely wonderful — everything was fresh, delicious, and full of the traditional flavors of southern Albania. The prices were very reasonable, and the service from both the owner and the waiters was perfect. Highly recommended!
Ariel V — Google review
We tried a few other restaurants but this one outshined them all for quality and price. 100% family run, the grandma grows the wild cabbage for the delicious Shapkat. It was light and served with yogurt. Great coffee and 1 liter bottles of water available (annoyingly rare in this city). The enormous Sycamore tree shading the terrace was absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend!

Excellent food, atmosphere, and service. The meatballs and sauce were wonderful. However, wherever I go in Albania, I've never been happy with the "fried potatoes". They should be thinner and cooked longer for a crispy texture.

We had a delightful meal at this restaurant. The food was delicious, traditional Albanian fare, with generous portions. Honestly, it was one of the best meals we had while in Albania. The service was exceptionally good. They even wrapped our leftovers for us and kept them refrigerated while we walked around town. If it's very hot, ask about sitting in the cellar, which is nice and cool.

A Must-Go in Gjirokastër! After a week in Albania, we finally found our culinary heaven at Submarine 105 in Gjirokastër! Every dish was a delight. Beyond the fantastic food, the customer service was truly amazing. Our waiter spoke excellent English and was incredibly helpful with recommendations, making our experience even better. The prices are very good too, offering excellent value for such high quality. We stopped at Submarine 105 for a breakfast in Girokastër and we loved it! My boyfriend specifically asked for petulas, eager to try this traditional Albanian donuts. The waiter accepted with no hesitation - while petulas were not proposed on the menu - and a few moments later we were served home-made, hot and crispy petulas, freshly and carefully prepared. We were impressed by the generous portions: 7 petulas for each of us, they were so yummy we had no problem eating them all with honey. Plus, the omelette my boyfriend had was the same level of quality: light, correctly saisoned. We took home-made juices, coffee, soda and water, the best breakfast we had over our journey in Albania! Prices are fair: 2,5€/personne only for petulas 4€ for home-made juice Go ahead, we ❤️ 105

Te Kubé is a charming café and bookshop located under a mosque, offering a delightful experience for visitors. The breakfast menu features local and organic products, with options like omelets, salads, and yogurt with seeds that are praised for their delicious taste. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere of this cozy spot. While alcoholic drinks are not served due to its location under the mosque, the wide variety of fresh juices and coffees make up for it.
Located below the bazaar mosque, this vegetarian cafe not only offers great food, but also a cool place to sit down and relax on hot summer days. I had the soup and a carrot cake. Both were good. The soup could have used just a little more flavor. I did like that it was not too heavy though, as I wanted something light for lunch. The service was super friendly!

Stunning coffee shop library located under the mosque. Great atmosphere, we went to have breakfast and the food was really good. We ordered an omelet and yogurt plus 2 coffees and the bill was 1050 LEK (10,5€). The only reason I don't give him 5 stars is because of the prices as it’s not the cheapest one. Even though, it’s not expensive and I highly recommend it.
David P — Google review
Te Kubé in Gjirokastër was honestly such a vibe. It’s this tiny vegetarian café tucked away in the old town, and everything about it was just so lovely. The food? So good. Like, really good. Super fresh, super tasty. I also had a coffee with soy milk (yes, they have plant-based options!), and it was exactly what we needed. What made it even better was the atmosphere. I don’t know if it was the owner, but the woman who was there was so kind and sweet – really made you feel at home. Actually all of the staff did! There’s also this little shop inside with art pieces by Albanian artists and some vinyls, and it all just feels very carefully put together, in the best way. If you’re in Gjirokastër and want a break from the usual, go there. It’s cozy, creative, delicious — everything at once.

Such a special and unique coffee, breakfast/brunch place. The owner is lovely and has really put her passion and love into this gorgeous cobbled space. Babameto 2 in Gjirokaster is all about the atmosphere! I enjoyed relaxing in their outside sitting area and trying their cocktail menu, which included interesting names like Queen Elizabeth, Helen of Troy, and Juliet Without Romeo. While the cocktails themselves were just okay, the overall vibe of the place was truly excellent. It's a fantastic spot to soak in the Gjirokaster charm and enjoy the ambiance.

My husband and I stopped for coffee, hoping for a pleasant experience. While the coffee itself was enjoyable, the service was deeply disappointing from start to finish. The staff was extremely rude, making us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. When it came time to pay, the waiter insisted on an exorbitant exchange rate. Our bill was 660 Lek, but he demanded an equivalent of 860 Lek for EUR, which was unreasonable. We ended up paying with CC. Ripping clients off its never ok.

As an albanian, this place puts Albanian cuisine to shame. Same owner owns all 3 or 4 stores next to each other. Slightly different menus, but same sluggish and " i have no clue" service. Byrek was, barely average, uncomfortable tables, everything we ordered, but bread n cheese, was below average. We had such a lovely lunch here yesterday! The food was SO GOOD! It came recommended as one of the best traditional restaurants in town. It is down a side street and so it can be easily missed. We had three items from the traditional menu: rice balls, cheese and spinach pie and pasha qofte and salad. The Pasha Qofte was the best thing I have eaten in Albania by far! Highly recommend! Local spot, all the food is delicious. Prepared daily it runs out so I’d try lunchtime again. Beef goulash, stuffed peppers, chow on and potatoes and her home made yogurt. Loved it and the lady that runs it is just lovely!

Definitely one of the best restaurants I have been to in Albania, if you are looking for some real local food and no tourists, this is the place to go to!! The woman who was serving the food was so super nice and friendly, also she gave us as much water as we needed for free! The prices are more than fair and just everything about this restaurant is good!! 😍

The interiors were not very inviting and the restaurant itself is very dark in the evening but I decided to come here based on a travel blog article I read. There were a few things I was interested in trying but unfortunately they were sold out for the day so I’d definitely look into coming here at lunch time to have more options. I decided to go with the stuffed peppers and both that dish and the salad (basic but perfect) were so so delicious and some of the best I’ve had. The lady who took my order was also very friendly. Awesome (low) prices for the quality and amount of food you get — I’d highly recommend!!

Absolutely loved this place! We ate here twice on our stay in Gjirokastër. Food was delicious - probably the best we have had in Albania and the owner was so nice to us, even though we had a difficult time communicating. Would highly recommend the soups, baked cheese and stuffed peppers. Also the best raki we have had and a very generous pour 😉

Arrived here very hungry and left full and satisfied. Offers excellent value for money. Enjoyed the chicken soup and the beef goulash. There was a lot of oregano on the chips which wasn’t to our liking, but we’ve come to learn that is the norm in Albania!

The lady serving the food was exceptionally friendly. The food was both affordable and satisfying, making it a great value for the price. Highly recommended! 🥰

Stumbled across this local spot and had a great meal here. Based on the price, we ordered 4 dishes and barely finished it - best value we've had in Albania - and absolutely delicious! Highly recommend the lamb in yoghurt. There was a great amount of meat and super tender. Well worth the walk down the hill if you're staying in the Old Town

This is a very authentic and delicious place to try the local food. The food was made by a very nice elder couple. Even though they didn’t speak English, you can figure out from the English menu. Fresh food with good price. Several local people came and went during my dinner time. I’ll definitely visit again next time!

Antigonea 2000 is a delightful stop just a short drive from Gjirokaster, nestled within the recently designated National Archaeological Park. While the remnants of this ancient city may be few, the impressive walls and Epirote House with its striking columns are certainly worth exploring. The surrounding area boasts other historical landmarks like the Byzantine church in Labove and stunning natural attractions such as the mesmerizing Blue Eye and Zagoria Valley.
Best byrek we have had of the trip!!! Was amazing. 10/10 recommend and only 100 Lek for one. Freddo espresso was 200 Lek and very strong but delicious

We tried to go to Antigonea 2000 in the morning but we didn't have money, we had huge bills and nothing small. Later in the day we were able to get change and went back. The employee remembered us! We were happy to be there and she was happy for us. We got some boreks, Lakror which is spinach thin latered pie and a kachapuri like pastry with cheese in the middle. This place was so good, we came here a 2nd time to get more pastries. Amazing place. Cash only no card or contactless payments. Our total cost was 330 ALL or 3.3 EUR.

Wow, wow, wow! Never had such amazing cakes before. The cakes come with some very nice decorations. The taste is amazing and the price is super cheap for the piece of art that you get. We came back the next day to have some more cakes 😍😍

Bed & breakfast
Nestled halfway up a hill, Bed and Breakfast Kotoni offers a charming and tastefully decorated guesthouse managed by a hospitable young family. The complimentary breakfast is hailed as the best in Albania, with stunning views across the valley towards Gjirokastra Castle. Guests praise the warm welcome and helpful recommendations from the owners, who go above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay.
Great hotel, not only is it very clean, the rooms are very pleasant, and it is perfectly located just 5 minutes from the historic heart of Gjirokastër. Additionally, the hosts are really lovely and warm people; they are attentive. We got lost in the city, and they came to pick us up and bring us to the hotel. Despite the city’s complex streets, once you understand them, it’s easy to access. To top it off, they have a restaurant, and the food is exceptional; there is no better value for money! Breakfast is included, and it is delicious!

My husband and I had a really lovely 2 night stay here! Our room was spacious, the AC worked well, the bathroom was clean and very modern! The walk from the bus station was a solid 30 minutes and very much up steep hills, but we were met with kindness and patience from the worker. Breakfast each morning was an incredible spread!! The views are stunning! A great stay!

I stayed at a single room it was clean and view was nice. The rooms are air conditioned. Bathrooms could be a little bigger. The location was nice if you go there with taxi in the first place 😅 its between the old bazaar and castle so it was easy to go both 👍🏻but going there from the center on foot would be a torture its all uphill so i suggest taking a taxi especially if you have heavy bags or luggage The breakfast was nice but it would be better if there is butter instead of margarine 🤷🏻‍♀️

From the moment we arrived at Hotel Kotoni in the heart of Gjirokastër, we were greeted with such warmth and hospitality that it instantly felt like home. The staff are incredibly kind, welcoming, and always ready to help with a genuine smile—true Albanian hospitality at its finest. The location is absolutely perfect—peacefully tucked away yet just a short walk from all the main attractions, including the historic old town and the iconic Gjirokastër Castle. Whether you’re exploring the cobbled streets or enjoying the mountain views, everything is easily accessible from here. The cleanliness of the hotel truly stood out. Our room was spotless, beautifully maintained, and very comfortable. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere. This hotel is a hidden gem that offers not just a place to stay, but a genuine experience of local warmth, comfort, and culture. I wholeheartedly recommend Hotel Kotoni to anyone visiting Gjirokastër—you won’t be disappointed!

The most amazing experience here. The owners are so welcoming, loving, and so hospitable, it’s very heartwarming. The owner’s son was kind enough, not only to recommend me nearby spots but also walk me to them! + I woke up late missing breakfast, yet, the owner was sooooo kind, she quickly whipped me up an entire spread for breakfast. Such people make solo travel easy, give you moments to remember, and make the whole experience of travel alone safe and comfy! Thank you so much to the owners of Kotoni 🙏🏼

I recommend this B&B Kotoni . Owners are very friendly, the place is almost 350 years old and carries on a special piece of history. The hosts are such lovely people. We miss them already. They are very generous with the guests. We had a great room with views of the castle and the mountains. The location is perfect with a short reach to the Bazar, the Citadel and other sights. The breakfast was traditional and delicious, and served with love. We will be back here.

Located in short walking distance to all main sights in town, this place features some basic but very cozy rooms. WiFi was good. Breakfast (served next door) was mostly lovely. The host was super helpful and arranged s bus trip to Greece for us. Some amenities were already a little run down, e. g. the toilet flush. It made a really loud and creepy noise after each flushing, which could wake others if one uses it during the night. For breakfast it would be great to be offered a choice before just being served with omelet (which was tasty though) and tea (I like coffee better).

Restaurant
Bar Restaurant Kerculla is a popular dining spot in Gjirokaster, known for its uphill location that offers stunning city views. While the 30-minute walk up the hill is an option, it's recommended to take a taxi due to the steep incline and lack of proper sidewalk. The restaurant boasts top-notch service with responsive and quick waitstaff. The menu features delicious risotto and reasonably priced Italian wine.
We had lunch here after lounging at the pool the whole day. We got the traditional mix for around LEK1,200 as well as some drinks. Delicious food, beautiful views and great service. The waiters were all very friendly and chatty. Would definitely recommend!
Michelle K — Google review
We were staying at Kerculla Resort for 2 nights and had lunch twice in the restaurant. The food was good (soup and salads both days). Prices were higher that local restaurants in the old town, but that's to be expected in a resort hotel. The Kerculla restaurant upstairs was beautifully decorated and had amazing views. Beers and wines were well priced. Service was pretty slow, as it was everywhere else in the hotel. They seem very short staffed which impacted upon service hugely. Bottled water was served to us and charged for without any consultation which I found a bit needless. On our second visit, we charged our meal to our room at the request of the waiter serving us. When we settled the bill at the end of out stay, I noticed the waiter had added a tip without our consent. The money itself wasn't an issue, but it was the principle

This is the 3rd time I've visited this restaurant in 5 years, nothing has changed, the staff is good and very friendly, with a vigilant manager who is always on his feet to take care of everything. Then the food is a 10, it's just as good every time you go, I highly recommend it, if you visit Gjirokastra and don't go to this restaurant you will only remember the taste of the eyes and not the taste of the mouth 🤣

Drive up there is quite challenging. Gorgeous view, good food, prices are above average which is to be expected with the view. Waiters were friendly but need more training. One of the waiters was watching videos on his phone with the sound on which is a no go and took away from the otherwise nice ambience.

Transportation service
Upon arriving in Gjirokaster by bus, travelers will be taken to the Regional Bus & Furgon Station located in the lower part of the new town. This informal stop resembles a road stop with a few ticket offices available. The station provides accurate schedules and a cashier for purchasing tickets, which are assigned specific seat numbers. However, it's important to note that there is no air conditioning on board, making the interior quite hot.
It is advisable to arrive at the bus station 30 minutes before the departure in order to be seated. It is also advisable to go to the bus station the day before to check the timetable, if you have time. Someone will be there to help you. # Albania
T. G — Google review
Just your ordinary congregation of busses on the streets and not a "bus station" per SE, as those of us from Europe or other Western countries would associate with the name. It can be a little overwhelming and confusing at first because it is so informal, and determining which bus one needs is a matter of circulating and asking questions. I usually get 2 opinions to be on the safe side! Also, if traveling to Gjirokaster, like we were be forewarned about misinformation from the hoard of taxi drivers haunting the area. They will say there is no bus to Gjirokaster because they want to charge $40 Euros or more to drive you there. There is at the minimum a bus that leaves from Saranda just by the Toer Hotel, daily at about 11AM. There are multiple busses back from Gjirokaster about hourly beginning at 0800 or 0900. We returned on the 1000 and we understood the last bus to be at 1700. However, the way the busses seem to work, it is necessary to spend the night or multiple nights as we and others have done. There is no good bus service where you can go up early, spend and significant time in the city, and return the same day as far as we could tell. As with all things in developing countries, just keep asking until you find the answer, you probably won't find an answer on line.
Phae D — Google review
Next to the main roundabout, which is correctly marked here on Google maps, go thru the blue gate. Some guys will probably ask if you are going to sarande. For Berat, walk past them and the small cafe, on the right side of the cafe building there is a small office that sells tickets (also to other places like saranda and Tirana). 1000 lek for Berat at 830am. The bus is one of those large vans you walk past at the entrance, it should have a sign with destination in the windshield. If you are going to sarande and don't want to deal with the guys trying to sell you tickets or taxis at the gate, you can tell them you already bought a ticket and keep walking, since tourists who buy tickets online still have to go to the ticket office to show their receipt and get an actual ticket.
J L — Google review
worst experience we had in albania. tons of aggressive taxi drivers that kept hounding even though we refused multiple times. not much of a waiting area. also bus schedule not accurate! we called the agency day before and was told the bus leaves every hour to saranda, but when we got there at 11, the next bus was at 2. ended up squashed in a scam minibus that packed 9 people for a supposed 6 seater.. avoid if you can!!
Krystal — Google review
To be completely honest, I am not 100% sure where the station actually is. We got dropped off at the gas station side when coming from Tirana. When going back to Tirana we were on the other side. There is an office to buy tickets on this side so I’m assuming this is the correct place. Also toilets are available for use, not sure if you have to pay but my partner did not have to. Small lobby area where you can wait but not too big.
Josh B — Google review
We had a good experience. We got the 9am to Saranda. We got there about 8:30 and it was already there. Try to avoid all the taxis and fake furgons and make sure you’re at this station inside the gates. The bus should have the destination on the windshield. As of June 2024, it was 400 LEK each which is paid directly to the driver.
Kate T — Google review
Don’t believe taxi drivers saying that there’s no bus on weekends! They have buses go to blue eye, destination is Sarande. One way is 400 lek

Bus company
The Gjirokaster bus station, located about a 25-minute stroll from the charming Old Town, serves as a vital hub for travelers looking to explore nearby destinations. Nestled on the east side of the road, it can be a bit tricky to navigate due to varying bus schedules, especially for routes like Saranda. It's advisable to double-check departure times since information can often be inconsistent.
This review is for a driver (Florence) rather than the actual station We were dropped off at the Station which is a little out if the way as expected. We left the bus from Saranda and our plan was to get the local bus to the main Bazaar, but that proved more difficult than we thought. A guy approached us offering to drive us stating we wasn't a taxi, but a local driver. His English is perfect. Despite our concerns, we accepted his offer to drive us to our accommodation, (we felt a bit 'lost'). I then remembered we needed to buy tickets for our journey the next day to Berat. This is when things took a turn for the better. He has an office at the station and sorted our tickets for the next day. In addition he liaised with our accommodation arrange a meeting spot (there is a limit how far cars can go). I don't think we'd have found it without this help as our hosts spoke no English and it was in a tiny alleyway. He did this with the other passengers too. We shared the car with a few others who were dropped at various locations en route. He also stated he'd collect us for our bus the next morning. He went above and beyond to help us. I left my bottle and hat in the office and he duly brought it back the next morning. He's definitely a 'character' and we found him extremely funny, chatty with great banter. He's quite hyper and navigated the narrow streets with ease and seemed to know everyone en route 🤣 He picked us up in the morning as promised, keeping in touch via WhatsApp and got us on our way to Berat. We had a bit of a problem in Berat, so I called Florence and handed my phone over. In no time, our problem was gone. I don't know what was said, but whatever it was, it got things sorted 😁 He didn't have to do this for us, but we really appreciate his commitment to pleasing visitors to Albania. The cost was 500 lek each per journey, so 2000 lek total plus the price of the the bus tickets (same as web price, no commission). I don't know if a taxi would've been cheaper, but I do know we would not have met such a great guy who made us laugh non stop and we certainly would not have got in to our accommodation as efficiently... nor would we have known how to get back to the station in the morning. So if you arrive at Gjirokaster station and are approached by FloDriver, go with the Flo 🙏🏼

Fico House is a remarkable yellow building, the only one of its kind in town. It was once the residence of Raul Fico, who served as Minister of the Interior in Albania in 1912. This octagonal two-story structure with a dome on top has a rich history, originally serving as a bektashi khanqah dating back to 1727. Although it was closed during the communist era, it now functions as a Koranic school.

It is not possible to visit due to the great deterioration it is suffering from. It is essential to carry out an urgent rehabilitation (Original) Una casa meravellosa, la única pintada de groc. Room click inn offers cozy and well-equipped rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning, and TVs. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touch of providing flip flops for use in the shower. Each room has a separate entrance for added privacy and convenience.
Lovely stay at Click inn. Location is close to the old town. Air condition, little fridge, TV, quiet area and friendly hostess. We recommend!

Very nice place, we took a little room with the bathroom. There is air conditioning and a TV. What we noticed is an Albanian thing to do is that they leave you flip flops to use under shower which we found really considerate. There is a separate entrance to the room just for you to use.

(Translated by Google) We spent one night here and we must admit that the place met our expectations. Although the rooms are a bit cramped, you don't need anything else for such a short stay. Everything was clean and well-kept, you can see that the owners care about order. The facility itself has a pleasant, homely atmosphere, and its main advantage are the incredibly nice and helpful owners. We had a small incident - I scratched the car slightly and the owner reacted quickly. He helped me find a local painter who solved the problem at a reasonable price, and the owner also lent us his garage. We really appreciate such support and highly recommend this place! Mieliśmy mały incydent – zarysowałam delikatnie samochód, a pan właściciel szybko zareagował. Pomógł mi znaleźć lokalnego lakiernika, który rozwiązał problem w rozsądnej cenie, a dodatkowo właściciel użyczył nam swojego garażu. Naprawdę doceniamy takie wsparcie i serdecznie polecamy to miejsce!

(Translated by Google) Great room, especially for the price you pay. We slept well in the bed, air conditioning worked very well too. Shower was fine, just not really a curtain or cabin but just next to the toilet (we already knew that in advance). The hostess was sweet even though she did not speak very good English. Location is our only downside, it is a fifteen minute walk to the old center and it is quite a steep climb there. Tried it with the car first but didn't do it! There are narrow roads and we almost went wrong a number of times, because we had nowhere to park and maps gave routes that were not possible at all (because it was a staircase instead of a motorway...).

Bus tour agency
If you're planning a trip from Saranda to Gjirokastër, the bus service is quite convenient and straightforward. The first bus departs at 8 AM, with subsequent departures throughout the day. The journey typically takes just over an hour and costs around 400-500 LEK, making it an affordable option for travelers. Buses leave from a spot near the gas station in Saranda, so it's wise to arrive early as they may depart ahead of schedule if they're not full.
You have to consult the timetable there. Sometimes drivers come and go on demand so even if it says that at 14:30 is the last bus to Sarande we did get one at 16:00. Prices are ok, it’s an hour and 20 minutes trip and it costs 500 Lek (~5€). Reasonable. You won’t find the timetables in google maps so you do have to go there and talk to the lady or whoever is in charge at that time.

(Translated by Google) Bus left opposite the gas station for Sarande. We wanted to take the bus at 11:15 and were there around 10:50. The bus wasn't full yet and still left at 11:05 a.m. Better be there earlier!
