Casa da Cultura de Pernambuco is a vibrant cultural center in Recife, offering local crafts, cultural performances, and a rich historical experience. The building was originally a prison but has been transformed into a hub of art and culture with 150 craft shops. Visitors can explore the three cell galleries interconnected by steep staircases, each housing diverse cultural offerings.
Former prison converted into a crafts market. Lots of tourist trinkets and artisanal items for sale. Each cell has been converted into a small store. Free entry. Cell #106 has been preserved as it was, with prisoners' carvings still on the walls.
Josiah W — Google review
Great place for souvenirs and local art. It is an old prison and each store is in one cell. Most stores sell items that you can find in other cells as well but some have exclusive items. A few vendors get a bit too pushy to get us inside their stores and it can get very warm inside the building too, but other than that it's a great experience.
Stella ( — Google review
A nice tourist spot for handicrafts or even getting a drink or snacks. It was originally a prison and each vendor occupies a prison cell, most of them are beautifully decorated. It doesn’t look big through the entrance it but once you are inside, you will see the long, seem like never ending hallway
Grace L — Google review
Interesting place, but not much to see beside the shops which all sell the same stuff. However, good food stall in one of the side arms

Shopping Recife is a vibrant and expansive shopping destination that has been delighting visitors for over 30 years. With more than 400 stores, it offers a mix of local and international brands, making it the perfect place to indulge in some retail therapy. The mall also boasts an impressive array of entertainment options, including a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, and various food courts that cater to every palate.
Very very big shopping. Looks good and clean. It has many shops with excellent prices and good quality.

First thing first, Ample parking 🅿️ space available for 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers. Hell a lot of space inside. Maintained nice and clean. The staff is very cooperative. Purchased a bag and actually i had a lot of options to see there. The food court is on the top floor. Ordered some bites also and enjoyed.

I am not really a person that likes Malls, but this was a great experience. The mall is very well laid out. It is huge. There is a tremendous variety of stores. Some very beautiful stores. Many options for food and snacks. We felt very safe each time we went. We went several times during our trip.

Nestled in the heart of Recife, the Capela Dourada, or Golden Chapel, is a stunning testament to Baroque architecture and religious devotion. Established on May 13, 1696, by Captain General Caetano de Melo Castro and constructed under the skilled hands of master mason Antonio Fernandes de Matos, this chapel was completed remarkably quickly. By September 15, 1697—just sixteen months later—it opened its doors to worshippers with great ceremony.
Nice chapel with lots of paintings and gilded carvings. To access, enter the small unmarked door in between the two churches (image attached). 15 reais. Note that you can also see the chapel for free, from inside the church (but just through a fence).
Josiah W — Google review
Spectacular must see in the centre of Recife. Pernambuco was the richest par of Brazil during colonial times, because of the sugar industry. Sugar was exported through port of Recife. Merchants that exported the sugar had their club - ordem terceira. And they created this chapel as a gathering room for the members of the club and guests. Fascinating history and very well preserved and presented. Costs 15 reais only and there there were volunteers giving all the explanations about the space in Portuguese
Jan L — Google review
Not really worth visiting, unless you are very interested in the Franciscan order and its establishment in Brazil. Lots of baroque wood carving and gold plate. Strange diorama of St Francis and the pope, accompanied by several female saints, who looked like characters in a horror movie. We didn’t take any photos.
Alexander G — Google review
Worth the visit. Very helpful and knowledgeable lay franciscans at the door itching to show you around. Pretty wild stuff, from gold covered walls (not sure how that jives with the poverty vow, but didn't ask ..) to paintings of crucified priests. Definitely worth the visit.

Malakoff Tower, a 19th-century observatory and gateway to Arsenal da Marinha square, is a historical landmark in Recife. Named after a similar monument in the Crimean peninsula, it was initially part of the Marine base territory but later transformed into a cultural hub. The tower offers regular astronomy sessions and diverse cultural exhibits, making it one of the best places to visit in the Old Town.

(Translated by Google) One of the city's most important cultural facilities, located in a strategic location. Like so many others managed by the government, it has its good and bad phases, but it never receives the care it deserves. There is rust everywhere and the space on the ground floor, which was so well used in the past, is now rarely used.

(Translated by Google) Simple and straightforward. It features art of various types, photography exhibitions, and displays on cultural elements. Access from the top is a bit difficult due to the staircase, which has very high and short steps, but this is part of the building's architecture, so there's not much that can be done since it's a listed building. I recommend going in the late afternoon when it's quieter. Another positive point was the Braille captions for the exhibited works for visually impaired people. Something I found different from other nearby museums. (Original) Simples e direto.

The Gentleman Loser Pub is a nice bar with a good diversity of drinks and people. It is very trendy, almost always full. The pub has special promotions like free entrance and cocktails for less than 10 reais until midnight.
I went there only once, for their oktober fest cellebration. The staff is great, and for this day even one of the owners was there talking to the costumers. The event brought a large variety of beers (brands and craft beer), with some of the regional crafters even there to explain their creation an all. The was also a beer drinking contest, with prizes. It was a fun day. There is a jukebox, where costumers can define the playlist (love that), some televisions for soccer days, bar benchs witch are fun. The decoration is amazing, very pub style and I do believe is a great place to go anyttime. There is a pokestop near enough so you can get from inside the bar, but no outlets (unfortunatelly).

Clube Metrópole stands out as a premier nightlife destination, especially for the LGBTQ+ community in the city. This vibrant club offers an exhilarating experience with its multiple stages featuring a mix of energetic beats and European-style music, ensuring that every visitor finds their groove. The atmosphere is inclusive and welcoming, making it a haven for those who appreciate diversity. With themed parties that pulse with electric energy, Clube Metrópole keeps the dance floor alive well into the night.
Was here last Saturday for a party and this place is awesome. Multiple stages, also 1 with more European style music, big outdoor area with enough seating and even a pool. The people there where nice and some of them even spoke English :) Drinks where affordable enough. It wasn't super handy for the flow at the bar that they had there own currency. Because of this the staff had to count a lot of 2 real/dollar, Metropole currency, bills when you bought multiple drinks. But it did feel a bit like monopoly money, which might have been the whole idea. On a personal note: it was a shame the girl who I was with turned out to have some issues, possibly mental health related. Or maybe that's just the (in)famous South American temperament. I'm still not sure. I spend a lot of time trying to calm her down. Because of this I wasn't able to dance all the time but otherwise I'm sure I would have done that. Would definitely recommend going to a party here.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere is great: well structured, with good acoustics, and large bathrooms that are always clean, but it makes a big mistake by not offering stools around the bar (if there were about 6 in total it was a lot) and offering all the tables for reservation... no. There's no point in arriving early. The food is good, but it's a bit expensive. There were items on the menu that were not being offered and that not even the waiters recognized by the name that was written or knew how to give basic information, such as “what is the portion size?”, which I think is a lack of preparation. It has a lot of potential, but still needs to improve.

(Translated by Google) Horrible experience, show scheduled for 8:00 pm, we got there at 7:50 pm and they only let us in at 8:30 pm, ticket prices are cheap and they make up for it in the exorbitant prices for drinks or food, a small portion of potatoes fries for R$ 29.90, it was 22:15 and nothing had started yet, the bands were still testing microphones and equipment, I left the venue and asked Sympla for a refund. Very cozy place, but totally unprepared.

(Translated by Google) Very good place! Spacious and comfortable, those who want to be closer to the band can go close to the stage and dance on the dance floor. The food is good, although it takes a while to come out. We arrived in a large group, around 1 am and there was a huge table, which easily fit all of us, and we were told that it was reserved, so we couldn't use it. We stayed until 3am and no one sat in it. There should be a time limit for booking. Furthermore, everything was very organized and clean. Entrance costs R$50.00, and there is a menu of snacks and drinks. The facade is very discreet and organized, I just missed a place to sit to wait for transport. There is also a space on the mezzanine, which I didn't get to check out.

Don’t use the guide tour, they are scammers! Old town feels like being abandoned with lots of homeless. Don’t feel very secure to walk around. Don’t use any guide tour! They said one hour walk tour, 50 BRL per person. During the tour, there was very little introduction and walking very fast to rush us, took us to shops so they get commission fee, but we actually don’t buy anything. And after finish, they asked 50% more, and insisted cash!!! We don’t want to risk our security since they are a bunch of guides around us and push us to pay! They are the scammers!

Oficina Ceramica Francisco Brennand is a museum and workshop dedicated to the renowned Brazilian plastic artist, Francisco Brennand. The site was originally an old family pottery that the artist transformed into a temple of art, showcasing his own works since 1971. Visitors can explore nearly 2,000 pieces including ceramics, sculptures, and paintings primarily centered around themes like sexuality.
The place is amazing, the amount of incredible art pieces is astonishing. Entry fee 50R.
Sindulyi S — Google review
One of the most remarkable and interesting art galleries we have ever visited. Francisco Brennand must have been a weird, obsessive, wildly creative guy to conceive such an ambitious and extensive display of his work. The ceramic sculptures are creative and bizarre, mostly monochromatic and very imaginative. There are elements of Picasso, and Geiger. Some are quite creepy, some are strangely erotic. Even if you are not an art lover you will be blown away.
Alexander G — Google review
What an amazing place. Such an unusual setting for an art gallery. The grounds and the factory buildings were amazing and the gentle music added to the atmosphere. Such an extensive collection of artwork. www.thehungrytravellers.blog

The place is nice, but it’s lacking a guided tour or posters with explanations. You feel lost inside, not knowing where to start or what’s the story of the place. It’s also very expensive to get in, 60 BRL. The coffee shop could have decent coffee

This is a must-visit place in Recife if you like modern, daring art. Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão is a modern museum located in Recife Antigo, serving as a celebration of the music of singer-composer Luiz Gonzaga and the culture of Northeastern Brazil. The museum, which was once old port warehouses, pays tribute to the stories of the Brazilian people. It offers an interactive experience about the Sertao and Luiz Gonzaga, making it one of the most beautiful cultural centers in South America.
I was alarmed that the building used to be an old disabled warehouse: it is completely beautiful! It's walking distance from the Marco Zero square and a nice place to bring children. They have all sorts of art installations (paintings, scenarios, sculptures, music, videos, etc) and interactive games to honor the people of Sertão Nordestino, specially in Pernambuco. There is also a tribute to Luiz Gonzaga, a famous Brazilian forró (and other genres) singer. A lot of volunteers work there and I think it's awesome to value your own culture. There is also a space for events if need to book one.
Graziella B — Google review
Nice and lovely museum. For Brazilian standards it is a very good museum. The collection is nice and it is nice you can try the different instruments of forro. This improves the understanding of the music significant and I liked it a lot, the music guy was explaining everything and even could speak English very well.
F. N — Google review
I went here years ago when it had just opened and it was GREAT. Now, years later, the place is falling apart. Literally half of the museum is ‘under maintenance’. The whole upper floor is closed, several exhibits are gone and the floor is full of holes. Very sad. Recife and Pernambuco, if you are proud of your culture and heritage (and you should be), invest in this museum and make it great again. Do it for Luiz!
Vj V — Google review
Beautiful small museum, huge tribute to ‘sertão’, to being Nordestino, being Brazilian. Poetry, music and inspiration is everywhere. For free.
Ana — Google review
This place was incredible, however multiple pieces were missing or under maintenance which made my experience a bit unpleasant. I still learned a lot about the "sertão", Pernambuco's country side affected by drought and their difficult life. I hope the maintenance ends soon so we can have access to the other parts of the museum.
Stella ( — Google review
It is a very interesting cultural space, particularly for Brazilians. It tells the story of Luiz Gonzaga, a famous 20th century singer and musician who took regional music to national and international audiences. Some of the audiovisual equipment is not working properly, but it is worth a visit. There is a small entrance fee.
Carlos Q — Google review
Nice experience, brings good knowledge and understanding with the visit.
Pedro R — Google review
There is no way this place is 4,7 stars. One might say it does a greet job of reflecting Recife and Pernambuco’s perpetually broken nature, as most exhibits were broken despite its relative newness. Exhibits were either too wordy and detailed or too broad and disconnected. attractive in look but lacking substance and a rip off at any price

it's a small museum about Frevo, there's nothing special, first time I went there the 3rd floor was closed, but they opened it the last time I went. the entrance is 10 reais and the 3rd floor has a beautiful view and it's good for pictures, they tried to make a room for pictures on the 1st floor but the light isn't good so it's not really good for taking pictures.
Iury M — Google review
Sooo beautiful and colorful and the view is amazing. I really enjoyed. 🤍❤️
Vitor D — Google review
It's a small museum on the Frevo tradition, a dance. You will find lots of information on the emergence of the musical genre in the form of words written on the walls and the glass. If you don't mind reading and have a decent understanding of Portuguese, I definitely recommend walking in here. For the more audio-visual people, there are some spaces with videos for you to watch on favela culture. Moreover, there's plenty of old carnival banners for you to look at. For the price of 10 Reais this place is definitely worth it.
Arturo G — Google review
Must see in Recife! It's like a journey through history thanks to music, and everything has English translation!
Red P — Google review
Less writing, more dancing, please. I visited the museum about Frevo in Recife and I still don't know what Frevo music sounds like and what the dancing looks like. I went in rooms with lots and lots of writing on the walls. There are some pictures, and a few artifacts. These exhibits told us that this is a profound Perambucano cultural heritage, and it moves people deeply and is a part of the roots of the region. But it didn't show that. But there was not one single video or demonstration or anything showing what the actual dance looked like, and no place that I found that played the music. A lot of photos, which is good, but for a museum about dancing?

Unfortunately, a lot of homeless people chose this spot to beg for money and food - the first one we bought a big order of fries, but it was soon getting way too much (someone asking for money every 20 minutes). The good rating is probably valid for the tables inside, but I can't recommend the outdoor area at all.

Sabor do Bonfim Pizza Bar is a charming pizzeria located in the historic site of Olinda. They offer homemade dough and sauces as a base for their traditional and unique pizza toppings, such as pepperoni with mozzarella or shredded cod, onions, olives, and oregano. The pizzas are priced at R$43.90 for eight slices. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful pink colonial building and provides an elegant setting for enjoying wine and viewing local art exhibits.
(Translated by Google) 1000 points for everything, the pizza is delicious, one of the best I've ever had. The dough is excellent, and the portions are well-stocked. We ordered the pepperoni and garlic pizza, which was very good. The service is great, the staff is super friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is very cozy, and at night it looks beautiful with the lights. I'm really curious about the other items on the menu, I'll be back to try them. A true gem in Olinda. A massa é excelente, bem servida. (Translated by Google) I have mixed feelings about this pizzeria. I ate two amazing pizzas here, which convinced me to come back on the all-you-can-eat day. It was a disaster. It was nothing like the pizza I had eaten just two weeks before. They were all horrible, different dough, different ingredients, and the service was terrible and slow. I left feeling frustrated. The atmosphere, however, is excellent. (Original) Sentimentos conflitantes sobre essa pizzaria. Aqui eu comi duas pizzas maravilhosas e incríveis, me convenceram a voltar no dia do rodízio. Todas horríveis, massa diferente, ingredientes diferentes e atendimento ruim e super demorado. (Translated by Google) A 0% inclusive place. All dishes contain dairy, and when we asked for a filet to be made with ONLY the sauce on the side, they said it wasn't allowed. A sauce that only comes on top of the filet shouldn't be served separately. *Update: The restaurant's response only reinforces my point. Before, I thought it was just the waiter, but now we see that the problem stems from the top down. If a customer asks to remove the sauce, they OBVIOUSLY know it will change the flavor and are willing to pay for it. We should simply ask about EVERYTHING with or without dairy. Be proactive. If someone comes in with dietary restrictions, immediately point out everything that can be prepared for that customer, so the customer doesn't have to guess or ask the waiter what can or can't contain dairy, or if the restaurant can even provide the basics of preparing the dish so that the person with the restriction can consume and spend their money at your restaurant. My wife, besides being a food engineer, has a degree in gastronomy, so we knew what we were asking for. I'm changing the grade now that I see the problem is bigger than we thought. (Original) Lugar 0% inclusivo.

Nestled in the heart of Recife, the Mercado de São José stands as a vibrant testament to local culture and history. This bustling covered market is Brazil's oldest, dating back to 1875, showcasing a stunning neoclassical design with its iconic cast-iron structure. Visitors can wander through an array of stalls offering everything from tropical fruits and fresh produce to unique artisanal crafts like woven baskets and clay sculptures.
Good market place but go early on the morning as they typically start closing around afternoon, good fish market with local catch. Some stands with local products including cachaca. Worth visit at your convenience, you will find what you was looking for at good price.

Dirty and a lot of stands that sell all the same stuff. Still, it's a place for tourists to go to, especially foreign tourists. There are a lot of souvenirs here that cost at least double in souvenir stores. Most of the people selling are really friendly and helpful. Fruit and vegetables outside are cheap, and often of a very good quality. For tourists be careful not to carry a lot of money or other valuables in this part of the city.
D. M — Google review
There is a large variety of produce for sale at a somewhat accessible price. The infrastructure does not seem to be good, though. The smell of fish at some points is unbearable (for those who dislike it), and the organisation of the place could improved.

An 18th Century gift from France. A replica of a French market. Built in the heart of colonial Recife, now standing in the middle of the hustle and bustle of popular commerce. The market and its surroundings serve the dual purpose of selling food and groceries, as well as that of a great place for tourists to taste original northeastern good and drinks and to buy arts and crafts. Very near the ocean and old port, and not far from the "Old Downtown".
DilenePMenezes — Google review
Authentic street market with lots of indoor artisanry shops and many stands with vegetables, fruits, spices, snacks, meat, poultry and seafood. The earlier you go the better. Expect the messiness and hectic ambiance of any third world street market. I wouldn't recommend it for the infirm, families with pets, small children or toddlers. Vendors only speak Brazilian Portuguese. Great for getting a legit taste of life from the point of view of local working class people. Much better to go with a person who has been there before.

The international club is a historical environment, but it has no preparation for events with a public of over 700 people, the bathrooms are quite bad, and especially the dressing rooms ... the stage area is very small, making it impossible for bands with a bigger stage presence to use it ... the open area is the greater part of the total space of the place, but we live in a situation of high temperatures, and this causes a discomfort in this place, because they do not now turn on a ventilation of the environment.

(Translated by Google) The place is very good. The only complaints are: the smell from the street was unpleasant, in addition to leaks on the outside of the establishment and, when it rains, it also wets those sitting near the sidewalk, as the roof does not provide protection. I recommend a small awning in these cases. The bean broth is great, the bathrooms are clean, the waiters are always passing by the tables, cold soda and beer, juice sweetened just right. Kingdom cheese pie is very good. Just pay attention to the oil in the fries.

(Translated by Google) We went on a Tuesday, as a group. My order arrived quickly, while my friends' took a while, but everything was well served and the caipifruta was huge, which is an extra point for that. The service was good, but nothing special. We sat outside because it can get quite noisy inside when there's a band, but for those who like it, it's ok. We'll be back again! (Translated by Google) The atmosphere is very beautiful and cozy, but there is a detail in the interior of the space that is unfortunately very cramped. I don't know if there is a limit, but when it's after 9 pm, the atmosphere gets cramped. It gets a little complicated to get through. The prices of drinks and food are almost standard compared to other establishments in the same segment, but it's worth going. There is a live show with artistic cover charge (amount to be paid when closing the final bill).

Guests can enjoy artisanal cocktails and diverse music genres in this open space venue. While some areas may benefit from air conditioning and improved emergency exits, the overall experience promises unforgettable moments.

Within a month, which could be sooner, Stenio Kyrillos opens the club in a new space, on Rua da Concórdia, close to the Galo da Madrugada headquarters. The proposal, however, will be the same, of good music until dawn, open space, artistic interventions and no VIP area. The scheme will operate in a two-story building. The ground floor, with capacity for 1,500 people, will only be open for larger events. Stenio's idea is to hold at least one show per month. On the first floor, in an area of 300 square meters, will be the dance floor; and in the second, the famous roof, with tables, bar and open space. The ambience includes graffiti by Galo de Souza – other artists will also be invited to compose the space. The party productions, as in the past, will be led by Stenio himself, with the help of Eduardo Duarte and Guilherme Menezes. At the end of the day, we stopped for a coffee at Armazém do Porto and I can say with certainty that I had never been treated so badly in a place as I was in this place. When we finished our snack, I paid at the cafeteria and left, but I soon returned to go to the bathroom, and the guard forbade me from using it. I was in disbelief. I had spent a considerable amount of money there and they wouldn't let me use the bathroom. I insisted that I be allowed to use the bathroom and he rudely said that I couldn't. I thought it was so absurd that I had to go to the cafeteria where I had eaten and told him what was happening. The manager had to go with me and tell the guard to let me use it. It was an absurd situation that left a terrible impression of Recife. If it weren't for the incredible and nice people I met on the trip, I would never return. I can't generalize a person's attitude. It may seem silly, some might say, but the fact is that there aren't many people willing to go down the wooden bridge, which is too steep for the elderly, putting them at risk of slipping. This is just my opinion; no one has to agree. My goal here is to encourage critical thinking and thus help improve the services offered to everyone.
