Padang restaurant
Family restaurant
For foodies chasing authentic flavors, Simpang Raya is a must-try in Bukittinggi. Every plate showcases the soul of Minangkabau cooking: rendang packed with spices and tenderness, ayam pop that melts in your mouth, and gulai ikan with a creamy, flavorful broth. The restaurant itself feels warm and welcoming, with service that’s fast and attentive, so you can focus on enjoying the meal. Whether you’re exploring the city or just want a reliable spot for classic Padang dishes, Simpang Raya delivers a dining experience that’s worth coming back to again and again.
Kuciang D — Google review
Simpang Raya Kantin feels like a typical Minangkabau restaurant. It has that traditional look and you can taste the classic flavors. They also have a nice surprise on the menu: the satay, which tastes quite good. The restaurant is in a good place, so it's easy to find. Their service is fast, so you don't need to wait a long time for your food. The prices are okay, you get good value for what you pay. But, one thing that could be better is the cleanliness. They could improve this to make the dining experience more comfortable.
Nitha — Google review
A must visit to taste local culinary in local atmosphere. The restaurant is busy, noisy and quite hot, but that's part of the local ambience. The food offering is so many, that we need several visits to enjoy them all. Of course all of them are delicious. Try the Ayam Pop (a kind of fried chicken with special recipe) and Teh Talua (tea stirred with egg and sugar), as the signature delicacies.
Tomi S — Google review
Delicious food of Padang's traditional food. Spicy and rich of taste. Nice place and quietly clean.

As always, this place is one of my favourite restaurant especially in bukittinggi. Their food taste really good especially ayam pop. The taste of food never changed since I was young, exactly the same. Their hospitality is good, their service very quick, but my bad is always forgot to take some pictures in this place since I feel hungry...

Nestled in a charming sidestreet just north and west of Panorama Park, Pical Sikai is a delightful local warung that beckons food enthusiasts with its mouthwatering vegetarian offerings. This eatery specializes in pical, a traditional Indonesian dish featuring an array of boiled vegetables like fragrant banana flower and crispy cassava chips, all generously drizzled with rich peanut sauce.
The owner very friendly. I like kue lupis. She made me a cup of local black coffee. She sells lamang tapai a traditional food also lontong and some dessert. Will be back for sure.
FY — Google review
Visited Pical Sikai, a well-known small shop in Bukittinggi that specializes in Pical (the West Sumatera version of Indonesian Pecel). This was our first meal in Bukittinggi as part of our adventure in West Sumatra. This place has been around since my father was a child, and he used to come here often. It’s great to see it still going strong after all these years. Since we weren’t too hungry, we only tried Lamang Tapai, which had a great balance of sweetness and slight tanginess from the fermented black glutinous rice. We didn’t get to try their signature Pical, but we made sure to get some takeaway for our family. The place is small but popular, so it can get quite busy, especially in the morning. If you’re in Bukittinggi, it’s worth stopping by, especially for a taste of traditional Minang flavors!
Ryan A — Google review
delicious, the food they serve is very good, brings the city to feel the past, the seller is very friendly, good service, suitable to visit with family, the great taste makes us feel nostalgic when every bite enters our mouth, the place is very clean, and tidy, near the tourist attraction "panorama of the cyanok canyon and Japanese hole", don't forget to visit this place when you are in Bukittinggi, some traditional food is here, I really like eating here, the taste is hard to forget, this is really Extraordinary

Unique place for Pecal /pical lovers ( Indonesian traditional vegetables combination). Some people are not interested with this kind of food , but for food lovers this is a must place to visit when traveling to this area. You can park your car on the road and after that you must take a walk around 30 - 50 meters to reach the traditional building. Please come here only in the morning.

Nice decor with Bob Marley smiling at you.. Plus some traditional Indonesian pictures and trinkets.. This town is not exactly overflowing with bars so this was the one i could find and was really a good find.

It felt like a tourist trap, offering a taste of international food options. Sadly our pizza/calzone and wedges were full of sugar and tasted sweet... It's very overpriced for what you get! Nonetheless, the staff were very kind to us, which was nice.

If you find yourself wandering the vibrant streets of Bukittinggi, make sure to stop by Nasi Kapau Ni Lis, a delightful food stand nestled in the bustling marketplace. This gem specializes in traditional Padang cuisine, serving up steaming plates of rice paired with an array of delectable seafood and other local dishes that are beloved by both locals and visitors alike. Located near the iconic Jam Gadang monument at Pasar Ateuh, it’s a hotspot for those craving authentic Indonesian flavors.
The true original Nasi Kapau. Trully delicious and the flavor is very strong. Combined with cool climate, they are the perfect combination for you to gain weight. I am serious! I tried dendeng batokok, crispy baluik goreng and dendeng masiak. Even the simple sayur nangka taste best here. They taste so good I forgot that I was full already. 😤 The price is pretty affordable. And totally worth it, every rupiah. ❤

Great experience.. must visit any of these stall during any visit to Bukittinggi.. food taste good and price was really reasonable.. its mouthwatering just to see all those food in front of you while you eat.. it makes you want to try as many different food as your stomach can handle.. As for me i really love their chicken rendang and the bamboo sprout curry.. thats truly heaven.. ☺☺ Ask the people at the market the direction to this place since this stalls are located in the middle of a maze-like market so it might need a bit of effort to find it or simply by luck. They call the area Los Lambuang (literally translated as "stomach alley"), since this area is where most of the food seller located. So for any foodie, you may be able to spend a lot of time trying different kind of foods here and it is also fun to explore around and see what they have to offer.
Reyner G — Google review
Nasi Kapau Ni Lis Bukittinggi West Sumatra November 2019 Nasi kikil for 28 K IDR. The meal comes fully loaded with a bit of tambusu (intestines filled with whipped egg whites which becomes a spongy almost tofu-like matrix of flavour when cooked inside the intestines), some delicious curried veg (the cauliflower and jackfruit is really really good), and some fried cassava pieces cooked in rendang spices. The rendang spices were just amazing and the crispy cassava pieces adds a really nice crunchy texture to the meal. Meanwhile, the kikil is huge enough to warrant the price and is cooked really well that it still retains its structure although it is really tender. Subsequently, it has a very nice gulai taste without leaving that overly fatty/rich aftertaste on your palate. This really is a master class of what rendang spices, tambusu, veg gulai, and kikil could be. Furthermore, i had a bit of Mbak @melani_pedro 's dendeng kering (dry beef jerky) and that must have been the best beef jerky ever. Like seriously, eating it i felt as if i was eating some really crunchy smoked bacon. I will probably always prefer pork to beef, but this thing was really something i tells ya. The chili and the broths are good - great even, but they do not in any way distract you from the star of the show. The jerky is able to retain its shape but can be easily cut and crumbled and does not become spikey thorns in your mouth when bit (trust me, i had some of those unpleasant experiences). It is also so well fried that it imparts that aforementioned smokiness without tasting like its dried up burnt meat. This lady really knows what she's doing, she should get a Michelin star for this dendeng. So anyway, the rice package is 28 K and each additional meat/fish/whatevs is 20 K. It is a bit expensive, especially for the area. BUT i really have to say that it is so so soooo worth it. #greatfood #goodvalue #great #food #in #padang #bukittinggi #indonesia

Gulai Itiak Lado Mudo Ngarai is a popular dish in Bukittinggi, known for its spicy and oily flavor. When you order this dish, it comes with duck, beef curry, and cucumbers. The location of the stalls is close to tourist sites like Ngarai Sianok and Janjang Seribu.
We had Itiak Lado Mudo (green chilli duck) and gulai cancang (beef curry). Both are delicious. The duck meat was easily chewed, and the beef as well. Great taste and would recommend! The prices were reasonable for such taste. The servants were polite and quick response to any request. Parking space was plenty. We had black coffee and the taste was OK. We had live music performance as well...
Taufik W — Google review
Food here was good, but the service was too bad😕. The waiter was too rude to us, and not patience at all. I ordered green chili chicken curry rather than the duck, because i love chicken 🍗 But the “gulai cincang” menu was way better than anything here in my opinion, ate the croquette too it was ok 👌. The parking lot is a bit far from the restaurant, so you have to walk to the restaurant and the road is kinda uphill. So be careful with yourself and if you bring your family!!💝
Istri T — Google review
The duck was gorgeous. Had a very complex taste - salty, bitter and slightly sweet with some peppery notes. Very good emping crackers. Beef curry was also good.
Victor N — Google review
Delicious green chili duck.. Location is perfect.. Its at sianok canyon.. Have to go there and eat the duck.. A little but spicy, but the taste of green chili is superb...

Try their spicy green chilli duck specialty - or if you can't stand the heat, ask for telur barendo (crispy fried egg omelette). With a full stomach, enjoy the view of canyons, valleys, and a stream nearby

Green chili duck is a typical food that is quite famous in the Bukittinggi city. If you visit the city of Bukittinggi then you can try one of the stalls that are not far from the city center close to Japanese cave tourist sites, Ngarai Sianok and Janjang Seribu. When you order 1 portion of green chili ducks, you will be treated to ducks and also beef curry and cucumbers. The taste of the duck and curry is quite spicy and oily. Unfortunately the duck is a bit tough and a bit difficult to remove from the bone. Overall quite satisfying and worth a try.

Intrigued to try cos needed a break from high cholesterol Minang dishes. Famous for its cakwe, but honestly the texture is too bread-y, a bit more densed than how cakwe should be, luckily not oily at all! Tried the special beef steak, but the beef was disappointing, so hard to chew. Their sup garang asem was the best among what I ordered, very refreshing, tho the beef can be more tender.
Allan G — Google review
The food is good! Cozy place to get together with friends and family. But parking for car is bit hard
Ragil W — Google review
One of their specialties is Cakwe, I tried their original one and it tastes pretty good. It's not too dry or oily, soft and savory on the inside. The main dishes taste fine but the steak is quite chewy. I love to come back here again but only to taste theie Cakwe.

Pical Ayang is a popular culinary spot located in Bukit Tinggi, offering a variety of Indonesian dishes such as lontong sayur and bubur kampiun. The place is known for its delicious and fresh food, attracting both locals and visitors. Established in 1975 by Mrs. Ayang, the shop continues to serve typical local breakfast items and snacks, including rice cakes, porridge, egg coffee, and more.
We had lontong pical and lontong sayur tauco with teh talua. Both lontong pical and lontong sayur are superb with very authentic taste that you only find in West Sumatera. We also tried the fried side dishes all taste good. The teh talua is too sweet for us hence we cannot finish it. Overall, we realy like and will come back for sure.

Went to Pical Ayang, a well-known spot in Bukittinggi famous for its Pical. We visited in the morning, and even then, the place was already packed with cars and motorbikes—a clear sign of its popularity. If you're driving, you might need to park a bit further down the street. What surprised me was the variety of West Sumatran breakfast dishes. In Jakarta, West Sumatra is mostly known for its rich and savory Padang food, but here, there were plenty of sweet snacks and desserts like Lupis, Ketan, etc. The highlight for me was the Bubur Kampiun, a sweet porridge that truly lived up to its name—"Kampiun" means Champion, and it was indeed a champion of flavors! It’s a mix of steamed white and black sticky rice, banana compote, temple porridge, mung bean paste, and more. A complex, layered dish that was both filling and delicious. Of course, we also tried their Pical, which was flavorful and fresh, and their Sop Daging, a comforting beef soup that was just as enjoyable. Definitely recommended, but be prepared for crowds—this place is clearly a local favorite!

Affordable prices and filling! Easy disability access. toilets available. Can take away. Payment by cash or qris. Best!!

Longtong pical 👍 Very strong pical flavor(slightly bitter). Generous use of kencor and other herbs makes this a very authentic recipe. Longtong sayur 👍 Well balanced flavor. Ketupat is unique as it has soft kee chang texture. Sup daning 👍 Chunky pieces of beef. Not too much MSG unlike other stalls.

PICAL AYANG Come to this place on a friend's recommendation to try a variety of culinary delights provided. Even though the place is small, but buyers never stop. Food & beverages that are sold include rice cake, various kinds of porridge, typical Minang egg coffee, various local snacks, etc. Everything is delicious... This shop has been established since 1975 by Mrs. Ayang, who was still a girl at that time. Still in this business, currently Pical Ayang has been continued by her daughter. Good luck ✊🏽🤟🏽👍🏽

Hotel Hello Guest House is a down-to-earth guesthouse offering simple dorms and rooms with TVs, breakfast, and Wi-Fi. It is conveniently located within walking distance of all the city's attractions. The friendly staff ensures a very clean environment with pure white sheets, fresh towels, and washed blankets for every new guest. The hotel offers capsule rooms as well as motorbike rentals. Guests appreciate the nice variety of included breakfast options and the helpfulness of the staff.
The location is fantastic, and the rooms are the cleanest we had in Indonesia. Additionally, the scooter rental is the cheapest we found in Sumatra. However, the greatest value of this place is Ling and her staff. They are friendly and always ready to help with anything. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

The room was very small but at least very clean. Also the toilet ok. The main problem was that the hotel is next to a mosque which makes it impossible to sleep because pray starts at 4am and ends at 8am… We rent a motorbike for 90k/day and it was not the best motorbike on the market.. Breakfast ok

If I should represent the perfect hotel manager in my head it would be Mrs. Ling. She speaks a perfect English and she's friendly but, most importantly, she gives best advice for your trips in Bukitingi and around. She orients you with honesty and benevolence to let you take the better decisions without expecting anything in return. Because it's important too. I can say that the hotel is perfectly clean. The value for money is excellent and the breakfast is good and copious. You can go there with your eyes closed.

Very good guesthouse! I booked a standard room over WhatsApp. They also offer dorm pods. Highlights: WiFi, hot shower, breakfast included, help with tours and busses, sweet staff. Clean and well organised. Host Ling has an eye on everything. City centre in walking distance. I stayed 4 nights and hiked Sianok Canyon, visited the Rafflesia flower (wow!), tried Coffee Luwak and visited a school and a Minangkabau village with guide Armando. Thank you for a great time! PS: Yes, the mosque is close and loud. During the day you learn to ignore it, in the early morning I always woke up once but could sleep on since I have earplugs. But there are soo many mosques in B.tinggi, hard to avoid.

It's such a nice hostel, one of the best in Indonesia. The 4-person capsule is IDR 130k (online reservation is a little cheaper), breakfast included 🥞. It's clean, spacious, well equipped with hot shower, dining room, kitchen, etc. No A/C required in Bukittinggi since the weather is pretty cool.

Very good guest house with a lovely host called Ling. She speaks English very well. The place is very clean. You get good tips what to do and see, Ling can arrange for example guides and scooters, transport to your next place if you ask her and much more. Free water refill, tea and coffee available the whole day free as well. Good Indonesian breakfast. Central, easy to walk everywhere. I extended several times. Thank you again Ling and your whole team!

Murtabak restaurant
When exploring the culinary scene in Bukittinggi, one dish that stands out is Martabak Mesir Kubang H Man. This delightful savory flatbread is generously filled with spiced meat, eggs, and scallions, making it an ideal choice for sharing with friends or family. The vibrant street food atmosphere adds to the experience as you savor this local favorite alongside a side of flavorful kuah kicap infused with onions and chili.
It’s one of my family’s favorite menu. The location is strategic, closed to SPBU Bukittinggi, Bukittinggi Eye Center, Kharisma Hotel, Lapangan Kantin, etc. I bought on January 2025. Open hours: 17:30-01:00 WIB. The staff are humble and friendly.

Canyon Jungle Stay is a budget-friendly accommodation located near Hotel Orchid on Jalan Teuku Umar. The cafe offers tasty and affordable food, including local favorites like nasi goreng. The location is convenient, with nearby eateries and cafes. The stay provides good internet access and simple yet pleasant in-house dining options. Guests can enjoy the well-maintained garden and pick fresh passion fruit. The rooms feature a traditional design with basic amenities, including hot water in the bathrooms.
Intended to stay only for a few nights- ended up being there for more than 2 weeks - that alone says it all. Simple cosy bungalows, all with private bathrooms and hot water, some for families, in a beautiful garden, extraordinary friendly service of the entire crew- a truly outstanding experience of hospitality. I will surely miss this place and definetely want to come back. A big thank you to all the crew who made our stay a wonderful memory!

Beautiful and magical place! The huts are each unique in their design, which add to the charm of the place. Bathroom could do with some maintenance and we couldn't lock the hut, but this isn't the kind of place where you woukd have to fear for your stuff. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and especially attentive and entertaining with our 10 year old son. They do love their games here, so chess, domino, cards, badminton is constantly on the go. The food and drinks menu is very basic but serves the essential needs and breakfast is included in the stay. If you want to stay a little outside the town centre, this is a lovely place! Across the road are the rice paddies you can explore during a stroll.

Great 2 night stay at Canyon Jungle Stay. The rooms are great, comfortable, clean and spacious. The common area has eve you need: large tables, small kitchen with a few breakfast items and Indonesian basics available, large TV where you can cast some content, cute cats. The outdoors are full of fruit trees and a great badminton court with beautiful views. The staff will happily invite you to play badminton with them, making for a great bonding experience.

I've no regret staying here even though got issues with the water heater. But their staffs was very helpful and really kind. We Came here with 2 toddlers, and a baby. Surrounding was really clean. Got free room upgrade !

Canyon Jungle Stay is located fairly close to the canyon in Bukittingi. You can get there by foot in about 1 - 1.5 hour one way (it's a relatively easy walk until the end, where you need to get onto a hill with viewpoint). So if it comes to the homestay's location - it's very strategic and allows tourists to get to the points of interest fairly quickly. The rooms were comfortable, though the house we got had some issues with bathroom's state. There was some junk fit in a small gap in the wall but besides that the home we got was cozy to stay in. The staff was very nice and they've waited until our arrival at late night. We've also had nice breakfast here, I can recommend this homestay for other guests visiting Bukkttingi or willing to see some other local attractions - such as the nearby luwak coffee cafe and the Titan Plant.

Canyon Jungle Stay is the perfect spot to kick back and take in some amazing views of the jungle. The cozy rooms come with a chill balcony where you can just relax and enjoy nature. Plus, it’s super affordable, making it an awesome place to unwind and explore at the same time. ~ Love from Malaysia 🇲🇾

Had a great stay here for couple of days. It's in a great location. There's eating joints, cafes nearby for local type coffee and food. Internet is good. The food served in house is simple and nice. You can relax and also get some work done. Ridho was one of the best I've seen he took care of all my request without any issues. Request to management: Please add some very simple but useful facilities like a stand to keep soap etc in toilet, hooks for cloth, may be one standing fan. It'll make it perfect!
Ganesh R — Google review
Toilet is quite dirty and even a bit smelly. Bed not so clean. There's only 1 mirror and its in the bathroom, need to do makeup and skincare in the bathroom with less lighting. Table provided in the room also too small. And worst is the water flow is very bad, the water pressure of the shower is already slow but the bathroom already became a 'pool' while showering (the sink also got clogged). Breakfast only got 1 menu which is nasi goreng. Should at least provide bread/cereal/biscuits as other option. Scenery and ambient is nice but not worth it. Sorry 🙏

Restaurant
Ampiang Dadiah Pasar Ateh is a traditional Minangkabau dessert that features a combination of glutinous rice chips (ampiang) and buffalo yogurt known as dadiah. The ampiang is made from pounded and sun-dried young red or white glutinous rice, while the dadiah is produced through a fermentation process using fresh buffalo milk.
Ampiang dadiah is a special Minangkabau snack made from a combination of glutinous rice chips (ampiang) and 'yoghurt' made from fresh buffalo milk fermented in 15 cm long bamboo pieces covered with banana leaves. The Dadiah is produced after 2 nights of fermentation process. This dish consists of a mixture of ampiang, dadiah, liquid brown sugar sauce, coconut shavings, and ice shavings. The taste of ampiang dadiah in this place is really good, mantulll and legendary. The place is located among the market stalls in the old row of shophouses next to the new Pasar Ateh building.

It's really delicious to eat during the day! (Original) Cukup menantang nih menjelaskan rasanya ampiang dadiah yang ditemukan di muka Pasar Ateh ini. Food was tasty but too expensive and not a good value compared to others for what you get. I got alot more food yesterday from a similar restaurant for half the price. Service was exceptional and very friendly. Just spent 75,000 and I’m still hungry yesterday I spent 35 and I was almost full, so yeah, not too impressed. I won’t be back and I can’t recommend when there’s other places that are much better value maybe because it’s right in the central tourist zone. The prices are inflated or because I’m a foreigner they charge me more. I’m not sure there’s no way a local would’ve paid what I paid for what I got and been happy with it I feel like I got scammed a few pieces of small meat and a plate of rice and it was almost 5 dollars. Normally they should cost me one to two dollars so I definitely double paid for it and not too happy about it now I have to go and buy breakfast again just so I’m not hungry. I’ll end up spending over 100 K for breakfast which is absolutely ridiculous.

It was soft and easy to chew, the flavors tends to be on the sweeter side. + Surprisingly their fried rice is tasted really good. + The interior of the place reminds you of those old school restaurants wit tons of big and long tables. + The price is normal considering they are located in jam gadang area (~175k for 2 portion of rendang, 1 portion of dendeng batokok, 1 fried rice). + The staff are all friendly and even the owner will be more than happy to talk with you. - The parking space is pretty small.
