Yakushima Island

Island
Yakushima Island is a serene destination known for its subtropical climate and ancient cedar forests, making it a perfect spot for peaceful mountain hikes. The island's untouched wilderness has inspired many, including renowned composer Hisaishi Joe. Visitors are encouraged to rent a car to explore the World Natural Heritage site and experience the simple island life. With various shops offering mountain supplies, hikers can embark on unforgettable treks through the last wild hiking paradise in Japan.
One of those places that magic you away from the rest of the world. Incredible views of clouds over mountains, forests, cliffs and heaps of deer and monkeys. A car is a must! I recommend the travel company YES Yakushima. They make everything very easy and will organise your car, ferry and accommodation if you want it (free service). The car through them was $350aud ishh for 5 days. We spent 5 days, did the Jomon Sugi hike and part of the Shiratani Unsuikyo trail, do Jomon Sugi but don't underestimate it. Food around is great when the restaurants are open, very friendly and helpful locals. Also recommend the kayak tour!

I loved this beautiful place, real nature. Everything is expensive but it doesn't matter this place is amazing with beautiful mountains, fruit farm and waterfalls as well.
Avegail T — Google review
This island stole my heart and took my breath away. Hard to put into words how incredible the nature here is. Theres just gorgeous view after gorgeous view at every corner. All of the people we met on the island were the kindest human beings ever. I didn‘t want to leave and wish i couldve stayed here forever. I hope the island never changes and the people on it will keep protecting and nurturing the nature and animals here.
L S — Google review
I highly recommend visiting this island. One of the best destinations to hike and roam around, the secluded nature setting is just very heart warming. The waterfalls are amazing, the people are really kind. This island is famous for the UNESCO, world heritage, and has the oldest cedar tree in Japan! Better to rent a car and drive around, it rains very often so please have all the gear needed for very heavy rain, just to be safe! Don’t forget to try the flying fish!
Jane — Google review
A real nature wonderland, to be explored by CAR ! do not plan a trip there if you can't drive, buses are so sparse it's extremely hard to plan anything, no way to complete a trail in the given time between rides. IF you have a lot of money, a local phone, and can speak japanese, you might be able to get taxis. Don't expect help from the locals, who couldn't care less about tourism, barely anyone can speak a word of english, including in the tourist centers. Some restaurants or hotels might have lovely people that can help you out, otherwise don't even expect an eye contact with the locals. there's no hub or activities where you could meet other tourists to organise something in group, come alone only if you are very comfortable with solitude. plan very well ahead, if you want a guide it must be booked weeks in advance, you can't arrive there and improvise.
Julien R — Google review
It’s been over a year since we visited the island, and we still look back on our time there with wonderful memories. We often find ourselves wondering when we’ll have the chance to return.
Tobias E — Google review
Mountains, forests, beaches, rivers - what else could you ask for? The perfect escape from city life, do spend at least 3 days on this beautiful island.
Viraf P — Google review
This Island is very-well know for UNESCO world heritage and Moss forest, everywhere it is green and thick, good place to escape from all your stress, not crowded countryside with limited buses where you could have new experience, it is worth a visit just try once

Yakusugi Land in Yakushima is a haven for nature lovers and hikers. The trails wind through dense forests, alongside mossy streams, and feature wooden walkways and bridges. This area is perfect for beginners with a 30-minute course showcasing the unique Yakusugi cedars. One of the highlights is the gigantic Wilson's stump, resembling a heart when viewed from inside.
Great place with trails for all levels. Was great for me as I ruptured my ACL skiing a month ago, so had to stay away from the steeper unpaved trails but still had a lovely experience. Carpark wasn’t large although it wasn’t crowded so managed to park. Had a resthouse at the entrance with gift shop and decent toilets ¥100 donation
M S — Google review
Yakusugi Land is a natural forest park located, featuring ancient Yakusugi cedar trees, many over 1,000 years old. What I liked was the range of hiking trails—from easy 30-minute walks to longer 3-hour treks. The trails are well-maintained and wind through lush, mossy forests filled with old-growth cedars, fallen logs, and diverse plant life. Two buses travel to the park entrance, starting at Gochomae stop 62.
Vincent O — Google review
My family enjoyed hiking the trails at Yakusugi Land. Although my daughters are quite young (5 and 7 years old), the trails were clearly marked and not too difficult for them. During the hike, we saw many beautiful gorges and ancient cedar trees, some of which are over 1,000 years old. I would recommend going early in the morning, as the tree cover provides natural shade, keeping you cool while you hike.
Mark R — Google review
There were no spiders this high up so even if you are nervous about walking through the bush with spiders - this is a good place to go. The 50 minute walk was more like 30 minutes and was very cool - if I was doing it again I would do the longer 80 minute trail.
Sarah A — Google review
Good way to see the depth of the natural first including some millenarian cedars without heavy hiking. It's good if you have younger kids or can't hike for multiple hours in the forest
Colin M — Google review
A magical place and everything is well marked. I did the 210 min trail solo and it wasn’t overly strenuous. Some parts are a little bit technical or tricky, but not too bad. If you’re short on time, the 150 min trail seems just as good as the 210 min one. Saw maybe 10 other hikers, and I went on a Saturday.
Mitsuko N — Google review
Amazing old growth forest, but with evidence of the felling of some large cypress trees during the Meiji era. Giant trees, moss, busy rivulets and a gushing river beneath make this a sacred and awe-inspiring walk. Well-maintained walkway and clear signs and maps make it easy to walk however you want. It will bring the Shinto or Druid out in you.
Mark A — Google review
Achingly beautiful forest and river. Well marked trail, lots of signage. They have several hiking loops of different lengths and difficulties.

Wilson's Stump is a popular tourist destination located in Yakushima, Japan. This location boasts a stunning moss-covered sugi tree stump with an opening shaped like a heart, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy the trails nearby and take in the serene sounds of spring water flowing within the broken cedar. The stump also houses a small shrine inside for visitors to explore. Additionally, this area offers opportunities to encounter local wildlife such as Yakushima monkeys while hiking.
Very cool, enormous stump of what must of been a massive tree. The only problem is there is a set number of busses to the trail so all the tourists hiking arrive at about the same time. So prepare to walk as fast as possible to blow past everyone else if you want to arrive to take pictures without anyone else around.
Matt K — Google review
I love this place than the Jomon-sugi, will feel much relaxed inside the broken cedar, you could hear the flow of spring water inside and there is a little shrine inside the tree and Seriously I was trying to take the heart shaped photo through the tree but eventually I got failed, give a try in take the Photo as heart shaped ❤️ Thanks

Jōmon Sugi

Mentioned on

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Nestled in the lush landscapes of Yakushima, Jōmon Sugi stands as a majestic testament to nature's endurance, believed to be Japan's oldest tree. This ancient cypress, with its impressive trunk measuring over 16 meters in circumference, draws countless pilgrims eager to connect with its storied past. The journey to this natural wonder often begins on the Okabu Trail, where hikers navigate through enchanting moss forests that inspired renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s 'Princess Mononoke.'
It took me 6.5 hours to hike it. It’s not that difficult but not too easy either. If you go I recommend taking a taxi service with a group of people instead of taking the bus . The taxi costed 6k yen from anbo. We took the bus orginally at 4:40 am and then you need to take another bus at the museum which often had a long queue.
Kelly M — Google review
The hike there is great, but this magnificent, ancient tree is some thing you look at an say " wow, ...ok". It is impressive but a huge old tree has limited appeal. "The journey there, is more important than the destination"
Vincent O — Google review
Jomon sugi is just a big tree, you cannot even touch it. There are viewing decks 50meters away from the tree. What made the 10hour trek worth it is the breathtaking sceneries along the trek. Every rest, I can’t stop saying it’s so beautiful here.. Straight out of the fairytale book. Pictures don’t do justice. The view is so inspiring. I understand why Hayao Miyazaki got inspired by the forest and used it in his works. The trek is easy. There are stairs and paths that are easy to follow. 100m pass the Jomon sugi is a small house/ a camping house where people can stay overnight. It’s free. No staff. There is a tent toilet near it. The las bus from the trail entrance is 5:45pm so it’s advisable to get there early.
Red — Google review
For the forest bathers and tree enthusiasts, Jomon Sugi is like having ambrosia injected straight into the veins. You will experience the sublime. The hike itself is quite easy as 70% is on a set track. If you're a more experienced hiker, you will find this more annoying than enjoyable as it is difficult to pass people in groups. Once you get to the back 30% it becomes more invigorating, although partially all tracked, mostly wooden steps. That said, it is gorgeous landscape and forest, so you being able to turn off your brain to watch around you without considering your foot placement is a decent exchange for the loss of intensity. Time needed: I drew 6 sketches on the way up, it took about 5 hours and my hike back was 2 hours 20 minutes. Transport: For in season, bus schedules are not the same as online currently. You have to take the bus before 5:40 (5:40 being the last bus now) If you miss the bus you can sometimes order a taxi (which I ended up taking for ¥6,000.) Expensive, BUT I did have a delayed start and had the trail to myself for about 60% of it until I caught up to the other groups. Truly magical. Water: You can refill along the way, Yakushima water is safe to drink from the mountain. Bathrooms: there are some operating bathrooms at the very start and the transition point from rail track to stairs area. There is also portable toilet you need to have a bathroom bag with to use. Bring food! All over Yakushima you can buy a bento to take with you. I regret only having baked goods, fruit, and snack bars. There are a lot of stops to be able to eat and it would have been dreamy to have eaten a whole, rejuvenating meal versus snacks along the way.
August H — Google review
A hike that many may consider to be the most popular on the island. Definitely can be done within 6-8 hours, and without a tour guide. Highly advise starting around 5-6:00 in the morning just to be safe. Tickets for the bus ride to the starting point can be bought at the bottom parking lot. Most of the hike is straightforward, while the last mile and a bit gets a bit steeper and tougher. Bring some snacks and beverages for hydration as there are rest stops a long the way and places to go sit down and eat at the top (please remember to take your trash home!!). Beautiful and breath-taking, rain or shine, an absolute must experience for all.
Matt K — Google review
A challenging hike, depending on your starting point. But it feels like an incredible to make it there. It's a beautiful hike. More amazing than my pictures could capture.
Tony B — Google review
Beautiful 8-10hr trail to and from Jomon Sugi. Whilst impressive, the tree shouldnt be the main attraction. Make sure you enjoy the walk and soak in the surreal forest energy. Almost mystical.
Zhihan Y — Google review
Incredibly beautiful trail! Wake up early to take first bus, the departure is from Yakusugi Museum. Buy your ticket in advance in Anbo.

Inakahama Beach is a picturesque location, renowned as a breeding ground for turtles from May to July. Its stunning white sand and serene atmosphere make it an ideal destination for relaxation and morning walks along the shore, with the added bonus of spectacular views of volcanic Mt. Furudake. Despite its fame, the beach remains relatively uncrowded, allowing visitors to bask in its tranquil ambiance.
It's a beach when sea turtles come to spawn at certain times of the year. Came in early April on an evening to watch the sunset, literally had the whole beach to myself. It's got great views and a fair bit of parking space. No food or drinks nearby though, so do bring those if you're planning to stay for long.
Jacques L — Google review
Really neat to see the beach where apparently 40% of all North Pacific Loggerhead turtles are born. Gorgeous steep beach banks with picturesque rocks in the water, so make sure to walk out and down rather than just peek from the parking area. 24 turtles laid eggs last night in a fenced off area and you can see their trails along the steep sand slopes (look like skinny sled paths flanked by flipper "prints". Outside the bathroom are two faucets for rinsing off sand form your feet.
Kaoru L — Google review
Nice little beach. Came at 5:15pm was almost empty. Not many parking spaces
M S — Google review
Very serene beach. Good to relax and walk along the beach in the morning. Not very busy as well. There are a few cafes nearby too, if needed. We were just 2 people, walking alone in the beach, sitting on the rocks, and relaxing on the sand. There were few people fishing a bit away. Bus stop is tight in front of the beach, so easily accessible, even though the bus frequency is very low. Also, it is just a 15 min walk from Nagata village. Overall, highly recommended of you want to relax peacefully on a pristine and calm beach.
Kanishka P — Google review
Sea turtles lay their eggs on this beach. The water was so blue and clean.
Max K — Google review
Possibly the main sand beach in Yakushima, beautiful and usually quiet, also used by turtles for nesting.
Mike A — Google review
Came a little late around 16:50 (end-Nov period) and the sun has set somewhat behind the mountains. Suggest to come by earlier since the sunset view is observed from lower ground (as compared to the nearby observatory deck on higher ground). There's also a toilet and a washing area where you could wash off the sand from your feet.
Si W — Google review
Nice beach! We were in mid-April. At was almost clean, though we saw plastic here and there, unfortunately it is a huge problem everywhere in the world. The beach was full of small hermit crabs.

Ohko Waterfall is a picturesque and enchanting natural wonder located in Yakushima. Standing at an impressive height of 88 meters, the waterfall tumbles down into a stunning natural pool surrounded by lush forest. Access to this breathtaking sight is easy, with only a short 2-minute walk from the car park. Visitors can get very close to the falls and even jump across rocks to experience it up close. The waterfall splits into three large falls, making it the biggest one around.
I took the bus there. You need to make sure that you get on the correct bus because they go to different locations. It will be the last stop on the bus and after you have 40 min until the next bus arrives . Waterfall is top 100 in Japan. And it’s definitely impressive

Beautiful waterfall. It’s a quick visit, but worth it!

Nature & Parks
Shiratani Unsui Gorge offers peaceful and serene hiking trails surrounded by dense forests, streams, and valleys that boast a rich variety of flora and fauna. The moss-covered forest creates a magical atmosphere that is best explored on bright days. An exciting trek to the Drum Rock promises breathtaking views worth experiencing. Visitors should be prepared for challenging uphill terrain through the jungle with occasional muddy puddles along the way.
Stunning hiking trail and National Park. As at January 2025, still only a single route available to walk due to trail damage. The 3 hour time frame was accurate for our group at a medium pace and stopping to take photos regularly. The track is lovingly maintained, but is gravel/rocks/river crossings so proper shoes are necessity. Borrow a walking stick at the entry. Even on a day with no rain forecast, it rained and hailed 3 times - wet weather gear essential. For those with limited mobility, the first section of the current route (approx 30mins walking) is a combination of paved path and wooden steps leading to two bridges crossing beautiful waterfalls and cascades. This section alone is worth the trip. Access with a car was very easy.
M H — Google review
Did the Taikowa Rock round trip course today. Early part of the trail requires a small detour as the route shared by the two cedar courses is currently closed due to maintenance. What an amazing experience! The trail combines a good challenge with amazing nature and great sights. Definitely a must-do if you’re on these parts. The ground can be slippery due to both wet rocks and tangling roots, in particular after rain. So bring proper equipment. The final stretch to Taikowa rock is a steep climb - but worth it if you’re up to the challenge. Note that the view over the mountains may be limited in foggy weather (see pictures). Still, I’d say it is worth it.

Shiratani Unsui Gorge is a breathtaking paradise that has been on my bucket list since 1997, when I first learned that this ancient forest inspired the enchanted woods in Miyazaki’s "Princess Mononoke." Finally visiting this magical place exceeded all my expectations and left me in awe of its natural beauty. As soon as you enter the gorge, you are enveloped by a serene atmosphere that feels like stepping into another world. The towering trees, some of which are thousands of years old, create a majestic canopy that filters the sunlight, casting a soft, dappled glow on the forest floor. The air is fresh and invigorating, infused with the earthy scent of moss and rich vegetation. The forest is renowned for its vibrant moss, which blankets the rocks and tree trunks in a lush green carpet. This enchanting sight adds a mystical quality to the surroundings, making you feel as if you are wandering through a fairy tale. It’s truly a photographer’s dream, with countless opportunities to capture the beauty of nature at its finest. One of the highlights of Shiratani Unsui Gorge is the crystal-clear water flowing through the rivers and streams. The water is so pure that you can drink it straight from the river, a testament to the pristine environment that this area boasts. Sipping on the cool, refreshing water while taking in the breathtaking views was a moment I will cherish forever. The trails are well-maintained and offer varying levels of difficulty, making it accessible for everyone from casual walkers to seasoned hikers. No matter how far you venture, the tranquility of the forest and the soothing sounds of nature create a deeply calming experience. Overall, Shiratani Unsui Gorge is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature. It’s a magical place that truly captures the essence of what makes Yakushima so special. I can't recommend it highly enough! Whether you’re a fan of Miyazaki’s films or simply looking for a breathtaking escape into nature, this ancient forest will leave you enchanted and longing to return.
King K — Google review
This place was so beautiful and serene. The hike to the moss covered forest was challenging but rewarding with the beautiful scenery. Good hiking shoes is a must as it could be muddy and good grip is needed for climbing up and down the rocks in some sections. Highly recommend bringing snacks or a packaged meal to eat at a rest break for fuel. The hike to the moss forest and back took us around 4 hours! There are bathrooms before you begin your hike and I highly recommend bringing water!
Melinda L — Google review
An incredible experience. This tranquil place is inspirational to walk through and leaves a lasting impression on your mind. This is the place that inspired the film 'Princess Mononoke'. There's so much to see. I saw monkeys on the way in, and the entrance has a beautiful waterfall that's worth the drive for that alone. There's lots of mossy rocks and trees, several Japanese trees whose age dates back to around the years of the Roman Republic, and lots of waterfalls and streams. Some of the paths have steep climbs, and it was physically challenging in parts, though I had no hiking gear bar the boots. Hiking poles would've made the return journey more enjoyable. Recommended times on the map are conservative. I did the longest walk which recommends 4 hrs, though even with many photo breaks and some rest it was still only about 3 hrs or less. Time the course you want to do depending on your fitness level, and climbing confidence. If you want to give yourself time and do multiple trails, go first thing in the morning and pack water and snacks. Though one water bottle is enough as the water from the streams are delicious.
Nathan F — Google review
This is the place—yep, the magical mossy forest from Princess Mononoke! Shiratani Unsui Gorge is absolutely majestic. Whether it's sunny or raining, the whole place looks like a dream, with huge ancient cedars and soft green moss everywhere. It feels fresh, peaceful, and just super cool. You don’t even need to hike all the way to the super famous sugi (which honestly looks a bit soggy haha). Just plan around 5 to 6 hours, focus on the Moss Forest trail, and take your time. It’s not hard, and there are plenty of lovely spots to rest or snap photos. One of the most enjoyable hikes ever!
Jordy S — Google review
Part of the driveway towards the valley was very narrow, which might be difficult for some drivers to pass with confidence. Free carpark was available beyond the ticketing office. There were toilets here. A small fee was required to enter the area. The staff introduced a few routes with different levels of difficulty and time required. A one hour walk was minimal. The forest was misty during my visit, like a fairy tale. After several visits to this kind of sightseeing point, it was not so unique without trees aged more than three thousand years old. But it was worth going on the island.
Joseph C — Google review
We chose the green route to walk into the mossy 🌳 forest, blessing us with a fine day in the morning hike. Surroundings are stunning giant cedars and mossy plants on the trees and stones. The formed wooden stairs and the stone steps are well maintained, not a difficult climb all the way. We haven’t climb up to the Taiko Rock due to the knee pain. Indeed, it is a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of nature.

The Kigensugi Cedar is a celebrated and venerable tree that is estimated to be around 3,000 years old. It can be easily spotted from the forest boardwalk or along the winding road leading down from Yakusugiland. This majestic cedar tree is considered an imposing sight due to its size, and visitors are urged to take time out of their schedules to visit this fantastic tourist attraction in Japan.
Great to see if you couldn't get to the Jomon Sugi tree. 🚌 Getting there: If you're taking the bus, I would recommend going directly before or after Yakusugi Land. The bus will stop at this stop for 18-ish minutes. You can get off the bus, walk down the steps, see this tree, and walk back to the bus and get on before it does its U-turn to go back to Yakusugi Land and finally Anbo. You don't need to spend more than the 18 minutes here, and walking to/from Yakusugi Land is kind of a waste because the point is to walk INside Yakusugi Land.

It's a large tree close to the road. Takes around 15 or so minutes to reach down a windy road from Yakusugiland

Nestled on the picturesque Yakushima Island, Il Mare is a delightful culinary gem that specializes in Italian cuisine with a unique twist. This charming restaurant offers an array of seafood dishes sourced from the surrounding waters, alongside mouthwatering pasta and pizza crafted with local venison. The menu showcases casual Italian fare made from fresh, local ingredients that are simply irresistible.
Stayed 2 nights at yakushima, had dinner here the first night and decided we had to come back for one of the loveliest, fluffiest and lightest pizza doughs I've ever had. It also has a lovely amount of chewiness Stars of the show are the Cameron special pizza (local venison with gorgonzola) and... The coffee! Chef says the coffee beans are imported from Naples Italy. The coffee was fragrant and very smooth. Also liked the ravioli with local kurobuta, and the nonna cake also with gelato from Italy. Chef is fluent in English. I would come back to dine here in a heartbeat!

Best Italian food we had on our Japan trip this time! Pasta was al dente, sauce from bolognese with local deer meat was to die for, squid ink pasta with really fresh vegetables and local flying fish! Dolce was amazing too with lemon pound cake and Italian gelato! Perfect meal and the owner/chef was so friendly and speak greats English. 100/10 recommend for anyone craving authentic Italian food with a Japanese twist!

Eating here was an amazing experience. The chef uses local, fresh ingredients that are very high quality. You can taste the love and effort he has put into learning how to create the perfect pizza/italian food. My partner had the bolognese and raved about how tasty it was as well. The chef speaks perfect english and we regret going here on our last day in Yakushima as we wish we could return for more. Highly recommend!!!!

Absolutely delicious pizza/pasta/dessert - and what a beautiful view! The pizza was better than the vast majority of pizza I've had in London, the marinara was beautifully cooked. We loved the chef, and really appreciated him replying to our reservation email, which was written very poorly via Google Translate!

We went for lunch on a weekend over Golden Week so we knew there was going to be a line. We arrived around noon and got seated around 1pm. Various kinds of pizza, a few pasta dishes, desserts and other side dishes to choose from. We tried the venison pizza, which was pretty good! The ravioli was not what we were expecting, it was okay, nothing spectacular. The pizza in general had a bit too much crust in my opinion, which fills you up pretty quickly. That being said, probably one of the best food options in Yakushima.

Wow! Was blown away by the food at Il Mare. We were craving Italian food and we’re very happy to spot this place after a long morning hike. We had the Margherita and the deer meat pizza (which I tried because so many people recommended it) and it was amazing. I expected the flavour to be quite strong but the chef balanced it so beautifully with truffle and the pizza base was also delicious it has been one of the best pizzas I have eaten to date. The staff were also very welcoming and accommodating providing an English menu and the chef even came out and we made sure to tell him the food was delicious. Thanks for having us!

Amazing little pizza place and an unexpected find! The pasta also looked quite good here based on what we saw others ordering, though we didn’t try it ourselves. Great place to also try the local venison, which was delicious. We found the owner to be very nice and able to speak English very well. It did take a bit of time, so be sure you can spare about an hour or so for your meal.

Great neopolitan-style pizzas with local flavor twists. We had the pumpkin sauce pizza with local fish and onion and it was absolutely scrumptious. Owner was very considerate and says he's mostly self taught! Unexpected find and turned out to be a great first meal in Yakushima for us. Also if you love propeller planes, you'll have a first class seat to watching the lift-off and landings of classic planes as the restaurant is located right by the airport with a view of the landing strip. the soft buzzing is a bonus. Extra tip: Order the local Yakushima beer, it's seriously delicious - and we usually don't feel that way about beer. 💛🍕🛫💛

(Translated by Google) Since it's from Yakushima, I was expecting ramen to be served at a ski resort, etc., so they serve really nice ramen! Although there was a gap, it was very delicious. The soup of the tankan ramen was so light that I ended up drinking it all. It's so delicious that it's an option to eat while traveling. If it's one meal out of five lunches and dinners for two nights and three days, it's possible, but if your accommodation includes dinner, you may not have the time to eat it. I didn't ask where the shop owner was from, but his neighbors were also regular visitors. The pork bowl is just a pork bowl, so I don't really feel the rarity of it. Ajitoku is a renowned restaurant in Yakushima, offering regional and seasonal dishes. The menu features local seafood like flying fish and unagi (eel) set menu, as well as tonkatsu. The host provides excellent service and the food is highly recommended. Despite minimal English spoken, basic Japanese suffices for communication and reservations. It's important to note that alcohol consumption is discouraged if driving, but there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverage options available.
Very good restaurant. There is an English menu. Four parking spots in front.

The waitress was very accommodating and she helped us out with an English menu. The flying fish was delicious and some of the better unagi I've had on my trip so far!

This is an absolutely sensational restaurant. My son and I just ate like royalty for USD$11 each. The sashimi was succulent, my son’s meat delicious. The “teishoku” had a really nice variety of items - and everything was cooked perfectly. We are only here 4 nights, I do not see how we can avoid going back again?
David G — Google review
I had the fried flying fish set, which comes with fried flying fishcake, cold soba, and miso soup. The meat of the flying fish was flavorful with not much fishiness. The owner explained that you could also eat the head and fins of the fish. The fins tasted like chips, but the head was a bit too fishy for me. She also suggested eating the fried fishcake while it's hot before it gets cold and hard.

Sushi restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Iso no Kaori is a well-known sushi and sashimi restaurant situated on the main road north of Anbo. The establishment offers an authentic atmosphere, with tatami mats for seating. While prices may be higher compared to other sushi spots, the freshness of the fish justifies it, as some are caught by the staff themselves and served as catch of the day. Due to its popularity, making a reservation in advance is advisable.
Sashimi was very fresh and portion was generous for the price. The staff also explains the types of fish on the sashimi platter with picture cards. Recommend to also try the fried sweet potato (which was super tasty) as well as the tankan juice. Suggest to make a reservation (I did via Facebook messenger) as the place is popular.

Nice little gem in Ambo! We managed to get a table at 6pm without issues. Highlights were the karage and sweet potato, highly recommend both. We also had sashimi set, bamboo shoot tempura, edamame and tofu (which was less fried and more raw sprinkled with salt). Very friendly staff who were accommodating with simple English and even showed pictures of the fish in the sashimi set
Melina — Google review
The sushi here was great. Especially the squid was so tender, I've never tasted such a delicious one before. We got a place on the tatami mats, so the atmosphere was nice and authentic. The prices are higher than in other sushi restaurants, but its totally understandable. It's so fresh, some of the fish is even catched by the staff themselves and prepared as catch of the day. You should make a reservation before, as it is most of the time completely booked.

We just arrived at Yakushima, so qe wanted to eat at a place nearby our hostel. We all had the sushi platter combined with some side dishes like the fried flying fish. We had a great time here, the fish was good and fresh and the waitress was upbeat which contributed to the overall experience. After dinner the staff helped me to find a shoe rental place for my hiking trip. Would recommend coming here!

The best seafood restaurant at the Anbo Harbor of Yakushima. Highly recommended to stop by if you are near the area. They serve Yakushima local Shochu as well. Better call in advance to get a reservation as it is usually busy during dinner time and won’t have a table til 8 pm if you reserve on the day.

Creative cuisine restaurant
Panorama is a restaurant located in the center of Miyanoura, offering a diverse menu with staff favorites and a wonderful drink selection including sake, local draft beer, passion wine, tankan juice drinks, and tankan liquor. The atmosphere is described as chic and the bilingual menu makes it accessible for English speakers. The food is praised for its deliciousness but noted to be on the pricier side. Some highlights include the pork belly dish and unique sashimi selections.
So... I don't usually write reviews but this one was special, the food was great the staff and the chef (which is also the owner) we're very nice and social. I really do feel like I can keep praising this little place for eternity because literally everything was spot on and perfect. We (my mom and myself) picked out of the menu the following: Drinks - Tankan beer - 10/10 Cedar beer - 10/10 Dark beer - 9.5/10 Appetizer - Soft custard egg - 9/10 Main - Deer meat dumplings (best dumplings ever) - 10/10 Pork belly rice ball with egg yolk - 10/10 Minced Flying fish katsu with japanese mayo - 10/10 Glazed pork belly with tofu (which tast like heaven) - 10/10 Pork ribs - 10/10 simple and delicious (done to perfection) Desert - So on the desert side of thing we kind of started bumbed out because we wanted to take the cream Brule flavored black tea and tankan (local tangerine) and they just ran out of it or didn't make it for this service (we we're the two of us plus 3 people in the rest). Instead we took the vanilla ice cream and sweet potato and we weren't let down i can tell you that, it was amazing 10/10!!!!!! P.S. Important note! I am not paid i paid the full price for my meal I visited there with my mom on a vacation and it was absolutely perfect, thanks for the hospitality, thanks for the food!!!.

Food: 3 star, some dishes 4 star. The price to quality and quantity ratio is way off. With the exception of the pork belly, which was delectable, the other food we had was average in taste and nothing special - it was just fresh food. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Ambiance and service: 5 star. The restaurant was nice and the staff and chef were very friendly and warm. The reason for 2 stars is the cost. Our final bill came to a weirdly large sum of 8,210 yen. We were so exhausted from the day that we just paid, but we couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. After reviewing photos of the menu, we realized our total should have been 6,800 yen. Mistakes happen, but we got a completely different bill! The restaurant is small, so this should not have happened. Overall, we were much happier eating at another local restaurant the following day. We had more to eat and drink and it only cost us 2,500 yen. And we found the food tastier. 😅

Beef carpaccio, potato crispy pizza and sashimi plate are must try! Sashimi with delicate knife cut enhance the texture and taste. We’ve been there 2 times in our 6 days stay coz we love the food and the atmosphere while comparing to some other restaurants around. Besides, the toilet is fabulous clean and stylish😄 We found free parking near the riverside and it’s 2 mins walk to the restaurant. Easily make reservation through their instagram.

I had dinner at Panaorama three times during my five-night stay in Miyanoura. The good bits: braised pork belly (トロトロ豚なんこつ煮) is the menu highlight (I prefer the donburi rice version, which comes with a half cooked egg), the wide selection of local alcohol (beer, shochu, umeshu plum wine), the fact that it’s one of the few restaurants on the island that opens late and accepts credit cards. The bad bits: the cold chawanmushi with seaweed, the simpler menu items are not interesting (sliced avocado was bruised, fried potatoes with ketchup). Price is on the high side. On the last night we requested indoor seats as it was cold outside; it was late and there were many empty spots inside, but they refused, saying all the spots were already reserved; we stayed until closing time and all those inside seats remained empty for the whole night. That really annoyed me.

During our time in Yakushima we went here twice out of our three nights! We tried different things on the menu both nights and everything was lovely and delicious!! The staff is so kind and the environment is very cozy and welcoming. Please please please make a reservation if you are interested in eating here as we saw many people get turned away at the door due to being full for the night! Our most favorites were the tobikatsu and Camembert cheese with tankan orange! Thank you for your kindness and hospitality from Florida!!!!

i recommend the honey umeshu and the pork belly bowl. the spare ribs were good but the dish was very very small - more like the trim of the ribs than the actual ribs. not a main course size at all. even the creme brulee, though it was labeled "large" on the menu, was in no way large. despite that, the food was still good and not too expensive, and the music they were playing in the background was nice.

Tempura restaurant
Shiosai is a spacious restaurant with multiple dining areas that offers delicious food and great service without requiring reservations. The menu includes English translations, and customers can choose from a variety of dishes such as flying fish kaarage, Wagyu beef fillet, pork kurbota croquettes, sashimi, salt grilled Yakushima flying prawns, and more. The portions are generous and reasonably priced.
Saw some great reviews and decided to head to this restaurant for dinner during our trip in Yakushima. The food portion here is big and it serves many local seafood and produce. We made it a point to try out flying fish and also this very unique crustraciean which I thought is a shell fish called kame no te (translated as turtle leg) because it is how it look like. When we spoke to the waitress, she explained that it is more like shrimp than shell fish and when we tasted it, it actually tasted more like baby squid to us. It seem like the correct way of eating is to suck out the meat but I use chopsticks to dig it out instead given I wasn’t sure how it was eaten until the owner of another restaurant told me. It was quite an experience from the look of it but it taste really good with wasabi and soya sauce as they are boiled. They served flying fish that is grilled or fried and we opted for fried which served with spicy oroshi (grated radish) and ponzu (citrus soya sauce), the whole fish can be eaten from head to tail to the fins too. Highly recommend the fried ones. The giant shrimp seem to be a popular dish as well as we see many people ordered and boy that was a right choice, it was so juicy and meaty! We enjoyed our meal so thoroughly. Each set comes with huge portion of rice, chawamushi (steamed egg custard), side dish, miso soup and you can top up sashimi which we did and cost around JPY2000, so worth it. We spotted mostly locals but there were also a few foreigners, highly recommend this place. Parking is just right at the back of the shop but they only have 2 lots so you might need to find elsewhere if you can’t find one.

Tasty food with great service, no reservation required! They have an English menu and we went a la carte and we tried the following dishes: - flying fish kaarage came hot and fresh - Wagyu Beef fillet super tender and tasty, just melts in your mouth - pork kurbota croquettes came out super hot and super flavourful with the ponzu sauce! - sashimi was good and good variety - salt grilled Yakushima flying prawns super tasty - salted and fermented tuna entrails tastes weird not a must try.

Relatively large restaurant with a few dining areas. We ordered two sashimi set meals, one with flying fish karaage and another with tempura. Warung Karang is a stylish cafe restaurant offering a lunch plate with drink set and a dinner set of six dishes. The lunch plate allows you to choose from 5 different side dishes, some of which are surprisingly spicy but delicious. The restaurant has an amazing percentage of female customers and offers seats at the back where you can see the sea near the mouth of the river.
Come straight here if you're craving VEGETABLES and variety after endless set meals of rice and grilled/fried meat. Pick 5 dishes from a rotating selection of 10 sides (like nasi padang in Indonesian warungs - hence the name. This is not an Indonesian restaurant.) I was overjoyed to have a delightful selection of delicious and healthy sides from a variety of cuisines: prawn and spinach sauteed with butter & lemongrass, Moroccan flavoured calamari salad, Japanese simmered veg and fishballs, tuna and lotus root, and a light calamari and veg salad. Please note nearly all dishes have seafood/meat even if in small quantities. Don't be fooled by the shabby exterior/signage; the interior is clean and modern, decked with wooden furniture and greenery, streaming gentle music for a perfectly relaxed vibe. The view over the river is unbeatable, and the staff are incredibly friendly and do their best even if they can't speak much English. They do a discount for locals so you know it's not just a tourist joint. 1,400¥ for the set meal is very worth it as it's one of the few places at this price point offering such healthy food. Highly recommend!!

I am not Italian but as a European I visited Italy a couple times. The pasta you get here is absolutely great. It is perfectly cooked and the sauces give the pasta its japanese twist. We had a great dinner here. The pasta was some of the best I've had in Japan. The menu was pretty simple. It had about 10 selections of pasta dishes, 2 desserts, drinks, and a couple of sides. The inside is all wooden and very chic. The pasta comes with a salad and a drink, so I had a glass of wine. For the main dish I ordered the crab cream pasta and it was so delicious! Also had some garlic toast and that was delicious too. For dessert I split the chocolate cake. It came with a scoop of ice cream and was a little small. Should have got it for myself instead, but that was also amazing. All in all a great restaurant and I wish I had it near me

Fantastic hidden gem of a Soba noodle house. It closes early so get there for early lunch! A little hard to find as it's behind another house up a road, but trust the pics and the pin on Google maps. Very lovely traditional Japanese soba restaurant with very good prices (compared to US). No English so Google translate will be helpful. Very nice and polite owners. I visited Yakushima in off-season (mid-December) so the place was empty when I went for lunch except for one local man. I ate the Kake hot soba which was delicious. Came with what I believe was dashi broth and some garnishes. Would definitely come again. It's hard to find and I didn't know where to park so parked in a lot across the bridge (which might be bus parking but shows up as parking on Google). You'll have to walk up the small road with the metal guardrails on the right. It's the second building to your left as you walk up.

Yakushima Airport

Airport
Regional airport
Yakushima Airport is the sole airport on the island, offering domestic flights from Kagoshima, Fukuoka, and Osaka. Despite its small size, it provides essential amenities such as a restaurant, souvenir shop, and parking facilities. Visitors have praised the warm and efficient service at this tiny airport.
Only arrived here, did not depart. Landing was smooth on the JAL commuter with cool views coming in. Land on the tarmac and walk into the airport with your checked baggage only a few minutes behind. It has a gift shop, restaurant, lockers, and toilets. Rental cars right across the street or taxis readily available.

The tiniest lovely airport in my experience. Since the airplane is small, no long wait for checked luggage to come out. If you arrive at the airport too early for the departure flight, you may not have a place to sit down until the security check opens. The runway is planned to extend to 2000m from 1500m for bigger jets in 10 years timeframe, also the building will be extended or rebuilt.

Flying into this airport is pretty nice. Try to get a window seat on the right side of the plane. That way you can see the island and water. The airport is small, but relaxed with a lot of character. I wish more airports could be like this.

Tiny airport with one runway and barely any flights besides Japan Air Commuter

Love this tiny, quaint airport that's still amazingly self-sufficient with its check-in counter, souvenir shop, and cafeteria. Do note you'll need to pre-purchase your meal at souvenir shop first before heading to the cafeteria. Good for a last meal at Yakushima with awesome view too. There might not be much space for everyone during peak season I imagine. Although there is no toilet inside after passing through security, it is possible to seek help from the staff if you urgently still need. Safe flight and look out the airplane window for ground staff waving goodbye! 👋🏾

I’ve never seen such a small airport before. Restaurant and a souvenir shop is available inside. Parking is also available.

Worst. Airport. Ever. Unstructured, slow, no communication. What a mess...

Extremely bad airport. There is no toilet inside the departure area/gate so if you need to use it either you wait or do it before security. Very uncomfortable seating. The AC doesn’t work. I am shocked how they could operate.

Tanegashima Airport

Airport
Tanegashima Airport (TNE) may be small, but it offers a delightful experience for travelers. Located on the picturesque Tanegashima Island, this airport serves as a convenient gateway to the stunning Osumi Islands, which include Yakushima and Kuchinoerabu. Accessing TNE by car is recommended, taking about 50 minutes from various points on the island. For those opting for public transport, buses are available with transfers at Minamitane Town Hall-mae.
Small but good airport. Nice little JAXA display. Helpful friendly staff

Spent the majority of the day here after getting stranded on Tanegashima on the way back from Yakushima the day before due to winds/high waves. Was only able to book the last of the four flights of the day, but arrived early (called to reserve airport shuttle bus the day before) to get on standby in hopes of leaving earlier. No luck, though. Despite that, the women at the front desk were very helpful, and the airport was a nice environment to spend the day in over the Toppy & Rocket terminal. The building seemed newer, with modern concrete design and very high ceilings. There is also a small observation deck you can walk to up top to see the turbo prop plane take off. Lobby got crowded before departures, then mostly cleared out. In the end, while flights went all day (clear visibility, just winds), by the time I took the flight at the end of the day, the Toppy & Rocket service resumed operation. In fact, I think we passed the last/only jetfoil boat of the day heading toward Kagoshima from overhead. So it is possible that I may have been able to get on the jetfoil and back to Kagoshima at the same time as the plane (and without some extra expense, including taking the Kagoshima airport shuttle bus back into town). However, I enjoyed the experience of being at the airport and taking the plane over riding on the boat/jetfoil (I was starting to feel sick the day before with the choppy waters), and if I went to Yakushima again, may just take a plane.

(Translated by Google) small airport. But it's fresh and good. Yakushima, Yonaguni, and Yoron Island had a similar feeling. Direct flights to Osaka are convenient. At the taxi stand in front of the airport Yes, if a taxi is stopped, you might see a crow perched on its side mirror. The driver who is attached to this crow is so kind. It's a heartwarming landscape. We visited many sightseeing spots in Osaka → Yakushima for 6 nights → Tanegashima for 3 nights.

(Translated by Google) This was my first time at Tanegashima Airport (TNE)✈️ I was surprised that it was more compact than I expected💦 It's fine when you arrive, but on the way back you can only enter the waiting room one hour before boarding...😂 I think many people worry and go to the airport in advance, but at this airport you can get there in 40 minutes before departure^ ^ (Original)

(Translated by Google) It's a very small airport, and you have to walk from the plane to the terminal. I really liked how it felt like a regional airport. At the gate exit, there are counters for each rental car company, and once you pass that, you're immediately at the exit. Even on weekdays, there are a lot of passengers, and it gets quite crowded despite its small size!
