Ise in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Ise, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ise is best known for Ise Grand Shrine, one of Japan’s most important Shinto sites, set within tranquil forest and rebuilt on a regular cycle according to ancient tradition. Visitors can stroll the historic Oharai-machi and Okage Yokocho streets just outside the shrine, lined with traditional wooden buildings, local food, and crafts. Nearby attractions include the Meoto Iwa “wedded rocks” on the coast and the wider Ise-Shima area, noted for scenic bays, pearl cultivation, and fresh seafood.
With favorites like Yamaguchiya, Ebiya large cafeteria / Ebiya shop, and Butasute, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Dangoro chaya and Butasute so you can get the best taste of Ise while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nestled in the heart of Ise, Okage Yokocho is a delightful destination that whisks visitors back to the charm of the Edo and Meiji periods. This enchanting area features replica wooden buildings that house an array of craft stores and restaurants, offering a taste of traditional Japanese culture. As you stroll through this recreated village, you'll discover teahouses and shops brimming with local delicacies like Japanese candies and folk crafts.
This is an atmospheric shopping district just outside the Inner Shrine of Ise, hugged by low hills and the sparkling clean Isuzu River. The variety of shops is only overshadowed by the universal quality of all the products. There are gifts, souvenirs, juices, fresh food, snacks, lots of seafood and shellfish, traditional sweets, and lots more. It all looks like the Edo Period, great to lunch or dine before or after your visit to the shrine
Emiel H — Google review
Great streets to have a relaxing walk with loads of different places to have light meals. The traditional buildings were amazing, and such an eye opener. Went down on a weekday at about 230pm and parking was still available. Shops close between 430pm to 5pm so make sure you get your souvenirs & snacks by then.
Jing N — Google review
Some beautiful Edo period buildings set along the bank of the river - but heaving with people. Still, it's worth a visit once you've seen the temples and shrines etc in the area. The best part is by the river, preferably from a nice coffee shop. You'll also find the usual assortment of food and tourist items. There's no fee to enter this shopping area.
Jeremy F — Google review
A great place to look around for souvenirs & food. Several restaurants can be found here too. There were many cute cat decors here too. Definitely a must see for cat lovers.
Aibi Y — Google review
During our visit to Ise, we loved exploring Okage Yokocho, a charming traditional street just near the Ise Grand Shrine. Walking down the cobblestone paths lined with old wooden buildings and glowing red lanterns really made us feel like we had stepped back in time. The street was filled with all kinds of shops selling local products, souvenirs, and delicious treats. We couldn’t resist trying the famous Akafuku mochi, a soft rice cake topped with sweet red bean paste—a true local favorite that’s been around for centuries. We also enjoyed some Ise udon and freshly made croquettes from a popular spot called Butasute. Even though the street was lively with visitors, it still felt peaceful enough to take our time browsing and chatting with the friendly shopkeepers. We even joined a little workshop to make traditional moss balls (kokedama), which was a fun way to get hands-on with the culture. If you’re visiting Ise, Okage Yokocho is a must-see. It’s a great place to shop, eat, and soak up the warm, historic atmosphere of the area. We really enjoyed every moment there.
Gator — Google review
A great variety of food, gifts and souvenirs. Right outside the Grand Shrine entrance. Make sure you go all the way to the end (away from the shrine) for fresh grilled seafood. Also visit the side streets. Try the black sugar dango for something different.
C F — Google review
Strange place - a replica of a traditional village but with sweetshops, giftshops and cafes There are some very nice restaurants, including Tofuya, Haikarasan and Noasobi Dana.
Stu L — Google review
A very famous food street that I wanted to go and finally was able to. There were so many different shops it was so fun to look at each one of them. I loved eating around getting a little bit of food at different restaurants. I also really loved the stores which had vintage items or cutlery and pottery. They also had a stamp rally going on so my friend and I decided to enter it and this was a very good choice because it allowed us to motivate ourselves to actually complete the mission which made us walk a lot. Since the different stamps are scattered around the whole area we had to go from one side to another which was great exercise without even knowing we were exercising.

Udon noodle restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Noodle shop
Udon-ya Fukusuke is a bustling udon shop in Ise, offering outdoor seating and renowned for its soft, thick noodles paired with locally brewed beer. The restaurant's specialty lies in its Ise-style udon, featuring minimal broth and hearty noodles. Diners flock to Fukusuke for its delectable dipping sauce, meticulously crafted with natural soy sauce and bonito flakes to achieve a well-balanced and rich flavor profile.
There are many Ise udon shops in Okage Yokocho area but this is probably the most famous one. The handmade noodle typically sells out before noon. That one and the tsukimi (raw egg) are most popular.
JK A — Google review
I only had the most basic of Ise Udon so it's difficult to go into a lot of detail, but the trademarks of Ise Udon sit very well with my palate. The noodles are thick and yet soft (for those who don't know, that's how they are supposed to be) and the soup is also thick and strong flavoured. The inside is very old fashioned with no real tables. Just pick an unoccupied bench, sit down and wait. Service is extra quick even on busy days.
Barry K — Google review
An udon shop with outdoor seats serving Ise Udon in Okage Yokocho. Ise Udon is known for serving with thicker udon noodles and Tamari soy sauce. I ordered the Tsukimi udon, which means moon viewing udon. It is a simple yet flavourful dish. While the sauce alone is leaning sweet-salty, the egg yolk mellows it out, creating a thick sauce that clings to the udon well, similar to the concept of raw egg yolk in sukiyaki. The udon noodles were thicker than usual, soft and a little rough on the exterior and tastes great while slurping with the sauce. Adding the shichimi on the side gives the dish a slight tinge of heat and evens out some sweetness and saltiness even further. It is a great place to try Ise Udon and the quantity is not too much that you are unable to enjoy other foods and desserts in Okage Yokocho.
Kai G — Google review
A popular restaurant in Okage Yokocho that serves Ise Udon. We queued for about 15 minutes. The line was long but it moves faster than expected. You order first before finding a seat. They will give you a number which the staffs will call once the food is ready to know where you're seated. They will serve the food on your table. An outdoor type of restaurant with several tables available. They have different variety of Ise Udon to choose from. I ordered the Handmade Ise Udon which was served warm. The udon was thicker & soft. It blended well with the broth. Enjoyed our meal here.
Aibi Y — Google review
Great experience here, the food was great, there was an English menu available and the lady that too our order let us know how the order number is pronounced in Japanese for us to listen out for. We were able to pay by card and they were all really nice. There is complimentary green tea on the table too. We got the Udon Noodles with beef and the broth that was left in the bowl at the end was the nicest broth we have had in Japan. There was also a music performance going on right outside as we were having our meal which added to the traditional character of the meal and the experience overall!
Peter — Google review
Iconic udon noodle shop in the old town only serves traditional homemade udon, in hot or cold version, with meat, egg or just plain. All delicious.
Alberto A — Google review
At Udon Ya Fukusuke in Ise, I enjoyed a warm bowl of udon that truly captured authentic local flavors. The restaurant's udon is quite distinctive, with thicker noodles that offer a delightful chewiness and a hearty texture. The broth was rich and flavorful, perfectly complementing the noodles and adding a warm, comforting taste—especially enjoyable on a cold day. Overall, this bowl of udon provided a genuine taste of Japan that left a memorable impression. If you're in Ise, I highly recommend trying the udon at Udon Ya Fukusuke. I'm sure their traditional flavors will surprise and satisfy your taste buds!
Kelvin M — Google review
Interesting atmosphere, super crowded, and you share tables with other people! The place was actually pretty big, but yes it's popular hence the crowd! But don't worry because turnover rate is really high, fast service! And the udon was worth the wait! It's soo nice and tasty, I think the udon texture is the best one I've had so far. Would love to bring friends and family here next time.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Kotai Jingu, also known as Ise Jingu Naiku or Inner Sanctuary, is a significant Shinto site in Japan. Nestled within a forest, this complex comprises multiple shrines that exude solemnity and high reverence. The shrine's architecture seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, creating an atmosphere akin to a divine abode. Visitors can also witness the presence of a sacred horse that once received the emperor.
Very tranquil, even with the crowds of people, and very spiritual. The importance of the site and sanctuaries is really felt here. Everybody who worked here was really eager to help and we were provided with maps in English which gave a description of the different shrines and sanctuaries and a route to follow while exploring the shrine. They also let us know before going in that there were no signs in English and afterwards they asked us a few questions about our experience so that they can improve the experience for visitors going forward. We really felt like people wanted us to explore the culture here and leave with a knowledge of the local customs and beliefs. It was a really enjoyable and informative experience.
Peter — Google review
The atmosphere is deeply serene and sacred, making the walk through the forested grounds feel peaceful. The clear Isuzu River adds to the experience when purifying your hands before entering. It’s a popular spot, but the sense of spirituality remains strong.
Shohei F — Google review
A vast shrine with 2 main shrines (Naiku/Inner Shrine & Geku/ Outer Shrine) & several more shrines. The Inner Shrine is formally known as Kotai Jingu & is dedicated to the sun goddess, Amaterasu Omikami. This spiritual place is definitely worth the visit. Loved how it is surrounded by nature. Definitely a must visit when in Ise.
Aibi Y — Google review
A beautiful place. You won't be able to see the very heart of these holy grounds and the photos around the shrines are forbidden (which is understandable). However, you may be able to see a hen in the woods and insanely clear pond with majestic fish swimming around, which is also alright.
Zuzanna Z — Google review
Considered the most sacred of all shinto shrine, it consists or 2 parts, the Naiku(inner shrine) and the Geku (outer shrine). Quick fact, the shrine is rebuild every 20 years as part of their eternal revival. Do note that there's no photo in the inner scantum of the shrine
Alex W — Google review
For those who are not Japanese: please be prepared to dress respectfully, act respectfully, and talk respectfully within the shrine! I saw one white girl tourist wearing revealing tube top within the shrine today, it’s probably taken as disrespectful act by locals. Please clean your both hands and your mouth at the entrance, people do vow before and after entering the torii gate, (supposed to) not walk the center part of the street after passing the gate (supposingly the center is where gods walk). No taking pictures if it says so. This shrine is not a tourist spot like some other shrines. Please be respectful! Thank you. I know it is for all the other shrines and temples too, but this shrine is really something else for Japanese people. Goddess Amaterasu is known to be the most fierce Goddess. The way to pray: two 90 degree vows, two hand claps, and one more vow at the end to close the 🙏!

Kotai Jingu (Ise Jingu Naikū, Inner Sanctuary) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Visiting Ise Jingu Naikū is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you leave. As a frequent traveler who has seen sacred and historic sites across continents, I found the atmosphere here to be unlike anywhere else — deeply spiritual, serene, and humbling. The walk through the towering cedar-lined paths sets the tone before you even reach the Inner Sanctuary. Photography is restricted near the most sacred areas, which only adds to the sense of reverence and respect. Even without photos, the memory of standing in such a spiritually powerful place is unforgettable. What impressed me most was how seamlessly the grounds balance accessibility for visitors while preserving the sanctity of the shrine. Staff and volunteers are welcoming, and there’s a quiet efficiency in the way the site is maintained. For travelers, I recommend allowing plenty of time here — not just to see the shrine itself, but also to explore the surrounding town of Ise and its traditional streets. This is a destination worth making part of a broader journey through Japan’s cultural heartland. Spiritual Atmosphere: 5/5 Accessibility & Grounds: 5/5 Overall Experience: 5/5
JP O — Google review
Visiting Kotai Jingu, the Inner Sanctuary of Ise Jingu, was a truly special experience for me. It’s known as the spiritual heart of Japan, dedicated to Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and just being there felt incredibly humbling. Crossing the wooden Uji Bridge over the peaceful Isuzu River set the tone for the visit—it felt like stepping into a place that has been cared for and renewed for centuries. The tradition of rebuilding the shrine every 20 years really speaks to the deep respect for renewal and nature in Shinto beliefs. Before entering, I joined the ritual of cleansing at the temizuya, washing my hands and mouth—it was a simple act but helped me feel mentally and physically prepared to be in such a sacred place. Though you can’t enter the inner sanctuary itself, standing quietly at the curtained gate and taking in the minimalist beauty of the unpainted cypress architecture was moving. The whole area is surrounded by towering trees and peaceful paths, making it easy to reflect and feel connected to something bigger. Photography isn’t allowed inside, which actually made me appreciate the moment even more—it’s a reminder to fully experience the shrine with all my senses and respect the space. Overall, visiting Kotai Jingu felt like a spiritual journey. The combination of history, nature, and tradition left a deep impression on me, and it’s a place I’d recommend to anyone wanting to feel the true heart of Japan.

Akafuku Honten is a historic teahouse in Ise, known for its signature treat, Akafuku Mochi. This mochi is a rice cake topped with red bean paste and has a unique shape resembling the Isuzu River. The teahouse, established in 1707, was once popular among pilgrims visiting the area to pray at the Grand Ise Shrine.
When we visited Ise, stopping by Akafuku Honten felt like a must-do, especially after seeing the Ise Grand Shrine nearby. This place has been making their famous Akafuku Mochi for centuries, and it’s truly something special. The mochi itself is soft and chewy, topped with a smooth, sweet red bean paste. We loved that the shape of the mochi symbolizes the nearby Isuzu River—there’s something meaningful and beautiful about that connection. Inside the shop, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. We could smell the roasted green tea and even watched the artisans skillfully handcraft the mochi. Sitting down with a cup of local green tea and enjoying the mochi was a relaxing and authentic experience that made us feel connected to the place and its history. If you’re ever in Ise, eating Akafuku Mochi at the honten isn’t just about snacking—it’s about tasting a piece of tradition and culture. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
Crumpled N — Google review
I’ve known for a long time this shop is so famous for its red bean paste cake(mochi). As I didn’t want to be in a long line, I arrived here at 11:00 or so on a Friday. Fortunately, there were not so many visitors yet. So no hassle, no trouble. I could enjoy to the fullest both the divine taste of two pieces of cake and the ambiance. It makes me calm and refreshed. Next time, I want to visit again with my parents who are also red bean lovers like me. The red bean paste tastes refined sweetness.
Ashley K — Google review
Delicious zenzai (mochi in sweet red bean soup) served with tea. Sweet and delicious, perfect as a mid day snack. Pay at the counter, get a ticket and they’ll assign you a seat. Not necessary to purchase 1 set per person, we shared 1 amongst 2 people. Place is fairly stroller-friendly, we were able to park our stroller with baby inside right next to our seat. Cash or credit card accepted.
Joanna T — Google review
Akafuku at the main store It's exceptional! Freshly pounded mochi with just the right amount of sweet bean paste! It's absolutely delicious, and the main store is the best. Even if you're waiting in line, the entrance and exit are separate, so the turnover is super fast! You can easily get in. ✨ I think it was about 400 yen for two pieces with tea. While it's a little pricey per piece, it's a great price considering you can enjoy it in such a great space. ✨ This is definitely one of the places I'd like to visit when I go to Ise.

They have two storefronts. The river side store serves mochi and the street side serves shaved ice.

Perfect at all, especially in an early winter day. Little cold weather and grey sky make me feel peaceful and comfortable. Please go inside and dine in before u take gift away. I will feel like me. I think they give us free tea and i only need to buy a set of redbean cake (akafuku mochi). Perfect match. Must try. I love Japan

Sarutahiko Jinja, a Shinto shrine in Uji, is a revered holy place recommended by Ota no Mikoto for Sarutahiko Okami. Tsukiyomi-no-miya Shrine, a collection of four wooden sanctuaries established in the 9th century, is dedicated to the Shinto deities representing the sun and moon. This tranquil haven serves as an ideal location for prayers before embarking on new endeavors. Despite its smaller size compared to Ise Shrine, Tsukiyomi-no-miya exudes a serene and invigorating atmosphere.
A five minute walk from the train/bus station but a bit far away from Geku and Naiku. Has a lovely serene stone walkway up the hills. The shrine also enshrines Izanagi and Izanami, parent gods of Amaterasu-Omikami and Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto. A great visit if you want to offer prayers to the divine family.

Beautiful, Surreal and Peaceful Area We love visiting Japanese temples and parks when they are within each even better. The temples are based on the same design within this area including Ise, however each have their own uniqueness. Today we had a very nice experience with locals where we were all extending our arms and hands towards a Cyprus tree that was very symbolic for the people. The energy was amazing and pulsating through our arms with about 20 people around us, absolutely wonderful. Scenic spot
Meoto Iwa, also known as the Wedded Rocks, is a renowned natural wonder in Japan located in the Ise Shima area. These two rocks stand in the sea and are connected by a thick straw rope, symbolizing a harmonious marriage and home safety. The area is considered sacred and features the Futami Okitama Shrine, dedicated to the god Sarutahiko for good luck, family safety, and traffic safety.
In the winter, it's very cold and windy, but worthy. Not crowded on Friday afternoon. We took CAN bus from Naiku-mae to Ise Sea Paradise -mae, approx. 26 minutes, then passed through a carpark, and Futamiura Jinja Shrine. The Wedded Rocks were in the sea off Futami Okitama Jinja Shrine. The 9-meter husband rock and the 4-meter wife rock are joined by a Shimenawa (thick rice straw) rope. It the past, Japanese thought theres rocks were a gate separating the divine world from the human world. Now, they represent happy marriage. The rope will be renewed every May, September, and December. From May to July: The sun rises exactly between 2 rocks. From November to January: The full moon appears between 2 rocks Transport: 1) Mie Kotsu Bus CAN bus (or Bus 41 from Iseshi station To Toba), get off at Ise Sea Paradise-mae, 2)15 minutes walks from JR Futaminoura station, 3) by car, free carparks available.

Meoto Iwa is located 15 min walk from Futamiura Station It is two rock outcrop linked with a rope (Shimenawa). The larger rock is husband and the smaller rock represent the wife. The rock behind the husband and wife is the frog. The two rock symbolize happy marriage and fertility. This is a popular location for sunrise. There are many frog status around the temple. It will bring good fortune. Not many public transport around this area. It will be better to drive. The waves might be strong and may splash onto the walkway. This is a good location for sunrise.

A very scenic spot away from lots of tourist. Came here on a cloudy morning so it was really nice to walk around. Besides the wedded rocks, there are also other attractions such as temples, shrines and also shops to buy some local products. The only downside here is there is not many taxis around. To go around this area, you will need to rely on busses or train.

Wedded rock is really a place for couple to make a wish together. Near shrine provides amulet options. The rare one is cleansing sand and sacred herb. These amulets purified your house and your mind. With inner peace, you can accomplish many things and live happily together. The glass loop here is for purify your body and cleanse out illness. You can let it touch your ill body part and pray. Then, leave it at the shrine or in front of the rock area. Frog here seems to be money related wish.

It's quite a romantic place to visit, two rocks married to each other, destined to oversee such a beautiful coastline together for eternity. Come here during sunset, if you're lucky you'll get an epic photo. We caught clouds, but it was still very neat to see the famed rocks for ourselves.

We took the bus from Toba bus Station, there is a even a designated tourist advisory there. The staff advised us on bus routes and timing and it was an easy trip there. You would spend 30min-1hour there (if youre not praying) and are just there as tourists. We went at high tide and got splashed lots! It was an easy walk from the bus stop, you will wall through the mall that sells many souvenirs and has toilets and lockers. (its a very short trip so won't recommend to use lockers unless you really have a lot of stuff)

Dangoro Chaya is a teahouse situated in the heart of Okage Yokocho, offering a convenient respite for visitors. The establishment operates with a ticket vending machine to streamline food orders and serves up delectable dishes like tempura soba with seasonal deep-fried vegetables and shrimp, Matsuzaka beef soba, and Matsuzaka beef skewers. Additionally, it's known for its Akafuku Zenzai, particularly popular after the New Year's visit.
Wonderful place. We had some sushi triangles that were fabulous - the staff was so much fun. Came back again and had the beef skewer - tasty!

(Translated by Google) Matsusaka beef skewers 🎶 Enjoy Matsusaka beef easily 🙄 After visiting the Naiku Shrine, we took a walk and came here. We took a quick break. It's tourist price, so I don't know if it's expensive or cheap, but I enjoyed the atmosphere. It's a little cheaper if you order it with Shiawase (beer)! They grill it after you order, so you'll have to wait a little. It was delicious and relaxing! It was a Saturday and it was crowded, so there were no seats available. While I was wandering around looking for a seat with my ice, a lot of it melted. I usually only go on weekdays, so there are no seats available. The coffee ice with ice on top has a bitter taste for adults. The Akafuku ice is consistently delicious. The bean paste and mochi come out from inside. (Translated by Google) I stopped by a little after 10am on the 21st. My favorite character was eating salmon onigiri and beef skewers during the Special Ise episode of Timeless Man. I couldn't find the beef skewers on the menu (or maybe I just couldn't see them), so I got the salmon and plum onigiri 🍙. The staff member explained to me where to pick up and return my order, and that there was a self-service area for water and tea. The pot next to the tea had "water" written on it, so I grabbed a paper cup that was next to it... Another staff member pointed out to me that I should get one from the paper cup next to the tea. In that case, I thought there was no need to put a paper cup there. 💦 The salmon onigiri was just the right amount of salt and was delicious! However, the moment I took a bite of the plum, something felt strange. When they served it, the plum was still there, with the seeds still in it. The plum inside also had seeds in it. I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence or if it's always like this... I picked up the seeds myself and ate them together. Please be careful if you order this onigiri 🙏 (Original)

Check the website for details. It's filled with smooth bean paste and two shiratama mochi (rice flour dumplings). It's quite large, so one would be perfect for two people to share. I tried Akafuku ice cream, and I didn't know they had chestnut ice cream either! I've heard of the sweet orange and strawberry flavors, but I didn't know about the chestnut flavor! I enjoyed my Akafuku ice cream while watching the kagura drumming that started next to me. Enjoying it while watching the drumming might be a special privilege of Dangoro Chaya. Meat dish restaurant
Nestled near the south entrance of Okage Yokocho, Butasute is a culinary gem that has been delighting meat lovers since 1909. This unique establishment specializes in high-quality Ise beef, showcasing its dedication to premium Japanese black wagyu. The name "Butasute," which translates to "discarded pork," reflects the founder's preference for beef over pork, setting the tone for this beloved butcher shop.
The croquette potatoes are some of the best I've eaten. Sure they are small, but the flavour is very very good. They taste like they've been properly fried in good quality beef fat. The mince katsu is also pricey for size but is easily one of the, if not the best examples of this I've had in the country. Very very meaty and bursting with flavour.

Sushikyu is a well-known eatery situated in the scenic Okage Yokocho district, offering exceptional Japanese cuisine. This establishment receives constant recognition for its tekone sushi, making it a must-visit destination. Despite occasional queues, guests are rewarded with exquisite and artfully arranged lunch sets. The flavorsome dishes served here make the wait worthwhile and provide excellent value for money.
We both had the 伊勢路膳 set which consists of 8 different small dishes and the Mitsusaka beef slices. The dishes were well-presented and seasoned. The steamed beef was outstanding. We had lunch around 1 PM with no waiting time. The dining area is on the second floor, which might be a bit difficult for elderly people. There weren’t many options, but all the food selections were good. It was 35 degrees outside today, and the air conditioning in the dining area wasn’t very good. I had the famous Tekone-Sushi The sushi rice was well seasoned, but the bonito was just too salty and not very tasty I was a little disappointed because I had high expectations
Harumomo — Google review
A must eat when at Ise-Shima is Tekone Sushi, which is actually a chirashi don with red fish only. In this case, I had it with bonito at Sushikyu, in Okage Yokocho for 1500 yen. Tekone Sushi was a flavor bomb, no additional shoyu required. The bonito was already marinated with shoyu and so it tasted salty enough. The slices, fresh, not fishy at all. The red vinegar rice was also more vinegary than usual shari and act as a perfect complement to the very powerful bonito slices. The set also comes with soup and a small side vegetable, but those were pretty much forgettable, just serving as sidekicks to Tekone Sushi. Overall, a very enjoyable meal. For someone like me who likes bold flavours, the fish and rice were unapologetically savoury and vinegary. I felt for some chirashi dons, it may be over or underseasoned, but here, seasoning was not necessary as the flavours were already bold and marinated. One thing I would like was some wasabi to cut through especially the fish, as sometimes eating it alone was too salty. I would also like the fish to be a little more fatty.
Kai G — Google review
Nice atmosphere and food were excellent. Fresh marinated bonito on the red vinegar rice. It looks too much but the bowl was shallow so could eat everything. I additionally Tororo on the side. Tororo was already salty enough. I enjoyed Tororo with bonito eat together. I’d love to eat them again.

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Toyouke Daijingu (Ise Jingu Geku, Outer Sanctuary), then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Kongosho-ji Temple. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Toyouke Daijingu (Ise Jingu Geku, Outer Sanctuary) is a vast and ancient complex in Ise City, surrounded by lush trees and a river. It consists of two Shinto shrines, with the Toyoke Grand Shrine, also known as the Outer Shrine, being dedicated to Toyoke Omikami.
You're greeted by a sense of calm and awe as you walk through the torii and past the small bridge. While we came here during golden week and it was certainly buzzing from extra activity, this place still kept much of its sacred energy. You could feel the coolness, the aura of the big trees watching over its guests and the shrines they surround, the chi of the ancestors who protect the area, and the care of those who dedicate themselves to preserving the sanctity of the area. If you're looking to visit a shrine and not feel overwhelmed, this is definitely the place to come. So beautiful 😊

The reason Ise Shrine is considered a sacred place is because it is a shrine dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the supreme deity in Japanese Shintoism, and has a deep connection with the Imperial family.

One of, if not the holiest place for the Japanese indigenous belief system 'Shinto'. The first of two complexes that form the ancient ' Ise Jingu', believed to be connected to the sun goddess, from whom the Emperor is traditionally considered a descendant of. This is the outer complex , with the inner complex down the road. You can get there via bus from just outside the shrine grounds. Seemingly made of only wood and thatch , the design is very simple compared to the complexes you've seen in Kyoto or Nara, and even other smaller Shinto shrines scattered around Japan. The emphasis is on the beauty of natural materials and the surrounding woods.

It is said that the proper visiting sequence will be visiting Toyouke Daijingu (outer) before the Kotaijingu (inner). You can enjoy a relaxing walk under the calming and solemn atmosphere, together with the river and tall trees🌲 This power spot definitely give you a refreshing feeling ✨ The omamori selling here are of special colours and designs, don't miss them as the designs are different from those in Kotaijingu~

Tsukiyominomiya, a renowned Shinto shrine in Ise City, is devoted to the worship of moon deities. Despite its modest size, this shrine holds great significance in the region due to its association with the divine. The allure of this sacred place lies not only in its spiritual reputation but also in its tranquil ambiance.

This is Tsukiyomi-gu (a branch shrine of the Outer Shrine of Ise Jingu). Ise Grand Shrine is renowned as a power spot. It consists of 125 shrines, including Kotaijingu (Inner Shrine) and Toyouke Daijingu (Outer Shrine), including branch shrines, auxiliary shrines, and subordinate shrines. The branch shrines are second in rank to the main shrine, with 10 in the Inner Shrine and 4 in the Outer Shrine. Tsukiyomi-gu is a branch shrine located outside the main shrine grounds, where the two deities Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto and Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto-Aramitama are enshrined in the same shrine building. Although it's located in the city, it's surrounded by camphor trees that are hundreds of years old, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Although there aren't many visitors, the dignified space is sobering. It only takes about 10 minutes to visit, so it's a great idea to combine it with your visit to the Outer Shrine.

(Translated by Google) Tsukiyomi-no-miya is a branch shrine of the Geku (Outer Shrine) of Ise Grand Shrine. Its enshrined deity is Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto, the younger brother of Amaterasu Omikami, and the river god of Takagawara. Although the shrine is located in a residential area, the grounds are quiet and pure. The stone-paved approach and rows of old trees give it a different feel to the solemnity of the Geku. It is about a 10-minute walk from the Kitamikomon entrance of the Geku along Kamiji-dori Street. It is said that Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto walked this road on his way to Toyouke-no-Omikami late at night. There is also a subsidiary shrine, Takagawara-jinja Shrine, on the shrine grounds. There is a parking lot, but it can only accommodate three cars, so it is better to walk there than to the Geku. Iseshi Station is a charming and well-maintained transportation hub located near the Geku Outer Shrine of Ise Jingu. It serves as a convenient gateway for tourists visiting the area, with easy access to the Kintetsu Railway connecting it to major cities like Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto. Nearby, visitors can find traditional Japanese inns such as Isegekusando Iseshinsen, known for its proximity to the station and natural hot spring baths.
The mijumaru train runs here early in the morning! Also, this station is very convenient, there is a few shops on the platform and a short walking distance to the entrance of Ise Grand Shrine. There’s also buses outside the station you can take around the city.

The station has two exits and the other one is only accessible after a far walk if you want to cross to the other side from outside. You would have to pay a fee in order to just cross to the other side. It’s definitely inconvenient and borderline annoying because why couldn’t people just transit easily, you know?

Nestled in the heart of Ise, the Sengukan Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan's ancient traditions, particularly the Shikinen Sengu ritual. This centuries-old practice involves reconstructing the sacred Jingu shrine every 20 years, a tradition that dates back to 690 CE. The museum serves as a tribute to this remarkable event and showcases an impressive collection of artifacts related to Shikinen Sengu.
Very beautiful museum on the history and making of Ise Shrine. Educational for knowledge oriented travelers. No photography inside the museum though. The building and the garden itself will be suffice to make an impression on your journey.
Jason H — Google review
I was very dissappointed. The museum itself is beautiful, very interesting and has a lot of informative films and digital, interactive screens. However apart from a very short pamphlet there is no foreign language explanation or support. And using phones is prohibited, so one can not even translate it. As the museum is so modern, I feel like this is an active decision. As a foreigner with deep interest in Japan but no N1 language proficiency, one is basically forced to just walk through quickly, missing out on most information and feeling excluded.
Dominik H — Google review
The museum is beautiful and seems very well documented but it is a shame that a museum located in such a touristic venue as Ise Jingu doesn’t have any English translated content even not a leaflet…
Mathilde H — Google review
English was available. I see other reviews mentioned no English, however this is no longer the case. I was given a free English leaflet which gave a good outline of most of the musuem, and I was also given an English book that gives an introduction to shinto-ism.

The audio guide for non-Japanese speakers as advertised on the website is no longer available. There is no foreign language support whatsoever, but the museum is inexpensive so maybe still worth visiting if you're in the area and have time.

It's beautiful. The displays and presentation and everything are beautiful, but unless your Japanese is very good you'd be better off to buy a guide book to the history, ceremonies, and architecture of the Jingu. The audio guide mostly just tells you what things are without explaining any meaning.

Yamatohime-no-miya Shrine, located within the Ise Jingu outer complex, offers a tranquil worship setting during the evening. Despite the absence of other worshipers, this relatively new Imperial Palace maintains a pristine appearance. Resembling a museum, it is encircled by a fence on its closed days. Accessing it may require parking in an empty space and embarking on a leisurely stroll along its lengthy approach.
One of the most sacred shrine within the Ise Jingu outer complex. The air and the forest smells totally different from the outside world. You could literally feel the holiness once you walked in the gate. There's a bus stop here, also can detour for the museums too.

I visited this place with my daughter to find good shrines and sight seeing spots, which enabled us to feel holy power. Since it was Wednesday at noon, nobody was there, which allowed us to see the shrine calmly. Visiting the Ise the next time encourages us to visit it surely.

(Translated by Google) Although it's located in the city, this shrine has a calm and tranquil atmosphere that makes you feel like you're in the deep forest. I don't like crowded places, so this is one of my favorite shrines. The calmness, filled with a gentle, enveloping warmth, is soothing. I recommend this shrine to anyone looking to relax and calm their mind. (Translated by Google) I visited Yamatohime-gu Shrine and received a goshuin (temple seal). Walking through the deep forest of the main approach, you'll find the shrine at the back, up some stone steps, making for a peaceful visit. Yamatohime-gu Shrine is a branch shrine of the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu. It's said that Yamatohime-no-Mikoto, the deity enshrined there, traveled from country to country in search of a place for Amaterasu Omikami to reside, eventually settling on the banks of the Isuzu River and laying the foundation for the founding of Ise Jingu Shrine. I received the goshuin (temple seal) at the Yadoya. Amulets are also available for purchase. Nearby are the Jingu Chokokan (temple hall), Jingu Agriculture Museum, and Jingu Art Museum, where you can experience the history and culture of the shrine. Exiting from the back approach is convenient as it's close by. By bus, get off in front of Chokokan and it's right there. By car, enter at the Yamatohime-mae traffic light on Miyuki Road. The parking lot next to the shrine is small, but the parking lot behind the Jingu Art Museum is larger and has restrooms. (Translated by Google) I walked quite a distance on August 31st. I was desperate after visiting Tsukiyomi-gu Shrine. I was about ready to give up around 6 PM, but then I saw a sign saying it wasn't open at night, so I looked around the shrine in the dark before heading home. I had a photo, so I'll post it here. People from all over the country come here with special feelings, so shouldn't this shrine, which is part of the Inner Shrine, behave properly? If the Inner Shrine accepts worshippers until 7 PM, then this shrine should do the same. It's not so much disrespectful to the guests, but to the deity enshrined there. It seems like it's become like the deity is enshrined there, being disrespectful to people who have come to this special place. I'm getting tired, so I'll stop here, but the priest in charge didn't seem to have a good attitude, and I feel sorry for Yamatohime-no-mikoto, who is said to have made a special contribution to the shrine... is that too much? I often feel refreshed after leaving a shrine, but this was extremely rough. Of all places, it happened on the way back from Ise Grand Shrine.

Brewpub
Ise Kadoya microbrewery, known for its award-winning craft beers, including the prestigious IBA Gold Awards, is a must-visit spot in Ise, Mie Prefecture. This small yet renowned brewery opened its doors in 1997 and quickly gained international recognition by winning their first global beer prize just six years later.
As an American I am absolutely blown away. The beer easily matches what a great American brewer can make. Their NE IPA was absolutely fantastic. I had a large Oyster dish as well and everything was unique and flavorful. If you like beer then this is a place that you must go to when visiting Japan. Oh and it's in a very very old historic structure which just adds to everything.

After visiting Ise Grand Shrine, we found a bar called Ise Kadoya Beer in the nearby old street. The weather was extremely hot, so the seven of us immediately decided to order a drink to cool down. The IPA inside was decent, but what really stood out was a special beer made with sake yeast. It was incredibly refreshing with a slight sourness, very drinkable and enjoyable. This unexpected beer experience added a cool and delightful touch to our trip.

Kongosho-ji Temple, a serene Buddhist temple established in 1609, is renowned for its collection of significant paintings, sculptures, and cultural artifacts. The temple is famous for its stunning hydrangeas that bloom in June and is believed to bestow good health upon visitors. Nestled near the summit of Mt. Asakuma on the Ise-Shima Skyline, it offers a peaceful retreat where guests can enjoy green tea and engage with the welcoming resident monk.
Not too many people in a Tuesday in November. Very beautiful place, quiet and peaceful. The drive to and from was one of the most beautiful drives I have been on. Must see!!

Temple is near the Asama viewing point, so just walk down the hill (7min) if you have the time. It’s a Buddhist temple not a Shinto Shrine so the setup is slightly different. goshuin still available but it’s only from 9am -3pm. There’s a cemetery behind the temple that might be worth visiting. At the same time, do respect the deceased.

(Translated by Google) This is a magnificent temple! I'm embarrassed to admit it, but at first, I didn't even know it existed. By chance, I happened to see a YouTube video of Sasaki Kuranosuke visiting Ise Grand Shrine. He said that if you visit Ise Grand Shrine, you have to visit Futami Okitama Shrine → → → Geku → → → Naiku → → → Kongoshoji Temple, so I added this temple to my itinerary. Thanks to that, I learned about something called a sky postbox, and I was able to become a wizard and fly through the sky, and I also got to go to a place with a panoramic view of Toba Bay and Ise Bay, making it a truly memorable trip. 😅💦💦💦. Speaking of this temple, I was captivated by its beauty. The cedar trees were so thick, and they were so tall, they were absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, in Sasaki Kuranosuke's YouTube video, he met Amaterasu Omikami and saw Kukai's Amaterasu Omikami, but unfortunately the temple was closed and I couldn't see it. I was a little disappointed that I had come to see that, but I'm really glad that I was able to come here. The stupas were particularly impressive. I don't know where the others are, but it was my first time seeing one and I was surprised. Anyway, this temple has a lot to see, so if you're in Toba, be sure to visit! Culinary Arts Sushi Katsura Geku offers an exceptional dining experience with a focus on fresh and well-selected seafood. The lobster sushi and miso soup made from the lobster head were highlights, showcasing the restaurant's creativity. The mixed sashimi, including scallops and chu toro, was described as superb. Additionally, the Matsusaka sirloin steak served with unique dipping sauces was a delightful surprise. Guests also praised the recommendation of local sake to complement their meal.
It's a tourist spot but the food quality delivered was top. The lobster sashimi was a must try. Super fresh and sweet. The head would be made miso soup afterwards. The fried oysters were crunchy in the outside and creamy inside. Oh my. The beef tendon stew was another highlight. Service was very good. English menu available. As there are not many restaurants opening at night in the area, this restaurant is a good choice for dinner 🍽️ Meal sets on seafood/Matsusaka beef (松阪牛)/sushi are available with affordable prices. We ordered Matsusaka beef sukiyaki (すき焼き) and toubanyaki (陶板焼き) meal sets. The sneezing sounds made us mouthwatering and the beef was fine yet preferred the sukiyaki set more. The volume served was just right to girls but it's fine as you can still find some suppers for night in the area.

We had a fantastic meal here. The seafood was super fresh and well chosen. We had lobster sushi which was amazing. They then offered to cook the lobster head into a miso soup. Delicious. The mixed sashimi which included scallops and chu toro was superb. We also ordered the Matsusaka sirloin steak which they served with wasabi, daikon and black vinegar as dipping sauce- a revelation. A small cosy restaurant with many years of experience specialising in udon noodles. It is not your usual chewy textured noodle, but slightly softer. I had the beef udon noodles with a raw egg on top. The dark broth is slightly salty and full of umami flavour. The price is reasonable and we spent less than 3000 yen for 2 bowls of noodles and 1 bottle (330ml) of beer.

The staff was attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. The cozy atmosphere added to the overall enjoyment of the meal. If you're looking for a place that combines delicious food with excellent service, I highly recommend. It’s a perfect spot for both casual dining and special occasions.

Good vibe with several choices of meals, beef, seafood etc. Grilled scallop here is good as is recommended item.

The best restaurant on this street in terms of ambience, decor, food quality, service, and price! Sets were large, and we enjoyed the free flow of dashi. We always drop by this restaurant when we are in Ise.

We visited Ise Jingu when a typhoon was hit during our vacation. We were soaking wet when we explored the shrine and needed a place to dry off and eat something. Some stores and restaurants closed earlier due to the weather but this restaurant welcomed us. They offered us some Dashi(lobster, vegetables and fish based soup) samplers so we sipped them during our meals and these Dashi made us warm. We ordered the beef bowl and sea bream which both were good. Enjoyed it while the storm was going on. The service was very nice and polite but we felt a little guilty that they didn't go home yet. We would recommend this restaurant especially if you are in the area.
