The Statue of Tatsuko is a golden sculpture located in Nippon Hot Spring Village by Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The statue depicts the fairy tale of a girl who turned into a dragon after drinking the spring waters to appeal for youth and beauty. Visitors can enjoy kayaking on the beautiful blue lake and explore small shrines selling amulets nearby.
The nature and area was so beautiful covered in snow. Was worth it going out and looking at the statue with the snowy mountains in the back. You pay 200¥ for parking but when you give the ticket back to the shop it acts as a coupon to get 200¥ discount on anything you want to buy in the shop, so me and my wife got some chocolates for the drive back.
Coenraad K — Google review
When visiting Lake Tazawa, don’t miss the chance to say hi to Tatsuko. The golden color of Tatsuko’s statue, together with the blue of the lake, will catch your eye. Be sure to bring warm clothes unless you’re coming in the summer.
Suda N — Google review
It was raining hard but I’m happy we made the stop to see this. My love for Lake Towada in Aomori made me lol. 500¥ for parking. This lake is the deepest in Japan so be careful playing in the water. Lots of auto campgrounds around the lake.
Candy R — Google review
A good spot around the lake. On a good day, the lake view is amazing from this spot. The parking right in front of it is paid but if you buy from the store you don’t need to pay the parking fees.
Mohit P — Google review
This was worth the drive. We stayed in Morioka and decided to drive to see the statue of Tatsuko. It was definitely worth it. It’s so peaceful and beautiful there. It was pretty cold, but we still loved it. There were just a few other tourist taking photos, so no one got in each other’s ways. There is a parking area where you pay ¥200, but they give your money back when you return the ticket.
Diosemil S — Google review
On 20 Jan, 2025, my wife took me here to see the statue. While the sculpting work didn’t appeal to me, I strived to find a perspective to bring out its best. I didn’t succeed until I took the last image of it.
Peter C — Google review
There is paid parking across the road from the statue, but it is for customers of the nearby shop only. Park down the road instead and walk up about 100m.

Lake Tazawa is a stunning volcanic lake with a depth of 1,388 feet and a perimeter road that stretches for 12 miles, offering breathtaking viewpoints. The Gozanoishi Shrine, also known as the sitting stone shrine, holds historical significance as it was where Lord Satake Yoshitaka rested during his visit to the lake in 1650.
On 20 Jan, 2025, I drove my wife here from the Akita town centre. The Lake is naturally beautiful. It was one of the highlights while travelling to our onsen destination in the mountains.
Peter C — Google review
One of the prettiest lakes in Japan. As a matter of fact, it’s also the deepest lake in Japan. The weather was pretty good when we went there and were lucky to see the Tazawako marathon. There are plenty of restaurants around the lake. Definitely recommend to go here.
Mohit P — Google review
The deepest lake in Japan. We recommend taking a 40-minute cruise on a high-speed pleasure boat from Tazawako Rest House. The emerald green water surface at the lakeside changes to a beautiful blue as you head out to sea. Because it contains aluminum, it becomes a beautiful color when reflecting sunlight. Due to the high transparency of the lake, U can clearly see the flocks of Japanese dace. In the past, Kunimasu (a type of trout) that could only be found in Lake Tazawa lived there, but when a power plant was built, acidic water from the hot springs flowed into the area, making it extinct. The scars of natural destruction can be seen in the endlessly blue lake.

Amazing scenery, must go!

Took the bus service B that does a circular loop around the lake for 1210 yen - it was definitely value for money as it allows for u to take the bus and drop off at multiple stops. Not that it has enough frequency for u to do that. But it stops for 10-15mins at several spots of interest like at the statue which is near the Rose Hotel and a forest park good to trek at. I personally find the scenery best there. Then it stopped at the shrine before returning to the station. It makes other stops along the way. Look out for the signs. I personally liked the “Citizen’s Park” which was about 25mins walk from the the entrance of the lake. It had lovely trees which were transforming from the colour of spring. I did not take the ferry but would skip it in view that the bus travels around the lake.

From Akita Station to Tazawako Station is 1h by bullet train, 2h by local train. Although it takes some time to access, it is a place worth visiting. We visited here in early March 2024. There is still certain snow left, the mornings and evenings are bit cold. The calm blue surface of the lake surrounded by a forest covered with white snow was so awesomely beautiful! Tazawako Station is spacious, and nearby you can also eat local specialties like Kiritanpo and Inaniwa Udon. You can also access the sulfuric Nyuto Onsen or ski slope with good snow in about 30 minutes by bus.

Went on a boat tour looping around the lake. Was awesome to see the foliage and the emerald colors of the waters. Ticket was 1400 yen. Throw fish bait for 100 yen and they will swarm like piranhas.

Gozanoishi jinja Shrine is situated by the scenic Lake Tazawa, boasting a striking red torii gate. The shrine is dedicated to Tatsuko, who legend says transformed into a dragon in pursuit of eternal beauty. Its name originates from Yoshitaka, the Satake Clan lord who rested at the 'Gozanoishi' rocky stretch in 1650.

You can’t help but stop here while you driving around the lake. Every thing is closed but very serene.
Julin L — Google review
A nice photo spot, but not much else going on. The local bus gives tourists about 10 minutes to hop off and snap a photo - which isn't long enough for any appreciation of the scenery or the tranquillity of the torii gate. So, a lovely spot - but mostly underappreciated.
Wex V — Google review
We stumbled upon this place during our drive around the lake, so glad we did! It's a beautiful shrine, tori gate by the lake and it was not busy at all unlike the ones at Hakone or Miyajima where you've to queue for hours to get a good photo. This was absolutely beautiful, peaceful and a calming experience.
Thomas G — Google review
Incredibly gorgeous spot I just happened to bike right onto. Little fish swimming right next to the water.
Alec G — Google review
Beautiful spot around Tazawa lake. We visited as part of the circular bus route, where a short time was given to admire the picturesque tori gate on the shores of the lake. The shrine is dedicated to the spirit of Tatsuko, whose statue is further around the lake. She allegedly guards the lake in the form of a dragon, after transforming through visiting the lake for 100 days, praying to keep her beauty. Particularly striking in winter.
Gareth M — Google review
Amazing view in winter of the tori gate in snow over the lake. Its striking in the backdrop of the lake. The loop bus only stops here 10 mins. There is a temple opposite to it but the Tori is what you want to focus on. The bus might have a crowd of people who want to take pictures.

It's sad for visitors that tourist spots like this one are left in a lonely state. I hope it will become lively again in some way. Yama no hachimitsuya is a unique honey shop located near Lake Tazawa in Japan. The shop offers a wide variety of honey-based products, including skin care items and vinegar drinks. Visitors can enjoy free samples and purchase honey soft serve ice cream, with the chance to roll dice for chocolate bee toppings. Adjacent to the shop is a cafe serving delectable options like pizza, salad, pasta, and desserts with the unexpected addition of honey as an option for all meals.

I really enjoyed the Pizza, the garlic shrimp was my favorite. It's interesting that they provide honey at the table in case you want to put that on the pizza. It definitely changes the flavor. They also have unlimited refill drinks here, something that's is not often found in Japan. I would definitely recommend this place. You can tell that they use fresh ingredients.

This honey/bee restaurant is a wonderful option for anyone visiting this part of Japan, and if you happen to be hungry They serve you tasty pizza, salad and pasta. There's also an option for desserts, such as cake, as you would expect What's a little unexpected is that they always have honey as an extra option to all their meals, which is the selling point of this place. There's lots of honey, and I recommend you give it a try as you eat Other than that, the food is solid. Nothing too amazing, but it will fill you up and thanks to the added honey, it is guaranteed to be a unique experience Give it a try!

Surprisingly delicious Pizza. Nice Fluffy base. We had to try Meat and Cheese as this was a local favourite. I find the meat makes the pizza abit sloppy. But if you want a more traditional pizza, just go for the Margherita. It definitely hit the spot if you want something other than Japanese cuisine. Especially after a long day in the snow.

Dakigaeri Valley, located near Kakunodate in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, is a natural gem known for its picturesque wooded gorge, suspension bridge, and stunning waterfalls. The valley is particularly famous for its vibrant fall foliage and offers a serene setting for leisurely strolls along the turquoise mountain stream.
Beautiful walk. We started from the car park second closest (1.5km) from the waterfall and even after trying to work out the signs we returned to our car in 50 minutes. The closer car park is only 1.1km, so park there. It is only about a 5-7 minute walk between the car parks. Bit of water and tunnels are dark so wear appropriate shoes (we have asics trail shoes) and used our smartphone cameras.

The gorge and the waterfall were beautiful. The path follows the river upwards from the dam. There are some dark tunnels on the way, and a rest-shelter a small climb up from the main pathway a bit after the waterfall. At the time of writing (June 2024) the path is closed further up the river after the waterfall, shelter and a small shrine.

We came here on 11 Nov. It was a beautiful trail though the peak of fall foliage has past a week ago. There was repairing work near the entrance and there was heavy rain a day before, thus making the trail lots of muddy water pots. There were not many tourists in the early morning. The sunlight should be better for phototaking near noon. Maybe, the fall foliage peak had past, the parking was free. A 300 Yen parking fee was charged during the fall foliage season.

Tazawako Ski Resort is a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders, offering rentals, trails for all skill levels, and backcountry runs with stunning views of the lake. The resort has hosted the Free Style Ski World Cup multiple times and is renowned for its Japow - Japan powder that attracts visitors from around the globe. While it offers diverse slopes and jumps, some areas may not be well-maintained after heavy use.
Nice ski resort in the mountains near lake tazwako, you can get to there by train/bus but car is a bit easier and more convenient. It’s also located on the road to the Nyuto onsen, so can be easily combined with a stay there. The ski resort is self is good. They have 13 slopes, with all difficulties available. If your lucky and have good weather you can catch a great view from the top of the lake. There is a food court near the lifts, where you can grab some lunch. I recommend checking for coupons on their website, we were able to get a great discount on the lift ticket and rental equipment. The rental equipment includes skis and snowboards and even clothes can be rented.

Tazawako Ski Resort is a lovely, local-friendly resort with very few tourists, making it a great spot for a relaxed skiing or snowboarding experience. The slopes are long and perfect for beginners to practice without feeling rushed. The rental shop staff were super friendly and helpful. We rented our gear for two days and were able to leave it at the shop overnight, so we didn’t have to carry everything back to the hotel—super convenient! And if you're lucky with the weather, the view is breathtaking. Snowboarding down while overlooking Lake Tazawa is an unforgettable experience!

Lovely resort, great for a weekend. Many different levels of slopes and quite a number of jumps scattered about. Just a shame that they do not tidy up the slope (groom) on the far right after it has maxed out the powder with no fresh snow to rejuvenate it. Being chopped up and left harden, no-one used it as not pleasant. A similar position for the other so-called powder slope left of the top lift. Restaurant was good as was the relaxation lounge which also serves lunch. The quads and pair lift far left were very quick. The slope on the far bottom left felt like it was vertical on the off-piste powder. Waist deep - splendid!

Just came back from Tawazako Ski Resort and I’ll review my experience based on a few things - Staff - For some reasons 80% of the staff on the mountain are elderly which means they are VERY limited in English and they couldn’t even point me towards beginners slopes. Chair lift - one of the chairlift is quite aged it doesn’t even have a safety bar and the seats are quite old too, but other chairlifts are okay. Snow - Absolutely powder snow, it is so soft and for beginners like us it didn’t hurt much when we fall unlike Snow in Australia is quite hard. Food - I just can’t complaint when you get to eat delicious ramen on snow mountains. Price - I think the price for chairlift and rental are quite reasonable so not surprise here. Definitely worth a visit if you like skiing or snow boarding, at least we had a blast.

Pizza restaurant
The pizza restaurant, 山のはちみつ屋『ピザ工房』, in the area around Lake Tazawa is well-known for its highly rated tabelog and the option to enjoy meals without any deviations. Apart from being a honey shop, it offers delicious quattro formaggio pizza that surprises with its combination of pork and pizza. The restaurant also serves Napoli-style pizza with a local twist, incorporating ingredients like honey and vegetables sourced from nearby farms.
The pizzas here are really good - springy crust, good sauce, and cheese-sauce-dough ratio. The pizza maker at the back throwing out the doughs looked quite serious and concentrated. The funny part was the robot that comes and serves you the finished product. You order on a screen and everything comes fast.

Pizza shop run by a mountain honey shop or. It is extremely popular on holidays, with 20 people waiting at 11:30 a.m. We were shown to our table after an hour, but shopping at the honey shop while waiting will kill some time. The popular cheese and honey pizza is delicious with elegant honey. There is free-use honey on the table if U want to indulge in honey.

There's a lot to do here besides pizza. They've also got a little cafe + double decker bus if you'd like to eat outside. Pizzas are good and use tasteful amounts of their own homemade Honey, although nonhoneyed options are plentiful. The other restaurant has ice cream and things for dessert. Pretty fun stop!

Amazing pizza. There will be a line. Sp get there early. Best pizza I've had in Japan and super reasonable price. 1200-1600 yen. If you love honey as well there plenty of it available to pour on your pizza.

It offers an impressive selection of wines, beers, and hot drinks including unique creations like Winter orange tea with real orange slices and black sesame soy latte. The restaurant also features a small local produce shop and serves delicious Western-style food. With a fireplace, magazines, blankets for guests to use freely, it's an ideal place to shelter from the cold while enjoying the beautiful views of the lake.

Dining at ORAE is a pleasant surprise! It’s located right by Lake Tazawa. The view from the high ceiling window is very peaceful and healing. Food is also of a very high standard. The homemade hamburger steak has a solid texture and rich in favor and the udon is silky and tasty. The homemade ginger ale is absolutely delicious. If you're on the hunt for a unique dining experience in Japan, look no further than ジンギスカン食堂. This charming eatery offers an exceptional barbecue meat set meal that is sure to satisfy your hunger. What sets it apart is the generous portion of vegetables, far exceeding what you might typically find in a Japanese set meal—it's truly a vegetable lover's paradise!
Highly recommended! Ordered the Jingisukan (Genghis Khan?) set ¥1300 Good cuts of meat Amazing homemade apple tare. The owner was very friendly (His grandfather opened the place about 50 years ago) Must visit!

Excellent barbecue meat set meal with adequate food satisfying your appetite. Vegetables are much more than average amount at Japanese set meal standard. Never have such vegetable experience in Japan! Very good price. Lots of free parking space at main road and you just walk down a short slope to reach the restaurant. There are plenty free parking space around the restaurant too. Summer time and late lunch, therefore not crowded.

Tamagawa Onsen is a serene mountainside inn with simple rooms and a communal hot spring bathhouse. The hot spring water, oozing out from underground at 98 degrees Celsius with a 1 to 2 rate of acidity, is said to have excellent quality. However, visitors are advised to be cautious due to its highly acidic nature. Some guests found the hot spring baths invigorating, while others recommended acclimating gradually due to the intense heat.
I have experienced many onsens in Japan and Tamagawa tops my list as the best one. A unique onsen with amazing water, facilities, scenery and vibes. A must visit.

Super interesting place. Most acidic onsen in Japan apparently. I couldn’t really read the signs in the onsen but seemed like there was 50% and 100% with acid water. In the 100% I felt like I was burning right away. Not totally sure if it’s healthy but it’s an experience 😅.

Real Japanese Onsen at its best! It's like living on the edge of a volcano. It takes about 90 bus ride from Lake Tazawa. People go there believe there is magic medicinal healing through its radium's effect. I cook for myself for dinner but they do provide two meals. The steam room is a must try. The water pH level of 1.5 to 2. Be careful.

Self catering stay. Most acidic onsen in Japan - the baths are separated into pure 100% and blended to lower amounts for easier on the skin. Due to the acidity important to wash properly and avoid eyes. Rooms were old, basic, and fine for the price. Onsen was exceptional. Recommend

Tamagawa onsen promotes itself as a kind of modern day sanatorium, with water that can heal everything from back aches to cancer. This makes it a kind of mecha for the aged, sick and dying who can be found camping around the area in the hopes that the sulphurous air will improve their health. The bathing facilities are varied and interesting, but I don't think I'll go back

Scenic spot
Tamagawa Onsen Nature Research Road is a captivating destination that offers visitors a unique experience with its highly acidic hot springs, boasting a pH of around 1.2—ten times more acidic than lemon juice! Located just an hour's drive from Lake Tazawa in Akita's Senboku city, this area invites you to not only soak in the rejuvenating waters but also to explore rock baths and even sip on the mineral-rich water for health benefits.
This spring boasts the strongest acidic hot spring water in Japan with a pH1.2 and the largest discharge from one spot in Japan. Tamagawa Hot Spring located at the base of Mt. Yakeyama is one of the best hot springs in Japan with the largest discharge from a single source (9,000 litres per minute) and also boasting the strongest acidic spring water (98℃ at its source) in Japan. You can relax and safely enjoy using this facility throughout the year irrespective of the weather. You can delight in the stable temperature setting, radium radiation and hygienic environment of the indoor bedrock bathing area.

(Translated by Google) (August 12, 2025) The Tamagawa Onsen Nature Study Trail is a walking trail where you can experience the "heartbeat of a volcano" simply by walking. As you begin your walk, the smell of sulfur fills the air, and white steam erupts everywhere. The sight of the highly acidic hot spring water (pH 1.2) gushing forth from the main fountain is impressive, providing a real sense of the power of nature. Along the way, there's also a hut for rock bathing, offering a glimpse into the local hot spring culture. Additionally, you may find Beitou stones, found only in Taiwan's Beitou and Tamagawa Onsen. However, as these stones are designated as natural monuments, taking them home is strictly prohibited. Particularly memorable are the heat rising from the ground and the gray, desolate area completely devoid of vegetation. Just outside of this is a lush, green forest, creating a striking contrast between the harsh environment and abundant nature. Autumn is a particularly beautiful season, with the contrast between the desolate Jigokudani and the vibrant autumn leaves, and I personally recommend it. It's a special place where you can experience the harshness and mystery of nature at the same time just by walking. The trail itself is well maintained and easy to walk on, and if there are no road closures it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to go around. You can feel the heat under your feet, and in some places there are signs warning of volcanic gases, so it's important to be mindful of your health and not push yourself too hard when walking. It's enjoyable even just to stop by for sightseeing, but it's especially recommended for those with an interest in volcanoes and hot springs. From memory, there was a trailhead to Mount Yakeyama at the back, and from there it was possible to traverse the mountain via the summit towards Goshogake Onsen. *There are signs warning of bears along the trail.

(Translated by Google) I think it's easier to access from the Semboku City side than from Hachimantai City, as there are fewer sharp curves. Follow the signs as you head down and you'll find a parking lot, but there's a 300 yen fee for the initial period, so most people seem to park in the lot at the back. The parking lot, which charges a fee, only closes at around 4pm during the day, which is inconvenient, so there were hardly any cars parked there. I arrived just before 9am, and there were already many tourists and hot spring bathers, some of whom had brought mats and sleeping bags and were sleeping around. The website and information boards say you can visit various spots in 30 minutes, but there were signs warning of bear sightings everywhere, and the trail was closed off, so you could only go around a small area, and it only took about 5 minutes to go around, so there wasn't much to see, and it paled in comparison to the Goshogake Nature Study Trail. If you want a more dynamic experience and a closer feel to nature, I recommend the Goshogake Nature Study Trail. Tamagawa Onsen has more spaces to rest, so it seems more suited to people who want to enjoy the trail while warming up. (A little further on, there were about three huts where people were sleeping and warming themselves.) As expected of a hot spring resort, the toilets had rusty faucets, which made it a bit intimidating. The faucets were unusual, with no twist mechanism, but a pedal at the foot that you stepped on to get the water flowing. There was also a restaurant and a shop, but they were closed from around noon. (The vending machines were operational.)

The area offers a 50km mountain trail that includes Mt. Iwate, Mt.
B E A utiful! 😂 seriously totally worth the long windy mountain roads (which were really amazing too) and hike (not too bad/long either). Parking at the top is ¥500. Be sure to dress appropriately (it can be cold) and wear hiking 🥾 shoes (you’ll be slipping a lot on the snow if you don’t). God’s creation at its finest 🤩 Note to self: if going with a large group, decide on the meeting spot (eg. By the rest house bathrooms etc.) because phone reception isn’t great.

I went to Kagami-numa in Hachimantai. The ice and snow covers of the pond begin to melt, forming an open ring of water around the edges, leaving a white disk in the center. Next, a puddle gathers in the center of the white disk, making the pond look like a giant eye. It is called "Dragon Eye". It is located on the prefectural border between Akita and Iwate prefectures.

The dragon eye is a famous tourist destination even advertised in Tokyo. The way in which the snow melts and the couler blue makes it look like a dragons eye. Would recommend it, but don't be fooled it's fairly cold up there because of its high elevation.

(Translated by Google) This shrine is located near the Tatsuko statue, the symbol of Lake Tazawa. Made of plain wood with a red roof, the small shrine building juts out over the lake as if floating. It's also known as "Floating Wood Shrine" because it was dedicated to a floating log that washed ashore. Originating from the legend of Princess Tatsuko, the shrine is said to grant blessings such as beauty, eternal youth and longevity, matchmaking, and romantic success. Known as a power spot for beauty and beauty, it's especially popular with female worshippers. Because it appears to be floating on the lake, the red roof reflects the colors of the lake and sky, making it a beautiful sight. However, the area in front of the offering box also doubles as a shrine office selling amulets and other items, making it difficult to put in a donation and pray with people right in front of you. It was distracting to know that there were people looking at and wanting to buy the amulets, and it was difficult to pray in peace. I wish they'd at least moved it to the space next to the torii gate. Although the area around the shrine is small, you can walk around it, so I thought it was nice to be able to walk around and enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Tazawa. Restaurant
Tatsuko Tea House is a restaurant with a vast parking area, making it convenient during busy times. Positioned next to the lake, it offers window seats that provide splendid views of the water. The menu features local specialties like grilled fish and miso tanpo, which are rice balls skewered and coated in miso paste. These dishes are prepared on charcoal, giving them a delightful smoky taste.
Decent food, only tea they sell is from a vending machine outside unfortunately. Epic lake though

This place has a huge parking lot so it’s convenient during peak seasons, also located right on the lake and has some window seats with great views of the lake. We tried the wild herbs sansai , grilled fish and grilled rice ball on stick coated with miso paste called miso tanpo which seems like a local speciality. The fish and the rice balls are grilled on charcoal giving it a nice smoked flavor.

(Translated by Google) *This is my impression as of 2019. I wanted to have a light lunch at a teahouse near the lake, and there was one that was quite busy, so I stopped by. Wow, it's a rather large structure for a teahouse. There are eat-in spaces set up here and there, perfect for taking a break. There isn't much on the menu, but the soba noodles and curry are enough. What I received was wild vegetable soba, which I wanted to warm up. It contains a lot of wild vegetables and has a rich flavor, so maitake mushrooms are also good. The rich flavor of the dashi soup, sweet soup, and inaka soba noodles are irresistible. Also, there was something called miso tampo, so I was curious and tried it. This was the first time I had eaten Kiritanpo, and it still had the flavor of rice. The flavor is somewhere between white rice and mochi, and the charred flavor of the miso goes well with the saltiness. It was a perfect restaurant for a light lunch after crossing the mountain. It gets crowded during lunchtime on holidays, so it might be a good idea to adjust your time accordingly.

Just looking at this place made me feel like I was in the countryside. I don't usually see the hearth at all. So, I ordered "Miso Danpo". Miso danpo is made with ground rice wrapped around a skewer. Then, they coat it with sweet and spicy miso and grill it. It looks very delicious. Well then, let's have the original miso danpo. The rice part is chewy and chewy. It still has the texture of rice, so it's not like mochi. And the miso part is fragrant. You can see the shape of the rice grains. When eaten with miso, it feels like eating miso-grilled rice and is very delicious. I wanted to put the rice part in a kiritanpo pot and eat it. Kakunodate Rekishi-mura Aoyagi-ke, also known as Aoyagi Samurai House, is a museum housed in a former samurai residence. It features an impressive collection of swords, art, artifacts, and a beautiful garden. The site consists of different buildings serving various functions and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history and culture of Japan's samurai era.
This was the highlight of the area, everything is so well maintained it is like a museum (and better maintained than some I have been too). The entry fee (500yen) is well justified, and we spent 50 minutes walking around. I loved the weapons exhibits and how you can pick up a wakizashi and a pike and even try on a samurai helmet. The cafe looked great too but we wanted to save room for lunch. Clean toilets and descriptions in english as well.
Karl C — Google review
One of the biggest samurai residences in Kakunodate. There are plenty of facilities inside including a temple, museums and restaurants. I was a bit sad one can not see more of an actual house. However it’s great one can see the house of samurai in Kakunodate, it’s different from what we saw in Kanazawa samurai houses for instance. The entrance fee was 500 yen in 2025.
Culture T — Google review
Visiting the Samurai Village in Kakunodate, Akita felt like stepping back in time. The quiet streets lined with black wooden fences and preserved samurai houses told stories of Japan’s Edo-period elegance and discipline. I explored beautifully maintained residences, admired antique armor, and felt a deep respect for the samurai spirit that still lingers in the air. The autumn leaves made everything more magical—a perfect blend of history, beauty, and calm.
Ma. E — Google review
This is a very large samurai house with many interesting exhibits, including samurai armor, weapons, and other artifacts. It’s one of the biggest houses and you can easily spend an hour here. Friendly staff and not very crowded.
Bull D — Google review
For English Speakers. They have guide map here in English to help you through, some signs do not have English on it so you may need to use your phone to translate what certain description cards say. Takes about an hour to walk through depending on how much reading or looking you do. All in all still worth checking out this samurai house. A lot of history ran through the family and see what items were donated for this museum.

The Ishiguro-ke Samurai House is a 19th-century home of the Ishiguro samurai family, offering tours with katana swords, armor, and artifacts. Situated behind an imposing black wooden fence called a sasarakobei in the northern part of Bukeyashiki-dori, visitors enter through a gate with a gabled roof typical of Edo period samurai residences.
What a pleasure to be able to enter into this house and witness some history. Truly enjoyed experiencing this and would recommend it. You can even try out a Samurai Helmut! It's a great walk from the train station and well work out!

One of the most prominent samurai houses in Kakunodate. A bit disappointing that one can not see much of the house but as far as I understood the family still is residing there. Otherwise really great visit and to have a look at the interiors and all the details. There is a small museum on side.
Culture T — Google review
A very interesting visit to the only samurai house in the area which is still inhabited by the original family. The friendly staff had prepared some English sheets that they showed us and that made a very big difference for the experience. There were few visitors and only part of the house is shown, obviously.
Bull D — Google review
There are some old samurai houses with an entrance fee. As this included a short guide tour, I chose this one. They say the descendants of the Ishiguro's are still living in the back of the building. It was worthwhile to visit. The entrance fee is 500 yen.

Very warm welcoming host from the House of Ishiguro. After a brief introduction, you may tour the original home of samurai at will. Lots of armory and literature on display. You may learn a little history and this family's connection with the old era lord. Very interesting place to visit!

Thank you for the detailed explanation and hospitality yesterday. We were so lucky of having the chance to talk to the descendant and met his lovely mum during our visit. How proud you must be for being the 13th generation of the family. Thank you for your effort of preserving the house nicely so that we are able to see how life was many years ago.

There are only a few rooms open to the public, but I still think it is worth a visit. Guides will show you the important features of the rooms (in English) and there is a lovely view of the garden.

It was a total waste of money, our party went in and out probably within 5-10 minutes and all felt totally scammed. I guess the only good thing was, it took us only about 5-10 minutes. Aoyagi was way better, not exactly sure why they are equally famous.

Museums
Nestled away from the hustle and bustle, the Hirafuku Kinen Bijutsukan Memorial Museum offers a serene escape into the world of modern Japanese art. This museum pays homage to the artistic legacy of father and son duo, Hirafuku Hoan and Momoho, both hailing from Kakunodate. Visitors can explore an array of captivating paintings by local artists spanning various eras, all housed within a building that beautifully contrasts with its traditional surroundings.
I am usually not a fan of museums; I almost passed by it but decided to walk inside because it was cold outside. The 300 yen (about $3) was a nominal entrance fee to warm up inside. As I started to walk around I noticed the visual paintings on display from various artists of 1800s and 1900s era. It was a very pleasant way of learning about the history and culture of Japan. My favorite painting was the one titled "Akita's old city" from 1899.

Hinokinaigawa Tsutsumi Park, located in Akita ken Kakunodate, is a renowned spot for cherry blossom viewing. The park features over 800 cherry trees along the Hinokinai River, creating a stunning 2km stretch of pink blossoms during late April to early May.

(Translated by Google) The cherry blossoms in Hinoki Uchikawatsutsu Park are really beautiful. Unfortunately, the sky was not beautiful when we came. It was cloudy and there was light rain from time to time. The whole weather was very cold. It was a pity because the cherry blossoms were in bloom very beautifully. The most famous thing about Hinokiuchi River Tsutsumi Park is the approximately 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that stretch for about 2 kilometers. These cherry blossoms were planted by local residents in 1934 to commemorate the birthday of Emperor Akihito (then Crown Prince). • In spring, from late April to early May, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, a spectacular "Sakura Tunnel" is formed. It is one of Japan's "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots." Park features • There are walking trails and resting benches along the river bank for visitors to rest while admiring the flowers. • The cherry blossom trees next to the river embankment are older but well-maintained, attracting a large number of tourists every year to enjoy the cherry blossoms. • When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the petals flutter in the wind and contrast with the clear water of the Hinokiuchi River. The scenery is picturesque. Other activities and facilities • The "Sakura Festival" is held every year during the cherry blossom viewing season, creating a lively atmosphere in the town. • The Hinokiuchi River itself is also a popular spot for ayu fishing, but fishing requires a license in advance. • Nearby restaurants serve local delicacies such as grilled sweetfish in the spring. Transportation and open information • The park is open all day and admission is free. • It is about a 15-minute walk from Kakunodate Station on the Akita Shinkansen Line. • During the peak flower viewing season, there will be traffic control in parks and towns, so it is recommended to plan your trip in advance. Summarize Among the cherry blossoms in Hinokiuchi River Tsutsumi Park, the most attractive thing is the 2-kilometer-long cherry blossom tunnel formed by about 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. When it blooms in spring, the scenery is spectacular. It has complete walking trails, rest facilities and a lively cherry blossom festival. It is a very representative cherry blossom viewing spot in the Tohoku region.

At the gift shop, I bought a "Shimofurikawa Tea Canister Made from Marbled Leather," which doesn't use a tin. Since you're free to touch the canister, I looked inside and noticed a sort of glue smell. I asked a shop assistant about it, and he explained that the glue is animal glue, and that the smell will go away if you put some unwanted tea leaves in it for 2-3 days. I tried it with two packs of green tea teabags from the hotel room, and the smell went away without any problems. I was able to buy a memento of a good trip. Kakunodate Samurai Residence Street

4.4
(1006)
Historical landmark
Kakunodate Bukeyashiki dōri, also known as Samurai Residence Street, is a must-visit destination in Akita, Japan. This historic street is famous for its well-preserved samurai houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Visitors can stroll through this beautiful village surrounded by vibrant maple foliage in autumn and blooming cherry blossoms in spring.
One of the most memorable places we visited on our holiday. With snow on the trees, visiting the Samurai houses made this magical. It thankfully was not over crowded with tourists. Driving through the mountains above Morioka in the thick snow made this even more special to get to this wonderful town. We would love to return in spring to see the river lined with trees in full splendor. Highly recommend and may this incredible place never be over run by tourists.
Tracey W — Google review
A great place to learn about samurai culture and life in the Edo period. The street features well-preserved residences with artifacts and historical displays that may require tickets, which you can buy at the entrance. I visited in summer, so it lacked the cherry blossoms or autumn colors seen in photos, but it was still a fascinating and peaceful walk through history. Worth a visit if you’re coming to Akita.
Anthony C — Google review
It took about 15 minutes walk from station and the directions were very clear. There were many signs along the way. There were many flyers about this place at the station. It took another 15 minutes walk from the entrance to the end of old samurai residences also depending on the pace of your preference. Some buildings were free but some others did require fee to get in. There’s a public restrooms about halfway located in the small park on the left side. Also a few restaurants along the way but not a lot so it would get crowded during meal time.

Absolutely tipping it down and the blossoms weren't quite out. Win some-lose some. Still worth the trip and full marks to the rickshaw pullers as they braved the wind and rain.

I visited the first weekend of February, and it was so charming. The shops, museums and restaurants were amazing. The merchants and restaurant owners were so friendly! The ambiance was even more special as it was during a blizzard.

surprising relaxing and non touristy we visited 3 old houses free of charge and also a odon shop and a miso shop 300 and 160 years history respectively . Lunch at a tasteful French restaurant for only 2000 yen . Really layback with no hordes of group tours overwhelming many of these places or the over proliferation of tourist trap shops

Japanese restaurant
Japanese regional restaurant
百穂苑 is a unique restaurant located in Kakunodate, Akita, known for its vegan and vegetarian cuisine. The establishment is owned and operated by a Persian woman and her Japanese husband who serves as the chef. Housed in a beautifully maintained traditional Japanese building, the restaurant also features an upstairs museum showcasing historical artifacts. Visitors can enjoy not only delicious food but also excellent service from the friendly owner.
We went on an adventure on our favourite train in Akita last week and our destination was a restaurant in Kakunodate that we have been wanting to check out for a while. The draw for us was that they advertise vegan/vegetarian cuisine. Not that we are non-meat eaters, but we do support plant based options for health and also are interested in finding places that offer these options for our tour groups. We are quite surprised to find ourselves in a 400 year old building owned by a family with Iranian/Japanese roots that is part restaurant featuring traditional local Akita cuisine and part art museum featuring Iranian and Japanese pieces. It is probably the most beautiful restaurant I have ever been inside of and the menu offers both plant based and non-plant based options. Everything looked so good that I went with the tapa set course that offered a taste of almost everything on their menu. The food was delicious! A lot of pickled dishes as pickled foods are very popular in Akita as well as wild vegetables and fish. Everything has a bit of a sweet flavour to it and the presentation was, as expected in fine Japanese cuisine, beautiful. After ordering, we were invited to tour the building and enjoy the art. A mix of Japanese and Iranian art pieces that we were told had been collected by the grandfather of the lovely gentlemen serving us. We spent about 15 or 20 minutes touring the various rooms which was almost perfect timing for our food to arrive at the table. The staff all appeared to be from the family that owns the business and they were extremely friendly, engaging and spoke both Japanese and English. They took time to explain the history of the building as well as answered our questions about their family. Their is adequate seating for large groups and the menu is in both English and Japanese text so we will definitely be adding this place to our tour itineraries. Who wants to come and experience this amazing place with us?
Cory C — Google review
A rather unusual place, mixing Japanese, Persian and Tawainese cultures. I guess good and bad tastes are all a matter of points of view. The fish soup in the shell was the best.
Arnaud D — Google review
Wow. Unexpected find, a 400 year old restaurant serving excellent food with a vegan option. Best food since arriving in Japan 10 days ago. I would highly recommend it as the displayed artefacts are beautiful.
Beverly G — Google review
The hostess was very friendly and the house/museum was beautiful. We enjoyed the art and decorations. We went because the signs were very prominent in English about being "vegan". Upon arriving we find there is only one dish that is, and there is no English menu. Not normally an issue, but the signs hinted that there might be? We ordered the vegan meal, and found chicken in one of the side dishes. The noodles (while the broth and presentation were great!) were a bit overcooked. It also seemed pricy, but I don't know if maybe it is standard in this town. I would recommend stopping by for the charm, but don't expect anything vegan.

Owned and run by a Persian lady and her Japanese husband (chef). This is a jewel in kakunodate. A beautifully maintained (/restored) traditional Japanese house with upstairs museum and historical artefacts.

(Translated by Google) We stopped in for lunch, and it turns out there are a lot of artworks. Diners can tour the museum for free (it costs 1,000 yen if you just want to tour). When we talked, we learned that what we thought was a Western painting was actually a Persian carpet. When we got closer, we could see that it was indeed a great piece of craftsmanship! We toured the first and second floors, and the last one at the back was... also very beautiful. Thank you so much for showing us so many rare and wonderful things. Kata Branch School (Omoide no Katabunko) is a well-preserved wooden school building that has been opened to the public. Despite its modest size, the classrooms, staff rooms, gymnasium, and toilets are all in good condition. Visitors can immerse themselves in nostalgia as they imagine what it was like to study at the old wooden desks. The facility offers a serene environment where visitors can enjoy activities such as playing the piano or ping-pong.
We visited Omoide no Katabunko, which once served as a primary school for local children and is now open for community use. It was well-maintained, preserving its charm and history. The ground floor features a hall, kitchen, toilets and basin, and teacher office. You can even play table tennis or stand on the stage. Upstairs, there are three classrooms. Sitting in the study chairs and looking out the windows brought back fun childhood memories. It was a unique experience to imagine how young children once spent their time in this school. A truly memorable place that offers a heartfelt flashback to the past.

I drove there on one road that looks deserted. It was pretty eerie.. and I thought what the hay.. that why it was abandoned… I can feel the students would have a hard time coming to the school in the old days. I think we were the first group visiting for a day. The building is in a very good shape. There was an old guy taking care of the building. When we drove out of the place we chose a different path.. now we understand why this used to be a community school. It is closed to all the residential area (only that next to it, a thick forest with small road covered with leaves, that I drove passed)

though a little out of the way, it was 100% worth the visit! this was definitely the highlight of my visit to Lake Tazawa. the school looked beautiful amidst the autumn leaves, and as someone who grew up in a city, it was so interesting to explore and imagine growing up and attending school in a completely different environment. my highlight was definitely the school gym where we could play freely with the various sports equipment. please come here!

The feeling of old books and pianos filled my mind. The school had a working piano in the hall and lots and lots of chairs. There’s a second floor, with pictures and writing of old students.

This spot amazed me! Felt like I had travelled back time! Everything was being maintained nicely. I’d recommend to anyone who likes places and things with stories. I read another review here saying the classroom had been rearranged so nothing left to see, so I did hesitate to come , but lucky I still came and found out it was as amazing as the photos show.

I'm happy they managed to preserved and keep this old school intact for visiting and the community. Go back in time, let your imagination take over. Enjoy the quiet, play the piano or ping-pong! When we entered we got a combo ticket deal, for here and the Lake Tazawa Kunimasu Trout Museum. That was more interesting that we thought and spent a good amount of time at each.

During late summer, traversing the dense vegetation resembling "jungles" proved challenging but worth it to reach Amida Pond. This captivating spot offers spectacular views of Tazawa Lake in pleasant weather conditions. However, caution is advised for novice hikers as navigating the 1km-ridge encircling the pond can be perilous due to its narrow width of approximately 50cm and precipitous cliffs on both sides with near-vertical angles of nearly 80 degrees.
In late summer, it was tough to pass through "jungles" to get the pond, but it deserved. You can find this place in good weather for additional view of Tazawa lake too. I do not recommend for the entry-level hikers to hike along the 1km-ridge wrapping the pond, since the both sides are too narrow - just as 50cm width & both left and right sides are steep cliffs -, and angles to the cliffs feel almost 80 degrees.

(Translated by Google) It's a famous mountain for alpine plants, so I've climbed it twice in July so far, but the autumn leaves this time were also spectacular. The best time to see the flowers in 2019 was a few days earlier than normal. The leaves on the grass around Joudodaira and Moomin Valley (Baba no Koji) around Amida Pond turn earlier than the leaves in the forest, so the area around Amida Pond was already the color of dead grass, but the brocades on the slopes of Mt. Meng and Mt. Mt. Yokodake were just at their peak. did. We recommend going around the trail from the 8th station trailhead via the Rhododendron course via Yakemori and Oyakesuna, and the general Katakura course. The standard course time is approximately 4 hours to Amida Pond, which eliminates the round trip time for climbing Mt. The course leading to Mt. Yokodake, which runs along the ridgeline from the saddle of Mt. Meng and Dake, is difficult for those with little mountain climbing experience. There is a sloping rocky area where you may have to climb up and down the Yase ridge, which is a place where people may fall. Even if it is a long detour, it is safer to go around Oyakisuna. The old road course from the lower wooden path behind the Amida Pond Hut via the former sulfur mine ruins was abandoned due to collapse, and there was a sign saying the road was closed. Mount Akita-Komagatake is a picturesque 1,637-meter stratovolcano located in Towada Hachimantai National Park. It is the highest mountain in Akita prefecture and offers a moderate hiking trail that starts at the 8th station of the trailhead. The route passes through Amidaike Pond, Mt. Otokodake, Mt. Yokodake, and Yakinomori before returning to the 8th station.
Not too difficult hiking trails. Spectacular view.

🏔️ Mt. Akita-Komagatake — A Paradise of Alpine Flowers 🌸✨ From the lovely Hakusan Rhododendrons and Komakusa to the golden Nikkōkisekis (Daylilies), this flower-filled mountain trail took my breath away! The trek was smooth, refreshing, and surrounded by stunning mountain views and colorful blooms 🌿🌼 Highly recommended for nature lovers and hiking fans alike 💛🥾 📍Best flower spots: Moomin Valley, Ooniyari-zuna (Komakusa), Amida Pond 🌸 Peak bloom: June–August

(Translated by Google) I visited on September 28, 2025. I took the New Trail course from Amida Pond to Mt. Otokodake and back. The one-way route is 3km and takes just under an hour. The overall climb is gentle and easy. There is a slight incline from the pond to Mt. Otokodake. Lake Tazawa is visible from the New Trail route, and the views are spectacular as you circle around Mt. Otokodake. The autumn foliage was beautiful. Enkianthus japonica was the main focus. The vegetation was similar to that of Mt. Kurikoma, and the scenery felt similar. After a short walk, Amida Pond and the grasslands spread out, which was quite nice. The view from the summit was also excellent (you can see Mt. Chokai and other sights). It's geared toward beginners, so it may be a little disappointing for those with good stamina, but the views make up for it. Known as the Mountain of Flowers, the clusters of Aleutianthus avens in June near Moomin Valley are definitely worth seeing. On weekends and holidays, buses run from Alpa Komakusa to the 8th station.

(Translated by Google) On October 15th, I visited Akita-Komagatake for the first time. I wanted to climb while basking in the morning sun, so I walked clockwise from the eighth station parking lot, going to the Yakomori Branch, Yokodake, Onna-dake, and Katakura-dake Observation Deck in that order. On the way up, I was able to talk to locals, who told me the locations of Mount Moriyoshi, Mount Iwate, Mount Nyuto, Mount Hayachine, and Mount Chokai, and I was thrilled to be able to see them in person. While looking toward Moomin Valley, I also heard stories about the active volcanic crater from over 50 years ago. We gave up on Moomin Valley due to lack of stamina, but the view from the ridge on the way from Yokodake to Amidaike Pond was great, with clear views of Mount Kodake, Mount Onna-dake, and Lake Tazawa. On the way back, I was also able to see a side of Hachimantai for the first time thanks to some locals near Katakura Observation Deck. I also learned that Mount Iwaki can be seen in the distance. From Katakura Observation Deck, the mountainside was beautifully colored, like a patchwork. The course time on Yamappu is about 3 hours, but we started around 7:30am, took leisurely breaks here and there, and descended around 12pm. Next time, I'd like to go to Moomin Valley during the Aleutian flower season.

Kyukamura Nyuto Onsenkyo is a part of the National Park Resort Chain and stands out as the only Western-style hotel in Nyuto Onsen. While it may not have the same level of seclusion as other ryokans in the area, it offers modern facilities and excellent service suitable for families and elderly guests. The camping ground provides a serene environment, especially on weekdays with fewer campers, allowing visitors to enjoy hidden hot springs and beautiful autumn foliage.

(Translated by Google) I stayed at Rinkan Auto Site for several nights. The site number within the Rinkan Auto Site will not be specified at the reception. All you have to do is set up your place where you like and hang a red tag indicating that it has been accepted. Firewood is available for sale at the campsite reception. It looks like coniferous wood scraps (probably), so if you want to use hardwood in your car, it would be a good idea to have one on hand. However, there are a lot of fallen trees, and people who use nature stoves should be able to make a bonfire by purchasing locally. There were quite a lot of trees at the forest road auto site, so it didn't seem necessary to use a tarp for shade. There are many trees and I think it is possible to sleep in a hammock. There was a river flowing below the cliff, so I could hear the sound of the river all the time. There are flush toilets and showers in the sanitary building on the auto site side, but since this is a campsite in a hot spring village, it would be better to go to the hot springs. I took a bath in Tsuru no Yu. The forest road auto site is mainly made of dirt. A 24cm peg would have stuck my foot. au can barely pick up weak radio waves, and depending on the location, it may be outside the prefecture. The sanitary building has electricity, but there are basically no street lights inside the site, so it's very dark, which is a wonderful environment for me. However, there are many trees, so it may not be suitable for enjoying the starry sky. I can hear the sounds of wild animals, so I think it's necessary to take precautions. The highland forest site in the hot spring village is about 3 degrees cooler than the Tazawako Station area, making it easier to spend time there. It is very useful for camping tours by motorcycle because you can throw away garbage in the sanitary etc. By the way, the power source site has a lawn with few trees and I think you can enjoy the starry sky. It's been in its current location since the Kyoho era, and thanks to the introduction of a wooden roof around 1897, it survived the subsequent fires and has retained its traditional appearance to this day. It was also used as a filming location for the movie "The Twilight Samurai." It's been preserved as a typical layout for a middle-ranking samurai in Kakunodate, and it was clear that it was different in size and layout from the mansion we'd toured earlier. We weren't allowed inside, so we had to view it from all around the perimeter. Inside, there was a guard-like figure sitting and working, so I was a little surprised when someone suddenly appeared. I thought the location needed to be a little more thoughtful, as it could have been awkward for both visitors and those inside. A bucket-style well has also been preserved in the garden, which remains intact. Japanese restaurant
Sakura no Sato is a traditional timber-framed restaurant that offers a variety of Japanese dishes such as rice bowls, Hinai chicken specialties, udon noodle soups, and yakitori (BBQ chicken). The Mother and Child rice bowl is their specialty dish, but the cold dipping udon is also highly recommended for its delicious flavor and smooth texture. Despite the tight seating area, this family-style restaurant provides a pleasant dining experience with an English menu available.
We enjoyed the chicken skewers the most. We both got a chicken rice and Udon set. My wife preferred the traditional dipping sauce, but I preferred the sesame dipping sauce. The Udon was perfect for a hot September day and the pickles which accompany the rice work well. You are welcomed with a cup of tea and can help yourself to water. We couldn't find any tissues or napkins, but there were some wet toilettes around. The sake set was good value. Worth eating at.

This tiny restaurant always has a line when we walked by the last couple of days. We're decided to queue up today and waited for 30+ minutes before we got seated. There are only 8 tables, 2 on the tatami floor and 6 regular. The tea is self serve, the staff will only bring you the first cup. The Inaniwa Mushroom udon is amazing, the broth, the thin udon (Akita's specialty) and the fresh mushroom. I'm not a huge fan of udon, but this is perfection IMHO. We also ordered the Oyakodon, which is Hinai chicken & egg don (Hinai chicken is another specialty of the area). This might be the best chicken don we've ever tasted. The chicken is tender without the 'steam chicken' smell. The misotanpo, which is also a unique grilled rice cylinder coated by sweet miso paste is incredible. We also ordered the minced pork cutlet which is also yummy.

We missed a small line after walking past to get pudding elsewhere, and got a seat immediately. The food was so good — the piping hot soups, silky smooth udon, and absolutely delicious chicken egg rice. We wish we could go back for more.

We know this restaurant is a viral one so we arrived 15 minutes before the opening hours and there was already people queuing up there but we were happy still be able to arranged a table in the first round of customer. We tasted the egg and chicken rice with udon meal set plus the chicken skewers set. All are delicious. Considered to order more dishes to try the other taste but we were full already.

Possibly the best cold udon I had for a long time. The chicken don is the main selling point, but the udon still beats it. Nice little family style restaurant. You may find many other foreigners like yourself dining at this location. English menu is available.

Udon noodle restaurant
Kosendo is a charming spot that specializes in serving the renowned Inaniwa Udon, one of Japan's most famous udon noodles. Originating from Inaniwa-cho, Yuzawa City, Akita in 1665, this specialty udon was once considered a luxurious delicacy. The texture of the Inaniwa Udon is distinctively flat and thin, offering a silky smooth and soft consistency compared to traditional udon noodles.
Quaint but popular stall selling inaniwa udon. Get the cold udon if you prefer a more "al dente" taste to your noodles. Cold or hot, the rich broth is a great accompaniment to the udon.

Chicken Tempura Inaniwa Udon + Hindi Chicken and Maitake Mushrooms with Ramen Egg don + Kakunodate Beer (Yellow: Weeping Cherry Tree Beer. Green: Bukeyashiki Beer). Tried the specialty of Akita here, the Inaniwa Udon, which is counted as one of the three major udon noodles in Japan. The history of this udon is said to start in 1665 in Inaniwa-cho, Yuzawa City, Akita. This specialty udon was a very luxurious product in the past which ordinary people could not easily get access to. A similar thinner version called Somen using the same ingredients is also available. The chicken tempura is also a local specialty here in Akita. The light batter and juicy chicken (breast) meat won us over when paired with the light cold udon. The don was decent but the Inaniwa udon and tempura chicken are the ones you should just focus on over here.

You’ll like this place if you’re a udon lover, it specialises in inaniwa udon noodle, one of the most well known udon noodles in Japan, the noodle is relatively flat, thin and less chewy comparing with the typical fat round chewy udon you normally find elsewhere, but the texture is silky smooth, soft and very delicious, and you can get it with a whole variety of different toppings with the same delicious soup.

Owner shared that the place used to be a temple. It had a very zen feel to the place even when it was full. Could feel the amount of effort put into preparing each portion so it took quite a bit of time. We queued for at least 20 minutes and waited about 20 minutes. It was worth the wait and staff were quick to act once they could. I had the cold udon and the broth was absolutely deep and rich. Even though I was full, I just had wanted to lick up every bit of the soup. The noodles in the cold version was more al dente than the one in the warm broth. There was also an ASMR party when we bit into the tempura, all which was in the fried perfectly. The chicken was also perfectly seasoned.

This place hits all the marks! Delicious udon and tempura in a charming old building. The perfect spot for lunch.

This traditionally Japanese restaurant built in the middle of the samurai village was the cherry on top of our visit there. The design inside is gorgeous reminding of the whole historic vibe and the food is incredibly delicious and cheap (they have a English menu too). Might get very crowded on Sakura season so avoid going there at rush hours on those days especially on weekends.

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Shop Aji-Q is a delightful spot that captures the essence of comfort food, especially during the bustling fall foliage season. On a recent Saturday visit, I noticed families flocking to this inviting eatery. I opted for their green onion miso ramen and gyoza set—simple yet satisfying dishes that are perfect for casual dining. The Tazawako location stands out with its pristine interior and attentive service, making it an enjoyable experience overall.

Order vegetable miso ramen 🍜 with backfat topping and garlic on a separate plate 🎵 This is a popular restaurant where customers keep coming and going even after ordering. The ramen 🍜 has a large amount of noodles, and even with the backfat, it's light and has a healthy flavor with the sweetness of the vegetables 🎵Next time, I'd like to try Jiro-style ramen. (Translated by Google) Ajikyu is famous for its unmistakable taste. The Tazawako store has a particularly clean interior and the customer service is courteous. I had the rich tonkotsu ramen and the spicy miso ramen. Personally, I don't mind the tonkotsu ramen being more porky, but since the inside of the restaurant smells like tonkotsu, it might be difficult to do so unless you're at a tonkotsu ramen specialty restaurant. However, although the back fat gives it a rich flavor, it is not bitter and refreshing, making it easy to eat. The chashu is also soft and delicious. The spicy miso ramen was just the right amount of spiciness for me, who doesn't like spiciness at all. There are plenty of ingredients and it's satisfying to eat. Both the soup and noodles are delicious, and you can't go wrong with Ajikyu. (Translated by Google) Visited on a Saturday before 2pm. There were quite a lot of customers, probably because it was the fall foliage season, and I got the impression that there were a lot of families. This time I ordered green onion miso ramen for 850 yen and gyoza set for 390 yen. There's nothing special about either the ramen or the gyoza set, but on the other hand, it's easy to eat and it's no wonder that so many families visit here. Personally, it's important for chains like this that there is no downturn, so I'm impressed that the taste is stable. Moreover, it seems to be only available on weekdays, but I was curious to see that they have an original Jiro-style menu. The customer service is frank in a good way, and the atmosphere is such that you can casually enjoy your meal. Next time I would like to visit on a weekday and try the menu mentioned above. Shinto shrine
Shinmeisha Shrine is a historical site with roots dating back to the Momoyama period when the Tozawa clan, who ruled Kakunodate Castle, built a shrine on Kojoyama. Later, in 1656 during the Edo period, it was relocated to its present location by the Satakekita family. The shrine has been an integral part of local culture since 1676 when lion dances started being performed throughout the town.

The Matsumoto-ke Samurai House is a fascinating glimpse into the housing of "lower samurai" during the Edo period. The main building features a thatched roof and a stone roof covered with cedar bark, resembling a farmhouse. Nearby, visitors can also explore the Ishiguro family residence, showcasing the contrast in social status within a small area. The well-shaped frame behind the house is popular among samurai as it symbolizes moving forward without retreating.

Katakuri, also known as the Dogtooth Violet Colony, is a must-visit destination in Japan during mid-April to the end of April. The Katakuri Museum offers tickets for 300 yen, allowing visitors to drive around the colony and explore various areas at their best. On weekends, tickets can be obtained on the way to the colony without prior purchase. The area features several colonies spread across a large area with narrow roads suitable for walking and hiking.

(Translated by Google) Katakuri flowers only bloom for about 10 days. April 22, 2022 was the peak of the season. Of the four clusters, the highest one is still in bloom, but the others are in full bloom. I felt that the lavender-colored katakuri flowers resembled the rakkyo flowers that bloom in the Tottori Sand Dunes. Wik-sensei wrote that chestnuts and katakuri go well together. If you ask me locally... Once the flowers have finished blooming, they are harvested by hand, without the use of machines. Since it's a bulb, it seems like a machine won't do it. Katakuri powder is not produced and is cultivated for tourism purposes. The bulbs are said to be located about 30 cm deep. It takes eight years for the flowers to bloom, and once they bloom, they bloom every year. Each chestnut farmer will tell you a lot of things if you talk to them at Kuriyama where they live. One person I spoke to told me that 500 chestnut trees produce a harvest of about 4 tons. When I asked them how to buy it, they decided to send me instructions. I'm looking forward to it. Both are served in large portions and are cheap! It's a popular restaurant, so it gets crowded. It was a great option as I could compare it with Aizu's native variety. Takamine Ruby is an extremely rare variety that blooms red, like ruby. Both have a strong texture and are the type of soba I like. Comparing the two types is purely my personal opinion, but while Takamine Ruby has a clean and light taste, the Aizu native variety had a stronger buckwheat aroma and a deeper flavor. As someone who rarely has the opportunity to eat soba in Akita, it was a very valuable experience. And my journey of discovering soba continues. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) I had the famous ayu tempura soba. Although it's expensive, the sweetfish tempura marinated in white soup stock is delicious as is. Greenish, smooth soba noodles. I also want to try Inaka Soba, which is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a parking lot next to the store. There is one-way traffic in front of the store. (Translated by Google) I visited again on August 17, 2023. It seems like the prices on the menu have increased due to high prices. This time too, we were treated to the famous Ayu tempura soba. It's delicious no matter when you come. I joined the store on September 13, 2020. It was around 1pm, but I was told that all the soba noodles were already sold out and that it would take about 30 minutes to get new ones. Last time I visited, it was delicious, so I decided to wait. Inside the store, I was able to watch how buckwheat flour is made. It was a masterpiece of craftsmanship. I learned that it is a store owned by the Daruma clan. This soba restaurant is famous for its sweetfish tempura. Without hesitation, I ordered the ayu tempura soba. The sweetfish tempura, where you could eat the whole head, was crispy and fluffy. The ultra-thin soba noodles mixed with the soup were also exquisite.

(Translated by Google) Kakunodate-cho, Semboku City is one of the soba restaurants in southern Akita Prefecture. It is one of the most popular stores among them. Order ``Mori Soba''. The hand-made noodles are a little flat, and unlike other soba noodles, you can enjoy an interesting texture. The firmness/body is softer than Nishiba Onnai soba and firmer than Inaka soba, so it's right in the middle. The soup stock is a little sweet, but still has a refreshing aftertaste. It was a well-balanced dish that was clearly popular (^ ^) (Original)

Please note that there is one-way traffic in front of the store. This is where you enter ``Machi no Ekitatemachi'' in the direction of Ando Miso Soy Sauce Brewery. Zaru soba was 800 yen. Soba noodle shop
Nestled in the heart of Japan, Sobadokoro Sugaya is a must-visit for soba and udon enthusiasts. The restaurant boasts thick, green-hued soba noodles that are freshly made, providing a satisfying bite with every slurp. Their curry meat soba stands out with its well-seasoned flavor and perfect balance of ingredients, making it one of the best options on the menu.
Excellent is udon/soba shop, with cozy interior and friendly chef and staff.

Date of enjoyment: 15/4/25 Drove all the way from Morioka to this restaurant on a Tuesday, made it just before last order at 230pm. They specialise in both udon and soba, not sure how I got onto this restaurant but I m glad I came here and so did the family. I ordered daily limited set of both udon and soba, tempura udon set and udon with soup. I thought I had the best udon in Udon Shin, this place took me to a new level, their texture and sweetness of the udon and chewy along with the dipping broth is truly amazing. The broth is made from thick dashi soy and it was very light but packed full of umami. I can’t describe how well controlled and balanced the combination of udon and soba with the dipping broth it is. I wished I could have stomach more food it’s this good. Tempura is light and crunch, their side dishes are also very much home made and the tofu is made from sesame which is a delight. Everything is made to order and we were the only ones of what looks like a father son duo in the kitchen. The decor is very much 1980s Japanese as if it was a time capsuled like nothing has changed. They also have a 2 person banquet of udon and soba but requires reservation. If you are in the area this is a must! You must travel for great food!

(Translated by Google) I ordered curry meat soba, juwari soba, and kakiage. The slightly bubbly texture of the curry makes it more delicious. When I actually ate it, the curry wasn't very strong, but it was well-seasoned, and it was one of the best curry soba noodles I've ever had. The balance with meat is also great. Juwari soba has a firm texture and is satisfying to eat. Deliciousness where you can enjoy the aroma of soba noodles The soba tofu that comes with the dish is also rich in aroma and has a gentle taste that makes you want to come and eat it alone. The pickles are probably homemade and are refreshing radish pickles. It doesn't even taste like additives, so it's all perfect 💯. It was delicious. I think it's hard to come here because it's a remote place. This is a store I would definitely like to visit again.

(Translated by Google) The soba noodles are thick and have a green tinge to them, perhaps because they are new soba noodles. It's satisfying to eat. It seems that the soup is inferior to the soba. Curry udon and kakiage are also very delicious. I think I'll try regular kakiage udon next time. I think warm soba is also delicious. It comes with a fried egg and sesame tofu, and the service is perfect.

(Translated by Google) Tempura Juwari Soba (100% buckwheat flour) - 1,200 yen This dish includes fragrant, chewy, home-grown 100% buckwheat soba noodles, a variety of irresistibly crispy tempura, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), buckwheat tofu, and pickles - all for an amazing price! This offering would cost 1,500-2,000 yen elsewhere. The soba noodles are perfectly cooked and firm, and the flavorful shrimp tempura has an excellent texture, allowing you to enjoy the taste of real shrimp that hasn't been pounded or stretched. The Japanese-style interior also has a pleasant atmosphere, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal. It's in a place that makes you wonder if there's a soba restaurant in a place like this, but the food is undeniable.

The soba choko and other bowls are made of local Shiraiwa ware and are of good quality. I didn't ask for it, but the table next to me had fried mochi? I was asking for it. Looks like there's ohagi too.
