Michinoeki Lake Utonai is a picturesque rest stop located on a toll road. Accessible only by car, it offers ample parking for visitors. The site features numerous amenities such as shops, a noodle bar, and an observation deck that provides stunning views of migratory birds. In addition to the observation tower, there is also a bird education center and forest walkway nearby.
Beautiful place and can relax with nature. And you can visit Bird museum. If you interest the birds, you can find a lot of bird.

A nice place to stop by for meals, ice-cream and souvenir. Got a small kids corner too. Had a relaxing time there, seats facing lake with swans.
C K — Google review
It's a nice place to stop for a refreshment with a small lake that you can walk up to, and also a bird sanctuary or museum - wasn't sure. They have an observatory you could go up in order to get a better view of the lake. I wouldn't go out of my way just to visit it though.
Matan K — Google review
Lake Utonai Roadside Station is conviniently located along Route 36. It's a perfect rest area for those driving to or from Tomakomai City. Aside from the clean toilets the roadside station also has a souvenir shop and restaurants. If you're collecting roadside station stamps, then you should come when the roadside station is open. You won't be able to stamp when it's closed as the stamp is located near the souvenir shop.
Neil A — Google review
Road station with all the usual facilities plus a look out tower overlooking Utonai Lake and perfect for observing planes landing at Chitose airport.

Food variety is not that sparse, but there’s a lot of places to chill and do something. The children section kind of makes the entire indoor area loud, but you can still chillax. There are a variety of souvenirs you can get, from frozen food to key chains, plushies, bags, wallets, etc. overall a mediocre place.
Marta — Google review
Great scenery and atmosphere. You can only go there by car. There are many car park for everyone. You can walk to the pond or go up to viewing tower to see all the pond view. You can walk to bird education center next to the pond and can walk in the walk way in forest too.

Great unobstructed view of Lake Utonai. There is a cafe for you to get your quick food fix and local specialties as well. A great pit stop as expected of Hokkaido.

This place was the perfect spot to spend some time before boarding the ferry back to the main island. The playground equipment and roller slide are super fun! Mats are provided!! The grounds are well kept. You could easily spend the entire day here canoeing, picnicking, hiking trails, etc.

Scenic spot
Kirakira Park is a spacious seaside park with an amphitheater that offers stunning views of passing ships and the city at night. It is located next to Tomakomai Port, where visitors can witness various huge trading ships up close depending on the time. The park features playsets such as slides and Tarzan ropes, although they are relatively small considering the size of the park. Nonetheless, it still provides ample space for kids to play during summer in its water area.
Beautiful place and can feel the sea breeze.
Thet W — Google review
Passed by here while heading up to the airport. Free parking and toilet available. The view was quite cool but the park itself was rather underwhelming. There are a few facilities aimed for kids and a large open space, and that's about it. Maybe it would be more busy during festivals? Saw a Japanese Coast Guard ship passing by when I was here.

Discover the wonders of science at the Tomakomai City Technology Center, a delightful hands-on museum that caters to curious minds of all ages. This engaging center features a variety of interactive exhibits covering topics like physics, chemistry, and astronomy. A standout attraction is the planetarium, which offers an enchanting journey through the cosmos. Visitors can step inside a replica of the Mir Space Station and enjoy guided tours from friendly staff who are eager to share their knowledge.
The museum is quite old, but to be able to get close up to something as historic as the backup Mir was fantastic. The staff were very helpful and informative.

The Tomakomai City Technology Center, also known as the Tomakomai City Science Center, is a hands-on science museum located in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Established in 1970 to inspire a passion for science among youth, the center has grown into a comprehensive facility featuring interactive exhibits on various scientific principles. A highlight of the center is the Mir Exhibition Hall, which houses a genuine backup module of the Soviet Union’s Mir space station, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the history of space exploration. In addition to the Mir exhibit, the center includes a planetarium with captivating shows about the cosmos. Visitors can also explore displays related to physics, chemistry, and aviation, making it an engaging destination for science enthusiasts of all ages. The center gained extra attention as a filming location for the anime and live-action series Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi), and a bear statue from the series, once displayed at the center, was later donated to the Tomakomai City Art Museum due to its popularity. The center is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday) and during the year-end and New Year holidays (December 29–January 3). Admission and parking are free. It is located about a 20-minute walk from JR Tomakomai Station. Whether you are a local resident or a visitor, the Tomakomai City Technology Center offers an educational and enjoyable experience for all ages.

For a science center in such a small local town, there were many things to see and I felt well-managed & preserved. Also, the planetarium which we were lucky to be able to watch on time was interesting. I would like to thank all the people involved for readily accepting such a sudden request.

I had a beautiful experience entering the Mir Space station, and the down to earth personnel there guided me through everything and even clicked the shutter for me. There are many innovative scientific experiments and exchanging these ideas with other countries will improve the quality of education for the students. I was mesmerized to know that learning can be made this much fascinating, that me as tourist enjoyed taking time learning each of the experiments. Will definitely visit the next time I visit Japan from India

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Kaitenmaru, located in Tomakomai along Hokkaido Road 259 Kamiatsuma-Tomakomai Line, is a renowned conveyor belt sushi restaurant. The waiting area has a lively atmosphere, indicating the popularity of the place. Although there might be a short wait to enter, the overall quality and taste make it worth it. The touch panel allows customers to conveniently place their orders, which are then handed over by skilled craftsmen.

(Translated by Google) I've been to quite a few conveyor-belt sushi restaurants in Hokkaido, but this is by far the best. They offer a solid selection of local ingredients and the recommended items are always great. The atmosphere is local and relaxed, and the chefs are incredibly attentive, which is rare for a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant. The menu names are playful, the service is extensive, and ferry passengers receive a 5% discount. I'm always delighted by the dignified hospitality.

(Translated by Google) Kaitenmaru (Conveyor Belt Sushi) — A casual place for the whole family to enjoy local ingredients. We stopped off here in between sightseeing. The response time for orders was quick, and the booth seats made it easy to eat with children. The blue fish and shellfish were fresh, and the rice was light and easy to eat. The side of potato mochi with butter was better than we expected, making it the perfect palate cleanser. While the price isn't the cheapest, it's reasonable considering the content. Some dishes are hit or miss, but overall the satisfaction level is high. We recommend enjoying the seasonal ingredients together with the sides.

(Translated by Google) The quality of the ingredients was so good that it was hard to believe it was a chain restaurant. The fatty tuna was sweet, the boiled surf clams were light and fluffy, and the whelks were crunchy. I ended up ordering more of each. (The surf clams were out of stock, so I couldn't get a refill.) Salt goes better with it than soy sauce, and this conveyor-belt sushi restaurant lived up to its reputation.

Katsuya is a delightful destination for those craving delicious tonkatsu without breaking the bank. This chain restaurant has mastered the art of simplicity, offering a menu that includes various cutlet options like normal, loin, and fillet cutlets at surprisingly low prices. The service is straightforward yet friendly, making it easy to enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
Good katsu menu. Friendly service. The prices are already great to begin with, and a 100yen-off coupon always accompanies the receipt. 4-people tables or counter seats. Take-away is also available, though I've never used it myself.

(Translated by Google) Simple service and good food quality. I think the taste is very good considering the price. Normal cutlet, loin cutlet, fillet cutlet. Low price even if you order fillet cutlet! There are tonkatsu chain restaurants that have improved their service and quality, but Katsuya has lowered the hurdles to eating tonkatsu by elegantly simplifying their service and keeping prices low. I am grateful that I can easily enjoy tonkatsu. However, since it is a low-priced store, you can feel that the customer base is proportionate. Also, I was disappointed that the accompanying cabbage was very dry and dry. The same goes for the optional salad. However, even with that in mind, I think it's amazing that they are able to keep the price so low.

There were only two other customers in the restaurant, so it seemed like it was pretty quiet. On this day, I ordered the Katsu Curry (Bamboo) with extra rice for ¥1,221. The bowl arrived in about eight minutes. The curry and katsu were as delicious as always. It seems like it's possible to achieve the same level of deliciousness no matter where you eat, but it's actually quite difficult. At Ramen Restaurant Ninguru Futaba-ten, visitors can savor a delightful bowl of miso ramen that is both satisfying and refreshing. Despite the usual Sunday noon rush, the efficient service ensures that customers are seated promptly.
My refreshing miso ramen was just that :). The service was good. It was as busy as one would expect on Sunday at 12noon, but my friend and I waited a very short time to be seated.

Decided to check out this place because it's a stone's throw away from the laundromat (and I have about an hour to spare before collecting my laundry). Turns out that this is quite a local favourite, and there's a healthy stream of customers. What separates this ramen place from others in Tomakomai is that there's a variety of ramen to choose from - not only Japanese staples like miso and shoyu but also Chinese variations. The set meals are cheap but don't expect generous offerings of vegetables / garnishes. The soup base is slightly on the oily side for those more health-conscious but that hasn't stopped me from slurping up the soup... Tomakomai is not exactly known for sushi but its ramen here definitely rivals some of the best in Sapporo that I've tried.

(Translated by Google) Curious about the Tomakomai ramen that @k.k.priest, who has conquered every roadside station in Hokkaido, had tried, I headed to Ramen Restaurant Ningle Futaba. According to k.k.priest, it's "the flavor of a working man." The menu even specifically describes the Northern Country soy sauce and miso as "strong-flavored." I ordered the Northern Country soy sauce fried rice ramen set for ¥1,250. It was 3:30 p.m., so I thought it might be empty, but the restaurant was super crowded due to Obon. The raised area, which has quite a lot of seating, and the tables were all full, with only the counter open. The bowl arrived. The garlic aroma was incredible. I took a sip of the soup... This has got to be a crazy seasoning. The moment I gave up on finishing it, I took my first sip. Slurping the medium-thick noodles, the full-bodied garlic flavor and the rich, rich soy sauce soup mixed together was amazing. Every bite was rich and satisfying... The color was so deep, it felt like swallowing a black hole. And the soup never cooled down. It's rare to find ramen that's this memorable. The fried rice was simple yet delicious, with the kind of local Chinese food that's just right. Looking around, everyone around me was ordering the fried rice set... It was amazing. Thank you for the meal.

I was impressed that the bean sprouts tasted even better when I ate it for the first time in a while. I don't know how many years ago it changed, but maybe the cooking method has changed? It seems to mix better with the noodles and soup than before, and it's easier to get used to. Thanks to that, I get 100 out of 100👍 And this time I tried topping it with green onions for the first time, and it was a great choice. I think I'll continue to use it this way. Steak house
Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant is a must-visit for wagyu enthusiasts. Located near the airport, this restaurant exclusively serves premium cuts of wagyu beef, as well as chicken and pork. The unseasoned meats require some grilling expertise to bring out their full flavor. Visitors rave about the phenomenal food, top-notch service, and peaceful ambiance. While slightly off the beaten path, the quiet atmosphere adds to the dining experience.
When you walk in, the vibe is great! The steak is huge and melt in the mouth! The bread is nicely baked to the crisp. I was here in Oct 2018 and back again in May 2025. It has maintained the standard! I will be back again when I am here again next trip :)

Lovely beef BBQ with a simple English menu. They use high quality coals. Service also good. Ventilation and such aren't working well Unsure on what kinds of beef it is but its quality is nice. It isn't cheap by Japanese standards but nicely located near airport.

Fantastic last meal before heading to chitose airport, great way to end our Hokkaido trip. Very memorable with spacious seating, hot charcoal grill that cooks the meat to perfection, and great desserts too. If u are near the airport, come here for bbq, definitely no regrets.

Amazing Wagyu steak house. We arrived late at night 7.30pm but the manager still allowed us in to make the last order. Ambience is superb and staff were helpful even though they didn’t speak any English. Very Good value for money considering what they served.

The best wagyu I have ever tasted in my entire life. Food was phenomenal, but the service and ambience were what made the entire experience. Cuts of meat were marbled perfection. The restaurant’s a little out of way though, but that’s also a good point because the quiet atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our meal in peace. This was my best meal in Hokkaido and it was worth every cent we spent on it. I will definitely go out of the way to visit again if I were to return to Hokkaido.

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Lake Shikotsuko Visitor Center, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Nishiki Ōnuma Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 9 hours of non-stop fun.

Once a year then Hokkaido Ice Art Festival will be held here and it is definitely worth getting here for this... Worth spending half a day here and enjoy beautiful ice art, have a coffee in the snow and have some roasted mushmellows. Nearby there's also a snack shop with nice croquettes and noodles if you're hungry. The lake and the mountain backdrop makes a nice picture before you go! Totally love it!

The Lake Shikotsuko Visitor Center in Chitose is an excellent starting point for exploring the stunning caldera lake and its surroundings. Located in an eco-friendly building powered by solar panels and geothermal heating, the center offers free admission and operates daily, with seasonal closures during some winter Tuesdays. Inside, visitors can enjoy exhibits on the lake's flora, fauna, volcanic origins, and ecology, including taxidermied animals, an aquarium featuring kokanee salmon, interactive displays, and a 15-minute multilingual film showcasing the beauty of Lake Shikotsu through the seasons. Since 2020, the center has introduced VR goggles, allowing guests to explore off-limits areas such as moss caves and underwater scenes virtually. Seasonal activities like birdwatching, guided hikes, and snowshoe walks are also organized, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts. The center provides useful amenities, including free Wi-Fi, walking maps, wheelchair access, and a cozy lounge with views of the lake. Open from April to November between 9:00 and 17:30, and from December to March between 9:30 and 16:30, it is accessible by bus from Chitose Station or New Chitose Airport, with parking available seasonally. Whether you're here for the scenery, activities, or learning about the lake’s natural history, the Lake Shikotsuko Visitor Center is a must-visit destination.

Lake Shikotsu, located in a volcanic crater, is renowned for its remarkable depth and crystal-clear waters. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as boating, fishing, and sightseeing around the lake. The area also offers a diverse itinerary including stops at Nakayama Pass Rest, Silo Observatory, Lake Toya Onsen Town for lunch and sightseeing, Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, Noboribetsu Jigokudani, and Mitsui Outlet Park.
The combination of sunset and winter makes Lake Shikotsu truly breathtaking. The stunning views and serene atmosphere create a magical experience. Plus, there's an ice festival by the lake, offering beautiful ice sculptures and a unique winter charm for ¥1,000 per adult.

I've been here multiple times and it's always beautiful. You can walk, use the sightseeing boat, swanboats, paddle boats etc. They all cost between 1000-2000 yen per 30mins to 1 hour. Perfect place to rest with family or even alone. Though make sure to bring CASH!! All the restaurant use cash expect for 1 or 2 store. There's an ATM on the map nearby but closes at 12pm. Also all the shops closes by 1600 and 1700

Lake Shikotsu, a stop between 2 cities! Driving from Sapporo to Noboribetsu isn’t that long, about an hour and a half, or so I thought! (Read the bottom part) so we decided to make a stopover at Lake Shitose! About half way between Sapporo & Noboribetsu. What an amazing destination & a total favourite with both locals & tourists alike! They have this humongous Tourist Information Center, a whole bunch of very popular restaurants, and an activity Center, can rent canoes and all kind of other lake related stuff! My lady wanted to do the “Swan Ride” on the lake, but unfortunately closed as the water was a tad choppy! A lovely park for a nice stroll and of course a promenade, to wander along! Enjoyable for a 90 minute layover so to speak! Certainly worth it! too #googlemaps! Please make sure you update your navigation, the road to get out from there, was closed adding another 60 minute driving! Although the scenery was lovely but still! 😡 #sapporo #Japantravels #MarketAdventures #gourmettravels #selfdrivingholidays #hokkaido #noboribetsu #sapporo #lakeshikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is truly a natural wonder. Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling forested mountains, the scenery feels both peaceful and vibrant. The lake itself is remarkably clean, with crystal-clear water that shimmers beautifully under the sunlight. There’s a refreshing moisture in the air that makes every breath feel crisp and pure, almost like nature’s own air spa. What makes Lake Shikotsu so amazing is its serene beauty combined with its untouched atmosphere. The calm surface of the water reflects the surrounding green hills, creating postcard-like views in every direction. Whether walking along the lakeside, taking a boat out, or simply sitting by the shore, it’s easy to feel relaxed and recharged here. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful natural spots—green, clean, and full of life. A perfect escape for anyone who loves pure nature and breathtaking landscapes.

Spectacular lake view surrounded by interesting volcanoes. I suggest coming in autumn when most of the leaves are yellow and red, which will enhance the experience. You can go stand up paddle boarding and pedal boating on the lakes. On a clear day, the reflections of the clouds and mountains in the water is incredible. When you take photos of the fish, the reflection makes it look like the fish are swimming in the clouds. Perfect for any occasion, this place is a must come.

This place was clod with strong gust of wind… it gives a vibe of winter wonderland. The shop closes early at 4pm so we weren’t able to have a snack. It was too bad that we missed the last day of ice festival, just 1 day before as well. Despite all of those, still nice to be here… this place is mesmerizing 🥰
SherryG — Google review
I visited Lake Shikotsu and it was a very nice experience overall. The lake is known for its beautifully clear water and stunning scenic views, and it definitely lived up to its reputation in that regard. The natural surroundings are peaceful and make for a relaxing atmosphere — great for taking a walk or just enjoying the scenery. There are a few things to see and do around the lake area — you can explore the walking paths, visit the small shops and cafés nearby, or take a sightseeing boat ride on the lake. The views of the mountains reflecting on the water are truly beautiful, especially on a clear day. That said, the area itself is relatively small, so depending on what you’re looking for, it may be more of a short visit than a full-day activity. It’s great if you want to appreciate nature and take some nice photos, but there aren’t a huge number of attractions or activities beyond the lake itself. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is worth a visit if you’re in the area and want to enjoy some beautiful natural scenery. It’s a nice, calm place to take a break from the city and soak in the views.

Mountains
Nestled within the stunning Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Mount Tarumae is an active lakeside volcano that beckons adventurers with its breathtaking vistas. Known as Tarumae-san in Ainu, meaning "high on the riverbank," this remarkable site features a unique lava dome and stands at an impressive altitude of 1,042 meters.
We've been here in mid-september 2017. The climb is relatively short and not that hard. Once you leave the forest you can see the amazing view of lake Shikotsu and the ocean. The summit was very windy but the view of the huge lava dome was absolutely stunning and even scary. Drive carefully in the long unpaved road that reaches the parking lot. Allocate 3-4 hours for the trip, including spending time at the summit and walking around the rim.

Mt. Tarumae, one of Hokkaido's iconic active volcanoes, offers an unforgettable experience for adventure seekers and nature lovers. The hike to the summit is relatively short, taking around 1-2 hours, but it rewards you with stunning views of Lake Shikotsu, the surrounding mountains, and the impressive volcanic crater. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for beginners with a moderate level of fitness. However, the terrain near the crater can be rocky, so proper hiking shoes are recommended. The sight of the steaming vents and rugged volcanic landscape is both thrilling and humbling, making it a must-visit for those exploring the natural beauty of Hokkaido. While the best times to visit are late spring to early fall, Mt. Tarumae offers a unique charm in every season. Just be sure to check volcanic activity updates before your hike. Whether you’re seeking breathtaking views or a memorable outdoor adventure, Mt. Tarumae does not disappoint.

Very easy to climb from the car park. Car park gets full in summer time in the weekend. So better be there earlier morning. Peak of East was very windy, you will need a jacket. Good things about Tarumae is There will be beautiful view of Lake Shiretoko all the way to the top. After exercise, recommendation is hot spring to Shiretoko and Marukoma. 1000jpy each but close for visitors by 15:00.

We climbed this today in 30 degree heat. I’m an unfit 54 year old. We were not equipped for the dry conditions (no walking boots or sticks) which resulted in lots of skidding and falls on the way back down. It’s an amazing view at the top but don’t let your husband reassure you that trainers will be fine. It took 3hrs but we headed back down after the shrine rather than doing the whole crater.
Julie H — Google review
Great short hike spot! We spent about 2.5hours for up and down including taking a rest few times on the way and top of the mountain. The parking area is quite limited so recommend to go early morning especially if you are going on the weekend. The path is very slippery so recommend to wear proper hike shoes.
Momoko T — Google review
A lovely hike from the parking lot up to the mountain. It takes roughly an hour to get up from the parking lot and you have several options to get back. From the top you get a stunning view. Bring enough water as there is no chance to get some from parking to the top. Toilets are available at the parking lot so better use them before you start your hike.
Stefan H — Google review
Car parking space available. Write your name down in the notebook inside the box next to hike trail start point, to help in case of emergency. Hike takes around 1 hour. The visibility was very low and the smell of gas (poisonous) was strong due to wind. So, we didn’t stay for long.

The restaurant とんかつの喜多蔵 offers a delectable and slightly expensive menu. The kurobuta tonkatsu is particularly outstanding, being described as the best ever tasted. The croquettes and cheese mince balls are also highly recommended dishes. To avoid the crowd, it is advisable to visit for dinner around 5.30pm. Overall, this establishment provides a delightful culinary experience with its high-quality tonkatsu and other delicious offerings.
Mind blowing food & impeccable service. Definitely recommend everyone to give this restaurant a support if you’re around the area. Prices are affordable & worth every penny for the portion that you get. The moment I took my first bite of the katsu, I was blown away by the perfect balance of crispy exterior and juicy, tender meat inside. They served us complementary ice cream as well. I won't be the first and the last to say this, but this place serves the beat tonkatsu in Tomakomai, and possibly even Hokkaido. That's if you believe the ridiculously tall trophy and three medals with the kanji "賞" on it, which means accolade. And to strengthen their credentials, there's a snapshot of an entry in the Michelin Hokkaido Guide. I knew this place served delicious tonkatsu, but the Michelin label caught me by surprise. However, the proof, as they say, is in the "pudding", in this case, the pork. And for just under 2,000 yen, I treated my belly people to two strips of fried pork cutlets (i.e. tonkatsu) - the meat is juicy, succulent and fried to perfection!!! Which explains why I ended up devouring two strips, as the popular 1,200 yen lunch set I ordered just wasn't enough to satisfy my belly people. Thankfully, you can order a la carte, and I gleefully asked for another strip of pork (770 yen). The second serving of meat was even thicker and juicier than the first!!! And I was also offered another serving of rice (for free!) I rounded off my meal with a scoop of ice cream (on the house). Those who do not have a sweet tooth can opt to go with coffee instead. What a magnificent lunch, truly worthy of the Michelin merit!!!

(Translated by Google) Go about 6km down the road opposite Ramen Daio on the national highway and it will suddenly be on your right. There is no big sign, so be careful not to miss it. The main attraction is the garden, but they also sell flowers, rose seedlings, miscellaneous goods, and run a cafe. It is a wild garden that combines native vegetation with an English garden. It becomes even wilder as it ages. The best time to see the roses is around early July. There are always some flowers in bloom, but other than roses, the garden is not overflowing with flowers, so it is designed to be enjoyed as a place to admire the delicate flowers. It's not very large, but it's nice to be able to relax (Original)

(Translated by Google) I visited in late July. The rose season, which began in June, had ended, and the next season is scheduled for late August. It was hot in Hokkaido, too, and the forest was quiet and deserted. I didn't take much precautions against insects, so I couldn't stay long, but I'd like to visit again, so I hope it stays there for a long time. It's quite a distance away, after turning off the bypass connecting Chitose and Tomakomai. The entrance is a little further back than the address I entered into the navigation system, but it was easy to find. (Translated by Google) A lovely garden located relatively close to Chitose Airport. It's a place in the forest where you can really feel the nature. The attached cafe and shop are also very stylish, and the forest mushroom soup at the cafe was very delicious. The admission fee is 800 yen for adults, but if you want to visit the park again and again, we recommend purchasing a passport for 1,000 yen that allows you to visit the park as many times as you like during the season from April to October. Lake Utonai Sanctuary is a true haven for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. This picturesque sanctuary boasts over 260 bird species, including majestic swans, ducks, and eagles. Visitors can wander along wooden boardwalks and observation decks that provide an unobtrusive way to appreciate the wetlands' beauty while preserving its delicate ecosystem. Even on days when birds are elusive, the serene landscape captivates with its tranquil charm.
The winter scenery is superb, and we were lucky enough to spot many different birds, including a flock of Shima enaga! Thank you so much to the workers at the centre who were super helpful and pointed out where to look for the birds we were interested in :)
Emilia D — Google review
Before taking the ferry to Oarai, we visited Lake Utonai Sanctuary. We had three hours to explore this place, which looked promising for birdwatching. The visitor center was great. It had a few huge binoculars and scopes pointed at the lake, books about local birds, a mini-exhibition, and various bird-related supplies for sale. The area and the protection of Lake Utonai are under the management of the Wild Bird Society of Japan. The lakeside path consists mostly of wooden walkways that branch off to visit different areas. At the end of one path, there was an excellent high wooden viewing hide, and we were the only ones there to use it. We climbed in absolute darkness and opened the thin windows to see the immensity of the lake. Excellent place to spend long minutes birdwatching! We could see many Taiga Bean-Geese, Whooper Swans, an Osprey, and even a White-tailed Eagle! There was only one thing that interrupted the tranquility of the place: at perfectly regular intervals, a deafening roar echoed throughout the wetland. Lake Utonai is 10 km from the New Chitose airport, and a plane landed there every two minutes. How does this affect all the wildlife?
Ariel F — Google review
If you’re looking for the shima enaga or other wildlife near Sapporo, this lake is the place! We wanted to see the shima enaga (long tailed tit/snow fairy) on our final day in Hokkaido. We were able to drop our bags at the Chitose airport and take the public bus to the lake (cash only, no IC card) and saw the shima enaga within minutes of arriving at the visitor’s building. There were also many many other birds and animals. The visitor centre here has free binoculars, great signage, maps in English, and even some big telescopes set up so you can view the eagles across the lake from inside. Very informative, cute gift shop, and looks like they do good conservation efforts for the Blakiston’s Fish Owl. Highly recommend this location. Note: visitor centre only open on weekends and specific holidays. If you are going from the airport to the lake by public transport, check the busses as they aren’t very frequent.
Georgia S — Google review
A tranquil walk through the mostly untouched forest rewards you with scenic views of the lake surrounded by tall grains. Did not manage to encounter any animals, but still an enjoyable unplug from Chitose city.
Xian L — Google review
It's a really beautiful place for nature lovers..i did go in the winter and the lake was frozen is a different thing though 🤣
Aqeed W — Google review
On the day we visited we could not observe any birds but it was still beautiful. This small lake and wetland area deserves a visit if you are in the chitose or Tomakomai area. The Sanctuary visitor center is only open on the weekends but that may be due to the pandemic.
Neil H — Google review
The main wetland visitor park is a few hundred metres down the road and more family friendly. This place here is more for the informed birder that wants to be away from tourists.

Really good to see the lake and birds. However it is quite windy and chill outside. Better to prepare some jumper in these days.

The Garden Restaurant, located in Northern Horse Park, offers a delightful dining experience with its spacious interior featuring a high ceiling and glass-enclosed garden. The menu is abundant, offering dishes like Zangi's lunch, pork belly, fillet cutlet, and hamburger curry. The food is praised for being fresh and delicious. While the atmosphere is relaxing with vast greenery surroundings, it can get busy at times due to its popularity.
It is a restaurant in the main building. It was very easy to spend and delicious. There is also a cake shop, and this cake is highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) I went in at lunchtime during the summer holidays. Since it was a weekday, there was no wait and I was seated right away. I forgot the official name, but the hamburger steak was 2,300 yen. Plates like cutlets are similarly priced, and the soba noodles are "relatively" affordable at around 1,000-1,500 yen. The plate featured a fairly small hamburger steak and a lot of vegetables. I'm not a big fan of vegetables, but this one was fresh, clean, and topped with Caesar dressing, so I ate it all. The hamburger steak was a dense, well-kneaded chunk of meat, and it paired well with the almost acidic, rich, and mellow demi-glace sauce, making it very delicious. While the value for money is questionable, the taste is definitely impressive. Well, it's a theme park restaurant, and even a pork bowl at New Chitose Airport would cost around 2,000 yen. Given the circumstances, I'd go there regardless of value for money.

Ramen restaurant

Aji no Daio Sohonten is a popular spot known for being the birthplace of curry ramen. It's located between Chitose and Tomakomai, easily accessible from the airport by car. The establishment can get busy during meal times, but it's spacious with quick table turnover. Customers purchase meal tickets and exchange them with staff for their orders. The cheese curry ramen and deer gyoza are highly recommended dishes.
I got the cheese curry ramen, and the deer gyoza. All of it was delicious! I did burn my mouth, but it was worth it! I definitely recommend stopping and trying the delicious options here.
Socoro S — Google review
Soup Curry is a food famous in Hokkaido, but Aji no Daio also offers one of the most famous Curry Ramen versions. And I just happened to be driving by the honten main store in Tomakomai, Hokkaido! I ordered one of their popular options, a Cheese Curry Ramen for 950¥. The smell of the curry was quite evident and the cheese looked absolutely mouth-watering.The noodles were soft and the portion very reasonable, every ramen bite carrying the curry flavor. The curry broth itself was not simply just “watered down” curry, as it had plenty of meaty, rich taste. Since the soup was so strong, the cheese was simply not necessary and couldn’t really be distinguished. Unless you’re a huge curry lover, though, I found myself halfway through the ramen wanting to cut the taste with some rice or some veggies to lighten it up. Still, it was worth having if you’re in town.
William T — Google review
Aji-no-daio is a fun place for a bowl. It’s well-known as “the birthplace of curry ramen.” It’s worth visiting if you like those two things. The curry is quite a standard Japanese curry flavor profile, I recommend a spicy version if you want a bit more punch. It’s located between Chitose and Tomakomai and easily accessible from the airport by car. It can get busy over meal times, but it’s a large establishment and tables turn over quickly, so you won’t have to wait long. Side menu items are worth exploring also. There is the ubiquitous chashu-don, but for my money and if you want something a little different try out their gyoza dumplings. There are several varieties of gyoza, all explained in Japanese and English on the menu. I had Hokkaidō venison (deer). The wrappers of the dumpling are as made in-house as well, giving them a pleasing chewy texture not often not found in commercial varieties. This is not refined gourmand style ramen, but you will leave satisfied with honest home cooked feel.
