Hikone Castle is a historic 17th-century castle with a picturesque garden and an on-site museum offering public tours.
lovely city, the Yangen cat is well designed for the city. Amazing castle which is still the original one, the Ii family has done the best work to make this castle as beautiful as possible. The Japanese Garden is worth to visit by the end.
Chaohu Z — Google review
One of the best 12 of japanese original castles that is preserved real well, inside and outside. Its rather on smaller scale which makes it unique. The surroundings are greenish and tranquil but the step to reach the castles are rather quite steep, be prepared!
H W — Google review
Hikone castle is a charmingly nice place with a cute mascot 'Hikonian'. You will find a stunning view from the top floor of the castle. Visiting the museum and the garden made the trip to Hikone wonderful. The place is very calm and gives you a good rest from the crowdy big cities. Please note that you need to walk - partly steep - steps, which are absolutely worth the effort! Clear recommendation!
Florian W — Google review
I went on a weekday morning , before 9AM. Took the train from Ishiyama station, then a pleasant 20-minute walk from Hikone station to the castle. Tickets were Y1000 for castle and gardens; Y1500 for castle/gardens + museum. I thought the grounds were well-maintained, staff were courteous, and the castle is awesome. The reconstructed Omote Goten (Daimyo’s Palace), present-day museum, is also beautiful, with a wonderful collection (much of it donated by the Ii family). Truly worth a visit, and returns — probably mid-November for the Fall colors, and April for the peak of sakura blooms (the grounds have hundreds of cherry trees). And, also, no maddening crowds of Kyoto or Osaka.
Joe P — Google review
Great castle with excellent views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding areas. The castle itself is atop a mountain so it is recommended to take a walking stick at the entrance as there will be a lot of uphill and downhill areas. There are toilets and shops as well. Also has a good museum and a great forested area with some wildlife. Surprisingly the moat also is home to some swans and fish.
[SYSTEM101] — Google review
there's 1000 fee for parking space and 800 fee per adult for castle and garden access. you have to climb a little bit going to the castle and in the inside the stair is kinda steep. the garden is so beautiful and clean.

Don't miss this attraction! There is so much to do and see. My friend and I got a kick out of Hikoyan's Birthday celebration. The castle itself and all of the thoughtful landscaping surrounding make for a relaxing day with the right amount of exercise. Photography by Jason Taylor

Cool castle grounds and some small buildings. Main draw is the wonderful views of lake Biwa and the mountains to the west. It was my first original Japanese castle interior to see, so I found it interesting. If you've already seen other original castle interiors, it's nothing special. At 3pm on a Saturday in June there was no line to enter the main keep.

Specialty Museums
Nestled within the historic grounds of Hikone Castle, the Hikone Castle Museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. Established in 1987 to mark the 50th anniversary of Hikone's municipal administration, this museum occupies the former Omote Goten, which once served as both a residence and administrative hub for the local feudal lord.
The Hikone Castle Museum is a beautifully preserved window into Japan’s Edo-period heritage, located right at the foot of the castle. Once part of the feudal lord’s residence, the museum offers not just artifacts but also an experience of walking through reconstructed palace rooms, tatami floors, sliding doors, and elegant architecture that reflect the lifestyle of the Ii clan. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of samurai armor, swords, Noh masks, tea ceremony utensils, and calligraphy works. Everything is tastefully displayed, with plenty of natural light and quiet hallways that invite you to slow down. While English signage is limited, the historical atmosphere speaks for itself. It’s not just a museum—it feels like stepping into a living past. An essential complement to your visit to Hikone Castle.

A little quiet museum documenting the brief history of its ancient owner. The wooden stage is a rare item. The garden is peaceful for a short meditation during your trip.
Jason H — Google review
Very beautifully preserved and straight out of japanese historical movie. The original room of the daimyo as well as its original garden are the best part of this museum!
H W — Google review
A Japanese National Treasure for sure. It was enjoyable to explore the castle grounds and go into the watch tower gates, unfortunately we were not allowed to go into the actual castle because of restoration efforts. It was not busy and we were able to take our time exploring.
M B — Google review
Wasn’t sure if it would be worth the extra time and money to visit the museum, but glad I did. Great pieces including masks, art, kimonos, and samurai armour. However, the highlight was the wonderfully gorgeous traditional garden that brought tears to my eyes. Incredibly beautiful. Ticket for museum, castle and gardens is ¥1,200 at the time of writing. Well worth it.
Jason C — Google review
Absolutely worth visiting. The grounds a beautiful and there is a great view of Lake Biwa from the castle.

Genkyuen Garden is a 17th-century landscaped garden located within the expansive grounds of Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The garden features a trail that connects islands and pavilions around a tree-lined pond, offering excellent views of Hikone Castle Tower.
It was enjoyable to visit Genkyu-en Garden, which is close to Hikone Castle. A peaceful respite from the bustle is provided by the garden's soothing ambiance, which includes a central pond, quaint bridges, and the castle's silhouette in the distance. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the circular walking track and fully appreciate the carefully planned scenery. The design of the garden, which was influenced by the Eight Views of Omi, exemplifies the grace of traditional Japanese design. Admission is reasonably priced, making it accessible for most travelers. If you’re in the Hikone area, Genkyu-en Garden is a must-visit spot that offers a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

Lord's private garden back in the days. The ticket comes in a bundle. There's a little tea shop to relax. Great view with the castle on the hill.
Jason H — Google review
Lovely garden, the route goes around a pond and leads up to a tea room. Nice view of Hikone castle. Interesting building to the left of the garden called “Raku-raku-en” which you can enter with no admission fee and have a look around.

Honestly, anyone not rating this a five is not well travelled. You'll rarely see such curated grounds, 500+ years old in such pristine condition. A garden that screams zen, a peaceful walk, a gorgeous view, unprecedented nature from cicadas buzzing to Dragonflies and bees buzzing around. The odd lizard too. It's part of the castle tour. Don't miss it.

The view overlooking the proud castle tower is spectacular. Such a beautiful scenery. I visited 2023 November and I could easily imagine that all four seasons would be appealing. The size of the pond is exquisite. The stamp also beatiful, love it 🤩

H Y — Google review
Beautiful views of the castle from this garden in the valley. We visited on a windy day and found the garden to be significantly warmer than the castle due to adjacent hills blocking the wind. A large lake in the middle has a number of carp but no colorful koi. A nice walk and work visiting if you’re already at the castle.

Nestled along the picturesque Castle Road, うなぎや源内 is a must-visit for anyone craving delicious eel dishes. With convenient coin parking nearby, it’s easy to stop by and indulge in their renowned hitsumabushi. Diners can choose from various serving sizes—large, average, or small—and each bite reveals perfectly crispy skin paired with tender meat that isn’t overly sweetened by sauce.
Most Japanese food in Japan is good or great. This restaurant is EXCELLENT. The hitsumabushi is by far the best Japanese dish I have ever tasted in my time in Japan and maybe ever. I can’t recommend it enough.

Sukiyaki restaurant
Sennari Tei Kyara is not just a restaurant, it's an exploration of Omi beef. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Omi beef through the intricate doilies that depict its life cycle and the detailed menu descriptions. The restaurant offers a wide range of Omi beef dishes including sashimi, sushi, hotpot, and Chawanmushi.
Best sukiyaki I’ve ever eaten - beef was tender and juicy. I’ve never had such succulent beef slices in such a rich, tasty sukiyaki broth before. Excellent service in a very traditional Japanese setting that was really lovely. So glad we had a chance to dine here. My only regret was not eating more. Definitely a must visit and hope I can return in the future.
Joshua C — Google review
While my conclusion was Omi beef indeed better than Matsusaka for personal taste. But the price tag a bit too high . This restaurant offer free car park if you dine there. Their English might not as good but tried their best to serve
S C — Google review
I had the opportunity to go to Sennari Tei Kyara tonight for dinner and it was out of this world. Ohmi beef sashimi, nigiri sushi, and sukiyaki. The sukiyaki had the silkiest and richest flavor I’ve ever experienced in beef, and every accompaniment to the meal was a tasty masterpiece in and of itself. The room that we ate in was built 400 years ago, and it set the atmosphere for a dining experience that I’ll remember for years to come, complete with the sukiyaki main dish cooked by the staff on a charcoal grill in our table. The service was top notch, and I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants to have a fabulous meal…and maybe make their friends and family back home jealous. I almost cried the food was so good.
Chris G — Google review
The beef sukiyaki was delicious and the serving staff, Ms Yasui, was really helpful to suggest places for me to stay for the night. Thank you very much!
Janice C — Google review
It not only a lunch, but also a journey to know Omi beef. I search the restaurant in the internet, and knew if you want to try Omi beef, must go here. It’s interesting the doily shows a life of Omi beef. Also, the menu described a lots of information of the life of Omi beef. There are varieties of dish about Omi beef such as sashimi, sushi, hotpot, Chawanmushi to show the face of Omi beef. The most impressive dish is sashimi and Chwanmushi. You won’t have a lot chance to try raw beef, it just like a fish with the fat. Very balance tasty. Omi beef Chwanmushi contain a great flavor of beef. The egg was very juicy and you can feel Omi beef in your every mouth. It’s a great restaurant I love it, and the stuff is very kind just like normal Japanese restaurant does.

Randomly walked into this restaurant after visiting Hikone Castle. Nice Japanese set up. Good quality Omi beef (近江牛). Beef sukiyaki is a must try (minimum 2 orders). Bbq beef is not bad as well but we preferred sukiyaki.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful sushi experience, look no further than Umizan in Hikone. This charming spot offers an impressive array of lunch sets that are not only affordable but also packed with flavor. For just 1280 yen, you can enjoy a delicious meal complete with free miso soup and generous refills. The sushi may be petite, but each piece is crafted with care and boasts excellent balance.
Excellent value and good sushi. There was a wait to sit down but then the food came out quickly. We paid around $10 per person and we were very full at the end.

Contrary to the relatively low rating on Google map, this place deserves a higher rating. the menu is rather wide and varied with seasonal offerings too. The food is fresh and reasonably priced. The food service is fast.

First time in this restaurant…very nice atmosphere. Very fresh tasting sushi..I will be back soon!!
Kai L — Google review
Chanced upon this sushi outlet Umizan in Hikone. Wanted to try, I was thinking that I just order maybe 2 plates to try. The sushi was very fresh, very good quality. Decided to stay and have an early dinner here because it was really good. I collate it with a popular sushi joint In Kyoto, the quality is much better for the better price (what I paid in Kyoto, I had more servings of chutoro at Umizan). Go really off you are going for dinner. I was there at 5pm and after 3 orders of chutoro, they were sold out for the day. Service was ok initially when there was only a few customers. When the customers started coming in at 6pm, the sushi chef could barely cope. My orders were taking longer and longer to prepare. But that's the only draw back. Do visit for good sushi at the right price.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by for the first time in June on my way to my parents' house. It was surprisingly delicious. The price is a factor, but perhaps the food is delivered directly from Fukui? The freshness and quality were undeniable. The wide variety of options, including set menus, seasonal specials, and limited-time specials, is appealing, and there's a wide selection, from high-end to low-end. The speed from ordering to serving is fast. They also have a wide selection of alcoholic beverages. As a subsidiary of the Heiwado Group, this is to be expected. Orders are made via touchscreen, and various payment methods are accepted. The parking lot can accommodate roughly 40 cars. There's only a small counter with seating, about 8 to 10 people. Table seating is the norm, and semi-private rooms are available for families to enjoy a leisurely meal. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. If you value flavor over mediocre conveyor-belt sushi, this is the place for you.

The CAINZ Hikone Store is a massive home center that feels like an IKEA on steroids, offering an extensive range of products for your home and garden. With its spacious layout, shoppers can easily spend hours exploring the vast selection of Japanese-designed items. The store also features helpful staff and is conveniently located next to a supermarket and several cafes, making it a perfect one-stop shopping destination in Shiga.
While driving, I looked for a Ramen-structured entrance mat (60 x 40 cm) but couldn't find it. I wondered if they had run out of similar products or if the store had no stock while looking at the national treasure castle from the rooftop parking lot. I decided to continue driving, hoping to get an answer from the store manager.

A medium sized station (personal opinion). There is a convenient store inside also maps of tourism attraction around Hikone. At the exit, there is roundabout with a statue of Ii Naomasa, the first feudal lord of Hikone.

The Omi Tetsudo part of the station does not have any English signage & does not support any electronic payments either. Those who wish to visit Taga & Tarobo but can not read Kanji needs to rethink their travel plan.

It’s a great location for an emerging tourist town. Still needs some improvements on the interior but my guess is that this will grow into a popular tourist area and hence a nicer interior to the station. Looks great in the outside.

Shiga Prefecture Gokoku Shrine, built in 1876 by Ii Naonori, the last ruler of Hikone Clan, is a place of reverence for the warriors who perished in the Boshin War. Today, it pays tribute to thousands of fallen soldiers and seeks divine intervention for eternal peace and security. The shrine exudes a serene atmosphere and offers a tranquil space for visitors to express gratitude and renew their commitment to avoid repeating past mistakes.
You must visit and pray for a moment after/before the castle!

Around the shrine are the Peace Monument and war-related statues and memorials. These were erected to console the spirits of war dead from Shiga Prefecture, people involved in wars, and animals sacrificed in wars, from the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War to World War II. Yume Kyōbashi Castle Road is a charming thoroughfare lined with recreated Edo-period buildings, featuring traditional white walls and black lattice windows. This street holds historical significance as it was once part of the area connecting different sections where warriors and merchants lived during the Edo period. Today, it has been transformed into a bustling modern hub with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir stores.
Very cool and beautiful town
Behdad M — Google review
The street was empty and only a handful of shops were open. Many close on Mondays and/or Tuesdays so try to avoid those days when you plan to get here. Not sure how crowded it could be, though. We haven't seen many tourists during our three days stay here at all.
Kiseki M — Google review
Yume Kyobashi Castle Road in Hikone is a beautifully preserved shopping street that blends Edo-period aesthetics with modern convenience. Just a short walk from Hikone Castle, the road is lined with traditional white-walled merchant houses that now host cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and local craft stores. It’s not overly commercialized, so it retains a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere that makes strolling here genuinely relaxing. The area is especially lovely in spring and autumn, when the scenery becomes picture-perfect. You can sample local specialties like Omi beef croquettes, freshly made mochi, or pick up elegant calligraphy brushes and ceramics. It’s a perfect place to slow down after sightseeing and enjoy a taste of both history and local flavor. Romantic, nostalgic, and full of character.
CVM T — Google review
The scenery is pleasant but there are just too many eateries and not enough retail shops. It would be nice to have a few stores that showcase Hikone wares.
Shu N — Google review
(Trip was made back then on 26 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) We thought it would be bustling with activity but the streets were quiet and bare when we visited 2 years ago. It’s quite a nice neighbourhood for a walk but unfortunately a lot of the shops were closed. While Kyoto was suffering from over-tourism, it’s neighbouring prefecture in Shiga suffers from the lack of it (pre-Covid-19 times of course). Really hope that the town can pick itself up once Japan opens up for tourists again.

It's a nice place to stroll around. There are a lot of souvenir shops and food shops. If you walk a little further, you will find "Yobancho square" which has different kinds of restaurants.

The ambiance at Hinai Chicken Hokkoriya was delightful, with a traditional and snug seating arrangement. Their Oyakudon was generously portioned and had an excellent flavor. The servers were friendly and went out of their way to provide information about the food, including how to consume certain items. During my visit, they also offered a delectable takeaway pudding that I couldn't resist. Overall, I highly recommend this chicken restaurant for its delicious dishes and warm atmosphere.
The atmosphere was fantastic. It is a traditional style sitting which was very cozy. The Oyakudon we had was well portioned and the taste was very good. Our server was very nice and answered all of our questions about the food, how to eat certain items etc. When we were there they had a takeaway pudding which I ended up getting which tasted great. Highly recommend.

I would like to say this could be one of the best Oyakudon that I ever had (Sorry if it did not live up to your expectations, please introduce me). The texture and flavors of each mouth are watering, and the ramen was not bad as well. The atmosphere really sets you into Japan traditional sitting style. Really did enjoy my lunch here 😋 and definitely will drop by again if I pass by next time! Do note that there are free parking just beside the store if you are planning to dine in here ( I did not know this and went to park at a paid carpark)... Please defend this place if Japan ever goes to war.

Excellent oyako-don and service N35°16.254' E136°15.086' This popular Local Hinai-chicken-izakaya on the Yume Kyōbashi Castle Road in Hikone is housed in an atmospheric traditional-style house, serving a variety of local chicken dishes, such as yakitori and chicken with rice donburi. There is no English menu, but staff speak a little English. At opening time, this izakaya fills up quickly. In April 2018, we started with ordering an exquisite salad with small shrimps, chicken leg and breast with soya sauce, followed with oyako-don (chicken, egg/rice bowl) and chicken drumsticks. Our first time oyako-don was delicious. We finished with a nice dessert; we cannot remember the name. The owner helped us with ordering, looked after us and called our guesthouse that we would arrive later that evening. We now understand that people cue in the afternoon. Their oyako-don is excellent. Recommended

This will be an odd review, especially for a meat and chicken restaurant. We are vegan, and there is very little in town late in the evening for us. But when we stumbled on this restaurant, they were so helpful. We had the best yuba I've ever had, edamame and roasted tomatoes. A perfect evening supper for us. And the staff couldn't have been kinder! Lovely atmosphere, too.

Out of many beef restaurants, this one stands out for the prices and qualities of their food offerings. Oyakodon (chicken and egg over rice), although a bit weird as its name literally means a parent-child over rice, is their specialty out of local ingredients and was quite good. If you happen to be around, you may want to check this place out for sure. Highly recommend!!

There are several restaurants near the train station that caught our attention, and I have to say that this place didn’t at first. It’s older, not flashy, it’s not modern or gimmicky on the outside…which makes it the perfect place for me. The menu is traditional Japanese teishoku, local udon, fried mix plates, eel, kushi katsu, etc. Ordered the mixed fry plate and it was great. The kitchen is generational in the same family and the service was very kind. Highly recommend. Look past the newer, flashy places. You won’t be disappointed. Right beside the Hikone station also makes it very convenient. Top menu choice, the skewered fried tuna (maguro fry). THE BEST!

Lake Biwa, named after the shape of a Japanese lute, is a picturesque destination offering various water sports and leisurely strolls. Located in Shiga Prefecture, it is surrounded by attractions such as Hikone Castle and Chikubu Island. The area provides opportunities for outdoor activities like visiting Rakuraku Garden, Koki Park, Takeshima Island, and more.
Absolute stunning. I take a bus tour and one of the place we visited is lake biwa. This place is definitely a hidden gem just like almost everything else in eastern Hokkaido. Nothing that is mindblowing but the vibe and atmosphere is so serene and i dont mind spending hours just to sit in the bench and enjoy everything i lies my eyes on. It is clean and they sell a nice ice cream there. During my visit on summer (june) it feels pretty breezy and cool unlike the hot weather that i experience in Tokyo. The issue is that it is kinda difficult to reach this place without bus tour or public transport.

I captured these images of "Lake Biwa" from a moving train while traveling on the 'Kosei Line' from Shin-Osaka to Tsuruga. Looking at a map of Japan, I never imagined that "Lake Biwa" would feel so expansive, almost like an ocean, until I experienced its beauty and vastness firsthand. It was a truly remarkable journey and a discovery for me.

Had the privilege to see Lake Biwa from a viewpoint up in Hieizan. That vantage point gives a better perspective how the lake's shape is indeed similar to a biwa, a type of traditional Japanese lute. Overwhelming size which makes sense as it is the largest freshwater lake in Japan. From what I've read, this is also considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world given its formation was ~5 million years ago.

I stayed at a resort near biwa lake. It was the largest lake that I’ve ever seen in my life. The view is so beautiful. So calming and relaxing. I’d like to go on picnic or have a bbq party with my friends there 👍👍

What a place for relaxing. Great scenery over where silvery water meets the bright sky in the morning after heavy rain. A good place for onsen without doubt. Not to forget that cycling here is such a perfect place

Lake Biwa is a stunning natural gem located in Shiga Prefecture. The views are breathtaking, with serene waters surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s perfect for outdoor activities like cycling, boating, and hiking, offering something for everyone. The area also boasts charming towns with rich history and delicious local cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or an adventure, Lake Biwa is a must-visit destination. The sunset over the lake is particularly unforgettable, making it a memorable spot for nature lovers and photographers alike!

Was not able to visit it but passed by it via thunderbird train from kanazawa to Osaka. Was able to get some pics and video of it

Started at Otsu by Biwako hotel, we biked up the west side of the lake. There is a dedicated bike lane all along the lake. It's not easy to get lost as long as you follow the road along the water. Going over the biwako ohashi you end up biking through a little town with quaint and cute little stores. It's a bit of a round about way. Going back down the east side of the lake you end up on the "bike path" along the highway. It is not the safest way but it's the only way. South lake round trip is about 50km. North lake is about 170km according to the Japanese sweets shop ojisan. Definitely a good workout to burn off all the yumminess that went into out bellies during this trip. :)

Sawayama Castle Ruins, once the stronghold of shogun Ii Naomasa, now lies in disrepair with only remnants of its stone walls atop a forested hill. The castle met its demise after losing a crucial battle at the turn of the 17th century. Visitors can access the site via forest trails and experience a sense of historical intrigue as they explore this ancient relic.
Good Job

The main route takes 15-20 minutes (going up) for a 1km high mountain. At the top we can't find the castle nor its ruins, but I guarantee you you'd have the best view of the city, the train lines and the elevator tower. No entrance fee.

A wonderful castle ruin with many baileys. The main gate is on the Maibara side, but it seems the road from there is currently closed. Be careful, as the gates on both routes, the road climbing from Ryutanji and the road climbing from Daido Benzaiten, close at 5pm. From here, I climbed the mountain, and there were some remains such as the remains of the enclosure, earthworks, and moats, but my impression was, was this really the castle that Mitsunari used until the Battle of Sekigahara, the final battle of the Sengoku period? It was quite elaborate during the Keicho period, and there should have been at least a stone wall. I didn't see the main part of the castle, but I wonder if the foot of the mountain was the main part. Or was it the result of careful division of the castle? Nestled in the heart of Hikone, the Hikone City National Museum offers a delightful glimpse into the region's rich history. Although smaller than its counterpart, the Hikone Castle Museum, this charming venue captivates visitors with unique exhibits like a detailed LEGO replica of Hikone Castle and intricate dioramas showcasing life during the Edo period. Admission is free, making it an accessible stop for anyone exploring the area.

A very small museum dedicated to a TV show about Naotora Ii, a medieval lord(Or lady, you should say...) of the castle. If you are not into it there is little to see here as there are only two display rooms, and the employees at the window of this museum are... well, let's just say they won't try to make eye contact with you or say anything to you. Well, at least you got a package deal getting in here with the museum and Tenshukaku right.

When visiting Shiga Prefecture in Japan, one must not miss the chance to savor Omi Beef, a renowned local gourmet delight. Gichuji Temple is a hidden gem nestled in a residential area and is part of a collection of sites worth exploring, including Omi Jingu Shrine, Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, and Saikyoji Temple. The temple holds historical significance as it enshrines Minamoto no Yoshinaka and Tomoe Gozen. Visitors can pay their respects at the grave and recite the Lotus Sutra's Ego and Fumon Shina.
This random temple in the middle of a residential neighbourhood enshrines Minamoto no Yoshinaka, but more importantly, the legendary Tomoe Gozen. In short, Tomoe Gozen was a Heian period female samurai who is famous for her great strength, fighting alongside and leading the men, killing men with her bare hands. When her army was defeated, she married her childhood friend Minamoto no Yoshinaka. When he died, the story goes that she guarded his grave for the rest of her life, refusing to give her real name, and dying at 90 years old. Anyway, it's unlikely that her grave is really at this site, and records for women are bad in this period in history. That said, just outside of the temple is her jizo statue, in a small room filled with lanterns, offerings, candles, incense. If you visit, the site is managed by two women with extensive knowledge of all the kami enshrined here. There are documents in Japanese and English available. Anyway, the dedication is truly beautiful. I appreciate this place very much. My heart is happy. Thank you so much. By the way, you can get omamori and goshuin of hour preferred kami. Just fantastic for those who care about this. 😍

I was surprised and delighted to find a small museum to Bashō inside the temple, which included his walking stick. It's 300 yen to enter and I was the only one there. There is a flyer with info in English but otherwise everything is in Japanese, so beware of that. For any Japanese history/literature buff, I'd highly recommend a visit.

(Translated by Google) 2024.11.2 A journey through the 53 sections of the old Tokaido The last time I traveled was in May 2023. It's been over a year since then. Maybe I felt a little sad about reaching the goal. There is a temple called Gichu-ji near Zeze Station in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, which was my goal last time. As the name suggests, this temple houses the grave of Kiso Yoshinaka. Yoshinaka subjugated the Heike and entered Kyoto, and was later defeated by Yoshitsune, who went to Kyoto on the orders of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Yoshinaka's head, which was exposed in the Kamogawa River, was buried at this temple. A few years later, a nun visits this temple. The nun whose name is not spoken is Tomoe Gozen, Yoshinaka's concubine, and the Tomoe mound still stands quietly next to Yoshinaka's grave. There is also the tomb of another great person in this temple. It is Matsuo Basho's grave. To be honest, I was surprised that Basho's grave was located in such a small temple. Basho, who passed away at a travel window in Osaka, left a will saying, ``My body should be sent to Kisozuka,'' and a tomb was built in this temple, and Basho's tomb is located between Tomoezuka and Kisozuka. Yugen, a disciple of Basho, left behind this haiku: “I guess it’s cold, back-to-back with Kiso-dono.” There is an ``Okino Hall'' in the back of the temple, and a seated statue of Basho is enshrined on the front altar. The moment I came face-to-face with the statue of the old man in the quiet interior of the shrine grounds, I felt a connection between the narrow path in the inner part of the temple and the journey I had taken, even if it was only for a moment. That moment passed in the blink of an eye. While traveling, there are many moments when I feel led to this place and realize that I have come. That was the case on this trip as well. I was in my 30s when I started this journey, and before I knew it, I was in my 50s on October 31st. Matsuo Basho died at the age of 51 while being called an old man. Although the times are different, I have lived in Basho's later years. “I get sick from traveling and my dreams wander through dry fields” Matsuo Basho One side note Basho Matsuo may have been considered a man with strong legs who walked the narrow streets of Oku, but it turns out that he had severe hemorrhoids that made it difficult for him to travel.

(Translated by Google) The photo was taken on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 7:17 AM. I had already decided the day before to go on the morning of October 15th. I say "decided" because I was interested, and I looked up information on Wikipedia and tourist information websites. Actually, there is a Jizo Hall (a temple hall) next to the entrance of Yoshinaka-ji Temple (within the temple grounds), and I had intended to visit there. That said, I wasn't particularly interested in the graves of Kiso Yoshinaka (Minamoto no Yoshinaka) and Matsuo Basho, or the Tomoezuka (the grave of Tomoe Gozen, who served Yoshinaka and stayed with him until his death), both of which are located within the temple grounds. I believe the word "Buddha" can be broadly divided into two meanings. One refers to Buddhas such as Shakyamuni Buddha, Vairocana Buddha, and Amitabha Tathagata, as well as Bodhisattvas such as Kannon, Samantabhadra, Manjusri, and Maitreya. The other refers to the term used to refer to deceased people (for example, in detective dramas, when detectives or forensic investigators on the scene of a murder case say things like, "The estimated time of death of the deceased Buddha is..."). If a temple has a cemetery, the task of offering prayers for such Buddhas is the responsibility of the temple's head priest, and I believe it is beyond the scope of our involvement as outsiders. Returning to Gichu-ji Temple and the Jizo Hall, it was too early in the morning for both the temple's main gate and the Jizo Hall to be open. There was a sign reading "Closed Today," but the temple is normally open every day except Mondays, so they would likely open at 9:00 AM. Therefore, all of the photos shown here are taken in front of the temple gate. Researching Gichu-ji Temple reveals the aforementioned names of Kiso Yoshinaka, Tomoe Gozen, Rokkaku Yoshikata, Matsuo Basho, Chomu Hoshi, and Yasuda Yojuro, among others. Among them, however, is one intriguing figure: "fixer" Miura Giichi. He was born in Oita Prefecture and his father, Miura Kazuhei, once served as mayor of Oita. Giichi was the eldest son of his mother, Misao, and had five siblings. For reference, here is a brief summary of Miura Giichi, who contributed greatly to the reconstruction of Gichu-ji Temple. (JR and Keihan Electric Railway Zeze Stations are located in roughly the same place. About 5 minutes walk from JR Keihan Zeze Station. There is no parking lot, so use the nearby coin parking. There is the grave of Yoshinaka Kiso, and Matsuo Basho, who loved the people of Konan and was a big fan of Yoshinaka, will also be buried here according to his will. There are many haiku monuments in the temple grounds, and it was fun to look for and trace the haiku while looking at the map of the temple grounds that I received. I came to see the ceiling painting of the Okina-do Hall, which is located in the temple grounds and enshrines Matsuo Basho, as part of Ito Jakuchu's floral ceiling painting! It has been faithfully reproduced using digital technology and is available to the public. Thank you. I'm glad I was able to visit! Basho flowers, which are the origin of the name Basho, were blooming, and seeing them for the first time was a sight to behold! I thought it looked a bit like a banana, but its English name is Japanese banana. Basho-san loves cabbage. It is OK to take photos inside the temple grounds. It was a hot day, but the turtles seemed to be doing well. Nanzen-ji Sammon Gate is a must-see attraction in Kyoto. The massive Sanmon gate offers an amazing view of the city from its second level. Climbing to the top provides a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, including the Leaping Tiger Garden. The entrance fee is 600 yen for adults, and visitors should be cautious when climbing the steep staircase. Despite this, reaching the top rewards you with stunning scenery, especially during cherry blossom season.
Beautiful and free to visit and walk around. This is the outer gate and area in front of Nanzenji. Not crowded early in the morning. You can pay a small fee to enter the temple proper to visit the garden, stairs, and other gates. Definitely worth visiting if in the area. There is a stone aqueduct built in the 1800s next door as well.

Nanzenji Temple near Keage Incline Road is a must-visit. The grounds are vast, filled with cherry blossoms, and not too crowded with tourists. You can enjoy the view from above and walk around the temple for some peace and quiet.

An attractive gate within the Nanzen-ji complex, great for a brief rest from the heat and people-watching down the quiet avenues. It's possible to pay to climb up the historical steps, we did not.

Nanzen-ji is quite the compound, the main focal point is of course Sanmon gate and the surrounding gardens. Because of some refurbishment work the temple itself was not open but we walked around and tried to dodge the massive swarm of school children visiting. The gate itself is beautiful, built with exquisite internal engineering. The fact that the surrounding garden plots involve my favourite mix of trees and moss design is just a huge extra. Keep an eye out for the amazing architecture of the temple and garden buildings, their roofs are particularly inspiring.

Soba noodle shop
Monzenya is a delightful eatery conveniently located near the castle, boasting a parking space at the back. Its main attraction is their delectable soba noodles, accompanied by a noteworthy specialty called marinated sweet water fishes. PayPay payments are accepted here. The restaurant offers a wide variety of soba choices, with impeccable noodles and broth that leave customers satisfied. To conclude the meal, patrons can indulge in zenzai dessert bowls.
We enjoyed lunch here on our day trip to Hikone. The staff were really friendly, they had an English menu. The place was very popular. We tried duck noodle soup, mackerel noodle soup with side plates of local beef and sweet fish. All delicious and very filling. Famous for a reason.

Had a large portion of tempura zaru soba. It was a reasonably sized portion and the soba was nice, but nothing special. The tempura was not the best I have had but for a quick lunch in a tourist hotspot, it was perfectly adequate. They seem to server a limited run of soba mixed with Shiso leaves which I wasn't made aware of until I had ordered. I would have definitely liked to try it had the waiter mentioned it when I sat down at the table.

(Translated by Google) [May 2025] This is a very difficult place for first-time visitors. That is, you don't know if it's open or not. From my experience of visiting various coffee shops and snack shops in Japan, this type of shop is often closed without notice. Because of this premise, I checked the internet before visiting this time, but the information on the internet has been wrong, and it has been true that the shop has been closed suddenly. When I first saw this place from the outside, I wasn't sure if it was really open. First of all, the shop is set back a little from the road, so you can't see inside the shop at all. The large glass surface with the curtain looks dark and you can't see inside the shop, and the door is a large wooden one made of a single board. If you look closely, you can see a small "OPEN" sign, but in my experience, this has been a trick question many times. In other words, it's the kind of thing where the OPEN sign is left out. Such shops have the OPEN sign up even in the middle of the night. Being quite skeptical, I approached slowly. And when I opened the door, I found the shop open as usual. It is a shop where you can get light meals at lunchtime, but it was not yet lunchtime so I ordered a pain demi-glace, which is like the inside of a slice of bread (although the preparation and composition are different to that of sliced bread), a square carré cassonade, elaborately flavored with rum, almond cream, and cassonade (unrefined raw sugar extracted from sugar cane), and an iced coffee. I then told the shop staff how it had taken so much courage to enter this shop. I unexpectedly heard the story of the twists and turns that had led to it, which was quite dramatic. Furthermore, when I asked why everything was in French, I found out that the chef was French! It was a very memorable experience. During a recent visit to Hikone, I stumbled upon Ginsui, a charming sushi restaurant that caught my eye from the station's rotary. Intrigued by its offerings, I decided to indulge in their extra-large nigiri featuring fatty tuna—an absolute steal at 2,300 yen! Each of the eight pieces was delightful, and I also ventured into trying their salt nigiri for the first time, which was equally satisfying.
Stumbled on this place late Nov 2023 and was delighted with the experience. My 日本語 is a mix of 3yo and year 5 including kanji so I was attempting to exercise my language skills to the amusement of the two 寿司 masters. Food, atmosphere and presentation encouraged me to consider going back but schedule did not allow.

Even the extra-large nigiri with fatty tuna was a great deal at 2,300 yen, so I splurged and ordered the salt nigiri individually instead of as part of a set. I was very satisfied with each of the eight extra-large nigiri, but I was also very satisfied with the salt nigiri, which I had never tried before. (Translated by Google) I often go there for dinner ☺️ The cost performance is good and you can eat seasonal dishes, so I personally prefer to order dishes rather than sushi 🥰 Although it is a sushi restaurant, I highly recommend the seasonal grilled broad beans and young corn 🩷 lol (Original)

(Translated by Google) It's delicious. It's reasonably priced but has a luxurious feel. I'd like to go there once a week or once a month. (Original)

Yakiniku restaurant
Ikkyutei Hikone Main Store is a yakiniku restaurant in Hikone that offers delicious meat at an affordable price. It has been around for six years and recently introduced a tablet for ordering. The meat still maintains its great taste and the yukhoe dish, which includes apples, has a delightful texture that complements the flavors well.
Great meat at reasonable price. Went there twice during our short stay at Hikone.

The omi beef is shockingly good! The thinly sliced beef are well-seasoned, tasting so well with the green onion! I think it is a must to order. The special plate of 3 beef selections, one is so frangrant and tendered, while the other two also tastes good. Also not to forget to order to cold noodles!

近江牛is good and not the best

(Translated by Google) I've been visiting delicious yakiniku restaurants. This was my first time at this restaurant I ate delicious Omi beef. It was charcoal grilled and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. I think a reservation is essential. When I was leaving, there were a lot of people waiting and it was very crowded in front of the register. I think the restaurant staff should guide people a little more. I was satisfied with the meat. I was also satisfied with the service. The parking lot was small (there is a second parking lot). Too bad. The oxtail soup was quite strong.

(Translated by Google) Delicious Omi beef! We had dinner at the Route Inn Hikone. There were two of us, so we ordered a variety of half portions, and in the end we ordered the "recommended" red meat again, which was the best. It was so delicious that it made us smile. The only disappointing point was that we made a reservation at 6pm and the couples' seats on the second floor were empty, but we were assigned a seat next to the toilet. We could hear the toilet flushing frequently, which was a turn-off. It's better to avoid the couples' seats at the very back. *The parking lot was full after we paid the bill.

(Translated by Google) This is a long-established yakiniku restaurant that has been renovated several times to create a modern, upscale and casual restaurant. Ordering has evolved to a touch panel All the meats are delicious and satisfying: bone-in ribs, liver, offal, and tongue. The salad was elaborate and delicious, and even the stone-grilled bibimbap at the end was delicious. The parking lot is narrow, so it might be better to use the second parking lot on the side of the expressway interchange. The customer service is polite and not pushy, so it's a comfortable place.

(Translated by Google) I visited Ikkyutei Hikonehon, an Omi beef yakiniku restaurant in Hikone City. I visited around 7pm on a Saturday night, but was able to enter without waiting. I was really looking forward to visiting this yakiniku restaurant as I could try Omi beef. The meat was beautifully presented and very sweet and juicy. As for the service...I was a bit worried because one young, seemingly new employee was placing hot food on the table, and I was worried that someone might drop it and get hurt. I would like them to provide more training.
