Enryaku-ji Temple, a sprawling Tendai Buddhist monastery with a history dating back to the 7th century, offers a surreal and peaceful experience. Accessible by driving or taking the train to Sakamoto and then the Funicular up the mountain, this place is enveloped in tranquility with periodic ringing of the peace bell and misty clouds creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Very nice quiet tourist destination away from busy Kyoto. Amazing view of Lake Biwa. Recommend coming in fall or Sakura season. Reminder to be quiet and respectful on Temple grounds. When going, recommend to take the cable car in Sakamoto(坂本), it is the longest cable car in Japan.

Visited this place during public holiday in September, 2025. One of the historical building/temple was undergoing restoration. Overall, had good experience visiting and witnessing Japans historical place.
Kaleem S — Google review
Visited in July recently. Reached here from Kyoto station with a train ride, then a bus, a cable car, a ropeway and finally a hike. It may sound overwhelming but journey itself is worth it and the destination is as good as Koyozumi-dera. The accessibility is definitely why there are not many tourists here This temple grounds is quite big. Unfortunately during our visit the main hall was under renovation. May just visit again if ever in Kyoto again.
Google L — Google review
From religious point of view: very important place and definitely worth it of you are interested in Japanese branch pf Buddhism and Japanese history and culture in general. General tourist point of view: there is really nothing special about it that would justify the entrance fee of 1000¥ + the cable or ropeway if you decide to take it for 1800¥ roundway. Any smaller temple in nature is just as beautiful. It really depends on what kind of tourist you are.
Finite T — Google review
We walked about 10 minutes from the cable car station to the temple. It was a clear and crisp day which made the short stroll really enjoyable. There is a loop bus that goes to the Heizan-Sakamoto JR station.

Enryakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Mount Hieizan, is a treasure trove of history, spirituality, and stunning natural beauty. As the birthplace of Japanese Tendai Buddhism, it holds immense cultural and religious significance. The temple complex is vast, with beautifully preserved buildings spread across serene forested grounds. Each area offers a unique glimpse into its rich history. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for reflection, and the views of Lake Biwa from the mountain are breathtaking. Whether you’re interested in history, Buddhism, or simply seeking tranquility, Enryakuji Temple is a must-visit destination near Kyoto!
Gemi K — Google review
This temple is located on a truly sacred mountain. There aren’t many souvenir shops, food stalls, or entertainment spots nearby, but that’s exactly what keeps its spiritual atmosphere pure. It may not suit those looking for fun or sightseeing, but the peacefulness and lack of crowds make it even more special. For Buddhists, it’s without a doubt one of Japan’s true sacred places.
Amanda T — Google review
Visited in October’25. Super disappointed as the main building is fully under construction. The way to the temple is not the easiest, the entrance is not free, but the experience is not the best. The museum doesn’t give much information unless you do not only speak Japanese but also know the buddhism context very well. Wouldn’t recommend visiting unless they are done with the construction works. However the nature is amazing!

Tsuruga Station

Train station
Tsuruga Station is a significant transportation hub in Tsuruga City, serving as the first station in Fukui Prefecture on the Hokuriku Line and a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The station sees frequent stops of limited express trains like 'Shirasagi' connecting Nagoya and Kanazawa, as well as the 'Thunderbird' connecting Osaka and Kanazawa. With its recent renovation, the station building now boasts modern facilities.
Visiting "Tsuruga Station" and Tsuruga City for the first time was quite an experience. The station is quite large, thanks to the extension of the "Hokuriku Shinkansen" to Tsuruga in March 2024. After exiting the west side of the station, I noticed a variety of hotels, local souvenir shops, Starbucks, and even the campus of Fukui University right behind the Starbucks. I saw many visitors from overseas, and I hope they enjoyed their stay in the elegantly modest and beautiful city of Tsuruga as much as I did.
Okawa T — Google review
During my trip to Kansai earlier this year, I accidentally boarded the wrong train from Kyoto and headed north instead of Osaka. Thankfully, the passengers and train staff were incredibly kind and helpful. With their assistance, I managed to get off at Tsuruga Station. The station staff there patiently explained which train I should take, and I was able to board the correct train to Osaka without any issues. This little mishap turned into one of the most memorable parts of my journey. I was deeply touched by the calmness, warmth, and willingness to help from complete strangers, all with smiles on their faces. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who lent a hand—I truly experienced the kindness and hospitality of the Japanese people.

The Shinkansen extension station is very nice! Using the Hokuriku Arch Pass, Tsuruga station is where you change from Shinkansen to Limited Express Thunderbird or Shirasagi. ***BECAREFUL*** Once you get off, you have limited time to get Limited Express reserve seats. If there are a few people getting reserve tickets at the machine or in ticketing office, you will miss the Limited Express and you will have to wait until the next available (seems like an hour). One the other hand, Tsuruga area near the station is very nice to explore and enjoy.

We made a stopover here on the way to Kyoto to go to the sea. We were able to lock our luggage in the lockers at "Exit West". Just go all the way to the end. From there we travelled to the Matsubara Beach Resort. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy because the buses don't run that often. It's best to check beforehand :)
Nora M — Google review
Rude behavior by a crew member on the Shiragagi 14 train, Car No. 3, from Tsuruga Station to Nagoya Station due to luggage issues. No large luggage compartment for oversize luggage on the super rapid train and the crew put my luggage to the space near the door. Just ask me to "go away!" when I talked to him. I have to constantly monitor my luggage to avoid being stolen from time to time. I can feel that Japan is heading towards right-wing and becoming anti-tourist in some situation.
Dennis W — Google review
The sea air sharpens; gulls cry above new platforms. Tsuruga is both continuation and promise — the line reborn, its steel now touching salt and light. The Hokuriku journey ends where waves greet rails. Tourist Tip: New terminus (since 2024). Visit Kehi Shrine and Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse. Connect to Thunderbird Limited Express toward Kyoto/Osaka. Try local seafood and sweet shrimp.

Stopped at Tsuruga Station during our trip from Nagano to Osaka. This station is clean, modern, and well-organized with smooth train transfers. The station area has convenient shops, cafés, and souvenir stores featuring local specialties. Easy to navigate and comfortable for a short stop or transit break 👍

Kehi no Matsubara, located on Tsuruga Bay, is a picturesque area featuring a stunning contrast of white sand beaches and lush green pine trees. This expansive pine grove stretches over a kilometer along the beach, offering a tranquil atmosphere and beautiful ocean views. In addition to hiking through the oceanside forest, visitors can enjoy swimming off the sandy expanse during the summer months.

Kehi Jingu Shrine, an 8th-century shrine in Tsuruga, Japan, is famous for its striking red torii gate and sacred spring. The shrine hosts an annual float parade and is a popular attraction in the area. Visitors can also explore other nearby sights such as the Shibata-shi-teien Garden, red brick storehouses for storing 'konbu,' and Mt. Ohara-yama with its Saifuku-ji Temple offering beautiful autumn scenery.
The shrine gate is one of the biggest in the region. Major religious center in the city. There's a fountain with water which prolongs your health and life.
Jason H — Google review
A beautiful Jingu (shrine) in Tsuruga now even more accessible due to the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension. It's a really old shrine with some special water and other attributes like one of the three largest Torri gates in Japan.

Another shrine ⛩️ , another place to visit and admire the style of the buildings , some nice trees and fish 🐟 here 😀
Stephen M — Google review
A very beautiful, tranquil spiritual place set amongst tall trees which add to its peaceful surroundings, there’s a water fountain here that you can sprinkle on your hands and is said to bring you good health and fortune-I took a bath in it (just kidding). I was reading that the original shrine has been around since 692AD but the site was destroyed during the bombings of WW2 this was late rebuilt in 1945, the Tori Gate was originally built in 1902 and survived the devastation of WW2, I hope this spiritual place is around for a very long time to come.
Mark ( — Google review
This shrine is really worth a visit, the torii gate is very majestic and a significant one as one of the 3 major wooden torii gate in Japan. It remains really well maintained too. Practically no other visitors when we visited which adds to the serenity of the place once you enter.

Visited Kehi Jungu Shrine on a snowy day.. The shrine is a major cultural site and one of the three major wooden torii gates in Japan (alongside Kasuga-Taisha in Nara and Itsukushima Jinja in Hiroshima).. and don’t forget the Longevity Water to pray for good health 😊

Soba noodle shop
Amano is a popular dining spot located near Tsuruga Station, offering a variety of noodle dishes. The stand-up style soba restaurant provides a unique experience where customers order directly from the store clerk and receive their food after payment. The tempura soba is highly recommended, with chewy noodles and flavorful soup. Another nearby udon restaurant offers Nikutama Udon at an affordable price with quick service.
(Translated by Google) I like station soba, so I looked into it and found out that there was one near Tsuruga Station, so I went there. Kehi Soba Udon I ate a large serving of grated soba noodles at Amano. The soba was from Hokuriku, and it was browner in color than regular soba and had more elasticity than regular soba, so it went down easily and was delicious. The soup stock also uses kelp from Tsuruga, which has a unique sweetness, and the combination of grated daikon radish and bonito flakes makes it a very large serving, so it's great that you can eat it quickly and easily. The sweetness of the soup stock is really my favorite flavor. The shop was also very clean.

(Translated by Google) Our tour of Fukui Prefecture is over! I wanted a light meal before catching the Shinkansen, so I stopped by this place inside Tsuruga Station. It's a cash-only restaurant with no waiting. It's been years since I've been to a stand-up udon restaurant. I'm so happy that the prices are so reasonably priced. I ordered the Nikutama Udon, which was served super-fast, in just 2 minutes. It's a simple udon noodle dish with a distinctive crunchy texture. I love the strong home-cooked flavor. The sweet and spicy beef was also delicious. Thank you for the meal!

(Translated by Google) I love meat udon and herring soba. The herring from the Nishin Soba near the station the day before was not the best, but the worst, but the candied herring at this restaurant was boneless and had plenty of flavor, so it was delicious. The taste of soba and soup is good enough if you are eating it while standing. However, as others have written, this restaurant is built like an eel bed, and ordering and payment are done at the back, making it difficult to move around. It's a shame that they couldn't have improved the layout a little more😭 (Original)

(Translated by Google) This is a stand-up soba restaurant located in Orpark, a community facility at Tsuruga Station. It's located outside the west exit ticket gate. It's so small you might want to ask, "Why is it so small?" Oboro soba: 400 yen. The noodles are thick. Considering it's a stand-up restaurant, the lack of firmness is understandable. But the light Kansai-style broth is complemented by the salty, savory flavor of the oboro kelp, creating an exquisite accent. Truly a Tsuruga specialty. It was delicious. On my way back from Maizuru, I remembered the taste and got off the train halfway to have it again. This was my second time having oboro soba. This time, I sprinkled a moderate amount of chili pepper on top. It was even more delicious.

Tenten, an izakaya restaurant, receives rave reviews for its delectable food and warm hospitality. Customers are drawn to this local establishment due to the freshness of their ingredients, exquisite cooking techniques, and impressive range of sake options. The attentive staff adds to the overall experience with their polite demeanor and heartfelt customer service. Though not comparable to high-end restaurants in sophistication, Tenten exudes a cozy atmosphere that makes diners feel at ease.
I was here 17:30 to have my dinner. It was empty and around 18:30 it’s almost full. Roughly have 10seats downstairs, I guess there’s table upstairs too? The owner 川畑San, he is a very welcoming person 🥰 There’s no English menu but I watched what other Japanese order. Also I ordered “Omakase” Chef recommends. If you’re a western looking tourist don’t even bother to come here. We went there around the 20.30, and even if the place was almost empty, we were told “food is finished”. As I closed the door, I heard the owner and his costumer laughing behind our backs. Very unpleasant experience, at least be honest and tell people you don’t accept them because of where they come from, instead of lying and then laughing behind their backs. That is not polite. That is offensive.

(Translated by Google) We used this restaurant for a Sunday lunch for 10 family members after a memorial service. We had the room on the first floor reserved for us, so we were able to spend the time without any worries. Each dish was carefully prepared and very delicious, and my 86-year-old mother was very pleased. We increased the steak from 100g to 200g in the "Nosaka with Sashimi" course. I thought it was a lot, but everyone was very satisfied with the delicious meat. We ate everything up to the final dessert. It was also helpful that they were able to accommodate our second son, a university student who eats a lot, for a second helping of rice. It was a wonderful time with all the family smiling. We are grateful to all the staff. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the 30-minute delay in starting. Thank you very much for all your help. We would like to use this restaurant again. (Translated by Google) It was a very enjoyable lunch time. The chef cooked your exclusive set meal in front of you, and you quietly enjoyed the red wine (actually it was grape juice 🤣 I’m going to drive) paired with the steak. The appetizers were fragrant and simple, which made the taste buds wait for the meal. The caramelized Wakasa beef still retained a lot of gravy, and a little fresh mustard was added to balance its fatty and meaty flavor 😋 Finally, the butter garlic rice was fragrant and not greasy, and it was very satisfying. The store also has a famous after-meal tea area with soft sofas, elegant furnishings and fine products to give you a perfect ending to your meal while enjoying tea. (When I was asked if I was a foreigner during checkout, they gave me cookies as a gift after a brief exchange 😳Thank you for your hospitality🤗) (Original)

The taste was good, as you would expect from a chain restaurant, but I was disappointed that the staff was a little nervous, probably because they were busy. Since I was alone, there was an empty table seat, but I was forced to sit at the counter, but there was a partition to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but at my seat I was only given a menu, chopsticks, and a set of seasonings. I didn't have any, and the staff didn't take it for me, so I ended up taking it from the seat next to me through the partition, and I thought about going home. For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Kanegasaki Castle Ruins. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse, originally a storage facility from 1905, now hosts an expansive diorama showcasing the city's history as a transport hub. The warehouse also houses the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum, which commemorates Tsuruga Port's early history and its significant role in aiding Jewish refugees during World War II. This museum recounts the remarkable story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who saved 6,000 Jewish lives by issuing visas while stationed in Lithuania.
Wasn't sure what might cost 400 yen there but the diorama and the narration videos were amazing! There's a small stamp rally where you overlap stamps and it creates a full picture.

Entering from the garden side, the first of the two warehouses contains a few restaurants and a souvenir shop. Then, through the annex into the second building, you can buy a ticket into the warehouse that contains a moving diorama that depicts Tsuruga and its surrounding area. I came in very early (10am) on a Monday, and there wasn't any holiday, so I was pretty much alone, and during my stay, only five other people came in. From my understanding and the video presentations, the diorama depicts the town as it was about 100 years ago. While the videos were obviously aimed toward children, the exhibit can be appreciated by adults too! There is a second floor balcony that makes it easier to see the diorama in full, but I recommend being on the ground floor for the videos.

The Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum commemorates the compassionate history of Tsuruga as a safe haven for those in need. It pays tribute to Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese vice-consul in Lithuania, who valiantly aided thousands of Jewish refugees during World War II. The museum showcases a collection of photographs and documents that narrate the remarkable stories of Polish orphans and Jewish refugees who found solace in Tsuruga.

Tsuruga has been a port town since long time ago. Initially for trade with other parts of Japan and later as a starting point to travel to Vladivostok to catch the trans siberia express. In the 1920’s when Poland was invaded, Tsuruga saw the arrival of about 800 Polish orphans who found safe haven in Japan before they were repatriated a few years later. Then in 1940 Tsuruga acted as the transit port for about 2000 mainly Polish Jews who fled Germany for America and beyond. Very interesting piece of history. During our visit a descendant of one of the refugees traveled from afar to pay tribute. Well worth a visit.

I had been waiting for the opening of the new Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum after I had visited Kanaus in 2019. Unfortunately Covid prevented me from visiting it n 2020 when the Museum was opened, just as many witnesses and their families the museum talks about. Despite Japan is often described as a closed society and even xenophobic (which are untrue), the museum tells that it’s not the case, that over the decades Japan and the Japanese people helped and welcomed those in need very badly with open arms. If something I want the museum to do more, that would be to cooperate and illustrate more informations about Poland, Lithuania, and any other the country where Tsuruga and the people used to help.

(Translated by Google) This was my first visit, but one day is not enough. Not to mention the vast area around Tsuruga Port that has been turned into a park, there are many things to see, so it is impossible to see everything in just one day. There are several parking lots, so it is better to use them depending on your purpose. If I were to roughly divide it into the cape area with Kanegasaki Castle and the port area with the Red Brick Warehouse, I guess it's something like that. In any case, it is a great location with a large park near the sea that is pleasant and allows you to see various ships up close. If you feel like it, you can spend the whole day here from morning to night. Although, as I said at the beginning, it is not an area that can be seen in one day. It may be a very simple way of saying it, but this is a place that you will want to come back to again and again.

(Translated by Google) This shrine, which prays for overcoming difficulties and romantic success, is renowned for its several historical sites located on the site of Kanezaki Castle and its cherry blossom season in spring. Due to its low attendance, visiting outside of cherry blossom season allows for a tranquil and sacred experience. Those with the energy to ascend to the Tenkai Plaza Observatory at the highest point will be rewarded with stunning views of the azure Tsuruga Bay. To reach Kanezakigu Shrine, take the Tsuruga Shuttle Bus. After disembarking at Kanezakigu Shrine, ascend the stone steps leading up to the shrine. While the steps appear numerous at first glance, they are not long or steep, reaching Kanezakigu Shrine in about five minutes. However, the Tsuruga Shuttle Bus runs infrequently to Kanezakigu Shrine, so it's recommended to check schedules or arrive by car or bicycle. Kanazakigu Shrine is built on the hillside above the ruins of Kanezaki Castle. It deifies Prince Tsuneyoshi and his brother Prince Tsuneyoshi, who died defending Kanezaki Castle during the 14th-century Nanboku-chō period. The shrine was built in 1890 (Meiji 23). Due to the love story of Prince Takarasu and his wife, as well as the flower exchange festival custom that began in the 1900s, Kanezaki Castle is also known as "Koi-no-Miya." Kanazaki Castle is also the famous battlefield where Toyotomi Hideyoshi completed the Battle of Kanezaki during the Warring States Period. During the Warring States Period, Oda Nobunaga led his army to attack the Asakura clan. Due to the betrayal of his brother-in-law, Asai Nagamasa, he was trapped between the Asai and Asakura armies. Nobunaga's sister, Oichi, filled a cloth bag with red beans, tied the ends with a knot, and sent it to Nobunaga's camp, signaling the impending danger. Nobunaga, realizing the implication, arranged for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, then still known as Kinoshita Tokichiro, to cover the rearguard, completing the nearly impossible retreat. Ultimately, he defeated the enemy at the subsequent Battle of Anegawa and averted the danger. Thus, Kanezaki Palace has become a symbol of good fortune, symbolizing overcoming adversity. During the flowering season, the flower exchange path next to the main shrine of Kanezaki Palace is filled with over 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, and a flower exchange festival is held. During the Meiji era, couples visiting Kanezaki Palace for cherry blossom viewing would whisper, "Would you like to exchange flowers?" ("花換えましょう") and exchange a cherry blossom sprig as a token of affection, earning Kanezaki Palace its nickname, "Love Palace." Continuing further up the Flower Exchange Path, you can follow the hiking trail to visit Ogazaki, the ruins of Kanezaki Castle, the tomb of Prince Takayoshi, the Kanezaki battlefield, and the highest point, the Tenkai Hirokai Observatory. The 10-15 minute walk from the Flower Exchange Path takes you to the Tenkai Hirokai Observatory, where the Tsukimi-goden of Kanezaki Castle once stood, offering sweeping views of Tsuruga Bay. Kanegasaki Castle Ruins, located just outside the city, offer a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The castle has a rich history, including its involvement in the fierce battles between Ashikaga Takauji, Imperial Emperor Takayoshi, and the Nitta clan. It was also a key location in Oda Nobunaga's retreat and his conflict with Yoshisada Nitta.

Can't find any historical remnants but sign posts. After a long climb, the view at the seafront cliff should have been great. Unfortunately, a nearby cement factory greets you with constant noise and filthy air.

Beautiful place with natural beauty. If you are health consistence must visit coz it takes about 30-45 min to reach at the top. May be good for small hiking. At the top you can see the entire bay however the peak was not as beautiful as I expected.

(Translated by Google) This castle ruins is located on a small mountain overlooking Tsuruga Bay. Although there are few remains that remind us of those days, Tsuruga Bay can be seen from the Tsukimi Goten Ruins, but the slope to get there was quite steep and tiring. It is known as an old battlefield where Lord Yoshisada Nitta, who protected the princes Tsuneyoshi and Takayoshi, fought against the Ashikaga army during the period of the Northern and Southern Courts, and during the Warring States period, it is also famous as the site of a fierce battle where Lord Akechi Mitsuhide and Lord Hideyoshi Hashiba served as a desperate lord and saved the day at the ``Kanagasaki Retreat'', where Lord Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by Lord Azai Nagamasa during the attack on Echizen Asakura and was forced to make a desperate retreat. (Translated by Google) I finally got to visit after 30 years. Long ago, when I traveled around Fukui, I made it to Tsuruga on my last day, but didn't have enough time. Looking out at Kanegasaki from Kehi no Matsubara, I vowed to definitely visit next time. It's been years since then. Finally! Despite its quiet appearance, this castle has been the site of two historically significant events. It brought back many emotions. However, what bothered me most this time was that, despite its location jutting out into the sea, it doesn't appear to have any maritime base facades. Perhaps a dock or something like that has disappeared due to changes in the terrain. Perhaps the sea once extended all the way to the area around Konzenji Temple, which is now the entrance. Even so, it seems appropriate to have had a side enclosure, a descending path, and a hideout for boats at the back, around Tsukimi Goten. Kehi Taisha Shrine is said to be dedicated to the god of navigation, so I thought it had influence on the sea as well, but perhaps that influence wasn't direct. This prompted me to consider this issue in comparison with Ise Grand Shrine, which was built around the same time (an issue). Also, what was impressive about the castle was that there were about three layers of moats facing the Tezutsuyama Castle side. I wonder if this was an idea of the Asakura clan. Its ruins almost overlap with the present-day shrine of Kanezaki Palace. Legend has it that Taira no Michimori first built the castle during the Genpei War to fight against Kiso Yoshinaka. Warring States enthusiasts will want to visit the Battle of Kanezaki, where Toyotomi Hideyoshi became famous. The Taiheiki records that the castle faced the sea on three sides, with steep cliffs and smooth rock formations, demonstrating that Kanezaki Castle was a natural fortress built to the terrain and possessing exceptional defensive capabilities. The remains of the Tsukimi Palace (Honmaru), the remains of the wooden doors, the Uzumakiwa Gate, and the Horikiri Gate can be seen. The entire castle can be reached by following the flower-swept path up the hiking trail from Kanezaki Palace. The highest point, the Tenkai Plaza Observatory, offers a stunning bird's-eye view of Tsuruga Bay. The Tsuruga Shuttle Bus takes you to Kanezaki Castle and Kanezaki Shrine. After getting off at Kanezaki Shrine, climb the stone steps along the approach road for about five minutes to reach Kanezaki Shrine. The Tsuruga Shuttle Bus runs infrequently to Kanezaki Shrine, so it's best to check schedules in advance or arrive by car or bicycle. Italian restaurant
The Italian restaurant Sogno Poli, previously located in Mikuni, has now relocated to a new space. The former store had the appearance of a renovated villa and was highly regarded. The new location exudes a clean and modern ambiance, creating an appealing urban atmosphere. Despite visiting for the first time, there was no need to endure long waits during lunch hours on weekends due to the moderate crowd size.

I am an experienced traveller but this was the very first time in all my life that I paid a considerable money for a tiny slice of cake. The waitress proposed us a "set" with coffee ☕ and a "cake" for a lump-sum price (1200 yen). When the two sets arrived we were perplexed if it was a joke or a lack of respect to us. We have never seen such tiny quantities. Each slice of these "cakes" was 3 centimeter per 7 centimeter. In all my life i have never seen such a dwarf cake. We were outraged and we felt offended. We paid and left. When i went out of the building of the red Bricks myself I felt distressed and infinitely sad when looking at the port of this city (I read the story of the military bombings that destroyed much of this city) and I remembered the movie "Grave of the Fireflies" with the story of the two children during the war. They were hard years and food was scarce and was rationed and limited and distributed in small quantities.

Cafe
During spring break, a group of three adults with children visited Red Brick Cafe at 11 o'clock on weekdays. They intended to order crab and tomato cream pasta but had to settle for mentaiko pasta as the crab was unavailable. The wife opted for SABA pasta, while their son chose Bolognese. Surprisingly, there was no waiting time, allowing them to share the wife's delightful mackerel dish called Umai Umai.

Seafood restaurant
(Ikesunokoura) is a popular seafood restaurant located on the first floor of the red brick warehouse. The cozy and clean interior, along with friendly staff, creates a welcoming atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are greeted by enthusiastic young staff. The highlight of the restaurant is the large fish tank in the center, adding to the lively ambiance.
Although they specialize in seafood -- and the tanks in the store proclaim it's freshness -- they also have sauce katsudon, the local specialty. The prices are a bit higher here, possibly because it's in a tourist area, but we thought the portion sizes justified it. The katsudon set had three cutlets in a large bowl of rice with soup, pickles, and sides. The atka mackerel was big, too, and a steal at 1000 yen (soup and rice extra). Definitely ate our fill here.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Seafood atom Wakaba Tsuruga shop is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant with an open kitchen that specializes in offering fresh market options. During the first visit, customers are served two types of miso soup, namely freshwater clam and shrimp, which can be replaced for free. The sushi selection at this establishment is both essential and delicious. The variety surprised patrons, as it included tasty gully dishes.
Always busy place and it deserves it. when I travel this area always keep it on my way. A bit expensive then chain sushi restaurants but portions are bigger and test is much better. There are some haters who have no sense of taste commented negative about this restaurant. They must go and eat frozen fish in chain sushi restaurant.

Kaisen Atom took over Tokubei Sushi in 1972 and moved its head office to Fukui City. It operates nine outlets in Fukui Prefecture under the ColloWide umbrella. The price range is slightly higher, from a low of 120 yen to a high of 740 yen. The Tsuruga Wakaba branch offers seasonal items such as Sanma and Fukui salmon. The freshness of the fish and careful workmanship are highly regarded. The Atom brand stays in Fukui Prefecture and is valued as a local individuality.

(Translated by Google) I went to Kaisen Atom Tsuruga Wakaba Branch, which was recommended to me by a colleague and is said to be delicious, for the first time from Shiga Prefecture. It took 1 hour and 50 minutes on the local roads. I arrived at 11:05, and since the restaurant opens at 11:00, I thought I would be the first in line, but there were already customers there. I registered at the ticket machine, and the staff immediately guided me to my seat. They explained how to order on the panel and how to self-serve water, tea, and miso soup. The self-service miso soup is not available at the sushi restaurant I usually go to. I went to the miso soup corner wondering what it was like, and they had shrimp soup and clam soup ready. I ordered shrimp soup for my wife first, opened the lid of the corner, dipped a ladle in, and asked if I should mix the ingredients. When I mixed it lightly, shrimp started dancing in the soup. What on earth is this? Feeling nervous, I poured a small bowl before other customers arrived. Next, I poured myself some clam soup without adding any toppings. I returned to my seat and handed the shrimp soup to my wife, who complained that it had too much shrimp in it. It can't be helped, it's the restaurant's fault for having too many toppings. I prepared some tea and finally looked at the display. I ordered the seasonal nigiri chawanmushi. As rumored, the toppings were big and very delicious. There were times when I thought, "Why go all the way to Fukui just to eat conveyor belt sushi...?" If you're in Shiga and are unsure what to eat after reading this review, I recommend this restaurant. Lastly, my wife said she won't be eating shrimp for a while. (Translated by Google) It was extremely delicious. As expected from Fukui Prefecture. I'm from Osaka, but I would have to pay a considerable amount to eat sushi of this quality. I think the people of Fukui Prefecture are incredibly lucky to be able to casually eat sushi of this freshness at this price on a regular basis. I think it would easily cost 2-3 pieces, and there aren't many places where you can eat it anyway. What's more, they also offer two types of miso soup for free, which is just unbelievable. The other day I had fish soup at a popular sushi restaurant (non-conveyor belt) in Umeda, Osaka, and it was actually not as tasty as the free fish soup here. And it cost 680 yen. At Atom, it's free. Just unbelievable. I've said it many times before, but the people of Tsuruga are incredibly lucky.

The machine at the back is available in different languages and is easy to use. I didn't want to wait too long, so I didn't specify a specific seat. Luckily, I was seated immediately after waiting, without having to wait. The ordering tablet after we were seated only has instructions in Japanese. I can speak Japanese, so it's pretty easy to use, and you can also order by looking at pictures. The nigiri sushi comes with rice size and the option to add wasabi. You can also pick up the sushi from the conveyor belt. Prices are clearly marked based on the color of the plate. Hot tea and ginger are provided at the table. Slices and ice cubes are available on your own. The six-piece tuna nigiri ordered on a flatbed was delicious. The six pieces were priced, but additional items were not. The chef served the sushi on white plates, mistaking them for the same price. Upon checking out, I realized the prices were different, not the white plates. Fortunately, the details were clear, and the number of plates was correct. The checkout process was also varied, making it convenient for international tourists. The ingredients were fresh and delicious, but the tofu sushi was a bit dry. Unlike Taiwanese tofu sushi, which tends to be more moist. There is only one restroom, so the wait time can be a bit long. The meal for three people cost 12,155 yen, or 4,052 yen per person. (Translated by Google) I have a rule that if I find a conveyor belt sushi restaurant that has managed to survive in the countryside, I stop by this one as it caught my eye. The recommended menu item was my favorite striped jack, so I ordered it straight away...huh? Is this striped jack? It looked pale and bloody, which was a real shame. There wasn't anything particularly noteworthy in the toppings, so I left after three plates of the assorted platter. The elderly man who seemed to be in charge of the dining area was furious with the staff who were just standing there, and the part-timers were giving part-timers customer service training, so they weren't paying any attention to the customers at all, so I had no idea why it was so busy. I found out later that it was an Atom Boy related store that was acquired by Colowide. I guess it's only hanging on by a thread because it sources its own ingredients. Or it's just a matter of the level of fish-eating ability of the people of Fukui Prefecture. If that's the case, Sushiro is tastier lol (Original)

I guess that's because I had no idea how long the wait would be. If I'd known from the start that there would be an hour and a half wait, I would have gone somewhere else. My expectations were high as it's a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant in a seaside town, but while it's much better than the major chains, the taste was just so-so. The toppings vary, and the king salmon set wasn't very tasty. The seared and marinated flounder was tasty. The service was also a bit lackluster. They were always busy and seemed short on time. There was a sense of imbalance, as if the chefs and dining staff didn't have a solid operational structure. The parking lot was small, and many people were waiting in their cars. As a beach lover me and my family always makes a point that every summer we went and this 1 is one of the best by far when it comes to cleanliness, family friendly, no noise and relaxation comes. The parking is 2000yen and you can do barbeque as long as you keep it clean afterwards. Snorkeling is also good, lots of fishes that you can enjoy to see. I can't recommend this place enough. Every good review isn't always perfect. If there's a good side, there's also cons... The parking is near at the beach but there's 1 entrance only and it's a narrow stairs going down. If you have lots of things to bring, make sure you got the muscles to do it. The toilet... Hmmm bearable, 1 out of 10 I'll give it a 4.

Saifukuji, a Buddhist temple established in 1368 AD, belongs to the Chinzei sect of the Jodo sect. Its rich historical significance is intertwined with both the Imperial Family and the Tokugawa family. This ancient temple is renowned for its captivating autumn foliage, which transforms it into a mesmerizing sight. The Miedo Hall and Shoin Garden housed within this esteemed site offer visitors an opportunity to explore its beauty; however, an admission fee of 300 yen is required.
(Translated by Google) I think this is an irresistible place for people who like this kind of thing. However, there seems to be a lot of repair work, so there may be construction going on somewhere. What time of the year is best? The autumn leaves are of course beautiful, but the spring and winter seasons are also quite atmospheric. This year I visited during the hydrangea season. I think I'll come see the snowy scenery next time.

(Translated by Google) The official name is ``Oharazan Myokein Saifukuji Jodo Sect Chinsei School''. As it is a temple under the direct control of the Tokugawa family, it is a very noble temple with the name ``Hiderei''. ``Mieido'', ``Shishukoryo'', ``Amidado'', and ``Shoin'' have all been designated as important national monuments, and among them, Amidado is said to be the oldest building in Tsuruga City. . It is also said that this building was relocated from Ichijodani by the Asakura clan. Although it has the atmosphere of a village temple, when you pass through the main gate (designated cultural property), you will see the large Sanmon gate, and the imposing appearance of Mieido that appears behind it is truly a sight to behold. The crest of a hollyhock visible on the roof gives a sense of the high status of this temple. I paid an admission fee of 300 yen to enter the study hall, and the view of the building from there was spectacular. The garden (a nationally designated scenic spot) was also worth seeing. However, it is currently under renovation, and the scaffolding that has been erected has dampened the excitement. I just hope it gets repaired soon. The parking lot cannot be described as spacious. If there are 10 cars parked, it will be full, so it is likely to be crowded during the peak season.

The building was originally the head office of the Owada Bank, which was completed in 1927. After that, it became the Sanwa Bank Tsuruga Branch and then the Fukui Bank Tsuruga Port Branch, before being donated to Tsuruga City in 1977. In 1978, it became the Tsuruga City History and Folklore Museum. The building has three floors above ground and one below, and many traces of the bank's past remain, so it's worth visiting just to see them. The exhibits are related to each era of Tsuruga City, and I found it very refreshing to learn that it developed as a transportation hub connecting the Hokuriku region and the Kinai region, which I had no previous knowledge of. Well, this time I came to see the exhibition of the Japan Crossing Canal Plan. I was impressed that so many things were displayed from materials that were so scarce. Explanations were added for each period, and the grand plan gave me the illusion that it was a Japanese version of a mini-Silk Road.In the end, the story ended with the appearance of Liberal Democratic Party Vice President Tommutsu Ohno. I felt that changes in vehicles and the economy were casting a variety of shadows on this plan. I hope that these materials will be permanently displayed like the Lake Biwa Canal Memorial Museum. The iced cafe au lait was apparently diluted with soy milk, so it didn't taste milky, but I didn't really get the soy milk flavor either. The peach shortcake was delicious, with plenty of fresh cream, a perfect match with the tartness of the peach. 😋 Since I ended up monopolizing a four-person table, I felt sorry for the customers who would come in after the restaurant was full, so I hurriedly ate my food and left the restaurant. I accidentally left my bag behind, and a staff member ran over to bring it to me. I apologize for the inconvenience in this heat. The interior is spacious and cool, with a traditional Japanese-style atmosphere that's very relaxing.

Udon noodle restaurant
Marugame Seimen Tsuruga is a delightful spot that truly shines when you enjoy your meal on-site. While I often opt for takeout, today’s experience was enhanced by the ambiance of the restaurant. Unfortunately, their popular summer dish, long eggplant udon bento, was sold out. Instead, I savored a delicious gooey chicken with citrus notes alongside sweet potato tempura and a perfectly soft-boiled egg—each bite was heavenly!
(Translated by Google) I recommend the bukkake (spicy topping)... green onions, seaweed, and rice balls 🍙 the ultimate combination (Original)

(Translated by Google) Marugame is located at the north end of Kizaki Street in Kushikawa, Tsuruga City. “Wagamachi Kamaage Udon 47” will start in November. “Dipping soup” that takes advantage of the food culture of each prefecture is available for a limited time and in limited quantities! I went there right after it opened at 11am, but since it was Saturday, it was already full...even though it was raining. For some reason, there were some customers coming out of the store, and I thought maybe the store was closed. Tourist spots such as ``Kehi no Matsubara'' and ``Nihonkai Sakana Town'' are nearby, so cars with Chukyo and Shiga license plates were also conspicuous. Fukui prefecture's dipping sauce is "Mackerel curry dipping soup." In the photo on the poster, there is a lot of mackerel meat in it, but in reality it is a shabby soup with almost no ingredients. At first I could feel the flavor of mackerel, but once I got used to it, I couldn't tell. I could feel the flavor and sourness of the tomatoes. ``Comes with a bite of rice'', about half a mouthful in a small bowl. I thought it was rice to be offered on a Buddhist altar, but it was just the right seasoning when added to the dipping sauce. Well, it was delicious, but considering the performance, the gap with the photo, and the price, I guess I was disappointed.

(Translated by Google) I often get takeout, but today I decided to try it, and it's even more delicious when eaten on site. It's a shame that the summer staple, the long eggplant udon bento, is sold out and I can't get it. 😭 Today I'm having gooey chicken with a citrus aroma, sweet potato tempura, and a soft-boiled egg. The tempura is also delicious.

(Translated by Google) I ate meat bukkake. I don't know because I haven't compared it to other stores, but it seemed too thick to me, so I added hot and cold water and adjusted it to my liking. It tasted just right, so I kind of regret that I should have made it from the beginning. The inside of the store was nice and clean.

(Translated by Google) Since it was early in the evening, I entered the store without lining up. Choose fox udon, Inari sushi, fried egg, and maitake mushroom tempura It may be unavoidable if it's a busy time! ! I think it would be better to clean tables and replenish seasonings when there are fewer customers. The juice that splattered on the partition remains as it is, and when I eat it, it's right in front of me, so I can't feel good eating. The table was still covered in tempura crumbs and soup, and even when the waiter walked by, he didn't seem to care and just ignored it. 2 stars due to poor hygiene. The udon was delicious🙆 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I wonder if it's the effect of high prices, but I'm surprised at the gap between the price and the quality of tempura. Is the fried chikuwa seaweed a joke? I understand that it's difficult to run a business, but I just can't get it. I thought the udon had gotten worse after a while because of the "Reron Reron" sound, but this time it was delicious. I wonder if it had something to do with the fact that people in colored costumes were boiling it.
