Kaiyuan Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple complex from the Tang dynasty, featuring twin stone pagodas and preserved scriptures. It is one of the top attractions in Quanzhou, along with other historical sites like East and West pagodas, Confucius Temple, Queen of Heaven Palace, Luoyang Bridge, and Anping Bridge. The city also boasts numerous museums showcasing various aspects of history and culture.
Entrance is set on a busy street. At the time of my visit in January 2025, there was no tickets required, or any additional fee once you enter the grounds. Try to do some research before arriving, or you will miss out on a lot. Surrounding the temple, there are several food streets that are very unique to visit. If you're a vegetarian, you will struggle. During the busy season, be patient as there will be a lot of people here. Couple of interesting coffee shops around if you're able to find it. Allow about 3 hours for your visit, if not longer.

Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple, China was built in year 685 during Tang Dynasty, with a history of over 1300 years. Prominent landmarks and must-visit are the 2 pagodas, Renshou and Zhenguo Pagodas.

Kaiyuan Temple (开元寺), the largest Buddhist temple complex in Fujian Province, built in 686 AD in Tang Dynasty is about 1,400 years old. Blending diverse cultures and architectural styles, it's a vital witness to Quanzhou's status as the "Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China". Do check out the huge, centuries old banyan trees flanking the courtyard. The East and West Stone Pagodas within the temple grounds, respectively Zhenguo 镇国塔and Renshou仁寿, are the tallest pair of stone towers in China. Zhenguo pagoda in particular, inspired the filming location of the mega hit game Black Myth: Wukong.

An ancient temple with a rich history, featuring a solemn Buddha hall where many people come to offer incense, pray, and seek blessings. Admission is free, but photography is not allowed in the Buddha hall. Visitors are kindly requested to follow the rules.

This is a special buddhist temple embodying a family shrine in QuanZhou, Fujian province. One will be better off taking a 1-day trip to QuanZhou via a local travel agent, who will bundle places of interest nearby, including a decent lunch.
DENNIS T — Google review
The Kaiyuan Temple (开元寺) is a renowned Buddhist temple located in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. It is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist temples in the region, with a rich history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The temple is also famous for being one of the largest and most well-preserved Buddhist complexes in China. There are Hindu caving and pillars in the temple architecture. The Temple is home to an intriguing historical artifact—a Song Dynasty ship, which is preserved on the temple premises. This ship is not only a remarkable find in itself but also a significant representation of the maritime history of Quanzhou during the Song Dynasty.

Qingjing Mosque, also known as the Ashab Mosque, is a historical gem located in Quanzhou. Built during the Song Dynasty, it is one of the oldest mosques in China, showcasing stunning Islamic architecture influenced by Middle Eastern styles. The stonework and intricate carvings are fascinating, reflecting the ancient maritime connections of the Silk Road. Though the mosque no longer functions as an active place of worship, it serves as a museum and cultural site. The tranquil atmosphere and historical artifacts make it a great spot for those interested in history, religion, or architecture. The mosque is well-maintained, with informative displays that detail its history and significance. It's a peaceful retreat in the bustling city, and its location near other cultural sites makes it convenient for a day of exploration. Definitely worth a visit!

(Translated by Google) Tianhou Temple in Quanzhou is one of the most important temples in Mazu belief, but its visit value is not that high for non-believers. "Quanzhou Fu Zhi·Volume 24 Magazine" written by Wanli of the Ming Dynasty records that "Tianfei Palace is located in Deji Gate of the county town. Shen's original surname is Lin. He lived on Meizhou Island in Puyang for a long time. His father Lin Yuan is also the sixth daughter of Tianfei. She was born with auspicious light and fragrance, and could always ride on a mat to cross the sea. She often traveled to the islands on clouds. People called her Dragon Girl. She ascended to heaven on September 29, the fourth year of Yongxi reign in Song Dynasty. Later generations saw Zhu Yi flying on the water, and a temple was erected in the Heavenly Palace. Xishan was given the title of Shunji. The palace was built in Quanzhou starting from Xu Shichang, a native of the Song Dynasty and Qingyuan Dynasty. At that time, Luo City was still in the Zhennan Bridge, but the palace was located on Wupu, where the two streams of the Sun River met, and there were prayers. Zhe Ying. Today, Dejimen is in its prime. In the fifth year of Yongle reign, the Western eunuch Zheng He ordered the Fujian governor to re-open it, and the palace was honored." Starting from the Republic of China, the Tianhou Palace lasted for 5 and 60 years and was used as the school building of Quanzhou Huiming Middle School (now Quanzhou No. 7 Middle School). Even the most important Mazu statue was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. For a period of time, there were temples but no gods. Most of the Tianhou Temple in Quanzhou we visited today were rebuilt in modern times with donations from Taiwanese believers/fenling temples. Its glorious history and epic past are invisible to us.

Situated on the banks of the Jinjiang River south of Quanzhou City, a popular hub for foreign ships, it is one of the oldest and largest existing Mazu temples on China's southeastern coast, branching off from the Putian and Meizhou Mazu Ancestral Temples. It is said that Master Hongyi originally planned to go to Nanyang, but when passing through Quanzhou, he was persuaded to stay here, and finally passed away here. Chengtian Temple, also known as Yuetai Chengtian Temple, was first built in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It was repaired many times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Most of the current buildings are from that time and are currently well preserved. This place is obviously not as famous as Kaiyuan Temple, so there are a lot less people here, but it makes people feel more peaceful and peaceful. The architecture of the temple is also a typical Minnan style, which is very charming. It would be a great pity not to come here when you come to Quanzhou.
