GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort is located in Niigata Prefecture, offering a variety of scenic trails for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has its own bullet train station, making it easily accessible from Tokyo Station. With 15 runs and nine lifts, it provides options for skiers of all levels. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the spa area with an onsen and unisex swimming pool.
Went for a day trip from Tokyo during the start-of-spring public holiday. Quite a few trains were nearly complete but could reserve still a place a day in advance. Once at the last stop of Gala, all was very well organised. Bought ski pass in 5 minutes, despite a full train decending just upstairs from the train station. Then ordered online at a kiosk my skis and boots, paid with credit card. Highlighted expert skier but think that related to the settings of the ski bindings, not the skis itself - they were very basic Fischer skis, felt plastic with no stability of edges. Better check for advanced skis if available... Then able to book a cheap locker at another kiosk and drop all stuff and normal shoes. And then take the gondola up, ski sticks you take yourself at exit of top gondola. Very easy all in all! Over 3m of snow, there was a new dump the day before, excellent sun, everything open, the black slopes were not groomed. Very nice for a day!!
Peter C — Google review
This snow/ski resort, is accessible for everyone even you are not doing ski. The ticket price for gondola, not too pricey. But, if you only want to play snow, maybe this is not for you. In fact, you can play snow outside the door near the rental area, with barely no one there. (No need to ride the gondola). There were too many people, and it can be dangerous if you are not aware of the ski-people. Even the parking space was full, and we need to find ourselves a parking spot, 15 minutes walking from the entrance. But still, there are many things to do other than skiing that you can choose. We were so lucky to have a snowfalls! But still, it was a good experience for all of us, especially me, who loves Japan the most.
DIYANA R — Google review
A very ideal ski resort that is accessible via Tokyo. If you are looking for a nearby ski experience near Tokyo, this is the place. Can get very crowded on some parts but there are also some places here that are not crowded. All in all a good place and would recommend.
Josh — Google review
If you’re around Tokyo, if you can squeeze it in on your itinerary, please do. This is an amazing place! Winter Wonderland indeed. We went there around February this year. Be prepared with winter clothes. There are rental gears inside, but you can also bring your own. 🤍
Jeorjie M — Google review
Great ski/snowboard resort for beginners to intermediates. Access from Tokyo’s amazing (walk right off the Shinkansen to the resort, pick up your rental gear, then walk to life and go!) Views are beautiful and slopes are not so crowded on weekdays. Try to cafe which is on the edge of the slopes and is a great spot to take a break.
Eric H — Google review
Lots of fun with family. Rent 2 sledges for a family. We spend 3-4 hours over here. If you wanna play snow. You better rent weather proof suit and rubber boots. Train from Ueno to Gala YUZAWA is convenient and easy. Trip start 8am it takes only 1 hr to arrive at Gala YUZAWA. Buy ticket and equipment rental take around 20-30 mins. Gondola will take around 10-12 mins to get the ski mountain. It’s a good place to visit even though you don’t ski. My kid really like to play here.
Vorapoj T — Google review
We had a good experience at Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort. As soon as we arrived at the station, there were people guiding tourists were to buy tickets. On the same floor, there are counters where you get your gondola and lift tickets. If you won’t be skiing, like us, you just need a gondola ticket and you will be able to go up and down as many times as you want during the day. The ride takes just a few minutes. We had big bag packs and left them at the station because it’s the only place where they have big lockers. We rented moon bikes at the top, they give you a helmet with a camera. When the activity ends, they give you a QR code so you can download your video.
Diosemil S — Google review
GALA is easily accessible via shuttle from Echigo Yuzawa Station at Platform 5 (take the orange line). If you are not a local, don't worry because everything would be available in various languages as well. For example, if you are there to rent anything, forget the fear of being unable to communicate with the staff on what you want including your sizes etc. They have self-selection stations that allows you to pick and choose what you'd like to rent from sets to ala carte if you happen to bring some of your own gear eg. snowboarding wear etc. Prices are very friendly as well, with the snowboarding board, boots and helmet at a friendly 8500 yen, and a half-day, one-day lift ticket at 6500 yen. Be prepared to be greeted by powder snow with a variety of narrow and wide slopes. I was here on a Saturday in January but in the peak afternoon it wasn't that crowded at all on the wide slopes and you could still snowboard comfortably. Be wary though, the slopes may be a little steep for first-timers so do find an area to grasp the basics first. Love the big space, friendly prices and fast services. Cheers GALA!

Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort is an expansive winter destination that caters to all skill levels with its vast network of ski runs, halfpipes for snowboarding and a kids' snow park. The resort boasts a stunning view and numerous restaurants and snack areas for guests to enjoy. While the facilities themselves may appear dated and in need of renovation, they still provide a comfortable stay with buffet options available.
What a wonderful place! This is second time i came here for ski Excellent reception as usual , great view and delicious food. Although the hotel it's a little bit old decor, but still an awesome place to ski. Highly recommended !
Daniel H — Google review
We stayed three nights in January. The room is spacious but a bit old and required renovation. Dinner, bkf and lift pass are included. Food variety is limited (no sushi) but when considering the price, it is as expected. The major problem are the ski ground. There is insufficient signage to show direction, and you dont know what level of slope the liftchair will take you to. There are insufficient chairs for you to change boots. Three persons share one locker with only one key. Overall, the hotel is okay for the price charged but the ski facilities needs some improvement.
Tony C — Google review
90% of the time spent on ski lifts than actually skiing. Not worth it. Our legs and knees hurt because none of the ski lifts have footrest like in Europe. If you’re gonna make people sit on ski lifts all day at least have footrest. Most of the ski lifts also don’t have safety bar. It’s a beautiful resort but it has the strangest layout where to get somewhere you need 2 even 3 connecting ski lifts. Worst part other than the non existent footrest is the fact that the ski lifts are extremely slow. Slowest ski lifts in the world. Better to ski somewhere else.
N K — Google review
Too many ski lifts, felt like a lift resort than a ski resort. Should be renamed to Joetsu Mendokusai. Have to pay for parking and also not many food options even though there are tons of resting cabins.
Yaqub M — Google review
I really liked this huge ski with fantastic view. But the signs were not good enough.
David C — Google review
A good resort for beginners and strong intermediate skiers. Very old school. Lifts tend to be a bit slow, and the layout is quite annoying, with a long transition from the front part of the resort and the rather nice hinterland. Scenery is very pretty, the broad layout providing beautiful views. Showing its age but definitely worth a visit.
Ian B — Google review
Nice ski resort with many slopes which are interconnected to the other resort too. They have night skiing too but only for 2 slopes.
Div — Google review
I'm going to be honest. The resort itself is outdated and in need of a remodel. If that does not bother you, it is a nice stay. The buffets are okay. The snow itself was beautiful and the family had a great time sledding and skiing. The beginner hills kind of lead to advanced ones. Hard to learn if it's busy. Overall a fun trip.

Nestled in the mountains, Panorama Station is a breathtaking destination that seamlessly blends nature and art, making it an absolute must-visit for photography enthusiasts. Just a short 2 hour and 45-minute drive north of Tokyo, this picturesque spot offers stunning seasonal views—from vibrant greens in spring to fiery autumn hues and serene winter landscapes blanketed in snow.
I must stop by place to visit….somehow! It’s only 2h45m drive north of Tokyo!! A day trip, car rental very worth it. It’s in the mountains so not sure if any bus gets up there. Come early in the morning or be patient for photo opportunities. We were lucky occasionally but after that the crowds came! It’s wonderful photo-op!

Avalanches on 5th April damaged the great scene. Hugh piles of mud are everywhere blocking the view of the Kiyotsu Gorge. BTW, JPY200 discount for admission fee is given.

Went here on a tour bus. The area was really beautiful. It was a fun experience walking through the tunnel. Loved the cool air inside too. Enjoyed the art installations the most. It really was fun having your picture taken with those gorgeous backgrounds.
Aibi Y — Google review
A super spectacular view. Just make sure you get there right as it opens or there is a potential of you standing in line for over an hour inside of the tunnel to see the very end. In my opinion it is not worth standing in the line just for a photo opportunity. If you choose not to wait in line you can walk past line to take a picture of the end of the tunnel. There is a shuttle that takes you back and forth to the parking lot on top of the hill however, it is quite the weight in between pick up and drop off.

It's a place to visit if you are close by. Other than few locations to take good social media photos there is not much to do Good place for a family visit

The Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, MonET is a modern exhibition space that features art and illustrations. It has a central pool, a cafe, and onsen baths. The museum is known for hosting events like symposiums and the Echigo Tsumari Art Festival. Visitors can enjoy local natural ingredients in the lunch box offered at the museum's restaurant. Really worth going! And the pool has become a maze at snowing winter~~ I love the art work with endlessly dropping ink and dragonfly-like clocks! Very creative and impressive!

The Tokamachi City Museum TOPPAKU is a must-visit for history and culture enthusiasts. Despite concerns about the lack of English resources, the museum pleasantly surprised visitors by providing English pamphlets and signs. The exhibits were detailed and fascinating, offering insights into life in a snowy region. This well-made museum showcases an abundance of artifacts that beautifully represent the local history, including Jomo stonewares that are surprisingly stunning.
Love the architecture of this museum! All the permanent exhibits are on the ground floor under 3 categories, namely cloth, snow and pottery. There are pottery national treasures in the exhibits, the flame pots. Exhibition is very well done and interactive with very well made miniatures. Entry ticket is 500¥ It is about 15min walk from Tokamachi station. Exhibition has good English translation so that’s a big bonus.
Trotting H — Google review
I visited this Museum as a part of my study tour at Niigata. The Museum is beautifully decorated with 1500 years old flame style potary. The key attractions for me were digital visit of Hunting and gathering age, the family life of Japan in Niigata city during Heavy snowfall and video documentary... Highly recommended for visiting

An excellent museum to visit, it worth the trip. They have many national treasures on display and they are all exquisite. Other displays are interesting too. I wish I had more time here. You can spend all day if you like Jomon era things. As some of the Jomon Doki was on lease and I could not view, I will definitely returning here.

Pottery from the Jomon period, a national treasure of Japan, is on display here. You will be amazed at the artistic sense of the ancient Japanese. There is a lot of pottery on display, and it is a wonderful place to appreciate these objects. In addition, the lifestyle and industry of the region are displayed in an easy-to-understand manner.

Bijin Bayashi Forest is a serene natural area in the mountains of Tokamachi, offering picturesque walking routes through woods known for their stunning autumn leaf colors and winter snowscapes. Accessible by bus or car, this tranquil forest is a perfect spot to relax and immerse yourself in nature's beauty. The bright green leaves of the beech trees create a breathtaking view, contrasting with their dappled grey trunks.
A very calm place among the trees. You can walk freely and take photos as you please. Make sure to not to slip and fall into the pond. It can be a little slippery if it had rained earlier.

Tranquil forest. Worth the drive out here to soak in nature. Also unexpectedly, Great spot for mushroom spotting. Don't eat them. Many are poisonous

This is the furthest I can go by the Google. The snow is like 6m height and you won’t be able to go to there.

A beautiful place worth a visit. Took slightly longer time and more effort to walk around the forest during winter time due to thick snow. But the scenery are quite impressive with all the trees are almost identical in height.

Hoshitouge Terraced Rice Field is a picturesque location featuring tiered, rolling terraces that are perfect for photography. The site is popular among tourists due to its scenic and cultural value. Visitors recommend visiting at sunrise during the right season to witness the misty view depicted in posters.

Beautiful terraced rice fields This place is famous for its beautiful terraced rice fields. From web site Terraced fields are a form of rice field mainly used in mountainous areas. They are built to allow farming on steep slopes and to control water flow. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and cultural value. They are also important for preserving regional specialties and traditional agricultural methods.

I think it must be incredibly beautiful during summer, unfortunately right now as you can see on the picture we don’t see everything due to the snow ! Still a nice little walk to do :)

100% worth coming here, the view of the rice terraces and surrounding hills/mountains is absolutely amazing. I recommend renting an e-bike from Matsudai station and biking here. It's a quick 30-40 minute ride and you can see some nice scenery on the way as well.

My first terraced rice field… I went in summer but would love to see it too on fall or winter (with snow).
Benny K — Google review
One more bucket list completed. I am in love with this beautiful place, what a view of stacked rice fields and mountains just amazing. This please is good to visit in Summer for lush green view to cool your eyes, and in winter for autumn colours.
Ashish T — Google review
Has been my favourite place to come to and photograph the rice terraces. The sunrise here is absolutely magical. However I must say that I am absolutely appalled by how loud and unmannered many japanese are. It's understandable that children are yet to learn to control their voice, but a grown person should be fully capable of doing so. Is it really necessary to shout the obvious to each other over and over disrupting the peaceful moments? Getting in front of the your camera with blatant disregard and then prancing about is seriously obnoxious. Doesn't matter if you token apologise and slightly bow - it doesn't make you well mannered, rather quite the opposite. I see many reviewes of landmarks always mentioning foreigners being loud, however it's japanese who has bad manners themselves in the first place! Shame!!

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Mennya SAKURA offers a unique dining experience where you can customize your ramen and toppings through a convenient vending machine. After making your selections, you'll receive a ticket to hand over to the staff, who will prepare your meal fresh on the spot. The restaurant has recently relocated to a modern and spacious venue that used to be an izakaya. Among their offerings are two special weekday options: tonkotsu and niboshi soy sauce ramen, both of which promise rich flavors.
I am not a fan of Ramen but this I finished the whole thing. Very delicious!
Jane S — Google review
(Translated by Google) First visit in a while. This is the first time since the store moved. I think it used to be like an izakaya, but it has been relocated to a new, spacious and modern place. You can choose from two types of racha, which is available only on weekdays: tonkotsu and niboshi soy sauce. The half-fried rice is also solid and recommended. Noodles that are neatly put together have firm corners and are chewy. The dipping sauce has a nice sweetness and taste of dried sardines. There was no mention of the soup discount on the menu, but when I went to the staff, she brought me the soup. Despite being cheap, gyoza are very delicious with the sweetness of the meat and vegetables and the spices. I highly recommend this. Parking is available in front and behind the store, as well as across the street from the store. I was worried about the young waiter's rude attitude, but the food is delicious and the prices are low, so I would like to come back again.

(Translated by Google) July 2025, Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday Lunch Special Tsukemen... 980 yen While nibbling around town, I visited Menya SAKURA in Tokamachi City for the first time in about 15 years, counting from before the relocation. Founded in 2009 in Miyuki, the restaurant moved to its current location in 2023. Back then, the rich tsukemen boom was in full swing. Even in Niigata, Osharin made a big splash and opened a ramen shop at Ramen Museum, but this style of ramen was quite innovative in Tokamachi. The thin pork and fish broth has remained the same since then, with thick, chewy noodles perfectly cooked and a perfect finishing touch. I finished by squeezing lemon to change the flavor and slurp it down for a refreshing sip. After all, a tartness is the key to rich tsukemen. Though rich tsukemen is often referred to as "mataoma" these days, this bowl made a huge impact in Tokamachi as a pioneer.

(Translated by Google) [Added Spring 2025] Basically it's delicious. However, 150g of ramen and 200g of tsukemen are not enough. (postscript) We visited the new store after its relocation. Order via touch panel. Ramen has 160g of noodles and tsukemen has 200g, which is still a small amount for the Tokamachi area. Tsukemen can be made in medium size (additional 50g/50 yen) or large size (additional 100g/100 yen), so you can adjust it according to your stomach. *Ramen (additional 80g/100 yen) Also, the taste is still delicious and leaves a good impression. The Niboshi soy sauce ramen was also very delicious with a refreshing soy sauce without the strange smell of dried sardines (fish). We also have children's ramen and children's tsukemen, so you can feel safe bringing your children with you.

Family restaurant
Nestled in the corner of a supermarket near Tokamachi Station, レストランオガワヤ リオンドール店 exudes a charming, old-fashioned vibe reminiscent of family-run eateries. This beloved local spot offers an eclectic menu that spans Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisines. During my visit on a bustling Saturday lunchtime, I was greeted by the enticing aroma wafting from the kitchen and noticed several groups eagerly waiting for tables. Fortunately, I found a cozy spot at the counter.
(Translated by Google) A restaurant located in the corner of a supermarket near the station. It has the atmosphere of an old-fashioned, privately run family restaurant, and is loved by the locals. So, you can find everything from Japanese, Western, and Chinese cafes. I ordered chicken pilaf and chawan mushi. For the chicken pilaf, I was surprised to see three large pieces of fried chicken on top. Fully satisfying to eat. And very juicy. Pilaf is also very delicious. I thought that the flavor could only be produced because the rice is delicious in a rice-growing region. Chawanmushi is cheap, so it doesn't have many ingredients, but it did have wood ear mushrooms in it, which surprisingly went well with it and was delicious. (Translated by Google) I visited this restaurant because it had high reviews. It's located inside a supermarket near the station, just outside the JR ticket gates at Tokamachi Station. I visited on a Saturday around lunchtime, and there were already 4-5 other groups waiting, but they all wanted a table. There were a few seats available at the counter, so I asked a staff member and they quickly seated us. I had the popular half-and-half set. It could be described as a combination of thick fried noodles and a Chinese rice bowl, but it was delicious, just like the thick fried noodles you'd get at a local Chinese restaurant. It also came with one piece of fried chicken, which was also well-seasoned and freshly fried. Personally, I would have preferred if the portions of fried noodles and rice were a little larger. First of all, the atmosphere of the store was a retro-modern building, which gave me a good impression. I couldn't decide between curry or chicken lunch on the menu, but since the curry was said to be spicy and I don't like spicy food, I decided on chicken lunch. (Translated by Google) I visited on October 11, 2025. I searched for "all-you-can-eat Uonuma Koshihikari rice" and this place came up, so I made a reservation for 11:00. After getting a little lost in the rain, I arrived at the mysterious building. Up the stairs, I saw about 10 people waiting. Looking inside, I saw some people already eating before 11:00, so I asked a staff member if they could also accommodate me. It may have been because the weather wasn't great, but it seems like it would get very crowded on sunny days, so it's probably best to make a reservation. Perhaps because I seemed like a big eater, I was seated farthest from the food area (lol), and I immediately went to get my food. The selection wasn't that great, so don't imagine it as a tourist hotel buffet. I recommend waiting in line expecting the selection to be similar to that of a Toyoko Inn. The rice was delicious, of course, but the sweet potato and pumpkin with cream, vinegared gourd, and braised pork were also delicious. Whether you consider 2,500 yen expensive or cheap is up to you. I think I might come again. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes rice. Also, there was a surprise in the restroom. If it's your first time, I highly recommend you try it. I was a bit worried (lol). Went on an early January Sunday ~2:30p. Not crowded at all. Snowshoe rental for 409 JPY, and you can start the walk directly from the museum into Bijinbayashi 美人林forest. Incredible. Note that you must pay the 600 JPY museum entrance as well.

This is a really good place to take kids. The building itself is part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field project. You can climb the tall tower and get a good view from the big windows at the top. It's a 160 step staircase though and is hardly lit as it is also one of the art projects. The inside of the center is full of interesting items related to the local nature and countryside. There are snakes, frogs and fish close by and you can fish for crayfish in small ponds. There are stuffed examples of the local bird-life and an amazing collection of butterflies. The windows are made of a really think material and in winter you can see the deep snow piling up against it. There is a visual representation of the snowfall over the past decade or so which is very interesting. There is also a restaurant and a craft area where you can try your hand a making different objects out of objects scavenged from the nearby woods and fields. Perhaps our favorite thing were over 100 little drawers containing all sorts of different things related to the local environment - snake skins, bird nests, insects.

"The Last Classroom" is located in the Matsunoyama area within the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale region. It offers a unique sensory experience with light and sound in a dark room, creating an immersive atmosphere. Visitors may encounter an old man tending to the surroundings as there is no reception desk. The former school setting adds to the eerie ambiance, making it feel like a haunted house at times.
I was browsing google maps on my drive route and this popped up. I was so curious so I went there. I was the only one there for a while. It has a spooky vibe because the building is dark so all your other senses are heightened. It was an interesting experience and I recommend to go.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, and it appears to be a permanent exhibit. The inside of the school is completely dark, and you can experience a variety of art. It looks bright in the photo, but it's so dark that you can barely see it until your eyes adjust. The fear and light in the darkness makes you feel the awesomeness of art. It's a three-story building with a variety of artworks, but the space itself is an impressive experience. It's interesting to see how things change on the way home as your eyes adjust. (Translated by Google) 2021.7 visit Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival 2006 work. A collaboration between Christian Boltanski and Jean Calment, it is a permanent installation in an abandoned school. Unfortunately, my first visit was on a day when the museum was closed, so it was my long-awaited return visit. Maybe it's because I'm scared, My legs were not moving forward as much as I expected. The first and final class was intense for me. The smell of straw, like a silo of earth and straw, the feeling of the wind on my skin, the light and shadow, the sound, the sound of my heart pounding as it approached, left a particularly strong impression on me, and even thinking about it now brings back my anxiety. This anxiety and fear is different from being afraid of spiders or being afraid of the dark, but I think it's similar to that of the wife played by Shelley Duvall, who encounters the scene near the end of Kubrick's movie The Shining when the hotel elevator door slowly opens with a bang. It's like the scene I saw when I was a child is stuck in my mind, and I don't know if it's been engraved into my DNA at some point, like something I'd seen in a dream when I was sick, a scene that would have made me scream with anxiety and despair if I had dreamed of it, but it was quietly real here, and I was inside it. Proceed through the hallway lined with portraits painted in black. Was it the setting sun or a searchlight? The strong light shining in and the slowly rotating ventilation fan were so disturbing. A scene from Schindler's List comes to mind. I couldn't get into the room where the explosion sounded, which was right on the second floor after climbing the stairs, and I stood there at the entrance, and that's when I realized the extent of my anxiety. Resisting the urge to cover my ears from the sound of the explosion, I couldn't help but take a good look at the white room, so I quickly walked out into the sunlight without looking back. When I saw the tranquil scenery of Satoyama, I felt glad and happy to be able to return to my daily life. Even in the parking lot outside the building, the sound of cicadas and the faint sound of a heartbeat could be heard. I remember and reflect on this experience every day. It was scary, scary, scary. It was really scary. For some people, this work may go beyond just appreciating a bit of scary art, and before they know it, they may find themselves drawn into a nightmare. The reason you can have such an experience is because it is a work with such a strong and powerful message. I wonder how it will feel the next time I visit. In memory of Christian Boltanski. A closed school in the middle of summer, the echoing sound of cicadas, and cheerful ghosts. What a perfect piece for summer. (It seems that it was released in the middle of winter in January in 2021) 2024.8.11 revisited.

There are only two lifts and the slopes are not wide, so I didn't have high expectations at all. However, it was actually a ski slope with great cost performance. Lift tickets are incredibly cheap, and ski rentals are surprisingly cheap as well. At the center house, scoots and airboats were rented at low prices. What's more, the ski slope food is overwhelmingly delicious. If it was a big slope, there would definitely be a line. I will go again. (Translated by Google) Lift fees are quite cheap compared to others. Courses are divided into advanced and beginner sections. It seems like there is no intermediate course. Perhaps because it was the beginning of the season, it was difficult to see the poles, etc., and there was a risk of suddenly running into uncompacted snow outside the course. Many people actually fell down. (Myself included) There is no deceleration when entering the lift, so first-timers should be careful. I think the cost performance is good considering the price. Yukitsubaki's meat miso ramen is exquisite, and the course was empty, so I was satisfied with eating uncompacted snow powder for 2,000 yen for a 4-hour ticket. The downside is that there isn't much space in front of the second lift landing at the top, so you have to dodge to the left and right, and if you're a bad boarder, you might end up running into the fence in front of you. It seems that people also sleep in tents, and there were quite a few tent sites when I visited. [2024/2 added] The other day, I visited on February 18th (Sunday) for meat miso ramen and snowboarding. Was it because there was a tournament going on? The parking lot was full to the back and there was street parking all the way to the front road. However, there were no guides and the train stopped in a chaotic manner. I managed to find one space in the back and parked there, but some cars with local plates stopped blocking the exit, so it took me a while to get out. I think they should have a parking attendant on the days when it gets really crowded. I can't say that the locals have good parking manners either, so I'll deduct one star. When I arrived at 11:00, there were already four cars there. Although the surrounding area is a valley village, the view of the entire area was pleasant. The first floor of the building is where the fresh soba noodles are picked up, and after climbing the stairs to the second floor, the entrance looks like a regular private home. Today, chestnut burrs welcomed me. When I went inside, the entrance and guest rooms were just like any other private home. After sitting down, I was served hot roasted green tea and a small bowl of appetizers. I nibbled on these while waiting for 10 minutes before my hegi soba was served. The condiments were the standard chives and chopped green onions, and the complimentary pumpkin tempura was a welcome treat. The soba broth was a little on the thicker side. The soba itself was similar to the local Ojiya hegi soba, using nori seaweed, but the color was close to the original soba noodles and the texture was soft. Looking around, I noticed that 80% of the seats were filled and there were many young couples. Perhaps it was word of mouth or social media... I left the restaurant realizing how popular it was. Thank you for the meal 😎 (Original) 【2025.10.7】 国道沿いに幟が出ていて気になっていたお店。

Heading straight on Route 353 from Ojiya, you'll see signs at both the entrance and exit of the Yakushi Tunnel, making it easy to find. Turn left immediately after exiting the tunnel. You'll see it as you ascend the mountain road, so even first-timers won't get lost. Parking is easy, with signs. We arrived at 11:30 on the last day of the holidays. I saw several people outside the building, so I assumed there was a line. I wondered if there would be a long wait. The entrance is on the second floor. We opened the sliding door, entered, wrote our names and number of people on the waiting list, and waited outside the entrance. It seemed the people we'd seen earlier had finished eating during the first round, and luckily there was only one group of four ahead of us. After about 20 minutes, we were called inside. It appears to be a converted private home, and the alcove is visible, so it's full. We'd requested a table, so the two of us sat at a four-seater. I ordered the tempura soba set and my wife the tempura and grated daikon radish soba set, and we waited for a while. The soba soup, condiments, and small plates were brought out immediately. Eggplant, okra, and shiso pickles? Simmered vegetables? Either would have been fine, but both were delicious. At the same time, tea with a shiso scent was brought out, rather than soba tea, which was also a nice change of pace. The tempura soba set arrived without much of a wait, and the nihachi soba, made with nori seaweed as a binder, had an incredible sheen. I heard someone at the table next to us say, "Recently, I've eaten soba elsewhere and I wasn't sure whether it was chewy or firm, but the soba here seems a little softer, but it's still satisfying and delicious." I agree. The binding agent is nori seaweed, which not only gives the soba a smooth texture, but also makes the soba sauce not too thick, going perfectly with the various types of tempura that were served on top. I particularly tried the shrimp wrapped in shiso leaves, which was my first time trying it and it was delicious. My wife's tempura soba was also delicious, accented with shrimp, several types of tempura, and a large pickled plum. The service was polite and I was happy that they accept PayPay. I'd like to come back on a weekday next time and try the soba dango, which are not available on weekends or holidays. When I went outside, there were still several groups waiting, and from the parking lot where I had parked, a young couple with their small child were heading towards the restaurant.

Yuzawa Museum of History and Folklore Yukiguni-kan is a small yet fascinating museum located in the heart of Yuzawa. Housed in a traditional gabled farmhouse made of keyaki wood, it was established around 1935 and showcases artifacts from Jomon period sites, old folk tools, equipment, and even a fossil Calyptogena dating back 4 million years.
A must-visit place if you’ve read Kawabata Yasunari’s novel Snow Country. The scenes from the book came vividly to mind — this is the very heart of Echigo-Yuzawa.

A wonderful small museum that tells the history of Yugawa area and part of the livelihood of the Novel Prize Laureate, Kawabata Yasunari. The bestseller, Yukigini (Snow Country) , he wrote was based on his romance with a lady here. The museum has outlined this story and his life of literature. A must go even though you just want to do snow sport.

Interesting little culture/history/folk museum in the center of Yuzawa. Sections on traditional ways of life throughout the four season, as well as art and objects related to the novel Yukiguni. It doesn't take too long to go around the 3 floors and it is good value at 500 yen per adult.

Kiyotsu Warehouse Museum, formerly an elementary school, now houses a permanent exhibition by Yukihisa Isobe. The museum features art installations that interact with the environment and a captivating open atrium. Visitors can explore numerous works throughout the town and enjoy the picturesque scenery. Additionally, it showcases large-scale works themed around wind and offers insights into local history during the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale.

I visit Kiyotsu Gorge because I can enjoy it no matter how many times I go there. Nearby was Mr. Isobe's Warehouse Museum. Using the old school building and gymnasium, we were able to understand a lot of information such as changes in the flow of rivers. It was great to see the evolution of Mr. Isobe's work. (Translated by Google) I went during Golden Week. I don't know if floating sculpture is the correct answer, but this work was very popular with the children. As an adult, I was very interested in Mr. Isobe's way of thinking about the way he creates works, as he understands that the flow of the wind comes from the flow of rivers and topography, and he is thinking about how to sublimate this into art. I thought the term ecological planning made sense. Even during Golden Week, it was still cold in Niigata, so I felt like I needed an extra layer of clothing, especially for the red floating sculpture. You also have to take off your shoes to go near the works, so it's even colder. Adults are 800 yen, infants are free, and elementary school students and older are 400 yen. I think it takes about 20 minutes to just take a quick look, and 1.5 hours if you want to take a closer look, including the history. Nestled in the heart of the Echigo-Tsumari region, POTEMKIN - Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is a captivating blend of art and nature that has stood the test of time. After a decade since my last visit, I was thrilled to find its charm intact. The juxtaposition of golden rice fields framed by rusted iron plates transforms an ordinary rural scene into something extraordinary.
The majesty of trees, as framed by the reddish patina of the building, and the surrounding padi fields all around. Accompanied by the gurgling river.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time in about 10 years. Although it is an old stock exhibited at the Tsumari Art Triennale, it still has the same presence as ever. I've posted a photo (leaving aside the quality of the photo), but the real thing is several times better. The composition of the golden rice fields cut out through the gaps between the inorganic rusted iron plates creates a strange sensation of turning an ordinary rural landscape into art. When you look at the seemingly inorganic space from a cut-away perspective, it feels like a dry landscape in an ancient temple in Kyoto. The midsummer days are quite harsh, but as autumn deepens, I want to spend half a day in a daze while listening to the sound of flowing river water. (To prevent the spread of infection, please be considerate and offer your time to the next viewer.)

We were skiing in the region and needed a place to stay one night and this seemed to be the only option up to our standards. We were so pleasantly surprised at how lovely this hotel was. The service was so attentive and friendly (classic Japanese, the loveliest people!), and we were blown away by all the delicious options at both the dinner and breakfast buffets. The food was so good that we stayed a second night even though we had planned to move on. The onsen was wonderful and even though we don’t have children and it seemed very family-focused during our January stay, we didn’t feel out of place or anything. We even tried the snow rafting and the tubing hill in the morning and it was a blast! The hotel is slightly dated in terms of decor but it’s so well maintained and cared for. The rooms were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it!

Sushi bar, noodles bar, Peking duck, dessert bar, great selection of bread, healthy salad bar, drink bar were frequently replenished. Tried some rare delicious local Japanese food. Rice from nearby fields. Sake tasting was available at their mini convenient store. Was lucky to try Niigata local sake. Great value!

An excellent hotel for a nature getaway from Tokyo. The buffet restaurant is superb. There is so much good food. The sushi is made to order and excellent. They also feature a number of regional dishes that you should try. The soba and cold tofu come to mind. If you are traveling with young kids try to book the “welcome baby” room. It’s equipped with tons of accommodations for little ones. Just be aware, if you are coming by Shinkansen, that the hotel is basically in the middle of nowhere. There is a shuttle bus from the station to the hotel. Fortunately there are plenty of activities you can enjoy, such as bug catching, led by nature guides who explain about each specimen - in Japanese of course (don’t worry, all the bugs were released at the end).

A wonderful hotel. A very scenic area. Lots of activities, such as golf, cycling, swimming, running around the grounds. Great for adults and children. The buffet restaurant has tons of great food, very easy to over eat. The multiple onsen are big and comfortable, and you are given access to a Shampoo Bar if you ever wanted to know what using very expensive shampoos and conditions is like. If I had one complaint it would be for a quite large room the mini-refrigerator in the rooms is tiny! It’s barely big enough to hold more than a couple bottles of water. Overall a wonderful experience and I look forward to staying there again.

This is basically a countryside golf resort, but it has enough attractions for the non-golfer to make the (long) journey worthwhile. These attractions include a spa (with small swimming pool), putter golf, and a really nice (and free) display area/library that is dedicated to the natural environment and history of this part of Niigata Prefecture. I spent hours leafing through the photo collections in the library. The resort has lots of rooms. These can be a bit expensive at weekends, but there are midweek bargains to be had if you look around on the web.

This was a small but very beautiful castle. The black and white room at the entrance was a great photo opportunity. The gold room in the next floor was beautiful and the views from the top were gorgeous. Note it is a very steep and long hill to get here so have your walking shoes.

(Translated by Google) I stopped here on my way back from my trip to Nagano and Gunma. There is a parking lot on the way to the Matsushiro Castle Ruins Park Campground. From there, there is a long uphill promenade, and it takes about 15 minutes on foot to reach Matsushiro Castle. I didn't feel that hot while I was walking, but when I arrived and sat down to rest, I started to sweat. To enter the castle, you need to purchase a ticket for the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, which costs 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for elementary and junior high school students. At the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, you can view all the facilities and art works, but since I only stopped by briefly, I didn't buy a ticket and only viewed the works with the view that I had always admired. This castle was built for regional development tourism, and the actual castle is a little further back and was apparently the mountain castle of the Uesugi family. Next time, I would like to make time to take a leisurely stroll. Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is a significant part of the Echigo-Tsumari region, hosting the renowned Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. The area offers unique art installations in its picturesque countryside setting, providing an immersive experience for visitors.
We took a road trip to Nagano and Niigata. We enjoyed all the places we visited and the highlight of our trip was visiting the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. This was an outdoor art exhibit. We bought our tickets online then when we got there we received a passport that showed all the places where the art was located all over Niigata. We only saw maybe a quarter of the exhibits but it was so cool to see everything. Some of the exhibits were art pieces others were interact houses/museum type exhibits. We’ve never been to anything like this and it was so cool. Note you do need a car because the exhibits are very spread out.

(Translated by Google) Visited on October 27, 2024. The five-member Intelligent-chan group from college meets once a year, this time at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival. What on earth is this? The hanging laundry at the lift station is art. Maybe it's a pillowcase, but there were two orange tents nearby, but the tents don't seem to have anything to do with the Gejutsu Festival, maybe? I hung up my tattered Uniqlo pants to dry at home, but they were also stained. What on earth should I feel? Since I'm exhibiting something, am I making a statement or do I want people to feel something? Is it just smugness or is it OK for contemporary art to be anything that is different, something that has never existed before, or something that is rare? ? ? . One of the Intelligen-chan says that in Japanese, art and art are different, but art can be anything. To be honest, I don't really understand. Artificial objects in the grass. It's a foreign object, I can't feel any emotions. I have no impressions. There are ruins of a castle on top of the mountain, so I offer to go there. I agree too. No one has any regrets about watching Gejutsu, and no one is impressed by it. If you say something, you'll get beat up by the other four, all of them are cautious, and the intelligentsia-chans are smart. I'm not saying it's good or bad. The road leading to the castle ruins has disappeared into the bushes, and it is unclear where the castle ruins are. Where will contemporary art go? The road is in the bush (Original)

We arrived 15.30 and after buying tickets we had to hurry and start from the castle (drove the car up hill then walked) which closes at 16.00. Then drove down passing other outdoor arts before visiting the main building art the follows by another smaller building near by exhibiting traditional stories.

Ski resort
Matsudai Family is a popular ski area suitable for families and beginner to intermediate level skiers. The slopes have an average gradient of 13 degrees, with half of them being beginner level, making it perfect for first-timers. The north-facing slopes offer soft powder snow. It's a lesser-known ski resort, so it's not crowded and is often used for ski lessons by nearby schools.
Great place to enjoy ski/snowboard! Small, but with variety of courses, jumps and boxes.Cheap. Not crowded! Delicious food! Delicious Ramen !!!!!! Drink Bar ! Cheap rentals. And very nice staff ! Plus, access by train. Short walk from Matsudai Station.

Cheap lift ticket for a small place. This place offers night time skiing and snowboarding, but only one lift is open. Both lifts are open on weekends. There’s a small shop as well with supplies and a tiny selection of gear.

We went there when there was barely any snow. They just decided to open despite the condition and for that reason we got good discount on what's already very cheap price. A small but nice place for family with small kids.

(Translated by Google) I went there with my kids on Sunday and Monday this week! In conclusion, I will go again. Anyway, it's child-friendly, and all the staff members have children? and It's more kind to mothers and fathers raising children than I expected. Does the kids park have bicycle sleds, normal sleds, long sleds, go-kart-like sleds, and skateboard-like sleds? You can play for free. It's before business hours, but can I play with the playground equipment at the kids park? When I asked, I happily agreed and let me play. Although the facilities are not that great, the amount of snow and the mountains you can ski on are great. I don't get bored because I have it. If you get bored, there is a great kids' space inside the house. Drink bars and menus are unimaginably cheap in this day and age. It's conscientious. Preschoolers are allowed to drink only one drink from their parents. Overall it's cheap. It was quite crowded on Sunday, but it didn't feel cramped at all. On Monday, it was empty and almost reserved. I'm worried about management. I heard that it's like this on weekdays. Occasionally there will be training sessions for schools, groups, and professionals. It seems that children of any age can ride the lift as long as they can ski. My 3-year-old daughter can't ski, but she really wants to ride the lift. I heard that It is said that it is at your own risk and not recommended, but if you hold it and ski safely, it seems to be OK. It's a compact ski resort and you can walk from the station. Highly recommended! Although it was Chinese New Year, there weren't many foreigners there. It looks like everyone is getting off at Echigo Yuzawa Lahen in the foreground. For those with children, those who want to ski quietly, and those who are beginners, This is a highly recommended ski resort. My parents also grow rice, and I imagine it must be very hard to farm on such a slope.
