Waterfalls
Nestled in the breathtaking Shiretoko Peninsula, the Oshinkoshin Waterfall is a stunning natural wonder that captivates visitors with its dual streams cascading down from a height of 80 meters. Known as the 'Waterfall of Twin Beauties,' this magnificent waterfall spans 30 meters wide and showcases nature's raw power as it crashes into the rocks below.
Oshinkoshin Waterfall, also known as the "Waterfall of Twin Beauties," is a breathtaking roadside attraction along Route 334 on the Shiretoko Peninsula. Designated as one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, it features a spectacular twin-stream cascade that forks beautifully midway, creating a picturesque sight. The waterfall is easily accessible with free parking nearby and a short stairway leading to a mid-level observation platform. From here, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko Mountains. The waterfall is particularly captivating in spring when the snowmelt enhances its flow and in winter when drift ice can be spotted on the sea. While the stairway can get misty and slippery, especially during wet or icy conditions, it’s worth the effort for the experience. Oshinkoshin Waterfall is perfect for a quick stop along the scenic coastal drive, offering a memorable encounter with nature in just 10–15 minutes.

I dropped by at this waterfall on my drive from Bihoro to Utoro this hot afternoon (it was 35 degrees Celsius!) and I was rewarded with a cool respite thereat with a cold water spray from the waterfall. The steps ascending to the vantage point of this waterfall was comfortable - even for me in my mid-sixties - and the view thereat was beautifully tranquil. There's also a nice gift shop nearby and there are public toilets here.
Edtayjb — Google review
This is a really popular rest stop on the way to Shiretoko. There is a huge parking lot with a nice toilet and vending machines. The waterfall is spectacular. We arrived just before the tour busses, so the place was empty.
J S — Google review
Good place to stop by for toilet break if you are driving long. Waterfall is nice and have some brown bear warnings as they do have regular sightings. Only people driving pass or the tourist buses makes a toilet break here
Ravish M — Google review
Highly accessible by the road side (it even has a shop at the carpark) what's impressive is it's heavy water flow and that you stand pretty much in front of it. It's a combination of two waterfalls that converge. One of the top 100 waterfalls of Japan. A good stop if you are in the area!
Rtexal T — Google review
A good stop just before Shiretoko Park Nature Centre. It's not that majestic a fall but there's also a souvenir shop and toilets if needed. The view of the Sea of Okhotsk is also lovely

Conveniently located on the way to Utoro, just beside the road with ample parking. No fee with a souvenir store and toilet. You can feel the water mist in the air. Quite spectacular and no hike needed, just a flight of steps

Scenic Drives
The Road To The Sky start point is a must-visit detour while traveling to Shiretoko Shari or Abashiri in Hokkaido, Japan. This scenic route spans 28 kilometers and offers breathtaking views. Visitors are advised to drive carefully and can make use of the limited free parking available. An observatory, restaurants, and restrooms are also accessible nearby.
The “Road to the Sky,” also known as the “Road to Heaven” (天に続く道), begins at its official Start Point located in Minehama, Shari Town, Hokkaido. This iconic viewpoint marks the beginning of a stunning 28-kilometer stretch of perfectly straight road that appears to rise into the sky, creating a dramatic and surreal scene. The Start Point features a small wooden platform with a playful signboard and a limited parking area with around nine spaces. While there are no restrooms on site, the spot is open at all hours and provides one of the best angles to capture the illusion of the road meeting the heavens. Just a short 15-minute drive from JR Shiretoko-Shari Station, it’s easily accessible and a popular photo spot for drivers, bikers, and photographers. From here, visitors can continue on to the nearby observatory or stop by a small café further along the road. It’s recommended to visit early in the morning or during off-peak hours to enjoy the view without crowds and to drive cautiously, as the road can be narrow in places.

Interesting attraction. The car park is small and there is only one decent viewing spot. Hard to not capture the power line from said viewing podium.
Herpius D — Google review
Most people stop by on the way to Shiretoko National Park, a place to snap some pictures. The wait is just a few minutes to take turn to take photos, probably just a small group of tourists at any one time.
Will T — Google review
Great road to sky viewpoint from 1 angle and road to sea viewpoint on the right.. Do come to enjoy the view if you are in the area. To note there is just a carpark and the viewpoints. There are no toilet nor shops here.
Lester E — Google review
We drove up the “road to the sky” and it’s not actually 26km of straight road as advertised. There were at least 2 turns along the way. The view itself is about 3km. There is a nice sign and no tourists at 8am when we visited.
J S — Google review
Welcome to heaven cafe 🤣 amused by this sign board. You can still grab a drink here even in the winter cold on feb. Seems like during non winter months you can climb to the observation deck for a better view of the sea. The drift ice have just came to the area about 2 days back and is still visible in the background of the video. On a good day like this you can see the mt kounabetsu on the side as well. Do check out the end point for some great photos but its abit of a drive down. -End of the road leading to heaven

The Shiretoko National Park Nature Center, located in the Utoro area, offers a range of facilities and activities for visitors. The center provides park information, a short film, and an outdoor retailer where visitors can obtain various equipment including bear spray. Additionally, there is a cafe and a short trail available for exploration.
An educational center with outdoor gear shop. Information and videos about wildlife in this area and rental equipments are available for the hikes here. Its the starting point to furepe falls and some other trails as well. We came in early feb and got ourselves some snow shoes. The walk to furepe falls is about 20min one way not to bad a walk. There are some trails that are closed in winter. Overall the service staff is amazing in explaining some of the details. We got though some harder translations with google translate.
Roxanne L — Google review
I was at this Centre today before walking the Furepe Waterfall Trail. I was impressed by how the Centre not only catered to educating visitors to the Park on the do's and donts' - especially when encountering a bear thereat - but how it catered to the shopping and dining needs of visitors - and of course, providing the necessary public toilet amenities. I did buy a few things at the Centre today and I was impressed by how friendly and courteous the checkout staff were.
Edtayjb — Google review
Really helpful staff. We were a little confused about what was available in advance. We were able to rent rubber boots for 500 yen each which were really handy in the snow. The first walk to Furepe Falls was 2km, it was a nice walk, the snow looked impressive and we saw some deer along the way. The waterfall was a trickle so not that much to see but the cliffs were impressive and worth a look. The wind was a bit scary when we visited! Back at the centre we decided to do a second trail - we asked at the counter what's available and were given a map for another trail into woodland. It took us about an hour and a half on snow shoes (also rented for 500 yen each). Hard work for the legs but good fun! Some beautiful views of the trees in snow and the overlooking mountains, with an observation area at the halfway point. I wasn't that interested in the lectures/films at the centre itself but the staff were really friendly and helpful at setting us up for our walks. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Shiretoko area

Shiretoko-Goko Lakes Field House is a stunning park with five beautiful lakes that offer a manageable walking route. Visitors can watch an informative video about the local wildlife and ecosystem, which is both comprehensive and easy to understand for English speakers. The entrance fee is fair, but there's also a free boardwalk with stunning views for those who prefer not to pay.
Amazing park! I loved the walk around the 5 lakes - it is a very manageable route. I think it’s great that you must watch an informative video about the local wildlife and ecosystem- I wish more places would do this! The tutorial was comprehensive and easy to understand for an English speaker, and the fee was more than fair for access to the park. However, if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee, or are not up to a longer walk, the free board walk is absolutely stunning! So I would recommend this place regardless. I went during golden week, so when it’s a busy season get there early! I arrived at around 8:30 and basically went right in. When I left at 10:30/11 ish the parking lot was FULL, and there were dozens of cars lined up down the road! So plan ahead! Also - When I went in early May, cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom - there are a few trees that grow by the lakes. In a week or so I think they’ll be in full bloom!

The Shiretoko-Goko Lakes Field House is the ideal starting point for exploring the stunning Shiretoko Five Lakes area. Open from late April to early November, it welcomes visitors daily starting at 7:30 AM and remains open until around sunset, with exact closing times varying by season. Before venturing onto the trails, all visitors are required to attend a brief safety and information lecture to learn about bear precautions and ecological guidelines. From there, hikers can choose between two trail options: a shorter 1.6 km loop to the first two lakes or the full 3 km circuit taking about 90 minutes to visit all five. The Field House not only ensures visitor safety and environmental preservation but also enhances the overall experience, making it a thoughtful and essential gateway into Shiretoko’s breathtaking natural landscapes.

Really beautiful place! Well worth the long drive in from Sapporo. Tour guide needed and best to take the longer route to fully enjoy the scenery.
Alex G — Google review
Beautiful scenery so worth the drive for that. Lovely burgers and ice cream. They take a lot of effort to preserve the local environment and wildlife and prevent damage from tourism, which is much appreciated. Efforts are made to reduce bear sightings, so don’t come expecting to see them!
Susanna T — Google review
We took the wood trail and was lucky not to see any bears albeit we saw fresh bear poop along the path. We had our bear bells and stayed close with people in our group. Beautiful lakes and protected nature.
Sze T — Google review
Joined a 3 hour walking tour around 5 lakes. The guide was patient to introduce traces of bear activities, and share with us lots of information about wide life and plants. The path would be closed and all tour suspended if a bear was spotted. It was near the end of our tour when we were informed of bear sighting near us. The guide coached us to the fenced path and we had a wonderful time, though we did not actually see any bears.
Olivia C — Google review
The centre is where you start your walk around the Five Lakes. You can either take the elevated walkway, which is free and where you see 2 of the lakes, or take the ground path, which costs ¥250 and you see all 5 lakes. If you take the ground path you need to register with the centre staff and listen to a 15 min briefing. The ground path of finishes on the elevated walkway. You can get here via shuttle bus from the Shiretoko nature center or you can drive. On Monday August 12 the wait for the carpark was an hour and started at the turn off for Kamuy -Wakka falls. Parking costs ¥500. Motorcycles don't have to wait to enter.

The nature trail walk around the 5 lakes was educational and interesting. Learn a lot about brown bear even though didn’t encounter any. But have learned why it is not a good idea to meet one in wild. Guide was fun and knowledgeable.

Waterfalls
Kamuiwakka yunotaki Hot Falls is a unique natural wonder, as it is fed by hot spring water from an active volcano. The falls offer a rustic outdoor onsen experience with shallow pools for bathing, creating a special and relaxing atmosphere surrounded by nature. Visitors can take a dip in the waterfall's basin or explore the various water holes along the stream.
Absolutely incredible experience! You must book in advance though (at least one day before) - so be sure to do so or you won't be able to participate on that day. You also must wear appropriate sandals or water shoes. To get here you must drive for around 10km along a well maintained forest road (dirt track) however I also believe a shuttle bus service operates during the peak season. Upon arrival, show the friendly staff your booking confirmation and they'll provide you with a helmet and useful information about the Waterfalls and how to enjoy the experience safely. Then, you make your way to the first waterfall and continue upwards, passing through deep pools, large rocky areas and lots of different waterfalls as the water gets warmer and warmer the further up you go towards the spring. There are ropes in some areas to assist you in climbing the rocks. There is a member of staff stationed towards the top of the route, too, if you need any assistance. The waterfalls are surrounded by stunning forests and towering mountains. You are really surrounded by nature everywhere and it's so beautiful and peaceful. It's just the most wonderful place! I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Shiretoko National Park - you won't regret it!
Darren M — Google review
You DONT need reservation if you just come by and take photos of the waterfall. If you want to climb the waterfall, you should understand you must wet.
Miko Y — Google review
We had a superb experience at the falls...the water is nice and warm, the climb is just challenging enough abd the pools of water to wade and slide make it delightful. Definitely worth a visit as there's nothing that comes close to this experience! A special shout out to the Shireteko Natural Foundation for amazing management. There's a guide at Fall 3 which is the trickiest to navigate. Honestly I was a little scared to go up but Yumi here guided me perfectly and thanks to her encouragement I could reach the summit (which is base of Fall 3). You can't climb Fall 4. Yumi is extremely helpful, proactive and tbh the kind of cheerleader-cum-nudger everyone needs in life! Decent fitness required. Not suitable for people with knee or back issues. Or any kind of mobility issues.
Pratibha K — Google review
This is the northernmost point you can drive to on the western side of Shiretoko. There are tours up the waterfall but we didn’t participate. The water is warm and there are pools you can dip your feet in if you hike up. The hiking trailed were closed due to a recent bear attack. Getting to the waterfall required a 5km drive on dirt and stone path.

Kamuiwakka, the water of the gods. The higher you go, the higher the water temperature becomes, but because it is highly acidic it may be harsh for those with sensitive skin. Apparently people used to climb in straw sandals, but I wonder what it is like now. Many people have slipped off since long ago. When I was younger I was almost completely ignorant and didn't care, but it seems that terrifying brown bears appear. Back then I didn't care at all and just bivouaced on the hiking trail. Ignorance is a frightening thing. Not just with bears, I think you should think carefully before climbing Kamuiwakka Valley.

Jennifer L — Google review
The water is very acidic, coming down the waterfall my skin was on fire and felt like needles on it. I didn’t have any cuts. There aren’t that much fresh water to rinse. We had to use our drinking water instead. I didn’t think this hike was that worth it. The water is lukewarm at best and you risk serious injuries on the rock.

Shiretoko National Park, situated on the remote Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unspoiled nature and diverse wildlife. The park offers breathtaking views of the Shiretoko Goko Lakes nestled in virgin forests and from the summit of Rausu Mountain. Visitors can explore various visitor centers, field houses, and museums that provide insights into the park's regulations and attractions.
A magical walk through an ancient, untouched forest. You can truly feel the power of life in every plant here. Tiny saplings that haven’t even reached your knees have been standing strong for over 20 years. The number of oak acorns scattered on the ground even serves as an indicator of the forest’s overall health for the year. When you’re tired, gently rub the leaves of the fragrant cypress—its calming, earthy scent brings an instant sense of peace and relaxation. Photos and videos barely capture a tenth of its true beauty. I highly recommend experiencing the delicate balance of this rich ecosystem in person. My only regret? I didn’t spot a brown bear 🐻😂

Beautiful area. We visited in winter and took a tour to see the Stella’s sea eagles. The tour was great and was extremely informative. Got to see quite a few eagles too. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing as the weather gets very cold particularly if it’s windy.
Desleigh D — Google review
We went in the winter and the view was outstanding. Shiretoko with the drift ice is beautiful. What isn't is the train ride there made for tourists, horribly noisy, the staff says everything on a loudspeaker ("See the drift ice" , "look at the mountain" etc.). Insufferably loud and very unnecessary service - you can see all without help obviously. BUT the most disappointing part is how we don't speak about fishing activities in a national park area... We went to the port and saw a fish drying facility which is protected by nets from the birds that would go and "steal" the fish. Marine birds are hung up and dying as they get caught in these nets. Commercial fishing already has a huge amount of bycatch on the sea, we have to add a lot more to it on land too. And all this in a national park - a should be protected area.
Elena T — Google review
A unique landscape if nothing else but there is more. Upon finishing the well made & well maintained wooden broadwalk or if you decided to take the ground path you will end up at the last point & be treated to an impressive mountain range backdrop. Topped with long since hardened molten lava the tops are shrouded in low clouds. A mountain backdrop dropping down steeply to the Okhotsk sea & a ‘sea’ of short bamboo grass with 5 small lakes in between truly makes for a unique landscape. There was only one large lake when we went in early October as the others may have drained at that time of the year. A modest park entrance fee of ¥500 was charged for cars. Those choosing to walk on the ground track are required to pay a small fee per person but the broadwalk is free.

This review is specifically for the Shiretoko-goko Lakes or the Shiretoko Five Lakes at the Shiretoko National Park. As a first time foreign tourist in Hokkaido, I visited this attraction this afternoon and I was impressed by the "as far as the eye can see" wooden boardwalks to see the main lake here, making it a relatively comfortable walk among nature - whereas the other four lakes are in a less accessible situation for the ordinary tourist. While this place boasts the lake(s) and its wooden boardwalks, the scenery of its surroundings is very beautiful and if you are lucky, you would be able see wildlife nearby - especially deer. So if you are in Shiretoko, I highly recommend this place for you to visit.
Edtayjb — Google review
When I visit this place, I feel like the fatigue of my long journey is gone. The fresh air and peace that cannot be expressed in words seemed to cover my whole body. It was an experience that made my mind feel comfortable with a warm and cozy atmosphere. If I have a chance, I would like to visit again and feel the emotion again. It was a beautiful place I really couldn't forget.

Kumanoya seafood restaurant is a cozy and highly recommended spot for delicious seafood dishes. The tasty seafood ramen and kaisen don with fresh umi, octopus, and generous amounts of salmon roe are particularly noteworthy. Despite some confusion about its opening hours, it's worth visiting during lunchtime from 11 am to 4 pm. The small yet welcoming restaurant offers prompt service and great value for mouthwatering eats.

The taste is wonderful, so fresh! And the price is reasonable for the fish variety, amount, and quality. The staff is busy and rushing around, but they were still friendly and polite, so I was okay with it. •Negatives: ❄️ Sea urchin season is in the summer, so they don't have it in the winter; but they didn't write that anywhere or post any signs. They did write "instead of sea urchin, we're providing fish eggs" on the menu but they didn't write why. If you're not from the area, you might not know it's out of season. Even Japanese tourists were asking about sea urchin. The staff is so rushed, they might do well to post signs clearly stating it. 🦴One of my sashimi varieties (so 2~3 pieces total) had bones in it. I don't know if this is normal for that type of fish, or maybe a Hokkaido thing as I've never been before, but that was the first time I've had bones in sashimi and I didn't enjoy it. 📜The menu is a bit confusing. There are pictures on the front but the options to make them a teishoku/plate are inside the menu. There doesn't seem to be an English menu. The staff might not have to rush around so much if they made a new menu.

Tasty seafood ramen found here. The stock is excellent. The kaisen don features fresh umi, octopus, sashimi in luxurious amounts of salmon roe. Highly recommended. The opening hours on Google mention is opened for dinner. But we came twice and it was closed. It is open during lunch 11 to 4pm. GPS guided me near to kitakobushi hotel but is actually opposite the shiretoko heritage centre

We was just randomly walk into this shop, the seller don't really speak Japanese. But the food is nice n fresh. Love it.

Very good “sea food donburi”. Sea food lover should definitely visit here!

Seafood ramen was good. Shoyu Ramen was too salty. Like previous contributer said - hasty staff.

Good quality food at a reasonable price.

Had two kaisendons. Ebi is spectacularly fresh. Shrimp head was a delight. Ikura was fresh. Other patrons seem to prefer the seafood ramen so that'll be my order next time. Lineup early to avoid waiting too long. Great choice to eat in shiretoko

Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Shiokaze is a cozy and welcoming restaurant in Shiretoko that offers a variety of non-seafood options, making it a great choice for those who don't eat fish or seafood. The restaurant may not look like much from the outside, but inside, guests can enjoy seating at tables with floor cushions or at the bar. The menu features traditional Ainu-style Japanese dishes, including frozen salmon sashimi and sashimi sets with various types of fish.
This is a gem of japan! After travelling for one month in the country, and struggling a bit with finding good food, we landed here by chance: starving, without a reservation, and seeing zero seats available. The owner was super nice and accepted to host us for dinner on a later hour when tables wood free up. We had delicious meals: sashimi was super fresh and the taste just amazing, the bowl of rice with fish and caviar was superb, and the same can be said for their ramen and gyoza! We ended up eating there for our whole stay in the area, having fun chat with the lovely couple who owns the place. Atmosphere is great and food is authentic and good, with vibes straight from a Miyazaki movie. Prices are great as well for the high quality of food, this is a must go place if you are staying near Shiretoko national park.

The quality of the food didn't live up to the high expectations of other reviewers, and the prices weren't particularly low. This may be due to the prices and quality in the tourist area. Despite not offering anything out of the ordinary, the restaurant still attracts many bookings. The atmosphere is that of a typical izakaya with home-style cooking. Despite being run by just two people, the service was attentive and polite.

A very small restaurant but the food was so amazing! Reservation is a MUST. Everything that we ordered tasted so good, including a simple plate of chicken karaage. Sashimi was super fresh too!

Super nice restaurant, the lovely and friendly couple cooked delicious meals, we had the best grilled mackerel ever! Great dinner experience and make sure to book in advance!

Lovely family run place with a wide selection of dishes. Not too many restaurants are open for dinner in the area, and reservations are advisable because it is a small place. Food was delicious and the staff was wonderful, especially the chef and the hostess.

Very good mostly local food served almost in your family’s kitchen . Small and intimate. Husband and Wife team serving good food in a friendly fashion but a little depressing the room nothing wrong but not very exhilarating. Having said that you don’t get much choice around here so it’s a decent option . However you must reserve as it’s very small

the nicest couple are serving up incredible home ccoked meals in a nice room. had the grilled mackerel at her suggestion and it was outstanding. the miso with local seaweed was also great.

This restaurant is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it. One of the best seafood/sushi we had in Hokkaido. The staff was lovely and we even got free refills for the spinach. Thank you!
