Waterfalls
Nestled in the breathtaking Shiretoko Peninsula, the Oshinkoshin Waterfall is a stunning natural wonder that captivates visitors with its dual streams cascading down from a height of 80 meters. Known as the 'Waterfall of Twin Beauties,' this magnificent waterfall spans 30 meters wide and showcases nature's raw power as it crashes into the rocks below.
Oshinkoshin Waterfall, also known as the "Waterfall of Twin Beauties," is a breathtaking roadside attraction along Route 334 on the Shiretoko Peninsula. Designated as one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, it features a spectacular twin-stream cascade that forks beautifully midway, creating a picturesque sight. The waterfall is easily accessible with free parking nearby and a short stairway leading to a mid-level observation platform. From here, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko Mountains. The waterfall is particularly captivating in spring when the snowmelt enhances its flow and in winter when drift ice can be spotted on the sea. While the stairway can get misty and slippery, especially during wet or icy conditions, it’s worth the effort for the experience. Oshinkoshin Waterfall is perfect for a quick stop along the scenic coastal drive, offering a memorable encounter with nature in just 10–15 minutes.

I dropped by at this waterfall on my drive from Bihoro to Utoro this hot afternoon (it was 35 degrees Celsius!) and I was rewarded with a cool respite thereat with a cold water spray from the waterfall. The steps ascending to the vantage point of this waterfall was comfortable - even for me in my mid-sixties - and the view thereat was beautifully tranquil. There's also a nice gift shop nearby and there are public toilets here.
Edtayjb — Google review
This is a really popular rest stop on the way to Shiretoko. There is a huge parking lot with a nice toilet and vending machines. The waterfall is spectacular. We arrived just before the tour busses, so the place was empty.
J S — Google review
Good place to stop by for toilet break if you are driving long. Waterfall is nice and have some brown bear warnings as they do have regular sightings. Only people driving pass or the tourist buses makes a toilet break here
Ravish M — Google review
Highly accessible by the road side (it even has a shop at the carpark) what's impressive is it's heavy water flow and that you stand pretty much in front of it. It's a combination of two waterfalls that converge. One of the top 100 waterfalls of Japan. A good stop if you are in the area!
Rtexal T — Google review
A good stop just before Shiretoko Park Nature Centre. It's not that majestic a fall but there's also a souvenir shop and toilets if needed. The view of the Sea of Okhotsk is also lovely
George K — Google review
Conveniently located on the way to Utoro, just beside the road with ample parking. No fee with a souvenir store and toilet. You can feel the water mist in the air. Quite spectacular and no hike needed, just a flight of steps

Scenic Drives
The Road To The Sky start point is a must-visit detour while traveling to Shiretoko Shari or Abashiri in Hokkaido, Japan. This scenic route spans 28 kilometers and offers breathtaking views. Visitors are advised to drive carefully and can make use of the limited free parking available. An observatory, restaurants, and restrooms are also accessible nearby.
The “Road to the Sky,” also known as the “Road to Heaven” (天に続く道), begins at its official Start Point located in Minehama, Shari Town, Hokkaido. This iconic viewpoint marks the beginning of a stunning 28-kilometer stretch of perfectly straight road that appears to rise into the sky, creating a dramatic and surreal scene. The Start Point features a small wooden platform with a playful signboard and a limited parking area with around nine spaces. While there are no restrooms on site, the spot is open at all hours and provides one of the best angles to capture the illusion of the road meeting the heavens. Just a short 15-minute drive from JR Shiretoko-Shari Station, it’s easily accessible and a popular photo spot for drivers, bikers, and photographers. From here, visitors can continue on to the nearby observatory or stop by a small café further along the road. It’s recommended to visit early in the morning or during off-peak hours to enjoy the view without crowds and to drive cautiously, as the road can be narrow in places.

Interesting attraction. The car park is small and there is only one decent viewing spot. Hard to not capture the power line from said viewing podium.
Herpius D — Google review
Most people stop by on the way to Shiretoko National Park, a place to snap some pictures. The wait is just a few minutes to take turn to take photos, probably just a small group of tourists at any one time.
Will T — Google review
Great road to sky viewpoint from 1 angle and road to sea viewpoint on the right.. Do come to enjoy the view if you are in the area. To note there is just a carpark and the viewpoints. There are no toilet nor shops here.
Lester E — Google review
We drove up the “road to the sky” and it’s not actually 26km of straight road as advertised. There were at least 2 turns along the way. The view itself is about 3km. There is a nice sign and no tourists at 8am when we visited.
J S — Google review
Welcome to heaven cafe 🤣 amused by this sign board. You can still grab a drink here even in the winter cold on feb. Seems like during non winter months you can climb to the observation deck for a better view of the sea. The drift ice have just came to the area about 2 days back and is still visible in the background of the video. On a good day like this you can see the mt kounabetsu on the side as well. Do check out the end point for some great photos but its abit of a drive down. -End of the road leading to heaven

The Shiretoko National Park Nature Center, located in the Utoro area, offers a range of facilities and activities for visitors. The center provides park information, a short film, and an outdoor retailer where visitors can obtain various equipment including bear spray. Additionally, there is a cafe and a short trail available for exploration.
An educational center with outdoor gear shop. Information and videos about wildlife in this area and rental equipments are available for the hikes here. Its the starting point to furepe falls and some other trails as well. We came in early feb and got ourselves some snow shoes. The walk to furepe falls is about 20min one way not to bad a walk. There are some trails that are closed in winter. Overall the service staff is amazing in explaining some of the details. We got though some harder translations with google translate.
Roxanne L — Google review
I was at this Centre today before walking the Furepe Waterfall Trail. I was impressed by how the Centre not only catered to educating visitors to the Park on the do's and donts' - especially when encountering a bear thereat - but how it catered to the shopping and dining needs of visitors - and of course, providing the necessary public toilet amenities. I did buy a few things at the Centre today and I was impressed by how friendly and courteous the checkout staff were.
Edtayjb — Google review
Really helpful staff. We were a little confused about what was available in advance. We were able to rent rubber boots for 500 yen each which were really handy in the snow. The first walk to Furepe Falls was 2km, it was a nice walk, the snow looked impressive and we saw some deer along the way. The waterfall was a trickle so not that much to see but the cliffs were impressive and worth a look. The wind was a bit scary when we visited! Back at the centre we decided to do a second trail - we asked at the counter what's available and were given a map for another trail into woodland. It took us about an hour and a half on snow shoes (also rented for 500 yen each). Hard work for the legs but good fun! Some beautiful views of the trees in snow and the overlooking mountains, with an observation area at the halfway point. I wasn't that interested in the lectures/films at the centre itself but the staff were really friendly and helpful at setting us up for our walks. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Shiretoko area

Shiretoko-Goko Lakes Field House is a stunning park with five beautiful lakes that offer a manageable walking route. Visitors can watch an informative video about the local wildlife and ecosystem, which is both comprehensive and easy to understand for English speakers. The entrance fee is fair, but there's also a free boardwalk with stunning views for those who prefer not to pay.
Amazing park! I loved the walk around the 5 lakes - it is a very manageable route. I think it’s great that you must watch an informative video about the local wildlife and ecosystem- I wish more places would do this! The tutorial was comprehensive and easy to understand for an English speaker, and the fee was more than fair for access to the park. However, if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee, or are not up to a longer walk, the free board walk is absolutely stunning! So I would recommend this place regardless. I went during golden week, so when it’s a busy season get there early! I arrived at around 8:30 and basically went right in. When I left at 10:30/11 ish the parking lot was FULL, and there were dozens of cars lined up down the road! So plan ahead! Also - When I went in early May, cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom - there are a few trees that grow by the lakes. In a week or so I think they’ll be in full bloom!
Megan — Google review
The Shiretoko-Goko Lakes Field House is the ideal starting point for exploring the stunning Shiretoko Five Lakes area. Open from late April to early November, it welcomes visitors daily starting at 7:30 AM and remains open until around sunset, with exact closing times varying by season. Before venturing onto the trails, all visitors are required to attend a brief safety and information lecture to learn about bear precautions and ecological guidelines. From there, hikers can choose between two trail options: a shorter 1.6 km loop to the first two lakes or the full 3 km circuit taking about 90 minutes to visit all five. The Field House not only ensures visitor safety and environmental preservation but also enhances the overall experience, making it a thoughtful and essential gateway into Shiretoko’s breathtaking natural landscapes.

Really beautiful place! Well worth the long drive in from Sapporo. Tour guide needed and best to take the longer route to fully enjoy the scenery.
Alex G — Google review
Beautiful scenery so worth the drive for that. Lovely burgers and ice cream. They take a lot of effort to preserve the local environment and wildlife and prevent damage from tourism, which is much appreciated. Efforts are made to reduce bear sightings, so don’t come expecting to see them!
Susanna T — Google review
We took the wood trail and was lucky not to see any bears albeit we saw fresh bear poop along the path. We had our bear bells and stayed close with people in our group. Beautiful lakes and protected nature.
Sze T — Google review
Joined a 3 hour walking tour around 5 lakes. The guide was patient to introduce traces of bear activities, and share with us lots of information about wide life and plants. The path would be closed and all tour suspended if a bear was spotted. It was near the end of our tour when we were informed of bear sighting near us. The guide coached us to the fenced path and we had a wonderful time, though we did not actually see any bears.
Olivia C — Google review
The centre is where you start your walk around the Five Lakes. You can either take the elevated walkway, which is free and where you see 2 of the lakes, or take the ground path, which costs ¥250 and you see all 5 lakes. If you take the ground path you need to register with the centre staff and listen to a 15 min briefing. The ground path of finishes on the elevated walkway. You can get here via shuttle bus from the Shiretoko nature center or you can drive. On Monday August 12 the wait for the carpark was an hour and started at the turn off for Kamuy -Wakka falls. Parking costs ¥500. Motorcycles don't have to wait to enter.
Judy O — Google review
The nature trail walk around the 5 lakes was educational and interesting. Learn a lot about brown bear even though didn’t encounter any. But have learned why it is not a good idea to meet one in wild. Guide was fun and knowledgeable.

Waterfalls
Kamuiwakka yunotaki Hot Falls is a unique natural wonder, as it is fed by hot spring water from an active volcano. The falls offer a rustic outdoor onsen experience with shallow pools for bathing, creating a special and relaxing atmosphere surrounded by nature. Visitors can take a dip in the waterfall's basin or explore the various water holes along the stream.
Absolutely incredible experience! You must book in advance though (at least one day before) - so be sure to do so or you won't be able to participate on that day. You also must wear appropriate sandals or water shoes. To get here you must drive for around 10km along a well maintained forest road (dirt track) however I also believe a shuttle bus service operates during the peak season. Upon arrival, show the friendly staff your booking confirmation and they'll provide you with a helmet and useful information about the Waterfalls and how to enjoy the experience safely. Then, you make your way to the first waterfall and continue upwards, passing through deep pools, large rocky areas and lots of different waterfalls as the water gets warmer and warmer the further up you go towards the spring. There are ropes in some areas to assist you in climbing the rocks. There is a member of staff stationed towards the top of the route, too, if you need any assistance. The waterfalls are surrounded by stunning forests and towering mountains. You are really surrounded by nature everywhere and it's so beautiful and peaceful. It's just the most wonderful place! I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Shiretoko National Park - you won't regret it!
Darren M — Google review
You DONT need reservation if you just come by and take photos of the waterfall. If you want to climb the waterfall, you should understand you must wet.
Miko Y — Google review
We had a superb experience at the falls...the water is nice and warm, the climb is just challenging enough abd the pools of water to wade and slide make it delightful. Definitely worth a visit as there's nothing that comes close to this experience! A special shout out to the Shireteko Natural Foundation for amazing management. There's a guide at Fall 3 which is the trickiest to navigate. Honestly I was a little scared to go up but Yumi here guided me perfectly and thanks to her encouragement I could reach the summit (which is base of Fall 3). You can't climb Fall 4. Yumi is extremely helpful, proactive and tbh the kind of cheerleader-cum-nudger everyone needs in life! Decent fitness required. Not suitable for people with knee or back issues. Or any kind of mobility issues.
Pratibha K — Google review
This is the northernmost point you can drive to on the western side of Shiretoko. There are tours up the waterfall but we didn’t participate. The water is warm and there are pools you can dip your feet in if you hike up. The hiking trailed were closed due to a recent bear attack. Getting to the waterfall required a 5km drive on dirt and stone path.
J S — Google review
Kamuiwakka, the water of the gods. The higher you go, the higher the water temperature becomes, but because it is highly acidic it may be harsh for those with sensitive skin. Apparently people used to climb in straw sandals, but I wonder what it is like now. Many people have slipped off since long ago. When I was younger I was almost completely ignorant and didn't care, but it seems that terrifying brown bears appear. Back then I didn't care at all and just bivouaced on the hiking trail. Ignorance is a frightening thing. Not just with bears, I think you should think carefully before climbing Kamuiwakka Valley.

Incredible experience climbing the waterfalls with no crowds, and swimming in the naturally heated pools
Jennifer L — Google review
The water is very acidic, coming down the waterfall my skin was on fire and felt like needles on it. I didn’t have any cuts. There aren’t that much fresh water to rinse. We had to use our drinking water instead. I didn’t think this hike was that worth it. The water is lukewarm at best and you risk serious injuries on the rock.

Shiretoko National Park, situated on the remote Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unspoiled nature and diverse wildlife. The park offers breathtaking views of the Shiretoko Goko Lakes nestled in virgin forests and from the summit of Rausu Mountain. Visitors can explore various visitor centers, field houses, and museums that provide insights into the park's regulations and attractions.
A magical walk through an ancient, untouched forest. You can truly feel the power of life in every plant here. Tiny saplings that haven’t even reached your knees have been standing strong for over 20 years. The number of oak acorns scattered on the ground even serves as an indicator of the forest’s overall health for the year. When you’re tired, gently rub the leaves of the fragrant cypress—its calming, earthy scent brings an instant sense of peace and relaxation. Photos and videos barely capture a tenth of its true beauty. I highly recommend experiencing the delicate balance of this rich ecosystem in person. My only regret? I didn’t spot a brown bear 🐻😂

Beautiful area. We visited in winter and took a tour to see the Stella’s sea eagles. The tour was great and was extremely informative. Got to see quite a few eagles too. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing as the weather gets very cold particularly if it’s windy.
Desleigh D — Google review
We went in the winter and the view was outstanding. Shiretoko with the drift ice is beautiful. What isn't is the train ride there made for tourists, horribly noisy, the staff says everything on a loudspeaker ("See the drift ice" , "look at the mountain" etc.). Insufferably loud and very unnecessary service - you can see all without help obviously. BUT the most disappointing part is how we don't speak about fishing activities in a national park area... We went to the port and saw a fish drying facility which is protected by nets from the birds that would go and "steal" the fish. Marine birds are hung up and dying as they get caught in these nets. Commercial fishing already has a huge amount of bycatch on the sea, we have to add a lot more to it on land too. And all this in a national park - a should be protected area.
Elena T — Google review
A unique landscape if nothing else but there is more. Upon finishing the well made & well maintained wooden broadwalk or if you decided to take the ground path you will end up at the last point & be treated to an impressive mountain range backdrop. Topped with long since hardened molten lava the tops are shrouded in low clouds. A mountain backdrop dropping down steeply to the Okhotsk sea & a ‘sea’ of short bamboo grass with 5 small lakes in between truly makes for a unique landscape. There was only one large lake when we went in early October as the others may have drained at that time of the year. A modest park entrance fee of ¥500 was charged for cars. Those choosing to walk on the ground track are required to pay a small fee per person but the broadwalk is free.
Chee T — Google review
This review is specifically for the Shiretoko-goko Lakes or the Shiretoko Five Lakes at the Shiretoko National Park. As a first time foreign tourist in Hokkaido, I visited this attraction this afternoon and I was impressed by the "as far as the eye can see" wooden boardwalks to see the main lake here, making it a relatively comfortable walk among nature - whereas the other four lakes are in a less accessible situation for the ordinary tourist. While this place boasts the lake(s) and its wooden boardwalks, the scenery of its surroundings is very beautiful and if you are lucky, you would be able see wildlife nearby - especially deer. So if you are in Shiretoko, I highly recommend this place for you to visit.
Edtayjb — Google review
When I visit this place, I feel like the fatigue of my long journey is gone. The fresh air and peace that cannot be expressed in words seemed to cover my whole body. It was an experience that made my mind feel comfortable with a warm and cozy atmosphere. If I have a chance, I would like to visit again and feel the emotion again. It was a beautiful place I really couldn't forget.

The tasty seafood ramen and kaisen don with fresh umi, octopus, and generous amounts of salmon roe are particularly noteworthy. Despite some confusion about its opening hours, it's worth visiting during lunchtime from 11 am to 4 pm. The small yet welcoming restaurant offers prompt service and great value for mouthwatering eats.
Sooo goooood!!!! Excellent food, everything the group had was delicious (high praise from the Japanese members of the team). Small cozy place, service was prompt and good value for great eats. We plotted how to come back this way for another meal!

The taste is wonderful, so fresh! And the price is reasonable for the fish variety, amount, and quality. The staff is busy and rushing around, but they were still friendly and polite, so I was okay with it. •Negatives: ❄️ Sea urchin season is in the summer, so they don't have it in the winter; but they didn't write that anywhere or post any signs. They did write "instead of sea urchin, we're providing fish eggs" on the menu but they didn't write why. If you're not from the area, you might not know it's out of season. Even Japanese tourists were asking about sea urchin. The staff is so rushed, they might do well to post signs clearly stating it. 🦴One of my sashimi varieties (so 2~3 pieces total) had bones in it. I don't know if this is normal for that type of fish, or maybe a Hokkaido thing as I've never been before, but that was the first time I've had bones in sashimi and I didn't enjoy it. 📜The menu is a bit confusing. There are pictures on the front but the options to make them a teishoku/plate are inside the menu. There doesn't seem to be an English menu. The staff might not have to rush around so much if they made a new menu.

Tasty seafood ramen found here. The stock is excellent. The kaisen don features fresh umi, octopus, sashimi in luxurious amounts of salmon roe. Highly recommended. The opening hours on Google mention is opened for dinner. But we came twice and it was closed. It is open during lunch 11 to 4pm. GPS guided me near to kitakobushi hotel but is actually opposite the shiretoko heritage centre

Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Shiokaze is a cozy and welcoming restaurant in Shiretoko that offers a variety of non-seafood options, making it a great choice for those who don't eat fish or seafood. The restaurant may not look like much from the outside, but inside, guests can enjoy seating at tables with floor cushions or at the bar. The menu features traditional Ainu-style Japanese dishes, including frozen salmon sashimi and sashimi sets with various types of fish.
This is a gem of japan! After travelling for one month in the country, and struggling a bit with finding good food, we landed here by chance: starving, without a reservation, and seeing zero seats available. The owner was super nice and accepted to host us for dinner on a later hour when tables wood free up. We had delicious meals: sashimi was super fresh and the taste just amazing, the bowl of rice with fish and caviar was superb, and the same can be said for their ramen and gyoza! We ended up eating there for our whole stay in the area, having fun chat with the lovely couple who owns the place. Atmosphere is great and food is authentic and good, with vibes straight from a Miyazaki movie. Prices are great as well for the high quality of food, this is a must go place if you are staying near Shiretoko national park.

The quality of the food didn't live up to the high expectations of other reviewers, and the prices weren't particularly low. This may be due to the prices and quality in the tourist area. Despite not offering anything out of the ordinary, the restaurant still attracts many bookings. The atmosphere is that of a typical izakaya with home-style cooking. Despite being run by just two people, the service was attentive and polite.

Lovely family run place with a wide selection of dishes. Not too many restaurants are open for dinner in the area, and reservations are advisable because it is a small place. Food was delicious and the staff was wonderful, especially the chef and the hostess.

Very good mostly local food served almost in your family’s kitchen . Small and intimate. Husband and Wife team serving good food in a friendly fashion but a little depressing the room nothing wrong but not very exhilarating. Having said that you don’t get much choice around here so it’s a decent option . However you must reserve as it’s very small

Museum
The Shiretoko World Heritage Centre, located near Utoro Bus Terminal, offers a fascinating experience for visitors. The center features life-size models of local animals such as brown bears and sika deer, providing valuable insights into the unique ecosystem of the National Park. Visitors can explore informative exhibits in both English and Japanese, including a short movie with English subtitles that offers an overview of the park's history, wildlife, and safety guidelines.
You can view a short film that introduces the natural environment of Shiretoko and regulations for protecting its relatively untouched beauty. The center also provides the latest information on highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage site, boat trip schedules, and real-time data on nature in the area. You can also attend lectures on Shiretoko's importance as a World Heritage site. The Utoro Shirietoku Roadside Station (michi-no-eki) next to the center, alongside National Route 334, is a great place to take a break. It houses a small souvenir shop, a fish market, a food takeout corner, and a fresh seafood restaurant.

Yūhidai Observatory is a renowned spot located on the sea side of Shiretoko National Campground, offering breathtaking views of the setting sun. It is considered one of the eight scenic views of Shiretoko and provides a spectacular vantage point overlooking the Sea of Okhotsk and Utoro Port. This popular destination is frequented by couples for romantic dates due to its picturesque setting.

Scenic Drives
Shiretoko Pass, also known as Shiretoko-toge Pass, is a must-visit spot that offers a unique experience. It is only accessible from May to early October and provides an overwhelming view of the massive Mt. Rausu as you ascend from the Utoro side. The pass features a large parking lot and restrooms for convenience.
Don’t miss this Shiretoko Pass when it is open. Whole route from Shiretoko info centre to Rausu only takes 30 mins. But you’ll get to see varieties of florals and landscape while passing the winding uphill and downhill roads. This scenic route was the highlight of my trip. Good chance to bump into wild animals like foxes and deers too. You will get up close distance to the spectacular Mount Rausu on the peak.
Chris L — Google review
This pass is not open year round and only during summer, so it's a great chance to drive across from June to August! When the view is clear, you can see the northern islands at the highest point of the pass, with the backdrop of Mt Rausu.
Rtexal T — Google review
I won't repeat what everyone wrote about the nice views. Instead I'll share one important piece of information: At some point, early on in the drive, your car is going to start humming very loudly. Why does no one mention this in their review? We totally panicked and thought our rental car was breaking down. I was coming from Utoro and continued to drive cautiously, and just around where the Shiretoko Rausu Visitor Center is located, the humming sound abruptly stopped. On the drive back, the same thing happened. From what I observed, there are these ridges along the road, which perhaps are created for added friction during icy conditions, and I think this was what was making our car hum. Another thing: On the drive toward the pass (from Shari), the car navigation system refused to acknowledge that the Shiretoko Pass was open (early June) and kept trying to guide us the long way round to Rausu. I had checked prior to our trip and was almost certain the pass was open, so ignored the car navi and used Google Map.
R S — Google review
Shiretoko Pass (知床峠, Shiretoko Tōge) sits at 738 meters atop the Shiretoko Cross-Island Road (Route 334), connecting Utoro on the west coast with Rausu on the east. This high mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramas—on clear days, you can admire Mount Rausu (1,661 meters), pristine primeval forests, the Nemuro Strait, and even Kunashiri Island in the distance. A highlight in autumn, the pass is among the first places in Hokkaido to display vibrant fall foliage, typically peaking in early October. It is also recognized as one of the “Shiretoko Eight Scenic Views.” A free parking area with space for about 66 cars and several buses allows travelers to stop easily, and there is an observation platform to fully appreciate the scenery. Access to the pass is seasonal due to heavy snowfall. It usually closes from November to late April and reopens around Golden Week. Just before the reopening, a popular “Snow Wall Walk” event allows visitors to walk between towering walls of snow cleared from the road. After the pass reopens, it is initially open only during the daytime and only when the road is free of ice.

Scenic spot
Furepe no taki Falls is a stunning natural wonder where groundwater cascades off a cliff into the sea. This rare waterfall, also known as "maiden's tears," is unique as it doesn't stem from a river but rather from rain and melting snow seeping onto the cliff. The sight of the falls is enhanced by its lush surroundings, teeming with green moss and other plant life.
Scenic view along the way to Furepe Waterfall. Many different species of flora and fauna in this area. Best to follow a guided tour to better understand and appreciate the diversity of the ecosystem here including the elusive brown bears and their favorite foods. While the waterfall may seem unimpressive in terms of volume, it is beautiful in its own ways.
Stephen T — Google review
My family and I as first time foreign tourists in Hokkaido did the trail walk at Shiretoko National Park to see Furepe Waterfall up close. The trail walk itself was quite easy, and the reward at the end was fair. Apart from a close up view of the waterfall from the "Observation Deck" nearby, you also get to see Mount Rausa in a different but also beautiful way.
Edtayjb — Google review
(Trip was in June) After our guided Shiretoko goko lakes tour, we had lunch in a seafood restaurant overlooking the beautiful coast, rested from the mid-day sun for abit then was soooo disappointed to learn that Furepe waterfall trail got closed just a while ago because of bear sighting! We downloaded the live app and checked back regularly to see if the trail would reopen while we hiked the “Deer Fence Course” and “Forest Keeper Trail”. Then from the app, we learned that Furepe trail reopened and we quickly walked over. Just 10mins into our walk, we came across a bear that popped out suddenly from the left of the path!! 🐻 it took a look at us, turning back to look at us a few more times while it continued on its way towards the shelter at the waterfall viewpoint. We were so happy, actually, and really thankful that it was a friendly bear because things could have gone really wrong too. The waterfall was very nice… it was not linked from an obvious river, so it was magical to see the waterfal coming out from the cliff to the sea! We spotted a small herd of deer too. There wasn’t many people when we were there, the trail to the lighthouse was closed as it was under renovation.
Karen T — Google review
A leisurely walk will through some forest and tall shrubs will bring you to the waterfall. I was lucky to catch sight of a Sika deer foraging near the path. You won't hear the falls until you're literally near it. There's a gazebo at the lookout point. I visited in early July-- the water is not gushing, and the source is said to be groundwater. The combination of the high cliffs, mist, and seagulls flying around really added a sense of majesty to the view. Roundtrip is around 40 minutes.
William N — Google review
The original route behind the visitor center was closed due to bear sightings. 400m from the main route was the other alternative open, and we did encounter a mid size bear walking suddenly right in front of us. It took a look at us and continue its walk. The mother and family must be nearby and freak me out. We continue the walk to the fall and did not encounter any more. Some visitors saw the poo which probably came from the same bear. The fall is not great, so skip it if you have other things to do. Oshin Koshin is more accessible and dramatic. people say tourists look for encounter with bears and locals look for avoidance ..
HngDreams H — Google review
nice trail with unique plantation and bird sound, the trail is easy, nothing special about it. the trail to the lighthouse was closed. the trail head is just outside the nature center where there are fluent english speakers!!!
Hadas C — Google review
The waterfall itself is basically non existent, you can find much larger ones just on the side of the highway with no marking, but the rest of the scenery is pretty. You’ll probably spend a lot longer getting there after parking than you will looking at it so I’d skip it, there are much more scenic areas if you keep driving north and don’t require you to walk through generic looking woods. At least it’s free and well maintained.

Oronko Rock is a massive 60m crag near Utoro port, offering stunning sea views and breathtaking sunrises. Climbing 170 steep steps leads to the summit, where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the clear blue Sea of Okhotsk and the distant Shiretoko mountain range. The rock is named after the Oronko, an aboriginal group. Although closed in winter, it's free to enter during other seasons.
A steep but doable slope.. 10 stories? I estimate but steps are quite high. Worth the view... Good work out for your legs ..
Melvin K — Google review
As a first time foreign tourist in Hokkaido, I made a climb up this Rock this morning. The steps for the ascent (and descent) were firm and good, and it was manageable for me as a 65 year old. The surrounding views going up the steps and at the top of the Rock made the climb up (then down) worth the effort.
Edtayjb — Google review
It’s a giant boulder at the Utoro bay, we walked up the stairs to get a 360° view of the sea! Many pretty wild flowers when we were there in mid-June. We watched seagulls, watched the sunset, it was beautiful!
Karen T — Google review
Definitely worth the climb to the top of the rock when the weather is good. The view is wide and open, with many seagulls flying all around.
Christo A — Google review
A litte steep. Not easy for those elder and weak. Need carefully to watch out the step. Great view when on the top of rock.
Renoir L — Google review
Entrance is roped off advising not to attempt climbing up the stairs unless snow shoes are available. Some of the stairs were slippery from snow but holding onto the rail is good enough with regular trekking boots for me. Around 100 steps give or take, so only a short hike is required. View on top of the rock is impeccable given the drift ice this year is abundant.
Joanna H — Google review
Visitors need to be aware that there's a very steep staircase climb towards the peak to reach the viewpoint. It's not easy and not suitable for children or the elderly. The views from the peak are pretty ok, and if you've an hour or so to kill. Then go for it. Otherwise, you can just give it a pass.
Nick L — Google review
It was an enjoyable little hike. It is free to enter. (I was told it is closed in winter.) The steps up can get your heart rate up but it's not that long until the top. Nice views of the town and the port area. Be careful, going up the steps are cement but of various uneven sizes. At the top the steps and boardwalk are made of wood and there are many bad spots where the wood has rotted or broken. We went at 6am before it got too hot. The lighting then was nice.

Seafood restaurant
知床かに乃家 is a roomy and relaxed eatery that serves an assortment of rice bowls adorned with an array of raw fish and prepared oceanic delicacies. This sushi restaurant provides ample space for customers to enjoy their meals in a casual atmosphere, while indulging in the delectable flavors of sashimi and cooked seafood.
Stumbled across this place after our initial plans fell through. We ordered the fried rice, buttered scallops, sashimi platter and the udon. Everything was delicious, though for the price I would probably skip the scallops next time and try something else as it was a bit of a small portion. From the reviews, we were really looking forward to the fried rice. It was delicious with a strong peppery profile which my husband loved. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the Udon which came bubbling in a small stone pot that ended up being my favourite. The broth was rich and umami with strips of cabbage, little bits of crab and pork slices. The couple were very kind and patient as we navigated through the menu with our Google translate. So glad we got to try the food on our last night in town.

Feels somewhat local, we had no other options because other restaurants were already closing (19:30~). They give service with a kind smile, the food is good and portion sizes are relatively large. Alas we were surprised to find out at the end of the meal that they only accept cash, and the price charged is higher than the sum of dishes due to consumption tax - which in other places is calculated for you in the menu. I recommend the udon, it really has everything you’d need.

Very cosy and intimate little restaurant run by an elderly couple :) The menu is in Japanese and the owners don’t speak English so ordering would be a little difficult, but there are photos of the food in english on the wall. Really delicious deshelled crab, very sweet and fresh uni, and the most amazing scallops ❤️

This place is a hidden gem. Run by a genuine and kind Japanese couple. I run into this place without any idea. The other table sits 3 local fishermen, which is a good sign if locals like it. Fried rice with crab meat is a MUST. Can’t leave this town without trying it. Amazing fresh crab and generous portion. The amberjack sashimi is gorgeous and fresh. The sea urchin was sold out so I didn’t try. But it must be popular. You can’t go wrong with this place. I should bring dorna here. Oh btw when I ordered a salmon sashimi, the owner also gives me the grilled salmon steak on the house. Really kind ppl. Love them.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Utoro Gyokyo Fujinbu Shokudo is a popular restaurant known for serving exceptional fish dishes. The quality and flavor of the fish are highly praised, leaving a lasting impression on diners. The warm and friendly staff create a welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the overall dining experience. The buffet stations offer a wide variety of dishes, including sashimi, salmon roe, and salmon pasta with cream sauce.
I wanted to order the sea urchin set but unfortunately the uni season was finished by the time we’re in the area (September). We ordered the mackerel set and the salmon oyako set for lunch. They were both very good but the mackerel was cooked superbly, best grilled whole mackerel I’ve ever had. The restaurant is run by a group of ladies and they’re very helpful and the person who brought us our food also informed me that there is free refill for the rice in mackerel set, which is nice. There’s free water and hojicha in the middle of the restaurant where guests could help themselves. Queue was long but then again we did arrive at peak lunch time.

Had some of the best and freshest seafood like sea urchins and salmon bowls here! Come early to avoid the queues and with wider selection of seafood available to choose from. This place starts getting busy and noisy with long queues by 9 and things get sold out quickly too. Very popular with locals. Not a big eatery and the ordering process can be quite chaotic especially when the staff speak little English. But they are still friendly and accommodating. Great place to stop by before heading into the far north.

must go early if you want the daily special. went around 1pm and had to queue for 30mins, only had the salmon bowl left which was delicious.

Hidden gem near Godzilla Rock and not far from Oronko Rock and Triangle Rock in Utoro. Very simple menu but the ingredients are really fresh. I had the 3-in-1 ikura don which consisted of salmon fish roe, cooked salmon and cured salmon. Very good portion and the food is delectable. Ask for the English menu before placing order. The only issue is the space in the shop is really crowded, not suitable for the elderly and families with very young children. Overall, it is value-for-money!

It was a cold and rainy day when we visited the restaurant. Since it was late in the afternoon when we arrived at Shiretoko, all other restaurants had been closed for lunch. We finally managed to get a table from this restaurant after a short wait on our car. It was real good to have a hot miso soup and grill Kinki to warm the body and fill the stomach!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant, and I can confidently say it served the best fish I've ever tasted. The quality and flavor of the fish were truly exceptional, leaving a lasting impression on my taste buds. What further enhanced my dining experience was the warm and friendly staff. Their welcoming demeanor and attentiveness made me feel right at home, creating a welcoming atmosphere that added to the overall enjoyment of the meal.

Seafood restaurant
Nestled in a charming hut known as Banya, which serves as a haven for local fishermen, this delightful seafood restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience. With its cozy atmosphere and welcoming staff, Banya Seafood stands out for its exceptional service and fresh menu options. Diners rave about the high-quality seafood, including salmon, tuna, scallops, and roe—all sourced locally to ensure freshness.
Amazing service, friendly and helpful staff and delicious fresh food, quiet and nice, cosy atmosphere. We had one vegan person in the group and were struggling to find a place for her to eat in Shiretoko, but here in Banya they had salad, tofu, beans, rice etc. and were very flexible and helpful. The best meal we had in Shiretoko. Highly recommended!

The food tasted good. We ordered the Crab/Salmon Don, some maguro, the pork brochettes and a grilled mackerel. The food felt fresh and tasted good, but the prices are expensive. We stopped here because the other restaurants were either closed or full. There is a high end hotel nearby, which might explain the prices. Unfortunately, the grilled mackerel had parasites and my companion was unable to finish their dish. The restaurant staff acknowledged it, apologized and removed it from our check.

Soba noodle shop
Last year, the temporary closure of a remote soba noodle shop prevented me from trying their delicious offerings, fueling my desire for revenge. Despite its secluded location, there was already a lineup forming before the store even opened. At 850 yen for a large serving, I found the noodles to be incredibly tasty and unlike any I had ever experienced before. Their unique firmness combined with a supple and powerful texture set them apart from ordinary noodles.

(Translated by Google) The flavor and aroma of soba is the strongest! I ordered a large serving of Mori Soba. First, eat the soba as is. The aroma of home-grown soba fills your mouth! I thought it was the best flavor I've ever had in Hokkaido. It goes down easily in the throat, and we use spring water from Raiun. According to a friend who runs a chain of soba restaurants in Hokkaido, ``The taste of soba changes depending on the water.'' ``The taste varies depending on the store, and at our store, the ◯○ store is the most delicious.'' Home-grown soba noodles and delicious water. I think it's no exaggeration to say that this is the strongest. It's very far away and there's nothing around, so you have to come here for the sake of it rather than just stopping by. It was cheap and delicious!!

But it's a soba restaurant in the countryside, so be careful not to set your expectations too high lol It can get crowded on some days, so I recommend going before opening. The owner seems a bit tired, so it seems like they've been limiting servings to 20 recently? So the Sharidake mori menu is currently on hold. It's both good and bad that it's being featured in the media 💦 It may calm down a bit once the excitement cools down, but it's a restaurant that's well supported by local fans, so please visit if you have the chance. The location was in the middle of nowhere. It was a little before 12 o'clock on a weekday, but the restaurant was already full, and there were four people waiting outside, but I was lucky and was able to enter in about 10 minutes. They don't have a system where you write your name down and wait, so it looks like you'll just have to wait patiently outside. It must be difficult in midsummer or midwinter. The soba was fragrant and delicious. I ordered the recommended large portion, which was quite a large portion and very filling. I recommend the regular size for women and children. I arrived a little after noon, but five people were already waiting outside. There was a sign at the entrance saying "Limited to 20 servings." Just to be sure, I went inside and asked the owner, who said, "We'll be fine." We waited in the heat for a while. Then, more customers arrived after us. I advised them to check with the owner, and he said it was okay for them. These people, who had heard our conversation and asked, "Are you from Nagoya?", told us they had come from Kumamoto in a small camper van, mostly on the back roads. They said they had stopped by an uncle from Nagoya on the way here, and I guess I could tell from their intonation. We were almost the last customers, so the five of us, the Kumamoto people, the owner, and I chatted about various things. The reason they limited the servings to 20 was because they had so many customers that their backs hurt. After listening to valuable stories about water and shrines, we took a commemorative photo. Godzilla Rock, located near the Utoro fishing port in Shiretoko, Hokkaido, is a popular spot for tourists. The rock resembles Godzilla and offers a unique photo opportunity. Visitors can see the rock from various angles, with some claiming it looks like Godzilla breathing fire or even resembling another monster, Gamera. However, due to safety concerns, there are signs warning about falling rocks and an iron fence surrounding the area.
Although it’s about the size of big T Rex, rather than Godzilla, it’s pretty unique site to see, by the port. Interestingly, if someone needs to name the place, it would rather difficult to think anything else. Best time to visit is during the drift ice. The frozen port will be closed, and you walk around without bothering anyone.

During your trek, keep an eye out for deer and other local fauna that add charm to your journey.
We hired some snow shoes and took ourselves off on a trek. We had hoped to see Flying Squirrels. Sadly it wasn't to be. We did hear and catch sight of the Woodpeckers though. We also watched the Deer flexing in the dying sunlight. We also watched as a red fox was hiding out just below the Deer. We couldn't decide if he was playing with them or stalking them! The visitor center is already closed by the time I arrived like 4.30ish and people were leaving. so I didnt walk around much just took picture from the front

Exciting volcano spilling activity with steam at close distance

(Translated by Google) Atosanupuri, located in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido, is an impressive spot where you can feel the heartbeat of the earth up close. The sight of white smoke rising from fumaroles and bright yellow sulfur crystals is truly another world. When I visited for the first time, I was overwhelmed by its dynamics! ①【Location and access】 Mt. Io is located about 5 minutes by car from JR Kawayu Onsen Station. If you use public transportation, you can also take a bus from the station. The parking lot is located in front of the Mt. Io MOKMOK Base, and as of May 2025, from May 1st to October 31st, there is a 500 yen fee for cars (common ticket with Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck). It is open for free from November 1st to April 30th of the following year. It's about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the fumarole, and you'll be walking on a gravel path, so comfortable shoes are recommended. ② [Facilities and services] At the ``Ioyama MOKMOK Base,'' you can purchase local specialties and souvenirs. Particularly popular are hot spring eggs made with 100% source water from Kawayu Onsen, and sweets called ``sulfur balls'' shaped like lumps of sulfur. In addition, ``Atosanupuri trekking tours'' are also held with certified guides, and you will be given special guidance to areas that are normally off-limits. This tour has received high praise, including winning the 2022 Ecotourism Award. ③【Highlights/Attractions】 The most attractive feature of Mt. Io is the white smoke rising from the more than 1,500 fumaroles and the yellow sulfur crystals that spread around it. These are designated as Teshikaga Town's ``Specified Natural Tourism Resources'' and allow you to feel the power of nature. Additionally, from June to July, the white flowers of Isotsutsuji bloom in the surrounding Tsutsujigahara, creating a magical landscape. Good souvenirs include gauze handkerchiefs with Ainu patterns, hot spring ingredients, and Yunohana glass chopstick rests. Mt. Io is a valuable spot where you can experience the power and beauty of nature firsthand. When visiting, please be careful of volcanic gas and high-temperature fumes and enjoy an extraordinary experience.

I had a boiled egg and iced coffee at a souvenir shop called MOKMOK Base. There's a large glass terrace indoors, so even if you're sensitive to the smell of sulfur or it's raining, you can enjoy Mount Io at your leisure. However, there are not many places where you can see geothermal steam up close, making it a valuable spot where you can experience the power of nature. The steam vents are extremely hot, so care must be taken as you could get burned if you accidentally touch them. The ground is also a little slippery, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. The local specialty, Mount Iou boiled eggs, sold at the gift shop, are fragrant and delicious. This is definitely a tourist attraction you should stop by when visiting the Akan-Mashu area. The surrounding scenery is yellow with sulfur. It's almost scary. It's just a short walk from the parking lot. At the nearby Moku Moku Base, you can buy souvenirs and try their famous eggs. There's a beautiful view of the mountain from the indoor terrace. The toilets are clean, too. Kitakobushi Shiretoko Hotel & Resort is a luxurious seaside hotel that offers an elegant and modern design, providing a comfortable and upscale experience. The staff's friendliness and professionalism create a welcoming atmosphere, while the spacious rooms are luxuriously decorated with stunning views. Guests can enjoy the convenience of private onsen baths in some rooms, as well as access to a buffet-style restaurant offering delicious cuisine.
Wonderful experience, I love the dinner and breakfast so much. We ate a LOT because it’s so delicious. The onsen and gym are also amazing. I would expect the gym to have a squat rack/bench rack for leg training except for the free weights. Everything else is perfect.

As a first time foreign tourist in Hokkaido, I have just stayed here for two nights at this resort in Utoro, Shiretoko. Overall, this resort lives up to its billing as a "hotel and resort" with its many nice common facilities, spacious room and generous "tie-ins" - in the case of the last, its complimentary all-day grazing and drinking with beer on tap from 1pm-10pm at its Lounge, and complimentary one ice cream scoop per night stay with its "in house" dessert shop. And talking about "in house", I enjoyed browsing and shopping at its gift shop, and using its gym. As for the room that I stayed in, all was good except that it lacked a bedside table and the lighting was quite poor in certain parts of the room. That said, I did appreciate that my room did not come with a "standard" bathtub found in hotels in Japan; instead, it had a more functional and space-saving shower cubicle. I also appreciated (as someone in his mid-60s) that I did not have to step up or down into the room's toilet whenever I wanted to use it.

The room has a lovely view overlooking the open sea and it is renovated with a modern touch. We didn’t have dinner at the hotel, as they only offered a buffet, and we’d already had plenty of those throughout Hokkaido. However, do keep in mind that there aren’t many dining options in this small town, so it’s best to plan ahead when deciding where to eat in Shiretoko. P.S The view of the public onsen and the sauna is one of the best we had in Japan.

Home over the next couple of days as we explore the wildlife around the area. Modern contemporary rooms with general grandeur throughout the property. The restaurant team certainly cooks up a storm and runs an amazing gastronomic array using the freshest ingredients and covering all the bases of mainly Japanese (sashimi, sushi, tempura) with some international dishes (venison ragu pasta). With robots and well-orchestrated teamwork, I would imagine all guests certainly went away satisfied and impressed.

Nice hotel on a convenient location to visit the Shiretoko National Park. Pretty large rooms with comfortable beds. Nice facilities including public bath and big lounge area with free drinks. The buffet restaurant is a bit price for in my opinion.

Our stay at Kitakobushi Resort was nothing short of exceptional. The resort boasts tastefully appointed accommodations. The staff demonstrated exceptional attentiveness and helpfulness. The onsen bath offers an array of amenities, is immaculate, and provides breathtaking views. The Life Table buffet is a culinary delight, featuring high-quality, delectable dishes that consistently surprise and delight. The guest lounge is comprehensive and well-stocked. The resort’s prime location is ideal, conveniently situated near the UNESCO Natural Heritage site. Additionally, the hotel provides comprehensive information on visiting the Shiratoko Pass and the numerous hiking trails in the surrounding area.

Very pricey but the dinner and breakfast were really good. The rooms are clean too, and the onsen bath are also 👍🏻👍🏻 BTW the interior and design looks almost the same as Kiki (guess they belong to the same group) but it’s a level of luxury above. Services are generally ok.

Remote luxury hotel at the edge of the national park. Note that the town itself isn't much of a town in winter - it's really just a few convenience stores and a visitor's centre. But you don't need anything because this hotel is awesome! It's a self contained resort with a buffet restaurant, shop, onsen, gym and chocolate cafe. The remoteness of the location is extremely relaxing and you can stare out at the ocean all day, in between your national park expedition and activities. The buffet dinner and breakfast is also worth mentioning as it's not your average lazy buffet. Most dishes are cooked and made to order in front of you, and presented beautifully. Service is friendly and efficient. The rooms are huge and comfortable. The lobby is pure luxury and the free drinks in the lounge are generous. It's really a hotel that I genuinely enjoyed staying at, and my favourite in all of Hokkaido. Highly recommended and I look forward to returning here in the future!
