Rishirifuji-cho in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Rishirifuji-cho, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Rishirifuji-cho, on Rishiri Island off Hokkaido’s northern coast, is known for its striking views of Mount Rishiri, a volcano that inspired the design of the Mt. Rishiri depicted on Japan’s 1,000-yen note. Visitors come for hiking and trekking on well-marked mountain and coastal trails within Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, as well as cycling routes that circle the island. The area is also noted for its rich marine life, with popular activities including fishing and sampling local seafood such as sea urchin and kelp. Clear air, relatively cool summers, and starry night skies add to its appeal as a quiet, nature-focused getaway.
With favorites like Mount Rishiri, Himenuma Observatory, and Pon Yama, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ajisai Kawaichi and Rishiri Kameichi so you can get the best taste of Rishirifuji-cho while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Otatomari Swamp is a picturesque location, renowned for its crystal-clear waters that reflect the nearby Mt. Rishiri volcano. This scenic spot boasts a souvenir shop and offers free parking, as well as access to toilets and restaurants during peak season. The stunning scenery features a pond in the foreground with Mt. Rishiri towering majestically in the background, providing an ideal vantage point to view both lake and mountain together.
Was incredible when I visit. Lots of seagulls flying above the lake. Amazing views.

too bad we arrive on the heels of a storm and the volcano cone was completely obscured by clouds and mists. With the right sunlight the reflection of the mountain ( snow capped in winter) onto the pond must be heavenly, in fact even the Japanese Emperor himself had to come to take a look. Hope they booked the weather in advance

Absolutely breathtaking. Even tho it's the off peak season but I think this is the perfect time to see. We were the only ones there. There's snow capped mountain, autumn trees, cool weather. Prefer this to himenuma pond. We were very blessed to have a clear day. 26oct 2.30pm

One of the more popular spot on the Risihiri island, there are a number of seafood sellers. It's a bliss to enjoy the seafood while taking in the good views on a good day. There's also a scenic white deck at the lake which is a splendid photo spot. There's a small roadside station here too! Plenty of parking spots at this location.

Very nice walk around the swamp. Be careful of the poison ivy. Beautiful flowers and some good ice cream from the restaurant.

Great place for a stopover...nice view of Mt Rishiri and they have a good place for grilled scallop, grilled squid and fresh uni (sea urchin), and ice cream.

Minamihama Wetland

4.1
(115)
Nature preserve
Minamihama Wetland, located on Rishiri Island, is a serene and less crowded spot compared to other nearby attractions. The wetland features a small parking lot that gives it a meadow-like appearance and offers two walking courses for visitors to explore. Despite its compact size, each trail showcases different faces and plants, making it an intriguing destination for nature enthusiasts. The area is known for its precious plant life, providing a healing experience amidst the tranquility of the wetland.
(Translated by Google) This is my favorite place on Rishiri Island. Unlike Otatomari and Himenuma, there is only a small parking lot that looks like a meadow, so groups do not come here. Due to its small scale, we recommend taking both walking courses. I was conscious of my time and only walked the trail in front of me, but I regret that because each trail had a different expression and the plants growing on it looked different. Although it is quiet and small, it is a quaint wetland.

(Translated by Google) This is my favorite place on Rishiri Island. Since it was not part of the regular sightseeing bus route, I rented a car for 3 hours. There is no parking lot for large buses, so groups cannot come. Although it is a small wetland, I was able to take a photo of ``Upside Down Rishiri Fuji''. There were no souvenir shops and there weren't many people, so I was able to enjoy a quiet stroll.

(Translated by Google) It's "Japan's only wetland where high-altitude moors and low-altitude moors, like Asian skunk cabbage, coexist." It's said to have been formed when water accumulated in the remains of a volcanic crater and the coast subsequently retreated. I worked part-time in Kutsugata for a week. I was basically on a 9-to-5 schedule, but I had one half-day off, so I decided to cycle around Rishiri Island. The 60km loop around Rishiri Island isn't too steep, so if you're determined, you can cycle around it in about two hours. But since I'd come all the way, I decided to take it easy (lyrics/music by Mike Maki), and made a few emergency landings along the way, completing the cycle in about four and a half hours. I set off on my bike at 1:00 PM. After about 10 minutes of riding, Rebun Island disappeared from view, and I continued south, gazing at the Sea of Japan. There was little traffic, and the road didn't feel particularly dangerous. After a leisurely hour and a half, I reached Minamihara Marsh. It was a completely deserted and quiet place. There are no convenience stores on the way from Kutsugata to here. Please use the vending machines for drinking water. I borrowed a bicycle from work, but rental bicycles are also available. I rode on a little after September 20th. When I left Kanto, it was hot even in short sleeves, but it was quite cold on Rishiri Island, with the morning temperature being 13°C. Even by noon the temperature hadn't risen much, and I felt chilly while riding. A windbreaker is a must, even in summer. Looking at this photo now reminds me of the smell of the air at that time, and I get the illusion that my skin temperature has dropped. The Numaura Observatory offers a stunning view of Mt. Rishiri and the nearby ocean and islands. There is free parking available, but tourists should take caution when navigating the one-lane road leading to the observatory. (Translated by Google) A facility that displays materials mainly related to the local history of Rishiri Island. You can feel the history of life on the island. To be honest, the exhibits are generally modest, and I feel that the town museum to the south is more complete, but the building itself is historic, having been built as the Oniwaki Village Hall in 1920, and its location It has a very nice atmosphere that is typical of a local museum. However, there is nothing glamorous about it for tourists, so I don't think it's suitable for people who have no interest in the local history of the area. Also, there are no other shops or cafes where you can take a break in the area, so be careful if you are expecting such facilities. Despite their cold winters, summers can be surprisingly warm, reaching temperatures as high as 32 degrees Celsius.

Totally worth a visit if you are in Wakkanai. I was only going to Wakkanai to see Cape Soya but thanks to a friendly passenger on the train ride over from Sapporo, I learned all about this island. He got super excited about Mt. Rishiri in the distance as we approached Wakkanai Station. I thought nothing of it until he pointed to a map he was carrying that explained it’s a volcano. I was just at Sakurajima the week before, and the idea of having seen one of the southern most volcanoes in Japan, why not see the Northern most volcano. I arrived at 12:50pm, checked in and quickly ran to the Heartland Ferry Terminal, and with only 10mins to spare, I was on the last ride to Rishiri. Keep in mind the ferry takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, one way. So it only runs a limited number of times a day. In the winter, it’s 1:55pm last ride to the island. And 5:30pm last trip back from the island. The ferry ride was awesome, highly recommend chilling on the outdoor deck, no one out there, not cold at all. Nice privacy. S As we approached Rishiri, its snow covered peak looked sharp and mighty. As we prepared for docking, you get a sweet view of the mountain, totally unobstructed. Sadly, unlike Sakurajima, no taxi’s were waiting for us. Despite that, I wandered around a bit on foot, but because I had a return ticket for 5:30pm, I had to hang around and not go too far. Little town near the dock. There is a cool cliffside as well, wish I had more time to explore. Go, have fun, you will like. Maybe more so in the spring and fall 😅

(Therefore, I cannot comment on the rooms or accommodation) The dining area is divided into three main areas: (1) the front right is the kitchen and counter, (2) the opposite side has raised seating across the aisle, and (3) the back is a raised table and chairs for groups. There are two toilets, one for ① and ② where you can go with your shoes on, and the one for ③ where you can go without shoes. It was perfectly delicious. Rishiri Kameichi is a charming souvenir shop nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Otatomari on Rishiri Island, located in northern Hokkaido. This delightful spot offers visitors a chance to indulge in local delicacies and pick up unique souvenirs. During my visit, I savored the Shiroi Koibito Soft Cream, which was both light and rich—a perfect treat during our sightseeing break.
This shop sells many local souvenirs, as well as ice cream and uni sushi. They sell the islands Montbell t shirts as well, which we enjoy collecting all over japan. The shop staff were helpful and friendly. We bought ice cream for our dogs here, who also enjoyed the stop!

We didn't have enough room in our stomachs to try the very nice food here but given the proximity to the "shiroi koibito" mountain we had to try their ice creams and they were delicious! Wow the special sundae was creamy and had nice sweetness and tartness from the fruit.

(Translated by Google) Visited 2024.8.11 If you want to taste sea urchin, Gunkanmaki is better. I ate two pieces of Murasaki Gunkanmaki for 1,800 yen and a mini bafun bowl for 4,600 yen. When I came here 20 years ago, even Bafun was 3,000 yen and every inch of the bowl was filled with sea urchin, so now it's so expensive that I feel sad. However, ever since I learned about Rishiri's sea urchin, it is so delicious that other sea urchins feel a little disappointing. I heard from a local grandmother that the kelp they feed on is bad due to global warming. The flavor is richer and more delicious than the sea urchin I had at Shakotan in Hokkaido. Both Bafun and Murasaki have large grains and a strong flavor. At the shop in front of the ferry, the bafun bowl was 10,000 yen, so I think this place is recommended because it's a little cheaper and you can choose the variety.

Nestled in the charming Oniwaki district, Ueda is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable culinary experience. To find this delightful spot, simply head towards the ocean from the post office and follow Route 108. The menu boasts a variety of mouthwatering dishes, including delectable summer shellfish and crispy fried eggplant that will leave your taste buds dancing with joy.
(Translated by Google) It seems that the location information on Google Maps is now correct. A valuable shop open in the evening in the Oniwaki district. It is run by the owner and a woman. I ordered fried oysters and salt ramen, and both were delicious! (By the way, salt ramen is apparently more recommended than soy sauce lol) However, the portions are large, so be careful if you eat less! The owner was kind, and even though I was nervous when I entered the restaurant alone, I was able to talk to her and enjoy my meal in a relaxed manner. Since there are only two people working, it takes a little longer to serve food and drinks. However, it moves quickly and I don't get frustrated by the slowness. I would like to use it again when I come to Rishiri Island. (Original) 今はGoogleマップの位置情報合っているようです。 鬼脇地区で夕方に開いている貴重なお店。 店主と女性の方2人で切り盛りされてます。カキフライと塩ラーメンを頼みましたが、どちらも美味しかったです! For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Yuhigaoka Observation Deck, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Kanro spring. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

The Yuhigaoka Observation Deck is a popular landmark on Rishiri Island, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding areas including Hokkaido and Rebun Islands. The deck offers an easy access to visitors, even children can make it to the observation platform. It is a great spot to witness both sunrise and sunsets, although it may not give the best view of Mt. Rishiri.
The Yuhigaoka Observation Deck offers a beautiful view, making it a fantastic spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. On a clear day, you can see Rebun Island in the distance, adding to the stunning panorama of the surrounding coastline and sea. Be prepared for the windy conditions, as the area can get quite breezy, especially at the top of the deck, which only adds to the feeling of being high up in nature. The deck is accessible via manmade steps that lead up from the parking area, offering a short but enjoyable climb to the top. The parking area is free, which is always a plus, though it is unpaved, so visitors should take care when parking, especially if it’s wet. There is plenty of space for vehicles, so finding a spot is usually not a problem.

Visited this wonderful landmark in winter. A local had been so kind to break trail a few hours earlier halfway up, but then the powder snow rose to waist deep before getting shallower at the top. We soldiered on to the top, slowly but gradually and enjoyed a very windy view of Rishiri and the local hardwear store opposite the observation deck where great specials are to be had on ice shovels and rakes. You can see Hokkaido and Rebun Islands from this point :)

Hiking area
Pon Yama, a small peak adjacent to Mount Rishiri, offers a pleasant 30-45 minute hike from Mount Rishiri's 3rd Station or a 60-90 minute trek from Hime Pond. The summit provides an impressive view of Mt. Rishiri and its lush green slopes, with the possibility of observing insects and mushrooms during summer. On clear days, visitors can even catch sight of Rebun Island in the distance.
What a beautiful view! We went up on a cloudy day so we could only see the bottom of the mountain, but it was still beautiful. Would recommend wearing hiking boots as there are rocks and roots throughout the trail, which is somewhat narrow.

This is the best view (imho) on the island of Mt Risihiri at a fairly close distance overlooking unblocked views of superb greenery on the slopes of the mountain on top of this Pon Yama hill. On the wall up Pon Yama, there's also lots of insects and mushrooms (in summer) to observe! If the view is clear, you can see the entire Rebun Island in the distance too (one of the picture).

Quite campsite and often empty. It’s 3minute by car from yuni campsite. It’s the trailhead for Mount rishiri-Fuji trail / mountain pon. Same price for a tent as yuni campsite. There is a nearby large parking lot that is free (the campsite also have a parking, but a bit pricy 2600 yen per night). Tent camping is 520 yen per adult. We didn’t end up staying here (we prefers yuni because you can park your car in front of your tent..), But we ended up using the shower at this campsite for 100 yen per adult. The showers are clean and with hot water. Recommended !

Kanro spring water is located about 20 minutes away from the ferry terminal. Visitors can find information about it only at the entrance to the foot of the mountain. To reach this destination, one needs to stop at Rishiri North Foot Camp and walk for an additional 20 minutes along a well-maintained road with slight ups and downs. It's a nice store, the only problem being the fact that this store is single handedly run by one person who acts as the chef, the waiter, the management... Basically Gordon Ramsays's worst nightmare one could say. Very nice host but sadly the food is not at all up to the mark. Half of the food I had turned out to be extremely salty or tasteless. I hope he hires some staff to help him. He seems extremely overworked :(

(Translated by Google) I never thought I'd find such delicious Chinese food on the outskirts of Japan! This was the second restaurant I visited on my trip. From the outside, I wondered if they were open, but the noren curtain was up, so I gave in. I didn't have a reservation, but...I managed to get a seat at the counter just in time. I ordered the Shrimp Chili with Egg Gomoku Ramen Rice (medium). It took a while for my food to come, probably because the restaurant was crowded. (I waited for about 20 minutes while drinking, so it didn't bother me...) One after another, locals? Tourists? came in, but they gave up and left. It was incredibly popular. I tried it and I was convinced! The shrimp in the Shrimp Chili were plump and big! Plus, it was a little spicy, which made it a great choice for rice. The gomoku ramen, soup, and gomoku were all impeccable. If it were in a city, I'm sure it would be a popular restaurant that would make it into the top 100 restaurants. If you come to Rishiri Island, the one dish you absolutely must try is the shrimp chili here! I've been all over the country, but this was the first time I've been surprised in a while🫢 (Original)

Izakaya restaurant
Rikimaru is a delightful dining spot that truly captures the essence of Taiwanese hospitality. On a recent visit during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I arrived just before 5 PM and left feeling completely satisfied by 7:15 PM. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy as tables quickly filled up, and I was greeted by a warm and friendly staff member who made ordering easy despite my limited Japanese skills—thank goodness for translation apps!
*Visited 4 years ago ¥8000-¥9000 range (was there for several hours, 2 people) I guess my experience 4 years ago was much different than those to more recent reviewers. I don’t know if I can help the situation at all. It seems like maybe through the experience of previous guests (mostly foreign), the owners have now started to refuse service to foreign tourists (a previous reviewer mentions being angry about the table charge and they thought the appetizer was free). Unfortunately that’s typically not how it works at izakaya and a table charge is often applied. The otoshi (appetizer) is a simple gesture which often infers there is a table charge. Long story, but 4 years ago we came in off the street as every other izakaya was totally booked. The couple the owned they placed sat us right up front at the bar and over 3.5 hours through our broken Japanese we had an amazing time. Great sake, great food. We tried everything they recommended. I’m sorry for those who had unfavourable experiences in recent years, but I figured I’d throw my two cents in with my experience. Hopefully things may get better
Zachary M — Google review
The food is very tasty and there is a menu in English. The girl serving the tables speaks a little bit of English. However, I was unhappy overall. As soon as I sat down, before any order, I was served a sepia bowl, which should have been a little starter offered for free. Since the bill was higher than I expected, and only the total amount was written, I asked for explanation to the owner lady. She reacted as if that question was a big offense, she showed a confused piece of paper, and explained with gestures that I had to pay for the appetizer I did not actually order. It wasn't a pleasant experience: I went away disappointed, with the feeling of being cheated and harshly treated.

We were turned away although there were available seats, and the Japanese woman after us got in. We do speak Japanese so it seems that the owner does not accept non-Japanese customers. Do not bother and just go to the curry place across the street where you will get a warm welcome and delicious meals!

The place was barely half full and they refused service, presumably because we were foreigners. To make it worse, they were rude about it. 👎🏼

I was lucky and never got turned away, but it's true that when it gets busy, some customers are turned away and have to leave. I think this is because the chef and the proprietress are busy cooking, serving, and taking orders. I think they turn people down in advance to avoid customers who can't be served due to overcapacity. In return, the food served is very delicious and the price is very reasonable for the taste. As others have written, at first glance you might think he's a difficult person, but his smile shows his gentle and gentle side. He becomes silent while cooking. I think he is a very serious person who is serious about cooking. The food I ate at Rikimaru-san will be a very good memory, and I think it's a place that makes you realize the charm of eating out. Please try it without making a phone reservation and be tolerant. (They're busy on the phone and can't respond...) Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Sato Shokudo is a delightful culinary gem that offers an impressive unidon, which is a rice bowl topped with sea urchin. Sandipan G — Google review
Very expensive. Unidon with little uni. Hokke set was better. This will be my last visit.
Karl H — Google review
Overpriced and not friendly (esp to foreigners, even if you speak Japanese). Bafun uni cost 8,000 yen and Murasaki 5,000 in 2022. Seaweed ramen was 1,300. Even though it's a year of low harvest, we had better and more reasonably priced sea urchins at our hotel and on Rebun island. Service or the lack thereof was very abrasive, and I'm someone who thinks the usual Japanese service a bit excessive. The only merit is being close to the ferry terminal. Maybe that's why it's a bit of a tourist trap. When we returned the car the locals recommended the ramen shop next door for delicious food nearby. Wish we had known.
Momo H — Google review
Tried their unidon which was fairly priced at 3500 yen and it was excellent! The lady in the place seemed a little aggressive so I thought maybe the food would fall short of expectations however she did tell me the don is a mix of $$$ orange Ezo-Bafun or Kaze uni and Murasaki uni (light straw colored, cheaper type). What I got was generous portions of each and the Kaze uni was high quality fresh and not partially melted. Side dishes were excellent with a local konbu dish. This restaurant is at the far left, at the end of the block of stores/restaurants, when you exit the front of the ferry terminal. It is not the one in the middle that advertises the kelp/seafood ramen. Be wary as many places show pics of the Kaze orange uni but you end up getting Murasaki uni, not so much on Rishiri or Rebun but on mainland Hokkaido such as Wakkanai.

Mountains
Mount Rishiri is a volcanic island located off the coast of Hokkaido, offering a challenging climbing route and a summit shrine. The island is home to various tourist attractions such as Rishirifuji Otatomari Marsh, Hime Marsh, and Shiroi Koibito no Oka. Visitors can also enjoy cycling courses, water sports, and the popular Rishiri Yu-Yu Running marathon.
A beautiful hike, worth summiting for. Make sure you track the weather daily to be able to hike this mountain on a sunny day; there were still clouds rolling through, but was able to reach the summit with sunshine. I hiked up the Oshidomari trail, which took about 9 hrs back and out. Not too many people on the hike in the beginning of June, and most people left at around 5/6 am. I left at 8:30am and had plenty of light to hike back down. The ascent is easier, in my opinion, with a lot of rock scrambling towards station 7 onward. Hiking poles would’ve made the descend easier since there is a lot of loose rock. ** maybe it was the season for it, but many flies up at the summit. Only lasted about 2 min there. 🪰
Aja B — Google review
Started at 6:30am, at the peak at 10:00am. Usually takes longer but such a beautiful hike, well maintained by the rangers and saw lots of birds, chipmunks and different insects. Just be careful of the horse flies near the top that try to bite you. Wear sunscreen even if it looks like it’s cloudy, can get hot. Hiked end of July.
Roberto H — Google review
The ascent to the summit of Mt Rishiri is one of the most spectacular hikes in all of Hokkaido. The views from the top are absolutely stunning, that is if you are lucky and the sky is clear. To get there is a rough and steep hike, first through forest, later through shrubs and ravines. The ascent is about 1,500 meters of altitude and it took us 3,5 hours to get up there from the trail head. From the top, you can see Rebun island, Hokkaido mainland, and even the Sakhalin islands. But the best views are down the slopes at the wild volcanic landscapes of Rishiri. At the summit, the temperature was around 10 degrees celsius in mid-July, so we had a quick lunch break before descending. We took it slowly on the way down, so the overall hiking time with breaks was about 7 hours. The trailhead can be reached from the ferry terminal in about 10 minutes by car. Your local accommodation will likely be able to arrange transportation. Note that there are no toilets along the trail, so better bring disposable single use toilets. They are sold at convenience stores in Rishiri township.

Mount Rishiri, also known as Rishirifuji, is one of the most stunning and memorable mountains I have ever visited in Japan. I had seen it many times during my road trips across Hokkaido, often appearing majestically on the horizon, but it was only on October 21, 2023, my 719th day as an ALT under the JET Programme, that I finally had the chance to climb it. For this hike, I was with the Tomamae Gang, Matsushita-sensei, and Jon, and it took months of planning and preparation before we set foot on the trail. The hike itself was both challenging and rewarding. The paths are well-marked but steep, and the climb requires endurance and patience. As we ascended, the scenery changed dramatically, starting from lush forests at the base, passing volcanic rock formations, and reaching open alpine zones with sweeping views. The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the sights became. At certain points, we could look back and see the endless blue of the Sea of Japan surrounding the island, and in the distance, Rebun Island appeared like a floating landmass. Reaching the summit was an unforgettable experience. Standing at the peak, with the cold wind against us and the 360-degree panoramic view stretching endlessly, felt like a moment of triumph after months of anticipation. The climb tested our strength and perseverance, and sharing this experience with friends made it even more meaningful. Mount Rishiri is more than just a mountain. It is a natural landmark that defines the island and leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits. Admiring its perfect cone shape from the coastline or challenging yourself to reach the summit will make the trip unforgettable. The mountain’s beauty, history, and unique presence make it one of the must-see destinations in Japan.
Neil A — Google review
The climb is a bit tough, 1700m in a day over 5km! Erosion is a major challenge near the summit, but the local community is doing a great job in mitigating the effects of the hordes of walkers walking up to the summit.
Daojia N — Google review
Great hike with panoramic views. Doable in 1 day but will need to be in shape. Make sure you take a bath in the hot spring if you plan to stay on the island.

Scenic spot
Nestled at the base of Mount Rishiria, Himenuma Pond is a picturesque spot surrounded by untouched woodland. A leisurely one-hour hike along an 800-meter path offers ever-changing views throughout the seasons, from lingering snow to vibrant foliage. On clear days, visitors may witness the enchanting sight of an inverted reflection of Rishiri Fuji on the pond's surface.
Very nice walk around a pond. if you catch it right, you can take a nice reflective shot of the mountain. unfortunately, it was foggy when we went.

The Himenum Swamp is a nice stop after traveling for a couple of hours. You have a chance to stretch your legs while taking in some of the local scenery.
The V — Google review
A pretty, photogenic spot when there's still snow on Mt Rishiri. Come on less windy days to see the reflection in the pond (pics were taken in mid June). Free entrance with plenty of parking spaces. One can take a short walk around the whole pond.
Eugene W — Google review
On 18 Sept 2025, my wife and I drove here. In 20 minutes, we walked around the pond once. The circumstances were such that we couldn’t take any scenic photos.

Would be great on a clear day. The path looks fully paved and there are toilets

Came here part of the bus tour that circles the island. Very nice and easy walk around the pond on top of a wooden walkway. There is a small gift shop selling some photos, postcards, woodwork, and more
Aja B — Google review
A decent view of Mt Risihiri from here, with the main highlight as the pond. There's a small hut where a photographer sells his wonderful photos taken on the island across seasons.
Rtexal T — Google review
Himenuma Pond is located on Rishiri Island around five kilometers from the Oshidomari ferry terminal; it is a small pond with a circumference of around one kilometer. There are footpaths round the edge of the pond, and visitors can enjoy strolling round. Here is a popular tourist attraction, and is well-known as a beautiful view of reflection of the reversed Mt. Rishirifuji on the water of the pond. A cycling road and a hiking course are built near here. Himenuma Obseravation Deck (姫沼展望台) is on the way to the Himenuma Pond, and a sea view can be seen.

Himenuma Observatory is a picturesque spot located on a hill along the road to Himenuma, offering stunning views of Rishirifuji Town, Oshidomari Bay, and Cape Peshi. From this vantage point, visitors can also admire Mt. Rishiri and even catch a glimpse of neighboring Rebun Island and the vast ocean beyond.

(Translated by Google) 2024.07.02 Although the name is Himenuma Observatory, you cannot see Himenuma. What you can see is the sea to the north, with Cape Beshi and Rebun Island in the distance. The signboard mentions Cape Noshap and Sakhalin, but visibility is not very good due to tall vegetation. To begin with, Sakhalin is 100 kilometers away!! Can you see it? However, Taiwan can be seen from Yonaguni, so if the conditions are right, you might be able to see Sakhalin!

Rishiri Island, also known as Rishirito, is a remote and picturesque island located about 20 kilometers off the northern coast of Hokkaido. The island boasts a circumference of approximately 60 kilometers and features Mount Rishiri, a dormant volcano at its center. Together with neighboring Rebun Island, it forms part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park.

We camped at the base of Mt. Rishirifuji. The camp site has a common area with wifi. The washrooms are clean and equipped with washlets and heated seats. The camp site however doesn't provide rental items. There are also wooden cabins for rent that come equipped with futon. There is enough parking space near the camping site.

The park features multiple camping and tent areas, along with convenient facilities such as a kitchen and coin laundry. Visitors can also explore the observation deck, souvenir shop, visitor center, and lighthouse nearby. The park's proximity to Kutsugata Port makes it an ideal spot for taking leisurely walks and enjoying breathtaking sunsets.
A nice little park that's pretty nice for kids to run around. The lighthouse is right in the middle and on a good day you might get a nice view of Risihiri mountain, though this is not the best spot to view it.

Ramen restaurant
If you find yourself on Rishiri Island, make sure to stop by Isoyakitei, a charming eatery conveniently situated right across from the Oshidomari Ferry Terminal. This delightful restaurant is renowned for its delectable seafood offerings, including their signature Rishiri ramen made with local kelp and an array of fresh ingredients like sea urchin and scallops. The flavors are rich and satisfying, making it a perfect pitstop during your island adventures.
Friendly staff. Good ambience; family run restaurant. Uni is really fresh.

Friendly family run restaurant. We took the original Rishiri Ramen. It was à good size for the price and it contained shrkmp, scallop, pork and seaweed. Would definetly eat again, only wish there were more seafood in the bowl.

Enjoy a wide variety of seafood, including ramen made with Rishiri kelp and fresh sea urchin and scallop rice bowls. Everything is richly flavored and highly satisfying. (Translated by Google) Since I was on Rishiri Island, I wanted to finish off my trip with some sea urchin, but another restaurant told me they didn't serve sea urchin bowls, so I almost gave up. However, I was delighted to hear "Yes, they do!" at Isoyakitei! I agonized over what to order, so I went ahead and ordered it. The rich, melt-in-your-mouth sea urchin transported me to a world of satisfaction. The price was a splurge of ¥7,500, but I heard it was ¥10,000 until August, so it felt like a good deal. I visited on September 24th, and since the sea urchin fishing season ended today, the price would go up again from tomorrow. I was able to enjoy it just in time for the season, and I was very satisfied.
