Basco Lighthouse, a stunning landmark on the island of Batan, is a must-visit for anyone seeking breathtaking views and rich history. Ascend the spiral staircase to the 5th-floor deck, where you can soak in panoramic vistas of Baluarte Bay, Basco town, Mount Iraya, and the lush rolling hills that define this picturesque landscape.
Breathtaking views and an absolute must-see in Batanes! The Basco Lighthouse offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the sea. There's a souvenir shop nearby where you can grab some local items to take home. You need to register upon arrival, so make sure you have an accredited tour guide with you.

I love the ambiance on the viewing deck of the lighthouse. The staff at the souvenir shop was lively and friendly. Great landscape. Amazing scenery.
Darwin D — Google review
To go up, you need to climb 5 flights of stairs. From up there, you can see the Basco town proper. In the open field near the area are plants named with the Ms. Batanes candidates.
Marc J — Google review
The lighthouse was spectacular. The wall arts are great. All basco can be seen in 360 if you are on the top of the house.

22 Sep 2024. My Northern Tour started around 2pm and this was the last destination. Upon arriving, you will be met by a huge "I [heart] Batanes" picture area. The view deck is on the fourth floor (the fifth floor houses the light, but is a prohibited area), and each floor has a mural. This being a lighthouse, the open sea is an obvious view (west), but you can also see Batanes Pier, the Chawa view deck, and even Mt. Matarem to the south, the municipal cemetery and the town proper to the east, and, as with any other destination of the Northern Tour, Mt. Iraya. When I came back a few days, after TS Julian, the lighthouse was understandably closed, but the view remains magnificent.

a beacon of wonder in this picturesque island paradise. I had the pleasure of visiting this iconic landmark during my recent trip, and it left me truly mesmerized. First and foremost, the location is awe-inspiring. Perched atop a lush hill, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the vast Pacific Ocean and the rugged cliffs of Batanes. The surrounding landscape is a photographer’s dream come true, with rolling hills and vibrant greenery. The lighthouse itself is a charming piece of architecture. Its classic white facade and the soothing hum of its guiding light create a sense of tranquility that’s hard to put into words. I spent hours simply gazing at it, trying to capture its timeless beauty with my camera. One of the highlights of my visit was the chance to climb to the top of the lighthouse. The view from there was simply breathtaking. The wind tousled my hair as I took in the 360-degree panorama, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for the natural beauty of Batanes. The Basco Lighthouse is also a great spot to learn about the history and culture of Batanes. There’s a small museum on the premises that showcases the island’s maritime heritage and the role of lighthouses in guiding sailors to safety. In conclusion, the Basco Lighthouse is a must-visit destination in Batanes. It’s a place where nature and history come together to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking serenity, this lighthouse has something to offer everyone. Don’t miss the chance to be enchanted by its guiding light.

This was the lighthouse that I missed out on the tour we had in 2018. Im glad I was able to see it this time. It is located near the town of Basco and situated on the area where the American bunkers were. This is also included in the North Batan Tour. Note: There is a toilet on this site.

Basco Rolling Hills, also known as Vayang Rolling Hills or Marlboro Hills, is a picturesque hilly area in Batanes. It offers stunning views of the ocean and Mt. Iraya, with grazing animals like cows and goats adding to the scenic beauty. Visitors can explore farms alongside grazing lands at Vayang Rolling Hills and take selfies with cows at Rakuh a Payaman while enjoying the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
22 Sep 2024. My Northern Tour started around 2pm and this was the fourth destination. From here, you will see blue ocean to the north and the west, more rolling hills to the south, and Mt. Iraya to the east. According to my guide, most of the hills are brown during the summer because of the heat, so I am glad to have visited in the rainy months during this rainy part of the year. And with this much greenery, the cows that dot the hills happily grazing are an even nicer thing to see. I prefer to call this Vayang Rolling Hills as that is what I saw in the signs in my post-tour walks, though.
Glenn G — Google review
Surreal! We went there via tricycle (10 minute ride), but we saw a lot of joggers going there. I think it would be a good exercise to jog going up if you have free time. We love the view and the fresh air!
Gem B — Google review
Super awesome view 🥺 I like it that it's windy during our visit. We even went back here on our last day to watch sunset. The place itself has a relaxing and calming effect. Would go back here in the future!
Edrea P — Google review
The Vayang Rolling Hills are one of the most picturesque sights in the Batanes province. Covered in verdant grass and patches of green trees. Don't wear hat or caps because the wind is very strong.
Jonahs T — Google review
It's really beautiful here. Definitely a must-visit when in Batanes. You can also walk or bike if you want to explore without a guide. We were just unlucky because of Typhoon Julian, but we were supposed to go again for the sunset.
Aira A — Google review
Very refreshing in the eyes. Sadly, we didn’t saw the sunset because of the unpredictable weather but it’s all good. The scenery here is so majestic, it’s free, no entrance fee whatsoever. This month is still a bit chilly so I recommend bring a jacket just in case you need to get warm. Overall, bucket list checked ✅

Basco Airport, Philippines

Domestic airport
Basco Airport, located in the capital of Batanes - Basco, serves as the main gateway to the stunning Batanes group of islands. The airport is made of large boulders, reflecting the traditional stone houses found in the area. It accommodates small passenger planes from Manila, Tuguegarao, and Itbayat Island.
One of the most aesthetically designed airports that I've seen. Very cool! 😎
Luwi — Google review
The airport has the same vibe with the iconic rock houses of Batanes. It's just a quaint airport with only 1 boarding area, and 1 baggage carousel. The boarding area is airconditioned and has a water dispenser. It also only has a few stores open — 1 souvenir shop and 1 sari-sari store for food.
Marc J — Google review
While it may be expected, it remains fascinating that this airport is constructed mainly from rocks. It’s a modest facility with straightforward services, located just a short drive from the town proper.
Eizen B — Google review
The airport's facade in Basco is designed like their stone houses. It is a small airport and is clean and well managed. We did not encounter any difficulty in arriving and departing Batanes. Inspection was thorough and checking in was fast. The place was not so busy because they only had one flight from Manila during our trip. They will be having 2 flights soon.
Travel T — Google review
It’s nice, small airport scaled on the area of the island. No hassles ☺️

Small airport enough for a small island. Awesome view of Mt. Iraya as backdrop. Structure inspired by their very own stone houses. With pasalubong stores inside ;) Open for all in the afternoon around 5pm, great for jogging.

Valugan Boulder Beach is a unique and photogenic spot in Basco, Batanes. Instead of sand, the shoreline is covered with boulders of igneous rocks that were spewed by Mt. Iraya during its volcanic activity long ago. The constant waves from the West Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean have polished these boulders into smooth stones over time.
Vulugan Boulder Beach is one of my favorite destinations in Batanes, right next to Basco Rolling Hills! I absolutely give it a 5/5. The beach is incredibly calming and quiet, making it the perfect escape to unwind. The wide shore is covered in stunning boulders, creating a unique landscape that's a sight to behold. Visiting during the Trike North Batan tour is a must, but remember to register before you go. The contrast of the boulders against the vibrant blue ocean is breathtaking, and it’s a great spot for photography or simply enjoying nature.

Happy to visit for the second time around the "Page 12-13 of our Philippine Passport"🇵🇭 Valugan Boulder Beach, Batanes. #Batanes #jonahstravel
Jonahs T — Google review
I decided to go here by bike, and it was quite a challenging ride because of the slopes and slides along the way. But it was all worth it. The rain added a mystical effect to the sea, making the view even more beautiful. This free tourist attraction features andesite rock formations created by multiple volcanic eruptions in the past.
Eizen B — Google review
22 Sep 2024. My Northern Tour started around 2pm and this was the fifth destination. Beside the road is a view deck where a picnic can be held, and yet another view of Mt. Iraya to the north. But because the place is not recommended for swimming, I say take a few pictures and move on.
Glenn G — Google review
Valugan Boulder Beach is a natural wonder in Batanes. The massive boulders lining the shore create a unique and mesmerizing landscape. It’s a place where you can marvel at the forces of nature and take in the peaceful ocean views. Exploring the boulders is like stepping into another world. Truly a remarkable sight
Jekii V — Google review
There's an honesty store near the beach that sells different deserts, snacks, and drinks.
Marc J — Google review
This Valugan Boulder Beach is another attraction on the North Batan Tour. A lot has changed here since my last visit. The road leading here has been cemented and a toilet was also contructed near the site. They also made a viewing deck for those who won't go down on the beach and thread over the boulders. But if you do get down there, be careful.
Travel T — Google review
A beach that has huge stones of varying sizes. Barely you will see the sand , it is mostly boulder rocks also strong pulsating waves coming from the Pacific Ocean. Legend has it that those are volcanic rocks from a huge eruption hundred of years ago.

The Dipnaysuhuan Japanese Tunnel is a fascinating historical site that transports visitors back to the tumultuous times of World War II in the Philippines. Constructed by Japanese forces between 1941 and 1945, this intricate network of underground tunnels and bunkers was designed as a military base for storing supplies and ammunition. Local Ivatans were compelled to assist in its construction, driven by fear rather than coercion.
This historical landmark offers a glimpse into Batanes' past, showcasing the remnants of World War II. The tunnel itself is intriguing, with its cool, dark passages that make you feel like you’re stepping back in time. The surrounding area is also beautiful, adding to the overall experience. The local guides are knowledgeable and share great stories about the history of the tunnel, which enhances your visit. It's an important part of the heritage and culture of Batanes, and I highly recommend exploring this unique site for anyone visiting the island
Aira A — Google review
Ivatans were forced to create this Japanese tunnels through the hill so the Japanese military can hide. Today, the tunnel is a tourist spot, but it is also a reminder of our history. Before nakakapasok ka pa, it's just 20mins to complete the tunnel. Pero right now since after the Pandemic, the locals don't encourage the tourists to explore inside the tunnel. #Batanes #jonahstravel
Jonahs T — Google review
22 Sep 2024. My Northern Tour started around 2pm and this was the third destination. It's a very small place, but I really enjoyed this part of the tour for the following reasons: (1) nothing had been changed in its internal structure ever since it was built in the second world war; (2) there is an underground bunker that I have yet to visit because of the steep and slippery stairs; (3) it is a nice piece of our history; (4) I can imagine playing nerf gun war games here; (5) the place is also used as shelter by yellow pit vipers and white pit vipers. I recommend bringing flashlights that are not on your mobile phone. I intend to come back in order to explore that underground bunker
Glenn G — Google review
This Japanese tunnel is one of the sites to be visited on the North Batan Tour. It would be a very educational tour if your guide knows its history. We wanted to go in but the ground was muddy and our guide was worried about the presence of vipers in the area. Hopefully it would be safe when you visit.
Travel T — Google review
Just an old tunnel that were supposedly used by the Japanese, I dunno if its for their prisoners or if its for their escape route. Nevertheless it gives you a glimpse of how nasty a war could've been if you're already born at that time period. The tunnel is pretty short and roughly 5-10minutes is enough. You'll find some crabs in there too.
Allen P — Google review
Not much a fan of small tight spaces but for the love of History, I joined in to experience what Japanese built during WWII, an escape route that exactly leads and with lookout points to airport and seaport. I can imagine what this tunnel had witnessed during the time of war, quite scarry to even think of.
Marzy L — Google review
It was flooded due to the recent typhoon
Jo E — Google review
A bit hesitant to enter since I was claustrophobic but our guide is very responsible for us not to feel uncomfortable. The legendary tunnel has a lot of historic feels. I can't believe I made it through it! Follow your guide and think of safety first always. Wear your safety hat since the cave has a lot of edgy rocks.

Chawa View Deck is a must-visit tourist spot in Batanes, offering stunning panoramic views of the town and surrounding hills. The colorful benches painted by local artists add to the charm, depicting scenes from everyday life. A hundred steps down lead to a tidal pool that merges with the West Philippine Sea. From this vantage point, visitors can marvel at Basco Bay, Mount Iraya, and iconic landmarks like the Basco Lighthouse and Sto.
The view deck reminds me of the chapman peaks drive in South Africa. It was great are for viewing.
Hungry S — Google review
23 Sep 2024. This was the first stop of my Southern Tour, and while the view is indeed very nice, it is unfortunate that bad weather has caused some damage, and so going down to the "shore" or even to the picnic area below is currently prohibited. FYI, two people have died trying to force their way down, and so i highly recommend following the danger signs posted at the area. I'm taking out a star from my review because I wasn't able to go down as well. But on my next visit, I hope to change this to 5 stars.

Under a 7-minute walk from Basco Airport, Philippines, here are a few close by recommendations for when you get hungry exploring around.

Beehan Food Enterprise

4.2

(27)
Restaurant
Beehan Meals & Snacks is a charming little eatery that captures the essence of local cuisine in Basco. Known for its hearty offerings like beef nilaga, pork humba, and the ever-popular sinigang and sisig, this cozy spot is perfect for those on a budget without compromising on flavor. The restaurant's ambiance is inviting and relaxed, making it an ideal choice when you're unsure where to dine.
If you're on a tight budget, worry no more because this restaurant has very affordable and delicious meals for you. They serve authentic Ivatan foods like Luñis (dried adobo), Vunes (gabi stalks; it's kinda like Laing for me), & Uved (ground meat mixed with fish). Their pako salad is a must order! You can really tell that the ingredients used were fresh with its texture. I just hoped that it would be served with salted egg, not boiled egg.
Luwi — Google review
Beehan is that “homegrown local eatery” that has been recommended for a while. Spent our first night here for dinner — I love Batanes in a sense that everything is actually what the Filipino loves to consider “walking distance”! I love their Paco Salad, it’s very luscious and it has this distinct clammy taste and a perfection when squeezed w/ their calamansi. Good grilled chicken thighs — marinated well and the meat is served well done. Our grilled chicken is served with a side of paco salad already (minus the eggs and calamansi). Beef nilaga which they said is good for 1 person only but it’s enough for the 2 of us especially we only want the soup. Beef meat is okay and they only have cabbage as the vegetable for beef nilaga — maybe if they could add a notch for spiciness, it would appeal better. The beef broth is quiet different from the “beef nilaga” they usually have; this one is beef broth. Reasonable pricing and the receptionist is accommodating especially to tourists like us who struggles with communicating. Clean area, kinda humid (but they have wall fans & we visited May 18, 2025) at around 7PM but they have free WiFi access code which is very helpful.

One of Batanes Go to Places for Food. This seems to be the Place that is always mentioned when in Basco. I got the Tuna Platter and it was delicious, already seasoned so no need to add any seasoning. Their Halo Halo is Good for its Price.
Vic M — Google review
23 Sep (late lunch), 24 Sep (dinner), 29 Sep 2024 (lunch). In all of my visits here, only one other table was occupied when I arrived. Ordering is right at the cashier's booth and the system is "pay as you order" so if there are other guests waiting in line, I recommend writing down your order first instead of blocking the way--after all, this is a highly recommended place. For lunch, I had the humba and the paco (fern) salad and I really enjoyed the meal. Along with the soda can this cost me 315 PHP. For dinner, I had the Beehan Platter which had some of Batanes' delicacies (uved and lunis), fern salad and turmeric rice. Along with the soda can, I paid 350 PHP. In both instances, the food was served in about 10 minutes. On my third visit, I had the fern salad once more, along with bopis, rice and a soda. The prices may seem a bit high, but the servings make the meals a good value. I paid in cash and I did not notice if they accept card or e-wallet payments. Anyway, I put this in my top 3 Basco restaurants.
Glenn G — Google review
Beehan is like a local carinderia that sells rice meals and such. We got the Octopus Sisig and we enjoyed it. We also got the Beehan Platter that consists of Batanes delicacies like Uved, Lunes, and Pako salad. There are multiple seats available. We paid using cash.
Marc J — Google review
Beehan is our go to resto in Batanes! That We went went there four times. 😆 the price is affordable compared to other resto but the meals are soooo goood. If you dont want to break the bank but still want to try local food, i highly recommend beehan

I love all the foods and ice cream we ordered here! We had: - pancit - tuna combo - fried roll (surprisingly good both as dessert and snack) - ice cream (reco: chocolate flavor) In terms of ambiance, this al flesco dining but wall fan is available. Quiet dining place near accomodation and there’s a cafe adjacent for coffee fix after a meal The transaction from ordering food, payment, and serving food time were all reasonable. Staff are generally attentive and courteous

Fundacion Pacita

4.6
(352)
Resort hotel
Nestled in Batanes, Fundacion Pacita is a unique hotel offering eclectic rooms with stunning sea and mountain views. The hotel features an art gallery, a restaurant serving modern Western cuisine, and a non-profit lodge with gallery-inspired rooms. Guests can enjoy free breakfast and immerse themselves in the picturesque vistas of the surrounding landscape. The culinary techniques at the hotel showcase the Ivatans' ability to live in harmony with their environment through their food culture.
One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Fundacion Pacita felt like home away from home. The perfect place to decompress and detach from the world's stresses. The art collection found in every corner is a feast for the senses. The rooms are very clean, beds are comfortable (my sleep tracker noted my best sleeps in a long time during my stay). The bathrooms are spacious, clean, heated and with great water pressure. The staff in Fundacion Pacita made our stay even more pleasurable. They were attentive to our needs, went over and beyond in helping us when our flights got canceled, and were so pleasant every time we passed them.
Cara G — Google review
As the most expensive accomodation in Batanes, I expected much better but unfortunately Fundacion Pacita utterly disappointed. During my honeymoon in Dec 2024, apart from the fact that the cafe staff didn't give a friendly first impression, cash was missing from my husbands wallet during our stay. I informed Fundacion through messenger after our stay to ensure we thoroughly looked through our belongings and other possible places the money could be. They responded quickly claiming to take this matter seriously and conduct an investigation. Asking for the details and to bear with them as they conduct the investigation. More than a month passed and I had to chase them for updates instead of them doing so willingly on their own. Eventually, they are not able to conclude any of their staff members are involved after their internal investigation. We did not want to involve local police or report it the moment we noticed because we wanted to make sure we did not mistakenly place it elsewhere. Only after thoroughly checking did I inform Fundacion Pacita. Lesson learnt the hard way. They say Batanes is zero crime rate so we wholeheartedly trusted. But I guess it happens just that crimes are not reported. Batanes was a memorable honeymoon for us but sadly this unfortunate incident left a bad taste.
Jay G — Google review
TL;DR Place for VIPs Only. Everyone Else, GOOD LUCK! (Security concerns, poor communication, no genuine hospitality) We booked Fundacion Pacita expecting a peaceful, once-in-a-lifetime stay surrounded by nature and art. Yes, the views were amazing and breathtaking from our balcony. We stayed in Itaw room and thought it couldn’t be more perfect than that. But we were wrong. Apparently, safety isn't part of the package unless you're a VIP. We lost xx,xxx. The cash and envelope left were clearly tampered with. No vaults in the room because of course, we were in Batanes. Zero to low crime rates, right? Mind you, this happened only a day from our wedding. We were so stressed but what made it worse was the lack of urgency, empathy and accountability. Not enough reassurance was given. The response felt surface-level. Our concern was taken lightly maybe because they had several VIP guests staying at the time. No one from the senior management reached out to us. The owner was actually on-site at the time but never spoke to us. Not even two minutes of their time. That alone already speaks so much. I had to send an email first and they replied more than 2 weeks later. No CCTVs around the area because we were told that all of the staff were trustworthy and that they value the VIPs' privacy. FYI, CCTV footage is not meant to be public. It's there for situations like this. On our wedding day and the next day, not a single person from their staff acknowledged or congratulated us. We weren't expecting anything grand but a simple "Congratulations!" would have gone a long way. When we moved to a homestay in town, we were warmly welcomed and congratulated by people we had just met. With everything that happened including the loss of cash, the lack of communication and the overall feeling of being overlooked, it did not feel worth it. We did not get our money's worth. So if you're booking this place.. maybe think twice? Or go and enjoy the view but manage your expectations. (Check the other review posted 4 months ago, they had the same experience with missing cash!) P.S. Unless you're a VVIP, expect very different treatment. P.P.S. Quick hospitality tip: all guests deserve the same care since we all paid the same rate.

Fundacion Pacita has its own cafe called Cafe du Tukon, the combination of their delicious food and amazing view is so perfect! 🥹 We will definitely go back!
Jane T — Google review
We only went to the restaurant next door, which is open to public. We did not stay at the hotel, which is clearly THE most expensive and exclusive on the island. Probably worth it, if you can afford it... Cafe du Tucan (the restaurant) had a fantastic view of the volcano and the rolling hills. Air conditioned, clean bathrooms! A rarity here... Food menu was extensive and good quality. They even take credit cards here, another rarity!

My second time here in Batanes and still opted to stay here at Fundacion. A lovely and memorable place to be. This time we booked 2 rooms and one is a room in the attic. Both have terraces. The garden is still beautiful and well maintained. Internet is still weak - not only here but the whole island. Im glad that they already added lamps on the pathway to the rooms. The sad part is that the gallery has been closed for some time now. They said it got damaged during the last typhoon that hit Batanes and is yet to be restored. They have a scheduled shuttle to and from the town which can be arranged at their office. You can also arrange a massage with the local "hilot" with them. If you plan to stay here make sure to make reservations months before going. They only have a limited number of rooms.

An IG worthy place with top of the class food. It is pricey but you will get the price you paid for. A classy fine dining place The pan grilled pork is just one of the best I've tasted in this lifetime🙂. It's worth the price. We just walked in the restaurant and we immediately love the view. The hotel is also pricey and was not allowed to enter the hotel area since we are not booked there which is nice for the guest will have the privacy they deserve.

4 nights/ days in Batanes were just about right for us, and staying at the fundacion was a good experience overall. 1) What we liked: Comfy bed and room. Great views. Peace and quiet. Good food at the cafe. Hotel is able to arrange tours if asked. Friendly staff. 2) What we did not like: Room change without prior notice upon arrival after collecting all funds. Restricted breakfast the day on the arrival just to be told that breakfast on departure day was not included. Their version of "continental breakfast" seemed to vary every day! What is included in the PAX seemed to be held back on our 1st day till i of course complained about it. No wifi in the rooms is just annoying as you must leave the quietness of your room for the sometimes noisy cafe! Food was certainly good but a bit too pricey for what it actually is. All in all, if you can afford it, I would certainly recommend!
