Tartu in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Tartu, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tartu, Estonia’s main university city, combines a lively student atmosphere with deep intellectual and cultural roots. Its compact Old Town features landmarks like the Town Hall Square, the leaning House of Tartu, and the University of Tartu’s historic buildings. You can explore excellent museums such as the Estonian National Museum and the AHHAA Science Centre, then relax in riverside parks along the Emajõgi River. Cafés, galleries, and frequent festivals give the city a creative, youthful energy that contrasts with Tallinn’s more formal capital vibe.
With favorites like Kvartal, Sheriff Saloon, and La Dolce Vita, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Pierre and Chez Andre so you can get the best taste of Tartu while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

A large shopping center in Tartu with a free large parking lot, a cinema, some eateries, a smoking room inside the center, and a large Rimi store
Anna-Liis A — Google review
Good shopping mall, not too big, like all the ones in Baltic states. This one has ice ring however it was not in use when we were there. Choice of food places from hamburgers to... .
Ilze G — Google review
Hands down the best shopping center in the south of Estonia. You have pretty much everything you need here. Including ample parking, electric car charging, fast food, cinema etc.
Edgar S — Google review
There's lots to see and do at this big mall with an ice skating ring, an adventure rope course, lots of shops, a cinema, restaurant and a foodcourt.
Pyrognats — Google review
Nice big shopping center where you get everything you need.
Iti-Jantra M — Google review
Quite nice. Plenty of varied shops and indoor ice rink where you can go skating or maybe see figure skaters or locals playing hockey while you have lunch. Grocery stores, movie theater, gym, just about everything and more shops all around the actual mall.
Wiley C — Google review
Like to be there for two reasons: when I get bored and when need to have a lot of options for shopping. A number of restaurants as well. Aparanga is one of good clothes stores at least for men.
CHINMAYA D — Google review
A very good shopping centre that we have visited for years. Refreshingly new stores and lots of activities for all ages! Also great restaurants and quick "bite" stops!

Nestled in the heart of Tartu, Estonia, Cafe-restaurant Werner is a charming establishment steeped in history. For over 115 years, it has served as a gathering place for renowned writers, poets, and artists who have come together to share their creativity over delightful meals and aromatic coffee. The inviting atmosphere is perfect for sparking inspiration while indulging in an array of delectable pastries and cakes that grace the menu.
Super nice coffee shop, I've been here several times while visiting Tartu - I really like it! The coffee is good, and they have a selection of cakes and savoury pastries. I enjoyed the salmon with eggs on bread, as well as the caramel latte. I didn't like the red peppercorns, and wish they would remove those.
E D — Google review
I thought this was a good spot for something light to start my morning. The pistachio latte was amazing, and I wished I’d taken more time to order off the menu.
Brian S — Google review
The cafe is spacious,it has 2 floors. Quite popular and full on weekend. They offer huge variety of parties and cakes.Good to share with friends.
Nomad W — Google review
Love the place and staffs. I love how vigorous and lovely the atmosphere here is. I used to visit a lot just for taking a rest. Also lots of memories with lovely people. I love the cakes and matcha latte from here✨
Dea L — Google review
We were a large group so we got a menue of pumpkin soup, salmon, and dessert. Honestly the salmon was one of the best I’ve had in estonia, while the pumpkin soup and cakes were a little disappointing.
Thyma E — Google review
Absolutely terrible service. So many people waiting on the line and all those girls who working there just being deliberately slow and lazy. There are like 4 girls behind the counter and most of the bakery is already ready but they still fail to be quicker. The food is okay and it’s a historic cafe at the heart of Tartu Old Town but sadly unmotivated service girls ruining this place. Near is a French cafe called Pierre what is much more recommended. Quick and friendly service with delicious food.
Maris K — Google review
We visited earlier in the day and we were so happy with this place, the food was lovely, the staff nice, an overall good time. The same cannot he said however for dinner time. We waited for our food for almost an hour, nothing was the same as it was during the day, the soup was like water and when the childrens meals arrived, simple chicken and chips, it was cold. Nobody seemed to have any idea what was going on. There was no manager present either as it was the "weekend". We were eventually given a phone number for us to call for the manager who was very unhelpful and didnt seem to be interested in our concerns. The coffee was good and the cakes nice however with the complete lack of competence or structure with in the business i wouldnt recommend this place.

Tartu Town Hall Square, situated in the heart of Tartu, Estonia, is a captivating destination for visitors. The square is surrounded by well-preserved buildings that showcase the city's history and charm. The iconic Tartu Town Hall with its Gothic-style facade stands as a prominent feature. Lined with cafes and restaurants, the square offers a charming atmosphere for exploration.
A nice square with beautiful Christmas decorations. Interesting stalls with artistic ideas and also a stall with mulled wine. There is also the possibility of ice skating on the square⛸️

Tartu’s town square is the heart of the city, lined with pastel-colored, renovated buildings that reflect its rich history. Cobblestone streets add charm, while statues and playful fountains bring the area to life. The “Kissing Students” fountain stands out as a popular photo spot and symbol of the town’s youthful spirit. It’s a perfect place to stroll, sit on a bench, or relax at a café terrace. We really loved this place! 😍😍😍
Kaisar T — Google review
It’s a beautiful plat, cool eating place outside, one can walk around, generally not crowded too much. Also ha tourist information centre located here. Kissing fountain is the place to take some pictures. Walking distance from the bus station.
Dr. R — Google review
Tricky to review a square unless it's unusual or spectacular. The Town Hall Square is wide and long, with a gentle slope and a pretty fountain in front of the Town Hall. It's cobbled and quite unspoilt. There is a small coffee shop with outdoor tables at the top right, near the fountain, but smokers should note that they don't allow smoking at the tables. There's also a good-sized pub about half-way up the square with reasonably-priced drinks, but it's an Irish Bar and, as an Irishman I try to avoid these when I'm travelling, so I can't review it. Rüütli Tn leads off the square, pretty much between the café and the pub, and has a large selection of restaurants in most price brackets
Niall C — Google review
Must-visit spot in Tartu! There are many restaurants, cafes, and cool architecture. I visited during #Tartu2024, which was beautiful, and many events happened.
Opallpyp — Google review
Such a lovely cobbled square with lots of cafes.

Town Hall is an amazing place, and the vibe is extraordinary. Lots of nice cafés and restaurants around. One can visit in the evenings to enjoy the surroundings. Some upgradation work is going on as the city has been declared as the cultural capital of Europe, and there are 300+ events lined up in 2024. Town Hall Square is the centre of all tge events and activities.

Regular shopping center. I did like one of their coffee shops that had lots of excellent pastries like lavender black currant cake, green velvet cake, a super delicious carrot cake and so on. The coffee selection is good as well. Also their upstairs restaurant is great to have lunch at.

The Gunpowder Cellar of Tartu is a popular spot among students, offering delicious food including Estonian dishes like mulgipuder. The spacious and comfortable hall has a great table layout, though it may be a bit tricky to find at first. The parking spots for cars are well-thought-out, resembling medieval times. Visitors praise the friendly and prompt service, as well as the amazing atmosphere with live music and flowing beer.
The food was lovely and the staff were very friendly. It's a very interesting place to go eat. It's a great place to go to get more traditional estonian food.
Millie A — Google review
I spent my last day in Estonia and decided to go to the Gunpowder Cellar. The atmosphere was really lovely. The food was so good as well! If I come to Tartu again, I will definitely eat there again.
Stefanie ( — Google review
I will definitely be back for this place. Walking in was like entering a fantasy setting, and for being such a large open space there is more seating than you think. Great beer selection, and the heavy wood furniture gives an impression of warmth for being underground. There’s also a stage on the ground floor.
Brian S — Google review
A really cozy restaurant. Interesting interior and really delicious food. The waiter could have come and asked more often if we wanted more drinks or something. However, the service was otherwise good in every way. We were able to eat inside with the dogs and got a table on the side. Overall, a good experience and I will definitely visit again.
Anu K — Google review
Visited in Sep 2025 Dropped by the Gunpowder Cellar a couple of times during my visit to Tartu. Ended up trying a few beers, but didn’t have any food. These folks have a pretty good collection of beers, incl. their house draughts and local/Estonian brands. I didn’t have any reservation and just did a walk-in. Had no issue finding a seat as the place is quite big. However, if you’re coming in a big group, it may be better to make a reservation. All in all, I think this beer hall/brewery is a must visit if you’re in Tartu, not only for the beers, but for the history of this place and the wonderful ambience.
Avijeet S — Google review
Incredible! Best food I've had in a very long time. Chicken schnitzel and sweet potatoes were as flavorful as they were tender - fell apart as I placed my fork on it. The fried rye bread was also delicious. Both the domino cake (like an Oreo cheesecake) and the chocolate fondant (super dark and chocolatey) were delicious. Service was equally outstanding and the atmosphere in this old gunpowder storage cellar was perfect for my first night in Tartu. What a fortunate find!
Lewis L — Google review
It is a bunker like restaurant medieval style. Food was not so amazing. Tables are to big for groups of 8, if you come with 2 quite difficult to find a place. Thought the ambience is interesting.

I loved everything about Pierre’s french restaurant, in the main square of Tartu. The waitresses are just fabulous and their French attire makes you feel as if you are in Paris, France. They also offer excellent service and are very friendly and welcoming. I chose to eat the caramelised pork chop and it was the most delicious pork chop I’ve ever eaten. I wish to highly recommend Pierre’s French restaurant! 10 out of 10!

Delicious coffee, a wide selection of desserts. A cozy and atmospheric place. However, in early spring, the dining area was quite stuffy—not sure how it is here in summer. Hopefully, they turn on the AC when it gets warmer.
Dmitri K — Google review
We visited here for lunch and we're very impressed. Very nice atmosphere and an intriguing decor. I had the salmon with Viking herbs and my wife had pasta with chicken and pineapple. Both were excellent and substantial. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Thank you for a lovely time
Peter M — Google review
Good tomato soup, but I would like more parmesan, excellent salad, and Aperol. The interior is beautiful, but the restroom was not well-maintained. Overall, I enjoyed everything, although umbrellas with simple designs rather than beer advertisements would be more fitting for a cafe-restaurant in a French style."
Irina V — Google review
Terrible sandwich. There is no mention of sauces on the menu, but the sandwich was full of various sauces. This is very unprofessional; people have allergies. Awful experience. Edit in response to my first review: My review has nothing to do with the nice waiter; he is not responsible for the fact that the menu does not list allergens or even the main ingredients of the dishes, such as sauces. Management is responsible for this, and it is terrible that they shift the responsibility onto the employees in this way. I should add that I didn't eat anything else, so I don't know how you can assume that I liked the rest. Unless we're talking about the coffee.
Wan — Google review
The place is cozy and located in the very heart of the city. Service is good but nothing extra. Estonian pork chop was too dry while the cranberry-apple confit was nice. Be prepared for load of calories though :) Baked pasta was good but a bit too "messy", if I may say so.
Jaanika M — Google review
Love the restaurant garlic crunchy bread. It tastes so good. It was the second time visit and still very tasty! Visited the restaurant last year Nov! Very friendly staffs, interior decoration is very cool. During summer time we were sitting outside and totally enjoyable and relax!

Nestled in the picturesque Old Town of Tartu, Restoran Chez Andre is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. The passionate chef pours his heart into the menu, showcasing exquisite French cuisine that delights the senses with every bite. The attentive and friendly service enhances your visit, ensuring you feel welcomed throughout your meal.
The food was prepared on the coal grill outside, just in front of us and it was seasonal, local food. We had european perch, which was grilled perfectly, alongside with a chanterelle sauce and grilled vegetables, as well as the pork tenderloin alongside some grilled vegetables. The tastes where perfectly balanced and we really enjoyed it. The deserts are also worth mentioning, if you don't find something you like in the menu, take a walk inside and there is a whole bunch of different cakes available. Overall, this place is a hidden gem for people who enjoy good food and care about the quality and sustainability of their food.

We had a fabulous experience at the restaurant. The grilled fish was perfect, served with tasty vegetables, all wonderfully seasoned and perfectly cooked. The two pastas we ordered were a novel and tasty combination. We will definitely back.

Food was far away from tasty. Staff was extremely arrogant. Wouldn’t recommend this place to my dearest enemy. Second night out we visited other restaurants and experience was amazing. In conclusion I would say this is the last place you want to visit in Tartu!

Fabulous tastes and serving! Friendly prices and according to me even too low for such quality! It has been the best restaurant experience of the year. Cosy and friendly atmosphere. The chef who greets and meets the guests personally. The real gem among the restaurants in Tartu. Highly recommendable!
Dea S — Google review
We entered the Restaurant late in the evening, some minutes before the kitchen usually closes. Nevertheless we were offered a table and received an amazing dinner and beautiful wine. Service was very friendly and attentive. Absolute recommendation!

The food was incredible and unique, definitely worth a visit while in Tartu. Andre was also very friendly and took the time to explain the ingredients and inspiration behind each dish, which made the experience feel even more personal and memorable. You can really tell there’s passion behind everything served here. The oxtail creme brûlée is an absolute must try but you likely can’t go wrong with any of the dishes. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Good pub in Tartu, South Estonia. Excellent service! Food is good but not excellent. Try lava cake and special Christmas time menu! Pork knuckle is not big, overpriced. Beer 5,50 eur , wine 15cl 5,50 eur, aqua 33cl 3,20 eur.
Angela U — Google review
Waited almost an hour for the food. Pork patties were incredibly salty and served on a cracked plate. Chicken schnitzel was good, however the “side” salad they serve with it is outrageous for that price.
Alina V — Google review
Very solid Wiener schnitzel. Very much like one would get in Vienna. Service is good, perhaps a little overwhelmed. Good beer selection and desserts. Could not finish the Schnitzel!
Andres A — Google review
Food was good. I got the schnitzel, chili cheese paste and chicken wings, all very good and authentic. Our waiter, a young man, had a typical Estonian customer service. He was quite rude to us and did not seem to care much about the customers. I would expect this from some kind of McDonald’s in a Tallinn District but not at a restaurant which claims to be authentic Bavarian/Austrian. Long story short, the restaurant has Bavarian prices, but not Bavarian customer service. More positively, the restaurant has an excellent beer selection with a lot of beers. I would recommend to make a taster menu so one could order smaller quantities of different beers to try them all. Also, maybe I missed it, but there could have been a burger on the menu as is typical for restaurants in Bavaria and Tyrol. Also, the appetizers took about 30 minutes to arrive. We were there on a Saturday at 15:30.
Juhani S — Google review
Great restaurant. We have been there with a group of 36 people. Placed our order beforehand. Usually this procedure occurs some confusing, but not there. Even with “only” two servers everything was well and quick organised. Many thanks to the entire team. Great service, delicious food and an outstanding performance overall.

Rude staff. Unfriendly place. I was traveling alone and planned to have dinner here. Upon my arrival, I politely asked any table available for one, Both 2 male staff at the bar ignored me, so I asked again, another 10 seconds of no response. Then a staff turned his head a bit to a very narrow stool place with words"that's all we have". There was plenty of empty table available at the point. I don't understand why.

Sheriff Saloon in Tartu offers a wide variety of tasty burgers, with daily deals to help you save money while enjoying Estonian cuisine. The restaurant's American-influenced menu and cowboy-style decor create a unique dining experience. With a terrace for summer relaxation and multilingual staff, it caters to diverse tastes and preferences. The generous portions, including juicy burgers and large wings, make it an ideal spot for hearty appetites.
If you are looking for a tasty and filling meal or burgers, then this is the place for you. The prices for main courses are in the 8-20 euro range. The menu has a lot of variety. The atmosphere of the place, although a little cramped, feels quite genuine and made me feel like I was at an American place. Fast and friendly service, had to wait about 30 minutes for my food. Oh, you can also play a board game on your table to pass the time. Highly recommend!

You won't leave the place hungry, that's for sure! Great selection of various dishes ranging from quesadillas, tacos, wings, burgers and other main courses. Mainly focused on meat, so not sure if I would recommend it to a vegetarian. :) Dishes were nothing suprising, but still tasty and like homemade. I really enjoyed thay they have board games printed on the tables, so you can wait for the food while playing.

If you want to eat BIG, then this is the place! Burgers were really juicy and big, my recommendation are wings! They were sooooo big and tasty I never expected. Actually all food and snacks were really tasty and worth it. Coctails were tasty as well. Adios coctail is for the tough guys aka Long Island alternative. Stuff despite that there was only one waitress - respect - perfect! Also there is a small place for kids and all tables are with integrated table game to shorten your waiting time. Strongly recommend!

A nice place to eat in the centre of Tartu. They cater for a wide range of tastes and budgets. The food is mostly American influenced, with cowboy style decor. They offer a terrace out the back which can be a nice place to sit and drink in the summer, a little bit away from the busier restaurants for those who prefer a more laid back environment. Staff are lovely and speak both English and Estonian well. Alcohol is served here, with a pretty good selection of beers, spirits and cocktails.

Good service, nice server. The Special Burger of the month was pretty good. Pretty original blend of tastes. Price is not cheap for Estonia, but not outrageous either.

Cool to see, as a southern person... Not authentic, but tasty. I can't say I was a fan of the cucumbers in the tacos or the guac... Or the salsa... But nice attempt. Flautas were more like chimichangas, they were good... Drink specials, well they can't make a margarita, but at least they tried. Nice staff.

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with AHHAA Science Centre, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Tagurpidi Maja (Peapeal OÜ). All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

AHHAA Science Centre, established in 1997, is the largest science center in the Baltics. It offers an array of interactive exhibits, a planetarium, workshops, and a science theatre with special effects. The center provides an engaging and educational experience for the whole family. Children can enjoy hands-on experiments and various shows while exploring historical medicine collections dating back to 1803.
This is a must visit for a family day out. The exhibits are interactive, hands-on and engaging for visitors of all ages. The cafe is a great spot for lunch with daily specials and a kids menu. There is free parking in the basement. The gift shop has a wide selection. Highly recommended if you in or near Tartu.

We visited with our family and were absolutely impressed. We’ve been to several museums of this type, but this one deserves a full 5 out of 5. The exhibits engaged everyone – both adults and teenagers. There’s a lot to see and do, so we never got bored. We spent 3.5 hours here, and the time flew by. We could have stayed even longer, but unfortunately had to leave. The museum is enjoyable for children of all ages – even the little ones will find plenty to do. Everything is very interesting and well thought out. The only area for improvement would be providing more visual instructions, such as icons or pictures showing what to do or where to press. There’s also a café on site – we didn’t try it, but it’s great to have the option for a break. I would happily visit again.

This is a fantastic place to visit with your children. Everyone will find something interesting and amazing here. We go there every year and will do again! It’s so great to see how,as children grow up, their understanding of things changes each time. At the planetarium,we always choose one of the films that corresponds to the children’s interests at that moment. Amazing!

The park features separate areas for kids with smaller slides and safe waters, ensuring a fun and safe environment for families. While the main pool area is relatively small, there are plenty of activities for visitors of all ages, including saunas, big swimming pools, and kiddie pools.
Great water park. It was Monday morning so it was fairly quiet. It did get busy later on. Different saunas available. Few flumes. Overall good place to visit and not too expensive.

Good place that I was visiting every week, but suddenly decided to close at 8 PM today (because seems like they had a private event afterward?). Was not informed at reception desk and did not see any sign about it anywhere. Do they expect regular visitors to check the closing time on google maps at every visit?

Very nice place for our family of five. Kids 13, 11 and 9 enjoyed activities, there were three bigger slides and for example current road for swimming.
Henri — Google review
Great waterpark! It has saunas variety of jakuzis and water slides!
Decard — Google review
The place is made up of three parts, a 50m swimming pool (almost always divided into 25m lanes only), a water slide park and a sauna-spa centre. The swimming pool is glorious, with tons of natural light, friendly lifeguards, well organised and clean. The water park is mediocre, hasn’t changed much in two decades but does the trick for little kids. The spa centre unfortunately is barely worth the expense. Yes they have renovated and expanded the space and sure there are a variety of saunas available (Finnish ones of different temperatures, steam, aroma…) but generally the place feels like an after thought and cramped into available space. It also feels like it was styled and built in the 1990s. The minuscule shower room and cramped changing room especially are awkward and might impress military planners who need to save space and not care about user comfort. There are also no extra or amenities like disinfectant for feet, sandals or dressing gowns for rent, salt for scrubbing etc etc etc In town only VSpa was built from scratch as a spa center, not as an add-on, so if that’s what you’re after, head there. Otherwise for a swim workout, this is your place!

Tagurpidi Maja, also known as the upside down house, is a quirky tourist attraction located near the National Museum in Tartu. Inside, visitors will find tilted floors and unconventional furnishings that create the illusion of being in an upside down house. Walking through the space can be disorienting and may cause dizziness due to the unusual angles. Despite its small size, it offers a unique and fun experience for taking amusing photos.
Fun place to visit. However I have to say there isn’t much to do except taking pictures of the upside down house and the decorations (and to be honest without a person standing in front of the pictures it probably looks like you rotated the pics). It’s good to spend a couple of hours there though.

Very fun idea! However, needs better maintenance (some items have started to droop the wrong way). The idea could also be taken forward with some more items. The site is not suitable for wheel chairs (see image, the ramp is too short with two steps).
Jarkko L — Google review
Great place for kids but for adults I'm not so sure it's that exciting. We were very lucky to come around when there were no people so we had the whole house to ourselves haha.
Anastasiia T — Google review
Fun place for a short visit. It was just steps on the way to the National museum. When inside, the floors are tilted at weird angles and the fixtures and furnishings are all invented. This gives the illusion that you are in an upside down house. The strangely slanting flooring makes walking clumsy and causes vertigo. Some dizziness hit me after spending some time in here. Unique experience but few can stay inside. Walking around the house is interesting too. There are some benches outside and from here it is enjoyable to appreciate this large art installation.
Pyrognats — Google review
Absolutely amazing place to go to. The staff at the gate was really nice and helpful. There's also TV screen inside with tips how to best pose. We managed to get there when it wasn't too busy and everyone was nice and took turns. Just wear sensible shoes as the small incline messes with your head a lot.

Vapiano Tartu is a relaxed eatery that specializes in customized, freshly prepared pasta dishes and also offers pizza and salad options. While some patrons have praised the delectable pasta carbonara with generous spices and garlic during their initial visits, others have mentioned recent experiences of lacking seasoning and excessive oiliness. Nonetheless, this establishment provides an overall enjoyable dining experience in an appealing setting. Their filling pasta dishes guarantee satisfaction, and their organic pomegranate juice is a standout beverage choice.
The food is as good as 2 stars. Needs loads of improvement at least you want to stop the hunger 😂 The service was awesome. The atmosphere was great. Fast food restaurant
McDonald's Turu is a renowned and enduring fast-food establishment recognized for its delectable burgers and fries. Patrons rave about the heavenly taste of their fries, which are considered unparalleled. Upon receiving their food, customers are enthralled by the sight of an angelic meal. The love for Estonia and Lithuania is evident, with a particular emphasis on McDonald's in Estonia. The desire to return without any regrets is expressed from Latvia.
The nearby mall charged EU 0.3 for the toilet but it is free here. Was fine with the toilet fee per use. I was always pleased with McD' s universal business policy of free toilets to everyone. Other than this perk, thus store is well maintained with nice dining environment.

The coffee is really bad, and the worst part is they don’t even offer a free glass of tap water. Hard to believe a place as big as McDonald’s can’t provide something as basic as that. Very disappointing.

On a regular august wednesday, it took them more than 15 min to get ready a standard cheeseburger meal plus a milkshake. (I do not know how long actually; at 15min point I had to leave) I had to go to the counter and beg them to at least give me a cheeseburger at 21:55 when I only had 5 min to catch the LAST BUS to Tallinn. I got the burger and THEN I HAD TO RUN to the bus station to catch the bus at the very last minute. (Had I missed it, the mc do meal would have costed me a night at a hotel + a new bus ticket 😂 = min 100€) (note: bus station is at the next block, so I thought 15 min for such a basic order should have been just fine!) So. My advise. Rather starve to death than expect to get any food from mc do in any decent timeframe. 0 starts. 2 stars for the lady who at least gave me a burger. Rest of my money went to waste.

Very good food, cocktails are made with precision and attitude for quality. Place has nice ambient atmosphere regarding interior, but must improve playlist a lot. Britney Spears and then AC/DC after two song isn't best music for such place.

Great service and one of the best t-bone steaks I've ever had. The pulled pork croquettes made for an excellent starter as well before digging into the main course. The advice from our server was spot on and we left with our bellies full and a smile on our faces.

This was the most superb service we got from our trip to Estonia as a whole. The staff was super friendly, took time to explain to us all aboit the food were going to eat, gave recommendations as to what wine is the best to take with our food. Ambience was also cozy. The chianti wine from 2018 was impeccable. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you're visiting Tartu.

Food - lamb was overcooked and very chewy. Its pesto was inedible (disgusting). Burger's meat was perfectly cooked, but the burger was completely cold (probably some of the ingredients were taken straight out of the fridge, which cooled down the meat). Bao was soaking wet. Service was surprisingly slow and not very professional. It took over 1.5-2h to get a starter and main and around 20-30 min to get water and other drinks. Cocktails were excellent, but that's it. Meat Market it is very overpriced as unfortunately they did not deliver with their food quality... perhaps we chose the wrong day to visit.

Have you ever thought where boulevard of broken dreams is located? This is the place! The Estonian National Museum (ENM), also known as ERM, is a modern museum located in Tartu. It was founded in 1909 and reopened in a new building in 2016. The museum showcases Estonian culture and folk art through its permanent exhibitions, 'Encounters' and 'Echo of the Urals,' which cover Estonia's cultural history and the Finno-Ugric peoples.
North of Tartun, the runway of the former Raadi Airfield appears to rise from the ground, revealing a gigantic, ultramodern building. What visitors see here is the main building of the Estonian National Museum (Eesti Rahva Muuseum), which opened in 2016. Founded in 1909 to house Jakob Hurt's ethnographic and folklore collection, the museum showcases the history, life, and traditions of the Estonian people and other Finno-Ugric peoples in Estonia. The museum opened in 1922 in Raadi Manor, the manor house where the Von Liphart family's collections were already housed. Between 1940 and 1991, most of the museum's cultural artifacts were hidden from the occupying forces. After regaining independence, the Estonian government launched a design competition for a new museum building in 2005. The French architectural trio Dan Dorell, Lina Ghotmeh, and Tsuyoshi Tane won the competition, and their design has been open to visitors since 2016. The museum is a highly interesting destination for anyone interested in learning more about Estonian (and Finno-Ugric) culture, folklore, and history. Thanks to the interactive information panels, this is also easily accessible for non-Estonians. Highly recommended!

The Estonian National Museum is a wonderful example of the harmony between tradition, history, and modern architecture. The exhibits are presented in very interesting ways, with engaging formats and solutions that capture your attention. The museum’s spaces are beautiful, creating a pleasant and inspiring experience. There is a café where you can grab a bite – the food was fresh and tasty. We visited with our family and spent about 2.5 hours here – everyone really enjoyed it. Recommended for anyone looking to combine culture with a delightful time together.

Keep in mind, that you will need 2-3 hours here to fully explore the place, so visiting 1 hours before closing is not reccommended!!

An incredible and comprehensive history of Estonia. You could easily spend a couple days here exploring everything in depth. Half price sunday admitting was a nice suprise!

The Estonia National Museum is a stunning destination that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology to create an immersive and interactive experience. Its extensive collection spans historical artifacts, cultural treasures, and modern innovations, providing a comprehensive journey through Estonia’s rich heritage. One of the museum’s most impressive features is its use of advanced digital technology. Visitors can engage with interactive touch screens, audiovisual displays, and digital guides to explore the context of each exhibit in detail. The museum also offers augmented reality (AR) features, bringing historical objects to life in fascinating ways. Beyond its technological appeal, the museum is thoughtfully designed with a modern and open layout, making it both comfortable and visitor-friendly. It beautifully balances the essence of traditional culture with a futuristic perspective, offering a harmonious blend of the past and the present. With its exceptional collection and innovative approach, the Estonia National Museum is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, technology lovers, or anyone seeking a remarkable museum experience. Highly recommended! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Visiting the Estonian National Museum in Tartu was an unforgettable experience. The architecture alone takes my breath away – bold, modern, and yet deeply rooted in the nation’s history. Inside, the exhibitions tell the story of Estonia with such creativity, depth, and soul that you feel both educated and moved at the same time. This visit has made my love for this remarkable country and its warm, resilient people even stronger. A place where past and present meet so beautifully – I cannot recommend it enough.
Michaela S — Google review
We got tickets that are an interactive part of your visit, you can change the info posts to your own language with them, but sadly the big screens rarely worked and many of the games are only in estonian. All in all worth a visit, reserve at least 3h-4h if you want to go through everything.
Elina — Google review
In my opinion it's a must visit. Absolutely massive museum so be prepared to spend many hours there. They have a nice option to switch all posts to English or other languages with a tap with your ticket on the screen. What I noticed though was that the screens kind of have a timeout set up when they are switched to another language (they switch back to Estonian after some time) and it interrupts the videos and it's impossible to finish them with the subtitles you want. We were also a bit unfortunate to come at the same time with a group of very impolite and loud school students but we changed the order we viewed the exhibition to not be in the same place with them to avoid disturbances. Overall, the museum is just so unusual for Estonia - it's absolutely gigantic and has so much air. You can think of MOMA in New York and it's on par. Except this one it about ethnographic history of Estonia, which is more interesting in my opinion.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu is a delightful retreat for plant enthusiasts located in the heart of Tartu. The garden offers guided tours to visitors, showcasing a research base alongside riverside park housing greenhouses, sculptures and exotic plants from all over the world. Plant labels and informative plates are placed throughout the park providing an educational experience. The tranquil setting offers beautiful natural and man-made views with sculptures from various Estonian artists scattered throughout.
We visited on a summer weekday, and there were no queues or crowds - just a peaceful walk. The outdoor area is free to explore, and the indoor botanical garden costs 6€, which was totally worth it. However, it’s hurtful to see the turtles “living” indoors confined to such a small space. This really needs to be fixed.
Anna-Liis A — Google review
Beautiful and huge place that is not marketed enough! If you really want to see everything I would recommend reserving at least 3h for the whole place inside and out ( the outside area is huge). We came here by chance. Come here even if you are not that big plant/flower person.
Elina — Google review
A large botanical garden with numerous paths and helpful descriptions. You only need a ticket to enter the glass house. The garden is open in the evening, making it a lovely place for a stroll at the end of a busy day

This is one of the true gems of Tartu. The grounds of the university botanical garden are truly magical. They offer a wonderful place to while away time and explore their natural beauty
E K — Google review
Despite its small size (3 hectares), this smaller botanical garden boasts a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees. It's a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Great botanical garden. Felt like you are in tropical jungle. For only 3 euros if you are student. Worth to visit.

Botanical garden is free to enter but there is paid (couple euro) indoor area with tropical plants. Everything is well maintained and labelled. Good for relaxation and education.

La Dolce Vita in Tartu is a popular Italian restaurant known for its delicious pasta, homemade pizza, and mouthwatering desserts. The friendly Italian owners ensure a comfortable dining experience for guests. This cozy eatery is highly rated and frequented by both locals and tourists who appreciate the wood-oven pizzas, authentic pasta dishes, and a selection of fine Italian wines. It's recommended to make reservations in advance to secure a table at this family-friendly establishment.
When coming to Tartu, me and my family were not expecting the resturants to be so lively and full. At 21:00 there was almost no space in any resturants, but we decided to come here and ask for a table, despite it being so full. The service was great, they offered us a table in 20 minutes and it was the best offer since everywhere else was busy. The food here was AMAZING. If you would like to enjoy authentic italian cuisine, then i advise you to come here. Both pizza and pasta were phenomenal here and i would definitely return!! Also, there is a good selection of drinks and even desserts. The atmosphere was great and very italian. I definitely recommend to make a reservation before coming, because other people love this place too ;)

4.5 stars Good food and atmosphere, place to return when in Tartu , was first time in terrace in summer opens , more tables as usual needed to book table .

A perfect spot for a family meal after a busy day of sightseeing – cibo squisito that tickles every sense! Highlights were a truly Italian lasagne and a calzone so good we murmured buonissimo at first bite. Desserts? The panna cotta was autentica, silky with just the right wobble – una vera delizia. Service inside the restaurant was equally impressive: the young ragazze front-of-house were professional yet warm, making us feel genuinely welcome. Grazie mille – we’ll definitely be back!

This is probably one of the best Italian food places in Estonia, not just in Tartu. The service was quite nice, on a shy side but that's what we like. It's inexpensive, served quickly. The flavours were amazing and they have quite a big menu to choose from. Very cozy and homely atmosphere. Definitely recommend.
Anastasiia T — Google review
The best pizza we ever tasted outside Italy ! Fresh ingredient, perfect dough and a wide choice makes this restaurant a must for pizza lovers in Tartu. We cannot rate the other dishes but the appearance of pasta and main courses were really excellent. Great place, great service and nice atmosphere
Tony B — Google review
- Hospitality was good / waitress was good The rest…. - Seafood soup tasted like it was made of MAGGI cube tablets - not tasty - spicy pasta - too much souce / taste like thousand islands bottled souce. Chicken in pasta - small cubes / preliminary cut AND…. Surprise!!! Prices in menu are without VAT!!!! Really?! So at the end you are paying instead of 69 EUR - 85!!!! Dolce Vita - NEVER again!

La Dolce Vita, as its name suggests, is a sweet Italian restaurant right in the heart of Tartu, Estonia. We visited on the evening of September 4th, 2025, after a quick stroll through the Old Town following our drive from Gauja in Latvia. I was pleasantly surprised to see how packed it was on a regular weekday evening and that alone gave us a great first impression. The smell of fresh pizzas from the oven, the waitresses rushing between tables, and the lively atmosphere made the place feel warm and authentic, especially as we were starving. I had a local beer alongside a pizza, and we also tried the lasagna, which was excellent and came in a surprisingly generous portion (something not so common in Estonia, where portions are usually smaller). All in all, we left very satisfied and I can genuinely recommend this spot to anyone in Tartu craving Italian food. For real!
Kalyoner — Google review
Good food and a cozy atmosphere. Great to see also many families enjoying their Sunday lunch. Why do the young waitresses have to wear short hot pants as their work attire? Gives a sleazy cheap vibe. As uncomfortable to the young ladies as to the customers.

St. John Church in Tartu is a gothic brick Lutheran church located in the Old Town. While the interior may not be particularly spectacular, it offers one of the best panoramic views of the city from its tower, making it a must-visit attraction. Climbing to the top is relatively manageable with a small fee for entry. The church is adorned with terracotta sculptures, some of which are well-preserved and can be admired inside.
Fantastic example of 16th century architecture if I remember correctly. Very peaceful inside, they have an organ. Nice little gift shop too.
Iryna D — Google review
St. John’s Church in Tartu is beautifully renovated, it stands out with its red brick exterior. Inside, you’ll find a peaceful atmosphere and restored medieval details. You can climb the narrow stairs to the tower for views over the old town. It's a must-visit for history and architecture lovers. We loved it 😍 And what a fun lady at the shop! 💃🏼 Ticket only 3€ in July 2025
Kaisar T — Google review
Recently renovated, 2005, this is a nice church. The main characteristic is the so called 1000 figurines inside the church. Inside you can’t really see them actually because of their position. You can take pictures and access the tower against entrance fees

This is an interesting church in the historical old town of Tartu, which plenty of features that make it unique not only in Estonia, but in the Baltic region and northern Europe. It has been verywell renovated
E K — Google review
You can visit the church, but it's not worth it paying the fee and going up 138 stairs steps as the obsertory is not well maintained and the view from up there (through glass) is super ordinary and not interesting as you see in the following photo I took:

Crepp offers a wide variety of both traditional salty crepes and special sweet crepes, which are served with ice cream and whipped cream. The portions are generous, making it a filling option for lunch or dinner. Customers rave about the delicious galettes and crepes, with options like hazelnut and honey pancake, blueberry crepe, shrimp salad, and pancakes with blue cheese, chicken, and sundried tomatoes.
Cozy place with delicious pancakes. We had salmon & cream cheese and Nutella & cream cheese, both were really good.
Nadezda Z — Google review
I tried both delivery and dining in at this place. For delivery, I ordered a tuna salad, which was very tasty, filling and rather like a bowl with different ingredients, I really enjoyed it. For dessert, I got a crepe with cherries, chocolate spread and ice cream. It was good that the ice cream was packed separately in a small cup. The crêpe was delicious, but more like a full dish on its own. When I visited the restaurant, I ordered a galette with oven-baked salmon, cream cheese and leek. It was quite filling, but I didn’t really like the taste, it was too bland and there was too much leek, which didn’t go well with other ingredients. As well I had ginger and cinnamon tea, which was very good. Overall, the food can be good depending on what you order. The interior didn’t leave much of an impression, very simple, so I’d probably go for delivery next time.
Vladyslava S — Google review
I had a crepe with Nutella, banana, and strawberries and it was really yummy. Our waitress was friendly and the sitting are was cozy and the atmosphere was cozy as well. I highly recommend Crepp if you are ever hungry for a crepe in Tartu, Estonia.

Fast food restaurant
The Hesburger establishment provides an average dining experience, with the only downside being the slow drive-through service. However, they excel in providing prompt and efficient customer service while maintaining high standards of food quality.
The food is hesbutger like, but atleast wasn't the worst, was a little pricey. For parking when inside ask for free parking.
Žygimantas L — Google review
Hesburger like you would expect, so product level is the same almost everywhere in other Hesburgers - which is good. This particular cafe has usually very slow service (considering more than 5 visits) so be prepared to wait 30mins or more. Not so fast for a fast food restaurant.
Marek S — Google review
So far, i have liked everything i have ordered. I recommend using the cupons there are in Hesburger app. Veke soja burger is very good.
Eliise R — Google review
Expect to pay way too much for what you get. Stop for food only as your last option, french fries never taste fresh and most of the burgers contain a weird combination of ingredients that are often tasteless. Workers seem depressed and overloaded, further disapproving the prices listed there.
Taavet H — Google review
They forgot to include the drink
Anna H — Google review
Hesburger is a Hesburger, it's quite good but if you're ordering it from Wolt or Bolt, then I'd suggest ordering from Eeden shopping mall's Hesburger instead. I don't really want to knock on workers in Anne Hesburger because they have an extremely hard job which pays quite little, but if you're using Bolt food or Wolt then the chance of your order being wrong is I'd say about 75%. Food itself is good and if you're at Anne Hesburger then the service is also quite good (unless you're in the drive-in).
Jaagop J — Google review
Food is nice. Sometimes they got my order mixed but changed everything right. Staff could be more welcoming

Restaurant
Restoran Fii is a small yet outstanding restaurant located in the corner of Lounakeskus and hotel Sophia. The contemporary menu offers unique flavor combinations, with standout dishes like raviolis and tartare. The chef's creativity shines through in each surprise dish, such as the mushroom soup amuse-bouche. The staff is known for being super friendly and attentive, providing excellent service that makes guests feel welcome and well taken care of.
A jewel in the hotel. The lamb I had was tender and the flavors they combined were fabulous. The best surprise was a dessert that is one of the best I've had in the world (before you ask, yes, I've traveled the world and live in France where Michelin stars can be found...) Creative and well plated...my only regret is I won't have time to try another meal.
Rebecca H — Google review
I was a bit disappointed here. Some drinks were missing from our order, and we had to ask twice for them. The food was nicely presented, but tasted absolutely average. The pasta was very watery and looked like soup. The seafood soup was okay, but really nothing special. Worth mentioning that prices are decent for Estonia and a Michelin-recommended restaurant.
Gediminas S — Google review
We had a great waitress during the evening we visited. She did a great job but ended up having to keep apologizing on behalf of the kitchen for the long waiting times and poor food quality at this Michelin Guide recommended restaurant. The beef picanha was a chunk of fibrous sinews. It didn't taste fresh or flavourful either. We asked for the plate to be returned to the kitchen. Our waitress informed that the kitchen tasted and agreed that it was a really bad cut that should not have been served but we were still charged for it. Waiting times in between dishes despite an almost empty restaurant were terribly long. Besides the beef, the fish dishes fared better but overall the food here has nice presentations but leave guests disappointed. For desserts, we had yet another unpleasant experience with "Chocolate". This tasted like someone diluted chocolate with water, froze it and decided it chic to serve it as dessert. Our meal that evening: STARTERS - 48°c Pähkla Trout - Grilled leek - Beef tartare MAINS - Artic Char - Beef picanha DESSERTS - Chocolate - Tikri mille feuille - Brewed coffee - Tea

Got to try out Restoran Fii for the first time for ‘Maitsev Tartu’ event. Menu was very interesting and creative - I mean look at the photos! I really enjoyed lovely service that was provided. Definitely will go back!
Angeelika P — Google review
I was really excited to try the Fii restaurant because my friend told me it was his best restaurant experience ever. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. The service was great, the waitress was very kind. Amouse-bouche was filo pastry filled with mozzarella, it was a pleasant surprise. For my starter I had beef tartare which immediately upon arrival surprised me with its colour and texture. It was brown, dry and over-seasoned. It tasted ok, but not like a true beef tartare. For my main I had beef sirloin with fondant potato, mushroom sauce and carrot. The meat and sauce were really tasty, the fondant potato was overpowered by the rosemary and the carrot had a bit of a stale taste. I saw reviews similar to mine so I guess something changed over time in this restaurant. It had a Michelin recommendation, but as of recently doesn’t anymore, which makes sense. Overall I was disappointed by the food experience, because I expected it to be one of the highlights of my short Tartu visit and it was just way too expensive for what it was.
Magdalena B — Google review
Had the 7-course degustation menu which was creative and delicious. They also agreed to provide us a vegetarian version as we booked ahead. About atmosphere, the place itself is really nice but the view is on a parking lot. So it's nicer in the dark when you can't see it
Dage S — Google review
What an outstanding experience! We took the tasting menu and each dish was more of a surprise than the previous one. The stand outs were definitely the raviolis and tartare. Also the mushroom soup as an amuse!! Amazing. The chef has clearly done a great job at coming up with unique flavour combinations. The service was also really friendly and attentive. The restaurant is also fairly small so you can enjoy a quiet dinner. The only thing to note is they don't have many vegetarian options if that's what you're looking for.
