Tartu Town Hall Square, situated in the heart of Tartu, Estonia, is a captivating destination for visitors. The square is surrounded by well-preserved buildings that showcase the city's history and charm. The iconic Tartu Town Hall with its Gothic-style facade stands as a prominent feature. Lined with cafes and restaurants, the square offers a charming atmosphere for exploration.
A nice square with beautiful Christmas decorations. Interesting stalls with artistic ideas and also a stall with mulled wine. There is also the possibility of ice skating on the square⛸️

Tartu’s town square is the heart of the city, lined with pastel-colored, renovated buildings that reflect its rich history. Cobblestone streets add charm, while statues and playful fountains bring the area to life. The “Kissing Students” fountain stands out as a popular photo spot and symbol of the town’s youthful spirit. It’s a perfect place to stroll, sit on a bench, or relax at a café terrace. We really loved this place! 😍😍😍
Kaisar T — Google review
It’s a beautiful plat, cool eating place outside, one can walk around, generally not crowded too much. Also ha tourist information centre located here. Kissing fountain is the place to take some pictures. Walking distance from the bus station.
Dr. R — Google review
Tricky to review a square unless it's unusual or spectacular. The Town Hall Square is wide and long, with a gentle slope and a pretty fountain in front of the Town Hall. It's cobbled and quite unspoilt. There is a small coffee shop with outdoor tables at the top right, near the fountain, but smokers should note that they don't allow smoking at the tables. There's also a good-sized pub about half-way up the square with reasonably-priced drinks, but it's an Irish Bar and, as an Irishman I try to avoid these when I'm travelling, so I can't review it. Rüütli Tn leads off the square, pretty much between the café and the pub, and has a large selection of restaurants in most price brackets
Niall C — Google review
Must-visit spot in Tartu! There are many restaurants, cafes, and cool architecture. I visited during #Tartu2024, which was beautiful, and many events happened.
Opallpyp — Google review
Such a lovely cobbled square with lots of cafes.

Town Hall is an amazing place, and the vibe is extraordinary. Lots of nice cafés and restaurants around. One can visit in the evenings to enjoy the surroundings. Some upgradation work is going on as the city has been declared as the cultural capital of Europe, and there are 300+ events lined up in 2024. Town Hall Square is the centre of all tge events and activities.
Niraj D — Google review
Amazing center place. Has many activities during the year. It serves as a main passing point with a lot of restaurants, clubs and stores on the side streets. There is also a park and shopping center nearby. It get busy on weekends/party days and it's a beautiful place overall

The Estonian National Museum (ENM), also known as ERM, is a modern museum located in Tartu. It was founded in 1909 and reopened in a new building in 2016. The museum showcases Estonian culture and folk art through its permanent exhibitions, 'Encounters' and 'Echo of the Urals,' which cover Estonia's cultural history and the Finno-Ugric peoples.
North of Tartun, the runway of the former Raadi Airfield appears to rise from the ground, revealing a gigantic, ultramodern building. What visitors see here is the main building of the Estonian National Museum (Eesti Rahva Muuseum), which opened in 2016. Founded in 1909 to house Jakob Hurt's ethnographic and folklore collection, the museum showcases the history, life, and traditions of the Estonian people and other Finno-Ugric peoples in Estonia. The museum opened in 1922 in Raadi Manor, the manor house where the Von Liphart family's collections were already housed. Between 1940 and 1991, most of the museum's cultural artifacts were hidden from the occupying forces. After regaining independence, the Estonian government launched a design competition for a new museum building in 2005. The French architectural trio Dan Dorell, Lina Ghotmeh, and Tsuyoshi Tane won the competition, and their design has been open to visitors since 2016. The museum is a highly interesting destination for anyone interested in learning more about Estonian (and Finno-Ugric) culture, folklore, and history. Thanks to the interactive information panels, this is also easily accessible for non-Estonians. Highly recommended!

The Estonian National Museum is a wonderful example of the harmony between tradition, history, and modern architecture. The exhibits are presented in very interesting ways, with engaging formats and solutions that capture your attention. The museum’s spaces are beautiful, creating a pleasant and inspiring experience. There is a café where you can grab a bite – the food was fresh and tasty. We visited with our family and spent about 2.5 hours here – everyone really enjoyed it. Recommended for anyone looking to combine culture with a delightful time together.

A very great and technologically advanced place. The exhibitions are creative and interesting and well-detailed with a lot of informations that don't feel much and dry. Keep in mind, that you will need 2-3 hours here to fully explore the place, so visiting 1 hours before closing is not reccommended!!
Tamás M — Google review
An incredible and comprehensive history of Estonia. You could easily spend a couple days here exploring everything in depth. Half price sunday admitting was a nice suprise!
Pizzarocket — Google review
The Estonia National Museum is a stunning destination that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology to create an immersive and interactive experience. Its extensive collection spans historical artifacts, cultural treasures, and modern innovations, providing a comprehensive journey through Estonia’s rich heritage. One of the museum’s most impressive features is its use of advanced digital technology. Visitors can engage with interactive touch screens, audiovisual displays, and digital guides to explore the context of each exhibit in detail. The museum also offers augmented reality (AR) features, bringing historical objects to life in fascinating ways. Beyond its technological appeal, the museum is thoughtfully designed with a modern and open layout, making it both comfortable and visitor-friendly. It beautifully balances the essence of traditional culture with a futuristic perspective, offering a harmonious blend of the past and the present. With its exceptional collection and innovative approach, the Estonia National Museum is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, technology lovers, or anyone seeking a remarkable museum experience. Highly recommended! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Visiting the Estonian National Museum in Tartu was an unforgettable experience. The architecture alone takes my breath away – bold, modern, and yet deeply rooted in the nation’s history. Inside, the exhibitions tell the story of Estonia with such creativity, depth, and soul that you feel both educated and moved at the same time. This visit has made my love for this remarkable country and its warm, resilient people even stronger. A place where past and present meet so beautifully – I cannot recommend it enough.
Michaela S — Google review
We got tickets that are an interactive part of your visit, you can change the info posts to your own language with them, but sadly the big screens rarely worked and many of the games are only in estonian. All in all worth a visit, reserve at least 3h-4h if you want to go through everything.

Established in 1632, the University of Tartu is a renowned classical university with four colleges. It is known for its impressive neoclassical main building and is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Northern Europe. The campus, which hosts around 14,000 students, features historic buildings and bridges. One of the highlights on campus is the Old Observatory, which also houses the university's museum where visitors can learn about its rich history.
I visited this University during the ERCP Conference to present my paper. It is an excellent University with a rich history. Loved strolling around the fabulous campus, gardens with historical sculptures and modern architecture.

The Ruins of Tartu Cathedral, also known as the University of Tartu Museum, stand as a significant historical and architectural landmark in Estonia. Dating back to the 13th century, this impressive cathedral has undergone various transformations over time. Originally planned as a basilica, it now features high choirs, columns, and arches in the brick Gothic style. The cathedral is surrounded by a wall that once separated the bishop's residence from the rest of the city.
Absolutely fabulous! Climbed the tower to have a great view into the ruined cathedral and over the city. The restored section which is now the Tartu University Museum was fascinating with history of the Tartu Cathedral. A perfect place to visit whilst in Tartu.

Its worth one visit and to know the history associated to it if you're a history buff. You don't need more that 20 mins at the spot. But from the ruins, you can walk down to the city sqyluare, have a hot chocolate at Pierre and laze around the river at some cozy restaurants.
K M — Google review
Until the early 13th century, one of the strongest fortresses of the pagan Estonians stood on Toomemägi (Cathedral Hill). In 1224, this fortress was conquered and destroyed by the Knights of the Brothers of the Sword, who subsequently built a bishop's castle (which was destroyed by fire in 1667) and a Brick Gothic church on this site. This cathedral, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was the seat of the Dorpat diocese and one of the largest churches in Eastern Europe. The church was finally completed at the end of the 15th century. Its two massive towers were 66 meters high. In 1525, the Reformation reached Dorpat, and during an iconoclasm on January 10 of that year, the cathedral was severely damaged. In 1558, the Catholic Church officially abandoned the cathedral. Plans by the Catholic Polish rulers were abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances, and the Swedish rulers were uninterested in restoring the church, causing its decline to continue. In 1760, the towers were partially demolished, reaching a height of 22 meters. After the University of Dorpat reopened in 1802, architect Johann Wilhelm Krause was commissioned to build a university library amid the ruins of the cathedral. After the university library moved into new premises in 1981, the University Museum was established in the old library. Ruin or not, the cathedral is and remains impressive!

Without even visiting museum, were disappointed at evening there was some construction going on for some event, in the upcoming morning there were trucks and dismantling of sort of tent took place. So this is all we were able to see :(

It's a beautiful place for those who love to see what used to be, whst it is and wonde rhow would stand in the years to come. They do ceremonies here, weddings or celebrations. Surrounded by forest and close by to other more beautiful sights.
Jhen F — Google review
We visited the Tartu Cathedral as a family and really enjoyed the beautiful architecture and historic atmosphere. It’s a peaceful and fascinating place to explore, and we spent a lovely time learning about its history. What could be improved: It would be helpful to have clearer signs or information panels, so visitors know more about the different areas and history. Some areas could use a little maintenance to make the visit even more comfortable. We really enjoyed our visit! However, because of the small issues mentioned above, we would love to give 4.5 stars, but unfortunately, it’s only possible to rate 4.

St. John Church in Tartu is a gothic brick Lutheran church located in the Old Town. While the interior may not be particularly spectacular, it offers one of the best panoramic views of the city from its tower, making it a must-visit attraction. Climbing to the top is relatively manageable with a small fee for entry. The church is adorned with terracotta sculptures, some of which are well-preserved and can be admired inside.
Fantastic example of 16th century architecture if I remember correctly. Very peaceful inside, they have an organ. Nice little gift shop too.

St. John’s Church in Tartu is beautifully renovated, it stands out with its red brick exterior. Inside, you’ll find a peaceful atmosphere and restored medieval details. You can climb the narrow stairs to the tower for views over the old town. It's a must-visit for history and architecture lovers. We loved it 😍 And what a fun lady at the shop! 💃🏼 Ticket only 3€ in July 2025

Recently renovated, 2005, this is a nice church. The main characteristic is the so called 1000 figurines inside the church. Inside you can’t really see them actually because of their position. You can take pictures and access the tower against entrance fees

This is an interesting church in the historical old town of Tartu, which plenty of features that make it unique not only in Estonia, but in the Baltic region and northern Europe. It has been verywell renovated

You can visit the church, but it's not worth it paying the fee and going up 138 stairs steps as the obsertory is not well maintained and the view from up there (through glass) is super ordinary and not interesting as you see in the following photo I took:

AHHAA Science Centre, established in 1997, is the largest science center in the Baltics. It offers an array of interactive exhibits, a planetarium, workshops, and a science theatre with special effects. The center provides an engaging and educational experience for the whole family. Children can enjoy hands-on experiments and various shows while exploring historical medicine collections dating back to 1803.
This is a must visit for a family day out. The exhibits are interactive, hands-on and engaging for visitors of all ages. The cafe is a great spot for lunch with daily specials and a kids menu. There is free parking in the basement. The gift shop has a wide selection. Highly recommended if you in or near Tartu.

We visited with our family and were absolutely impressed. We’ve been to several museums of this type, but this one deserves a full 5 out of 5. The exhibits engaged everyone – both adults and teenagers. There’s a lot to see and do, so we never got bored. We spent 3.5 hours here, and the time flew by. We could have stayed even longer, but unfortunately had to leave. The museum is enjoyable for children of all ages – even the little ones will find plenty to do. Everything is very interesting and well thought out. The only area for improvement would be providing more visual instructions, such as icons or pictures showing what to do or where to press. There’s also a café on site – we didn’t try it, but it’s great to have the option for a break. I would happily visit again.

If you're ever in Tartu, the Science Centre AHHAA is a must-visit! This place is not just for science lovers but for everyone, whether you're an adult or visiting with family, it offers something for everyone. The children will love the engaging activities, while adults will appreciate the depth of information and unique experiences on offer. But that's not all; there are live science shows that bring experiments to life, making them both entertaining and educational. The museum’s family-friendly atmosphere ensures that it's a perfect place for a day out. You’ll find cafes and comfortable seating, so you can relax and enjoy the exhibits without a rush. This is a fantastic place to visit with your children. Everyone will find something interesting and amazing here. We go there every year and will do again! It’s so great to see how,as children grow up, their understanding of things changes each time. At the planetarium,we always choose one of the films that corresponds to the children’s interests at that moment. Amazing!
Anita Š — Google review
Really fun and educational. Not just for kids but for grow ups too. Some reviews already mentioned the interactive elements in the centre and the bike is one not to miss! Easily spend a day if you are interested in the science behind the fun. Highly recommended.
Stefan T — Google review
We visited the AHHAA Science Centre as a family of three — parents and a child — and absolutely loved it! It’s quite affordable, and we spent the whole day there until sunset. There are so many fascinating things to see and try — it’s a perfect place for both kids and adults to explore and have fun together. What could be improved: The big bicycle on top is exciting but also a bit scary when you stop — it feels like you might roll away! It would be perfect if there were staff members on both sides to help and make guests feel safer. In the experiment area, the ventilation could be better — sometimes it’s a bit hard to breathe after many people have been doing experiments. The car simulator is amazing, but the queue is very long. It would be great to either add one more simulator or introduce a timed system with the wristbands — for example, each person gets 5 minutes to play, then a 10-minute cooldown before using it again. Even with these small suggestions, it’s still a fantastic science centre — highly recommended for everyone!

I really enjoyed this museum, especially my son. Museum is quite big, so it is not like for 5 minutes visit. Two floors, many rooms with very different toys. It was very nice to see old toys from 90th, so nastolgic. What I really liked that there are many places for playing also, and a small but cosy food court with an drink and food machines. Even once you should visit this place if you stay in Tartu with your kids. The only complaint is about parking, it was quite hard to find free parking there, because I'm not local and didn't manage how to pay for parking, as there are no parking payment machines.
Igors J — Google review
Went there with two small boys and had a ton of fun. The temporary exhibition was about teddy bears. Recognized a lot of them. The permanent one had me walking through memory lane. A ton of things were straight out of the 1980s, from when I was playing. Add an outdoor carousel as a cherry on top of the cake and there is the perfect recipe.

Based on first assumption you probably think this is something just for kids but not only. For me as an adult I found there many items from my childhood bringing back many nostalgic memories. Also playground for smaller kids and hands on workshop for bit bigger ones. Really liked the place and recommend to visit it.

These replicas were acquired in the 1860s from various museums across Europe to enrich students' understanding of art, history, and culture. The museum is a prominent attraction in Tartu, Estonia, offering a diverse collection of contemporary and modern art.
Great visit, thanks to the university students who guide you through the old university building and the secret prison room. The art department is a funny experience in how teaching worked in the beginning of the 20th century.

Exciting place for entertaining your kids with basic scientific facts such as electricity experiments, some of them were not functional though, energy transfer etc. Plus museum. The library is renovated so we could not enjoyed the place. Last floor is not necessary recommended for kids as it is all about skeletons and related

A bit of a walk to the start, but I loved the place. I spent good 5min staring and this one specific statue. Quiet, beautiful. Worth it, if you appreciate art
Gabrielė M — Google review
It wasn't particularly interesting - bunch of reproductions of famous statues from around the world, some local paintings. The highlight were the 2 mummies. The DNA related installation with the bibles was also quite interesting. Was included into combined ticket from the University of Tartu Museum

There was 2 interesting exhibition. 1. Mummy chamber 2. Death mask Rest of museum, i would say, was okey.

A fantastic museum! A lot of various exhibits, you can find pieces of art from different ages. Faces of death exhibition is truly fascinating, the video stories grab your attention. The KGB Cells Museum, situated in a gray house on Riyamagi Mountain, offers a unique and somber exploration of Estonia's post-war liberation war. The museum showcases cells, punishment cells, and various artifacts that shed light on the crimes committed during the communist regime. It provides a heavy yet important educational experience, allowing visitors to understand the dark history of Russian occupation in Estonia.
I went here today as part of the Estonian museum night. The staff was friendly, spoke English and the entry fee was €1. I found it very interesting and educational. All exhibitions and signs were available in English, which made it easy to follow. It was quite packed with people, the space is limited inside, thus if I had to paid full price, I would go at a less busy moment. It doesn’t take very long to complete everything, I’d say 30-45 minutes at most. Would definitely recommend going!

Very nice and impressive small museum. The history memory is well preserved in Estonia, as a Chinese I really appreciate that.

A fascinating (but dark) exploration of the history of the Russian occupation of Estonia. The museum is self paced and self guided. It is great for any history buffs but not ideal for children. There is a small gift shop and a clean toilet on site. Tickets were seven Euros per adult.

I've been to a similar one in Riga and there was a guided tour. With a guide you could definitely get more out of the place. There were texts in many languages which was a big plus. The museum itself is quite small. I recommend taking a guided tour if possible.

Another gem for historians to get insight into the cruelty of the Russian World. In an unassuming grey building lives were torn apart and the beginning of the end for many became reality. A great exhibition about the Forrest Brothers with the contents of unintended time capsule presented to give insight into the last moments of freedom fighters caching their belongings. Never forget the cruelty of occupation.

Such an interesting piece of history that’s been preserved. It’s a heavy experience, not something that’s pleasant to learn about but important to understand and really well done. It’s scary to think about what has gone on in these rooms, but it’s nice that they’re now being used in an educational way. The exhibits are really well done.

30 minutes enough. Overall, it's good place to visit if you are interested in history and ofc soviets. It would be nice if there are more to discover. Museum may have interesting exhibition in the future. For now, it was about '' Russia - Georgia War 2008'' , the topic itself is interesting to me but the quality of exhibition was not good and it was only in Estonian

This place is small, but the building still remains as original. It was a strong message just seeing the aisle and doors for prisoners' room and the torturing chair. It's a worth place to understand the modern Estonian history as well

A tasteful repurposing of an old building. Slightly underwhelming for adults but a great place to enjoy with kids. The library section is outstanding and the function floor was being prepared for a wedding.

Great interactive place, which would also be extremely fun for the children. And it's located in a reconstructed part of an astoundingly beautiful ruins, which you must also explore and visit the tower. And the old lift in the museum is a throwback experience on its own

This museum was a surprise discovery for our family during a drizzle October afternoon in Tartu. The various exhibitions are beautifully presented and it's clear that they've been put together with care. The love of science seeps through in every nook of every room.

Good and interesting museum. Building is old but inside it’s very fresh and beautiful. There are several places for kids activities. Tickets are cheap. Together with tower visit it’s 7 eur/person. Staff is very kind and helpful. At the entrance they explained where to start and helped to get into elevator. An old elevator was very interesting for our son. Expositions are nice, we most of all liked a science library in 5th floor.

The University of Tartu, Museum of Natural History offers a captivating journey through the history of Earth's living and non-living nature, showcasing 8,000 exhibits from Estonia and around the world. The collection includes rocks, minerals, fossils, mounts, skeletons, and more. Located near Tartu in the village of Exi, this museum is renowned for its fascinating exhibitions related to the Ice Age.
An amazing museum to visit. So many animals and minerals shown with detailed information available. The museum is well planned, has great lighting and everything can be viewed in good detail. Great place to bring kids to show them the actual size of animals. My little one was very intrigued seeing the size of a lion. We don’t have them roaming around freely, so it was rather special. As an adult, it’s also a very cool place to visit. You get a very detailed overview of a lot of different species and earn more trivia knowledge. All in all, worth it. Do buy a yearly museum card, if you’re planning on visiting. 6 total visits in any of the applicable museums within a year will already mean you’ve gotten even moneywise.

We visited this please on weekend and it was almost empty, just couple of visitors. Museum is located in 3rd floor and starts with rocks and meteors. There are several interactive stands with interesting quiz game, earth history and etc. Our son liked all collection of stones/meteors/minerals, he called it “stone age”. Personal was really kind and did some suggestions. We spend around 1 hour there.

If you are not the local one - don't hesitate to visit this museum. So much to see and learn. Carefully created collections starting from minerals to big mammals, ancient organisms, worms, animals, some real animals, plants, worms etc. All collections are seperated by groups and are easy to watch and understand. The museum features a permanent display of machinery from different eras, along with rotating exhibitions and a selection of handmade notebooks for purchase. Visitors can enjoy an hour-long tour led by the museum director, Lemmit, which includes demonstrations and the opportunity to create their own paper or prints using antique presses.
What an absolute gem of a museum. Dropped in and was given a tour by Karolina and she was absolutely lovely. Learning the history of paper, printing presses, and book binding was fascinating. It was also super neat to make paper and postcards to take home! Very interactive and interesting. It was also lovely to meet the museum cat, Ruby. She was excellent at her supervisory role and I saw her being vigilant, checking on everyone to ensure they did their jobs.

Interesting way of visiting a museum, as the ticket includes an excursion with interesting explanations of printing and paper history. Another interesting thing is that many of the machines from the exhibition still work and the staff gives opportunity to make your own postcards and paper. And also the local caretaker-cat Ruby, he is just amazing. The best museum experience lately. Excursions in estonian and english. Shortly: interactive museum with free tours, 100% recommended for locals and tourists.

Absolutely fascinating tour into the world of letterpresses and paper making! Personnel passion to the subject really shows and they were super friendly. They only give guided tours and for a good reason: machinery is fully functional and they give live demos of those. You get to make your own paper and press your very own postcard. Kids (7 and 5 year old) were absolutely mesmerized by everything. Absolutely recommend this for everyone!
Niklas C — Google review
Interesting and quite large museum about printing history. You can see impressive amount of printing and bookmaking machinery. Museum visitors get guided tour for the ticket, where full process of printing is explained from paper making till book binding. Also all printing and binding mashinery are explained during the tour. You get to see the machines from really clouse. The tour lasts about an hour. Museum offeres several cool printing workshops. For most workshops you need to preorder by contacting Typa museum. The workshops are for various skill level, from pre-school till grownups. Museum has little cute souvenir shop at front desk. You can buy printed poducts and some candy there mainly.

Very cool museum- really impressive collection of old letterpress machines and other equipment, that works! Choice of different old fonts used in newspapers- for example astrological or chess! When the university was finally reopened at the beginning of the 19th century, Emperor Alexander I took possession of Toomemäe University and a park and university buildings were built there. The anatomical rotund was the first to be completed, and soon the main building of the university, as well as the observatory. A university library was built on the ruins of a powerful medieval cathedral. A romantic stone hill - Musumägi - was built in the park and the former sand quarry - Kassitoome - was landscaped. There are many sculptures on Toomemäe (KE von Baer, N. Pirogov, Fr. R. Faehlmann, Fr. GW Struve, KJ Peterson and others) and buildings of architectural value: former Dome Church (now UT History Museum), Observatory, Old Anatomical, Supreme Court, English - and the Devil's Bridge.

I went here tonight as part of the Estonian museum night, the entry fee was €1 and the place was packed. I had to wait for 50 minutes to get inside, at some point I thought they might be giving away some drinks for free, but no, people were all very interested in going here. Having been to multiple beer museums, I had a high expectation. The experience part was lacking, I was missing being able to try different beers and learn more about the current process, it was heavily focused on history. There was beer available, but at a fee, which were the same ones I can get in the supermarket. Kudos to them for having all the information available in English, it made everything easy to follow and understand. Would I got here again, probably not. Besides the experience part lacking. I found that it was heavily focused on upselling. In the museum downstairs by selling different beers and again in the giftshop and bar, not to forget the stand near the insanely long queue.

It’s been recently renovated and it was su interactive and interesting to explore around and see the old machinery, the history of beer and the history of this particular brand. They had also the oldest preserved beer in the world recovered from a shipwreck, and the whole thing you do it underground in the old factory. The beer tasting gives you 4 different kinds of beer at the end and even it being just a tasting they had plenty of beer to enjoy! Overall would definitely recommend.

I am a simple human who enjoys the taste of beer. One of my favourite beers in fact is Alexander, manufactured by A.leCoq. A few weeks ago a friend of mine showed me a picture of this cap(it was an Alexander beer cap). I was excited to the moon and back, the cap looked amazing good material and everything . So i asked her where she saw this amazing article of clothing. She replied that she had seen it in the gift shop at the beer museum. So i got fixed on visting the establishment. BUT!! when arriving at aforementioned place I was baffled. The fine cap i had seen a few weeks ago had been replaced by some plastic abomination. This fact made me not want to visit the rest of the museum and I left momentarily.

As you step inside, the luxurious decor, highlighted by a beautifully painted ceiling, sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet understated, making it an ideal spot for engaging conversations over exquisite dishes that are thoughtfully presented. Wonderful breakfast menu for hotel guests. Very tasty food, very kind and helpful service, overall - delightful experience. Thank you for having us!
Vilius Š — Google review
We reserved a table for 2 for New Year's Eve. We had very high hopes for this restaurant given its stellar reputation, but our experience fell a bit short of expectations and to be honest, we are very dissapointed. While the presentation of the dishes was creative, the flavors didn’t quite come together for us, no balance and mix of too many different products. The portion sizes were also quite small, leaving us wanting more, especially given the high price point. The service, while attentive, could have been a touch warmer, they were in rush. One notable detail was the garnish on the dishes—stalks of greens instead of tender leaves, which felt like a missed opportunity. The duck was especially disappointing, as one portion was overcooked while another was underdone, which made for an inconsistent experience. We can see why others might enjoy this place, but it didn’t align with our tastes and expectations at all.
Linda K — Google review
They played Italian music when we visited, and Antonius is a Roman name, but the cuisine is not Italian. I would describe the food as global-influenced "New Baltic" (and that probably sounds pretentious). The highlight was the scallop appetizer, but everything was tasty -- the herring appetizer, the lamb, and the sea bass. Keep in mind that the mains aren't much bigger than the appetizers.
Andre K — Google review
We visited at 6:15 on Thursday, the restaurant was empty except for another table of 6. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it. In a 2.5 hour meal we spend 2 hours not eating, but waiting for the next course, particularly irksome for the appetizers - we happened to be hungry. The food itself was delicious and sophisticated, worthy of “haute” , except that my lamb entree was served practically cold, adding insult to the prolonged wait injury. This wait is excessive even for a slow dining establishment. If the kitchen is short staffed and cannot cook promptly we should not have been admitted.

Breakfast is from their à la carte menu, supported by small buffet to get you fulfilled. Would have expected a better coffee ☕️ They have takeaway station thou.

Food: Amazing. The price, their presentation, taste, everything and everything was just perfect. I had duck and a plate for two, best 1 hour of my life. Place: Place is nice since it belongs to the hotel, they have a nice terrace, can be a little cold tho so be prepared. Service: Service wasn’t bad, quite fast and timely but the table had bread crumbs on it when we were seated. The waitress was Estonian, thus she didn’t speak English much but seemed she could speak English but it is okay. But I was with an Estonian and all the time the waitress was addressing him, talking to him, asking to him, thanking to him. But she seemed very nice and gentle but “thank you” isn’t a very complicated English word to learn if I can thank in Estonian…

Humal BISTRO is an integral part of Tartu's cultural history, offering guests a sense of freedom through its food and drink selection and historical space. Located in the center of Tartu, it shares a building with Pallas Hotel, which underwent a complete renovation in 2020. The interior design is inspired by artists who studied at Pallas Art School.
Very nice place and location of the restaurant. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Regarding the food, I can say this, unfortunately I can't give you a higher rating than 5/5 because the system doesn't let up, but you definitely restaurant deserve more. The food was very very good, I would happily go back again. The chips with dill were superb, as was the Spicy vodka rigatoni, this pate is definitely in the top 3 I've ever eaten in my life. I also took the addition of prosciutto, which made the dish even more exceptional. The schnitzel was also very tasty. A restaurant is worth visiting.

Attentive waiting staff, even with some large parties in the restaurant. Good, delicious food. Well cooked and presented. Was there during cocktail week, and had 3 great cocktails with the meal. Highly recommend the Lavender Sour if it's on the menu again. Cost was less than expected for 3 courses and 3 cocktails. And a great treat for during my travels

Humal in Tartu is a fantastic spot for steak lovers! The steak was cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Paired with their wide selection of craft beers, it made for an excellent meal. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff is knowledgeable about both the food and drinks. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great steak and beer experience in Tartu!

Against my usual suspicion of hotel restaurants, the name of this place “Hops” attracted attention. A large drinks menu with some “irrelevant” stuff on tap, but the highlight is eight local beers from Anderson and Puhaste in cans. The tap rooms are nearby, but not often open and definitely don’t have the excellent food options here. Friendly staff and a nice view of the lively streets outside. A great place to start an evening of Tartu craft beer.

It was perfect in every way. Super attentive service, very kind attention to our kids, wonderful food with original touches, moderate prices... THANK YOU!

Lamb burger was mediocre. Although three others in my table said they liked it. Pedron peppers, cheese balls and ribs were awesome and staff was helpful. Food was more like presentation first and quality second. Good selection of beers both craft and basic

The Oskar Lutsu majamuuseum is a charming local institution dedicated to an esteemed Estonian author who holds significant importance for Estonian culture. Though its location is not ideal for car access and foreign language information is limited, the museum offers various engaging events such as writer meet-ups, small celebrations, and temporary exhibitions that make it worth a visit regardless of one's language proficiency.

Nice little local museum, devoted to a good Estonian writer not much known or translated elsewhere but quite central for Estonian identity. It's not very well situated or accessible by car, and the amount of information available in other languages besides Estonian is limited. Yet they like to organize little events - meetings with writers, small celebrations, temporary exhibitions - which might still be worth visiting, whatever language you might speak.

Tartu Market Hall, housed in its original Soviet-era building from 1938, has undergone a complete interior renovation featuring modern hygienic counters. This bustling marketplace is a treasure trove of local products such as smoked fish sourced from the nearby Emajõgi River, homemade pickles, and Estonian honey. Located in the heart of Tartu, it offers an array of fresh produce and regional specialties including locally smoked fish, cured meats, vegetables, cheese, and bakery items.
The Hall is renovated. Large area, very well organised, clean, lots of products, many of which are local. Nice marketing as well.

Defintely a good place to find fresh and local food: fish, meat, vegetables, cheese, bakery etc. When you are new in Tartu or visiting Estonia, go check out! But just in case take cash with you because not all sellers accept card payment. Check out different sellers as you may find some of the better prices in specific selling points.

Good closed market place where to find fresh local fish and meat. There's also a nice selection of locally smoked fish and cured meats. Also veggies are available, in general a much more reliable place and with more fair prices and better quality than the close open market. A clear recommendation when in Tartu and looking for quality meat and fish shopping.

Cathedral Hill Park, located in Tartu, Estonia, holds historical significance as the site of the ancient Tarbatu Fortress and the medieval Tartu Cathedral. The cathedral, dating back to the 13th-16th century, has endured plunder and raids throughout history. Visitors can enjoy stunning views from this park and engage in various outdoor activities such as off-road longboarding and cycling. Additionally, there are recreational amenities like an outdoor pingpong table.
Really nice hill to climb and have your peaceful morning walk. Enjoy a picnic during the afternoon, or just wonder around. In the early evenings lots of people are hanging out - losing track of time and relax when ever you want to. “In Romantic art, nature—with its uncontrollable power, unpredictability, and potential for cataclysmic extremes—offered an alternative to the ordered world of Enlightenment thought.”

Great park with great views. My first experience of off-road longboarding was here (picture included), had great fun. After exploring this park a little bit more, I saw an off-road cycling opportunity too. Outdoor pingpong table available as well. Definitely worth checking out for travellers: two bridges - Angel's and Devil's, if I remember it right, old castle-like building and more. In case you are worried, nothing was broken after that fall.
