If you only have 2 days to spend in Barnard Castle, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Barnard Castle is a historic market town built around the impressive ruins of its medieval castle, which overlook a scenic stretch of the River Tees. Visitors come for the Bowes Museum, a grand French-style chateau housing notable European art collections, including works by Goya and Canaletto. The town’s cobbled streets, independent shops and antique dealers add to its appeal, and it serves as a handy base for exploring Teesdale and the wider North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
With favorites like The Mission Hall Antiques Centre, Three Horseshoes Hotel, and The Old Well Inn, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Moments Cafe and Barnard Castle Fisheries so you can get the best taste of Barnard Castle while you’re here. Specialty Museums
Nestled in the charming market town of Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum stands as a magnificent testament to French architectural elegance. This grand Victorian mansion is home to an impressive array of fine and decorative art spread across three floors. Visitors can marvel at masterpieces from renowned artists like El Greco, Goya, and Canaletto, alongside exquisite ceramics, textiles, and tapestries.
I am delighted with the textile collection. The outfits are handmade, have a stunning cut, the models are incredibly complex and are made with jewelry precision in every detail. My great-grandmother had equipment for the full cycle of making fabric from flax and hemp. I know what a complex and labor-intensive process this is. I am amazed at the quality of the fabric on the suits, this is truly highly skilled work. Great bonus of electric car charging in the parking lot and free parking.

Firstly the grounds are gorgeous! Just take a book and seat on one of the benches and take it all in :) Beautiful collection of paintings. Some real impressive ones actually Definitely worth the visit. I was not a huge fan of the swan show…nothing extraordinary. The cafe is nice. The bookshop/gift shop are a must
Binta S — Google review
Loved this place. The pet project installation was wonderful. My daughters made some new friends who all got involved with the most fabulous creative play in that space. Meanwhile I had a moment of meditation (some might call it a snooze) with my headphones in on one of the incredibly comfortable 3D canvasses! Fascinating - history and some artworks and curiosities. I remember the two headed calf from when I was a kid (about 40 years ago) Magical to see the silver swan in action. Highly recommended- beautiful grounds as well. Nice gift shop (quality gifts at reasonable prices). Bought a tea towel ~ we kinda collect them. Staff were all nice… and authentic if that makes sense.

Had a great day out. Took my elderly mum in her wheelchair. Access was excellent if a little in the back door feel. Disabled toilets could of been nicer and easier to find but they were clean. Staff were all lovely and could not of been more helpful. Cafe was excellent. I can highly recommend the soup. Both mum and I had a lovely time.
Janice D — Google review
Fabulous day out! I'm a wheelchair user and found the museum very accessible. The staff here were amazing! An absolute credit to the museum! Loved the Silver Swan demonstration at 2pm. The cream tea in the cafe was delicious 😋 The gift shop is very nice too and has a range of reasonably priced goods. We paid the membership fee and will definitely be back a few times.

The Bowes Museum is such a fantastic place to visit! The grand building and beautiful grounds make it feel really special from the moment you arrive. Inside, there’s so much to see fascinating exhibitions, incredible artwork, and interesting displays that keep both adults and children engaged. The café is lovely, serving good food and cakes with a relaxed atmosphere. There’s even a small play park in the grounds, which was a great bonus for the children and gave us chance to enjoy a coffee while they played. A brilliant day out for families, history lovers, and anyone visiting the area.
Outdoor F — Google review
An incredible place too visit. So much to see, make sure you arrive early as you'll need plenty of time! Astonishing world of art, great history in a wonderful. Friendly staff and a more than decent cafe /restaurant providing very generous portions. A must see if the silver swan automaton.
Tony S — Google review
Fantastic day out today. The staff were all brilliant, kind and offered help. Quite a bit for kids to see and do. We all enjoyed the exhibits on display. Oh and the Silver Swan is amazing! We rang up to request a wheelchair for one of us before arrival and it was no problem. Most of the museum is easily accessible to all. Cafe was good with prompt service and helpful staff. Good value as well. Thank you to all staff today!

Located in the heart of Barnard Castle, County Durham, The Witham is a modern multi-purpose arts center that offers a diverse events program including music, theatre, film, and comedy. It hosts various cultural events in surrounding village halls and churches as well as an annual outdoor Shakespeare production by The Castle Players. Visitors praise the venue for its excellent sound quality and convenient access to parking. Additionally, it features a cafe and a hall for hosting shows and events.
Paid another visit to the cafe bar at The Witham this morning for morning coffee. Always a lovely experience here- absolutely the very best cheese scones served in the North East and super coffee. We travel over 30 minutes to get here and it's definitely worth it! Our scones were enormous ( see photo), lovely and cheesy with a tasty little kick plus 3 butter pats to melt on the inside. £2.90 is a bargain for such a moreish snack served in a warm, cosy setting. The whole menu offered here is varied so would suit everyone visiting. Well done to all the lovely team.😍

We went here to see Scott Bennett the comedian who was fantastic. This is a nice ,intimate venue were no matter where you sit you have a good view of the stage . Small bar inside which did have quite a queue but did take to long to get served.
Lisa S — Google review
Went to see the band China Crisis here and it was absolutely fantastic. Again the group was outstanding and just never fail to impress. The sound in the hall was very good. The Witham was an excellent run venue and what I find incredible is access and parking all so near without the agro of trying to find a space. The bar staff were friendly and prompt. I like to congratulate whoever is running these shows behind the scenes as they are definitely doing a fantastic job. Well done to all.

The Durham Brass Bash this evening was such a good event, thank you! We really enjoyed all three bands - the JB Orchestra, the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band and the New York Brass Band.
Sarah W — Google review
This review is based on the "Made in Tennesee " performance only which we have been unfortunate to have to watch. I am not sure if it is the acoustics that were not in sync with the vocalists, but you could not really hear them above the music and what you could hear was muted and incoherent.. We were in row J and left during the break. It seemed that others left before we did. Some of the musicians seemed reasonable enough but for £25 each for a ticket, it needs to have a lot better balance between the musicians and singers. Very disappointing ,but good luck if they are going on tour in America
Ernie H — Google review
Visited on 2nd March to see comedian, Simon Evans (brilliant, by the way). The intimacy of the auditorium makes it an ideal venue for comedy. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful. Small, reasonably well stocked bar area. The opportunity to pre-order interval drinks and have the bar open after the performance would have been nice, but this is a small venue run, I think, by volunteers who do a wonderful job and you can't everything. Will most certainly be back.

Went to see the bodysnatchers and jeckle and hide on Thursday the2 October it was brilliant well done to the cast our first time there definitely be back again the staff were wonderful very helpful.

Indian restaurant

Babul's Barnard Castle is a popular spot with 12 pubs catering to various tastes, including the Old Well on the Bank with a garden backing onto the Castle walls. The place offers an easy ordering system for drinks and bills through a tablet. While some visitors found their dishes less spicy than expected, others praised the outstanding curries and cocktails. The restaurant also provides online booking, free parking, and generous portions of delicious food like lamb rojan josh and pannier sagg.
I love eating at Babuls as food is always very good and time was no exception. We had Lamb curry and the Kerala Prawns curry and both dishes were delicious. For starters we had keema Pav which was also very delicious. Staff is very polite and go out of their way to look after customers. I like rue quirky layout of the restaurant as its is split over two floors. I love the ordering system, you have tablets on your table and you can order drinks as and when, and can view your bill. I visited on Friday afternoon around 7.30pm and there’s was number of free on street parking spots available. It may be a bit busier during the day. I would recommend this restaurant and would visit again
Harji G — Google review
We visited Babul’s in Barnard Castle on Valentine’s Day, and it was definitely worth booking ahead as it was busy. On most days, you could probably walk in without an issue. The restaurant has a great vibe, and the prices are reasonable for the setting. The food was really nice—I’d highly recommend the bhuna (both chicken and paneer)—but some sides, like the naan, felt a bit plain. Portion sizes were also a bit inconsistent; the loaded fries were generous, but the main Indian dishes could have been bigger. The tablet service system wasn’t for me, but others might like it. Overall, I’d definitely return and recommend it!
Ethan T — Google review
Came here last night on speck. We were offered a table after only a 15 min wait. The service was good and shown how to use the pad to call for service. The food was delicious and I had a dish I’d never had before. It was all excellent and will definitely come again.
Andrew B — Google review
I say it every time I go to a new Indian restaurant, but this might have been some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I would definitely recommend selecting a few small plates and eating in a more tapas style and get a curry to share. Staff are happy to talk about the food and give recommendations. And the Drinks selection was great, with some very unique cocktails. Would definitely go back.
Ry C — Google review
I had the pleasure of heading here with a friend a couple of nights ago. When we sat down, I was a little bit sceptical, as this isn't your usual Indian restaurant, which I've been used to over the years. It's a modern 21st-century take on the classic, wonderful Indian restaurant from years gone by. The menu (I thought) at first was a little sparse, but that was me being greedy, naive, and wanting EVERYTHING! However, there is plenty for everyone, and OMG, the food is to die for!!! I chose the Tikka Chicken Dansak, Onion Pilau Rice, and Keema Naan. I'm still dreaming about it now!!! It's the best I have EVER tasted. Service... amazing. Food.....out of this world. If you are ever in Barnard Castle, please make it a point of going here for a really world-class meal. I can say that because I work all over the world and this place is up there at the top!! Can't wait to go back!!
Roy B — Google review
Ended up deciding on an Indian takeaway and wasn't disappointed with our choice! A very extensive and even quirky menu suited to all tastes. The main dish portion sizes were huge - especially the chunks of chicken! It properly felt like you're getting your money's worth. The quality of the food was bangin'! Really tasty, succulent and cooked perfectly. If I'm ever going to be in Barnard Castle again, I wouldn't hesitate to return!
Cameron — Google review
The best cocktails made here. Kay behind the bar was amazing such a great gentleman. Very attentive and expert at his craft when making the cocktails. Such attention to detail. Fantastic time Saturday. 😊🍹
Tracey T — Google review
If you thought you knew indian food, then think again. This place has all the familiar flavours but delivered in truly unexpected way. To add to this, especially the starters, Babuls has taken taste to a whole new level (see photo). Word of warning! Don't go mad and order loads as portions are generous. The ordering system on the tablet is easy and everything arrived super quick. Our cocktails were delivered within minutes. Above all this was a fantastic atmosphere. Tge place had a real buzz about it. Friendly, inviting and fun. Definitely going back next time we visit or pass through Barnard Castle.

Amazing place, it’s free entry and there is parking on site which is £2 but goes To English Heritage to help maintain the abbey. So close to Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum. Fabulous for a picnic or a quick visit.

Beautiful, peaceful place. Stunning ruins. Informative plaques dotted around. Slight confusion about parking fee. One sign said Free Parking, another said £2 but could only pay by text message. Would benefit from an honesty box as an option for those who aren't tech savvy.

Impressive tall stone arches, great stone features meet you as you pull into the carpark.. lovely ruins worth the short trip from Barnard Castle.. grass area to sit and relax.. we walked through the fields at the side to the stream, looking back you realize just how big the monastery must of been.. plaques are dotted around giving good information....dogs welcome but must be on a lead... carpark is txt donation.. Eggleston Abbey is with English Heritage. It is free to enter, but non members a charge of £2 to park. The Abbey ruins itself is set in beautiful scenery. Dates back to the 1100s . There are still physical parts of the Abbey that presented once was. Totally recommend for peace and relaxation. My 20 year old son enjoyed the Abbey. No facilities or toilets. 1 mile half miles away from Barnard Castle Town.

Discovered this place by chance on a random detour, stopped off to have a look unsure about parking one sign saying free one saying text to pay. A few informative plaques situated around the site and the boundry of the where the walls would of been is clearly marked which was a nice touch and it still retains quite a lot of features.

A beautiful and peaceful historic site — well worth the £2 parking fee! It’s great to see a place like this that doesn’t overcharge visitors just to enjoy the scenery. Compared to Whitby Abbey, which isn’t much larger but costs £16 to enter, Egglestone Abbey feels refreshingly honest and accessible. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Interesting place to walk to from Barnard Castle. We enjoyed a lovely walk across fields and back along Teesdale Way.

What a beautiful surprise! This is a little, cute and cozy cafe you can stop by for a comforting breakfast or brunch. The staff was very welcoming and always kind, despite being super busy, and you have a wide range of vegan foods that are not so basic and actually well-thought. They have vegan sausage rolls made from real veggie stuffing, not the store-bought meat replacements you would usually get. The raspberry and white chocolate vegan cheesecake is absolutely delicious. You can tell they really care at creating something tasty for different dietary styles. Every time we’re in the area we’ll stop here for some food.

Why have I not been in here before! Lovely staff, friendly atmosphere and importantly........very nice food and coffee. The seating area downstairs is very old and contains and old cast iron range, which enhances the atmosphere. Love it - we'll be back soon.

Friendly service and a good selection of light dishes, including vegan and gluten-free options. We sat downstairs in the basement room which was atmospheric and included a nice little play den in one corner for the kids. If I'm completely honest, it did smell a little musty down there though, particularly in the rear room. The food was however very good value and tasty.

Barnard Castle Fisheries is a hidden gem that offers delicious fish and chips. The large, perfectly cooked pieces of cod with crisp batter and generous portions of chips drenched in salt and vinegar are highly recommended. The curry sauce is particularly outstanding, adding depth to the meal. Customers also praise the mushy peas and friendly staff. This spot is definitely worth a visit for its fantastic food and welcoming atmosphere.
Always when visiting Barnard Castle, I come here for the tastiest fish and chips. Now with 2 customer tables with chairs outside, I was able to enjoy my cod and chips and watch daily life go by on the main street of this lovely market town. The staff are absolute stars and thank you for your hospitality.

I had fish and chips for lunch and a can of diet coke costing £11.40 Nice size piece of fish, and enjoyed. The chips slightly crisp on the outside & nice in the middle. I was first in for lunch! Great service!

Was walking past & thomas complemented my dachshunds before offering us a free sausage. It smelled so good , we’ve already planned to come for our own dinners tomorrow. Overall friendly people & great food offerings at affordable prices.
Jordan — Google review
I'd been so looking forward to fish and chips it was twice as disappointing when I tried them. The fish was over cooked but edible. The chips however had been reheated and served. They were hard, chewy and tasteless. I couldn't eat them. The girls that served me were really nice but unfortunately good customer service doesn't make up for inedible substandard food. I drove 5 miles to a picnic stop to eat them otherwise I would most definitely have taken them back.
Annie F — Google review
I enjoyed the fish & chips but the batter on the fish was a little bit greasy and soggy. The chips were fine as was the fish itself.i had cod as there was no haddock available so the only let down really was the batter.i'd definitely go back here and when I do I just hope the batter might be nice and crispy.

Well what a find! Outstanding food, cracking service at the table. Fresh made food, tasting like it was made by hand by humans. The guys that run this joint know what they are doing, management are clearly on point. It was party night tonight but was no big delays service was better than most quiet establishments, there appeared to be 3 waiting staff and two guys In the public kitchen. Just wish it was a load closer to where we live as would be there at least monthly. Well done 👍

Wish we had found this place on the first day of our holiday!! House wine was exceptional. I had a beautifully fresh classic bruchetta and my partner had the garlic mushroom starter, which he said was delicious. We shared a vegetarian pizza; I LOVED the olives, very generous too! We couldn't resist the homemade in-house tiramisu. Tiramisu is my absolute fave dessert, and I can gladly say that Capri tiramisu was the best I have ever had! Waitress service was first class, all were attentive and assertive to our needs. Very polite and welcoming. I HIGHLY recommend visiting. You will NOT be disappointed 😍

Bowlees Visitor Centre is a convenient stop for visitors exploring Low Force and High Force. The small tourist information area offers helpful staff and a nice exhibition. The on-site cafe provides tasty treats at reasonable prices, while the parking operates on a donation basis. With family and dog-friendly walks, it's an ideal spot for a day out in nature. Just remember to follow the country code and take your rubbish home after enjoying a lovely picnic at this charming location.
Best place to park, then walk past Low Force up to High Force, on the Pennine way on the south bank of the river. Path reasonable, but not for wheelchairs I am afraid. 4 mile round trip good views to be had all round

Popped in on a walk from Middleton in Teesdale to Low Force. What an unexpected find too. Lovely visitors centre with local artists prints for sale, maps of the area etc for sale. Just had an ice cream and potter in the shop but will return. I expect the cafe is cosy in the winter months with huge log burning stove on. Low Force a short walk away. The area is absolutely stunning for walking, cycling etc.

The car park is handy and the paths are easy to follow, making it great for families. Inside the visitor centre the cakes and coffee are amazing, and there’s always a warm welcome. It’s one of our favourite spots in Teesdale to begin an adventure or just stop for a relaxing break surrounded by nature.

We have been here several times as a starting place for walking. The parking is very reasonable, asking for a donation. The visitors centre has lots of nicely presented boards about the local area, its wildlife, geology and farming. There are lots of maps and walking books too. The cafe has a simple selection of good food, we enjoyed the soup today and the staff are friendly and helpful. The paths we have tried have been well signposted and there are walks of varying lengths and some spectacular waterfalls.

Lovely place for a break.. we parked here for our walk to low & high force.. donation parking, plenty of space when we arrived, but on our return mid afternoon was a bit busier... Cafe, toilets, seating and picnic areas.. designated walk board, with looped routes to high force and surrounding area.. great starting point for the river side walk to both falls..

Lovely walk down to low force waterfall, very scenic and not too far to get to from car park. Good, friendly service and lovely food in the cafe which was worth the money, home made chips were great and the hot chocolate very good ☺️

Eggleston Hall Gardens is a year-round public attraction featuring landscaped gardens, a cafe, and a gift shop open from March to Christmas. The surrounding area offers various dining options, including Indian, Chinese, and Italian takeaways as well as cafes and restaurants. The garden center within the beautiful walled garden is well-stocked with healthy plants and trees. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque surroundings with a little stream running through the area and an abundance of beautiful birds at the bird feeders.
A fabulous nursery & walled garden with plenty of plants on offer and admire. The gardening team work hard to cultivate and grow many varieties of flowers & plants. There’s a great selection of hostas and we purchased a blue leaf one, can’t remember the name! The leaves looked very strong & healthy! It’s dog friendly and you put a donation of £2.50pp into the wooden box upon entry! There’s an old church and graveyard to explore too!

Quaint place to visit hidden down a little track off a c class road. The cafe was very nice and the portions sizes were off the scale. The cheese scone was beautiful and had some paprika or similar in it . The butter was very good quality. The cake was a raspberry crumble cake and was enough to feed two . The secret garden at the back has an honesty box at the beginning. A small nursery next to this allows you to purchase plants at a good price. Will go back .

Beautiful mature gardens to see before you wander around the nursery full of very healthy plants. A separate cafe on site too but we didn't stop for tea.

Great garden and nursery. Lovely studio selling the most beautiful tissue art creations. The tearoom there was brilliant. We had scones with cream and jam and cut up fruit. All the meals coming out looked delicious. Well worth a visit.

Quirky little garden centre with lovely beds. Plants for sale all looked healthy and well cared for, if we lived closer we would be regulars.

Lovely little garden ,old ruined church and graveyard, peaceful and quiet, if you love wild birds this place attracts dozens of them, the cafe is is great value, lovely food, friendly staff.Do go and visit.

This is such a a lovely place, has a great selection of plants. Also has a cafe for a coffee and snack. Also has an antique shop there. Unfortunately the antique shop wasn't open at the time I was there so couldn't have a browse. For a very small fee of 2.50 you can walk around the grounds which I think is a very fair price and all helps towards the upkeep. Well worth a visit.

Amazing! Beautiful nursery full of gorgeous plants to purchase, and stunning grounds to walk round. The cafe/tea room is is a nice stop off to unwind. A definite must-visit!

Barnard Castle Golf Club

Golf club
Barnard Castle Golf Club offers a par 73 course with natural hazards like streams and ponds, providing a scenic view of woods and farmland. Visitors can enjoy the course for a daily fee starting at 27, with buggy rentals available. The club welcomes visitors who are members of recognized golf clubs or societies with a current handicap. While the lack of signage and warnings about hazards is noted, the well-maintained course is considered an interesting challenge.
A great parkland course in very good condition - tees, fairways and greens. A relatively flat course making use of streams, contours, mature trees and dogleg holes. Everyone I met were very pleasant.
Andy 6 — Google review
Been a member here for just over a year now. A lovely parkland setting with lots of nature all around. Deceptively testy course with water crossing most holes so makes you think, lay up vs carry the water to the green. We have a great Pro and a super cook and bar staff. You’re sure of a warm welcome here at the club. The members are so friendly.
Hammo19 — Google review
Beautiful course, testing but satisfying. The views are second to none, the odd deer will pay a visit plus hares and pheasants. Good bar in the club house and a pub just up the road. A friendly and beautiful course. Highly recommended.

"one of the best courses" my sons said when they came off the course! The staff were really friendly too and the food in the club house was lovely. Many thanks

Thoroughly enjoyed. Really well laid out course. Have to plot your way around. Greens weren't the best but played well. Very friendly golf pro whom advised us of condition of the course this did not dampen our experience. Would highly recommend playing, a bit of a hidden gem.

One of those somewhat hidden gems located deep in South West Durham and close to tourist attractions such as High Force & Raby Castle. The well maintained golf course is a great yet fair test with lovely views. Off course, the clubhouse is fantastic too - especially the food! Visit soon I suggest.

Antiques and collectables, this is the place to visit. Could easily spend an hour browsing! Bought 2 japanese wood block prints by UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI. 1798 to 1861. Got a little bit of discount at the till. Top bloke 😉👍

The Mission Hall Antique Center is a very well laid out array of antiques, it has items to suit many pockets. There's plenty of space to peruse the differing items on offer. It was nice to be able to wander around without being pressured into a sale. We will certainly return when time permits a longer stay.

Teesdale Barnard Castle Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, provided by the Motorhome and Caravan Club, offers excellent clean facilities and spacious pitches. The friendly staff provides excellent service, making for a lovely stay. The site is conveniently located near Barnard Castle town center with easy access to transportation. Although some noise from the nearby road can be heard on certain pitches, the campsite offers well-maintained facilities and pleasant walks in the surrounding area.
Lovely clean and well run campsite. The pitches are big and not too close together. Easy walk into Barnard Castle although it is partly on the road. The is a request bus that stops outside the site which is very handy. All facilities are spotless and everything you need. It might be very busy in the summer, but very quiet and peaceful when we were there. Definitely going back.
Diana D — Google review
It was good as a base to visit wonderful Teesdale but the site itself was rather noisy even on our pitch well away from the B road. Many pitches were rather more tightly spaced than on many other Caravan Club sites which was disappointing but it was great to be able to walk through the adjoining nature reserve area into the town fairly easily. Of course as usual very well maintained site with all expected facilities.
Michael P — Google review
Very nice site. Toilet block clean and shower/ room to move about and get changed. The site itself is clean and well looked after. Bit of a walk down a steep bank to Barnard Castle so if less able may need taxi or other form of transport. Booking in and out smooth no hassle and plots are spaced out.
Time O — Google review
Lively campsite with immaculate facilities! Site wardens extremely helpful and had time to chat if you wanted. They waited for us arriving late after being stuck in traffic. Great stop of travelling with young kids with the private family room with small bath which was very useful! Thank you!
Iain M — Google review
We had a warm welcome to the campsite. The toilets were clean and warm. I fail to understand why the site has been given low marks due to road noise, it's not that noticeable. It's like giving a low score due to bad weather! Nice site, nice location & lovely staff can't ask for more.
Judith F — Google review
Lovely campsite. Spacious pitches. Immaculate facilities. Helpful wardens! Dog friendly. Lovely playground for older children, age 5 onwards, although plenty of space to run about on the bouncy friendly surface. Easy walk into Barnard Castle along the river. Lots of shops, castle, coffee shops etc. Near Raby Castle and High Force waterfall. What's not to like! Will be re visiting. What's not
Alli B — Google review
Great Caravan & Motorhome members' site just outside Barnard Castle. Spotlessly clean, tidy and has helpful staff. Just a short walk into town (mostly off-road), takes about 15-20 minutes. Small dog walk on site. One gripe - the timer controlling the lights off in the gents toilet area is set unrealistically short (you can get a wash but it's likely to turn off before you can clean your teeth)... God forbid if you were sitting on the loo!
David R — Google review
This campsite is clean and tidy but pick your pitch carefully because some are very close to the road. The road noise quietens as it gets later but it doesn't stop. Site very close to some very pretty places.

Wetheriggs Animal Rescue is a hidden gem that truly captures the heart of animal lovers. This wonderful center, discovered by chance while seeking help for a bird, has become a favorite destination for many visitors. The dedicated staff, particularly Terry, showcases an incredible passion for rehabilitating animals in need. Each creature at Wetheriggs appears happy and well-cared-for despite their past challenges. Visitors have the unique opportunity to interact with the animals up close and even feed them!
Had an amazing visit to this absolute gem of a place today. Just wonderful to see the dedication of the staff doing all they can for so many animals in need. Friendly, helpful and a delight to wander round. Cannot recommend this place enough. Wish we lived nearer as both my kids would be volunteering in a shot. Thanks so much for a great experience.

Kids loved it here £25 for 2 adults and 4 kids wasn't bad value at all as you can come back throughout the day. We arrived at 3pm so only had an hour but we were very welcomed by the staff and nothing was too much trouble. We will be back
Zoe S — Google review
We love this place!! We have just recently become members due to our continuing visits. We found the center completely by accident when we had a bird in need of some help. Terry who cares for the animals and helps with their rehabilitation is a wonderful human being! He has such passion for all of the animals and it shines through completely. The animals in their care all look happy and healthy, despite any ailments or illnesses they have come in with. You can get up close and feed the animals. Have a wonder around their paddocks. A great day or afternoon out. With or without children :)

I feel bad giving only 2 stars. I really do. I'm sure its a great charity doing fantastic work, however the place is needing a good clean. The smell of urine as you walk in the entrance will knock you off your feet. I get if you have goats, pigs and rodents under on roof there will be a smell but this was bad. I felt as though I was walking around a prison block for animals. Some areas were really cramped. I'm sure its better than where they came from and safer. I know you work tirelessly but please clean the enclosures to a higher standard.
Grahame L — Google review
£20 for a family ticket for 2 adults and upto 4 children. We were a little disappointed to be honest we were in and out in 20 mins. It's one large shed with lots of pens with the animals in. You could buy feed for a pound per bag to feed the animals which we did. We thought 20 pound for a family ticket was steep for what w as there but you have to think they are looking after all the rescued animals and that eases the blow. We thought £10 a family ticket was more suitable really. Animals and staff were friendly but wouldn't visit again.
Gareth H — Google review
Lovely friendly place, well cared for animals, great volunteers, building looks a bit tired but still an enjoyable couple of hours. Save some food for the paddock animals outside. Thanks,

Adopted 3 rescue chickens from here.. beautiful birds! The animal centre does need a bit of a clean as some pens were a bit dirty and quail eggs scattered everywhere also a broken roof where little birds were nesting and budgies but other than that everything was great loved it! Especially the curly haired pig.. loved her to bits. Shame I don't have the space else I would've took her home 🤣

It was the only place open for evening meals on a Sunday in Barnard Castle. The proprietor was very welcoming and helpful and the meal was lovely. Nice setting with sheltered outdoor seating. Good range of craft beers and drinks. Family friendly too.

I'm not really sure how to leave this review. We stayed for 1 night in a first floor room. Photos were taken and to say this was the dirtiest room and hall I have ever seen would be an understatement The bathroom was disgusting and our friends in another room didn't shower it was thst bad. There were hairs in rhe shower. Rust on the walls. The beds were 2 x single slay beds. Where the blood rushed to your head as the head was lower than the foot which is due to floor levels. The levels aren't their fault but do something. It was disgusting and if you have anything about you , don't book As a result we cancelled our evening meal and didn't go to breakfast as there is no way these have standards. As we arrived in the pub it's a pub and looked ok. It was grotty but the reviews on here must be bullshit as they are not honest. The owners need to stay in their own rooms or listen to customers. We didn't ask for money back just left. Shocking in the worst way possible. It was like a room from the 1960's which was last cleaned in the 1960s. On a positive note the mattress was comfortable and clean and so were the sheets. But everything else was disgusting. I wouldn't stay here even in prep for my own funeral.

Food was not very good we stopped for a Sunday roast, it wasn't very nice. Burnt yorkshire pudding weird sauce around beef almost like watery Greece, roast potatoes rock hard, hard under cooked frozen carrots, bit of broccoli that was ok and a few Peas, mash was probably the best part. Really disappointed 😞

What a lovely local pub / restaurant. Staff are so friendly and lovely to speak to. Food..... well what can I say, it was absolutely amazing. I had the sirloin stake and was cooked to perfection. And to top it off I also got proper English mustard. Everything was like home cooked food. We will be back again

I booked 2 rooms to attend a family party close by. I was so disappointed with the accommodation, the carpets on the stairs and in the rooms are so dirty, the room had cobwebs with spiders , the walls needed painting, the bathroom flooring was ripped the bath was dirty, there was a shower attachment on the taps a shower pole on the wall, no screen or curtain. The chair at the desk/ dressing table was to high you couldn't sit on it and get your legs under the desk/ dressing table. The other room the tv didn't work and the lock on the door has loose screws and on was actually on the floor. The 2 rooms cost £203.00, I think this is expensive for this standard, the bedding and towels where clean and the breakfast was very good. Think very carefully before you book to stay here.
Jane H — Google review
Very disappointing. Like travelling back in time. Room very small and dated. Urgently needs a revamp. Gluggy brown chipped paint everywhere. Bed OK and sheets and towels crisp and clean. That is all that can be commended. Public areas shabby. Stained carpets. I was there on a Sunday evening. No food (kitchen closed at 1600) and bar closed at 1900. No other restaurants in the area unless you have a car. Very average continental breakfast with powdered coffee. There are plenty of alternatives in the area. Use them. I see most of the reviews say that stayed in the caravan park. Lucky them. *** rated hotel! Not even a chance. Time for an inspector to visit and re-rate.
Steve B — Google review
Popped in for lunch on our way into town. Pub looks welcoming from the outside and it was comfortable sitting in the bar area inside. Staff were helpful. The chips and coffee were nice but the vegetable soup was very disappointing - a small portion which looked and tasted like it was out of a tin, and the bread rolls were still frozen inside. The menu stated that many meals were homemade so we expected that this would be the case for the soup too - I certainly haven't had anything this bad when eating out before. Sadly it's put us off going back to what otherwise could be a nice pub.
Dr S — Google review
We went in the pub for a light lunch. A Rose prawn sandwich, a side salad with crisps, I had the same but a toasted mozzarella and cheese toastie. A pint of shandy and a small coke cost £15.25 which was very reasonable. Just we had to wait 40 minutes for the sandwiches. There is another lunchtime menu that I haven't posted of sandwiches, and jacket potatoes. On the main meals only had 1 vegetarian dish, all with meat. Needs to give more options for vegetarians as I was very limited. The bar maid was polite & had excellent customer service. Has a large car park. Wheelchair friendly. Has an outdoor seating area and is dog friendly.

Warm welcoming, staff were really nice and accommodating. I was attending a wedding and a nearby Venue, and we're on top of the situation. Breakfast is Amazing! I was so proud of myself for making it to have breakfast 😂 Definitely 5* "All day Long"!

Having to give a mixed review as there's good and bad. I was booked into the Red Well Inn by my company so I had no say in this. The hotel is tired, not enough staff to keep the standards up. I was in a single room which was quite small and the ensuite was minute. Very tired looking with the desk chair broken. Mattress needs changing as its misshapen. Evening meals were good with plenty of choice and competitively priced. Different beers and spirits. Breakfast.....hmmmm, says on the website an English Breakfast. None here as it was a limited continental breakfast. Basically left to your own devices as the first morning the guy Sat in reception. Next morning was better with a different guy who was helpful and friendly. This hotel could be better and attract more clientele if the place was "tarted up".

Stayed recently for 2 nights for a wedding in the area. Staff very friendly and helpful, managed to get our room early. Stayed in a standard room which was lovely and clean. Comfy bed and huge bathroom. Tea/coffee making facilities and iron provided. Good breakfast choice. Ate here on the 1st night, food was really good and reasonably priced. Only downside was noise from outside the pub until after closing (couldn't hear the pub itself), but that wouldn't deter me from returning, as I know which rooms to avoid. 100% recommend 👌

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Barnard Castle . We would highly recommend The Three Horseshoes for great rooms , great food and great service . Room 1 is a large room at the front of the hotel looking out over the main street. Plenty of hot water and a good shower . Only let down was the WiFi in the room was poor but was fine in the bar . We would definitely stay again .

Good pub in the centre of Barnard Castle. Friendly staff. Hadn't booked (recommended) but they managed to serve me a Sunday roast as long as I didn't stay too long. Food arrived promptly. For £14.95 the roast beef, veg etc was magnificent. No wonder all the tables had either people eating already or reserved signs. Good value great food.

Called in after a stroll around Barnard Castle. Hadn't booked but we were lucky enough to get a table. So glad we chose to eat here! The food was first class...so tasty and of good quality. I had the lamb rump which was cooked to perfection. Desserts were great too! All presented nicely. Lovely staff. Good atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area. We will return when we're up here again.

We were here last weekend, lovely pub, friendly staff and as we were eating, 3 of us had mains and desserts. We had our dogs and despite advertising dog friendly, that means you sit outside. We didn't mind as the weather was lovely but the two men on the next table proceeded to smoke none stop throughout our meal which floated in our direction. We had our main courses and they looked as though they were about to leave so we ordered dessert but they sat back down and started to smoke again. It is not a pleasant experience, eating while in a cloud of smoke and none of us smoke so we don't appreciate breathing in other's. You should have a dedicated eating area for smokers away from diners.

(Update 28 Aug 2025, over night stay) Popped in for a Sunday roast. I'm glad we did; it was fantastic! Just booked a room for the back end of August so we can stroll around Barnard Castle and enjoy more meals at Three Horseshoes. Hope the room will be good. Extended review pending. Our stay for one night was excellent, room was immaculate, all amenities was available in the room, bed was huge and comfortable. Had a good night sleep considering our room was at the front were people sit and have a drink and it was also a bank holiday weekend. Breakgast was excellent too! Thank you to the staff for helping us have a lovely weekend! Special thank you to Sarah who seemed to be popping up and helping here and there and everywhere! 😆😀

Only ate here as we were staying elsewhere in Barnard Castle. Lovely food, very varied menu and the staff are really friendly and helpful. It is busy and it deserves to be. Highly recommended.
