Kalmar Castle, situated in the city of Kalmar in Sweden's Smaland province, is a captivating historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into its 800-year history. This Renaissance fortress boasts fairy-tale turrets, a drawbridge, and even a foul dungeon with secret passages. The castle played a pivotal role in Scandinavian politics, notably during the formation of the Kalmar Union in 1397. Guided tours are available to help visitors appreciate the significance of this magnificent relic.
There are so many things to see and learn inside the castle, it is probably one of the main tourist site you HAVE to visit while in Sweden, at least if you are fond of history and architecture. You could spend the whole day inside and never feel tired.
The castle' state of conservation is truly remarkable and the depiction of life in the middle age/renaissance is astounding. It is obvious the staff worked overtime to provide such a level of precision. Don't forget to look up for the ceilings, they are beautiful.
I visited the castle during the Häxor exhibit and it was both immersive and moving, even for a foreigner, I can't even comprehend the amount of work that was needed to create such a masterpiece, even the poster is a work of art. I don't know who directed it but they are very talented.
When you're done visiting, climb up the walls and enjoy the view. All in all, I came back with 400 pictures of the castle, that speaks for itself. It is hands down one of the best places in Sweden.

Don't miss the castle if visiting Kalmar! The mummy exhibition is both interesting and fascinating at the same time. Make sure to set aside a half day if you want to go through the castle & mummy exhibition the same day. Comfortable shoes, you will be stepping stones for hours. The park outside the castle is very nice to relax in. You can find rare trees and flowers planted there, each with a little sign of name and year it was planted. Some are very old.
This was our second visit, and we loved it again. They have fun stuff for kids to do, and the castle itself is interesting to explore. The food in the café is good and reasonably priced. The staff all speak English and many seemed to speak German as well (and Swedish, obviously).
Beautiful castle but no way worth the entrance fee. Perhaps if you want the 'included' guided tour or you have small kids to take on the challenges, or you really want to see a random Egyptian exhibition it might be worth the money, but if you want a self guided tour and learn about the history of the castle yourself it's not worth the fee. Recommendation - charge a more reasonable base entrance fee then people extra if they want a guided tour or to enter the Egyptian exhibition.

- Even though it is largely reconstructed, its exteriors are a view.
- Their guided tours are nice, even if not the best.
- Kids can enjoy at least for 3-4h, so it is a plus.
Lacked:
- A comprehensive timeline chart like the one in Borgholm slot.
- A clear and chronological understanding of the exhibition of Kalmar slott history.
The castle was really fascinating. The souvenir shop was also very interesting but a bit pricey.
Recommend visiting!

So so castle as European castles go. Probably interesting for kids, but the “restored” rooms were nothing spectacular. It took less than an hour to see it all.

A quick travel in time to see how Kalmar's nobility lived in the 18th centery. A lovely little garden with a little Caffè where one can buy some typical Swedish pastries and sandwiches. One can also enjoy a picknick on the soft grass. The place is well taken care of. The lavatories where clean. There is a nice little exhibition of how people used to live there (what is on regular display are the servants area). One should check the dates as at special occasions tours of the inside of the house are offered.
Really cosy place for coffee and cookies outside. Maybe not the best accessability for ppl with disabilities. Pretty good coffee, not the most varied menu (if u want vegan latte, go elsewhere) but like I said damn cosy and calm - bushes between tables and so on.

The center features free Wi-Fi and ample parking areas near all three entrances. Visitors can also enjoy cafes and restaurants within the mall for relaxation after shopping.
This mall is your one stop shop in Kalmar with everything from food to a gym available. It’s newly improved look is quite fancy making it not such an eye sore as before. Good work giraffe team !

Above average range of food, fashion, health and specialist outlets all within the same complex. By far the best family shopping complex in the district.
The Giraffe Shopping centre has recently undergone a big renovation. This has proved very successful, with the concept clearly made for shopping comfort and convenience. There are three excellent parking areas, adjacent to all three entrances. Well kept toilets in convenient places. Fika is plentiful and there are also two large luncheon buffet restaurants on very good standards and prices.
I congratulate the architects and planners, but also the current management for keeping the customer in first place.
Good sized shopping centre with plenty of car parking. You'll have no trouble parking car and caravan or large mobile home.
The centre and it's close proximity will provide a fuel stop, mobile phone providers, groceries, cafes, clothing shops, alcohol shop and a hobby shop.
Great one stop shop for The Tourist to fulfill all your needs in Kalmar.

The prices include the guide,but you need to pick up your self in the castle.The guide put on special traditional clothes as the picture shows. You vill learn a lot of things from the guide . You can not read every thing in the halv day. It was nice to hear from them.

A small little mall with a fair selection of clothing, electronic, cafe, gym, restaurants, fast food joints, and grocery stores. The location is very convenient as it's close to the train station. The mall has a couple of free toilets and paid parking spots.

Coop has many great products and nice discounts. The staff is nice and helpful and it's easy to find all products. The parking is large and free and Coop bought recently Netto in Sweden so it is most probably in top 3 in Sweden. Yes I recommend Coop.
The location is excaptionally good. Easy to find with lovely views, however I feel the place is a missed potential. It's small, with only a few stores, not much to choose from. If you need something quickly then it's fine, but if you're looking to spend a few hours browsing and looking around then this place is just too small.

Grew up in this town and a lot has changed at Baronen. Was always a nice place to go. Now a lot of new stores though, but not necessarily a bad thing. Usually a nice selection of stores and a nice calm atmosphere, but currently a lot of changes.

The sushi is a bit up and down in quality unfortunately, but when they get it right it's really good.
Avoid rush hour and you will usually be fine I would say. Sometimes it helps to order in advance it feels like the have the option to put some more time in it then but might just be a coincidence.
Usually don't do mayo on sushi but theirs is great, a bit small but good.
Had to ask for eating sticks, and there's no napkins either so that could improve.
Sitting there isn't great tho, it's really small so for 2 ppl it works fine, when you are more it becomes a little tight.

I had a delightful dining experience at Bryggan. The meal was highly enjoyable, with delectable and flavorsome dishes. The chai latte and coffee were outstanding in taste and quality. The restaurant's ambiance was particularly inviting, situated in a charming location overlooking the sea. The pasta offered was exceptionally tasty, boasting excellent flavor and perfectly cooked noodles. I look forward to returning to sample other items on the diverse menu. Despite its limited options, there was something for everyone during our weekend visit.

Did a weekend visit, the menu is quite narrow but we all found something. Have outdoor seating as well.

I went to their lunch buffet in both weekday and weekend before. Both has similar main dishes available. Their weekend lunch buffet has more desserts and fruit choices to choose from, and more sushi and meat variety. I love their milk pudding.

After 6 weeks sailing in Sweden - this was really a highlight tonight !!! The food is excellent, the service better than anywhere we have been in this country, Ernesto is most charming and the inside table we asked for was so close to the bar that they always had an eye on us and our drinks. We highly recommand this restaurant!!!

The calf liver was excellent, very juicy and tasty. But the pizza, wow, it was terrible in my opinion. The price for the liver and the pizza were the same.

The service was good, and the restaurant was in a good area with the interior also being exceptional. The waitress was really nice, I have no complaints about her. Unfortunately, the food was one of the worst things me and my gf have ever eaten. For the price, NO WAY is it worth it. My total ended up being over $100 for a few things. The pasta we ordered (two kinds) were covered in grease and fat. I would not recommend this to anyone. The pasta is in the picture. I don’t remember exactly what it was called, but it had something to do with butter. We didn’t finish any of it.
Restaurant at a good location and with a cozy feel to it. So the potential is there but unfortunately the food was not good. Pasta Carbonara was literally floating in bacon grease and the stuffed chicken fillet was dry and had very little to almost no filling. In addition to ghat it came plated looking like a child did it. Waitress was baffled over us not being happy with the food.
We ordered delicious truffle spaghetti with asparagus. Good choice! 5 stars, but in my opinion everything is overpriced for Swedish province 😌 (270 for pasta)

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Hansa City, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Stensö Camping & Fritid AB. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Beautiful place. Above all, a wonderful view and an interesting environment full of birds that nest here. The only minus I give behind the road that connects the squid and the island of Öland are heard for a great distance, that's why one doesn't enjoy it completely absorbed by nature

The prototypical giant, auto-centric shopping center on the edge of town. Not easy to walk, bike, or bus in this giant complex.
Please shop small and local, and support the downtown shops and restaurants if they offer what you want.

Skälby 4H-gård is a beloved destination in Kalmar, offering a delightful experience for families. The farm features various animals including rabbits, chickens, goats, cows, horses, pigs, and geese. Visitors can enjoy interacting with the animals at the petting area and even leave their bunnies at the rabbit hotel when needed. Families often gather in the spacious park during summer and autumn for activities and barbecues.
This place is so much fun. You get pat goats, sheeps, rabbits and kids get to ride horse for a short walk. Please be respectful to the animals and don't chase them. Also make sure to close the gates securely after. They have a nice cafe and blueberry pie is amazing! I bought their honey too. Great for families with kids. There is a bus that goes near it, and its a 7 minute walk to the place.

Beautiful place for a walk, and a cafe to warm up, drink some hot tea and try Swedish snacks. Very soothing and relaxing to spend time with family and the local animals.
It is one of our favourite places in Kalmar. They have a rabbit hotel where you can leave your bunny in their care if you can't arrange a caretaker in your absence. Send them a mail to enquire about the availability and booking.
There's a petting area where you can pet their rabbits and hamsters. Other than rabbits, they also have chickens, goats, cows, horses, pigs, and geese.
They've a huge park where families gather during summer and autumn to play and eat (BBQ). There's a frisbee ground (discgolfbana) nearby.
Lovely place with typical Swedish farm animals.
Its a great place for families or couples.
Visit it on midsummer eve or "Valborg" when they set up a market and arrange activities.
Super sweet, kind people and they even had vegan, sugar free and gluten free raw balls and a few vegan cakes!:)

Its a very good choice for kids of 3 to 14 years old who would like to enjoy their time with families, friends or classmates. There is a big playground full of balls on spongy floor, its safe to jump and run. Alot of climbing and fun activities. You can orgabise a birthday party for your kid in special room. Tasty quick bites cafe with sweets options. Don't forget to take off your shoes at the entrance, so make sure u wear fresh socks. : )

The reception is friendly and it serves as an ideal base to explore Kalmar and Oland.
Visited the beach very nice quiet place with good and clean toilets, bbq is allowed with places designated for spent a day out really enjoyed it. Highly recommended if you are nearby

There were a lot of people, but we found a nice quiet spot for our tent. We also had a large dog with us. There were plenty of services available. In the evening, it was lovely to walk along the forest trail near the shoreline. The toilets didn’t work well with the card. The toilets and showers were clean.
If you like a noisy camping, choose this camping! Staff told me to send an email to manager, see below, never got an answer. Do not go to this camping.
We have just stayed our first night of three booked nights at your camping site Stenso near Kalmar, but we want to leave already and would like a refund for the two coming nights we will not use. We had a very bad experience, there was so much noise it kept us awake till three in the night. It was all kind of noise: people throwing glass in the bin, people talking very loud, laughing out loud, loud music. It was not just one family we could go to; it appeared to us that on this camping it seems normal not respect each other and your other campers and just think of your own pleasure. Because this is not what to expect from a campingsite (it was the first time it happened to me in this way), it seems apparant to refund the money for the coming two nights, for we did not get what you could expect from a camping in our opinion.
Friendly staff, perfect location (close to the city, small forest en beaches on walking distance) and the best showers and toilet building (the one down the hill) I have had so far during the camping visits in Sweden. The only downside was the price at around 370 SEK for 1 person with a tent and bike.
Around service house number 2 there was a lot of spacious parkings for mobil homes, all of them in a lovely forest of big old trees. The service house was well equipped, and showers included in the price. But there were only 2 washing machines for all guests, really disappointing and lower the scores. Many other details were sloppily managed.
Nice camping with many shadow pitches for tents, some picknicktables and friendly reception👌🏼 Perfect base to explore Kalmar and Öland. We were closest to Servicehus 2 but it was not so good, muddy, moldy and smelly old showers. Kitchen was fine. Other service areas are better, there’s one shiny new one (4 I think) worth the extra steps to it!

We ordered different dishes, the meat especially the chicken and the lamb are really nice and well grilled and extremely tender. Highly recommend the dishes here and not salty like most grill places. Highly recommend the restaurant. It’s probably one of the best halal restaurants in these parts of Sweden. I would only recommend that they improve in cleanliness especially keeping the toilets clean and the sinks area. Otherwise highly recommend the restaurant especially if on a long drive!!!!!
I was surprised by the quality and taste of food. Soft and juicy lamb stek and chicken kebab. Good place to stop over on a trip to Öland. I must say I had to stop over again on a return trip from Öland!

Housed in an elegant modern building, the museum showcases contemporary artworks and intriguing exhibits by renowned artists. Managed by Kalmar Municipality in collaboration with various partners, including municipalities and educational institutions, the museum offers an immersive experience.

All in all, this museum is really recommended for history lovers.
We greatly enjoyed this museum. There were only three major exhibits but each told a story from Swedish history very well. I found it a relief not to feel I needed rush to see a dozen other things. Good English audio guide and enough English labels. If you have children/grandchildren they’ll be well catered for too.
Mostly an exhibit about a sunken war, and the recovery of 30,000 artifacts from the ship. I thought there might be more history about the city of Colmar. What was there, though, was well done.
An absolute surprise!
I’d heard that the museum was quite good, but we were really impressed, especially with the level of detailed and how the storyline and artifacts were displayed in the Kronan man of war ship exhibit.
We also were mesmerized by the information on the Iron Age ring forts and the massacre at Sandy Borge.

Unfortunately, like a lot of historical sites in this part of Sweden, this museum just felt like it was lacking a lot. I thought the entrance fee was really pricey for the experience itself. There was very little history about the town and region of Kalmar, the only artefacts being based purely on a single shipwreck from the 17th century. Most of the museum felt catered towards young children, though I doubt most young children have much of an interest for this kind of history. Layout was kind of confusing and difficult to follow. It wasn’t terrible, but I would not recommend it, save your money.

A very nice place for sports recreation, walking, running, there is also a basketball court, a volleyball court, a ramp. nearby is a large jump directly into the sea, I think it is about 10 meters high. Place is usually bussy full of athletes so it is not suitable for camping. otherwise a nice neighborhood for the fact that it's basically a few minutes from the center.

I'm from the southwestern U.S., and I know tacos! These were really, really good. And the margarita was superb. Shaken, not on the rocks! Well balanced, and pleasingly frothy. The only downside was the stale, Tostito (?) chips, and no house-made refried beans. Those are two key elements that would have made this place perfect.

Recently opened and trendy new Mexican restaurant. Paid about 120kr for four "grande" soft tacos with chips and guacamole. My friend got the mix plate that includes a hard taco and an enchilada for around 90kr. The enchilada was really good! There's a salad bar as well. Great place to get your Mexican food craving filled.

We looked for a friendly and easygoing environment for my mom's birthday (just me and her for dinner) and we could not have picked a better place.
Food was fenomenal, and the service was exceptional. We ordered one of the 3 cours menues and added some extras on top of it, and the meats were increadibly tasty, cooked raw (as we asked) and the sauces were lovely.
Mark (half Swedish half Italian) helped us throughout and spent lots of time chatting with us. We loved it all, and the experience was the best we could have hoped for. Thank you for making my mom's birthday so lovely!

I was also very uncomfortable watching the owner drag a waitress around by her wrist. All in all a very poor experience.
It was special eating with old friends we hardly ever see so we went expecting to have a good evening, but friendly and attentive service, a relaxed and welcoming environment and, not least, delicious food - especially recommend the hot platter scampi - and very reasonable prices made it an evening to remember.

My partner and I are vegan, and this might have been the nicest experience I’ve had eating at a restaurant that’s not exclusively vegan. The choice is much larger than I would normally expect from this type of higher end restaurant. You can tell that the people working there have thought about the customer experience, it was really pleasant.
The food was so tasty too! I’m normally a fast eater but I tried to eat as slow as I could to really savour it.
It's very cosy and welcoming to be a basement. Got attention and was taken cared of directly inside the door. It's an atmosphere of "homemade" here. Even the hamburger and hamburger bred is baked locally.
For it's price this place is considering to deliver great quality food with serviceminded personnel.
I’ve dined at over 900 restaurants in my life, and this absolute disaster of a place ranks firmly in the bottom three. Shocking. The food? Bland, soggy, clearly frozen – and then microwaved into oblivion. I waited nearly an hour before having to ask for my starter, which arrived stone cold. My wine? Warmer than a bloody teapot. Room temperature would’ve been a luxury.
How this place has a 4.4 out of 5 rating is beyond me – it’s absurd. I’m genuinely appalled. I still felt sick the day after, just thinking about what they served.
And don’t get me started on the ‘crisps’ with red onion and bacon crème – what in God’s name was that? It looked like it was slapped together by a toddler. Soft, lifeless, and absolutely vile.
Disgusting from start to finish. If this is anyone’s idea of a five-star restaurant, I fear for their taste buds. Save yourself the trauma – avoid at all costs.
A perfect experience from the beginning until the end. 5-star service, really nice atmosphere and the food was truly amazing, congratulations to all the team specially in the kitchen! We will be back for sure. The oxfilé and the hallonkaka were delicious.

Tastefully decorated restaurant located in an old cellar. They serve basic but perfectly cooked food made from local and homemade products. (We haven't used the following options, but they even offer a vegetarian alternative for every headcourse, and they have a kids menu)
They also offer various brands of whiskey, for the enthusiasts.
Friendly and informal service with a smile. All together an excellent price/quality ratio. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

In the summer, it's open every day while in winter it opens for dinner a few evenings each week. The venue also hosts diverse concerts from Blues and Jazz to Pop, Indie, Rock and Standup.
I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so because I was so positively impressed. We were promptly seated at a free table. The service was excellent and exceptionally friendly. The negative reviews are difficult to understand. Most complaints were about long wait times, which was not our experience at all. The food was incredibly delicious; it's been a long time since we've enjoyed a meal this much. The prices are in the mid-range, offering excellent value for such superb food.

A World of Dinosaurs is truly something extra! Hidden in a huge barn outside Kalmar city nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see. The number of dinosaurs, and the scale of the exhibition, is truly amazing.
As an adult I'm struck by awe at the sheer size of these dinosaur. And my kids are ecstatic! Dad, look!!! What's that dinosaurs' name? And so on. That is until we enter the area with moving dinosaurs. Then they wanna hold my hand and stay pretty quiet for a while. Being a dad is amazing.
At the end we shop dinosaur souvenirs and toys in the store at great value. This was our forth visit. See you soon again!
The price is very high compared with the level already seen from outside. A lot of replicas marked as “genuine” in the store. We were bit interested what they could offer inside but got scared away as they even charge children with full price, 225kr/person, a family of 4 has to pay 900kr! Don’t understand how they could get such high rate in google…
Very large exhibition with lots of dinosaur fossils, animations, info boards and more. There is also a souvenir shop attached. At the entrance, there are toilets available.
I have to say that I got positive surprised. Living in Småland so I have passed A world of dinosaurs a million times but never stopped and visit. I recommend this aktiviti. And I'm not going to say more. You have to visit it by yourself.
Overpriced, tacky, bizzare. Should have seen it comming, but all the good reviews here clouded my judgement. It's probably the worst dinosaur themed exhibition I've ever been to (and I've seen a lot) and also the worst spend 900SEK (!!!!) of my whole life. Don't get fooled by the reviews, they offer some kind of cheap plastic toy, if you rate them.
Super kitzch tourist trap, greatly overpriced and vastly overrated, but if you have little kids they'll probably love it. He's got a few exemplary fossils, but for the most part it's poorly made replicas, homemade art, and rubber mockups. You are herded thru a twisty path with obnoxious animal(dino) sounds blaring in the speakers. The main room is impressive for showing scale, but the sauropods (as many of the other replicas) aren't even anatomically correct. All in all, a big laugh that we will definitely remember, but not worth the entry price or the two hour drive we took to see it.

A lovely annex to the castle nearby. Especially in the summer, the park is bustling with visitors, walking or just lying around, with the additional opportunity to watch some show or listen to music at the little stage.

The modern look of this art museum is a very interesting addition to Kalmar. We went there during an ongoing renovation so we were only able to see a single exhibit but with a very generous souvenir. Hoping to see it again next time with more exhibits.
There was only one gallery open, so they only charged 20 kroner, but it wasn’t even worth that. The only good thing was I got to use the restroom and found out from the staff that parking is free on the street on Sundays.

Bathroom Was Smelly, there was someone’s hair(s) and lots of them; there was a bug on my bed (but it left). The location is nice because it is connected to a burger king and next a mcdonalds and an IKEA And an Asian express plus connected to a mart. Uncomfortable but nice environment.
for the price the experience was terrible. the room didn't have shampoo. it's next to a petrol station so cars are running all night. the breakfast was terrible ( really bad) they had the same bread out for the 3 days we were there. staff were nice though and helped us out.
Restaurant located strategically with ample parking possibilities. The menu offers something for everyone. Prices are acceptable but a little bit on the high end for my taste. Dining area is quite spacious.

My staying, in Rasta Kalmar, was nice also considering the location (really close to a commercial area). The food was good and also the rooms. It's easily reachable from the central station of Kalmar via a bus line.
