Restaurant
Methexis is a picturesque coastal town located on a small peninsula in the southwestern part of Crete, between two bays and along the shores of the Libyan Sea. It has been a popular destination for many years due to its beautiful beaches and pleasant surroundings. The village offers authentic traditional restaurants with fresh ingredients sourced from local producers. Visitors can enjoy a variety of dishes, including grilled meat, casseroles, oven-baked dishes like moussaka, and stuffed vegetables.
Lovely place to have dinner in Paleochora with a beautiful view! The octopus and the dessert were amazing!
Ana L — Google review
Beautiful outdoor patio with a large menu to choose from. They make delicious Greek speciality dishes everyday. Fresh caught fish to choose from and traditional Greek dishes. Beautiful view of the ocean and mountains.
Andrea D — Google review
If you’re looking for an authentic Greek dining experience in Paleochora, this traditional tavern is an absolute gem! Nestled in a beautiful spot with breathtaking views of the Cretan landscape, it offers the perfect mix of atmosphere, flavor, and hospitality. The highlight of our meal was the lamb—tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection.
Kostas B — Google review
Perfect. Everything excellent. Food, service, view. Definitely recommended.
Dimitris S — Google review
Methexis in Palaiochora is an unforgettable spot for authentic Cretan food with a beautiful sea view. We tried the octopus in wine sauce, which was tender and full of flavor, the slow-cooked lamb, and the kleftiko — all perfectly prepared and deeply satisfying. The tsigariasto was another highlight, rich and hearty, and the tirokafteri (htipiti) added the perfect spicy, creamy touch alongside the mains. Generous portions, traditional recipes, and the relaxed seaside atmosphere make this a must-visit when in Palaiochora.
Gabriel D — Google review
We were immediately intrigued to try this place given the stellar Google reviews and we certainly were not disappointed. Came for a casual lunch and were met with warmth and excellent service. Situated right on the coast, you will find yourself both captivated by the view and the food. We all ordered different dishes and tried each other's and every dish was beautiful. I can especially recommend the grilled calamari which was the best fish I had eaten all vacation. A lovely range of delicious coffees too. And then once we had paid, the friendly staff brought us ice cold refreshing watermelon. What a lovely place.
Sam S — Google review
Was recommended this restaurant from someone who had been a lot so were looking forward to it with high expectations. We arrived to a busy evening, got almost the last table. The waiter who came to take our order was so busy having a heated conversation with another waiter whilst we were mid order that he really wasn't listening to us and didnt make us feel welcome at all. This culminated in one of our meals arriving quickly but the other one not arriving until over an hour after we had sat down. We had to remind them we had ordered it and it had obviously not been put through to the kitchen properly. 1 hour 15 minutes later it arrived but one of us finished our meal before the other had even arrived. Our server was totally uninterested in us and at no time did we get an apology. It felt like we were being ignored and the whole service was so disappointing. The grilled meatball and Fries that finally arrived after 1 hr 15 mins was totally underwhelming and not worth waiting for. However the cretan salad was lovely, the vine leaves and stuffed zucchini flowers lovely but the server needs to realise he let everything down so much as he said nothing welcoming to us, no smiles, no friendliness and more importantly no apology for us having to wait so long. Cretan hospitality is amazing but definitely not here.

Restaurant
Caravella Restaurant is a charming eatery located just 300 meters from Paleochora center, offering delightful meals with coastal views. It's the perfect place to unwind after exploring the city. While the prices are on the higher side, especially for fish dishes, their raw sea urchin appetizer and fresh black snapper are standout items. The restaurant is known for its expertise in cooking fish and serves tasty local dishes accompanied by delicious olive oil.
what a fantastic meal at Caravella restaurant our first night here and lobster was amazing. Great service and ambience
Paula K — Google review
Had been recommended by a friend but unfortunately it was a let down (Wednesday 14/8 for dinner). Expected something better from a 7.5 euro per 100gr golden grouper kind of place. Slow service, mistake in the bill, mediocre salad & kaltsounia. Would also change the signage and refresh the whole customer experience approach which is not just providing tablets instead of a hard copy menu (unless we were so unlucky). Pity because the location is nice and it looks popular.
Kostas K — Google review
Great Cretan food! We had the grilled calamari and linguine with mussels in garlic and wine sause. Amazing good dishes! The biggest surprice though was the Mastelo cheese. It is from the Greek island Chios and served with home made marmelade from tomatoes wich the ladyowner of the restaurant picks herselfe and prepare. The best cheese we have had so far!
Siv F — Google review
We found this lovely restaurant last and couldn’t resist visiting it again. We ended up eating there every night. Their quality of food is constant. As good food is a big part of our holiday I can say that this part was perfect.
Erkki T — Google review
Had amazing linguini with shrimps in garlic & wine sauce and grilled dorade. You can select the fish you want from display. The spicy feta cream is amazing too and the staff very friendly.
FOC — Google review
The food was delicious both times we visited. The shrimp saganaki was amazing, and the grilled octopus was also really tasty, though the presentation could have been a bit better—but the flavour made up for it. The giant beans were lovely, and I’d definitely recommend them. The complimentary raki and apple or pear dessert were a nice, refreshing touch. Service wasn’t quite as attentive when we went on the weekend, but to be fair the place was packed. Otherwise, the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be going back.
Lego T — Google review
A restaurant with very nice atmosphere and sea view but the taste of the food wasn’t something special, in contrast with the previous years. First of all,the guy at the front of the restaurant who sit us on the table was not very polite. After that the Greek “fava” had a e very Smokey flavour like something burnt. Also the shrimps on the shrimps pasta hadn’t had their Gastrointestinal tract removed and we had to do it ourselves.. red flag. The waiters were polite , and the kalamari was perfect. They have big variety of different types of wine. And very nice atmosphere.
Trip O — Google review
Unfortunately the food was overcooked and tasteless. A shame for a restaurant specialising in fresh fish and seafood. The staff were very nice, the setting is lovely. Just need to cook the food better!

Castel Selino, also known as Kastelli Selino, has a rich history dating back to 1272 when it was built by a Venetian general. The fortress offers stunning views over the town and sea approaches and is currently undergoing excavation and restoration. Despite the toll exacted by Venetian, Ottoman, and German occupation, visitors can still enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the town below from this historical site.
Great views of Paleochora. The ruins of this cool fort date back to 1279 and was used during Crete’s Venetian and Ottoman years. Photographs from 9 June 2021.
John Q — Google review
Not much to see, but great views over the village and ocean, and a nice place to wander about and have a look at the castle remains. There is a board at the entrance with some historical details which is useful. Definitely worth a visit to the castle if you’re in Paleochora but not worth travelling here to visit the castle alone.
Sue V — Google review
Not a lot to see, but interesting none the less. Views were worth the visit
Sharon T — Google review
Interesting history and fantastic views. Walk past the fort to the edge of the cliff for more views East and West.

There is not much left of this venetian fortress that used to control the trade routes on the southern part of the island. You can still enjoy the view of the sea and the town below

Set above the town the fortress is being excavated/restored, and has views over the town and sea approaches. Venetian, Ottoman, and German occupation exacted a toll on the fortress, but it is worth the climb for the views.

The restaurant aims to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all patrons, with attentive service and delicious dishes prepared by the chef. Visitors can expect fresh and flavorful food, including well-prepared octopus, homemade salads with sweet and sour dressings, Greek salad with Cretan feta, tender meatballs, and zucchini balls.
Excellent restaurant in all ways. Food was fresh and delicious. Lovely laid-back vibe and service great. We came here in low season but the restaurant was still busy at lunchtime. The salad I had was full of lots of different things with a sweet and sour dressing (think vinegar, honey and oil not like sweet/sour dressings from the Uk). Bread was fresh and the courgette balls were perfect. Even the complimentary dessert was tasty and I usually don’t like these. Great place and will be straight back here next time we visit Paleochora.

One of the best restaurants to check out! We had red beet root salad, tzatziki and fried zucchini chips as starters, beef stifaki and pork souflaki with some excellent white house wine. The staff was very friendly and knowledgly answered questions about dishes. The location is very nice. Lots of locals in the restaurants. We had view on u church and the ferry in the harbor. We were there a week ago.We ordered coffee and cakes. The carrot cake was stale, the lemon pie better but not good. They are supposed to be all fresh and daily products as they produce the cakes. But they prefer to serve stale cakes and be defamed than serve the best quality and be famous for that.

Can't gate any better and more authentic than this Greek restaurant, at least for a tourist like me. Super delicious food, staff that makes it happen in a very friendly and fun way. The place was always full but somehow we get a table. Well worth visiting

Very delicious food and quite some vegetarian options. We had the avocado salad, zucchini balls, and something called imam or iman (?) which was eggplant made in the oven all delicious and stuff. Service was great and the guy who took our order quickly picked up on us being vegetarian without us needing to be explicit. Very welcoming place

We were looking for something real, not too touristy and not too flashy, with excellent local food... and we found it right here! Possibly the best taverna of our two-week stay. Friendly service, food packed with flavour, and unpretentious. We went for the gigantes beans, okra and spicy cheese dip. There are lots of other vegetarian/ vegan options too.

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We spent 4.5 days in Paleochora and ate out every meal. We had dinner here on our final night and it was AMAZING. We ordered the meat platter for 2 with grilled vegetables, Cretan salad, and 0.5 l of house white wine. Everything was the best food of our vacation! This is saying a lot since we were just in Istanbul and Cairo and had delicious food prior to arriving in Crete. The staff is so very friendly. We had lunch here a few days previously and they remembered us and shook our hands and greeted us warmly. Wonderful, attentive service. Do yourself a favor and eat at this restaurant. You won't regret it.

We reserved a table following a recommendation from our accommodations owner and it was a sincerely good choice !! Friendly and attentive service ( not rushed ) was just perfect for us . This was coupled with the food being Brilliant - The Aubergine ( Imam ) starter was simply top notch . We followed with the superb pork medallions and a Delicious aged cut of Tagliata (with chimichurri on the side ) . A lovely bottle of Malagousia accompanied the food and our evening was complete . Highly recommended and we will be hopefully be able to return ( Snappily !) prior to the season close . Until next time : Mark & T

Restaurant
Castro restaurant & cafe bar is a relatively new establishment that has quickly gained popularity among both tourists and locals. Situated near the old ruins of the castle, it offers a stunning view and a comfortable atmosphere. The food is described as delicious, fresh, and exquisite, with friendly and attentive staff providing excellent service. Guests have praised the variety of dishes offered, including grilled veggies and tuna tataki.
Good. This is good! Opened last year in August, the place is still not crowded but attended by a mix of tourists (couples and families) and locals, the latter who usually stay at the top of the building just for drinks. The place is clean, the view is great, the food is good! Also the service is really nice. They made a mistake and brought some grilled veggie we did not ask for and they told us to keep for free. At the end, raki and a nice chocolate mousse on the house. Well done guys!
Andrea M — Google review
Castro restaurant aims to provide better quality food and experience, and the premise is promising: it lies just under the fort in Paleiochora which stands proud on a small rock between the two beaches. The views are amazing. It is a lovely place to chill at the end of the afternoon. The staff help with making the experience more enjoyable too and the choice of cocktails is good. But apart from the virgin cocktail which is tasteful, the other ones were not done very well. Most disappointed in the espresso martini that was clearly missing a sweetener (no kalhua?). We had food below after our drinks and seelcted a variety of dishes. Firstly, there were barely any snacks to order or small appetisers to share (we were starving), and then our mains proved to not uphold the quality and prices that the restaurant boasted. There was one meagre carrot with my salmon, and similar with the tuna. The prawn linguini came with a total of 3 shrimps and was lukewarm and the chicken's mash potatoes were equally cold. To top it off, the young waiter really didn't know her wines and got the order wrong. Only redeeming item was the tuna steak which was very tasteful and well prepared. Whilst these might be details, they spoiled the experience a bit, especially at the prices involved.
Jeremy L — Google review
Update: unfortunately I need to update my review after four years. The food is not in the same standard and the prices have risen dramatically. I wouldn’t recommend this place anymore. My original review four years ago for reference: Best restaurant in town and probably in all of southern Crete. High high-end cuisine and attention to detail. Get the red beet salad! Very fair prices for the high standard of quality.

What a great place. On top there is a cocktail bar with some of the greatest and tasty cocktails we ever had. It also has a panoramic view of the Paleochora village, mountains and the sea. Perfect place to watch the sun set. Downstairs is the restaurant. Very friendly service, very tasty and upmarket food and a good selection of wines gave us that ‘night out’ feeling. Highly recommended!
