Methexis is a picturesque coastal town located on a small peninsula in the southwestern part of Crete, between two bays and along the shores of the Libyan Sea. It has been a popular destination for many years due to its beautiful beaches and pleasant surroundings. The village offers authentic traditional restaurants with fresh ingredients sourced from local producers. Visitors can enjoy a variety of dishes, including grilled meat, casseroles, oven-baked dishes like moussaka, and stuffed vegetables.
Lovely place to have dinner in Paleochora with a beautiful view! The octopus and the dessert were amazing!

Beautiful outdoor patio with a large menu to choose from. They make delicious Greek speciality dishes everyday. Fresh caught fish to choose from and traditional Greek dishes. Beautiful view of the ocean and mountains.
Andrea D — Google review
If you’re looking for an authentic Greek dining experience in Paleochora, this traditional tavern is an absolute gem! Nestled in a beautiful spot with breathtaking views of the Cretan landscape, it offers the perfect mix of atmosphere, flavor, and hospitality. The highlight of our meal was the lamb—tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection.
Kostas B — Google review
Methexis in Palaiochora is an unforgettable spot for authentic Cretan food with a beautiful sea view. We tried the octopus in wine sauce, which was tender and full of flavor, the slow-cooked lamb, and the kleftiko — all perfectly prepared and deeply satisfying. The tsigariasto was another highlight, rich and hearty, and the tirokafteri (htipiti) added the perfect spicy, creamy touch alongside the mains. Generous portions, traditional recipes, and the relaxed seaside atmosphere make this a must-visit when in Palaiochora.
Gabriel D — Google review
Fantastic place.little walk round the coast to get to but worth it. Late October most places are mybe half full.this was busy. Had beef stifado and goat in the oven and meat was falling off bone. Token cake and raki at the end was very nice.
Krugerstravels — Google review
We were immediately intrigued to try this place given the stellar Google reviews and we certainly were not disappointed. Came for a casual lunch and were met with warmth and excellent service. Situated right on the coast, you will find yourself both captivated by the view and the food. We all ordered different dishes and tried each other's and every dish was beautiful. I can especially recommend the grilled calamari which was the best fish I had eaten all vacation. A lovely range of delicious coffees too. And then once we had paid, the friendly staff brought us ice cold refreshing watermelon. What a lovely place.
Sam S — Google review
Was recommended this restaurant from someone who had been a lot so were looking forward to it with high expectations. We arrived to a busy evening, got almost the last table. The waiter who came to take our order was so busy having a heated conversation with another waiter whilst we were mid order that he really wasn't listening to us and didnt make us feel welcome at all. This culminated in one of our meals arriving quickly but the other one not arriving until over an hour after we had sat down. We had to remind them we had ordered it and it had obviously not been put through to the kitchen properly. 1 hour 15 minutes later it arrived but one of us finished our meal before the other had even arrived. Our server was totally uninterested in us and at no time did we get an apology. It felt like we were being ignored and the whole service was so disappointing. The grilled meatball and Fries that finally arrived after 1 hr 15 mins was totally underwhelming and not worth waiting for. However the cretan salad was lovely, the vine leaves and stuffed zucchini flowers lovely but the server needs to realise he let everything down so much as he said nothing welcoming to us, no smiles, no friendliness and more importantly no apology for us having to wait so long. Cretan hospitality is amazing but definitely not here.
Emma T — Google review
I went with this restaurant with my dad for dinner, we both had steak it was absolutely delicious!! Definitely one of the best steaks I had!! The atmosphere is amazing it's warm even though its outside with great view (the sea) also there's kittens everywhere making the place even more cozy!! The employees are very nice and helpfull, definitely will come again!! Recommended for sure

Bar
Monika's Garden Wine Bar is an exceptional establishment that boasts a delightful ambiance and an extensive selection of wines. The knowledgeable staff, picturesque surroundings, and delectable snack platters make it a truly remarkable destination. What sets this bar apart is the sommelier's ability to remember patrons' preferences, resulting in personalized wine choices. Additionally, the serene backyard provides a tranquil place to unwind after a day at the beach.
We came here everyday during our 4 day visit. The environment is charming and the wine is so tasty. Of course Crete wine would be as great as all of the food on this island. The service is great and the guys were knowledgeable about all of the winemakers. Highly recommend!
Hailey D — Google review
We had a fantastic wine tasting experience with Andy. We are from California and had no clue about wines from Crete. Andy guided us through his choices, selecting a sequence of local grapes and winemakers. He added some snacks and cheeses to complement the selection for an awesome experience.
Randy H — Google review
Excellent selection of wine from Crete, the staff had a lot of knowledge about local wine, and made great recommendation’s. Lovely atmosphere in the garden. Don’t miss it if you’re in Paleochora!

We are not familiar with wine from Crete, but the waiter guided us based on our preferences in known wines. We very much enjoyed the recomended wines. Nice and calm athmosphere in the garden.

Really good for tasting local wine ! They have good amount of choice and the staff is friendly and helpful The garden and the decorations are really great ! The ambiance make the wine experience better ! We had bruschetta pesto tomato with our wine and was super nice !
Audrey S — Google review
The best bar we visited in Crete. The staff were super nice, the wines were great and the ambient was exceptional. Reasonable prices, definately a must visit in Paleochora.
Enej R — Google review
This place is so good I almost don’t want to tell you about it…. From the knowledge of the staff, to the gorgeous setting, extensive wine list, and snack platters there is nothing to change! The icing on the cake is the sommelier remembered our previous preference to make future wine choices. You will visit her more than once on your trip to Palaiochora!

Restaurant
MasaSoura Restaurant is a highly regarded dining establishment in Paleochora, offering a diverse range of cuisine from traditional Greek to international fusion. The restaurant aims to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all patrons, with attentive service and delicious dishes prepared by the chef. Visitors can expect fresh and flavorful food, including well-prepared octopus, homemade salads with sweet and sour dressings, Greek salad with Cretan feta, tender meatballs, and zucchini balls.
Excellent restaurant in all ways. Food was fresh and delicious. Lovely laid-back vibe and service great. We came here in low season but the restaurant was still busy at lunchtime. The salad I had was full of lots of different things with a sweet and sour dressing (think vinegar, honey and oil not like sweet/sour dressings from the Uk). Bread was fresh and the courgette balls were perfect. Even the complimentary dessert was tasty and I usually don’t like these. Great place and will be straight back here next time we visit Paleochora.
Sue V — Google review
My husband and I really loved everything, the food, the service and the kind staff! It was our first day in Crete, the first restaurant we tried and it was just amazing!
Raghad A — Google review
We had the chicken fillet in mustard sauce with peppers and the lamb ribs. It was delicious. Nice place with great service.
Lisa M — Google review
One of the best restaurants to check out! We had red beet root salad, tzatziki and fried zucchini chips as starters, beef stifaki and pork souflaki with some excellent white house wine. The staff was very friendly and knowledgly answered questions about dishes. The location is very nice. Lots of locals in the restaurants. We had view on u church and the ferry in the harbor. (Would give 6 stars :))
FOC — Google review
Absolutely fantastic food, some of the best we've eaten in Crete.. excellent quality and reasonable price too. Staff friendly and warm. We ate here twice and we rarely return to the same restaurant even when they are good.

Chalikia Beach is a popular spot known for its pebbly shore, clear waters, and stunning views of the rugged hills. Tucked away among lush greenery, it offers a sense of seclusion. Nearby, visitors can take a short hike to reach the pristine Grammeno Beach for unspoiled natural beauty. The Libyan Princess Hotel overlooks the beach and provides contemporary rooms with panoramic views.
Beautiful views. Clean water. Everywhere stones and pebbles. Not as windy as the one on the other side of the town
A C — Google review
A wonderful beach with tavern where tasty Greek foof is served. 2 sunbeds + umbrella only 7 Euros, free parking.
Valentin L — Google review
Paid 6 € for 2 beds, parking also available. Very calm and not too windy as on the other side of town. Shade under trees and very clear water
FOC — Google review
Very clean and calm water. There was a windy weather on the other side of the town on the other beach but here was as calm as it gets. First few meters are rock and pebbles after it’s just sand. A bit boring for snorkeling but still good nonetheless. Parking is no issue as you can park by the shore all the way.
Ivan D — Google review
I really love this beach. The water is crystal clear and it’s much quieter if you walk further down. The families with children usually stay near the road, so once you go past that area it feels very calm and peaceful. The only downside is that the sunbeds are now €8, whereas I’ve seen in other reviews they used to be much cheaper.

Cocktail bar
Agios Bar, a charming and cozy cocktail bar near the lake, exudes a nautical theme with its wooden interiors and classic rock music. It is renowned for its extensive collection of rare single malt Scotch whiskeys, making it a perfect spot for whiskey enthusiasts seeking tastings and engaging conversations amidst antique maritime decorations. Additionally, Agios Bar prides itself on being a traditional music cafe, pub, and meeting point for both locals and tourists.
If you want your taste buds treated and leave a bar with a massive smile on your face you have come to the right place
Steven G — Google review
So, there are those high end, known and less known, cocktail bars in the world (or other local) capitals you've heard about and probably went there, perhaps even numerous times and you thought that was it, all fine, and then you come in to Agios Bar. So what's all about? Very simple: genuine people, enjoying creating authentic -the way you like it- cocktails in a cozy, feel good assembled bar under impactful and surprisingly eclectic music genres creating real(ly) memorable experiences. Am I missing anything? The relaxed vibe and natural beauty of Paleochora are on a doorstep of this little Agios Paradise.
Urbanbk — Google review
One of the best cocktails I tried. The cocktails are prepared very nicely and with perfection. Very friendly staff to assist you with the choice that fits you the most.
Jens J — Google review
This bar is a must, especially if you're into cocktails - the bartender is simply an alchemist! We had Bamboo, Trees of life, Mandrill (my favourite), and some delicious fruity shots. Loved the sustainable metallic straws as well! Coffee is good too, and the mixed fruit juice is a proper breakfast by itself.
Vessie D — Google review
An hidden gem. We were in Paliocoras for a day and we set at this bar mostly for the colourful vibe of the place. We found what probably is the best cocktail bar in Crete. The cocktails and the study behind them are incredible! I loved the idea to use local flavours like honey and raki. The attention to the details in the menu, with the story of each cocktail, it really shows the passion and professionalism behind the bar. Everyone was super nice and experienced in their job. They know how to transmit their passion. We had to head back home, otherwise we would have easily spent the night trying all the cocktails. Keep it up! We hope to come back one day.
Nadja D — Google review
This is the bar to be in Paleochora! It is located in the heart of the town. While you watch people or have a nice conversation you enjoy the best drinks in town and chat with Giorgos the barman! Mayebe the prices might be a bit more than in other bars but the ambience, service and quality of the drinks are worth it! My wifes favorite drink is the "Green bubble Gin", you have to try it! I usually had a Negron, an Ouzo with Ice (Ouzo ton pagaton) or a "megali Mamos" 👌
Michel B — Google review
Much more than a "night life" institution in Paleochora. It's an all day spot but it really comes to life in the evening. The cocktails are simply superb. Try the challenging See-through Margarita (with seaweed from Gramvousa) or the middle-of-the-road Twisted Spicy Mango (based on gin). The Chiquita (with various rums) is another fruity choice. A must!
Christos V — Google review
Fresh sandwich which was really tasty and a good portion size too. Simple menu with fair prices and a nicely positioned bar to watch the world go by. The chairs were uncomfortable otherwise 5 star.

Castles
Castel Selino, also known as Kastelli Selino, has a rich history dating back to 1272 when it was built by a Venetian general. The fortress offers stunning views over the town and sea approaches and is currently undergoing excavation and restoration. Despite the toll exacted by Venetian, Ottoman, and German occupation, visitors can still enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the town below from this historical site.
Great views of Paleochora. The ruins of this cool fort date back to 1279 and was used during Crete’s Venetian and Ottoman years. Photographs from 9 June 2021.
John Q — Google review
Not much to see, but great views over the village and ocean, and a nice place to wander about and have a look at the castle remains. There is a board at the entrance with some historical details which is useful. Definitely worth a visit to the castle if you’re in Paleochora but not worth travelling here to visit the castle alone.
Sue V — Google review
Not a lot to see, but interesting none the less. Views were worth the visit
Sharon T — Google review
Interesting history and fantastic views. Walk past the fort to the edge of the cliff for more views East and West.
Ben A — Google review
There is not much left of this venetian fortress that used to control the trade routes on the southern part of the island. You can still enjoy the view of the sea and the town below

Set above the town the fortress is being excavated/restored, and has views over the town and sea approaches. Venetian, Ottoman, and German occupation exacted a toll on the fortress, but it is worth the climb for the views.

Bar
To Liri tis Papias is a bar in Paleochora that offers an impressive selection of cocktails. While some customers have mentioned slight inconsistencies in the bar's signature drinks, it could be attributed to different bartenders or variations in their preparation methods. However, one drink that comes highly recommended is the Buddha Shot. On a good day, this beverage provides a truly memorable experience.
An incredible coffee shop experience! The coffee was rich and flavorful, with a variety of blends to satisfy every taste. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a cozy vibe that makes it a great spot to relax or work. The staff were friendly, attentive, and always ready to offer recommendations. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or just looking for a great place to unwind, this spot is a must-visit!
George V — Google review
Great cocktails to be found here. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars on my account is due to their changing aspects of their signature cocktails over 2 consecutive days of visiting, either indicating different people working on the bar at different levels of experience or a non standard manner or recreating their signature cocktails. If you decide to visit you must try the Buddha Shot depicted. On a good day this is a memorable experience to be had!
Kay — Google review
We haven't been here at night only during the day during the "off-season" and Niko makes the most amazing food. Honestly anything he cooks for you is amazing! No dish is the same the next day but tastes just as good if not better. We look forward to come to Palaichora just to eat Nikos food! His bougatsa is the best I have ever tasted, his omelette is amazing, club sandwich is out of this world, the ice cream so tasty. My son calls him the best cook in the world and I agree! Prices are very very reasonable considering how fresh the food is and how good the quality is. Coffee is great also! Everything is just so fresh and good
Stella K — Google review

The food is also highly praised, with mentions of delicious club sandwiches, special omelettes, and freshly made orange juice.

Caravella Restaurant is a charming eatery located just 300 meters from Paleochora center, offering delightful meals with coastal views. It's the perfect place to unwind after exploring the city. While the prices are on the higher side, especially for fish dishes, their raw sea urchin appetizer and fresh black snapper are standout items. The restaurant is known for its expertise in cooking fish and serves tasty local dishes accompanied by delicious olive oil.
what a fantastic meal at Caravella restaurant our first night here and lobster was amazing. Great service and ambience
Paula K — Google review
Had been recommended by a friend but unfortunately it was a let down (Wednesday 14/8 for dinner). Expected something better from a 7.5 euro per 100gr golden grouper kind of place. Slow service, mistake in the bill, mediocre salad & kaltsounia. Would also change the signage and refresh the whole customer experience approach which is not just providing tablets instead of a hard copy menu (unless we were so unlucky). Pity because the location is nice and it looks popular.
Kostas K — Google review
Great Cretan food! We had the grilled calamari and linguine with mussels in garlic and wine sause. Amazing good dishes! The biggest surprice though was the Mastelo cheese. It is from the Greek island Chios and served with home made marmelade from tomatoes wich the ladyowner of the restaurant picks herselfe and prepare. The best cheese we have had so far!

We found this lovely restaurant last and couldn’t resist visiting it again. We ended up eating there every night. Their quality of food is constant. As good food is a big part of our holiday I can say that this part was perfect.
Erkki T — Google review
Had amazing linguini with shrimps in garlic & wine sauce and grilled dorade. You can select the fish you want from display. The spicy feta cream is amazing too and the staff very friendly.
FOC — Google review
The food was delicious both times we visited. The shrimp saganaki was amazing, and the grilled octopus was also really tasty, though the presentation could have been a bit better—but the flavour made up for it. The giant beans were lovely, and I’d definitely recommend them. The complimentary raki and apple or pear dessert were a nice, refreshing touch. Service wasn’t quite as attentive when we went on the weekend, but to be fair the place was packed. Otherwise, the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be going back.
Lego T — Google review
A restaurant with very nice atmosphere and sea view but the taste of the food wasn’t something special, in contrast with the previous years. First of all,the guy at the front of the restaurant who sit us on the table was not very polite. After that the Greek “fava” had a e very Smokey flavour like something burnt. Also the shrimps on the shrimps pasta hadn’t had their Gastrointestinal tract removed and we had to do it ourselves.. red flag. The waiters were polite , and the kalamari was perfect. They have big variety of different types of wine. And very nice atmosphere.
Trip O — Google review
Unfortunately the food was overcooked and tasteless. A shame for a restaurant specialising in fresh fish and seafood. The staff were very nice, the setting is lovely. Just need to cook the food better!

Galaxy Restaurant, a renowned seafood eatery established in 1980 as a family venture, resides in close proximity to Paleochora's beach in southern Chania. Offering picturesque vistas of the Libyan Sea, this establishment has become my go-to dining spot since 2016. The cuisine is exceptional, particularly the delectable fresh calamari and rabbit stew. Additionally, their prices are reasonable and the service is top-notch.
Right in front of the sea and next to the beautiful beach to the east of Palaiochora, we had an amazing lunch with the best traditional Greek and Cretan dishes. Staff was kind, quick and welcoming. Recommended!

The servers probably can't speak much English, it seems like they're ashamed to speak up. Which means I got something else than I ordered, but that's not a big problem for me. The misunderstanding was mutual, so it was probably partly my fault that I didn't ask the man to repeat himself. (I heard him asking "just a salad?", but he was probably making sure I wanted tuna salad, which I didn't.) But whatever, that's not a reason for a low rating to me. The tuna salad was ok, too. What I really didn't like was how cold the waiters seemed. I'm used to everyone being extremely nice in Palaiochora, and although these men at least smiled from time to time (with the "customer service smile"), I felt unwelcome. Moreover, there were only 2 tables and around 4 waiters, but they would still let me sit there for like 20 minutes with empty dishes, just standing there and looking over my head. Same thing when it came to paying, I got the folder with the cheque, I put in my money, and they kept ignoring me again. I also got bread that I didn't ask for, and I didn't even touch it, but got charged for it anyway. I still tipped, because I guess that might just be how they're taught to do it and none of their fault, but it wasn't a very pleasant experience for me overall. I'm glad they have good ratings, I just can't say the same.

I can sum up our visit in two words: really disappointing! The service was appalling, the food was mediocre and to top it all the 'welcome bread' ( the waitress's words ) was itemised on the bill! Unfortunately we cannot recommend a visit. Fortunately for us we know that this restaurant visit is NOT representative of Greek hospitality.

This restaurant makes food for tourists. Honestly, this was one of the worst meals I’ve had in a while, and the worst meal I’ve ever eaten in Greece. We ordered octopus, fish, calamari, vlita, and dakos- pretty much everything was bland and the octopus was over cooked and had the consistency of rubber. The worst part of it all was the price, this was the worst meal we had and cost the most money! Best part of the dinner was the view. If you go to galaxy just go for the drinks and not the food.

The place is at a nice location but thats actually it. Food below average. Servece slow and careless. Not recommended!

Great place to eat with a sea view, see the colours of the sunset on the mountains nearby and eat good Greek food at reasonable prices. Last night we had slow cooked lamb, cuttlefish with local greens, and a big plate of beans in tomatoes, all with their delicious family wine which is like a rich rose.

The restaurant is known for its creative and memorable dishes, including a delightful vegetarian appetizer platter upon request. I really liked this restaurant. All the dishes were super delicious and the service was quite good.We were proactive to book from the sea side and it was absolutely a romantic dinner. We have ordered eggplant salad, skaltounia, kolokithoanthoi. The main course was not in my taste( pasta with lamb) but it was well cooked Highly recommended!

Delicious and fresh food. The menu differs a lot compared to most of the standard taverns in the area. It contains some quite exquisite meals, salads and starters. The staff is very friendly. We'll be back next year. Compliments to the chef.

Our favorite restaurant while in Crete, we went back twice! Very friendly and knowledgeable waiters, healthy good with a care for ingredients. We had the fresh fish, lamb and calamari and can recommend it all. Highly recommend.

It's probably the best place to eat in Paleochora! We've eaten here twice, and it was super delicious! We've had here Taramosala, Aubergines Salad, Tzatziki, Chicken Fillet with grilled Veggie, and probably the best thing I've eaten is some time: Pork Shank. I recommend all their food and the place itself. Nice people serving there, good location, amazing views, and low prices! You'll get on the house some Raki and desserts!
Andrei B — Google review
The grilled calamari, spicy shrimps (not pictured), and taramosalata were delicious. we found the dough slightly too thick for the capelletti although it was very flavorful. The smoked eggplant salad was unexpected as it turned out to be a purée (think baba ganoush) rather than a salad as described

The service and food was really nice. We had the beetroot risotto with calamari, ravlings and the spicy shrimps. We got some crispy dip with some sort of dip as a snack before on the house and after we got some aged raki and mastix liqour. The price was also good. I would love to come here again.

Very nice restaurant with amazing views. Magical atmosphere during the night with all the lights and lively sounds. Absolutely great spicy shrimps buns! Food was good, althought steak a bit chewy. Nice little touch with dessert and ouzo at the end of the meal. We were a little bit surprised when the bill came and there was extra VAT charge.

We were there a week ago.We ordered coffee and cakes. The carrot cake was stale, the lemon pie better but not good. They are supposed to be all fresh and daily products as they produce the cakes. But they prefer to serve stale cakes and be defamed than serve the best quality and be famous for that.

Gialiskari Beach is a hidden gem located just 4 km from the charming town of Paleochora in Crete, making it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility away from the crowds. The journey to this stunning beach involves a scenic drive or a leisurely walk along a dirt track, but every step is worth it as you approach the breathtaking pebble shoreline nestled between two cliffs.
One of my favourite places in Crete. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, with cristal clear water, and the restaurant on the beach offering really tasty meals. Highly recommended! 😀

Nice and easy hike out and back from Paleochora on a hot summer day. Beach is not really worth it considering you get charged for sunbeds even that far out of town.
Ma N — Google review
Our first time on the southern side of Crete – Paleochora turned out to be something we really loved! You live alongside the locals in this small village, which was a positive thing. Even the bus ride over the mountain from Chania was an experience in itself, not to mention the views from the bus window. Gialiskari Beach became our favorite beach, and we went there three times during our stay in Paleochora. It’s about 4.5 km each way, along a varied and scenic route. We went there in the afternoons so we could walk back at sunset – it was beautiful.
Jörgen H — Google review
Very nice beach. A little rough to get too with the car. We went in February and filmed one of our kettlebell workouts on this beach. The weather was great and I had a dip in the water afterward, although most people would probably think it too cold.
Taco F — Google review
Favorite beach, small pebbles, very clear water, beautiful scenery. If you don't have a vehicle you can go with the small shuttle bus from the port in the morning and back in the afternoon or just hike, it's a very beautiful walk. Times for the shuttle is posted on poles and ticket offices in town. There is a small tavern with what you need as well. If you want shade you have to bring an umbrella or rent a sunbed. My best advice is to do a small hike/walk along the coast away from Paleochora towards Sougia, just a small walk will reveal the most beautiful coastline.
Iris H — Google review
An excellent beach with a nice atmosphere. You can choose different types of areas. Beach taverns offer good food. Clean toilets. transport is arranged from Paleochora.
Heli B — Google review
Beautiful beach, head to the furthest beach away from the one with thw beach bar and generator. The second one is much smaller shingle and beautiful clear water. Beach bar and sunbeds if required.
Emma T — Google review
We went to Gialiskari today 9/10 and escaped the winds on the other side of Paleochora. The road in is a bit rough so just take your time and go slowly so that you avoid stone damage. The beach itself was a delight. The first section with umbrellas looked fine but we walked further along the beach to the nudist section. Here we paid £12 for 2 sunbeds and umbrella, took our gear off and enjoyed the day in the nude. We were however a bit shocked in the temperature of the water as it was so much colder than Plakias a couple of days ago.

Amazingly beautiful bay and beach, with turqoise water. Mostly Greek people here. Very quiet. Full of fish. Great place for snorkling.
Aernoudt K — Google review
An interesting beach for all those who are looking for relatively untouched nature and are able to provide either their own shade or find a corner in the shade in the natural shade of trees. The water is clean, snorkeling is not very exciting, rather boring, the diversity of the fish population is limited to five or seven species, we hardly see any shells. Still, a beautiful beach and probably the most "wild" in the immediate vicinity (up to 3 km). Why the rating 5, because we did not find similar "wilderness" in the immediate vicinity. Of course, a few km further there is something very interesting and worth a visit.
Borut B — Google review
This beach is 10min drive from Palaiochora. Sandy beach in a small bay, well protected from the waves and wind. It’s shallow and crystal clear waters are perfect for all levels of swimmers. It’s perfect for families with little kids as well. It offers 3-4 smaller bays with their own “beaches” as well as a small peninsula with nude beach - all with sandy sea floor. It has 2 beach bars and fantastic taverna with great local food. This beach without any doubt is if not the top beach in Crete, one of the top 5! Very highly recommended!

Thick Sand is a popular beach destination with its large umbrellas providing shade for a reasonable price. The watermelon servings are delicious, and the water is pleasant for swimming with visible fish around the rocky areas. Visitors can rent paddle boards and other water sports gear, making it suitable for families, friends, or solo travelers. The beach offers amenities such as sunbeds, umbrellas for rent, free showers and changing rooms, and wheelchair accessibility.
Very nice large sandy beach in Paleochora. The beach on the other side is pebbles and smaller so this one is better if you want sunbeds and umbrellas but still have space. The beach is long as well as wide so plenty of space and never far away from the nearby cafes and bars. Perfect combination. We visited on the same day in late October that we also went to Elafonissi beach and this beach in Paleochora was much quieter than Elafonissi. Didn’t go in the water but it looked shallow and clear. Area of the beach looked clean and well kept as we walked along.

Really long beach. Lots of places where you can rent sunbeds. You can also go further and find some quiet place. Water is clean, perfect for young kids as the water doesn't get deep to quickly. Can be a bit windy some times but still ok at the time we went there.
Nicolas B — Google review
if you come here from the northern part of the island, it's not worth the trip. the sunbeds cost us 26 euros, nothing included ofc, it was very windy and it creates small wind tornados on the beach wich will eventually get sand all over you. the restaurants nearby are pretty expensive and the food is mediocre at best. not the best experience, but no the worst either
Sergiu U — Google review
Very nice gold sandy beach. Water was warm and good to swim even at the end of September when in the north part of the island was raining. It is amazing. The absence of sand makes it perfect for those who dislike sandy beaches, with small naturally rounded stones providing a pleasant experience.
It’s remote and pristine pebble beach with a small taverna. The water gets deep quickly but it seems like along the coastline there are no big stones under water. West from the beach there is another smaller beach which looks very picturesque and is also a nudist beach.

Super clean water. The small cove at the end of the beach is calmer water than the main part. There is a bar/restaurant, a shower and a changing shack. The umbrellas/loungers are payable, 10 eur per pair of loungers + umbrella in early October.

Paid 6 € for 2 beds, parking also available. Very calm and not too windy as on the other side of town. Shade under trees and very clear water

Very clean and calm water. There was a windy weather on the other side of the town on the other beach but here was as calm as it gets. First few meters are rock and pebbles after it’s just sand. A bit boring for snorkeling but still good nonetheless. Parking is no issue as you can park by the shore all the way.

Interesting beach...also known as Votsala beach...such a clear water, even it was a little bit cold in june

Nice small pebble beach near the Paleochora promenade 🌊 Beautiful mountain view ⛰️ Easy access to the water — it gets deep right away, which is great! Today it’s very quiet and relaxing 😌 Sunbeds cost 4 € for the whole day 🏖️

Didnt like it much. Not that its bad. But not worth it with children.

Outdoor Activities
Paralia Psilos Volakas is a hidden gem located about 3 km west of Paleochora in Crete. This unexplored corner of the island offers several beautiful beaches, and Paralia Psilos Volakas stands out as one of the finest. The beach features soft gravelly sand that provides some protection from the wind on most days. Visitors can relax on sun loungers and enjoy reasonably priced food and drinks from the beach bar.
Amazing little beach owned by locals. Giant, clean bathroom the whole family can change in. Quiet. Free chairs. Rocks for snorkeling. $5 wine glass that’s the size of two. Food. It has everything for a quiet day away from crowds.
Avery G — Google review
One of the most beautiful and calm beaches in Crete. Rocky road to get to the beach (not recommend for wheelchairs or prawners), but worth the drive and walk (2-5 minutes)
Pieter-Paul P — Google review
Awesome, quiet beach with mostly locals. There’s a big cliff from where people jump in the water, great vibes. The beach bar also had good food. I’d definitely recommend this beach over the crowded, touristy ones!
Viktória K — Google review
My best beach in Crete ever. It looks like a natural pool.
Teja G — Google review
More calm beach with mostly locals. Good even on windy day as the beach is located in a bay and has rocks instead of sand blasting with the wind. Water is really clear and the seabed is from fine sand.
Juho L — Google review
Quiet and perfect little beac a bit outside of Paleohora. Sun beds for rent, parking lot, toilet. Crystal clear water, beautiful view
Ann S — Google review
Although this is not sandy I would recommend going to this beach. You can hire sunbeds, there is restaurant and toilets just by quite spacious car park. The best of all is that it is hidden among the rocks sheltered from the wind. Water is crystal turquoise blue and best of all you will find places for cliff jumping of different heights. Perfect for eventful day!

Ethnographic museum
The Museum of the Acritans of Europe, located in Crete, offers a glimpse into the daily life and traditions of the Cretans. It showcases a diverse collection of objects from rural tradition, providing insight into the folklore and defense of the Western borders. The museum's new location in Palaeochora makes it easily accessible to visitors who can explore its small yet interesting exhibits.
In 2018 the Museum moved into his new premises in the centre of Palaeochora

(Translated by Google) We came on a Sunday at 11am and it was closed despite advertised hours of 10am-1pm Wednesday to Sunday. Big lack of clear information, it's a real shame because it looks interesting and it's a change from the huge archaeological museums with a thousand pottery remains.
