Theme Parks
Vulcania is a volcanic-themed amusement park and museum located in the heart of the volcanic region around the Puy-de-Do volcano. The park offers a combination of interactive high-tech shows, educational movies, and thrilling rides that provide an immersive experience about the nature and mysteries of volcanoes. Visitors can explore various aspects related to volcanoes, earthquakes, chemistry, geology, and legends associated with them while enjoying fun attractions suitable for both children and adults.
Much much better and entertaining than expected. Great if you are interested in volcanoes and also astronomy, hurricanes. Special kudos to the team explaining seismology: sharp and funny. While entertaining and often suitable for children, many sets are scientifically solid such earth history, space exploration. My only quibble: very few explanations in English and I did not see any movies or experiences with English or any subtitles
Marquis D — Google review
The parc is nice with lots of 3D and dynamic activities, BUT I was hoping for more information on the actual volcanoes in Auvergne. There is 1 rather tatty display. I wanted to know how tall the volcanoes were, who lived in the area then and now, how it shapes the local agriculture, etc. This parc could be set anywhere else (like nearby a town with actual lodging and public transportation) and you wouldn't see the difference.
Sophie T — Google review
Very interesting and instructive park, the kids loved the roller coaster but also all the 2, 3 and 4D movies. Too bad some shows were not opened yet due to French holidays not having started yet.
Stéphanie D — Google review
Very informative and interesting place to learn about the earth's surface, space, volcanoes and a whole lot more. There were shows, rides, mini movies, play areas for smalln children etc
Aidan N — Google review
A pretty good family day out. You can't go out in France and expect things to not be in French, so plan for that if you don't speak French. There is an audio guide available in other languages but didn't see a lot of the numbers about, it does click in automatically on some displays but doesn't cover the shows (which are all in french, despite some indicating they are french only). Once the language stuff is out the way it's a really interesting place, covers some geology, palentology, astronomy, marine and a bit of local history - plus rides and attractions loosely themed around things people believed in before science explained volcanos and other natural phenomenon. There's a lot of reading and learning content which with my children was hard to get time to cover as there's many more exciting things to do, the shows are great - some are more interactive and fun than others, spelling Icelandic volcanoes was tough but the science demos were great. Well worth a visit if you're in the area and the planetarium (biggest in France apparently) is mind-blowing so prioritise some shows there!
Alistair W — Google review
A bit of a confusing experience, expected more. Things I liked: free parking / many activities / lots of staff. Things I didn't like: Everything is in French & French only. The signs, the explination, the instructions in person or in one of the many movies/theatres. I know you can ask an audio guide (which we did) but then it's difficult to know when to start the audio (I was 2mins out of sync in the big theatre. In the "Terre en colère" it is a great idea to have interaction with the dynamic quiz, but again, all in French & French only. Just adding English subtitles on the screens would make a huge improvement. (And I am not British but English seems like a logical choice to be as universal as possible) What I really didn't like: * the limitations for little kids. I know they pay less, but it feels like it doesn't make sense. They can go on rollercoasters from 1,00m height (in other parks I mean of course) but they cannot join you on a vibrating platform that hardly moves. For the "Réveil des géants d’Auvergne" it advertises as a minimum height of 90cm, but when we arrived at the queuing line there was a sign that stated minimum height of 110cm? (after being denied the entrance before at another dynamic animation we didn't care to queue anymore for this and just left). * the online ticket booking: when you visit the website in French you can find combo tickets, promotional packages, ... But when you choose the English version you only get the default ticket options, no price reduction for families or couples like on the French version. So I tried to book via the French version with browser translation, all good until prices suddenly change during the booking process? Ticket adult changed from 27,5€ to 31€, Ticket "enfant" ticket changed form 22,5€ to 26€, the Bambini changed form 7€ to 8€ ?? How and why? My thoughts on this park? If you are French speaking and are more than 110 or 120cm and you like Vulcanoes, then please visit, it will be fun and interesting. Otherwise, I will not advertise this park as a must do at all. From my experience, this was way to expensive for what we got.
Geert B — Google review
The museum has a very interesting and modern architectural concept, with three levels of underground experiences. However, it’s unclear whether it’s meant to be a science museum or an amusement park. As an amusement park, the attractions are quite underwhelming, most of them involve simply watching a screen. It’s also not easy to enjoy if you don’t speak French. Everything only in french. They only give you an audio guide, which is not convenient. The idea of the place is great, but the way it’s done could be much better.
Glafira K — Google review
Posting as someone who doesn't understand french. We used the English audio guides as we did for many other french museums. The audio guide was inadequate for the full experience. (1) Many experiences in the park involve live actors or narrators. That's not something that the audio guide could help. (2) some exhibits simply don't have a number for the audio guide. (3) not all shows or movies have translation in the audio guide. Some do. However, the volume of the audio guide is low. So, when there's french in the background, all four of us could not really hear the English. If this is a quiet museum, it might be fine. But with the setting, it didn't work. So, if you don't understand french, don't count on the audio guide.

A very modern take on “visiting” the production site of world famous volvic water. There is a short and a long tour. Th beginning of exhibition is interesting. It feels a bit cramped; the pictures, diagrams etc could have an English translation next to them; they do hand out tablets with everything translated. The Virtual Reality part of the exhibition is very cool! Here they take you through the step by step logistics or bottling and distribution. At the end was a Volvic tasting area: basically all variants are free to try. Very friendly and helpful staff. Appreciate the effort to make such a visit interesting and educational.

Claire W — Google review
I went with my wife and her family who live in the area (Clermont Ferrand). We entered the place and it had a charming french countryside decor. The owner greeted us and gave us menus, he was very nice an welcoming. We started with fresh tomatoes from their garden which were delicious with a little bit of olive oil, onion, and garlic. I ordered a Hamburger with blue cheese, and the rest of the table ordered frog legs and sausage. Each main plate was amazing. My Hamburger was perfectly cooked, the frog legs were the best I've had in France, and the sausage had great flavour. Each plate was full of food with a good amount of frites or potatoes as a side. Superb quality and quantity for the price. The menu of the day came with a small bottle of wine for the table to share. After the Hamburger I was satisfied, but the menu also came with a plate of cheese typical for the region. The chevre was made in house and was delicious. We also tried the Saint Nectaire, which was my wife's favourite. Finally, my stomach was so full and my taste buds over flowing dessert was brought and brought the whole experience to an excellent point and gave me maybe the best restaurant experience I have had in France. I would come back any time and plan to whenever I visit my wife's family.

(Translated by Google) I eat in a restaurant near Volvic in Auvergne lost on the old national road D943 between Volvic and the A89 in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes. A large private parking lot for cars and trucks is located on the other side of the road accessible via a pedestrian crossing. Google map indicates opening on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Arrived yesterday evening, I parked in the large car park for the night and came to drink a coffee this morning around 11am after washing in the fresh air behind the cabin (yes, I'm a driver). I was able to reserve the last available table, I was lucky 😅 I had the last table available this afternoon. To be sure of getting a table, I think you should make the reservation a little further in advance rather than relying on luck like here... The menu looks like what you would expect from an inn with simple, well-known and above all homemade dishes. My taste buds are in turmoil, with gourmet dishes and hearty plates. I tasted a homemade starter, a Cantal specialty, Pounti, I hesitated for a long time with the veal head with gribiche sauce. It was a great discovery, one slice would have been enough. A classic dish for me, a duck leg accompanied by small vegetables and homemade fries which would have been crispier with a second bath in oil (I live near the North, specialists in fries), a cheese platter with choice and a blueberry pie to digest it all... The superfluity present on the plates is not necessary, adding nothing in terms of taste.. I have a last coffee at the bar with the bill, a mixed rum is offered to me by the boss. A house-arranged rum (see photo) with orchard fruits in a large pot Le Parfait, here with vine peaches (the boss also makes a rum arranged with raspberries, perhaps I'll taste it next time passage). It was the apotheosis to finish this delicious and hearty meal. A little over €50/person for an aperitif, starter, main course, cheese, dessert and two glasses of wine (Côte d’Auvergne AOP white and red) included. I would come back. Note : - Welcome/service: 5/5 Very good welcome with a smile and efficient service. - Room: 4.5/5 It’s an inn in its own right, I like the decoration with old objects and old photos. - Plate presentation: 3/5 A few unnecessary flourishes that add nothing in terms of taste, however the plates are well filled. - Dishes: 4.5/5 A simplified star menu that changes menus, with good homemade dishes. It’s delicious and good, what more could you ask for. - Price: 4.5/5 Perhaps a menu is missing to reduce the final bill. Personally I got my money's worth, hearty meal, from the aperitif to the digestive including the dishes accompanied by good regional wines. I'm full. - Note globale : 4,5/5

The Cave of the Volvic Stone offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of stone extraction in France, dating back to the Middle Ages. Visitors can immerse themselves in captivating stories about the workers who toiled there throughout the 20th century. Although the cave itself is modest in size, it compensates with an engaging narrative and well-crafted short films that enhance your understanding of this fascinating site. The experience lasts about an hour, making it a perfect stop for those curious about local heritage.
Nicely done visit, with 5 steps within the cave to see an historical movie about the quarries and the water source. Very good storytelling and great scenery

Not that great of a show... If this is something you're into, then sure ! Go for it... but if not, there are other tours which are probably better. Basically it's video after video that you watch in different parts of the cave. But it could've been done so much better. The personnel was very friendly though.

Buy tickets in advance. Visit lasts around 1h. The cave itself is not that big, its more about the story behind it which was very nice. They put around 4 short movies. Température in the cave 10°

Good visit but as others have said it’s a relatively small cave and the tour is heavy on sitting and watching videos in French with English subtitles.

Just visited today. The stuff is nice, and the concept as well. But the visit seemed to be quite short and not so informative, for the price as well (7.8 eur full price adult ticket). Basically, you have a few key points where you stop and watch shorts movies. Not bad, but wish to have more interaction and information on the caves, especially knowing the history of the place. Movies could be watched at home, right. It's quite cold inside, so it's recommended to take a jacket

Imp. du Goulet

Imp. du Goulet is a significant site in Volvic, known for its underground river flowing through layers of basalt, andesite, and volcanic ash. The decision to construct the capture of Goulet was made in 1922 to channel this unique natural feature. This endeavor led to the emergence of Volvic water bottles in 1938. Today, with two factories, the Volvic water company plays a crucial role as an economic powerhouse for the city.

Day 3

Very nice owner, and a beautiful castle
Idalie W — Google review
Please note that this château isn't open all the time it's in line with tourists, so July and August. There's a cost of €10 per adult and €5 per child, cash only. Between the hours of 10-12h and 14-16h (if my memory serves for the afternoon times), we went in the morning and waited for the first guided tour. Our family visited in early August 2023. We loved the guided tour (this is how it works, guided or you can't enter), another French family was there and the guide, she was so lovely and translated in both French and English. I listened to both 😊 To say Château de Tournoël was derelict for 300 years it's amazing what has been lovingly restored/interpreted, but with the owners take on it, whilst having to follow key rules as it's a listed building. I was blown away by the historic documents!! Phenomenal. I'm such a geek! The guide was lovely and answered all our questions with enthusiasm and honesty. Thank you!! Although, my two wanted to return for a pizza party 😆 Children loved it as much as I did, and we were so happy that we got to visit with a really interesting room at the end of the tour!! Not to be missed!! I don't usually like those kind of aspects but the guide made it so interesting and made me want to get to know the owner 🥰👌🏼 I recommend this tour of château de Tournoël wholeheartedly!!

Alienor W — Google review
It's open to the public in July and August. It's a starting point for some nice walks in the area - parking can become full pretty quickly during weekends and summer months. There is an Auberge that serves food and drinks; its terrace is rather inviting.

Given that the museum is not very big, I had planned to spend about an hour there, but, totally carried away by the interest of the different exhibitions, it turned out that I still did not have finished when the museum closed… So I will have to go back! 😂 So a nice surprise. One of the most exciting museums in the Puy de Dôme department.

The Ukiyo-E temporary exhibition is of a refinement that takes you towards the Rising sun... The permanent exhibitions are also very interesting, on another side... I discovered this place this Saturday, and I left completely charmed. The collections are really very rich.. Well done to the Curator and all the staff! Camping Pierre et Sources - Onlycamp is situated in Volvic, offering a garden and garden views. It's conveniently located near attractions like Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral and Polydome Congress Centre. The camping site provides a terrace and free private parking. While some find the pitches a bit tight, the facilities are generally good with friendly staff. There's easy access to the town of Volviv, where visitors can enjoy its attractions and amenities.
Beautiful location. The camping pitches are big and terraced so everyone has a great view. Really friendly at reception. We're enjoying staying here. Plugs for sinks. Sounds wierd but that's a rarety :) also has a beautiful snack bar and chill out area.
Liam C — Google review
Nice levelled camping, if maybe a bit tight between some of the pitches. Toilet facilities are ok. Seems very popular, as it by far was the most busy camping during our French trip. Quite a few of the pitches lack shadow. It gets pitch-black when the lights are turned off at night. Some noise from the traffic, and the nearby sport fields.
Lars A — Google review
Friendly staff, affordable prices and beatiful views. Playground for kids and bread to order for brekfast.
Pekka M — Google review
Excellent little campsite right on the edge of the town of Volvic, quiet and with all the facilities you need, including a swimming pool. Friendly staff, you can even order your breakfast in the little cafe. All in all I'd love to return here for longer.
Steve B — Google review
Large pitch, well maintained site, 10 minute walk to Volvic with supermarket, boulangerie and a couple of take aways. Good location for visiting Puy de Dôme and the local caves.
Gapperelle — Google review
Basic but adequate campsite. Has a pool ( when it's open!). Water and waste arrangements not great for caravans. Toilets and showers dingey, dated and not too clean. Reception team helpful. Good location for Clermont ferrand and le Puy du Domme. Right next to a school and popular Park so noisy.........After I wrote this, on the day of departure the site assistant and another client approached me at 9am and stated that we were on his pitch ! The intimation was that we should move off quickly...the exchange was upsetting enough that we packed up quick and departed early. We had been told we could pitch anywhere. Definitely not going back there, Onlycamp and it's owner Huttoia are off of our pick list (Jocelyn on reception was great!)

We stayed for 3 nights leaving on 1st September. The site was quite and the pitches good and pretty level. Desk service was excellent

You will find a number of signposted walks to explore the area. The 'chemin des cascades' - picture - is quite nice. You can also walk to the Château de Tournoël crossing an old Roman bridge on the way. Most of it is in shaded tracks with some view points over the 'plaine de la Limagne' stretching up to the 'monts du Forez'.

(Translated by Google) To remain objective, we should rename the inn to the crêperie la chaumière. The name doesn't match the cuisine. The galettes/crêpes are good, but they remain simple galettes/crêpes: compared to some crêperies I've come across, the inn doesn't make you want to return. The view overlooks the city with a beautiful factory below. The castle is hidden by the trees. To conclude, we can stop there, we'll eat well (galettes/crêpes) with a view of the volcanoes, if the weather is nice.
