Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Kumano Hayatama Taisha is a renowned Shinto shrine and pilgrimage site located next to the Kumano River, surrounded by lush woodland. As one of the Kumano Sanzan shrines, it has stood on the riverbank since at least the 12th century. While its buildings have been reconstructed recently, it houses ancient religious artifacts dating back to the 3rd century, showcasing its enduring significance in Japanese folklore.
It’s a bit walk from the train station and most shops are closed for business but it’s still nice to visit. The temple itself is magnificent and the surrounding area is beautiful.
World E — Google review
Felt there was nothing extremely special about the Taisha. Conveniently beside another attraction, the shopping alley. But worth skipping even if you are passing by via car.
Kelvin L — Google review
One of the Kumano Sanzan (3 Grand Shrines of Kumano), it is the smallest but yet most accessible which is near to a railway station. The shrine is quite quiet on weekdays, and it does not have much to see other than the building itself. Would be a good start for the 3 Shrines Journey
Eric C — Google review
Free parking is available and part of the world heritage shrine. Could be a little bit touristy when the tour bus arrive.
Alex W — Google review
Lovely Shinto shrine. Small location. Popular but not crazy. Nice atmosphere. Well maintained.
Redfern R — Google review
A beautiful shrine breathed at the foot of the mountains. Definitely worth the visit if you're in Shingu!
Erica M — Google review
Great place. If you take the walk, be prepared for a slightly higher difficulty. The nature stones are really slippery in rain, but you can easily get close via bus. Main problem might be fog. I recommend the pagoda for a great photo of the waterfall

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
The journey to Nunobikino Falls offers a picturesque drive, though it may be narrow. Despite being in the year 2023, only two cars were encountered along a 20km stretch. Resting spots with breathtaking views await, surrounded by endless forests boasting crisp and unpolluted air. To reach the waterfall, one must traverse a somewhat trepidatious wooden bridge that shows signs of deterioration over time. The maintenance of this path seems to have been neglected in recent years.
(Translated by Google) The parking lot was along the road that climbed about 300 meters past the entrance to the waterfall. The road is narrow, so be careful not to pass each other. The scenery of the waterfall is amazing. I would like to come in autumn too.

The drive up here to the waterfalls is scenic, but a bit narrow. We just had 2 cars coming across in 20km. And this during GW 2023. Beautiful places to rest and enjoy the view. You will be traveling through endless forests with nice cool & clean air. The way to the waterfall starts by crossing a wooden bridge. Little scary, as there are already some holes and the wood looks little bit rotten already. Looks like the path wasn’t maintained during the last years… the waterfall is about 10 meters high and more of a slide than a fall. It will take you about 15 minutes to reach there. Follow the red rubber band marks and head more into the deeper forest. After some 5 minutes the regular way continues.

(Translated by Google) It is a very large and majestic waterfall, as it is included in the top 100 waterfalls in Japan. There is also a waterfall of the same name in Kobe, Nunobiki Falls, which is also included in the top 100 and is very famous and attracts many tourists, but the size of the waterfall is about the same as the two, or perhaps this waterfall is larger. Unfortunately, access is very poor, and although it says that it is 11km to the waterfall, it takes about three times longer than you would think because you have to go up and down the mountain path. Also, the information board is unhelpful, and although it is persistently telling you that Nunobiki Falls is here, once you arrive at the waterfall there is almost no information and there is no parking lot. After arriving at the spot to view from above, there are stairs, but I don't know whether to go down from here to the basin of the waterfall, or to go a little higher up to the torii path, or to cross the bridge on the right, so it is just unhelpful. There is a parking lot at the torii, but it is very far away and there is no signal, so I can't check it out. I probably should have gone down the stairs, but I ended up just looking at it from above.

(Translated by Google) A four-tiered waterfall with a total drop of 50m, it is one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. Although it is a large waterfall, it is a quiet waterfall where you can hardly hear the sound of the waterfall even when the water is rising. You can only see the third step from the bottom from the observation deck along the road, but you can see almost the whole picture, so you can enjoy the charm of the waterfall. There is also a promenade that takes less than 10 minutes to get to the bottom of the waterfall. The road conditions leading to the site are not bad, but there are usually fewer visitors. You can watch it in a calm atmosphere. There is space for road parking nearby, but the road is not very wide, so the limit is 2 to 3 cars. If you continue up the road past the waterfall, there is a wide area where you can make a U-turn.

I passed the entrance to the waterfall (it was like climbing a mountain while riding in a car), and after walking a little further, I saw a space with a torii gate on my left, so I parked the car there. I wanted to ride on a wide road even if it took a long time, so I took the route north from Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture and into Mie Prefecture. I thought I would take the same route for the return trip, but due to my lack of sense of direction, I ended up going to Yunoguchi Onsen and Iruka Onsen, where the trolley train runs. (Translated by Google) I came here for the roadside station stamp rally 🏍💨 This is a remote area in Mie, and it's in the middle of the mountains I went there to try the main dishes that I couldn't get anywhere else. I stopped in to try Niihime soba, but they also had the seasonal Sakura soba, so I ordered both 😎💦 Niihime soba is a citrus-flavored soba with Niihime (kabosu?). It's warm but refreshing 😉✨ Sakura soba doesn't have a fragrant flavor, but it has a clear cherry blossom taste 😅💦 This place is in the mountains away from the main road, so there aren't many people, which is nice. I was able to eat without it being crowded. The story of Itaya Kurobei was explained on a panel, but it was a bit surprising 😱 If you're interested, check it out on site 🏁 As a roadside station, the parking lot is large and clean, and the surrounding scenery is great, so it's a recommended place ✨ (Original)

(Translated by Google) I stopped off for a break on my way to Toro Gorge by motorbike. It's probably unusual for a roadside station to be named after someone like Itaya Kurobei. The building is small to medium-sized. In addition to local specialties and souvenirs and restaurants, there is also an exhibition of materials introducing Itaya Kurobei. It's a sad story, isn't it? But apparently, if you touch Kurobei's grave, your wish will come true. It was still before 10am, so the restaurants weren't open, so unfortunately I couldn't try the local food, but I did buy some souvenirs and a locally made juice, which I enjoyed on the terrace in front of the building. A pleasant breeze was blowing, allowing me to take a breather. The Itaya River flows behind the building, so it would be nice to take a break while watching the river flow. Apparently, this fried chicken bowl is made with fried chicken from Yamatoya, a famous local restaurant. I heard from an acquaintance that it tasted bad, so I tried it out of curiosity, but it really wasn't tasty. It's edible, but it's best not to. The fried chicken had a slimy, soggy texture overall, the rice was so soupy it tasted almost like rice porridge, and the jagged seaweed had a fishy smell. I've never tried Yamatoya's fried chicken, but based on reviews of the restaurant itself, it seems delicious. And yet, it wasn't tasty. The seasoning didn't blend well with the egg mixture, and it would be far better to eat them separately. I'd like to ask the owner and chef if they really thought this was delicious. I'll never have it again. Also, there were some small but noticeable imperfections, like the cashier handing me my change with one hand and the bowl still having grains of rice stuck to the outside. While it's unavoidable given the location, there were several small insects flying around the restaurant. If you are concerned about this sort of thing, this is a store you should definitely avoid. Maruyama Senmaida is a stunning traditional terraced rice field located in Yunoguchi Onsen. The road leading to the site is easy to navigate, but becomes narrow as you enter the mountain area. The rice fields, though empty after harvesting, are still impressive in number and are situated on the slope of a mountain. There are parking lots halfway up the mountain with restroom facilities and a rest area available.
The view is amazing and it changes with seasons. There is no walking path so you do need to share the road with car traffic.

Amazing place to be in the spring . Visited in April and the rice patties were filled with water. Spent there over 1 hour walking among the terraces and could have spent more time. There is a few designated parking areas (like 3/4 to the top and on the top as well, a toilet.

A beautiful traditional terraced rice field. Come here in April-May to see the planting season. Come in June/July/August to see the rice fields in full growth and come in the autumn to see the harvesting. There are a few places to park your car here but not many so it may be difficult to park. I recommend parking elsewhere and walking. There is a lovely hike nearby where from the top of the mountain you get a great view of the rice fields.

Went to see the Maruyama Senmaida rice terraces. Absolutely incomparable views, unforgettable experience! The hills are cut into terraces, fill them with rainwater, and plant paddy (rice). As scenic as it can get, when the coloured clouds and sun is also reflected from the water filled terraces; the sight offers great opportunities to the avid photographers or even amateurs. The landscape changes throughout the year, from the beginning of planting season where the terraces are water filled, then to the fields of green of the young rice plants growing up, and finally ripening to golden hues at harvest. These rice terraces are absolutely stunning! Definitely worth the trip out there.

(Translated by Google) I watched the first sunrise here on New Year's Day 2024. It is a magnificent coast with endless sand and gravel. After a four-hour drive from Osaka at night, we arrived just before 5:30 in the morning. The parking lot closest to the beach is already full. I had no choice but to go back the way I came, and although there was no restroom, I found a space in the parking lot for one car and finally calmed down. Relief! We warmed up in the car and waited for sunrise at 7:01. A little while ago, I moved to a parking lot with a toilet by myself. Everyone is gathering. There were many people going down to the beach, but we took our position on the embankment. Get your smartphone ready now! I had to wait for 20 minutes, so I'm glad it's not so cold this New Year's Day. Look closely at the place where the sea surface becomes brighter. It's fun to wait and I don't feel so cold. Around 7:00, the light gradually became brighter. "Ah! I saw the sun." "Really?" ``Sunrise! Sunrise!'' I turned on the video on my smartphone camera while muttering to myself. When the sun pops its head out a little, it rises in the blink of an eye. We pointed our smartphone cameras at them while muttering, ``Oh, oh, oh, that's so good.'' Although there were some clouds this year, I was able to take a pretty nice picture of the first sunrise. Congratulations, Happy New Year. May this year be a healthy and fun one! I prayed. Unagi restaurant
Shikaroku is a hidden gem that offers simple and traditional freshwater eel dishes. The restaurant is well-known among locals for its great food, and it's a popular spot for those looking to enjoy delicious unagi in a nice atmosphere. Visitors can expect super fresh eel served with omelettes, and the Japanese waitress speaks good English, making it an accessible dining experience for international guests.
Very well marinated and grilled unagi, definitely worth it for a once in while big treat.

Freshest Unagi I've had. Cosy dining area with friendly staff.

Quite local grilled eel restaurant which is near to the Hayatama Taisha. It is a little bit pricy than those in City but it is quite delicious, both the eel is grilled to a firm but soft texture, the sauce is not overwhelming so that the rice is not soaked in sauce. Additionally you can add the premium sansho (Japanese pepper) on the table which greatly enhanced the flavor.

(Translated by Google) In Kihoku and Kumano, several Dosan Musume stores, the former leading miso ramen chain, are still alive and well. Of course, Dosan Musume has many branches and many similar shop names. I had the miso ramen for 700 yen. The soup is made with chicken stock and miso sauce, the noodles are almost straight square noodles, and the ingredients are bean sprouts, corn, chopped green onions, and sesame seeds. It's a typical Tosan Musume miso ramen with a rich miso flavor and a bit of saltiness. The saltiness of the miso is pleasant, the oil is modest, the aroma is good, and the noodles and toppings are also good. I think it's a delicious cup. The hygiene inside the store is standard, and the price is reasonable these days. In terms of customer service, I was left with a good impression that the store owner and staff were friendly, polite, and efficient. I don't think it's outstanding, but the ramen is delicious, and the rest has the feel of a good old chain restaurant. The overall rating is 5 stars because it was delicious and there were no big chunks.

National Natural Monument Onigajō Cliff is a must-visit for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. The 0.7 mi. coastline features unique rock formations and cliffs, creating awe-inspiring cave-like scenes. Hiking in the area offers both challenge and exhilaration, although the terrain can be difficult to navigate in some areas. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended for visitors exploring this remarkable site. The erosion has shaped the rocks into otherworldly formations, offering incredible views of the sea.
On a sunny day, a visit is a must. There is a large free car park. You walk down (light slope) to the cliff edge. You then follow the shoreline observing the incredible wind eroded rock face. The best time is late afternoon with the soft western sun. I can imagine wedding photographers loving this location.

This national treasure is a must visit when traveling down the coast of the Mie prefecture. Be careful when hiking the cliff side as the rails aren't completely safe, recommended to bring gloves as the railing could be severely corroded due to the salt water, and when the weather is wet, wear hiking boots. We hike about 1/2 way and turned back due the high winds that were blowing after passing the crest of the peninsula. Wear down and/or a windbreaker as the windchill can get pretty cold during the winter months.

So hot and humid! I felt like jumping into the ocean, but I barely resisted. We didn't want to go back the trail because of the heat, and a local guy kindly told us a tunnel walkway that we could go around. The tunnel was so cool that we got totally refreshed. (Jul. 2025)

If you are in the area, this is a place you cannot miss. The walk through experience is unforgettable (extra unforgettable if you are afraid of height lol). There is no entrance fee, but it's a bit of walk/cycle to the entrance point, but it's definitely worth it. We parked our bicycle at the East gate, so we had to walk back from the West gate to East gate again, hence took us around 1 5 hours in total. The walk through is around 40 minutes one way, and the "path" is on the cliff, so you get the stunning view of the sea on one side, and on the other side you could touch and feel the rocks, and admire the amazing work of nature. We were there in September but it was still very hot, suggest to wear sunglasses and have sun protection if it's a sunny day.

A fun walk if you have a car. You can go back to the parking lot through a cool tunnel on the other side of the mountain.

Breathtaking cliffside with small caves carved out of rock. They have interesting patterns like pores of rocks in caves. The ocean is beautiful as it crashes white foamy waves into the rocks basking in golden sun. There's a long trek from one side of the cliffs to the other, with a shrine on a hill at the end.
Will Z — Google review
A great place to go for a lovely coastal walk along the cliffs. The water here is beautiful and the cliffs are amazing. You can really get a sense of the power of nature by looking at all the erosion and the bent hand rails from the power of the waves. I recommend walking fully to the end and back to experience the whole walk. There is plenty of free parking at the local visitors centre and they sell drinks and snacks should you get hungry or thirsty. It is a little busy at the start of the walk but the further you walk the less people you will see.

As a participant from outside the prefecture, I left late at night to make sure I was in time for the numbered tickets to be distributed, arriving at the P13 Disaster Prevention Park parking lot around 4:40 AM. A long line had already formed when I arrived, so I joined the line without any guidance and slowly made my way there for about an hour and a half. During that time, I saw many people walking to the festival behind us and wondered, "What are they doing?" However, when I actually arrived, I saw people walking behind us already receiving their numbered tickets and leaving. The official website clearly states, "One ticket per driver" and "Tickets cannot be sold to cars that are not at the ticket distribution center." Despite this, pedestrians were able to receive their tickets first, which felt unfair to participants who had dutifully lined up in their cars. For participants who arrived early from outside the prefecture and were following the rules, this management method was extremely disappointing and infuriating. I strongly hope that from next year onwards, the management system will be improved to prevent such unfairness from occurring. Shishiiwa is a remarkable rock formation in Mie Kumano, resembling a lion's head standing 25m tall and about 210m around. This natural monument is a result of ground uplift and coastal erosion, making it an intriguing sight for visitors. The surrounding Shichirimihama coastline offers spectacular views, adding to the allure of the area.
An interesting and beautiful rock formation. It was worth stopping by on our way to Ise.

Shishiiwa is located on the Kumano Kodo trail along the Iseji route, and its distinctive shape resembles a lion roaring towards the Kumano Nada Sea.

(Translated by Google) I came across this Lion Rock by chance while driving from Nara over a mountain pass toward Kumano. It's located along National Route 42, so you can see it from afar. When I got closer, it was even more impressive than I'd imagined, and it really did look like a lion roaring toward the sea. I later learned that Lion Rock is a national natural monument and, along with Onigajo Castle, is registered as a World Heritage Site. When you consider that it's a natural creation, its sheer scale is truly astounding. It's also interesting to hear that this rock is a "komainu" (guardian lion) of Ouma Shrine. There's something romantic about the shrine's guardian lion glaring out at the sea. Since I visited on a weekday, I was able to park a few cars, but the parking space isn't very large, so be careful. There's a coffee shop right next door, so be careful not to park in their parking lot without permission. It was a sunny day, and the Shichiri Mihama coastline beyond the rock offered a stunning view. I also recommend going down to the coast. Onigajo Castle and Hananoiwa Shrine are also nearby, so it would be a good idea to visit them together.

Ubuta Shrine, known as the birthplace of the fire god and home to many deities, has been revered since ancient times for bestowing the gift of children and ensuring safe childbirth. It is associated with Japanese mythology, particularly the story of Izanami Mikoto and her husband Izanagi Mikoto who are believed to be creators. The shrine's serene precincts exude a sacred atmosphere, enclosed by a stone wall and featuring a main shrine area paved with white stones.

When I visited Uta Shrine, I was impressed by its quiet and sacred atmosphere. Although the shrine is small, it has a deep historical background, and is especially known as the place where Izanami no Mikoto gave birth to Kagutsuchi, the god of fire. There is a place in the shrine grounds covered with white stones, and it is said that if a pregnant woman closes her eyes and picks up a stone, it will be a fortune telling that if the stone is long and narrow, she will give birth to a boy, and if the stone is round, she will give birth to a girl. Uta-jinja Shrine has its origins in mythology and is known as the god of safe childbirth and child-rearing.When a woman gives birth to a child, she picks up one of the white stones facing backwards within the shrine grounds. If it's a round stone, it's said to be a girl, and if it's a long, slender stone, it's a boy. When a child is safely born, a white stone is brought to Shichirimihama Beach and two pieces are given back. An annual festival is held on January 10th every year, and many families come to pray for the healthy growth and safe delivery of their children, and it is customary to eat a meal called ``Hohan'' (rice with soup, saury with bone-in sushi, and squid with green seaweed) in the shrine office in front of the shrine grounds. She was later buried at Hananoiwaya Shrine🌸, located along the coast. 😌 For this reason, the two shrines are considered a pair. Legend has it that Emperor Sujin had a dream in which he transferred the deity enshrined here to an island at the confluence of the Kumano River, Otonashi River, and Iwata River, which is where Kumano Hongu began. 😌 It's truly beautiful. Kiyo Falls can be spotted from a distance while traveling along the national highway. To find its approximate location, Google Maps proved to be useful for many visitors. The waterfall exudes an abundance of negative ions, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere that is highly rejuvenating. It is regarded as a remarkable power spot due to its unique qualities. However, one drawback is the absence of a designated parking area, forcing visitors to park alongside the road without the opportunity to capture picturesque moments.

A lovely natural beach. the sand is lovely and the sea is beautiful. The water can get a little deep quickly so care should be taken when swimming, especially with young children. Parking is available at the back of the beach but can be a little pricey during swimming season. You are able to BBQ on the beach which is nice but again the locals will charge you a few hundred yen for it which doesn't seem too fair but what can you do. Overall a great beach to visit.

Scenic spot
Tategasaki is a stunning rocky cliff that rises 70m above the water, boasting a circumference of 600m. The geological structure features numerous pillars known as joints, creating a phenomenon called columnar jointing. The hike to Tategasaki spans around 4.4-4.5 km round trip and offers breathtaking views of the ocean's blue hues and diverse landscapes along the way. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy hiking shoes due to muddy terrain and some inclines on the trail.
The path is a moderate hike for me. Some panting but don’t really need to stop. Slowing down is enough. Around 4.4-4.5 km around trip according to my watch. The first stretch was 1 km to the Tori/shrine. It was 80% decline and 20% incline to the sea. Then was up and down and up and down for another 1 km or so until you reach the loop which was claimed to be 300 meters but it turned out to be 500. Anyway, you have to continue to see the main attractions of this hike. It was worth the walk though. Total trip took me 1 hr and 35 minutes. Found lots and lots of deers. A couple of bride and groom came to take wedding photos??? Wow!! May be I am too old for this.

The hike to the viewpoint from the car park takes about 40 minutes each way. Beautiful views of Cape Tategasaki with the columnar joints. It’s easier if you have a car, but I didn’t so had to walk from Nigishima JR station (about 55 minutes walk). NB The entrance to the walk is about 100m downhill from the car park. Spectacular views up and down the coast. There was a shrine down by the water which I walked past.

This place was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. The color of the ocean is also this beautiful shade of blue as well depending on where you are on the peninsula. You'll need to drive to the parking lot here as there's no public transit nearby and then it's about a 3 mile round trip hike up and down the peninsula. You'll want decent hiking shoes because it can be wet and muddy in addition to the cliff side you'll need to wall through to get to see the amazing tategasaki rock! You'll see plenty of fishermen as well and unfortunately fishermen have a bad habit of leaving trash everywhere no matter what country you're in 😢. There's a small shrine here but it didn't look very well maintained. I came during December 30th and the weather wasn't too cold! Maybe at most 20C or about 65F - Mr. Rengoku

A terrific hidden scenic spot that is extremely remote and is not very well known even within Mie prefecture, let alone the rest of Japan. Park your car in the parking space on highway 311 and get ready for a full two hour trek for a spectacular view at the end. You cannot reach the huge rock and do not even try to because the drop will kill you. Do not go close to the edge if heights make you feel giddy. There are lot of ups and downs in between but shouldn't be a problem for people with normal fitness levels. Although great for a visit anytime of the year, I wouldn't recommend it on a rainy day.

Onigajo Center is a hidden gem that offers an enriching experience for those eager to explore the wonders of geological formations. The meticulously curated trailhead provides insights into the Earth's history, showcasing how landscapes have evolved over millions of years. Visitors can enjoy easy access and free parking, although it may soon transition to a paid attraction.
Amazing view of the sea also very delicious food 😋😋

Trail here is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about geographical and rock 🪨 formations. There is a lot of effort put into curating this trailhead to educate the public on the various changes that have taken place over millions of years. IMO, this doesn't lose out to more spectacular spots around the world. The variety of various formations and their maintenance are really well done. I'm guessing the ratings are lower due to Paris Syndrome than anything. Perhaps one day, when Onigajo Center becomes famous overnight, people will be rating this place 6 stars ⭐ out of 5 😆 Giving this place 4/5 stars due to completing the trail really early before 8.30am, so no clue as to how the cafes and shops here are like.

A neat souvenir shop with local snacks, crafts and t-shirts for purchase. Some mandarins on sale during the December month. Nice place to stop by before hiking Onigajo cliff and a nice rest stop after the hike before proceeding to the next destination.

Hamburger restaurant
Mos Burger Kumano is a pleasant and compact eatery that offers a drive-thru service. Despite the busy drive-thru, the restaurant itself was practically empty. They provided high chairs for young children, which was an essential consideration. The food at Mos Burger Kumano was both appetizing and freshly prepared. The staff members were amiable and efficient, willingly making an effort to comprehend non-Japanese speakers. Additionally, they had vegetarian burger alternatives available.
The staff were efficient and friendly. They went out of the way to understand us since we don’t speak Japanese.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Hokushou, a popular eatery in Kumano, is gaining attention for its delectable curry ramen. Priced at 750 yen, this dish is served alongside mini fried rice and salad for an additional 250 yen. The restaurant has managed to exceed its reputation by offering a flavorsome blend of curry soup with udon noodles. The stock used in the soup creates a delightful taste that keeps customers coming back for more.
Crazy delicious soba here, but their signature dish is the curry ramen. Basically one of the only places that serves it in Kansai. Service was very warm and the boss gave me a free bowl of rice to go with my leftover curry. My experience here made the rest of my day really positive. Do make a trip here if you are in the area.

Although the exterior is rustic, the interior is clean and has a relaxing atmosphere. The sashimi set meal is extremely fresh and has plenty of thickly sliced sashimi! The curry udon was also spicy and the soup stock was delicious. It seems to be a famous restaurant loved by local customers, and the parking lot fills up quickly during the day, so we recommend arriving early. Payment is in cash only. A restaurant where you can take a break in a location surrounded by nature. As others have said, I think people have different opinions about the store's response. It's probably a family business, with the father having previously run an izakaya, and the son taking over the business, with the mother and neighbors coming to help out. I felt that the son seemed to be speaking to the mother in a slightly harsh tone. I feel like it's because it's hard to manage and I'm so busy. I had a sashimi set meal made with fish caught at a nearby fishing port. I was surprised not only by the taste but also by the texture. The fish was not frozen and the knife was used to cut it, making it incredibly delicious. The miso soup with fish meat had a deep flavor, and the pickles that came with it were homemade. This alone made me want to have more rice. They told me that the mackerel sashimi set meal is not always available, depending on the catch. The woman sitting next to me ordered it and was eating it. I was a little jealous. The curry ramen seemed to be popular, and young people on tours were eating it with gusto while sweating. When I visited, it was fully booked, highlighting its popularity (noticeable by the three parking lots). The restaurant's specialty is its rare curry ramen. The spicy yet mild and rich soup perfectly coats the noodles, earning it rave reviews of "It's hot! It's spicy! But it's delicious!" I saw many customers sweating and engrossed in the ramen. Despite being a ramen restaurant, the sashimi set meals and sushi, made with fish caught at the nearby fishing port, are also highly praised for their exquisite quality. The firm texture of the fresh, unfrozen fish is particularly astounding, and on some days, rare fish like mackerel sashimi are even available. Choosing between curry ramen and fresh seafood is a challenge, making this a must-try restaurant in Kumano. It was an unusual lunch set combination, with two pieces of sushi and a mini salad for 250 yen. I sat alone at the counter, so I had a good view of the cooking. I couldn't see the brand, but they did add solid curry powder (commercially available). It was a bit disappointing, considering I ordered the most popular item at this highly rated restaurant. The taste was just as I expected! However, the ramen was piping hot and the complimentary lunch set was good, so I'm giving it this rating. Thank you for the meal. Akagi Castle Ruins, dating back to the Tenshou period around 1588, were fortified by Toyotomi Hidenaga's vassal Todo Takatora to quell an insurrection from Kitayama. The remains of this early modern castle are well-preserved and accessible via a narrow mountain road. Visitors can explore the ruins, which include a pavilion and public toilets, with a short walk from the parking lot.
(Translated by Google) ☆Remains of the early days of master castle builder “Todo Takatora”👀 The ruins of Akagi Castle that suddenly appear on the ridge around the summit of a mountain with a relative height of about 30m (about 230m above sea level) are more attractive than you can imagine😁 The trees around the castle have been neatly cleared and maintained, so you can get a good view of the territory and the surrounding area. Centering around the main castle at the highest point, the northern, eastern, and western walls are arranged in a Y-shape along the three ridges. The southern enclosure was placed on the flattened ground, and the southern enclosure was assumed to be a place for living, such as the barracks for the castle soldiers, as there were ``furnace ruins'' and ``building foundation stones.'' However, if the enemy attacked and invaded the southern enclosure, it was territory that could be intercepted all at once from the eastern and western enclosures, making for a solid stance! ️ ☆Toyotomi Hideyoshi Gohojo clan/Construction of the castle around 1589 (Tensho 17), the year before the conquest of Odawara, construction during the transition period from medieval castles to early modern castles (Oritoyo period castles), main castles etc. may have had foundation stones and structures such as watchtowers, relatively low-height fields in each castle. The stone walls are stacked in piles, and the wooden blocks are unfinished, but on the contrary, the rugged and rough natural stone masonry has a great atmosphere and is full of charm. In addition, each gate trace has multiple masu-gata tiger entrances and exit corners, and the ingenuity of setting up yokoya-kari.It is very moving to think that Todo Takatora constructed the territory. A strong castle built deep in the mountains, suppressing the Totsukawa Kaido and Kitayama Kaido roads, rich in copper and other mineral resources, and Kumano's timber resources are also important. Kitayama, where the fierce general Todo Takatora resided for about 11 years from 1585 (Tensho 13), a large-scale "Kitayama Uprising" broke out and was suppressed, and the stone-walled fortress "Akagi Castle" was built to govern the important base and maintain public order ⚔️ ☆The road in the middle of the mountain is a little narrow and has many curves, so if you drive carefully and arrive at the castle ruins, there is a large free parking lot with toilets right below the castle ruins. It takes about 5 minutes to climb up the castle road from the parking lot to the main castle, and it is a castle ruin that is very easy to attack. Exploring the Akagi Castle ruins is beautifully maintained and you can really feel the atmosphere and taste.

(Translated by Google) Akagi Castle (No. 155 on the Top 100 Castles Continued) is a flatland castle built on a 230m-high hill in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture. It is believed to have been constructed by Todo Takatora around 1589. After suppressing the Tensho Kitayama Rebellion, which broke out following Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Kishu, Todo Takatora built the castle as a base for governing the region. Its structure, which makes use of the ridge of a medieval mountain castle, combines with modern stone walls and gates, making it a valuable historical site that demonstrates a transitional period in castle-building technology. Another uprising occurred during the Keicho era, and the castle was abandoned in 1615 due to the One Castle per Province Law. It is now a nationally designated historic site, and its mystical stone walls have earned it the nickname "Castle in the Sky." On the day of your visit, collect your stamp and castle card at "Kumano Itaya Kurobe Village," then drive to the site. Please drive carefully as some roads are somewhat narrow. There is a free parking lot just below the east enclosure, and pamphlets are available. Although the castle grounds are small, defensive measures such as a series of square gates and horizontal arrow traps can be seen everywhere, and the rough-faced stone walls remain well preserved. Although it is in an inconvenient location, it is a mountain castle worth visiting. The Kumano City Kiwakozan Museum is a fascinating local history museum that offers a small but impressive exhibition on the 300 Iruka Boys - British prisoners of war who worked in the coal mines during the 1940s. Sadly, 16 of them lost their lives, and they are still revered by the community. The museum also provides information about a nearby graveyard where these fallen heroes are laid to rest.

Coal mining museum that includes a good, small display about the 300 Iruka Boys - British POWs who worked in the mines here in 1940s. 16 of them died and they are remembered and honoured by local people. Their graves are just a short distance away off the main road towards the river, look for Little Britain sign. A local woman, who lives in the UK, brings POW groups on reconciliation visits. If you can visit the museum and the graves - please do. We owe it to take a little time out if our holiday to remember these people.
