Sendai in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Sendai, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sendai offers a mix of history, nature, and city life, known as a “city of trees” for its leafy streets and large parks like Nishi Park and Jozenji-dori. You can explore sites linked to feudal lord Date Masamune, including the ruins of Sendai Castle and Zuihoden Mausoleum. The city is famous for local specialties such as grilled beef tongue (gyūtan) and sweet zunda desserts, and it hosts one of Japan’s most famous Tanabata festivals each August. Nearby attractions like Matsushima Bay, Akiu Onsen, and Sakunami Onsen make it a convenient base for day trips around Miyagi Prefecture.
With favorites like Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium, Zuihōden (Grave of Date Masamune), and Serisoan Sendai-Ekimae, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mori and Serisoan Sendai-Ekimae so you can get the best taste of Sendai while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
If you're looking for an unforgettable aquatic experience, the Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium is a must-visit destination on the eastern side of Sendai. This impressive facility boasts around 100 expansive tanks filled with stunning marine life from across the globe, all swimming gracefully in pristine waters. Guests can immerse themselves in educational exhibits about these fascinating creatures and even engage in hands-on activities like feeding penguins or snapping close-up photos with dolphins.
Honestly, I went in with very low expectations. There weren't many people when we went. Honestly, it doesn't give you any thrills like an aquarium until you get in. But it exceeded my expectations. It's honestly beautiful. It's incredibly beautiful. It has more animals and different habitats and areas for activities. Even though the seal/dolphin and macaw parrot show is free, you have to get it at the right time. You can find that time schedule in the leaflet. And there's a shopping complex and a restaurant where you can get souvenirs. Overall, The best thing is that we can buy tickets online. If you're coming to Sendai, don't miss this one. Sooooo perfect 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰if you like more to watch please subscribe my YT channel- Yasi N Anji

The aquarium is better than expected, it is large. Prepare to spend at least an hour here. Be aware of dolphin shows and penguins feeding time. Free parking on site. Souvenirs are nice! Recommend people visiting Sendai to visit the Aquarium.
Maggie C — Google review
I actually really enjoyed it here! Great way to spend a few hours. Of note even if you buy tickets in advance you still have to go through the ticket line to get a qr code.
ウルフJamie — Google review
Compact aquarium which is easy to navigate. All you need to take note is their 4 different showtimes and be physically present at the right place to watch the shows. All in together, you probably need about 3/4 day to catch all the shows. Spend quite a long time watching the staffs feed the cute little penguins, which are always fighting over fishes in their clumsy cute ways. Bought my tickets using Klook, which made ticket redemption easy. Just click the link and let the staffs guide you what to do next as it is all in Japanese.
Kang N — Google review
I brought my family here and we had such a fun time. You get an up and close view of the marine life and various other animals. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We will definitely be returning.
Aaron — Google review
A well designed aquarium. It's not very big and might only take you 1 - 1.5 hours. But it has its charms.
Oscar C — Google review
Great aquarium with lots of exhibits, the “dolphin show” was really lacking and was overtaken by the seal, so Aomori dolphin show still is the best and soooo much cheaper.
Jonathan G — Google review
I enjoyed the aquarium, easy to access and installations are clean. I only left with some mixed feelings about the birds, iguana and caiman cages/exhibitions. They are terrible and tiny for their needs. I hope in the near future this could be fixed

Mitsui Outlet Park Sendai Port is one of the two outlet malls in Sendai, offering a wide range of out-of-season brand-name goods at discounted prices. The mall provides a park-like atmosphere, making it an ideal place for both shopping enthusiasts and those looking to spend a leisurely afternoon. However, reaching the outlets without a car can be challenging as they are located on the outskirts of Sendai.
Had alot of shopping fun here. Cold weather and good variety of food choices. Able to bought some shoes with great deal price.

Branded factory outlet besides international brands as well as Japanese local brands, from time to time, there will be added value promotions. It also provides various types of foods and good taste. Personally feel that this Sendai outlet much better than the KLIA outlet in terms of structure and environment.
YF T — Google review
I visited a few shops to buy a down jacket. There's a good selection of shops from local brands to international ones. It isn't far from the Nakano Sakae Station. It took me 7-8 mins.

Compare to other outlets, they don’t really have discounts. I wouldn’t go again, I would rather go to the one in Tokyo or Fukuoka.

With a seating capacity of 23,000, it offers an exhilarating atmosphere that captures the essence of Japan's beloved pastime.
Very cool experience to watch a baseball game! Only stadium I've been to in Japan though so no points of comparison but seeing the Ferris wheel was interesting & all the Japanese foods & rituals made the game experience great :)

Lots of fun! The stadium, bathrooms, and walkways were clean. A lot of food choices. There were also several different souvenir shops so they weren’t overly crowded. Easy to get in and find your seats. Amenities were all easy to access.

Formally Kleenex Stadium. This is a fairly large, family friendly, clean stadium. Transportation to the stadium drops you off right off in front of the stadium on game days and nearby on other days. The Sendai track and field stadium is located right next door making for a very wide, open venue with a very diverse crowd.

A very big shopping mall. There are a lot of stores and restaurants in it.

Plenty of shops in the same building as the station. Good for a stroll if you have some time to kill before your next train. A couple of cofee places (famous american franchise included) and quite a few restaurants (go to the first basement if you want more options). In my opinion it is just not much as a department store, many clothes shops that I do not like a lot, but I guess that depends on your personal preference.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Nestled on the scenic slopes of Mt. Yagi, Yagiyama Zoological Park is a delightful destination for animal enthusiasts and families alike. Established in 1965, this charming zoo showcases around 600 animals from 115 different species, thoughtfully arranged by their natural habitats. Just a short ten-minute journey from Sendai Station, it’s easily accessible via the Yagiyama Zoological Park Subway Station.
If I remember correctly, the ticket was about 459 yen and it is definitely worth it. There are a good amount of animals within the park and they are all very well kept. If you are hungry, there a quite a few places where you can get food within the zoo. There’s a cafeteria style stores and desserts stand.
Rachaphon W — Google review
I can say that this is a great zoo that offers a variety of animals, and their exhibitions are well-suited for wildlife needs! All the animals seem happy and healthy, being friendly with visitors. They aren’t shy and will come closer to humans! 😂 The ticket is really cheap! Even if you’re a foreigner, they don’t charge you extra. For those coming by subway on the Tozai-line, you can walk to the west gate and use the elevator to go up to the 5th floor. You'll arrive at the zoo entrance easily! !
Kritsakorn M — Google review
There are some amazing parts of this zoo, and some worrying parts. The general areas are well kept and there’s some amazing planting and structuring done for most animals. There’s a nice cafe and everything to check in and every interaction we had with staff was excellent. There are some honestly woefully sized areas for some of the animals, though. The apes have what are realistically tiny cages. It’s no wonder they got quite unhappy and rowdy at one point. There were large birds like eagles in cages that would normally be reserved for small birds. This surely can’t be okay for them. Again, most of the enclosures were close to or appropriately sized for a zoo. They’re doing quite a bit of work at present, and nearly a quarter of the zoo is being worked on. Hopefully this space is for some of the animals whose enclosures are currently terrible. Again, lots of great things about the zoo, but I was a bit shocked by some of the spaces for animals.
Ryan P — Google review
Yagiyama Zoological Park is located on the west side of Sendai city, offers an accessible day out for families and tourists. To reach the park, simply hop on the Tozai Line and disembark at Yagiyama Zoological Park station. Upon arrival, My initial impression was that the park feels a bit dated. The facilities and overall setup appear to have weathered the years. Despite the slightly smaller enclosures compared to other zoos I’ve visited, the residents seemed lively and well-cared-for. One highlight worth catching is the parrot and eagle demonstration. The staff engage with these magnificent birds, guiding them through impressive aerial maneuvers. It’s a delightful event for visitors of all ages. In summary, Yagiyama Zoological Park may not be the flashiest zoo around, but it’s a decent spot for a family outing.
Javin Y — Google review
Honestly the zoo didn't look exactly well maintained - some animals were kept in dirty and worn spaces with strong smell. I even saw some racoons with patchy fur which was disheartening. But with how cheap the entrance fee was, I couldn't say I was actually surprised. 😕
Oscar C — Google review
Yagiyama Zoological Park is an absolute gem! From the moment you arrive, you're greeted with a well-maintained and thoughtfully laid-out park. The animal enclosures are spacious and appear to prioritize the welfare of the animals, offering clear viewing opportunities for visitors. The variety of species is impressive, keeping both children and adults captivated. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the overall positive experience. We especially appreciated the clear signage and helpful map that made navigating the park a breeze. It's a fantastic place for a family outing, offering a wonderful balance of education and entertainment. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area!
Frogstud — Google review
It’s not big but you can find various kinds of animals. But some area is under renovation now. The monkey don’t like the biscuits you can feed them anyway🙂
Tanis L — Google review
The kids love the place so much. There is a wide range of various animals. Entrance isn't very expensive. If you are in a family and one of the parents is a student then your family enters for free. However, the animals seem a bit depressed, especially the penguins!

Soba noodle shop
Located on the first floor of Sendai Station right inside the ticket gate. Vending machine outside takes your order and spits out a ticket; hand the ticket over to the counter and wait for your number. Super fast, lots of different types of soba to choose from, and staff was accommodating for a non-Japanese speaker like me, but if you know the order process you don't have to talk to anyone. Had fried chicken soba and the batter on the chicken had a godly crunch to it. Honestly, for the price point (less than $5) it was a top pick. If I ever roll through Sendai Station again, I'm going out of my way to grab a quick bite here.
S1apSh0es — Google review
A good spot to get a quick satisfying meal at the train station, the soba noodles are quite good and they also have seasonal menu to pick from. There is enough variety for different preference and the service is quick and efficient.
Tracy L — Google review
Ate here many times. As a vegetarian, zaru soba with mixed tempura (onion, carrot, shiso) and some inari (listed in English as 1 or 2 piece fried tofu) was a good option for me. Order and pay outside on the machine, pick up and eat inside.
Anna B — Google review
You can enjoy Soba just up to 500 yen. It's cheapest in the station.

Serisoan Sendai-Ekimae is a popular restaurant in Sendai, known for its delicious dishes and convenient location near the station. The restaurant offers private rooms for a relaxing dining experience. One visitor enjoyed the seri hotpot, which came with tofu, gobo, and chicken thigh. Although it was fully booked for the week, visitors can make reservations through Hot Pepper. The staff are friendly and accommodating, creating a lovely ambience for diners to enjoy their meal.

(Translated by Google) Sendai hot pot dinner Seri nabe, which I didn't know was a specialty when I visited 10 years ago My friend who lives in Sendai recommended this restaurant for Seri Nabe, so I made a reservation and came here. At the entrance, put your shoes in a public bath-like shoe box and enter. Sendai duck seri hotpot (1 serving) ¥2,980 Sermon and raw seaweed dip ¥740 Grilled puffer fish milt ¥1,480 Nanko plum tempura ¥820 Salted sea squid ¥680 All-you-can-drink Japanese sake Seri hotpot has a good bitterness and the sweetness of the duck fat, making it a delicious dish for adults. It's good that the leaves and stems have different textures and tastes. Raw seaweed is a good accent for soaking the seri. The rare plum tempura has a flavor that goes well with alcohol. . Immediately changed to sake lol The salted sea bream fish tastes quite like the sea. I like the sweat to some extent, but it was a little hard for me. The thing that surprised me the most was the blowfish milt grilled. I've eaten a lot of Shirakoyaki in the past, but I've never had one with such a creamy texture. . The alcohol keeps going lol The contents of the all-you-can-drink Japanese sake menu are quite extensive. As a tourist, I'm glad that Miyagi and Tohoku have an abundance of alcoholic beverages. Seating is only in private rooms, with tables and tatami mats. There seems to be quite a number of seats. The interior of the store has a modern and stylish Japanese atmosphere reminiscent of the Meiji era. The exterior is beautiful and it's easy to find because it's in a restaurant building. Make a reservation and come to the store at 7:30pm. (Translated by Google) It was my first time having Japanese parsley hotpot. I was working in Sendai, and I was with a coworker. We decided to have something a little more special. We chose this restaurant because it had a beautiful, luxurious interior and the staff were very welcoming. Of course, they had the Japanese parsley hotpot, but they also had some unusual dishes like Sendai's classic triangle-shaped deep-fried fishcakes, and fried Nankou plums, so I wanted to try everything. I also enjoyed the raw oysters, which I was wondering if they'd be available this season. The Japanese parsley hotpot was so delicious that I devoured it and forgot to take photos. I'd love to return to Sendai for another delicious Japanese parsley hotpot. (Translated by Google) 2024.12 First visit Located in front of Sendai Station, the transportation is super convenient and it is only a few minutes' walk away! There is a shoe cabinet area as soon as you enter the door. The environment is clean and tidy. Two people can also enjoy a small private room, which is very private and satisfying. Although the menu is all in Japanese, the waiter is friendly and the ordering process is smooth. I ordered the signature water celery pot, which has a fresh soup and a lighter taste. It may be due to personal habits, so I think it is a bit ordinary, but it is still fresh and delicious. I especially recommend the fried oysters a la carte, which are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the grilled fish, which is full of fragrance and memorable. The other side dishes are also very delicate and well matched. The overall service is attentive and thoughtful, the staff pays attention to needs at any time, and the dining experience is comfortable. The store supports credit card payment, and checkout is convenient. Overall, the environment, service and dishes are satisfactory, it is worth a visit, and I want to visit again next time I come to Sendai! (Translated by Google) This is just my personal opinion. I visited for a weekday lunch, and the service was poor. The food was also not to my liking, perhaps due to poor choices. The salad dressing was a bit off, the Tsukimi meatballs were too hard (lol), and the prices were disappointing. I guess this is a restaurant that caters to tourists at the west exit of Sendai. Personally, I didn't even want to give it a star. I only had one beer and left. Thank you for the meal. They offered DIY oyster BBQ. And I had the all-you-can-eat(¥3,200). It’s more expensive than I had at Matsushima bay, but their oysters were really big! However I felt it’s not as fresh as imagined. Some shells were open before grilled(Did it mean it’s dead?), and I found few oysters were totally black inside(Did it mean it’s polluted?). That looked very disgusting...

(Translated by Google) My husband and I visited for the first time because we wanted to eat oysters. The price was very different from what everyone said in reviews, and had gone up quite a bit. The all-you-can-eat option on weekends was ¥5,000 for adults. We got a plate of 1kg for ¥2,500, and the hot, freshly grilled oysters were definitely delicious. They also have ponzu and soy sauce, but they felt a little thin, so I recommend bringing some shichimi pepper or lemon juice with you. I think this is a good place for people who just want to eat their fill of oysters without the ambiance. They cost ¥2,500 for 10 oysters per kilogram, so if you're eating more than 2 kilograms, the all-you-can-eat option is a better deal. A bucketful of about 4 kilograms is more than enough for a man. I didn't choose the all-you-can-eat option, so I ordered two plates of 1-kilo oysters, which came to 5000 yen. The oysters looked very large, but actually, the meat inside each oyster wasn't very big. Overall, though, I thought it was just average. If you enjoy eating a lot, I believe it will satisfy you. However, we were the only customers, which made the atmosphere feel a bit strange. But the staff who served us were very enthusiastic, attentive, and friendly. I wondered if we could eat one child's portion, but the bean sprouts were crisp and the wakame seaweed with dressing was delicious! The owner smiled and told the child, "It's additive-free, so you can eat it with peace of mind." Who knew steak could be so delicious with mustard soy sauce. Steak and vegetables for this price. Thank you. Self-service? Sure! In fact, I helped clear other customers' plates. I wanted to help more. In this day and age, people who think that service is a given because they're paying money are not suitable. He continued to run the place by himself even after his wife passed away. Day 2

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Aoba Castle Honmaru Hall (Miyagi Prefecture Gokoku Shrine Event Venue), then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Kotodai Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Aoba Castle Honmaru Hall, perched atop a hill, is a national historic monument that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Originally founded in 1610 by the legendary Date Masamune, this site was strategically chosen for its defensive advantages and has since evolved into the well-organized city layout we see today. Although much of the castle was lost to fire and wartime destruction, remnants like stone walls still evoke its former grandeur.
Stunning view of Sendai. We stayed up there a while just enjoying the view 🥰 and left only because it got too cold.

Excellent option to visit some tourist attraction here in Sendai, there is no charge to enter to see the Aoba castle, there is a souvenir shop and a store to buy food at the top, although as a recommendation if you are going to climb it walking be in a bit of condition or in case of elderly adults bring a wheelchair, the views of the city are incredible 🏙️ 🌃 🌆 ⚔️ 🏰 🇯🇵

I was unfortunately disappointed with my visit to Sendai Castle. Hardly any elements have been restored. Therefore, there is not much to discover. There are lots of parking lots on the mountain. The shrine is quite beautiful and the view over the city is also quite good. However, the long journey on the tourist bus is not necessarily worth it.

Ruins of the Aoba castle: now also available with VR tour to get an idea of what the castle used to look like. On the grounds, there are plenty of places to have a bite, or look at the scenery (you can see as far as the ocean!). It's quite easy to walk up to the Aoba Castle grounds. Starting from the Sendai museum, there are several signs indicating the different routes you can take. Each are around 1km long.

This place is huge with lots of spots (museums, gift shops, food stalls, temples, etc.) and it's free! The view of Sendai City from above and the Date Masamune statue are the main attractions of this place, imagining the sunset from up here must be very beautiful! You can get here via the Sendai loople for 260¥ one way, or you can walk from the Tohoku University Kawauchi campus for about 15-20 minutes.

We stopped at the Sendai Castle area. We took the city bus and we would suggest for you to pay the day's pass instead of paying one stop with th IC card. Spend the day and be ready to hop on and hop off at the interesting sights. We went on Monday and unfortunately many of the sights were closed. The other downside was there were lots of tourists and not enough busses. Otherwise an ideal transportation as there are many ups and downs and quite difficult to walk the distance.
Susan L — Google review
The ruin itself was nothing spectacular. The view of Sendai was nice. It is worth to make a bus stop to have shot stop. But it is not worth to take a taxi to visit this site. It cost us 2000 Yen one way from city because the main entry was closed.
K C — Google review
Provides a nice view of the city but on the castle site itself is nothing to see except two statues. The shrine next to it is only okay too. The statues are facing north, meaning taking a picture from the front is going to be against the sunlight, very unfortunate.

Historical landmark
The Equestrian Statue of Date Masamune is a significant landmark in Sendai, founded by the powerful samurai feudal lord around 1600. Known as the 'One-Eyed Dragon,' Masamune's influence can still be felt in his old domain. The former mountain top castle and his final resting place at Zuihoden, a mausoleum featuring rare Momoyama architecture, are particularly noteworthy.
Must-go place in Sendai. I travel to Sendai for 3 days and here is a good spot. But it’s super cold in this season, so prepare your thick jacket and gloves. It was a good hiking tho Date Masamune was a very powerful warrior that day.
Hoai N — Google review
The Equestrian Statue of Date Masamune is one of Sendai’s most striking landmarks and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city. Perched on a hill within the beautiful grounds of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), the statue captures the power and charisma of Date Masamune — the “One-Eyed Dragon” who founded Sendai. The statue itself is stunning, especially with the backdrop of the city skyline and mountains. It’s easy to feel the historical weight of the place, imagining what Sendai might have looked like centuries ago under Masamune’s rule. The viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views of the city, particularly around sunset or in autumn when the leaves turn fiery red.
Wisanu T — Google review
The equestrian statue of Date Masamune in Sendai is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Set on the hilltop of Sendai Castle ruins, it overlooks the whole city with a stunning panoramic view. The statue itself — Masamune riding proudly on horseback, wearing his crescent-moon helmet — perfectly captures his strength and legacy. Visiting at sunset made it even more beautiful, with the golden light shining on the bronze figure and the city below. A must-see spot that embodies the spirit of Sendai.
Masaki K — Google review
Snowy afternoon spent up at this statue. Caught the city loop bus up from the mausoleum. The bus was crowded but worth it. Lots of photo opportunities as well as some local actors who must have been employed to dress in historical gear for visitors to take photos with. Food options are available up there. Great views over Sendai.

Zuihōden, the final resting place of Date Masamune, stands as a testament to the rich history of Sendai and its most influential feudal lord. Constructed in 1637 by his successor, Lord Tadamune, this mausoleum showcases stunning Momoyama architectural style with vibrant carvings that capture the essence of the Edo Period.
June 24, 2025 Rain this morning but bus ride from Sendai Station no problem. Short walk up hill to Zuihoden. It was like going back in time
Lawrence G — Google review
Zuihoden was originally built in 1637 but due to war and other reasons, the current worship and memorial shrine was rebuilt in 1979 and repaired in 2001. It is the building complex of the burial chamber of Date Masamune, feudal lord and founder of modern Sendai city, and his heirs. The building complex is rich colorful splendid in design and elegantly painted, while outside roads to the Zuihoden are surrounded by tall trees and quasi forest. It seems that Zuihoden is more attractive, especially for foreign visitors, for area outside the worship hall, such as forest-style roads which have stylish beauty. On the contrary, the worship hall and grave inside is rather contemporary rebuilt with historical importance and meaning perhaps for local residents, but it may be a stranger historical anecdote which is less attractive for foreign visitors or even out-of-town Japanese visitors for remote association of the local lord. This reflection and comment are based on observation that fewer visitors took photos in front of Zuihoden worship hall and nearby building, while most visitors did have photo taking at forest-style roads. Compared to other tour attractions in Sendai, Zuihoden probably has the best bilingual explanation postings at its site, and it does help foreign visitors for viewing. The entrance ticket for Zuihoden is $570 Yen, although it can be reduced to $460 Yen for Sendai Loople ticket holder.

Good and light exercise uphill. Grave of Data Masamune along with more information of the next few generations of his family members. 🪦 Most of the buildings were destroyed during WWII, and these replicas are well preserved and restored post-war. English descriptions are mostly available.

The fact that all of this site is a mausoleum for Date Masamune is astounding. Date Masamune, a powerful samurai and daimyō, who founded the city known as sendai. He was also so important that 20 people committed junshi upon his death to follow him into the afterlife. Unfortunately, many of the structures was destroyed during the firebombings in WW2, but have later been restored. Many of the buildings bears amazing color schemes and are filled with beautiful figures and decorations. The entrance fee was about 570 yen. There are also goshuin available here and they are nice. Very much recommend coming here.

It was majestic, both at the day and in the night (there was a Tanabata event, so it opened at night. Usually it opens until 4 or 5 pm I think). The buildings were majestic, and the museum, although small, was packed with knowledge. I am especially intrigued with how they could try to make the face of Masamune Date (and some other Date descendants) from his skull only. Anyways, it's a great, tranquil, majestic place to visit.
Valerie V — Google review
A informative grave of a very noble lord. The museum was only in Japanese, Chinese and Korean and so I didn't enter as I didn't want to translate everything. However the general atmosphere was relaxing, the grave was impressive and the cost was cheap. Fair warning, it's on a steep hill, if you have COPD or anything that makes walking uphill a task. Consider wisely! There is a carpark that's free and takes about half the hill away.
Conor M — Google review
Beautiful in autumn with the changing colours of the trees. It’s remarkable that it was re-built with so much care and eye for detail(s). When in Sendai, you should definitely visit
Stephan F — Google review
Well-worth a visit, Zuihoden is a beautiful and relaxing place, the entire site being the mausoleum of Date Masamune. Some buildings were reconstructed after the originals were burnt in the 1940s, but still lovely. This place is also not crowded with hoards of people; it's easy to walk around at a leisurely pace. Despite ot being early August, there were (surprisingly) no mosquitos either!

Nestled in the heart of Sendai, the Sendai Mediatheque is a contemporary cultural hub that seamlessly blends a library, art gallery, and theater into one stunning glass-walled structure. This architectural marvel not only showcases an impressive design with its transparent facade but also serves as a barrier-free space promoting interaction among diverse communities. Visitors can explore various resources including books, audio-visual materials, and films while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere created by its unique layout.
We are glad we took the time to visit this building. We were able to visit Level 7, 5 and 1. Level 7, were studio rooms, but we saw pictures of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami on the building and Sendai. Very educational. We saw photo galleries in Level 5. The photos were from local artists and were worthy of a visit. Level 1 was also an interesting decoration. We learned about the architect and interior designs for every floor. It is the most interesting building to visit.

An architect by Toyoo Ito, born in Seoul, South Korea in 1941. This is a representative example of a building that blends in with its surroundings. Starting in the 1990s, he gradually moved toward a style that was more experimental in structure, with sensual exterior and interior spaces, most notably the "Sendai Mediatheque."
Platinum G — Google review
This building is undoubtably a visual orgasm for architects. There are many free spaces that we can use for relaxing. However, for those who want to find a place to work with laptop, this place is not recommended at all. No free electricity plug even in the cafe area. There is a design shop at the ground floor selling fancy stuffs.

Sendai Mediatheque is located right next to Jozenji-dori. It is a versatile building that serves as both a public library and an exhibition space. When I passed through Jozenji-dori, the unique architecture design of this building attracted my attention. From the outside, it appears as a massive glass box with intriguing, unconventional structures within. But step inside, and you’ll realize that these structures are actually elevators. It’s a clever blend of form and function. While it is free to enter, during your exploration, please remember that many visitors are quietly immersed in their reading or study sessions. Please keep the noise level down and respect their peaceful experience.

Really good place to both read and quietly relax if you want a library. There are plenty of seats with power source so you can charge your phone here. All the books are mostly in Japanese. There is a cafe and shop that you get stationary.

One of the most important works of contemporary architecture in Japan and maybe Toyo Ito's best project. Fantastic interiors and atmosphere, do not hesitate to visit the interior, you just need to ask for a badge and the entry level.

I must admit, I would’ve walked passed this building if it wasn’t for its architecture. It caught my interest, which prompted me to check it out and find out that it was a community center. Good place to check out their library, some of the art they have displayed, and also views of Sendai on the top floor. The elevator can take you to the parking area, plaza, library, gallery, and even studio. The people there were also friendly.

There is unfortunately no galleries on the Sunday of September 21st (2025). I came for the hopes that there would be galleries as mentioned from the website; although floor 5 and 6 was unavailable for visitors. Correspondingly, floor 2-3 was unavailable as well. I am under the assumption that maybe it was due to the fact I visited late at night at 19:00.

We went here for the Sendai Jazz Festival Sept 9/10. Great show. Super good bands. Fun strolling around with all the good trucks.

A great and spacious park where lots of events are regularly held. It is close to the Namboku line subway station (Kotodai Koen Station), hence making it very accessible.

A small little park with a nice variety of greenery. We visited during the Yosakoi festival, so there were plenty of festivities and performances from kids all ages. There were also lot of stalls during the festival selling food and goods.

Akira is a great guy! He speaks a bit English and is very welcoming to foreign customers as well. They have a huge selection of whisky to try out besides a good lot of cocktails. The atmosphere is quiet and good with some light jazz in the background. Would recommend coming here. Especially to try out some very rare Japanese whisky!

Izakaya restaurant
Restaurant
Jiraiya is a renowned izakaya in Sendai, named after a Song-era fantasy epic. The restaurant specializes in charcoal-grilled kinki (rockfish) and offers a cozy atmosphere where patrons can enjoy sake while nibbling on delicious dishes at the bar. Located on a side street with a distinctive giant red lantern marking its entrance, Jiraiya is known for its robatayaki, including grilled seafood and vegetables.
Chanced upon this local specialty robatayaki izakaya on tabelog and it was one of the best decisions of my trip. We didn't manage to make a reservation ahead of time, but managed to get counter seats for 4 when we walked in on a friday evening. Staff were very patient with our very limited Japanese, an English menu was provided and when the food arrived, staff kindly explained each dish and how to eat it. We ordered the grilled Kinki (rockfish), grilled chicken, cod, onigiri, tamago and miso soup to share. At the end of the meal, the shop owner offered to make Kinki soup from the fishbones/skin and it was a nice end to the meal. Paid about ¥5000 per person which is the standard for izakayas all around.

Hands down best seafood bbq place in all of Japan.
Yuzo Y — Google review
Overall very disappointing even though I had very high expectations. The restaurant forgot items in my orders and I had to wait over 40minutes for a replacement. All the time, the chef was serving other customers. While they were apologetic after, I’m surprised at how a well rated restaurant can be so careless. Second shock - I was charged 40% higher than menu price for a grilled fish which the waitress said was normal. However, the waitress did not informed me during order that the item would cost more than listed price. It is bad faith and practice which I’ve not encountered at Japanese restaurants before and unsure if it is done only to foreigners. Lastly, the overpriced and initially forgotten grilled fish was overcooked and charred. Suggest that you visit other better restaurants with better value.

(Translated by Google) ⭐️🐟️⭐️🐟️⭐️ If you're looking to enjoy the flavors of Tohoku in Sendai, Jiraiya is a must-visit. You'll be immediately captivated by the sight of the vibrant red yoshiji fish lined up in the glass display case. Each fish, slowly grilled over charcoal, boasts fragrant skin and plump, fatty, and juicy flesh. In Tokyo, yoshiji fish is usually found only at high-end restaurants, but enjoying it in Sendai is a luxury you can only find here. The sashimi platter also includes whale sashimi, boasting a unique umami flavor and texture. Other delicacies, such as salted squid and dried mullet roe, are also available, making them the perfect accompaniment to sake. Pairing them with local brews like Hakurakusei and DATE SEVEN further enhances the richness of the ingredients. The fusion of the aroma of charcoal grilling and the robust flavor of local ingredients makes this a sophisticated hideaway beloved by both tourists and local regulars. (Translated by Google) November 2025. Auspicious Day Jiraiya Charcoal Grill & Mountainside Cuisine Assorted Sashimi Kichiji Half Grilled Kinka Mackerel Grilled Beef Tongue Grilled Rice Ball (Sendai Miso) Kinki Bone-Cured Soup It's been a while since I've been to Jiraiya A restaurant serving Miyagi's local cuisine I made a phone reservation on the day, expecting no luck, and the service was amazing. They asked for my order in advance when I made the reservation. I ordered a sashimi platter and kinki. When I mentioned I'd be arriving late, they offered to serve me a separate portion for one person. The restaurant is located in the basement of Kokubuncho, founded in 1963, and will be a 62-year-old establishment as of 2025. The atmosphere is great. First, a bottle of beer. The staff poured my first glass, which I was happy about. It's rare to find a restaurant that pours you your first glass; it really shows hospitality. By the way, they also poured my first glass of sake. The appetizers were potato salad and yellowtail with plum and crystal dressing. It was delicious. The sashimi was served separately because I arrived late. As agreed upon when I made the reservation, I apologized for the inconvenience, and they said they wanted me to enjoy it at its best. It was a wonderful gesture. And indeed, all the sashimi was fresh, crisp, and bouncy. It was sashimi on a whole other level. The kingfish was slowly grilled over charcoal, crisp on the outside and juicy inside—a true masterpiece. The subtle saltiness brought out the sweetness of the meat. They made soup with the remaining bones, which was a real treat. It was perfectly balanced with the grilled Sendai miso rice balls. Very satisfied. Assistant manager Miku's phone service was fantastic. Her customer service and butchering skills were amazing. I want to come just to see her. Thank you! I hope this restaurant continues for a long time. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) I've found a great restaurant. Everything I eat is really delicious. The sasakama made me realize that the food I had eaten before was different. The staff also said that today's eight kinds of sashimi platter was a hit. I agree! The grilled sea squirt and grilled chrysanthemum roe (grilled soft roe) were both amazing. I ended up not trying the main grilled fish or meat dishes, but I'll definitely try again. Next time I want to sit in front of the grill! Cafeteria
HEY is a trendy cafe that opened in 2019 through a collaboration between OVAL COFFEE STAND and Welcome. It offers an array of snacks and drinks, including sandwiches and fragrant coffee made with beans from Single O Japan. The donuts at the counter are particularly eye-catching, with adorable animal face motifs and crunchy chocolate varieties. Visitors praise the friendly staff, appealing selection of sweet and savory food, as well as unique-tasting donuts that are not overly sweet.
Loved the food and drinks here. We bought donuts, pulled pork sandwich and some coffee. The pulled pork sandwich was soo soo good!! Highly recommend!! I personally loved the chocolate filled donut, cinnamon donut and the cruller. The butterscotch latte was alright, it’s not sweet and has a slight burnt taste to it. The hot coffee had a light taste which was nice for me but for people who likes heavy bodied coffee, they may not enjoy it.
Bianca T — Google review
The Café sells coffee, beer, wine, and other drinks, bakery, and, above all, donuts. Also, it offers simple meal services, and, thus, it has long waiting time for lunch meal service because nearby has Sendai Bar Association and various law firms for court services and their hungry lawyers etc. Hey Café’s whisky flavor donuts are popular and in high demands, although it is unusual for its early AM-made donuts to be sold around 10 to 1030AM. The café opens daily from 09AM till 06PM, although food service ends at 03PM daily. It accepts credit card payments, and it is a Non-smoking store. The store can be accessed by Sendai subway at Aoba-dori Ichibancho Station, T- 06.

Enjoyed a yummy meal here with friends! Definitely recommend the pork sandwich!! The drink menu was surprisingly varied, with hot and iced options and oat milk available, too! The doughnut selection is also great. The frog one is especially adorable. It's worth a stop.

As a foreigner from Portland, OR, this restaurant in Sendai gave me a taste of home. The drinks are amazing, the donuts are not only absurdly cute, but also delicious, and the food is perfectly portioned! My go-to order is the keromen donut and the jerk chicken burrito. I've also tried the lemon curd donut and it's amazing. Burritos are not easy to find in Sendai, but at HEY, they are fresh and comforting. Sometimes the wait time is a little long, but it is so worth it.

A cool coffee shop that seems to be a popular brunch spot, serving up warm dishes and donuts. I just went for the sweets, and tried the lemon custard variety, which was tasty. The donut itself was super fresh, with a fluffy and chewy texture. The coffee was a really nice pour over. Great combo. The service was friendly and very accommodating.

A chic, modern cafe that's located not too far away from the Katahira campus of Tohoku University. Really great sandwiches. They also have open-faced sandwiches, which I don't think I've seen anywhere else in Japan. If you're looking for a fancy place for a brunch date, I think this place will suit you just fine. It's a bit pricey though, as there's no option to do a sandwich and drink combo. The standard coffee is underwhelming for how expensive it is, so I think you might be better off ordering a latte or Mexican mocha.

Food is good. Coffee too. I found the donuts a bit too sweet but maybe very sweets are not to my liking. We had to wait quite a long time to get the burritos but they were very tasty
