Historic Sites
The Altes Rathaus, also known as the Old Town Hall, is a historic landmark and porcelain museum located on an island accessible by pedestrian bridges. Dating back to the 14th century, it has a fascinating backstory: due to the Bishop of Bamberg's refusal to allocate land for a town hall, residents built it on stakes in the River Regnitz. The building received a Baroque update in the 18th century and is adorned with famous frescoes.
What a spectacular courthouse. Built on a bridge in the middle of a river, & adorned with wonderful paintings. The little portside & its wooden crane are just below it. A gondolier plies his gondola tour up the Am Kanal, a side stream beside it. In the middle of the Bamberg old town, the surrounding architecture is well worth walking around, This is a classic of Franconia.

Fascinating historical landmark, famous for its unique location. According to legend, the city's citizens built it on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz River after the bishop refused to grant them land. It now houses the Ludwig Collection, a museum of porcelain and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the iconic images of Bamburg. Really pretty building and a really scenic view. Detailed decorative architecture and fresco-ish external painting. The best view is from the bridge that shows the front of the building. Which is by the Tower Lots of cool stuff in that area to see as well.

Nice town like little Venice. 🏘️🛶😊 And nice to see the very old Rathaus in between a bridge that cross the river. 🌉🏰😍 Very nice views in town 👍😎✨

Bamberg Tourismus is a charming town in northern Bavaria, Germany, situated on 7 hills at the confluence of the Regnitz and Main rivers. The old town boasts well-preserved buildings dating from the 11th to 19th centuries, including the picturesque Altes Rathaus and the impressive Bamberg Cathedral. Visitors can explore distinct beer taverns and enjoy delicious local brews. However, some challenges include limited parking space and occasional issues with facilities like public toilets.
Had a two hour walking Tour with fun and a lot of informations Recommend the Tour by the Tourists Information because I think it's more like a private Tour. A cheap entertainment.

Bamberg is a town in northern Bavaria, Germany, laid out over 7 hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. Its old town preserves structures from the 11th to 19th centuries including the muraled Altes Rathaus (town hall), which occupies an island in the Regnitz reached by arched bridges. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, features 4 towers and numerous stone carvings

It's so awkward, the tourist information office of the medieval UNESCO heritage site is in the only modern building in the area. 🙄
Risto M — Google review
In response I'll comment a fellow tour guide "K O" that mentioned there isn't English tour guide and gave just 1 star. Wrong! They have it and I heard in 2 occasions yesterday just as I walked passed by some people receiving guide in English language at Grüner Markt where fruits and vegetables are sold outside under red umbrellas. Secondly Bamberg is Germany, and one should expect things to be in German language (yes I know tourists don't have to learn German). Be fair, you can't go to USA or UK and expect local tour guide in German language. Third, this city offers so much. People are friendly and they won't mind stopping by to answer your questions. Worth mentioning, at the tourist information desk I was spoken to in English language by the woman at the desk and handed an English language city info paper. I didn't have internet on my phone but bunch of people outside used their phone to get directions and help me know where to go. Yes it's Germany and yes people are good and more than willing to help. Check out my pics.

The old town is very nice with its distinct beer taverns. The public toilet of the defunct St. Michaels monastery was closed and there is a lack of parking space in the courtyard of the former monastery. Our hotel room at the Residence Castle was not properly heated.

Neptunsbrunnen is a historical landmark located in the bustling Gruner Markt square of Bamberg. The fountain features a statue of the Roman god Neptune holding a gilded trident. It's a popular meeting point and offers stone seating to relax, although it can get cold. Nearby, there are regular markets and shopping opportunities, making it an ideal spot to soak up the town's charm. This beautiful fountain is definitely worth visiting when exploring the historical German town of Bamberg.
Nice square with regular markets in the center of town. Definitely worth a stop by when visiting Bamberg.

This is a Baroque style statue of Neptune situated in the pedestrian area at Grüner Markt. Locally known as Gabelmann (Fork Man). It is the work of sculptor J.K. Metzner (1697-98). What you see is the Roman God of the Sea with his trident standing amongst dolphins from which water spouts into a ground level basin. The basin is surrounded by delicately designed wrought-iron grill. It is an attractive fountain to see even during winter visits when the fountain is not in operation.

Brewery
Schlenkerla, Rauchbierbrauerei is a well-established family-owned brewery known for its unique smoked beer and traditional Bavarian cuisine. The brewery offers a variety of beers including Schlenkerla Helles, Marzen, Spezial Lager, and Zwergla. In addition to these familiar options, they also feature rare selections like Weyermann's Imperial Stout and constantly rotate unusual brews that are not commonly found elsewhere.
This was our second visit of this brewery and restaurant, our first visit was in 2021 but we were not able to get a reservation for a meal then. We had lunch here but the pork knuckles was bit on the dry side but with good flavor. The mushroom quiche.was delicious! We went uphill for about half mile to visit there brew house and one of retired brew master gave us a grand tour of the facility, showing us how they smoked the malt to get that smoky flavor in to the beer and we also went down to the cellar and try the beer directly from the brewery ! If you visit Bamberg, this is the place you must visit!
Steven C — Google review
Heard the smoked beer was awesome, so I dropped by Bamberg during my holiday. Grabbed dinner with friends too. The pork shoulder was really good—highly recommend! Snagged a 3-pack of beer to go ;) The place was packed, though—tons of people at the door, which threw this tourist off a bit
_NiNiNi_ — Google review
The smoked beer was great, very unique. Taste like smoked sausage. Definitely a must try when in Bamberg. There were many people just chilling outside the restaurant chatting, while drinking. If you want to do the same, how it works is that you will need to pay a deposit “pfand” when ordering your beer, if not mistaken its €2, then they hand you the mug of beer. When you’re done, just head back to the counter, return the mug and get back your deposit. Enjoy!
Siew F — Google review
Famous for their Rauchbier I now got to try their food. They got the typical local dishes. We had the Krustenbraten and Tafelspitz. Both dishes were well prepared. They are quite busy in summer, but they made space for our large group. Great hospitality. But for some reasons they do not entertain bachelor parties.
Jasmin H — Google review
An authentic Bamberg brewery and restaurant. Because it’s ranked at the top of almost every tourist guide, it does get very crowded with visitors – many of whom just wander through or have a quick beer while standing. But if you take the time to sit down, order and enjoy the excellent beer, it’s well worth it. The food is hearty and tasty, service is fast, and while the staff aren’t overly friendly (a bit of an assembly-line feel), they are attentive. The only real downside to dining outdoors is the sheer number of flies – you’ll be busy fighting them off for your meal.
Ermi M — Google review
Great beer garden. Ate here both nights I spent in Bamberg. Managed to get through the entire list of smoked beers. The red lager was my favourite
Michael L — Google review
We visited this place for lunch and sample Franconian kitchen and the legendary smoked beer. We were greeted by a very pleasant man in glasses who told us many interesting things. Overall, the staff was very welcoming and friendly. We didn't have to wait for a table; we were seated right away. The atmosphere is very authentic, in the old German style. We ordered sausages with cabbage and beef brisket with potato ball in a creamy cranberry-horseradish sauce. Everything was delicious, I highly recommend it!
Ivan M — Google review
Good food, great beer. I would definitely make a reservation, we were lucky and stood by until a table opened up. Friendly service especially considering we had two children and the place was packed. Best place to get a rauchbeir in Bamberg!

Bamberg Old Town is a captivating destination that boasts a rich tapestry of history and stunning architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage site features beautifully preserved half-timbered houses and the iconic Bamberg Cathedral, which stands as a testament to its medieval roots. One of the highlights is the Water City Hall, uniquely perched on an artificial island in the Regnitz River, connected by charming stone bridges.
Plenty of reasons to visit medieval old town of Bamberg that kept its charm through centuries. Cathedral / New Residence square and rose garden were impressive but true highlight of the walk was area around old town hall on small island in the river.

Extremely beautiful town. Driving is complicated so sort out where you’re going to park before you come. Parking is 2-2.50€/hour. Plenty of hotels, cafes, restaurants, bars, markets and services as it is also has a University campus with plenty of facilities, libraries, etc.

We had an absolutely wonderful time in this beautiful city. From the moment we arrived, the charm of the streets, the stunning architecture, and the vibrant atmosphere made the experience unforgettable. What really stood out was the overall vibe of the city: lively yet welcoming, with a perfect balance of culture, history, and modern energy. Cathedral
Place of worship
Bamberg Cathedral, also known as the Imperial Cathedral, is a 13th-century church that holds significant historical and artistic treasures. Originally built by Emperor Henry II, it features four spires and houses the tomb of Pope Clement II, the marble tombs of Henry II and Queen Cunigunda, as well as the famous Bamberg Horseman statue. The cathedral's late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture showcases remarkable sculptures, carvings, and choirs.
Great Cathedral very ornate. Great architecture, though it is getting some external renovation right now. A lot of cool architecture inside. Some famous statues of the king and wonderful tomb where the Lady is on the more honored side, basically because she was so beloved! There is a Pope buried in here, but I was not able to find it, though there were a few sections cordoned off.
Don D — Google review
No if you want to get a sense of the towns history visiting the Cathedral and exploring the connected / nearby buildings is a great place to start. We visited on a busy weekend but found it easy to move through the Cathedral at our own pace on a self guided tour. There were people available to answer questions and were were free to roam respectfully. Walking down to the catacomb was also a unique way to get a sense of history through the life of the space, which has had multiple fires. The stonework and scale is massive. I’m told they have music with the pipe organ on Saturdays but don’t know the details. I can only imagine what the massive organ sounds like during services.
Ross A — Google review

A comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. A place for couples, friends, or family. Feels like a family place instead of a pub. A jazz player played on his guitar for the clients which was nice. Italian restaurant
A lovely Italian restaurant Aposto Bamberg in Bamberg offers great food and service for families with small children. The restaurant has plenty of space to park a stroller, and the exterior has a view of a garden, playground and river.
Five star experience here at Aposto. It's conveniently located next to a big parking spot, accessibly priced, with plenty of room and plenty of menu items. They do the usual pizza and pasta and cocktails but with a bit of flair. We had the tandoori chicken pasta and the Julius Caesar calzone. I liked them both. Nothing to write home about but still palatable. Easy-eating. Italians should probably steer clear.

Ice cream is a great way to cool off. Loved the STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER, and the ISLAND IN THE SUN. Flavors were excellent and it hit the spot.. The JOE EXOTIC was low on the flavor and more milky than expected. The popcorn was more Styrofoam than kernel. Served ice in the water which while not usual for Europe, was very welcome.

Definitely worse places to go if you want some decent Italian food. The pizza and pasta were good. The big benefit of this place is the great location, familiar food options for travelers, and the fact it opens on Sundays. Really no complaints. We could see ourselves visiting again if we find ourselves in Bamberg. It’s worth a quick stop.

Took ages to get our food. 30% were not served. Two of them needed to repeatedly ask for their order. Waiter promised compensation in form of smaller drinks or shots. They never arrived, even when hewas remembered actively. Food is way too expensive. Very small servings with a lack of tasting or even quality. Everything is massively overpriced. Not a good experience. They want to be something, they don't achive. I could go to Vapiano to get the same quality and just pay half of what is asked here.

The beer, food, atmosphere and service is top notch!! Thank you Spezial-Keller for an unforgettable night!! If you are in Bamberg, you MUST stop here! 👏🏻👏🏻

Laid back place with a beer garden and a great view. Can have a Rauchbier while checking out Bamberg below. Had Bratwürste with sauerkraut and went really well together :) Really pretty.
Katarina K — Google review
We did not have any food up there but it's definitely worth checking out. Relaxed hang out (altho we heard it can get pretty busy in there) and some nice regional beers from tap. Altho something else for people who are not that much into beer.
G S — Google review
Had just beer here, all of them was excellent pils as well as light smoked lager (helles), unfortunately only these two were draft ( vom vass), shaufelle looked very good, anyway. Nice view on the city, spoiled by play ground for kids.

Great terrace to see the sunset enjoying good German food and the typical Bamberg smoked beer!

We were lucky enough to come for “CSU Jazz Morning Pint with Soul Message” and had a wonderful time! The views and music can’t be beat. Food was good (nothing specccciiiallll but all solid) and service was attentive even though there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. Worth a visit for the ambiance alone but stay for everything else!

I got the Cordon bleu mit Kartoffelsalat. The special part was the Emmentaler-Käse. Recommended by the staff. It was very good! The beer as well was 👌

Wonderful view, good service and the best Schäuferla (and lamb) we had during our 3 day visit to Bamberg - this may be the best Keller in town! The team kindly set up a new table for us, as the garden is usually filled fast - as is to be expected. The Spezialbier is fantastic, even as a panache I highly recommend it!

Wilde-Rose-Keller is a laid-back beer garden with a sprawling outdoor space that hosts occasional concerts. It offers a spacious and leafy environment, making it an ideal spot to enjoy cool drinks and good food during the summer. Unlike other Kellers in the area, Wilde-Rose-Keller allows patrons to bring their own food. The venue's relaxed atmosphere and ample shade make it a popular choice for visitors seeking a pleasant outdoor experience.
Excellent place for a fun night. Great atmosphere, packed with locals, and we were lucky to be there when a local trio Oompah band were playing inside. Huge outside seating area too but due to the weather and the hour we stayed inside. Superb beers and tankards.
Adam D — Google review
Nice relaxed beer garden. They got beer and wine. And of course the traditional Bavarian dishes. Unfortunately, the day we were there it was raining. Thankfully they have a patio area with a roof.

A favorite for the locals and a tourist stop too. Good hiking shoes if walking the steep little hill from downtown. Beautiful open space, flowers still in season in September. Easy self-service with all food options you expect from a biergarten. Bring cash, always the preferred or only method of payment.
Indy V — Google review
Great place. Bit of a hill to climb to get to it, but it’s worth it. Only opens for restricted times, and at certain times of the year, so check before you make the pilgrimage. An undefined brewer supplies very good beer and although I didn’t eat here, the food being offered looked delicious. All selbsbedienung (self service) and well worth a visit!
Brendan G — Google review
Doesn’t have the views Spezial-Keller does but still a fun biergarten with great beers and a real local community vibe. Food looks good but we were surprised with a limited Sunday menu so we didn’t get anything as the items we wanted were not available. Counter service. A bunch of trees but not much cover so might not be best place to go when raining. Worth a visit 🙂
Neil L — Google review
A really atmospheric Bierkeller up the hill in Bamberg with leafy trees and a nice old wooden fixtures. It's not a brewery but they have a few beers contract brewed for them, as well as a few city favorites. Food looks good and fairly priced. If you are going to the nearby Spezial Keller, you should check this one out, too.
Beer W — Google review
The hike up the hill can be a bit steep, and it is decently far away from any other places for food or drinks. Though that doesnt mean it wont be crowded. So if you want something a little more out of the way and secluded. This is the spot. The beer was good. I personally enjoyed the Keller. The food was great and reasonably priced. Overall, it is a great spot.
Christian B — Google review
A must visit for family/group picnics with the option to buy whatever food and drinks needed (self-service). The garden is spacious, beautiful and perfect during a hot day to find some cover under the large trees. The food (Schäuferla!) was great, but it was especially the open atmosphere that makes this Keller special.

Brauerei Greifenklau is a local favorite in Franconia, known for its delicious Schaufele and traditional side dishes like Kloss, Sauerkraut, and mashed kale. While the brewery may seem secluded, the 15-minute walk up the Kaulberg offers stunning city views on the way back. The beer garden at Greifenklau provides a regal view of the Altenburg from atop a ridge that once housed its beer cellars.
Some of the best food I've had in my life, I don't understand how it can be so good. Silky dumplings, meatloaf from heaven, pork cabbage gravy everything... The kitchen team can keep a secret because nowhere else comes close.
Benjamin K — Google review
The beer garden was unfortunately closed, but there still was plenty of available seating inside. The wheat beer was excellent (from a nearby brewery). Other two beers were slightly above average. The crest of this brewery is pretty impressive (be sure to look at the craved wooden crest inside). They do sell some of their glasses for a reasonable price.

We were wandering around Bamberg and came to Griefenklau, only to find that the Biergarten was reserved for a private function. As I searched google out in the parking lot for another spot, the manager (Herr Brockard, I think) walked out and invited us into the room in the front, and tolerated my terrible attempts at german. Such a nice experience, and the beer was really nice too. Even got to speak to the younger man about their brewing process. Just wonderful, would love to return someday for dinner.

Yet another great Bamberg brewery. This one's up the hill so not as many people venture there but if you do, you'll be rewarded with a more local experience, great food and some very nice beer, too. Had only been here in winter but recently got to go to their Biergarten, which was even better than I had imagined. It was a godsend on a hot day with big leafy trees and a very quaffable Kellebier. Had some English friends with me and they had their first Schäuferla and it was a great one. Stopped back in December and had their Bock beer and the Christmas atmosphere was warm and cozy.

GREAT place to dine at....The food is really good and authentic and the staff was friendly and very helpful with my beer choices!! Mike the waiter and the bartender(I've seen both times I've visited Bamberg at different restaurants..lol) made the visit a very special one for me.. It was so nice here I told them I'd stop back by before returning to the US!!
Kampground U — Google review
I have to say, the Franconians really know how to make an excellent Schäufele! The food we had was super delicious, the roasted pig's shoulder itself was cooked to perfection with crispy rind and an amazing ball of Kloß as a side dish (each dish gets one Kloß, we ordered extra). In addition to the Kloß, you get to choose whether you want to have a Sauerkraut or some kind of mashed kale (Grünkohl). The restaurant offers other dishes as well, but since Franconia is known for its Schäufele, better order it than anything else. During peak hours and season, better come early or reserve a place (especiall if you're bringing your whole crew there) because otherwise you need to hunt for a table, gawking at people trying to have a nice time with their loved ones. The food and drinks come out pretty fast from the kitchen, the staffs are friendly even under a lot of pressure. The way to the restaurant is pretty challenging by foot but the reward after a long walk is totally worth it

A bit of a walk from the centre but in a pretty suburb. This place is more 'traditionally Franconian' than in the centre. Tourists are basically non-existant out here and that is matched in the prices, i.e. better value for money. Beer is good and food was delicious. Worth making the journey to (20 mins walk from the Cathedral).

Michelsberg Monastery, located in Bamberg, is a historic former monastery with a picturesque rose garden and panoramic views of the city. The church, founded in 1015 and rebuilt in neo-Gothic style after a fire, features a stunning ceiling painting known as the 'Garden of Heaven.' While ongoing construction may obstruct some views, visitors can still explore the monastery museum.
We enjoyed our hike up to this lovely monastery. The views are amazing and the gardens around it are worth the trip to the top. The renovations prevented us from going into the buildings.

As of February 2024, It was being remodeled. But tourists can walk inside the church watching the view. Scenary of the downtown is quite nice. It is around more than 20 minutes from downtown. Because it is small town, it's not burdensome. But It is still totally up to you whether to visit in here or not.
Slaivory — Google review
Monastery is under construction for a few years at this point, so not much to see besides beautiful view of the town underneath, also a nice hike / walk to and from the place, however rose garden in New Bishop’s residence affords comparable view in gorgeous historic setting around. Hence, monastery visit could be skipped if timing is tight.

Highly recommended if you want to feel Bamberg from top. I have been here three times and this place never gets old or boring. I still feel the same adrenaline as I had felt during my first visit to this Monastery. The best view of Bamberg. It takes a good hike to come here but once you are on the top, you have a breathe taking view of Bamberg with the cathedral and residence shining in the background. Although the church has been closed for several years due to the restoration but it has a very beautiful, well maintained garden. It is refreshing to be up there. There are three cafe - restaurants on-site to refresh yourself one of which has a cool Biergarten with an amazing view. I would still recommend a coffee and cake.

Hilltop monastery with the second best views over Bamberg (after Spezial Keller beer garden). Lovely tranquil setting to enjoy the view while wondering through the gardens. Unfortunately the majority of the site is closed until further notice as a result of restoration work so you can't access very much. The church was off-limits when we went but nonetheless the garden areas are nice. The Franconian Brewing Museum is also based on site. I highly recommend stopping at one of the beer gardens for lunch or a drink as it's a beautiful setting.

Great atmosphere and service. We particularly enjoyed the fact, that everything was done with passion and professionaly. Starting with the water served to our Espresso, followed byba great chocolate and raspberry cake. Afterwards, we tried the devil's ice coupe with chilli chocolate and enjoyed a visit to the dinning rooms. Will report further after having had a dinner and room here.

Located in Bamberg, Domterrassen offers a diverse dining experience with a variety of options to suit every palate. From freshly grilled dishes to Mediterranean seafood and delicious coffee and cake, there's something for everyone. The restaurant features a wide selection of European and continental cuisine, Greek specialties like Gyros, and healthy vegetarian choices.
It was my first time going there and oh boy how much have I enjoyed it! Literally everything there was perfect. First of all, the staff were friendly, attentive, and sufficient. Not once I felt neglected by them. Second of all, the food was a gastronomic delight and miracle. I cannot recall the last time when I relished and appreciated every bite that I made. By the end, I ate everything and left nothing on my plates. Especially, I’d like to emphasise the restaurateurs work. She’d succeed at creating a heartwarming and unique environment which makes me want to go back again and again. Therefore, I definitely recommend this place if you seek extraordinary food, excellent service, and memorising atmosphere.

Well-executed, modern interpretation of regional specialities. Just across the road from Brauerei Spezial, Fässla offers a traditional beer hall experience with plenty of wood decor and stenciled hops along the walls.
My favorite German bar and food!!! Great spot with amazing beer and delicious food. The staff are super friendly. I didn’t see an English menu and they didn’t take credit cards - cash only. Those restrictions aside it’s a wonderful bar and is now our meal to beat so far in Germany. I had the pork shank with sour Kraft and dumpings. Omg so amazing. My wife had the curry wurst - also delicious. Great beer. You gotta go here.

Mahr's Bräu is a family-owned brewery with an authentic brew pub that offers regional cuisine and a charming beer garden. During warm weather, the beer garden becomes the main attraction, offering a lively atmosphere. The brewery and tavern are situated near each other, with a small garden out front for guests to enjoy.
Mahr's Bräu felt like having a beer in the 1800s. Very authentic feeling, staff was very friendly and polite, food was good and the beer was great. The best thing about the place is it's authenticity and vibe. Be prepared to share the tables with friendly germans. If you go during the winter months you might see as we did the stove beein lit with wood. Getting the "U" is a must

A bit of a drive from the Altstadt and only walkable for the most dedicated. Plenty of parking, though be careful because I got a parking ticket just as I was leaving! In a quiet part of Bamberg next to a nice old church. Since it's outside of the old city, it's a larger facility, with a proper biergarten and a large indoor seating area with some nice bathrooms. Busy bar window with some of their best offerings on draft. Friendly, young folks working the garden. Food was traditional and the sausages with sauerkraut and mustard were delicious.

Mahrs is noted in the beer world but it's just far enough from the Bamberg city center to ensure it's not full of tourists. Certainly some make it out here, especially those in search of beer. The food can be exceptional, especially the goose breast. Low wooden beamed ceilings and barman in vests make for an atmospheric time.

This restaurant is definitely not on the tourist attraction side of things. It's as local and authentic as it gets! Its small and very cozy. The beer is made there and the food is authentic Bavarian and very good! If you get an opportunity to get off the beaten path(tourist path) and go here for a drink take it and you will not be disappointed.

Brewery
Beer hall
German restaurant
Brauerei Spezial is a long-standing tavern in Bamberg, known for its roast pork, schnitzel, and dumplings paired with their signature smoked beer. The brewery follows traditional methods by malting its own grain over a beechwood fire instead of purchasing it from a malting facility. Located on the historic Obere Konigstrasse, it's just a short walk from Schlenkerla and the iconic Altes Rathaus.
I visited the bar a couple of times and had food on one occasion. The two smoked beers are excellent and the currywurst was the best I had during this trip to Germany. Excellent quality and very good value for money.
Richard E — Google review
Besides the internet is totally useless, this one of the two still drying there malts by burning woods to create the world famous smoky flavor beer is very charming with great location! This three (brewery, restaurant and hotel) in one establishment is one of the many places that you got to visit when you’re in Bamberg! The hotel has three floors without elevator. Restaurants serve very nice traditional German food. And of course the beer is fantastic! This is a historic place that makes Bamberg ~ Bamberg!
Steven C — Google review
Brauerei Spezial is nothing short of a Bamberg treasure. Steeped in centuries of history – brewing since 1536 – this place embodies the very essence of Franconian tradition. From the moment you step inside, you’re struck by its authentic charm: a beautifully preserved interior that feels both rustic and welcoming, filled with the warmth of Bavarian culture. The food is absolutely exquisite. We tried the Schäufele (roast pork shoulder with crackling), served with the traditional potato dumpling and sauerkraut, and it was simply perfection – tender, full of flavour, with a crispy skin that was pure delight. The schnitzel, golden and perfectly fried, paired with crispy fries, was just as impressive. This is traditional German cuisine at its finest, executed with care and authenticity. An interesting detail: the menu is only in German, which makes the experience feel even more genuine, though the staff speak English and are happy to help guide you through the choices. It’s all part of what makes this brewery-restaurant so unique – you truly feel immersed in local life. Of course, no visit would be complete without their legendary smoked beer (Rauchbier), which is a speciality of Bamberg and brewed here with centuries of expertise. Rich, distinctive, and unforgettable – much like the entire experience. Dining at Brauerei Spezial was not just a meal, but a journey through Bamberg’s culinary and brewing heritage. An unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone seeking the real taste of Bavaria.

First time having smoked beer. Taste like someone rescued a cask from a burning brewery. Not my cup of tea. Food was great. Ordered the pork schnitzel and Nuremberg bratwurst. Both excellent and I especially loved the pork salad with the schnitzel.

Lady with short, black hair - unbelievably bad service! She don't even noticed us in a complently empty restaurant, we felt like intruders. No hello, no response, no smile, eye contact. It's the worst customer service I've seen!

First stop in Bamberg when we arrived. Our kelnerin was kind and efficient. Dunkel smoked beer was delicious! I was surprised 😮 to find vegan currywurst. It was also delicious. Great place not far from the train station.

Good beer Very nice location Extremely rude staff
Petter W — Google review
Nice old place for a beer. We went whilst kitchen was closed so couldn't sample the food. It was busy with plenty of people eating and drinking. The smoke beer was superb! A strange locking mechanism on the toilets, presumably to keep passers by from using them, meant you have to wait to be buzzed in.

Brewpub
Klosterbräu Bamberg is a historic half-timbered brewery and restaurant that has been serving guests since 1533. The establishment offers wood-paneled rooms and a stepped terrace for visitors to enjoy. One of the standout dishes at Klosterbräu is the schauferla, a roasted quarter pork shoulder with intense savory sauce, which is considered the best in Bamberg.
Great food, awesome beers! I had the Jägerschnitzel. The Braunbier and Schwarzbier are my favorites. Very cozy and historical atmosphere. We were also given a brewery tour by Carolin, which was very interesting and fun! I give historical beer tours in Bamberg myself and I still learned a lot of new things about the Klosterbräu during the tour. We were able to try the Schwarzbier fresh from the tank! I would definitely suggest coming here to eat, drink and taking the tour if possible!

Thankfully we were able to sit outside🤗 The Schäuferla was really crispy on the outside and tender on the inside🤤 It was a huge portion for me but I was enjoying it! If you wanna try the Fränkische Shäuferla, I recommend this place👍

Incredible beer to incredible prices. Genuine waiters who take no bullshit. We can really recommend!

Smoked beer is amazing, nothing like the smoked ales that I've had before. Ate the roasted pork shoulder, which was also delicious. If you like good ale & food, this place does both very well!

Wonderful pork! So juicy and melting in the mouth with perfect skin crackle. Try smoked beer and strong season special for a local taste. There are some games you can play with kids while waiting. We had a previous reservation, because the place is very special and the oldest brewery in Bamberg. It’s from year 1533. 🤩

Beautiful biergarten right next to the river. The service was quick and pleasant, speaking English was no problem. They make several good beers when you've had enough of the smokey ones around town, these are surely refreshing. I had the sausage with brown bread and it was very good. Came out quick and was tasty. Really relaxing area to just sit and have a few beers, peacefully.
Dan Y — Google review
On a quieter street/corner of the Altstadt and in a standalone, classic Bavarian building that seems to have a lot of history. Interior is very rustic and out front are some long tables. At the bar area, it's cozy and a great place to try their offerings. They had several styles on draft so I had to try them all and took the same bottles to go along with a glass. Incredibly delicious beer and some friendly people working and drinking there. A must stop in Bamberg!
Matthew G — Google review
Place was packed, so I suggest making a reservation. Even though they were almost full, they seated us at a reserved table they had set aside. They asked that we please eat and drink quickly so that they could ready the table for the reservation. Food was hot and delicious and I loved their beer! Service was outstanding and friendly. Would definitely come here again!

Spanish restaurant
Bolero Bamberg is a Spanish restaurant located at the foot of Unteren Kaulbergs in the old town, bringing a taste of Costa Brava to Bamberg. The eatery offers a variety of tapas, paellas, and grilled dishes in a tiled interior adorned with bullfighting posters as well as a charming leafy garden. While the menu predominantly features meat and seafood options, there are also eight vegan and eight vegetarian tapas creations available.
My wife and I were ecstatic to find Bolero in the heart of Bamberg and just a short walk from our hotel. We absolutely love tapas, but we have had mixed experiences in Germany. Let me just say that Bolero is among the best tapas we have had in all of Europe. It doesn't hurt that the restaurant itself is gorgeous and beautifully decorated in Spanish décor. There is also a large outside seating area. We came here on a Friday evening so we decided to do a recon mission beforehand. We came right when they opened up to make a reservation for the evening. We are glad we did as the place was completely packed by the time we finished our two-hour meal. We started with some delicious and perfectly cooked fried calamari. This was followed by gambas al ajillo and pulpo Galicia, which are always two of our favorites. Both dishes were amazing! We were only half way done as we also enjoyed the pimientos de Padron and sweet potato fries with a soicy sauce. Again, these dishes were outstanding. For our final tapa, we ordered something I had never seen before on a tapas menu. It was called pasta rellena, which was simply noodles cooked in a Manchego cheese sauce. This dish was actually the hit of the evening; however, every item was superbly outstanding! My wife and I enjoyed two glasses of dry white wine. Our waitress was also worth noting as Nexhisa Zeko took fabulous care of us. She knew exactly when to bring out a new dish and take away an empty one. The meal, the atmosphere, the service, and the evening were excellent. I strongly recommend coming to Bolero and doing the dance of the tapas! Que deliciosa y muchas gracias!

We had fried calamari, sweet potato fries and paella. If I’m not wrong, the chicken in the paella had bones. So be careful when eating..also, the sangria was quite strong. Overall, decent place! Friendly staff, good service. Nice environment to chill as a couple or with friends.

Come here to eat or drink. You will have very delicious food, very nice service, all 5 stars. And also, for Asian girls, just a kind reminder: if you have dinner here, you may also receive the “goodwill” of an old gentleman, who is suuuper friendly. He will keep watching you, sizing you up, and staring at you while you eat. If you treat him with respect for older people and smile back, he will come over to talk to you, tell you his age, and the fact that he does not have a wife, letting you fully feel his "enthusiasm" and "friendliness". He will flatter you—telling you how young and pretty you look, and of course, how all Asian girls are so beautiful. Once he learns you are here studying alone, he will generously offer his pity: “Poor thing, no father, no mother here, living all by yourself, how sad!" Completely ignoring the fact that we are mature, independent adult women who can take care of ourselves. Even if you try to keep physical distance, he will keep moving closer, trying to sit nearer and nearer to you. This all happened to us three "poor" girls at around 21:00 on 28.09.2025. ---------------------------------- Many thanks to the hotel reception staff: while this old man was talking to us, they kindly gave us three non-alcoholic drinks and offered the old gentleman a glass of alcohol. The drinks for us were very good. Thank you very much. Note: This was just a very personal, random encounter and has nothing to do with the restaurant itself. The food and the service here are truly excellent, and I give this place five stars.

First of all, the tapas were amazing! We ordered a bunch of different tapas, and each one was delicious. The bartender’s attitude was great, but the Sangria we ordered was really bad it had almond syrup in it so we couldn’t even finish it

i decided to go to this restaurant since i miss spanish food as i have lived in spain for 2 years. we made a reservation online on the website on the same day we went to eat. the atmosphere is great, very nice deco. there is good variety in the menu. we ordered a variety of different tapas, my favorite was the pulpo (octopus) which tasted exactly like in spain, and the green peppers. i didn’t like the fried baby squid, the oil had been used too many times and it was too salty. the beef thing was also really good, very soft meat. the croquetas were not so authentic, tasted a bit weird and nothing like the ones in spain. i got a creme de catalana for dessert which was also quite good. i also ordered a sangria, which was really bad, tasted really artificial, as if they mixed fanta with wine and i could not finish it, i could barely drink half of it. i really don’t recommend getting the sangria. there is plenty of other drinks to choose from. overall i recommend the restaurant, it has some nice dishes and a nice ambience.

Nice place with nice outdoor seating area. I am Spanish, so I wasn't very impressed by the food . The fried tapas were ok, but Paella does not do the cut for me. Desserts were tasty, and the staff was friendly. If you remove the "Spanish food" expectations is a decent place.

A very delicious well made Gluten-free Pizza! We were here at lunch, in two without reservation. The waiter was nice, prepared and the order arrived fast (table outside, even if a little tight as place). The pay was obviously way above the usual pizza price(56 for 2 gluten-free pizzas, 2 lemonade and 2 caffe) It's the first time I found a gluten-free pizza in Germany, and I must say that I am impressed! (the only thing to be added is that ...garlic on the Volcano pizza is delicious...but considered Italian only on some parts of Italy, let's admit it for those who don't digest it ☺️) Anyway, Thank you guys! Especially that thanks to you, we can eat a safe gluten-free pizza 🍕 😋!!!

Really nice place, pizza tastes good and service super friendly. I do recommend visiting, but make sure you have a reservation. I noticed that the prices went up massively over the past 5 years and it's by far more expensive than visiting an italian restaurant in London, which was very surprising. (My friend paid almost 10 euros for a little side salad and over 20 euros for a pizza. Drink prices are OK.)

Restaurant Kornblume in Bamberg is a haven for those seeking organic and eco-friendly dining options. The restaurant offers a variety of vegetarian, vegan, and meat dishes, ensuring there's something for everyone. With a focus on fresh and guilt-free Franconian cuisine, Kornblume provides fast service without compromising on quality. Visitors can enjoy their meals in the shaded beer garden during the summer months.
We ate at the Restaurant Kornblume after seeing it recommended in the Lonely Planet guide. It's well worth seeking out - it's on the quieter streets of Bamberg, away from the crowds and it's a lovely spot for food. It was a quiet evening when we were in and we had excellent service, with the chef coming out to ask us how we'd like our meals prepared. The results were some of the finest dinners we've ever eaten! Great meat dishes but also a falafel dish that was out of the world! Would definitely recommend and if we're ever back in Bamberg we would certainly return!

Very nice place, great service, pleasant atmosphere, delicious food, despite the fact that the menu is more on vegetarian area (you will find however also some meat dishes). The portions are big so if you enjoy also a starter or a soup (recommended), get the smaller size of the main dish! Good luck further in keeping the restaurant running in these special times!
