Its good transport connections make it a convenient base for exploring the wider national park.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Beatrix Potter at the captivating World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. This interactive exhibit beautifully brings to life the beloved characters from her timeless children's books, offering a perfect family-friendly experience, especially on rainy days. Delve into the story of Potter's writing and her significant contribution to Lakeland conservation through engaging displays.
Do you enjoy the imaginary world created by the wonderful Beatrix Potter, or simply the famous Peter Rabbit? This is a great place to spend the day exploring an amazing curated environment in a busy town. Make sure you travel light and avoid bringing your buggy if possible as it does get rather tight spaced with the audience viewing but they do control no. Of people at a time as there is a 3min video at the start. Get the free activity book and find the answers with your children. There is also two cafe - one that offers coffee and cakes and painting, the other (across the road) is newly added which offers food also but closes early and can get rather busy.

Such a beautifully curated attraction. We all loved it (adults) so beautifully done. It must have been such a joy to put to together, the modelling and art work was so clever. I loved going into the garden it looked just like the real garden at Hill Top (though smaller). The little boxes with Beatrix Potter figures in a mini tableau were exquisite. A must for all ages.

I first visited this place three years ago, and I found that this place was quite small. I cannot believe how much bigger it has become this year. They have not only added more visual aids of scenes in mainly Peter Rabbit’s stories, but also added a brand new gallery showing the background of Beatrix Potter, involved with the Lake District history. It’s quite fun to take photos here and observe cute little animal figures in the barrows closely. The gift shop has not changed much, and the products there remain the same. Overall, it is an interesting place to visit, especially when you come with families and friends.

I’m in love! Totally worth a visit if you are a fan or in town with the kids. Lovely exhibition and enough activities to keep the kids entertained. Even if you’re not a fan it is worth a visit for their display! From an artistic perspective they did a marvelous job. Unfortunately for we visited quite late in the day so we only got to spend so much time inside. Would recommended the latest admission at 15:00 if you truly want to enjoy the full experience and get lost in the world of Beatrix Potter!
Meizhu C — Google review
Such a nostalgic place to visit as an adult (with no kids) who thoroughly enjoyed reading the books as a child. The exhibition is in great condition and it was lovely to have all the memories brought back. We thoroughly enjoyed stopping at the Peter Rabbit Café afterwards too!

This was one if the loveliest, cutest museums we have been too. The animations and displays were beautifully done, and took straight back to your childhood days. It was so informative and interactive for kids. Highly recommend a visit
Missy P — Google review
Superb!! The highlight of our holiday. We started at the cafe across the road (well worth a visit) and then came here. It starts with a short film which my 2 year old enjoyed, and then the free-pace walk around was outstanding. Low stimulation great for toddlers, beautiful displays and garden really brings the books to life. We’ve told everyone about it as we enjoyed it so much. I hope this stays with my daughter as a childhood memory and hope we can come again in the future
Catriona P — Google review
This was so much more than we ever expected! We thought it would just be a quick one-hour visit since it’s quite a small area. But guess what — my girl spent almost three fun hours inside! There was so much to learn and explore, and she was determined to answer every question and not miss a single hidden gem. What a world of imagination and creativity!

Windermere Jetty Museum - Stories of boats and steam is a delightful destination located on the serene shores of Lake Windermere, right in the heart of England's stunning Lake District. This museum is a treasure trove for those passionate about maritime history, showcasing an impressive array of meticulously restored boats and steam launches. Visitors can dive into the fascinating narrative of boating and boatbuilding that has shaped this region over the years.
Neither my wife nor I are especially interested in boats, but what an excellent museum! We'd seen articles and items about it, and thought we really ought to visit it, and we're very glad we did. The setting of course is unbeatable, especially in glorious weather, but the way the museum is laid out, the information panels, the consistent graphics and design - all top quality. And the cafe is really good as well. We didn't do a boat trip (lack of time, and we'd not long since done Derwent Water), but I suspect we'll do that next time we visit (given that the tickets are valid for a year). Hats off to Lakeland Arts - and after lunch we headed off to their other venue, Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, and that was superb as well.

Lovely place. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We hadn't booked anything in advance, walked in and was 5 minutes before the next sailing. We managed to get on it and we were the only 2 on the boat other than the staff. The staff on the boat Asher and Paul were fabulous making it a really special time. The cafe was lovely for a cup if tea and a slice of cake to warm back up with afterwards. We didn't get chance to look around the museum as it was close to closing time, however the ticket price was very reasonable with them saying the ticket lasts for a year too. I would very highly recommend!

I was surprised by the architecture of the Jetty Museum. You rarely see such modern architecture in a small village like this anywhere in the UK. I really enjoyed the combination of the landscape, architecture, view, and the café’s quality. I found this café by chance, and it became one of my most wonderful experiences during this short trip to Windermere.
Niloufar G — Google review
Nice museum experience, it’s small but well made. The boats are well taken care of, there’s a couple floating in their garage that are quite cute. They have one steam boat that you can book an experience with that’s £475. Inside the museum there are clothes from the old era (I think the 1930’s) that you can try out and take pictures, for men and women. There’s a playground for kids so expect to see families.

One of the best museums I've seen, really worth the while visiting. Apart from the actual exhibition pieces, we loved the modern architecture, the workshop, the caffè with kitchen with great views on the lake. Large carpark.
Ramona R — Google review
We are regular visitors here, great little place. Normally you get your car park fee returned at the cafe after buying lunch. Not over summer however... its £5 for 2 hours which is just ripping their visitors off. So today with the car parking fee on top of food we just had coffee ! Very limited lunch menu these days but you can always grab a cake. Breakfast finishes at 11.30 and then half an hour wait with no food available. It just seemed today that this place is run to suit the staff more than the visitors. Still a ni e place to visit though.

Interesting museum about the boating history of Windermere. Didn't know they held water speed record runs on the lake. There's a puzzle to solve, which is great for kids. But you have to pay attention.

One of the best rainy day attractions in the Lake District in my opinion, but it has a lovely waterfront location which is gorgeous on sunny days too. Superb cafe and really well laid out exhibits.

Windermere Lake Cruises offers a picturesque introduction to the region with various cruise options on Windermere, the area's most popular lake. You can choose from short 45-minute cruises or longer 3-hour cruises that cover different parts of the lake. Additionally, there is an option to purchase a 24-hour pass for multiple experiences. For those seeking privacy and flexibility, electric boat hire is available for exploring the lake at their own pace.
This was a great outing to see the attractions from the river side. You have the option of jumping on or off at various places and then taking another boat when you want to which gives you the ability to hop off and explore one place and then hop on to the next place. The staff were fantastic and there were many inside places on 2 decks so even if the weather is not good you can still go. There is a small bar where you can get beer, wine, hot chocolate and crisps and soft drinks. Well worth the trip!

Lovely ride on the boats today. Glorious weather. Two hours was £65 plus £60 deposit returned after we got back Only issue was the difficulty in getting in and out the boat, there’s no hand rail or mid step to get in and out. I hurt my hand getting back out of the boat and needed something cold to relieve my pain, I was telling my partner as we were in the reception area, a staff member did overhear but didn’t offer any help, yes I get there not liable for anything but even a cold compress would of helped at that point knowing I’d hurt myself getting off.

Booked this from seeing the poster at the Windermere pier and it didn't disappoint. We were a small group in our 30's and the other guests were generally a fair bit older. The boat is very spacious, not over booked and everyone gets a seat by the window. The buffet was surprisingly filling and the downstairs bar was well stocked. The staff were all very happy to be there and very professional. There was a brilliant female live singer doing various covers and by the end of the trip, half the boat was dancing around and belting out the tunes. Ended with a real feel good factor. Would make a perfect gift for parents and I do highly recommend this trip.

Easy to book online, we booked the self drive boats at their southern location - Lakeside. Excellent service on arrival, great clean boat, easy to drive, lovely to pootle the along bottom end of Lake Windermere. Great value!

I was very disheartened to see so much plastic bottled water and other beverages sold on the ferries provided by Windermere Lake cruises. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and over 95% of the plastic that we intentionally try to recycle does not actually get recycled. Rather it ends up in landfills, incinerators, in our bodies via microplastics, and of course, in our parks and lakes. It feels unacceptable to normalize the sale and consumption of such a toxic material that wreaks havoc on ecosystems all over the world. Especially from a business that is profiting off tourism to this gorgeous ecosystem in the first place. This demonstrates immense cognitive dissonance. I appreciate that you have the ability to serve coffee and tea to customers on board with real mugs. To me, that shows that more as possible, when it comes to reducing the plastic that you sell and normalize. I hope you consider how to connect your customers to Windermere, as well as to the lake District at large. And blind consumption of plastic that degrades these very landmarks, is not the way to do so. We didn’t used to live this way, and we can’t afford to keep living this way. Consumption of plastics at this scale and at this rate is killing us.

We were visiting Windermere late June. It was Sunday and a beautiful day. We were 20 people and we decided to go on a 1 hour cruise in the afternoon. Luckily, we were able to buy tickets at the pier. We had a wonderful time and the scenery was spectacular. The boat has a snack bar and drinks that were reasonably priced.

National Trust - Hill Top

Historical landmark
Local history museum
Hill Top, located near Windermere in the Lake District, is a 17th century farmhouse once owned by Beatrix Potter. The house is now managed by the National Trust and offers a glimpse into the life of the famous children's author. Visitors can explore rooms filled with her personal belongings and wander through the charming garden that inspired many of her beloved stories.
For a Beatrix Potter fan the main attraction here is to be in the same spaces that she occupied and see the things that inspired some of her books. Having copies of her books open and available at the points through the house that inspired them was a nice touch which added an extra level of understanding to the tour. The mice hidden throughout the house to find also added to the visitor engagement in a way that seemed to fit well with the general feel of the place. If you are not a Beatrix Potter fan (but you're other half is perhaps?) then do not fear. There is plenty of interest here for the tag along visitor too. The house holds its own as a purely historical attraction, and the garden areas surrounding the house are also noteworthy. Ornamental borders on the approach, a vegetable garden and a lawned orchard will all compete for your attention. Would have been nice to see some detail on the varieties of those apples? The gift shop just before the exit is well stocked and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Some exclusive items here that can only be bought at the shop itself. They are not cheap but I would imagine a dedicated fan will not be deterred by the larger numbers involved.
Mark D — Google review
Beautiful location, the house and gardens are gorgeous and worth a visit if you're a national trust member. We were not so £17 per person was quite expensive for such a small property and parking was really difficult, despite having booked parking we did have to wait some time to get a space. The house was lovely but being a period property it's small and it was cosy with so many people! The ticket timing system wasn't really adhered to so it was quite full and it was hard to take your time to look at the different rooms and read all the information when it's busy.
Livy W — Google review
There is something incredibly special about Hilltop! When walking around her small estate you can visualise all her characters from her stories. A perfect visit for little ones and adults. They sometimes have little hide and seek activities on for the little ones. If you visit in the colder months they may have their fires on, the house is cosy and features some beautifully designed wall paper. We have visited Hilltop twice. Both at different seasons, Spring & Summer. Some things to keep in mind; it can get super busy and they only have a small car park. I'm pretty sure we had to book a parking space. There is a toilet inside the garden and a quaint little gift shop with some Peter Rabbit themed gifts.
Fel — Google review
Beatrix Potter’s charming home in the Lake District, and it’s an amazing experience for fans of her work. The house itself is fascinating, feels like going back to time. filled with intricate details that bring her stories to life. Every room feels like stepping into a page of Peter Rabbit, with well-preserved furniture and personal touches that reflect her creativity. The staff are knowledgeable, offering great insights into her life and writing process. The vegetable garden is a highlight—beautifully maintained and true to the era, it’s easy to see how it inspired her tales. My only gripe is the parking, which is quite cramped and can be a hassle, especially on busy days. Still, the experience inside makes it well worth the visit. Highly recommend for a literary trip back in time!
Pritam D — Google review
Parking is free if you prefer book your tour ticket only. Otherwise you have to find your own parking. One place nearby was pricing parking at £10. The place is a great place to learn more about Beatrix Potters life and books. Recommended.
Jermaine N — Google review
A lovely little visit here, making the most of our National Trust membership. Nice see learn more about B Potters life. Very quaint. Staff lovely and knew their stuff.
Raymond ( — Google review
Another national trust treasure. A simple garden and a house with many of the contents in original condition. A glimpse into the life that was Beatrix Potter. The reserve parking is a very small for busy times so you might have to wait a few minutes until someone leaves. B road access was easy.

We had a great time exploring the house and gardens! Was very well kept with a nostalgic feel. We also picked up some lovely things from the gift shop. Would recommend booking in advance to secure parking

Hiking area
Stock Ghyll Force is a picturesque 70-ft. waterfall located in a wooded area near Ambleside village in the Lake District. The falls, which drop in two stages to form a V shape where two streams meet, are easily accessible from the village and offer excellent photo opportunities along the well-signposted footpath. This natural wonder is part of the scenic attractions that can be explored while visiting Windermere, Hawkshead, and other nearby points of interest in the region.
Really lovely walk up to the waterfall through the trees. It's a relatively easy walk, although there is uneven ground with rocks and steps. There are some benches on the way up, although some are in better condition than others. We went early evening on a Saturday and we were pretty much the only ones there. It is well signposted to the falls. It is a free walk and waterfall, you don't need to pay or get tickets. Highly recommend coming here!

Lovely waterfalls. You can follow the steep climb along the river, part walk up the road or a short distance from the nearby car park (Force Cafe, need to be a customer for parking first). We did the cafe, which was about 10 minutes, but still not ideal for those with mobility issues

Took a walk to Stock Ghyll Force Waterfall and really enjoyed it! The trail is peaceful and surrounded by beautiful woodland, with the sound of water along the way. The waterfall at the end is stunning — definitely worth the short hike. A lovely spot to relax and enjoy nature in Ambleside!

A short walk from the centre of Ambleside, these delightful, popular waterfalls are well worth visiting. Well marked tracks lead up the side of the river to the falls and then cross over small bridges so that you get the best views. An easy walk for children with lots of spots to pause and take in the view.

Stock Ghyll Force, Ambleside’s Hidden Waterfall. Located just a 15 minutes walk away from Ambleside town centre. Start your journey from the road opposite the Ambleside Inn, and follow the waymarked woodland path through Stock Ghyll Woods, where the sound of rushing water guides you to various scenic viewpoints along the river. 🌊🥾Follow the red arrows trail and cross a wooden footbridge, Just below the bridge, kids can paddle in the shallow stream. It’s a perfect spot for photos and refreshing treats.📸 🌿 Free, easy, and perfect for little explorers and nature lovers!

Always great to see the waterfalls all year round. This visit was on the loop walk from Troutbeck over Wansfell then down into Ambleside via the falls. Great walk.
DAZ A — Google review
A lovely waterfall within easy walking distance of Ambleside. The path splits about a third of the way up - the left route is classed as the more ‘challenging’ walk. We went up the left and then down the right which is definitely a more accessible route
Tanya R — Google review
We walked from the local Force cafe - you can park here but do need to visit the cafe to enable you to park. The walk isnt far from the cafe taking about 5 minutes. It was very busy with queues to take photos at some view points. You can walk a loop of the falls, crossing the bridge at the top, falling the path down to the second bridge. We would advise caution in the wet weather as with any environment like this as a slip here landed our afternoon in a&e! The paths are well maintained

Pub
The Flying Pig Pub in Bowness offers a cozy and traditional Lake District experience just a short distance from Lake Windermere. The pub provides a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu featuring freshly made dishes like fish & chips, Sunday roasts, pies of the day, and plant-based burgers. The pub's countryside decor adds to its charm. Situated near popular walking routes, the dog-friendly pub is an ideal spot for ramblers with their furry friends.
I recently visited The Flying Pig restaurant in Windermere and tried their pork knuckle menu. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly cooked—the meat was tender and juicy, with a crisp exterior that gave it just the right texture. The portion size was generous, making it a satisfying choice for anyone with an appetite. The service matched the quality of the food. Staff were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was served promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which added to the overall positive dining experience. Overall, The Flying Pig restaurant is a place I would happily recommend, especially for anyone who enjoys classic, well-prepared pork dishes served with a smile.

Decent food portions. Not particularly special. Notable is the pork trotter which is sizeable and fairly good. Service is average, unintrusive but perfunctory. Environment is warm and kid and dog friendly.

We ate here twice during our week in Bowness, and popped in for a drink every day. The pub is absolutely exceptional! Food is great, service is excellent and the atmosphere is so friendly. We took our dog with us everytime and we were made to feel so welcome. They have a special dog menu and station for biscuits, water and bowls which is some of the best facilities we’ve ever seen. We can’t wait to come back on our next break!

Fantastic food after a day walking in the hills. Good beer, but the stand out really is the food - tasty and good portion sizes. They're also really good at catering for gluten free
Arthur E — Google review
This pubs website states that the british food is usually described as bland and not good to compared to other countries (which they then said they changed that). however they made perfectly true in the food we were served! took about 5 mins to speak to someone about getting a table and the staff themselves were nice however the food was terrible. we had a roast dinner each (trio meats) and cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets, food took about 20mins to come out which wasn’t terrible timing i suppose, however i would’ve waited longer if that meant i got something hot! the gravy was like water and had no taste and cold, the meats themselves were bland and cold. potatoes were fluffy however not crispy and had no flavour except soil, unsure if you see the theme but they were cold. the veg was good, once again cold. cauli cheese was hot!! and flavourless… yorkshire tasted store bought and not fresh (cold!!!). pigs in blankets were good but not sure how you could mess that up, they were warm! took about 30mins to get a servers attention, i’m not one to complain but it was a disgrace. so i complained lightly to the server ( who was new and was not trained enough to be serving alone, i’ve worked in pubs i know how this should work.) and he was somewhat apologetic, then the manager came over shortly and he was nice about everything and gave us a 10% discount (i did not ask for any discount this was at his own doing) and offered us free deserts for when we next come, which we won’t be.. atmosphere was nice however nice fire and building, cleanliness was good. however does not make up for the disgrace of a roast and service! we left not happy and still hungry. should’ve got ice cream for desert and the running theme was cold through our visit.

I’ve eaten here a fair few times now. The food here is always nice with good portion sizes. This time I had the new pork knuckle which was huge. Had this dish in Prague recently and this was just as tasty. Traditional pub with nice selection of real ales. Recommended.

Absolutely shocking. Ordered the half chicken and the skin on the chicken was burnt. The meat beneath it was dry and over cooked. Didn’t even offer a discount or for it to be taken off the bill. I tried to eat it all but just wasn’t edible! I don’t complain much at ever. Their response was they had a new cook helping the chef. Well that’s not my problem! You can’t serve food like this!!! If they had offered a discount or taken it off the bill I would not be writing this review. They didn’t even try rectifying the situation.
Kate P — Google review
I was very disappointed in this restaurant which looked so lovely from the website and from the outside. We deliberately chose this place because of the range of options available, since some of our party have certain dietary requirements. To find out that the first menu item they ordered had run out is one thing. That the second had also run out is annoying. We weren’t told of this before ordering at all. Then to find out that of the two burgers we’d ordered, only one could actually be delivered was the last straw. Funnily enough, the one that they did choose to provide was the more expensive of the two. This obviously left a bad taste and I was cross enough that I no longer enjoyed the meal I had been so looking forward to. No great surprise, though, as the quality of the food we were provided with was average at best. We didn’t stay for desert, even though we had initially wanted to, because we didn’t want to spend more of our money here, we were no longer in the mood, and I very much expected to find out that they didn’t have what we wanted anyway. The excuse given was that it was late in the day, which is true, however, this would have been one thing if we were walk-ins, but we had reserved a table days in advance. The least you can expect of a halfway decent restaurant is that they’re actually able to serve you the food you’ve come for, especially if they’ll happily take your booking without mentioning that they might run out.

Cocktail bar
The Fizzy Tarté in Bowness-on-Windermere is a stylish and modern bar that offers a unique blend of a patisserie, champagne bar, and cafe. It's known for its exquisite afternoon tea options, including the indulgent Ultimate Afternoon Tea featuring sweet treats, finger sandwiches, locally made scones, and prosecco. The cocktail menu is impressive with expertly crafted drinks using fresh ingredients and fine spirits.
Lovely little place to eat. Service was excellent, cafe was nice and quite. Server was excellent. Great all round

Lovely cocktail bar located in Bowness, by lake Windermere. Lovely service and atmosphere. Good selection of cocktails, but pricey. Extra £5 for their signature version of classic cocktails, with not much difference to the classic version on the menu - ie: smoke in an old fashioned.

Lacking a savoury aspect, sandwiches small and skinny and bread dry. This was £68 for two, voucher bought last November 2024 when the afternoon tea looked indulgent now September 2025 and the owners obviously cutting back and using cheaper ingredients. Would not go back, would advise this is worth no more than £17 pp.

Came here on Sunday night bought 3 lovely cocktails and decided we would come back in the next couple of days for the offer of 2 cocktails for £17.95. Big board outside the premises advertising the offer. Yet when we went in no offer!! Don't advertise an offer just to get people in, if it isn't on 😡😡😡

Called her for a drink. We sat outside but undercover. Patio heaters were on and blankets provided. A large choice of cocktails.

This was a great find. Love the Decor and atmosphere. The staff are really friendly, helpful and attentive. We stopped for a lunch and shared a board with some extra bread. It was the perfect amount and tasted fantastic with great presentation. The coffee was really good and the non alcoholic cocktail was spot on. Cannot fail this place.

Visited for my birthday and left feeling underwhelmed. For a venue charging premium prices—£15 for a cocktail, no indication of volume—the service felt surprisingly indifferent. Staff were cool to the point of being dismissive, and the tall chairs were more punishment than perch. Although children are permitted in the outdoor area until 7pm, we were alas made to feel like second-class guests. A splash of overpriced liquid and a side of discomfort—unfortunately, that was the cherry on top of an experience I won’t be repeating.

Nestled by the serene waters of Bowness-on-Windermere, Boardwalk Bar and Grill is a delightful lakeside spot that invites you to unwind while savoring mouthwatering dishes. With a charming terrace that boasts breathtaking views of the lake, it’s an ideal venue for everything from romantic dinners to casual lunches with friends or family. The menu features an array of favorites including juicy steaks, hearty burgers, and classic hot dogs, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Great service, great food, great atmosphere, provided treats and water for my dog and even sold dog meals! Steak was cooked to correct temp, the steak sandwich was delicious, and the ribs fell off the bone. Staff very friendly and reasonable prices, would definitely recommend this place

We recently returned to this lovely spot after first visiting four years ago, and we’re happy to say the food is still just as great—delicious and beautifully presented, bringing back fond memories of our previous visit. The terrace is a real highlight, offering stunning views out over the lake and the yacht dock—perfect for a relaxing lunch or dinner with a view. Service was warm and attentive, and they were especially accommodating of our dog, which we really appreciated. The only small gripe would be the noticeable price increase compared to our last visit. That said, with everything that’s happened in recent years—COVID, inflation, and rising costs—it’s understandable, and probably to be expected. All in all, a lovely experience in a beautiful setting. We’ll definitely be back again.

The menu is well done, popular dishes we tried were the pulled pork, cock a doodle pink burger, chocolate smoothies, larger. The portion size is satisfactory. The fish and chips were very well done. The restaurant has a nice view overlooking the lake, the ambience is nice and the service is timely, courteous and great. FYI: it’s one the places BeardMeetsFood did the burger challenge, it’s well worth a try. P.S couldn’t add the picture of the chocolate smoothie since I inhaled it in 10 seconds.

Where to begin!! Upon booking there was a section for "special notes/comments", I had wrote that on the day I was proposing to my now fiancé and that if possible we could have a table with a view, they didn't disappoint! Upon arrive all staff were congratulatory to our engagement, Upon seating we received a complementary glass of prosecco and a card of congratulations. Soon after ordering our starters (calamari and halloumi which was delicious 😋) it was with us so quick we was shocked in a very good way, for mains we had 2x 12oz rib eye steaks, after 15yrs of catering experience we have never tasted such a well cooked steaks! Chef's my hat off too you thank you. This was a truely amazing venue for our special occasion! To everyone at Boardwalk Bar & Grill thank so much from the bottom of our hearts for such an amazing meal, service, attention to detail and just thank you, your establishment forever has a special in our hearts and stomachs 😂 thank you again!

I loved the fish and chips, and my Guinness and zero cocktail was great too. They have a huge selection of drinks, and the place has an amazing view. The staff are very lovely and kind. I also really appreciated that some drinks on the menu support donations to a breast cancer association — such a thoughtful touch. Highly recommended! 🍻✨

From your entrance into the restaurant to your table the staff are so welcoming. Then you get fantastic views of the Lake before you look at the menu , I enjoyed the steak as pictured cooked to perfection I will add. The staff are so attentive to your eating experience we were made so welcome and relaxed during our visit . This restaurant is now on my fav list 😋

A very beautiful location with a great plus! What made me choose this place was that it’s right by the lake and also because of their Early Bird special: two courses for £22, three courses for £26, which I think is excellent and very convenient. The only downside was that I came with my dog (2.5 kg) and was told we could only sit downstairs, not upstairs. The upstairs tables are much nicer, which was why I originally wanted to sit there. Perhaps they could consider making the upstairs area dog-friendly. Also, it would be great if they could add more options to the starters or main courses. If you visit more than once, the choices can feel a bit limited; for example, Piri Piri isn’t for everyone and besides fish and chips or a burger, there aren’t many other options. Adding more variety would give customers more to choose from. The service was exceptional and the food was very good. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back!

Indian restaurant
Lake Raj is a popular Indian restaurant located near the Lakes, offering a wide variety of Indian, Asian and Balti dishes. It has received numerous positive reviews and accolades for its excellent service and delicious food. The staff is known for being friendly and attentive, creating a lovely atmosphere for diners. The restaurant is also conveniently located near spa hotels and cottages, making it an ideal dining option for visitors to the area.
I had an excellent experience at this restaurant. The staff were attentive and handled everything with great care—they even warmed the plates for my lemon rice and lamb tikka korma, which was a thoughtful touch. After the meal, they offered a warm wet towel and surprised me with a complimentary birthday cake when I mentioned I was traveling to the Lake District for my birthday. There was a small hiccup with the bill—it should have been £24.70, and I asked them to round it to £25 as a tip. However, I was accidentally charged £35. I chose to view it optimistically, as covering the food, service, and a generous tip altogether. Despite that, the overall experience, service, and atmosphere were wonderful. It was absolutely worth dining here.

Lake Raj Bangladeshi Restaurant Review Food (4/5) While the food was enjoyable, it wasn’t outstanding. The prawn puree starter had a generous portion of prawns, though the puree itself was not as soft and flaky as expected. The main courses (mix grills, lamb chops, chicken biryani, and prawn bhuna) were solid but didn’t surpass previous experiences. Service (5/5) Exceptional service with highly attentive staff. Plates were cleared quickly after the starter, and hot plates were promptly provided for the main course. Atmosphere (4/5) The restaurant’s exterior was appealing, but the interior decor didn’t quite match the expectations set by the outside. However, the facilities, including the clean toilet, were well-maintained. Overall, Lake Raj offers a pleasant dining experience with great service, decent food, and a comfortable atmosphere.

We had a meal at Lake Raj whilst visiting the Lake District. We've visited on previous occasions where we have been impressed with the experience. This visit was no different. I had a wonderful experience at lake raj restaurant! The food was delicious, full of authentic flavor, fresh, and perfectly spiced. But what really made the visit stand out was the service. Enjoyed a date night here visiting Lake District. Ordered a spicy chicken biryani, lamb kharai, chicken masala and a saag aloo with buttered naan. Was insanely tasty & hosts were super lovely. Halal friendly and lovely cosy area.

Booked a table for 2x. Prices for the beer is extortionate, lamb tikka starter was very very fatty / chewy as though not cooked properly. ( lamb can be chewy but not like you could chew it for a month ) Felt very rushed and the staff were just walking around as if they didn’t want to be there. Atmosphere mood was very low and not very welcoming at all. I also looked around and staff members did ask people how there food was…. Why didn’t you ask us? Is it just as of when you feel like it? For such a location you should all be dressed smart where as the one lad had curry all Over his sleeves on his white shirt. Take pride in what you do and welcome customers for a great experience in a great location in the UK. To eat popadoms / starters and mains all in less than an hour is very rushed food! Very disappointed. And for £56 I feel Iv had my wallet dipped.

Specialty Museums
Located in Backbarrow, Cumbria, England, the Lakeland Motor Museum is a captivating tribute to the history of road transport. With over 30,000 exhibits including classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedal cars spanning over a century of motoring history. The museum also features special collections such as the Isle of Man TT and the Campbell Bluebird.
The museum sits on the banks of the River Leven and just off the A590. On my most recent stay in the Lake District I visited historical houses and gardens, Lakes Aquarium, went on several walks to enjoy stunning views over the fells and lakes. Looking back over the week,Lakeland Motor Museum stood out as the No 1 highlight. The large car park is free, useful if just visiting the cafe. Paid £14.50 for entrance including a souvenir guidebook. As you enter the main hall it's almost sensory overload, there is just so much to see. It really feels like an explosion of colour . There is a laid out route around the exhibits and it is tempting to readily rush to take them in. If you can resist? I recommend savouring everyone of them on display, there is absolutely no padding and everything deserves to be here. It's not just the big items, there are nostalgic smaller displays to reminice over. I even found an example of my first moped and the Mk4 Triumph Spitfire reminded me of my own Mk3 from 40 years ago. This is a museum to savouring even if you need to take a break 1/2 way and visit the cafe. Check 1st they will re-admit you. Cafe Ambio seves home made food. Fresh scone and cakes etc. You can sit inside or on the outside terrace and enjoy the views over the river. Before leaving the museum, head over to the Cambell Bluebird Exhibition. The machines are impressive but for me it was a reminder that with determination you can achieve what others think impossible.

Lakeland Motor Museum – A Timeless Journey Through Motoring History! The Lakeland Motor Museum is an absolute delight for anyone with even the slightest interest in cars, bikes, or the history of transportation. Nestled in a picturesque riverside setting in the Lake District, this museum offers far more than just a collection of old vehicles — it tells the story of human creativity, engineering progress, and the evolution of travel. From elegant vintage cars to quirky micro vehicles and shining motorcycles, every exhibit is thoughtfully displayed with detailed information and a touch of nostalgia. One of the museum’s biggest highlights is the Bluebird Exhibition, which celebrates the legendary speed record attempts by Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald Campbell. Seeing the replicas and learning about their daring journeys adds an inspiring historical dimension that leaves you in awe. There’s also an interesting display of bicycles, pedal cars, and transport memorabilia that bring back the charm of a bygone era. The staff are incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do, making the visit even more engaging. The on-site café by the river offers great food and a relaxing spot to unwind, and the gift shop has lovely souvenirs for all ages. Whether you’re a car enthusiast, a history lover, or simply someone who enjoys exploring unique places, the Lakeland Motor Museum is a must-visit destination. It’s educational, nostalgic, and full of charm — a perfect mix of mechanical beauty and storytelling that captures the true spirit of motoring through time. 🚗🏍️🏁

Wonderful exhibition, so many cars and memorabilia. The museum is situated in an old warehouse that made Blue powder for the washing of whites. The Campbell exhibition was very well set up too. A great place to visit for car enthusiasts and non car enthusiasts. There is a Cafe on site that is reasonably priced with nice food, freshly cooked on site.

Visited with my wife following a day of trains & boats on Lake Windermere. I didn't plan far enough ahead but was happy to pay full admission for this. A fantastic exhibition of vehicles, parts, tools & automobilia. The vehicles are in stunning period condition and are a credit to their former owners. Motor cars having their own A4 crib sheet on model history and quirks of the vehicle stood in front of you. Cars, bicycles & motorcycles get a fair shake at their own space including an upstairs bike exhibition. Archival Pathé News reels, advertisements, metal garage signs & packaging from the ages really flesh out the history of the museum. A short walk away on the same site is a tribute to The Campbells & their recording breaking Bluebird Machines. Although full size replicas it goes a long way to help you imagine the grit & determination of those visionary men. Certainly the museum is a worthwhile visit if you have a few days up in the Lake District.

Great little museum, with something different. Welcoming and a nice cafe and gifts. Personally I found ypu where alot closer to the exhibits than other museums, and it was nice to be able to lean into the cars etc. Not to busy so good for photos. A Brilliant Family Day Out at Lakeland Motor Museum (Visited Early 2025) We visited Lakeland Motor Museum earlier this year as a family — and this review’s long overdue. We’ve eaten nearby and driven past the signs plenty of times, but only recently stopped in properly. Until now we hadn’t really used reviews, so we’re catching up where it counts. A Nostalgic Treasure Trove Housed in the old Reckitt’s Blue Dye Works in Backbarrow, the museum is packed with an incredible mix of vehicles, memorabilia, signs, tools, and themed scenes. There are beautifully restored classic cars, motorbikes, bicycles, mopeds, and displays recreating old workshops and garages with period mannequins and signage. Everything’s laid out with care and clear passion. It isn’t just a hall of cars — it’s a full immersion into the culture of motoring, engineering, and British road history. Donald Campbell & the Spirit of Speed One of the most powerful parts of the visit was the Campbell Bluebird exhibition in the separate riverside building. It showcases the incredible history of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell, their record-breaking achievements, and Donald’s final attempt at Coniston. There’s a full-size replica of the Bluebird CN7 and an in-depth look at the K7 hydroplane — along with an original AC Aceca that Donald owned. It’s respectfully done, atmospheric, and hard not to be moved by. Even without prior knowledge, you come away feeling the weight and ambition of what they tried to do. Smooth, Well-Paced Experience Entry price: Reasonable for what’s on offer — especially when you take your time with it. Parking: Easy, right outside. Café: Café Ambio next door is a handy extra, especially if the weather holds and you can sit outside by the river. Accessibility: Well thought out throughout the site, with clear access and lifts where needed. Why It Works So Well Not overwhelming, but thorough. Great layout — the flow works and keeps you engaged. Clearly maintained with pride and enthusiasm by people who know their subject. Plenty to see without feeling cluttered or repetitive. Final Thoughts For us, this was one of the most rewarding museum visits in recent memory. It strikes the right tone — detailed and knowledgeable without being dry. Whether you’re into cars or not, it’s hard not to be drawn in by the sheer scope and atmosphere of the place. We’ll be back again without hesitation — and we’re happy to finally be adding our voice to its growing list of well-earned 5-star reviews.
Phil K — Google review
Wonderful place to take motor enthusiasts and children with similar passion. Reasonably priced and not overwhelming. Take your time and enjoy the motoring history. The ticket also gets you to the additional exhibition which is well worth the 30sec walk.

Fell Foot, a charming Victorian garden located at the south end of Windermere, offers a range of family-friendly activities. The park features picturesque views of Windermere and several Grade II-listed buildings, including a converted boathouse that now serves as a cafe. Visitors can enjoy picnics, games, and boating on the lake while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
This spot is a true gem—lush greenery, peaceful surroundings, and so clean, all framed by breathtaking mountain views. It's an absolute must-visit, especially for a refreshing walk to soak in the beauty. Plus, parking is convenient, making your visit completely stress-free. Definitely worth exploring!

We visited Fell Foot last weekend with the kids and had a lovely time. The park is beautifully maintained with stunning views of Lake Windermere, perfect for a relaxing family day out. The kids enjoyed running around and we had a small picnic by the water, which made for a peaceful afternoon. There are good facilities, and it’s a great spot for both play and relaxation. The only downside was the parking — quite expensive for just a few hours, which was a bit of a letdown. Still, overall a great place to spend time with family and enjoy nature.

Arrived late afternoon, in early October & the Saturday crowds had gone home. No issues finding a spot in the car park at all. The machines use the Just Park app so paying for parking was easy @ £6 for 2 hours a little on the expensive side but worth it. Walked down to the lake edge & it was just perfect. Found a bench by one of the slip ways & changed for my swim. Water was 14°C, clear as a bell & there was hardly anyone around, other than another swimmer & a couple of SUP users. Stayed in for about 25 mins & changed on the side. Although it was quite late once I had got changed the loo’s by the cafe were still open which was handy. Beautiful autumnal colours & an amazing golden hour.

Fell Foot is a fantastic spot on Windermere, especially for National Trust members (free parking!). Beautiful setting with loads of green space to set up for the day. You can launch your paddleboard for free, and if you pay for the activity hub, you get access to changing rooms and showers — really handy after being on the water. There are free toilets on-site and plenty of space, though it can get very busy, especially on sunny days. Also worth noting there’s a friendly Parkrun every Saturday at 9:00am. Great place for a full day out with family or friends!

Lakes Aquarium – A Wonderful Underwater Adventure for All Ages! The Lakes Aquarium, located at Lakeside near Windermere, is a fantastic experience that combines learning, fun, and the natural beauty of aquatic life. Quicker walk through than expected and didn't seem to give a possibility to walk through again. Lovely little shop at the end. It would have been nicer to have more interactive sessions like with the starfish area could involve a hands on session throughout the day or a feeding view in the big fish area

We weren’t sure what to expect from Lakes Aquarium, but it turned out to be a really enjoyable visit. It’s not huge, but there’s loads packed into the space — otters, rays, frogs, fish from around the world, and a cool underwater tunnel with local species like pike and perch. The otters were a highlight, especially at feeding time. The tanks are well kept, and everything feels clean and well looked after. There’s a nice flow to the place and plenty of signs with interesting facts. It’s perfect for families — kids loved it, but we found ourselves enjoying it just as much. Good value for money, and you can pair it with the steam train or a boat ride nearby to make a full day of it. Staff were friendly, the gift shop had some fun stuff (not too overpriced), and overall it made for a really lovely stop. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area and looking for something fun and educational that doesn’t take up the whole day.

Was pleasantly surprised when visiting, it was a bit bigger than I expected given the reasonable price! Lots to see, the whole family really enjoyed it. Took just under an hour from start to finish. The location is beautiful right on the lake. Small car park at the front and a larger one to the back so parking was fine. Would recommend if your visiting the area with children. We bought tickets in advance.

We had a fantastic time at the aquarium! The exhibits were beautifully designed and full of fascinating marine life, from colorful tropical fish to majestic sharks and graceful stingrays. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions, making it both fun and educational. Highlights included the interactive touch pools and the underwater tunnel — a truly immersive experience. A great day out for all ages — highly recommended!

Surprisingly good. It is larger than I expected making use of multiple floors inside the building. The Otters, for me, are the stars! They are great to see. My youngest son was entertained looking at all the fish and animals, and my eldest also liked the fish but was kept entertained by trying to answer the quiz sheet handed to him. Great value for money.

Went the aquarium last weekend and it was better than expected. Plenty to see and do. No queue. Many more animals than a standard aquarium and the bridge over the water as well as the tunnel under it were my favourite part. Very reasonably priced too.

Hill Top, the Beatrix Potter House, is a charming seventeenth-century farmhouse filled with the author's personal belongings exactly as she left them. Visitors can see her boots and hat by the fireside chair and hear the ticking of her kitchen clock. The cottage garden is a delightful mix of wild flowers, herbs, fruit, and vegetables. Located in Near Sawrey, this National Trust property was purchased by Beatrix with her book royalties and later entrusted to the National Trust for preservation.
Such an idyllic setting for a one off experience. Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, the views are just spectacular. It was so enjoyable visiting Beatrix Potter's home to see where her inspiration for the wonderful stories she wrote was found. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and with visiting times done on a rota, it ensured that there weren't too many people inside the house. It was lovely to be able to get up close to see all her possessions and we were even able to sit in the window seats to look through the window facing her vegetable patch. Highly recommended.

You can imagine Beatrice in all the rooms and outside sitting in her garden. Full of things she loved and the stories she wrote, the house is big (lowish ceilings) and interesting but lots of visitors make the rooms seem small. Dog friendly, a few benches in her garden to enjoy a picnic or a drink\bite from the mobile cafe, toilets down a step. 2hrs parking is ample for looking round, so arrive a few minutes before your booked time, check in and collect your token for the house. Book and gift shop plus a house had cake for £2 and another a few plants for sale.

Beatrix Potters beloved farmhouse. You need to book car working if visiting here via the National Trust website. It’s a nice way to spend and hour reminiscing on the books you had in childhood. Beatrix used the farmhouse and local area as inspiration for her famous children’s story books. You see story boards around the side demonstrating this. The house is interesting with lots of the original contents on display. These are refreshments, toilets and a shop on the site.

My visit to Hill Top was a cherished return after 25 years, and it was just as magical as I remembered. It was a joy to walk through Beatrix Potter's gardens and home, which truly sparked my imagination. I was especially excited to find a Peter Rabbit book for my grandson, a perfect memento of the visit. The grounds are pet-friendly, which was great for our group. However, dogs are not allowed inside the house itself, so we took turns visiting to make sure everyone got a chance to see it. The views and the small village are incredibly quaint and charming. I highly recommend stopping at the pub located between the car park and the property entrance—it’s a great spot. A major tip for visitors is to book your tickets online in advance. We purchased our tickets the day before and got the last two available spots for the entire day. I would have been so disappointed to have traveled all the way to the Lake District and not gotten in! We booked the last time slot at 2:30 PM, and it seemed to have the fewest crowds, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

The main attraction here is to be in the same spaces that Beatrix Potter occupied and see how those spaces inspired the writing of some of her books. Having copies of those books open and available at points through the house was a nice touch which added an extra level of understanding to the place. The gift shop just before the exit is well stocked and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Some exclusive items here that can only be bought at the shop itself. They are not cheap but I would imagine a dedicated fan will not be deterred by the larger numbers involved.

Lovely place, well looked after by the national trust with almost all the original furnishings. So interesting to see more about Beatrix's life. Got the ferry across from Bowness and walked up, a bit of road walking at times but a beautiful walk.

The house is beautifully set for visitors to see how Beatrix Potter lived and worked. The garden is just as I imagined. Beatrix Potter did so many good things for children with her books and pictures. Her work with people in the Lake District helped to keep it looking wonderful for generations to enjoy. I am so glad the NT takes so much care of Hill Top. Thanks to Joey’s for the yummy coffee.

Its a quiet, small and beautiful garden to visit if you are in the area & a NT member. However it’s missing the usual NT tea room, facilities & information to make worthwhile a re-visit as we only spent 1.5hr there… which included a long sit in the garden.

Quayside Bowness is a charming nautically themed pub and restaurant that offers a comforting menu while providing stunning views of the marina at the lake's edge. Situated on a hill overlooking the village, this traditional pub welcomes dogs and walkers, offering classic Robinsons Ales and a varied food menu. The restaurant boasts delicious locally sourced food and an extensive drinks selection, making it an ideal spot for dining with family and friends any night of the week.
It’s a fabulous place located beside Lake Windermere. We were lucky, to get the table facing the lake. They have outdoor tables on either side of restaurant. Lakeside seating is worth exploring. They have continental, English and Korean dishes. There are some signature dishes worth trying. Vegetarian options are also good. Cocktails options are many. Parking is just opposite to the restaurant. Plenty of spaces. Pay and display.

Lovely place overlooking Windermere. We were watching the boats and cruises pass by while enjoying our meal. It was beautiful. The service was good. The place was quite crowded and loud but we were able to talk. There was a lot of options for food and they also had Sunday specials including dessert. Pizza was good though a bit oily. Wings were delicious. Sandwich was quite good. Service was fast and we got served our food without waiting too long. Staff was polite and respectful. Lovely place to enjoy your meal overlooking Windermere.

Amazing food! Amazing drinks! Amazing service! Incredible playlist! The staff are so friendly. We felt welcome as soon as we walked through the door. They’re very helpful, and very nice. Usually I can’t find nice onion rings. I was very happy tonight. They were so nice. Crispy, thin and very nicely plated! For the amount of food we ordered, it was very reasonably priced. Thanks for a great night! x

We choose this restaurant for its beautiful lake view as the sun set and was not disappointed. Their wonderful service staff made everybody feel right at home. What's more important - the food was excellent. The Peri Peri Spatcock chicken was great, as was the seabass, finished off with the delightful apple pie.

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming village of High Newton, Heft is a delightful transformation of an old pub into a sophisticated dining experience that opened its doors in the summer of 2021. The brainchild of local couple Kevin and Nicola Tickle, this restaurant showcases their deep-rooted connection to Cumbria's culinary heritage. With Kevin’s impressive background at renowned establishments like L'Enclume and Forest Side, diners can expect a menu that reflects both innovation and tradition.
I made this reservation after searching for a nice place to visit to finish our holiday in The Lake District. For us Heft was a 25/30min drive from our accommodation. We were not disappointed, everything from the bread and butter to our desserts was fantastic. We had the Sunday 2 course menu and chose the beef which was melt in the mouth moorish! We ordered additional sides, definitely more than we needed but wanted to try everything that appealed to us. Heft is located in a lovely spot, even if you just wanted to sit outside with a glass of something refreshing. I would definitely visit again and would recommend to anyone in the area to try.

Absolutely superb lunch. Every element on point. Can't pick a favourite. Full flavours. But not over the top or crowding each other out. Great service. Beautiful building, sympathetically and stylistically decorated. Straight on our list as one to come back to soon - even with all the amazing choice in south Cumbria. And one area where most high end restaurants fail badly is their beer list. But Heft excels here. All local. All superb. Un matched choice in any top end restaurant I've ever been in.

Just called in for a bar snack and a great pint of Lakes Brew Pale Ale. First class friendly service, quality newspapers to read, plenty of room ~ 14:20 Friday afternoon. There seems to be enough on street parking for everyone.

Great food, great customer service and great atmosphere. Went for the Su day lunch, can't recommend the gnocchi and beef enough. The truffle mash is great too, and loved the bearnaise sauce. The special gravy was decent. The blueberry old fashioned was nice, but a bit too fruity for me. Definitely recommend this place and worth several visits.

Me and my partner booked this as our last treat on holiday and it did not disappoint. We had the 2 course Sunday roast and ordered the beef plus sides. It was a large portion and we were able to take what we didn't finish home which we enjoyed just as much the next day! The service is excellent and the wait staff were lovely.
Anna D — Google review
Lovely country location. The front of the restaurant is rustic, the main dining is done in a modern theme, I preferred the rustic look. The food was not amazing. Some dishes were salty and flavors were either too strong. Nothing was delightful. The food presentation was to a hight standard, but the proof is in the eating. Sadly we did not enjoy the food.
The S — Google review
A roast dinner for the history books. Stayed around Heft on holiday and thought the Sunday lunch menu and reviews looked promising. Ordered a few sides to go with their signature steak roast such as the mashed potato, sauerkraut and mac and cheese and all were fantastic. However the beef was the star of the show. Super tender and flavourful. Between the two of us we ordered too much but made sure to finish off the steak as it was too good to go to waste. Haven't tried their tasting menu but if it's half as good as the Sunday menu I'm sure it's worthy of all those awards.
Jenny — Google review
We were given a lot of good reviews for this place, so our our name on the waitlist and managed to get a last minute reservation for Sunday lunch. £39.50 for two courses is pretty competitive for a restaurant with one Michelin star, however, whilst the main courses were excellent, we were disappointed with the desert. We both had the lemon tart, which was far too big, the tart casing too hard and the lemon curd a bit soft; all in all not a cohesive desert.

The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is a quaint establishment located in the Lake District village, known for its unique and delectable gingerbread invented by Victorian cook Sarah Nelson in 1854. The shop also offers an assortment of other treats such as rum butter, fudge, mint cake, toffees, chocolates, and conserves. The historic shop continues to produce the renowned gingerbread using Nelson's original recipe and has garnered a global following.
Tiny shop. The best fresh baked gingerbread biscuit. No preservatives. You can buy just one or packages of 6 or 12. They also have chocolates, fudge, lip balm, lotion and much more. Their is a little bit of a wait in line but well worth it.
Mc S — Google review
This place can get very busy, as it seems to be on most visitors lake district to do list (myself included) Got here early though and was able to walk straight in with no wait. Arrive pre 10am to give yourself best chance of avoiding the crowds. The interior of the shop is a feast for the senses. Exuding Olde worlde charm from every corner, and the air is thick with the smell of the gingerbread. To taste it has very little in common with the gingerbread we are all used to, and is so much the better for it. A very dense and chewy texture that almost borders on crunchy. Warm flavor that lingers nicely after the initial mouthful. Does not keep well, but for me that didn't matter as I would have eaten it all long before thinking of keeping any. Definitely try to tick this box on your list, you'll be glad you did.
Mark D — Google review
A lovely callback to the classic, one assumes! The shop was fantastic fun on a pouring rainy day. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and quick. The queue does not reflect their speed, as the doors are just a bit narrow as it’s a very old building.

Tasty, needed to go back for some more after trying it. Long queue but move fast. Daffodil garden and Wordworth family graves are nearby. Recommend to sit down and enjoy the gingerbread with the coffee at Grasmere Tea Garden, nice view and flat white!
Yaran L — Google review
This is such a quaint, iconic place and must see in Gracemere. The gingerbread is delicious as well as the dairy milk chocolate with ginger bits and affordable price too. The chocolate with pumpkin spice was my least favourite and for acquired taste. The queue is long and no shleter when it's raining. There is no seating area, which would've enhanced the positive experience. Nonetheless, I would visit again.
MS A — Google review
We’re not huge fans of gingerbread in general, but having heard so much about this famous one, we had to try it. And it didn’t disappoint! It was very decadent, soft, not too overpowering ginger flavour, a mix between biscuit and cake. A must try if you’re in the area.

Grasmere Gingerbread Shop 🌟 A must-visit spot famous for its unique, spicy-sweet Grasmere Gingerbread. The aroma and flavor are legendary! Expect a queue, but the quick service and delicious, historic treat make it absolutely worth the wait. Perfect takeaway for a Lake District snack. Buy 12 pack otherwise you will regret your decision!

Any trip to the Lake District isn't complete without a trip to the Sarah Nelson Gingerbread Shop in Grasmere. Wordsworth Grasmere is a must-visit for literature enthusiasts, as it was the former home of renowned poet William Wordsworth. The site offers guided tours, a museum, and beautiful gardens where Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy once planted flowers collected during their walks. Nearby attractions like Dove Cottage and Allan Bank also provide insight into the poet's life and inspiration.
Absolutely amazing! Would love to visit again. Our guide was a very sweet girl and explained things well. Got very emotional thinking of the days when William and Dorothy were together here and created so many wonderful memories. Being a literature student, I enjoyed every moment here, the house, the table by the window where he sat and wrote. Every thing there reminded me of the past and I would love to walk on the same path again someday.

They’ve done an excellent job with this museum, creating modern galleries to tell the story of both Wordsworth’s who made Dove Cottage their home, plus a space for contemporary exhibitions, in addition to regular tours of the house and garden access. There are handy lockers beyond the entrance, gender-neutral toilets and a lift inside the museum if you need it. Free entry with an Art Pass or Historic Houses membership too. My only suggestion would be to install cycle parking somewhere on site. If there is some, please make sure signage is clear!

A fascinating visit to one of the main homes of William Wordsworth. With a booked tour, you can visit Dove Cottage and then onto the museum. They also have quite a nice cafe, with plenty of seating. We are not creatives or well versed in poetry, but the environment is good with all types of people. Creatives will particularly enjoy it

What a dream come true moment for me!! Wordsworth is an absolute favourite of mine and visiting Grasmere, Lake district is like a pilgrimage for me. The cottage is kept beautifully and the museum is small but interesting. I recommend that u take the 10am or 10.40am tour to avoid crowds. The staff is pleasant and kind
Parizad M — Google review
An authentic step into Wordsworth’s world The Dove Cottage tour is wonderfully authentic—stepping inside truly feels like going back in time. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer any question about Wordsworth, his life, and the period. The on-site art suite adds a creative touch to the visit, and overall, it’s a very engaging and inspiring experience. The garden is quite small, and the café is simple, but Dove Cottage alone is absolutely worth the trip. Booking ahead is essential to secure your spot for the Dove cottage tour with specific starting time, however you can come for the museum, garden, cafe, woodland anytime during the open time.
Serena L — Google review
Our visit to Dove Cottage was one of the most moving experiences of our Lake District trip. The tour was beautifully delivered by Holly, whose passion and confidence brought Wordsworth’s world to life. As newlyweds, we were touched when she kindly offered to take our photo on the bench in the garden such a thoughtful gesture that made the visit even more memorable, it was one of the best photo of our honeymoon. The Wordsworth film at the beginning brought everything together and genuinely moved us. A deeply emotional and inspiring experience we’ll never forget.
H S — Google review
Our visit begins with a step back in time: the guide paints a picture of Grasmere in the early 1800s, when William Wordsworth lived here with his beloved sister, Dorothy. Dorothy’s journals, alive with observations of nature and daily life, often sparked the very verses that made her brother famous. A short film follows, drawing us deeper into Wordsworth’s world, his reverence for nature, his radical belief in the worth of every human being, and his ability to transform the simplest moments into timeless poetry. Crossing the threshold of Dove Cottage feels like entering their lives. The rooms are intimate and welcoming, with much of the original furniture still in place, including a striking grandfather clock that seems to tick with the weight of history. Here, William and Dorothy found joy in the simplest pursuits: long walks through the fells, tending their garden, writing late into the night, and sharing conversation with friends. Later, Mary, William’s wife, joined them, and the little house echoed with the laughter and footsteps of children. The pretty cottage garden, bursting with colour and still so peaceful today, was both their sanctuary and their muse. Standing there, it is easy to imagine how its quiet beauty found its way into William’s verse. From the cottage we move to the exhibition, where Wordsworth’s world comes alive through handwritten letters, notebooks, and first editions. Passages from his works—including The Prelude, his poetic autobiography, are woven through the displays, reminding us of his deep spiritual bond with nature and humanity. Reading about his gentleness, compassion, and commitment to kindness, I can’t help but reflect on how much we might learn today from the way the Wordsworths lived. Our final stop is an unexpected delight: the studio of resident artist Stacey Joy. Her striking drawings, inspired by Wordsworth’s poetry, invite us to explore time and memory in new ways. Visitors are encouraged to contribute their own ideas to an evolving artwork—a living conversation between past and present. Stacey poses the question: How do we interpret memories and time? It lingers with me. I picture memory as a spiral, looping backwards and forwards through a lifetime—so different from the slow, fragmented progression of my mum, whose dementia steadily erodes her recent memory, pulling her further into the past. The idea of capturing these contrasting journeys through art feels both poignant and powerful. Leaving Dove Cottage, I feel not only enriched by the story of an extraordinary poet, but deeply moved by the reminder of his humanity. William Wordsworth left us a legacy of literature, yes, but also an enduring example of how to live: with kindness, humility, and reverence for the beauty in people and the world around us.

Absolutely utterly impressed with the accessibility within this place. As an ex SEND teacher who has ADHD I was completely blown away by the attention of care for any young learners with additional needs. There were sensory bags with toys, sensory walks, ear defenders, social stories (which even myself as a 34 year old found helpful) and plenty of activities throughout. It was also great to see wheelchair access. Thank you so much for such attention to care! It is very rare to see this but it made me feel valued as i contemplated carrying some sensory toys for myself!

The house and its beautiful gardens are open throughout the year for exploration, providing couples with an opportunity to see where Wordsworth wrote many of his famous works. Visitors can enjoy stunning lake views and take in the serene surroundings that inspired some of Wordsworth's most beloved poetry.
A beautifully kept house and tended to garden. Lots of interesting artifacts and a very informative snapshot into Wordsworth's family life. Such a shame we were the only visitors for the majority of the time we were there! The ladies in the tea room were lovely and the soup and cakes were fantastic. Definitely worth a visit, the gardens (in Autumn) were a highlight and I can imagine they're beautiful in all seasons.

Holehird Gardens is a hidden gem in the Lake District, spanning 10 acres of beautifully landscaped hillside. Managed by the Lakeland Horticultural Society, it boasts Victorian-style greenhouses and has received recognition with an RHS Partner award. The gardens overlook Lake Windermere and showcase an impressive variety of flora, including rhododendrons, hydrangeas, alpines, and six National Plant Collections.
April 15,2025: Beautiful fragrant garden. Well layered and everything is blending in without any gaps. Lots of plant collections. We had a lovely walk. Good spot in between the lake and mountains. See some adorable lambs and sheep’s next door. Very much recommended. Free admission.

Beautiful gardens. The facility is run and maintained by volunteers who were exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. It's worth a visit if you are in the area. There is no set entrance fee, they only ask for a donation. Some of the gardens would not be suitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues. Tea and coffee can be purchased for £2 a cup. You are better off pressing "large" which will be a proper cup full (medium gives half a cup). There are lavatories available behind reception.

The National Trust - Claife Viewing Station and Windermere West Shore offers a picturesque experience with scenic lake vistas, a courtyard, and a cafe along a 4-mile trail. The station dates back to the 18th century and played an important role in the Picturesque movement, attracting tourists seeking beautiful views to sketch and paint. The viewing station's mock ruin structure became a landmark for tourists in the 1830s and 40s.
The view that unfolds is simply breathtaking. It's the kind of vista that makes you stop and just breathe. What I truly appreciated was how easy it was to access this little slice of paradise. The ferry made the journey seamless, and there weren't any arduous climbs or tricky paths once you arrived. It's perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful escape without needing to be a seasoned hiker. Spending time there felt incredibly calming. There's a quiet beauty to the landscape, the still water reflecting the surrounding fells. It's the kind of place where you can just sit, soak it all in, and let the world's worries drift away. It truly felt like a moment of pure peace, a chance to reconnect with nature and just be. If you're looking for a beautiful view and a genuinely peaceful experience, the National Trust's Claife Viewing Station and Windermere West Shore is an absolute gem. I left feeling refreshed and utterly charmed.

Very pretty little viewing platform, with information boards depicting history on how the Georgians started to travel to the lake District to appreciate it's beauty and the structures they built. Nowadays the structure has deteriorated but the National Trust have allowed access with walkways so you can enjoy the same views. The stained glass windows are very pretty touch and the old window ledges downstairs provide some very scenic seating. The cafe makes very nice smoothies, with a selection of cakes and ice creams I believe with seating outside. The walk up is relatively short, a bit uneven (tree roots and rocks) and not very wheelchair accessible.

Little effort for massive reward! This is a beautiful spot with insane views! The walk is relatively easy - one option to come up a set of stairs, the other up via in incline through the courtyard. We were lucky enough to visit on a sunny, clear day so really did get the best of it! To get up to the actual viewing point you do have to climb up the stairs, however there are still excellent views without going up. Highly recommend a visit!

Great place to get some awesome pictures of lake windermere. Sadly we went when it was pouring rain, although it was still lovely and atmospheric, the views weren't as good as the could have been. Worth a visit even in the rain though. It's a very short walk from the national trust car park (and you don't have to walk along the narrow road) you take a forest road. Go up the steps to the viewing station or carry on the path to the cafe for some coffee and cake.

A jaw dropping view from this Windermere Claife. Very peaceful and calm. One of the best location to take photos from here. A hidden gem on the shores of Lake Windermere. The viewing station offers stunning panoramic views across the lake, especially through the coloured glass panels which make it a unique experience. It’s free to visit, with clear paths and plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. The short walk up is easy and very rewarding, and there’s a lovely café nearby for a break afterwards. Peaceful, scenic, and a perfect stop if you’re exploring the western side of Windermere.

Highly recommend visiting if you are coming to the Lake District. You can take the car ferry from the Bowness side, then it’s roughly a 10 minute walk from where this drops you off. It’s a short walk up to the top, and the view from the viewpoint is incredible for all 3 angles. Lovely cafe at the bottom too.

Great little walk from the car park to the viewing platform. If yku approach from the other side there's a wonderful little coffee shop with hot snacks and cakes .

Worth a visit for the beautiful views! Not far from the car park, nice walk through the trees and up the steps.

Restaurant
Nestled in a Grasmere village, The Jumble Room is a vibrant and relaxed restaurant that prides itself on using local and organic ingredients. While fine dining has made its mark in the Lakes, this eatery offers a more casual yet special dining experience. From spiced almond fritters to delectable desserts, the menu features delicate and delicious starters and satisfying puddings.
We had a amazing dinner here, our host Emily was so warm and welcoming. There's vegan options on the menu but she also made me some off the menu dishes which were really good. It has a great atmosphere I highly recommend!

Wow! What a wonderful evening. My wife and I were welcomed with a warm smile at the bar and shown to a cosy corner table, tucked beside a stack of nostalgic Desperate Dan comics from the ’90s. Our waiter, Ross, looked after us brilliantly – friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to chat with throughout the night. The food was outstanding: beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and faultless from start to finish. The Jumble Room really lives up to its name, a vibrant mix of quirky art, and vintage comic books, and an atmosphere that makes the whole place feel special. If you get the chance, don’t miss it. We certainly won’t, we’ll be back.

What. A. Meal. The food was flawless. The atmosphere was perfect. And I cannot begin to describe how amazing Emily, Ross and the rest of the lovely staff are as hosts. Warm, friendly, attentive and nothing is too much to ask. This is the second time we’ve been back here and there will definitely be many more to come. I cannot recommend the jumble room enough for honestly any occasion. We were a party of 7 and had three courses plus drinks and there was not a fault to be found. Thank you for having us!!

Food was incredible I had the courgette for starter And lamb and aubergine for main. Staff are super nice and its a lovely quirky place to eat and drink with awsome cocktails

Absolutely perfect! I couldn't think of a single way to improve it. The food was phenomenal with such unique depth of flavour. The decor was lovely and the service was absolutely fantastic. I could not recommend more highly!

Fantastic cosy eclectic atmosphere. Friendly welcoming attentive staff. Delicious cocktail and slow Lebanese lamb stew. Looked after me as a single diner.
Helen D — Google review
This restaurant is absolutely fantastic, literally the best meals we’ve had this year. The staff are friendly, engaging and amazing hosts. The food is beautifully prepared. I went straight to the mains and had a slow cooked Moroccan Bhaharat lamb stew, with aubergine which was extremely tasty. Fennel pomegranates and mint with it. My wife and daughter went for salmon with a lemongrass curry sauce and pak choi. Extremely fragrant and beautifully prepared. We had cocktails with it, and I particularly recommend the Bakewell tart (Amaretto with cherry and Prosecco). The puddings were great, we went for churros, and cheeses. A truly amazing evening, and thank you to the wonderful staff!

This resturant is a gem, where you are made to feel like part of the family the minute you walk through the door. Chrissy is a true artist. Her food and flavours are out of this world. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Emily was just as excited about our meals as we were. I absolutely LOVE the Jumble Room and we will be back. Such an awesome awesome treat. Good food, great people and a full dining experience in a setting that is eclectic. This little Gem of a resturant is a must!!!

Nestled by the marina, The Boathouse | Bar & Restaurant offers a bright and modern setting to savor global cuisine. Whether you're in town or at Bowness, you can relish stunning lakeside views while indulging in gourmet meals. The restaurant boasts an extensive menu featuring everything from nibbles and starters to main courses and desserts. This restaurant is brilliant ! The food is really tasty and prepared well😋 The staff are very friendly & patient too, they made our experience so lovely- thanks so much

We had a lovely meal here. Staff were friendly and even attentive to our dog giving him a treat and bringing water over to him. The food was mostly lovely. Wasn't so keen on the beef brisket sandwich, beef was hard at the ends couldnt even bite through it 🤣 The prawn and halloumi pasta special and fish and chips were very good. Food came out quickly. Would recommend eating here.
Izy — Google review
A really nice place to have some pub food with a view close to Bowness. The sweet and sour pork belly was very flavorful and the two mains also really great, even though a bit too oily. We had a fun night while also participating in the Thursday night pub quiz!
Chris — Google review
Great spot for lunch on the marina. Friendly staff and both indoor/outdoor seating available. Reasonably priced lunch options. Only suggestion would be to serve the Steak and Onion sandwich in a ciabatta roll rather than the sliced bread - it did not hold up well!
George C — Google review
Really pretty place, it was quite quiet during our visit which meant we got a lovely window seat looking out at the view. Staff were polite and attentive, and really great with my allergies too. Cocktails were delicious and well made made. My partner had Sweet & Sour Pork Belly Bites to start which were delicious! I had Creamy Mushrooms with Sour Dough & a Poached Egg and it was so yummy. For mains, I ordered the Thai Green Curry, and my partner had Fish & Chips. The curry was VERY spicy for Thai Green, so I struggled to eat it but the flavours were lovely. Partners chips were especially good, and overall all really nice! We didn't have space for dessert!

What a great little last minute find 💕 food was incredible, what you needed on a stormy and wet day. Amazing little find for our mini honeymoon 😌 Dog friendly and does great cocktails.

We were staying in one of the boathouses on the marina in February and called here on our first night for food and a drink. The staff were very friendly and the food was really good , I had the mussels which I really enjoyed. The Boathouse setting directly on the marina is very nice and it had some seating outside which I can imagine in the summer would be lovely.

We booked a table here for my husbands birthday as it looked lovely and had good reviews. It was a Sunday evening and the table was confirmed for 8pm. Upon arrival the restaurant looked lovely but was very quiet with just one table of 4 dining. The waiter was very pleasant and brought a birthday card and prosecco over for the husband to acknowledge his birthday, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately once seated we were advised the restaurant had sold out of many items and when looking at the menu there were other items missing that we had seen online. This left the menu too limited for us, as we had our 14yr old son with us too, and we chose to leave. We had tried to call and book the table however there was no answer so we had to book online. Had we been able to speak to someone they may have been able to pre warn us of the limited menu. A real shame as we had looked forward to a meal here for a special birthday.

The inn offers 11 fully refurbished en-suite rooms, each tastefully decorated and providing views across the garden towards Helm Crag. The cozy restaurant and bar provide a comfortable dining experience, with delicious breakfast included. The proprietor is known for being warm, friendly, and helpful. Guests can also enjoy outdoor seating for relaxation.
We went for dinner as a family after walking the dales way and everything was perfect. Lovely and friendly staff, beautiful cocktails and absolutely delicious, authentic and reasonably priced food. The goats cheese and apricot vegetable bake was to die for and even though I am vegetarian and usually don't like meat I was tempted to have a bite of my mum's Cumberland sausages, which were perfectly seasoned. The stick toffee pudding was the tastiest I have ever had as well. Couldn't recommend enough.

I just wanted to reach out and say what a fantastic Sunday lunch we just had with yourselves. The food was amazing and so delicious, it’s got to be one of the best roast dinner we’ve had at a restaurant and your staff are so friendly and welcoming. Thank you for taking the time to email back and to get us booked in. We will definitely be back next year when we visit the lakes again. Many thanks Cathy

Had a beautiful meal. In fact I think it was one of the best fish dishes I have ever tasted - duo of plaice. Cooked to perfection. Staff were very obliging too. Highly recommended.
Karen E — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal- which has followed trips to a number of Michelin starred restaurants in the last couple of weeks and a million miles away from eating in Dubai- as such it was great to enjoy some good honest grub. The suet pudding (very soft and flavoursome) and lamb in particular were excellent and just what was needed after a lovely day in the Lakes. Service was excellent and my wife and I had an enjoyable couple of hours. Thanks very much.
Christopher W — Google review
Food was excellent, can’t fault the roast, huge portions. However, one of the waiters kept putting on various comedic accents when serving us and this piss taking made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Lastly, we were overcharged c. £40 at first which was then rectified.
Robin M — Google review
This is probably the best roast we have ever had with only a couple of minor point to note but I think its well worth the money for it. Went for the rib of beef for 2, extra table with place mats ready for the ridiculous amount of food to come. Starter Soup was nice but under seasoned, nothing a good but of salt and pepper didn't sort out, rib of beef cooked beautifully with all the sides you would expect and all was great but 2 notes, cauliflower cheese had clumps of cheese which I love cheese and all good for that but wasn't even melted but a good crunch to it and really tasted the cauliflower, and the yorkshire pudding a bit of it was really think like a pancake but that what you get making them massive in parts I've found. Desert was great apple tart with custard, felt the custard was store bought but I like any kind of custard, and my wife had an excellent looking cheeseboard. Be prepared to eat because there is loads. We will be back....

A refined British style cuisine restaurant in the city center of Windermere. All food was great and the staff was very friendly. A highlight was the lamb rump, so tender and so juicy. No feeling of grease after eating the mains. Highly recommended!

We had dinner on a Saturday evening at this establishment. The food was excellent, very refined especially the lamb. The soup was very tasty. Downside would be their wine by the glass list, the options were too simple.

Really, really nice stuff. Loaf of bread and the butter were incredible. Particular thanks to the lovely lady who was so very nice to my children when they were being really difficult!

I ALWAYS make a beeline here when in Ambleside. Good hot food options, my favourite being the burrito- yummy 😋 prices are cheaper here than at other outlets in the area. Staff very friendly and happy atmosphere. This goes a long way, thank you 😊 🙏

Amazing food to takeaway! I went for the Burrito and it was substantial, tasty and surprisingly clean to eat on a bench in public. Definitely recommend the food counter. The shop has some delicious looking treats too!
