Modern British restaurant
European restaurant
Restaurant
Porto Restaurant in Bowness offers an elegant dining experience with a creative modern British menu and fixed price deals. Situated just five minutes from Lake Windermere, the restaurant provides a wide range of meals that deliver tastes from all around Europe in very British dishes. The calming bistro-style ambiance, complete with outdoor seating areas, allows guests to enjoy their meal while surrounded by the natural beauty of rolling fells.
Had an absolutely gorgeous lunch with my parents—it was my mom’s birthday. Our server was the cool Spanish guy, he was extremely considerate! Food was awesome and very reasonably priced considering its prime location in the town.

We had a fantastic dining experience at Porto Restaurant! The food was excellent across the board—flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. The mixed kofta stood out with its perfectly seasoned meat and juicy texture. The risotto was rich and creamy, cooked to perfection, and the grilled chicken sandwich was a satisfying choice—light yet full of flavor. What truly made the visit special was discovering their impressive kids’ menu. It was a nice surprise to find such a well-thought-out selection for little ones, offering both variety and quality—a rare find in many restaurants. Overall, a great spot for families or anyone looking to enjoy delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Great restaurant, I booked a table for my partners birthday. They decorated the table with a few birthday bits which was lovely of them and they didn’t have to do! The food just added to the experience, the belly pork and Cumbrian chicken was absolutely delightful. To finish things off, the brownie and ice cream was superb. Would recommend here to anyone visiting the Lakes! Thank you guys!

Beautiful dishes, fantastic service and a lovely atmosphere! Wonderful cocktails, the cod was spectacular and my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening!

Well presented food and pleasant service. Went here as the places on the waterside were crowded and we wanted something a bit more than pub grub. Particularly enjoyed the beef bourguinion profiterole.

What an amazing place. Ignore josh farrer, he must have given a bad review to get a free meal. Clown. The place is not like a working mens club at all. It is really nice inside. The food however we had today was exceptional. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and fell off the bone. The flavour of the jus was so good. The chips are mental, so big but stunning. The chicken tagliatelle was oustanding too. Definitely recommend this place
Ron N — Google review
Wow, the food, ambiance and drinks were delicious. The cheese souffle starter was exquisite. I couldn't get enough of it. For mains, I had the pork, which was delicious and the other had steaks and all enjoyed them. The wines were excellent, as was the after dinner port. The desserts were also a hit with us all. Excellent atmosphere and our server was excellent and friendly. Highly recommend.

We enjoyed a wonderful birthday evening meal at Porto yesterday. Thank you to all the staff. We are staying at a five star hotel with a Michelin star restaurant in Windermere and we both preferred the food at Porto. Not just the food, there was a vibrant atmosphere and every table was occupied. Staff are attentive and professional. Well done.

Pub
Bar
English restaurant
The Flying Pig Pub in Bowness offers a cozy and traditional Lake District experience just a short distance from Lake Windermere. The pub provides a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu featuring freshly made dishes like fish & chips, Sunday roasts, pies of the day, and plant-based burgers. The pub's countryside decor adds to its charm. Situated near popular walking routes, the dog-friendly pub is an ideal spot for ramblers with their furry friends.
Seasonal early meal offers yesterday it was 4pm until 6.30pm 2 course for £16.95 not sure of the cost but you can also have 3 courses.. Good value for money. We got there after 4.30pm by the time we finished our meal the place was full. Recommend going early rather than later. We had pie of the day shown on specials board as chicken, ham & leek.. Was packed full of delicious chunky meat n leek.. Would recommend! Also the chips crispy outside soft in the middle, mushy peas and a jug of gravy.. One of the nicest meals out we have had in a while.. and we are fussy. We opted for dessert I had apple n rhubarb crumble with ginger ice cream ( ice cream was a bit of a small portion) but I wasn't complaining as it was plenty and also delicious. Hubby had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. He ate the lot. We wouldnt hesitate in returning. Lovely friendly staff very attentive even when under pressure. Service charge added onto your bill.

I recently visited The Flying Pig restaurant in Windermere and tried their pork knuckle menu. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly cooked—the meat was tender and juicy, with a crisp exterior that gave it just the right texture. The portion size was generous, making it a satisfying choice for anyone with an appetite. The service matched the quality of the food. Staff were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was served promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which added to the overall positive dining experience. Overall, The Flying Pig restaurant is a place I would happily recommend, especially for anyone who enjoys classic, well-prepared pork dishes served with a smile.

Decent food portions. Not particularly special. Notable is the pork trotter which is sizeable and fairly good. Service is average, unintrusive but perfunctory. Environment is warm and kid and dog friendly.
Akinobu R — Google review
We ate here twice during our week in Bowness, and popped in for a drink every day. The pub is absolutely exceptional! Food is great, service is excellent and the atmosphere is so friendly. We took our dog with us everytime and we were made to feel so welcome. They have a special dog menu and station for biscuits, water and bowls which is some of the best facilities we’ve ever seen. We can’t wait to come back on our next break!

Fantastic food after a day walking in the hills. Good beer, but the stand out really is the food - tasty and good portion sizes. They're also really good at catering for gluten free
Arthur E — Google review
This pubs website states that the british food is usually described as bland and not good to compared to other countries (which they then said they changed that). however they made perfectly true in the food we were served! took about 5 mins to speak to someone about getting a table and the staff themselves were nice however the food was terrible. we had a roast dinner each (trio meats) and cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets, food took about 20mins to come out which wasn’t terrible timing i suppose, however i would’ve waited longer if that meant i got something hot! the gravy was like water and had no taste and cold, the meats themselves were bland and cold. potatoes were fluffy however not crispy and had no flavour except soil, unsure if you see the theme but they were cold. the veg was good, once again cold. cauli cheese was hot!! and flavourless… yorkshire tasted store bought and not fresh (cold!!!). pigs in blankets were good but not sure how you could mess that up, they were warm! took about 30mins to get a servers attention, i’m not one to complain but it was a disgrace. so i complained lightly to the server ( who was new and was not trained enough to be serving alone, i’ve worked in pubs i know how this should work.) and he was somewhat apologetic, then the manager came over shortly and he was nice about everything and gave us a 10% discount (i did not ask for any discount this was at his own doing) and offered us free deserts for when we next come, which we won’t be.. atmosphere was nice however nice fire and building, cleanliness was good. however does not make up for the disgrace of a roast and service! we left not happy and still hungry. should’ve got ice cream for desert and the running theme was cold through our visit.
Jack S — Google review
I’ve eaten here a fair few times now. The food here is always nice with good portion sizes. This time I had the new pork knuckle which was huge. Had this dish in Prague recently and this was just as tasty. Traditional pub with nice selection of real ales. Recommended.
Jonathan L — Google review
Absolutely shocking. Ordered the half chicken and the skin on the chicken was burnt. The meat beneath it was dry and over cooked. Didn’t even offer a discount or for it to be taken off the bill. I tried to eat it all but just wasn’t edible! I don’t complain much at ever. Their response was they had a new cook helping the chef. Well that’s not my problem! You can’t serve food like this!!! If they had offered a discount or taken it off the bill I would not be writing this review. They didn’t even try rectifying the situation.

Bar & grill
Nestled by the serene waters of Bowness-on-Windermere, Boardwalk Bar and Grill is a delightful lakeside spot that invites you to unwind while savoring mouthwatering dishes. With a charming terrace that boasts breathtaking views of the lake, it’s an ideal venue for everything from romantic dinners to casual lunches with friends or family. The menu features an array of favorites including juicy steaks, hearty burgers, and classic hot dogs, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Fabulous place to eat and just be at. It has amazing views of the lake and backs it up with top notch food and service. Firstly we hadn't booked and the front of house was very accommodating and squeezed us in when he could've turned us away. My youngest then split most of her drink which they cleaned and replaced with no issue which made us feel much better about the situation. So much choice on the menu and the staff were helpful in recommending what to have. I went with the dirty burger and upgraded the fires to loaded waffle fries and washed down with a lovely pint of wainwright gold. All excellent. My wife had the fish and chips and the haddock was awesome. Fresh white meat and perfect batter. Kids ate everything and shared the dessert burger for pudding which is a must try. Me and wife shared a biscoff cheesecake which was also excellent. No surprise this place is top on trip advisor. Will definitely be returning next time we're at the lakes and I'll be sure to book!
Chris C — Google review
We recently returned to this lovely spot after first visiting four years ago, and we’re happy to say the food is still just as great—delicious and beautifully presented, bringing back fond memories of our previous visit. The terrace is a real highlight, offering stunning views out over the lake and the yacht dock—perfect for a relaxing lunch or dinner with a view. Service was warm and attentive, and they were especially accommodating of our dog, which we really appreciated. The only small gripe would be the noticeable price increase compared to our last visit. That said, with everything that’s happened in recent years—COVID, inflation, and rising costs—it’s understandable, and probably to be expected. All in all, a lovely experience in a beautiful setting. We’ll definitely be back again.

Great service, great food, great atmosphere, provided treats and water for my dog and even sold dog meals! Steak was cooked to correct temp, the steak sandwich was delicious, and the ribs fell off the bone. Staff very friendly and reasonable prices, would definitely recommend this place
Paul B — Google review
The menu is well done, popular dishes we tried were the pulled pork, cock a doodle pink burger, chocolate smoothies, larger. The portion size is satisfactory. The fish and chips were very well done. The restaurant has a nice view overlooking the lake, the ambience is nice and the service is timely, courteous and great. FYI: it’s one the places BeardMeetsFood did the burger challenge, it’s well worth a try. P.S couldn’t add the picture of the chocolate smoothie since I inhaled it in 10 seconds.

Where to begin!! Upon booking there was a section for "special notes/comments", I had wrote that on the day I was proposing to my now fiancé and that if possible we could have a table with a view, they didn't disappoint! Upon arrive all staff were congratulatory to our engagement, Upon seating we received a complementary glass of prosecco and a card of congratulations. Soon after ordering our starters (calamari and halloumi which was delicious 😋) it was with us so quick we was shocked in a very good way, for mains we had 2x 12oz rib eye steaks, after 15yrs of catering experience we have never tasted such a well cooked steaks! Chef's my hat off too you thank you. This was a truely amazing venue for our special occasion! To everyone at Boardwalk Bar & Grill thank so much from the bottom of our hearts for such an amazing meal, service, attention to detail and just thank you, your establishment forever has a special in our hearts and stomachs 😂 thank you again!
Chris ( — Google review
A very beautiful location with a great plus! What made me choose this place was that it’s right by the lake and also because of their Early Bird special: two courses for £22, three courses for £26, which I think is excellent and very convenient. The only downside was that I came with my dog (2.5 kg) and was told we could only sit downstairs, not upstairs. The upstairs tables are much nicer, which was why I originally wanted to sit there. Perhaps they could consider making the upstairs area dog-friendly. Also, it would be great if they could add more options to the starters or main courses. If you visit more than once, the choices can feel a bit limited; for example, Piri Piri isn’t for everyone and besides fish and chips or a burger, there aren’t many other options. Adding more variety would give customers more to choose from. The service was exceptional and the food was very good. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back!
Claudia B — Google review
Really pleased with our visit. Even on a rainy night it was a great environment. All the staff were both professional and friendly and the food was everything I hoped for. The bavette sandwich was well cooked and flavourful, and the desert burger was both whimsical and very moreish. My wife had the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection! It's a shame we are only up here on holiday, as it is a place I would definitely like to return to.
Rhod E — Google review
A nice space to get out of the rain and have a few drinks and some steak. Great view across the lake and very good selection of food and cocktails. Staff were present and knew the menu well and we would definitely visit here again.

Urban Food House in Bowness-on-Windermere is a modern bistro offering a relaxed dining experience with an international menu. The restaurant features a light-filled space and serves brunch, lunch, and dinner, making it suitable for various occasions. While not exclusively vegan or vegetarian, the restaurant has gained popularity for its meat-free options, including nutritional vegan and vegetarian cooked breakfasts and the popular vegan bean burger. It's known for its modern approach to hospitality and is dog-friendly.
I visited twice. The first was to sit down somewhere to read my book and this place was very welcoming! The second time I went back with my partner for breakfast. We ordered the Urban Hash and the Avocado toast. It was overall very good but I absolutely loved the Urban Hash! So flavourful and hits every spot! It was a very satisfying breakfast for me.
Amelia Z — Google review
Great spot for brunch🥓🍳 Everything we ordered was delicious, except for the Shakshuka (too heavy on cumin seasoning) & Egg Royale (slightly too salty for our liking) Our orders included: 1. Urban Breakfast ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2. Urban Hash ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3. Shakshuka ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4. Egg Royale ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5. Bacon & Blueberry Pancakes (shareable) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Karen C — Google review
I have walked past this venue hundreds of times, and it usually looks very nice. My partner and I decided to give it a whirl as we couldn’t be bothered cooking breakfast at home and I’ve got to say I was very disappointed. The female who served us, wearing a pink jumper, lacked basic customer service skills and appeared to not be interested in us. When we arrived she just pointed at a table with no welcoming greeting. She didn’t smile and appeared to be very rude. The eggs Benedict was of poor quality and very expensive for what it was, a very small slice of toast in the middle of a big plate. The salt shaker broke whilst trying to use it. I ordered a cappuccino and was just served a wet milky mess of a drink. I will not be returning.
Aaron P — Google review
Don’t be fooled by the first glance at the picture with this review! Look closely and you’ll see that my “smashed avocado on toast” is actually a prettily dressed slice of white bread that hasn’t been toasted and guacamole from a bottle! My sister’s pancakes were similarly prepared in a factory who knows how long ago! The servers attitude about it was far from apologetic and while he did remove the item from the bill he made a big deal about 15p that was left after we split the bill!
Kim P — Google review
One of the best Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon I've had in quite a while. The Avocado on toast was also delicious and the coffee was very smooth. Highly recommend. Still as good, 3 years later.
Paul J — Google review
Tried other places and thought this place looked nice and cozy. Ordered a large and a small breakfast with tea and a flat white coffee. The coffee was a cappuccino not a flat white. When the breakfasts arrived they looked nice. The eggs were placed on top of the toast which made it greasy and I wasn’t able to eat it. The eggs had pepper on them which is a personal choice to have on or not. The bacon was hard dry and broke rather than cut and was salty. The sausage was very peppery. Got more juice than beans. The salt grinder was throwing salt out of the top as much as the bottom. The small breakfast had black pudding and a hash brown on which wasn’t on the menu. Hash brown was ok but wouldn’t have had the black pudding. All in all not the greatest of experiences and at the price paid made it worse. I don’t mind paying a higher cost if the overall quality is worth it. We won’t be returning.
Karl F — Google review
We arrived on a rainy evening and so grateful to be able to find this place for dinner without booking. Throughly enjoyed all the starters that we ordered. Great flavours, fresh and tasty. We had their Urban Fried Chicken Burger for main which was a bit dry and the seasoning was not as great as their starters. Staffs were all very friendly and attentive. Overall, it’s a nice dining experience!
Angie “ — Google review
We decided to try Urban Food house based on previous Google reviews and the on the vegetarian options available and we weren't disappointed. I had the vegetation hash halloumi cheese and peppers. It was well presented and good portion and delicious. The service was quick and friendly. It was very quiet for a midweek visit but maybe reflected the school term had started? But overall I'd highly recommend.

Italian restaurant
Restaurant
Villa Positano is a well-loved Italian restaurant in Bowness, a popular holiday town in the Lake District National Park. This family-run establishment offers a traditional and friendly atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The menu features authentic Italian cuisine, including freshly made pasta and pizza, as well as risotto with wild mushroom. Visitors can expect delicious dishes such as baked goat cheese salad and exceptional fish of the day.
Came here after reading reviews and I was not disappointed! I had booked ahead and was when I arrived I was warmly greated and seated immediately. Food was incredibly tasty and eaten entirely! I had the goats cheese salad, pollo marengo and the chef recommended desert. Vanilla sponge, cherry compte and vanilla ice cream. The house rosé helped it all go down!

Emily B — Google review
A Hidden Gem in the Lake District , A Must Visit Italian Delight Tucked away on a charming one way street, this Italian restaurant might be a little tricky to find, especially with car access restricted unless you’re a disabled badge holder but trust me, it’s worth the effort. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is absolutely captivating: warm, welcoming, and authentically Italian. It’s a spot that feels both special and relaxed, the kind of place where conversations linger over empty plates and glasses of wine. The staff are fantastically attentive, cheerful, and clearly passionate about what they do. It’s refreshing to see young talent thriving in the hospitality industry, and their energy adds to the overall experience. A word to the wise: skip the beers and lagers. This place shines when it comes to its wine selection, which perfectly complements the food and enhances the overall dining experience. If you’re visiting the Lake District, make this restaurant a priority. Excellent food, a beautiful atmosphere, and standout service make it a true highlight of the region.

Good food, great service and vibe. My family and I really enjoyed our dinner there. They have a good and different selection of desserts and wine. It was warm, cozy and homely.
Veronica C — Google review
Had a great dinner here. Typical classic Italian restaurant with all the usual dishes and some interesting specials. Chicken liver starter was excellent, as were all three pasta dishes we chose. Wine list is extensive if a little expensive. Good range of beers. Part of the place is up a set of stairs on the first floor. Something to be aware of if you find stairs an issue. Would recommend reserving a table as it was very busy when we were there. Despite this service was quick and friendly. for what we had it was also good value.
Garry ( — Google review
I usually don't write reviews but after our experience at villa positano i had to. While the food was good the whole experience was dimmed by the rude staff, starting from the host or the owner (who at one point during our meal we saw rudely speaking to guests coming without knowing that they need to order a place) to the rest of the staff acting like they want us to get out. It left a very bitter taste and made us pretty upset for the rest of the evening which is why I'm writing this
Tal S — Google review
"Well, that was quite the experience. Walked in tonight around 6pm hoping to grab a table and asked to see a menu. The place was practically empty - just one couple dining - but apparently that didn't matter. The staff member who greeted us had all the warmth of a glacier. Instead of showing us a menu, we got the third degree about whether we had a reservation. When we said no, we were curtly informed they were 'fully booked' - which was particularly amusing given the sea of empty tables staring back at us. The whole interaction was bizarre and unwelcoming. No apology, no suggestion of when we might come back, just a flat-out dismissal that left us scratching our heads. The attitude was unnecessarily rude and frankly unprofessional. Safe to say we won't be making a return visit. Thankfully, there are three other Italian restaurants in town that actually seem to want customers. Would definitely recommend checking out one of those instead - at least they'll probably let you see a menu without treating you like you're asking for state secrets. Sometimes poor service speaks louder than any food review ever could." worst experience and interaction in some time ,
Ulysses O — Google review
Staying in Windermere and walked past this restaurant and thought the menu looked good. Called same day and luckily managed to get a table for that evening, though it seems we really timed it right as it was fully booked. We walked down an alley to find a very charming, authentic restaurant where we were greeted and seated by a friendly and welcoming gentleman. The food was second to none, fresh and authentic and extremely tasty. Very efficient service, couldn’t fault any of it. £80 for three courses, two alcoholic drinks and one non-alcoholic drink. Really great prices. Will absolutely be back if we ever find ourselves in the area.

We've visited this beautiful restaurant and bar since we first got together in 2006, every time we visit Bo'ness we make a beeline for Bodega Bar. The food is as scrumptious as it was on our first visit. We visited here the night before we found out we were going to be parents- even taught the barman how to make B52 shots lol We recently visited here for our 18th Anniversary, taking it back to where we started. A wonderful place for drinks, Tapas, relaxing, or even a warm through in those colder Autumn days when they have the roaring fire going to accompany a nice cup of tea or whatever you choose. Absolutely wonderful place!

Very pleasant atmosphere in the bar with Spanish background music creating a really relaxing holiday feeling. The drinks selection was good, although a keg ale that is not Beavertown might appreciated by some. Staff, for the most part were smiley and friendly although one guy came across as a tad full of himself. Lovely place for people watching in the centre of Bowness.

Pub
Hole in t' Wall is a charming and historic pub located in Bowness, proudly claiming the title of the oldest pub in the area with origins dating back to 1612. The interior exudes an old-world charm with its stone-flagged floors, oak panelling, low beams, and an eclectic array of bric-a-brac adorning every nook. The bar offers a selection of Robinsons ales, gins, and rums.
Quite, away from the main road place. Lovely beer garden. Delicious food. Portions are generous. The prices are lower compared to other places in the area, but the quality is definitely not worse (and probably better). Lovely and very helpful stuff. We weren’t sure what to drink, so they let us try a couple of different beers and ciders to help us decide. Definitely would come again.

If your hungry try the ploughman's, or it can be shared, and the fish pie looked very tasty. The pudding was sticky toffee pud and custard was nice and light and hot. All washed down with a couple of pints. A very enjoyable evening. 🤗 Thanks

A cosy and historic pub with loads of character! It was built in 1612. The oldest pub in the Lake District. The Hole in t’Wall is full of charm, with its low beams, open fire, and friendly atmosphere. The food is hearty and delicious, and the drinks selection is excellent. Staff are welcoming and attentive, making you feel right at home. A perfect place to relax after exploring Windermere – it truly feels like a hidden gem.

Staff were gorgeous with my toddler, we had the best fish pie I’ve ever had and Lamb Henry too. Would go here every day of holiday if we could, we’re considering it!

Always visit when we are in Bowness. Quirky old style pub. Can vouch for the steak and ale pie. Great juke box in back room.. Quiet in front room.. Good selection of beers. Friendly staff, great live music on Friday nights.

Visiting the Lakes this weekend , got in quite late so went here for a quick pint or two. Really nice place, decent beer (mostly Robinson's, I guess they own it?). Quiet on a Thursday, so ideal for a reading a book before bed.

Modern British restaurant
Fine dining restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is a charming British eatery that prides itself on using locally sourced rare breed meats and foraged goods. The restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a unique touch of personalization as guests are greeted with a letter from the chef explaining the inspiration behind each dish. Run by Cumbrian brothers, Ryan and Craig Blackburn, the restaurant's menu is heavily influenced by Cumbria's heritage, people, and landscape.
10/10, cozy atmosphere, absolutely amazing courses (including the vegetarian tasting menu too), only gripe would be that the pace at the start was good with food trickling out but by the 4th course it got quite slow and we were there got nearly 3hrs which meant my back started to hurt, didn't take away from the lovely evening though. My bf had the wine tasting menu which was a nice touch but the waiter bringing the wine out was very quiet and seemed almost nervous explaining each wine and we didn't really learn anything from it.
Issy B — Google review
Food, wine pairing, staff friendliness and ambiance of the venue is first class. The chef bringing out the main dish and having a chat with every guest was a nice touch. The restaurant is decorated in dark colours and striking art work. Every single dish was an explosion of flavours that worked perfectly. The only disappointment was my boyfriend made a note on our reservation that it was my 40th birthday (actually the day itself) and offered to pay more money to do some sort of treat over dinner to acknowledge this and nothing was done. And the table next to us got a “happy birthday” from their waitress with a dessert that said “happy birthday” and from a sounds of it another complimentary dessert dish so that was sad for us both to witness when he hoped for something similar especially being such a milestone birthday.

Without doubt the best meal I have ever had! I could not fault a single thing. Each course was delicious. The staff were great. Terrific wine list. Wonderful atmosphere. Yes- this is a rave review!

This was our favourite meal during our stay in Ambleside. Everything was so well done here from start to finish. The explanation, the appearance, presentation, and taste were exemplary. We loved it all and will definitely be recommending to our friends. Well done to all the chefs and staff here who obviously work so hard to produce such a wonderful experience for their customers.

Had zero expectations when booking the Old Stamp House for dinner. To say I was pleasently surprised would be an understatement. A truly special experience start to finish. Impeccable service from when you walk in the door, the level of attention to detail and presentation with each dish is impressive. 11 courses on the atumn menu which are all timed well, use the best of the best produce and every element is carefully thought out and elevated. The best meal I've ever had by far. A must visit for a stay in the Lake District.
Brianna B — Google review
An amazing restaurant. Well worth booking ahead of time. Staff were friendly, and professional. Ambience was very comfortable. We went for lunch. All the courses were excellent. The chef served eveyone and had a pleasant conversation with all the clientele. There was even a letter written by Ryan to the guest, set on each table. A unique experience and would highly recommend.
The S — Google review
From start to finish excellent! Thank you team The Old Stamp House for a wonderful evening. We much appreciated the unique and personal touch on behalf of the owner Ryan that has added so much value to the dinner. What is this? Well, visit and see!
Ramona R — Google review
Great service and excellent value. We loved the opening dishes but felt the latter part of the menu was very heavy and a bit overwhelming in terms of the flavours and depths of the dishes which drops it from being a five star for us. Still, an obviously deserved award winning restaurant with plenty of character, honesty, flair and talent leading the kitchen delivering a down to earth experience. We thoroughly appreciated the accompanying notes for each dish. We would return and try again.

A really lovely dining experience for me and my partner. We choose the sharing platter, had drinks and deserts and loved it. Outside was great, people watching in the teatime sunshine o whilst the hustle and bustle were out looking for their evening food and entertainment.

Highly recommend to everyone! We were visiting Bowness-On-Windermere for 3 days. We had dinner here on the first night and went back for breakfast on the last day. Both meals were incredible. Great value for money and high quality food. You can tell everything has been cooked from fresh! Scrambled eggs to die for too!! Super friendly staff, quick and dog friendly!

Loved the vibe at Magic Roundabout—quirky decor, warm staff, and surprisingly good vine n dine. The beef stroganoff was spot on, and the magic nacho starter disappeared fast (guilty!). Great spot to unwind after a day by the lake.

Highly recommend it here!! Absolutely lovely staff who were extremely helpful, friendly and kind. You can get discount for returning multiple times and it’s hard not to once you’ve been once. Great portion sizes and options and a great selection of teas and food overall. Outside seating catches you some lovely sun in summer. The sourdough served with the breakfasts is immaculate

So good, we went two days on the trot! First for lunch where our group had soup and a sandwich. Then the following day for a late afternoon/early evening meal. Service was exceptional, even if none of the staff knew why the cutlery was all crossed lol. Food was amazing, with portions that required crampons and a miners lamp to work through. Outstanding!

ChoccoBar Hot Chocolate House is a delightful haven located in the picturesque Windermere, perfect for those looking to indulge their sweet tooth. This modern café specializes in gourmet hot chocolates and an impressive selection of gluten-free waffles, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a delicious treat without worry. With dedicated waffle-makers and a variety of toppings available, ChoccoBar caters to all tastes while maintaining a cozy atmosphere ideal for unwinding after exploring the stunning lakes.
Freshly made waffles, you can tell too. Nice pot of tea for one, good brew but tiny cups for my big mit's. Will return for the cakes on display.

ChoccoBar is a sophisticated sanctuary in the ever popular Bowness-On-Windermere with an array of delicious treats on offer. We opted for the fondue which had all sorts of luscious fruits, waffles, churros and marshmallows to dip in the signature highest quality chocolate. The vanilla milkshake was extravagant but worth it in every way. Rhona and George were so lovely and helped us relax while offering world class service. Whenever life finds us in this beautiful part of the world again, we’ll definitely be back. We couldn’t recommend ChoccoBar more.
Mark T — Google review
We booked in advance for afternoon tea as part of our honeymoon at the ChoccoBar after trying their luxury hot chocolates which were delightful. It was beautifully presented on a three tier stand with all products sourced locally and hand made. The scones were fresh out the oven and were delicious. This was very reasonably priced at £50 and the service was unbelievable they went above and beyond and offered us takeaway boxes when we couldn't finish all the food. We've had afternoon teas in different parts of the UK such as Betty's tea house in Harrogate but it doesn't compare to this. This is the most lovely experience we've had ran by a family. We would definitely recommend!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Wonderful Late-Night Treat! We visited this lovely chocolate shop café late at night with our two young boys and our puppy, and it was such a warm and memorable experience. The boys had churros with rich chocolate dipping sauce — absolutely delicious! The owner, her son George, and their sweet dog Holly were so friendly and welcoming, instantly making us feel at home. It’s rare to find such genuine hospitality these days — they were amazing hosts and made our visit one of the highlights of our holiday in Bowness. The hot chocolate was outstanding (a real sample of perfection!), and the boys couldn’t have been happier tucking into their churros. A true gem in the Lake District — we’ll definitely be back!
Sarah W — Google review
I had the Belgian waffle with strawberries, chocolate and ice cream, it was absolutely delicious! I’m a celiac, so I was pleased to know the waffles are gluten free. The hot chocolate was probably the best I’ve tasted, seriously! Owner was lovely and welcoming! I’ll be a regular customer from now on.
Daniel T — Google review
Used to be absolutely fantastic, huge portions, REAL cream. In the last few years, the portion sizes have decreased massively, despite price increases. The waffles are barely bigger than a small plate. The toppings used to be a mountain on top of the waffles and that's what we were paying for which was well worth it. No longer serve freshly whipped cream which is disappointing. This place used to stand out due to the great toppings and the fresh cream with the scones and hot chocolates. Now very poor quality, nothing special at all. Such a let down when it used to be incredible, I would've recommended to anyone from 2022-2023.. now I would say to avoid. I would absolutely come back if the toppings improved and you still offered fresh cream, sorry guys, I was sad to make this review:(

We’ve just returned from our trip to Bowness-on-Windermere, and I can’t stop thinking about the heavenly hot chocolate from ChoccoBar! Honestly, it’s the best I’ve ever had, rich, silky, and absolutely indulgent. Each sip felt like pure luxury in a cup! The café itself is wonderful too, warm, cozy, and run by the loveliest, most welcoming owner who made us feel right at home. We were so obsessed with the hot chocolate that we couldn’t leave without buying two pouches to take home (and they smell divine!). If you’re in Windermere, do yourself a favour and stop by ChoccoBar, missing it would be a serious mistake for any chocolate lover! 🍫

Thai restaurant
Restaurant
House of Siam is a casual and intimate restaurant located in Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere. Despite being in a touristy area, this place stands out for its excellent authentic Thai cuisine and charismatic service. The restaurant is popular among locals and tourists alike, with a bustling atmosphere filled with people from various backgrounds enjoying the delicious food. The interior has an exotic vibe, and both the kitchen and staff are Thai, providing attentive and friendly service.
Food & presentation is wonderful, service from the staff is attentive and you are made to feel very welcome. Menu shows photographs of each dish and what arrives really does look like the photos. Larb Gai (minced chicken salad) here is very spicy and authentic, not dumbed down as is the case with many UK Thai restaurants. Tempura Vegetables were crispy and hot. Dishes are bright & colourful with fresh vegetable garnishes; we had a Chicken Green Curry, mild and creamy with Jasmine rice plus a Ginger & Spring Onion Prawn stir fry, fresh & zingy with coconut rice. Great flavour combinations. Tables are tightly squeezed in, but it’s a busy place and the food is good. Definitely more authentic flavours of the Thai restaurants in this area.
Bev E — Google review
Was staying at a nearby hotel, we just walked down the road to see what we fancied. There were a few Thai restaurants in the area. The King of Siam took to our taste as it was colourful in decor. Staff very friendly and our dog was allowed. The Restaurant was empty when we arrived (early evening) but soon filled up with patrons.

As someone who has tried a lot Thai Restaurants in UK and also in Thailand, I think the food here is absolutely amazing. The seafood is so fresh and the flavour is more than just tasty. The price is also a plus point, it is in a tourism area but it is not pricey at all, while having the great seating and the best services. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Lake District to try them out.

Great food at great prices. The watermelon juice is really tasty and our favourite. The menu has lot of options for vegetarians. It was tasty and portions were more than enough. Definitely recommend!

Hands down one of the best Thai meals we've ever had! Great décor and easy to forget you're in the Lake District for a while. Lots of options on the menu and the food came out quite quickly and it was amazing. The kids have never had Thai before and they really enjoyed it - they just had starters and those were plenty big enough for a 5 and 9 year old. The staff were very friendly - one went out of her way to try and get strawberries for my son's dessert after he said he really liked them. She later told me they'd run out so she'd been to the shop and they didn't have any either. I said not to worry about it and was asked if he liked raspberries. I said he loved them - thinking the restaurant had some - but she then went back out to the shop to get raspberries so he'd have some on his dessert. Such a nice touch and definitely above and beyond - he loved it! Will be visiting again next time we're in the area!

Visited this restaurant and the experience was pretty neat. The place had a lovely ambiance, making the dining experience more enjoyable. However, the food was a bit pricey, which was likely due to its location. Overall, the restaurant provided a decent experience, but the cost was a slight downside.
Bhaskar K — Google review
Visited King of Siam with my family and tried a variety of dishes — Spicy King Prawns, Salted Squid, Prawns Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, and Papaya Salad. The seafood was fresh, and the prawns were cooked perfectly with a nice balance of spice. The salted squid was crisp on the outside and tender inside. Fried rice portions were generous and flavorful, and the papaya salad added a refreshing, tangy kick to the meal. Service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Overall, a satisfying dining experience for Thai food lovers.

We visited as part of a big group and did cocktail making, dinner and then karaoke. A great venue for groups - 3 different floors with lots to offer. Food portions were huge but the food tasted great! Karaoke was in a room on the third floor - you were able to order drinks via a buzzer and they arrived quick. A great venue to come to as a group!

We really enjoyed our meal, we had the steak board, it is a random fusion of dishes but all were really nice quality. All dishes were seasoned really well and the steak was cooked to perfection. There was so much food we couldn't finish it all.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, the venue is nicely styled and staff are friendly and enthusiastic about the menu. We started with the crispy lamb bites and crispy pork belly bites, followed by the dirty lee burger and a red thai duck curru that was probably one of the best thai curries I've had with amazing layers or flavour. But the star of the show was the damson blossom cheesecake which was a treat for both the tastebuds and the eyes. Next time we're back in the lake district Baha will definitely be on the list for a repeat visit

Booked here as staying locally. We had 1 starter two main and a bottle of wine. Even though the food was very nice we did think a tad expensive. We never had anyone check to see if our food was nice or to see if we needed anything else. The restaurant was not busy. At £28 for a bottle of house wine it would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted it opening/ pouring but just got it left on our table. Tbh the staff didn’t seem jolly or interested. The walls were marked and could have done with a bit of fresh decoration. But couldn’t fault the food we had. Asked for the bill but after waiting a while we put our coats on and had to go to the bar as our bill never turned up. Our bill had a service charge added so check this as you don’t have to pay it! Overall enjoyed our food but won’t be returning.

Sit back, Relax with great views and atmosphere to match! We have been visiting Bowness for years and have somehow missed out on the Boater Bar until now. What a mistake! This bar and restaurant is a true gem with its stunning views of the lake and various seating options, including a large outdoor sun terrace. The Bar offers a great selection of wines, spirits, and craft beers at very reasonable prices. nd for sports enthusiasts, the bar does not disappoint; numerous large screen TVs are strategically placed so you can catch the action from almost any seat. We was lucky enough to visit on a Tuesday and made the best of the Pizza offer they had on, we would have loved to try a coffee and cake after but our stomachs were so full! But defiantly on our visit. We visited on a Tuesday, which happened to be their pizza offer day, and I must say, the pizza did not disappoint! It was delicious and definitely hit the spot. While we were tempted to indulge in coffee and cake afterward, we were too full to manage another bite – but it’s definitely on our list for our next visit! If your visiting the area area the Bar is easily accessible with multiple parking options nearby. The staff are super friendly, enthusiastic, and contribute to the bar's great atmosphere. We can't wait to return on our next visit to Bowness. thanks Rebecca.

Lakefront Perfection at The Boaters Bar The Boaters Bar is an absolute gem tucked right on the edge of Lake Windermere—easily one of the best dining views in the Lake District. We enjoyed the most incredible homemade pizzas, perfectly crisp and full of flavour, all while overlooking the glittering water and a marina full of sleek, high-end boats. It doesn’t get more picturesque than this. The atmosphere strikes a lovely balance between laid-back and luxe, and their house-made gins are a must-try—refreshing, smooth, and the perfect lakeside indulgence. Whether you're popping in for a casual bite or sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the lake, Boaters Bar delivers on all fronts. Great food, stellar drinks, and unbeatable views. Don’t miss it!

Kysty is a relaxed dining spot that offers multi-course meals with wine pairings for both lunch and dinner. The name, meaning "fussy" in Cumbrian dialect, reflects the insistence on local ingredients rather than the restaurant's mood. It is the more casual counterpart to the Michelin-starred Old Stamp House. Despite still offering set menus, macaron-style amuse bouches, and wine pairings, Kysty provides a shorter and more straightforward dining experience.
The day we had our lunch reservation, it rained heavily in the Lake District. Considering the cancellation fee, we struggled through the rain from Bowness to Amberside, but unexpectedly, it turned out to be a delightful meal. It was even one of the top 3 dining experiences of our whole UK trip. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the Lake District. The restaurant's service was very friendly and professional. Based on recommendations, we ordered various appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Each dish was very satisfying. The Pigeon Breast was cooked like steak, juicy and sweet. The fish, Mackerel, was not fishy at all but with a good flavor. The dessert was a mousse with gingerbread, which I found to be very distinctive and delicious.

We received some complimentary nibbles before our starters arrived, which was such a lovely surprise and each thing that was served to us was a delicious mouthful of flavour heaven. We were also served a little bit of bread (I think they said that it was made with beer) which was very dense, but delicious and very filling. I really want the recipe to this bread so I can make it at home! Every time a dish came out, the waiter would kindly explain each element to us. The food is beautifully presented and each element of the dish really compliments the other. Even though the portions may be classed as small by some, they are incredibly filling and you definitely leave the restaurant feeling full and satisfied. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area and if I am ever back, will definitely visit again. For the quality of food you receive, this place is very reasonably priced as well.

Henrock, located in the Linthwaite House Hotel overlooking Lake Windermere, offers a unique dining experience with a blend of locally sourced produce from the Rogan farm and foraged ingredients. The menu showcases Asian influences and features visually stunning dishes served on slates and handmade ceramics. As the more relaxed counterpart to L'Enclume in Cartmel, Henrock provides an excellent option for those seeking Simon Rogan's culinary excellence in a more informal setting.
A delicious tasting menu, presented beautifully, accompanied by some good wines. We were a little nervous about returning to the restaurant after a disappointing afternoon tea with our parents when the place first opened, some years ago. However, we are now so pleased we returned. The tasting menu on New Year's Eve was excellent and admittedly beyond our expectations. Each course was well-executed, beautifully presented and served delightfully by attentive staff. We particularly enjoyed the Ox Cheek but all the courses were consistently good. The wine flight, although not as prestigious as at the chef's other restaurants, was nonetheless well selected, with some lovley examples of quality wine. We will be back to enjoy Simon Rogan's Henrock again in the future.

Loved it all. The food, the service, the vibes of the beautiful grounds that overlook the lake. We were well attended to by Matthew and his team who clearly explained each Tasting Menu dish as it arrived. He was even so kind as to announce that the sun was setting and that best we went to the terraces for some photos to capture the moment. You could taste the Asian influences in the dishes for sure - sharp at points, tangy on others - and it puts a different spin on most other Western Tasting menus. The standout to me though has to be The Coal Fashioned, one of their new cocktails. Delicious. It goes well with the meal as the smoky palette complemented the dishes. Didn’t expect this, it was a nice surprise.

After doing some research and reading up on blogs, I booked Henrock for my husband and I to celebrate an anniversary and birthday. We were warmly greeted into the restaurant and sat at the table with a stunning view of the beautiful gardens. The lunch menu included starters, mains, dessert and a sweet. The starters were innovative and full of flavour. For mains we opted for the cod and lamb shoulder which were both delicious especially the cod which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant also arranged a surprise for the special occasion which was a lovely gesture. I highly recommend Henrock and the lunch menu covers a wide variety of dishes and is great value. The service was excellent we were looked after well by Matthew the waiter who was welcoming, funny and attentive. Each dish was explained well when brought out. You can also take a relaxing walk around the gardens and pond after lunch. I have already recommended the restaurant to friends and family. Henrock truly exceeded expectations 10/10 would definitely come back again.

My partner brought me here for Sunday lunch for my birthday - after a relaxing and lovely time having a coffee and then a drink in the lounge, we were warmly greeted and given our favourite table (we have been twice before). I was given a glass of fizz to celebrate, with our amuse-bouche, and then the delicious main course followed - perfect pink beef and roast potatoes and cabbage (beautifully prepared) - even though we were pretty full, we managed the lovely dessert! Such a lovely way to celebrate!

What a fantastic meal. Each dish was like a work of art, well thought out and tasted amazing. Our host was so friendly and attentive and took some lovely photos of us (we were celebrating our engagement). They also gave us an additional dessert for our engagement which was really kind. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated and the music is not loud so you can actually hear each other talking. The tables are nicely spaced so it does feel private and intimate. We opted for the tasting menu which was £95pp plus a bottle of the Portuguese Dao. The sourdough bread with miso butter was incredible but dangerous 🤣

From the moment we stepped into Henrock, we knew we were in for something extraordinary. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between modern sophistication and the natural warmth of the Lake District surroundings. Every detail, from the service to the plating, reflected the care and precision you expect from a Michelin-starred experience. Each course was a masterclass in flavor and presentation. The ingredients were clearly seasonal and sourced with care, but it was the creativity in the pairings and techniques that truly stood out. Every bite felt deliberate and balanced, yet never pretentious. The wine pairings were also spot-on, enhancing the dishes without overshadowing them. Service was professional yet warm, with the team striking that rare balance of attentiveness without intrusion. The pacing of the meal was flawless, allowing us to enjoy each course without ever feeling rushed. Henrock isn’t just a meal. It’s an experience. Whether you’re a seasoned fine-diner or someone exploring their first Michelin-starred spot, this is a destination worth traveling for. We’ll absolutely be back.

Edit, we retutned today for lunch. And it was so much better. We had cod, lamb, hen of the woods, with a variety of sides. It was all really good. Not sure why we had a poor experience on ourlast visit. The location is lovely, the atmosphere in the restaurant is pleasant, comfortable furniture, interesting wall art. The staff were very accomodating and polite. Sadly the food was a big let down. We had the Sunday roast. The ptotatoes were hard and dry. The meat was warm and quite tough. The broad beans had no flavor. The carrots were okay. The bread was good and the deserts quite flavourful. Sadly we will not return anytime soon. I think when chef's expand their empire, especially at the top end, it's very hard to replicate the food experience . Simon is dependant on his chef's to reproduce his recipes, sadly this is not the case here.

The Lakes are one of my favourite places to get away from the day to day and on the last occasion we got to visit Henrock. Having heard great things we were not disappointed. As soon as we arrived the staff were fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the menu and pairing wine. We had dietary requests and again they were fantastic catering to our requirements. The restaurant was spacious and as it filled had a great atmosphere. The chefs culinary skills are exquisite. We didn’t want the meal to end every mouthful enjoying the flavours and textures. The food, its local source is part of the story of Henrock. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Lake District. We will be back.

Would like to thanks Paul . Very humble and courteous. Suggested good quick hikes for walk-around . Room exceeded our expectations . Cosy , quiet ,beautiful view and with good facilities inside the room. Parking was provided in the hotel. Though a bit tight but had enough spots to park in. Breakfast was included with the room. Had to walk to Angel Inn for restaurant just in front of hotel. Subtle ambience with cosy environment. You can order from breakfast menu for hot foods. We ordered English breakfast. It was delicious. Service was fast and staff were humble . They served hot milk as well on request. Would 100% recommend . Based on its location , service and value.

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! The hotel was easy to find, had its own parking and was located in the middle of down with everything on your doorstep. We were greeted by a lovely man who explained all the COVID safety measures and made us feel welcome from the start. The rooms were modern and clean and had a beautiful view of the lake. The following morning we had breakfast (which was included) which was really nice and the staff there were also amazing. Over all I could truly not recommend the hotel enough as I could not find any fault with our stay!

A warm and inviting B&B, we had a lovely weekend stay and the hosts were great. They helped with anything we needed, the room was lovely and the view was great. The breakfast was very generous and amazing quality, we will definitely be back and recommend to any looking to stay near the lake.

Arrived early morning(9:30am)so we could make the most of our time there. Asked if we was ok to leave car there until check in time. Was greeted by a lovely lady who said we was welcome to check in then as our room was ready. We had a standard double room (room8) and it was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was excellent, had lots to chose from and the staff serving the breakfast was polite and nothing too much trouble at all. The hotel is in a great location, close to shops and lake. Had a lovely overnight stay there and would recommend highly. If we are ever visiting the area again we will be sure to stay here.

Had a lovely weekend at oakbank . We stayed in room 14 and loved the fact that it was outside of the main house. The only issue was the lighting. The room is quite dark with the only natural light coming from the glass paneled door. Could I suggest a brighter bulb or maybe a couple of bedside lamps. Breakfast was lovely with a great choice of items. Will definitely return.

Great, central position in Bowness....BUT....AVOID ROOM 1!!! We stayed for 3 nights....definitely NOT worth £110 a night! The en-suite was small and awkwardly laid out, we burnt our knees on the towel rail when sat on the toilet! It was also quite dirty, the dust and webs covering the whole length of the shower pull cord. The bed was small, but we knew it would be with it being a double room. The mattress was very uncomfortable so we decided to turn it over. BIG mistake as it was very stained on both sides. On the second day I made the mistake of laying on the floor to look for an item that had fallen off the bedside cabinet (cabinet was broken and everything rolled off it.) The carpet absolutely stunk, and to my horror there was the BIGGEST ball of human hair behind the chair I'd ever seen! Looks like it had been there a while....clearly the chair hadn't been pulled out to clean behind recently. The glass was broken on the window and sellotaped up, not the best look for a place of such good reputation. I gashed my arm whilst in the shower, the soap dispenser had VERY sharp edges. I informed a member of staff who immediately got the manager (Danny) but he didn't seem too interested and seemed to think it was my own fault when I showed him the problem. He gave me a plaster but never mentioned it again throughout our stay, never asking if my arm was ok. Pretty bad customer service. A totally different experience from when we stayed in 2015 where nothing was too much trouble and cleanliness seemed to be of a much higher standard. On a positive note....breakfast was delicious and GREAT views from the dining room. We won't be staying again unfortunately.

Lovely people and a proper lake view from our bedroom window. Room was clean and looked to have been recently refurbished probably during covid lockdown earlier this year. Excellent breakfast and a good night sleep on a decent bed. Good location with a number of restaurants a short walk away and only a few minutes walk away from the lake. Highly recommended for a break if you don't want a big chain hotel.

We booked in for a work meal for 35+ people. Communication before the event was easy and the team were really responsive to our requests. We had to make a couple of last minute changes to our orders which were dealt with really well, nothing was too much trouble. The service on the evening itself was brilliant too. The food was delicious and portions were ample for hungry customers who had been out walking during the day. Highly recommended for a great night for a large group.

Really disappointed. This used to be a really good place to eat and it's clearly gone downhill. My wife ordered the Vegetable lasagna only to be served red sauce in a dish with no pasta sheet to be found. When we brought this up to the (actually very lovely) waitress she went and found the "manager" Raf, who came over to us immediately on the defensive. We explained that the "Lasagna" did not resemble a lasagne and that it didn't actually have any pasta sheets in it. He told us this is what lasagne is... And talked to us like we were idiots for questioning it. Ive lived long enough on this planet to know that lasagne is meant to be a dish LAYERED with sheets (plural) of pasta traditionally 2-5 layers and then filled with vegetables cheese etc. Serving us a pot of chopped tomatos and sticking a sliver of pasta sheet on top is not a lasagne and it's not worth £20. We were so put off by his attitude we didn't bother eating our food. We left, went and got chips and sat by the water. Much more pleasant.

The food will not blow you away but it is good. The lasagna was very tomatoey. It was difficult to find a table and a vegetarian in our group was served a meat pie but the waitress was very apologetic. The atmosphere was good but a bit loud.

We’ve been here a few times for drinks but never eaten. The food was phenomenal, me & the wife loved our meals. I had the beef stew, so good it’d turn a vegan. Pint was a bit pricey but that’s the same pretty much anywhere now.

A very busy bar/pub/restaurant. Dog friendly. We tried on two occasions to get a seat for food but it was very busy so ate elsewhere but did stay for a drink. Higgley piggley but suited the place. Sofas, chairs, stools, cushions. We did see food being served which looked v nice. Would try here again next time in the area.

The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery is a family-run store with delicious baked goods that are popular for takeaways or to enjoy inside the cozy cafe. They have a wide selection of drinks, soups, sandwiches, pies and much more. They offer vegan and vegetarian options for breakfast and lunch as well as a nice covered outside area for warmer days.
We visited here as we were passing through Ambleside and we were so pleased we did! The service was incredible - such friendly, happy staff who are willing to take their time with you. The apple pie was always going to be good but wow, it was AMAZING! I wish I’d had room for a couple more! We also had a brunch butty and a cheese and potato pasty - both of which were delicious! Plenty of seating and the queue moves quickly. Toilets are so clean too - always a big plus!

We had a fabulous experience at The Apple Pie Cafe. Firstly, we bought a portion of Bath Bun & a large custard pie from the bakery. Then we went to the cafe , where the staff were friendly & engaging. The food they brought out was faultless. The pastry on the pasty just melted & the ingredients tasted moist & tender. The salads were fresh, crisp & juicy. The apple pie sundae was excellent, with fresh cream, mixed spice & sultanas. We really enjoyed our experience there.

Absolutely chucked it down so we were looking for a bit of shelter. There was a bit of a queue outside this place so we thought it must be good, we only had to wait a few minutes and were then offered a table outside under one of the heated pergolas. It was a great atmosphere despite the rain and the lunch and service were top class. We took some treats away with us and there was loads to choose from Plumbread to Rocky Road. Definitely worth a visit!

After seeing the reviews we mainly went for the bakery or we thought we were gonna go for the bakery but on arrival we found out they also got a restaurant. The menu was really good and they had a lot of options so we ended up ordering quite a few things of menu . As plenty of review suggested that we should go for the apple pie which we did and to say the least we weren’t disappointed. It was really nice chill atmosphere and the service was really good. Food was on the table on time. We didn’t have to wait that long. The orange juice was fresh and very tasty, better than your shop bought. I went for the spiced apple pie with custard and it was banging !!

Had a nice lunch and drink here! Very nice ciabatta, sausage roll and special orange hot choc! Plenty of seating. Toilet facilities are ok except they are up a thin flight of stairs which isn't very accessible

Staff brilliant. Breakfast poor and expensive considering it dosent even come with bacon. The sausage was burnt on one side and the other side was anemic as for the poached eggs. All 4 were hard and dry. This is the second time I've eaten here and this time unfortunately will be my last. On a positive note the actual shop food is fantastic.

Great bakery selling delicious cakes and pastries etc, so I had to buy a few items including a plain apple pie (they also do spiced). You can buy slices if you prefer. We then went to the cafe which is next door and had lunch. Great selection of baguettes, wraps etc. I finished it off with a generous slice of apple pie with custard (ice cream and cream options also available). Friendly staff, clean tables, prompt service. Definitely worth a visit. Large car park nearby.

Jackson's Bistro is a great restaurant with excellent staff, service and food. They serve a three course menu for only 22 pounds, which is great value. The seafood platter was amazing and the choice of having four small puddings was great. I would definitely recommend Jackson's Bistro to anyone looking for a delicious meal in the Lake District!
This place was recommended by Martin and Howard at Bowness Bay Suites. Jackson's Bistro was able to accommodate my girlfriend and I for a last minute early dinner reservation. Definitely picked the right spot for evening meal. Made to feel welcome the moment we entered, sat outside as beautiful evening. Starters leek and potato soup and cod and prawns, both very tasty and well presented. The main of duck was sublime, fell off the bone and sauce was rich and very flavoursome. Lady at the start gave a great description of menu and owner was good crack and polite. Lovely meal

We booked and arrived on time. Our table was on the upper floor. We ordered the slow cooked lamb hendry which was a smallish lamb shank with roasted vegetables. We felt that the roasted vegetables were undercooked and very hard the lamb shanks were well cooked but we felt that the whole dish could have been better. One others criticism is the 10% service charge that's added to your bill, you pay this whether you had a good, bad or indifferent experience.
Alex W — Google review
The service was excellent and cannot be faulted. All staff we interacted with were so personable and friendly. The restaurant had a lovely feel and vibes were super relaxed and welcoming, again cannot fault this! The food was cooked perfectly, but only cooked… All of the dishes lacked any seasoning or flavour, which was really disappointing as presentation was good, and like I said everything was cooked to perfection, the broccoli al dente, steak perfectly medium rare, pasta perfectly boiled, but absolutely zero flavour in the dishes at all. It was sadly a disappointing meal, just a few touches of seasoning and herbs/spices here and there would have made a huge difference. Would probably try again, hoping for it to have improved.

Ok. This is the first time I write a long review. I had the lamb. Local, unique and extremely delicious. The hint of mint aroma is marvellous. My wife had the burger. She usually eats only half but this time she finished it because she couldn’t stop. My older son had a steak medium cooked juicy and delicious. My youngest had the chicken nuggets and he liked it. Now the brownie just came to the table and I am sorry I’ll not review it because I wanna consume the brownie hot and the ice cream cold.

A true gem in Windermere. Jackson’s Bistro offers the perfect dining experience — from the warm welcome to the final course. The food is simply wonderful: beautifully presented, full of flavour, and clearly made with passion and quality ingredients. The service was outstanding — friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which added to the relaxed yet refined atmosphere of the place. What really stood out was the attention to detail, both in the menu and the presentation. A huge thank you to Andrew and the team for making our (2 visits) so enjoyable. And for the help with our specific requirements due to my husband’s mobility issues. If you’re in Windermere, this is an absolute must-visit. Tucked away in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere, Jintana Thai Restaurant is a vibrant and stylish eatery that invites you to indulge in the rich flavors of authentic Thai cuisine. The restaurant boasts an inviting atmosphere adorned with exquisite imported Thai furniture, artwork, and carvings that transport you straight to Southeast Asia. Here, you'll find a diverse menu featuring freshly prepared dishes made by skilled chefs who use only the finest ingredients—some sourced directly from Thailand each week.
This place was surprisingly amazing! After recommendation from friends we gave it a go for our short weekend visit and Jintana did not disappoint. To start, the staff was on lovely, smiley and always ensured you are taken care of. Food wise, we loved everything. Spring rolls were tasty, the veg drunken noodles were the surprise spicy package and the Red Thai curry was the star! Definitely would come back to experience all the flavours again!

Nice place, glad we chose upstairs. Attentive service, reasonable prices, tamarind duck very nice, jungle curry a little too much just like a spicy broth. Chicken satay quite nice. Wine was good, overall a pleasant evening.

The Tempura Squid came with only 7 small pieces for £9.50 — definitely not worth the price. The Papaya Salad was underwhelming and tasted quite raw, nothing like the versions I’ve had in Thailand. What surprised me most was how quickly everything arrived — less than 10 minutes from ordering to table. It made me seriously question whether the food was freshly prepared. If it was pre-made, I could maybe understand the speed — but then at least make it tasty. Sadly, it wasn’t. The Tom Yum soup was overwhelmingly salty, and the curry lacked depth and flavor — honestly, I can make a better one at home. Overall, it felt like an overpriced, inauthentic experience. Definitely not a place I’d return to.

Last night, my husband and I went to a Thai restaurant in Windermere for my birthday. When we first arrived, it was quite busy, and I honestly felt a little unwelcomed at first. But then a staff member came over, noticed my hijab, and the very first thing she said was, “The chicken is halal, and we cook in separate pans.” I must have been the only Muslim there, so I really appreciated that gesture. We ended up going for seafood, salmon and prawns, and oh my goodness, the food was out of this world. The flavours were so rich and perfectly balanced, I can’t even put it into words. I had the special noodle soup with crispy noodles, and my husband had the pineapple rice. We also tried their Thai lime drinks, which were so refreshing. If you ever come to the Lake District, especially Windermere, I would 100% recommend this place. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the little touches, like being mindful about halal, made it even better.

The food was amazing there, we ordered green curry, as expected (8/10), one special noodle soup with pork, I have to say this is a must try. Both me and my friends were shocked and couldn’t stop thinking about it after we left the restaurant. If we went back to Lake District, I will defo visit Jintana again. The service is very good, we were served by a Thai lady, she is very kind and friendly, very helpful giving us recommendations, always come to check on us whenever she passed us. Recommended

Arrived before 6 and managed to order from the early dinner menu. 2 course for £18.95 Ordered corn fritters and green curry for the set, and a Khao Soi. Corn fritters had too much batter, green curry was fine. Khao Soi noodles were a tad too soft but overall taste was quite authentic.

The Hyltons Restaurant is a contemporary establishment that serves traditional British dishes, pasta, fish, and house-smoked pulled pork in a trendy setting. Located in Bowness-on-Windermere village, it offers a delightful dining experience after an exhaustive shopping spree. For those seeking diversity for dinner, Baha is recommended with its mouthwatering BBQ duck leg stir fry paired with Japanese junk fries.
Warm welcome and friendly atmosphere. Food arrived quickly and was hot throughout. Presentation was superb and staff were pleasant and polite. Would definitely recommend 👌

We each ordered a different main dish, and in my opinion, the best one was the BBQ burger — the pulled pork inside had a surprisingly good flavor. The Classic burger was a bit disappointing, as the patty was dry and overcooked. The swordfish was okay, though maybe a bit too firm in texture for my taste (might be because I haven’t had it before). The fish and chips came in a large portion, but the flavor was pretty average and nothing particularly special. The staff were polite at times, and the food was served quite quickly, which was a plus.

Really nice food - decent service. Lovely setting - we were sat upstairs, we found it decent that you didn’t have to book you could just walk in - offering flexibility etc. Quick and prompt service, wasn’t the cheapest meal but definitely worth it. Highly recommend the prawn starter, ribeye and sticky toffee pudding!

I kind of like that this place does not take bookings over the phone. It is an unconventional choice on their part that cleverly fills a gap in the market that is occupied by people like me, too busy enjoying the Lake District to remember to book a table. I was lucky enough to walk straight to a table for my visit, but if I had to wait that was kind of on me really. And sometimes it can be kind of reassuring to see that a place is busy enough that you need to wait. Staff were professional and courteous and service was as quick as I would expect when the place is busy. Food was nicely presented and there was a generous amount of it. The three scoops of ice cream dessert was noteworthy for the sheer volume that I received. Served in a seemingly bottomless Sundae glass, any future orders elsewhere will seem small by comparison. Cozy surroundings and a lively atmosphere round this one off quite nicely.

We popped along to Hyltons last night they have a policy of not accepting bookings it's first come first serve. We were lucky as it was around about 6.30pm and there were a few empty tables in the lower restaurant area so we sat in the window. On entering the staff were welcoming, friendly and polite. After being seated we ordered our gin and tonics and wine 🍷 then ordered our meals. The good lady had the sea bass from the specials menu and I had the BBQ ribs both dishes arrived in good time being well presented hot and delicious 😋. We would highly recommend Hyltons as the food is good quality and the service is spot on.

We had fantastic dining experience yesterday- served by great team on the upper level. We wanted to try unfortunately only able to order 4 meals ( 3 of us 😊😀). We ordered: sirloin steak ( good) , mussel ( food - a little too salty to my taste bud), beef burger ( very good) , swordfish ( not so good- better seabass if fish menu is preferred- looks yummier as our neighbor order it)

The food was absolutely incredible, and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant had a fantastic vibe, and the whole experience was a solid 10/10. We can't wait to come back

The two dishes that we ordered here were so bad that were not eatable, so I returned them to the chef. We ordered the Lancashire hot pot and the beef and ale pie. The hot pot was way too salty, it was so salty that you felt bitter in the mouth, so we stopped eating after one bite. The pie was slightly less salty than the hot pot, but still way too salty, we managed ate a few more bites then could not tolerate any more. Shall we put a tariff on salt, shall we not? Those were the worst food that we have ever had. We returned both dishes back to the chef. They did not apologize but desperately charged the full amount for the pie. The food was bad, the service was not better. The only positive thing here is that it won't be worse any more.

Booked the night before. Arrived on time and a lovely member of staff showed us to our table. On sitting down drinks and wine were ordered first Arrived at our table some minutes later and as ordered. We had the 10 inch garlic pizza 🍕 😋 and two cannelloni mains they all arrived hot well presented and delicious 😋 probably the best cannelloni we have had in some time. The staff were very warm, welcoming, friendly, polite and attentive..👏👏👌👌

We stopped by this pizza place for a bite and really enjoyed it. We ordered a bottle of house Chenin Blanc, which was light and pretty tasty. For food, we had a Margherita and a Pepperoni pizza. The place was quite full, but it had a nice vibe and the food didn’t take too long to arrive. The flavour of the pizzas was really good – we’d give it a solid 4.2 stars. The sauce had a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness, the cheese was delicious and generously layered, and the oregano and seasoning were spot on. Being able to add parmesan and pepper at the table was a nice touch. The only downside was the dough – while it had good flavour, it lacked the big air bubbles and lightness you often find in traditional Italian pizza. Still, it was tasty overall. To finish off, I had a latte – really simple, but tasty coffee. A great spot to enjoy some good food and drinks!

Lake Raj is a popular Indian restaurant located near the Lakes, offering a wide variety of Indian, Asian and Balti dishes. It has received numerous positive reviews and accolades for its excellent service and delicious food. The staff is known for being friendly and attentive, creating a lovely atmosphere for diners. The restaurant is also conveniently located near spa hotels and cottages, making it an ideal dining option for visitors to the area.
I had an excellent experience at this restaurant. The staff were attentive and handled everything with great care—they even warmed the plates for my lemon rice and lamb tikka korma, which was a thoughtful touch. After the meal, they offered a warm wet towel and surprised me with a complimentary birthday cake when I mentioned I was traveling to the Lake District for my birthday. There was a small hiccup with the bill—it should have been £24.70, and I asked them to round it to £25 as a tip. However, I was accidentally charged £35. I chose to view it optimistically, as covering the food, service, and a generous tip altogether. Despite that, the overall experience, service, and atmosphere were wonderful. It was absolutely worth dining here.

Lake Raj Bangladeshi Restaurant Review Food (4/5) While the food was enjoyable, it wasn’t outstanding. The prawn puree starter had a generous portion of prawns, though the puree itself was not as soft and flaky as expected. The main courses (mix grills, lamb chops, chicken biryani, and prawn bhuna) were solid but didn’t surpass previous experiences. Service (5/5) Exceptional service with highly attentive staff. Plates were cleared quickly after the starter, and hot plates were promptly provided for the main course. Atmosphere (4/5) The restaurant’s exterior was appealing, but the interior decor didn’t quite match the expectations set by the outside. However, the facilities, including the clean toilet, were well-maintained. Overall, Lake Raj offers a pleasant dining experience with great service, decent food, and a comfortable atmosphere.

Booked a table for 2x. Prices for the beer is extortionate, lamb tikka starter was very very fatty / chewy as though not cooked properly. ( lamb can be chewy but not like you could chew it for a month ) Felt very rushed and the staff were just walking around as if they didn’t want to be there. Atmosphere mood was very low and not very welcoming at all. I also looked around and staff members did ask people how there food was…. Why didn’t you ask us? Is it just as of when you feel like it? For such a location you should all be dressed smart where as the one lad had curry all Over his sleeves on his white shirt. Take pride in what you do and welcome customers for a great experience in a great location in the UK. To eat popadoms / starters and mains all in less than an hour is very rushed food! Very disappointed. And for £56 I feel Iv had my wallet dipped.

Lovely cocktail bar located in Bowness, by lake Windermere. Lovely service and atmosphere. Good selection of cocktails, but pricey. Extra £5 for their signature version of classic cocktails, with not much difference to the classic version on the menu - ie: smoke in an old fashioned.

Lacking a savoury aspect, sandwiches small and skinny and bread dry. This was £68 for two, voucher bought last November 2024 when the afternoon tea looked indulgent now September 2025 and the owners obviously cutting back and using cheaper ingredients. Would not go back, would advise this is worth no more than £17 pp.

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Restaurant
If you're looking for a great, clean fish and chip takeaway in the heart of the village, look no further than Vinegar Jones. The fish is always fresh and served up quickly, making it the perfect place to grab a quick meal on-the-go. Plus, the friendly staff make it easy to enjoy your food without fuss.
This was a brilliant joint to grab dinner, with the menu options clearly displayed at the counter! Customers can see the food being fried which ensures being aware of the hygiene level and service was fast, appreciate how they do tartare sauce as this is rare for takeaways. The fish and chips tasted quality and the skin on the fish had a softness that felt comforting to tuck into, prices are higher than usual worth it for the product though!
K. P — Google review
We visited Vinegar Jones and were impressed from start to finish. Between us we had fish and chips, battered sausage and chips, pie and chips, and fishcake and chips. Every meal was freshly cooked, piping hot, and so tasty. The fish was perfectly flaky with light, crisp batter, the chips were golden and crunchy on the outside with a soft centre, with good portion sizes. The menu looks good for vegetarian and coeliac options too. The shop itself was spotless, which is always a big plus, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier – really welcoming and happy to help. It made the whole visit a pleasure. A proper traditional chippy done right – great food, great service, and excellent value. We’ll definitely be back and would happily recommend to anyone in the area looking for a top-quality fish and chip shop!

If I could give it less than a 1 star review I would. Awfully small portions, rude staff and overall shockingly unwelcome atmosphere. We bought the small fish and chips and it was one small fish portion chopped in half. Didn’t look anything like the pictures. Will not be coming here again, avoid!
T K — Google review
Lovely portion of fish (haddock) and chips. Fish wasn’t cooked to order so was held in the hot hold. Fish and chips were tasty. Batter on the fish not too thick or crispy. If you require ketchup it’s 60p a go. Inside eating area closed but 2 or 3 tables that seat two people outside along the main road.
Jordan G — Google review
They literally served cold fish and chips. Didnt make fresh one. Tasted really bad. I told them its cold and not fresh. They didnt replace or give the fresh ones. Honestly i was not expecting this. Expensive and bad.
Muhammad U — Google review
Chips and cheese apparently regular £5-50. Picture shows how big that is. £8-50 for the pie and chips. I get costs are up and it's a tourist place but this isn't worth it at all anymore. Shame as used to love it here.
Trisha S — Google review
Sadly overpriced and undercooked following a long wait. The quality of the food was poor and didn’t match the high price. Bowness used to be a fabulous place but I don’t think we’ll be back for a long time. Prices are hiked up (nearly £ 30 for two meals from here), customer service has declined, and crowding of the village is becoming an issue. We didn’t enjoy being there and didn’t enjoy this food experience either.
Alison P — Google review
We called up to place an order and were told it would be ready in 10–15 minutes. When we arrived just over 15 minutes later, it was clear they hadn’t actually started our order until we turned up and paid. The staff were polite and friendly, and the place itself was spotlessly clean, but unfortunately the food just wasn’t great. The fish looked and tasted like it had been sat for a while, the batter was soft and soggy, the fish inside was dry and only lukewarm. The gravy was so thick it was almost jelly-like, and the pies, while packed with meat, didn’t seem to have any sauce or gravy inside at all. Price-wise it’s on the steep side, but I suppose that’s to be expected being right in the centre of town.

The Wateredge Inn in Ambleside offers charming rooms, some with private entrances, within a relaxed lakeside pub featuring a vibrant restaurant. The inn is known for its dog-friendly environment, welcoming furry friends in designated indoor and outdoor areas with stunning views of Lake Windermere. Situated on over an acre of private grounds with a jetty overlooking the lake, it provides direct access to the shore for picturesque walks.
We stayed here for a night, on our first trip to the Lake District. The room was very unique, a much more interesting experience than your standard corporate hotel. I found the balcony and bathtub to be stand out features. We were in the building across the street, so not lake front. But you were able to park right outside your room making luggage easy to deal with. Food at the restaurant was good, and the bar was a nice place to spend time. You are a little bit outside of the town center, so it’s more quiet. It takes about 15 minutes to walk along the lake road to the town. The only real complaint we had was that the couch pull out bed was pretty uncomfortable for adults. So unless you are just putting kids in it, you might be better off just bringing an air mattress I would gladly stay here again.

Lovely stay! Great location to explore Ambleside and surrounding area. Easy to get to, parking sorted at checking, plus you get free parking on the day you check out too! Room clean and comfortable. Ample and cozy decoration. Breakfast was brilliant, really good spread and relaxed setup with delicious cooked breakfast. The pub was a big plus!!! Lovely fish and chips and super fast service! Food arrived perfectly cooked and hot! Of course really good fish and chips, light batter and well cooked. Great stay, highly recommend!

We stayed here just for a night and have a very comfortable stay. They bed was just the right firmness, not too soft, not too hard, so we both managed to get a good nights rest. There are some amenities in the room such as tea and coffee making, although the room could really do with a mini fridge. We brought out plug in cool box to allow us to have cold drinks. The bathroom was small, although the shower pressure was good, and it was nice to see good quality soap and shampoo / shower gel. The breakfast was average. It's a buffet style and the quality of the food wasn't great, e.g. the hash browns were soggy and oily, the eggs were overdone, and whilst I like buttered mushrooms, these were on another scale of butteredness! We also found the staff weren't too attentive with us to begin with. The hotel is ideally located though, right next to the lake. It's really lovely to sit at, especially in the evening having a beer or two. Overall we had a lovely time, and would go back.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room was very comfortable, bathroom maybe a little small, very large, comfortable bed though. Breakfast was fine, help yourself buffet style. Lots of dog walkers here, so you have to not mind them. The hotel is ideally situated right next to the lake and there is also free parking for residents. We enjoyed our stay, and would recommend.

I just spent two nights here and it was fantastic! The room was spot on – massive bed, spotless, and those toiletries smelled amazing. The food / breakfast was delicious. The staff were lovely, making check-in a breeze and checking in on me during meals. I left feeling truly pampered and can't wait to come back! Amazing location with stunning views of Windermere

The Wateredge Inn is the perfect location for a pint on a sunny afternoon. Nice decor, amazing views. However the staff seem to swan about aimlessly and they desperately need more staff on the bar as it can easily take 20+ minutes waiting for a pint. There is plenty of seating and if it is full good luck. It’s a victim of its own success.

I simply CAN NOT express how AWFUL this place was, i would genuinely give 0 stars if that was an option, not a single good point could be made. Our visit was on 10th April, around lunch time. When ordering we seemed to be one of three other tables, so not at all busy. We were ‘greeted’ by the rudest man I have ever come across in hospitality, but by far the worst thing about our visit was the food. It is still repeating on us days later.. I will attach a photo of my ‘carbonara’ which was literally plain pasta with SCRAMBLED egg and fatty bacon. I was asked if I wanted cream??? in what world does an authentic italian eatery offer CREAM in a carbonara?? it’s literally one of the simplest dishes you can offer! The cheesy garlic bread was also like one of those cheap ones you get after a night out from some back street kebab shop. Tasted absolutely rank. Not sure if the chefs were the usual ones you use.. but they couldn’t cook an italian dish to save their lives… If you are reading this review and considering attending this place, please do not waste your time or money. I genuinely wish I had spent my £60 at costa down the road..
Rebecca — Google review
A Culinary Crime Scene Masquerading as Carbonara To call what was served to me “carbonara” would be a gross misuse of language — and frankly, an insult to anyone possessing functioning taste buds. What arrived at my table was not a dish but a cautionary tale. The pasta, first and most grievously, was cooked to a state I can only describe as culinary negligence. Limp, bloated, and robbed of all dignity, each strand disintegrated in my mouth like a tragic soliloquy. Whoever manned the pot clearly believes that al dente is a myth invented to torment them. Then came the bacon — or rather, its pale, quivering impersonation. Instead of the crisp, golden shards one might expect from a competent kitchen, I was met with rubbery strips of undercooked fat, audibly weeping under the faintest pressure of my fork. It was as though the chef had shown the pan to the bacon from across the room and then decided their work was done. The sauce, meanwhile, possessed the texture of overworked wallpaper paste, clinging to the pasta with the clingy desperation of a bad ex. The flavor was a discordant mess: egg cooked into chalk, cheese dumped with all the subtlety of a snowstorm, and not a hint of the luxurious silkiness that carbonara so gloriously demands. This was not an unfortunate misstep; it was a calculated ambush on Italian cuisine. If Dante were alive to witness this, he’d be forced to carve a tenth circle of hell for whoever masterminded it. One star — awarded solely to the cutlery, which, unlike the dish, did not personally offend me.
Lucy P — Google review
Great atmosphere but horrible food. Do not recommend. Food came quickly. Table service was good. I ordered gnocchi pesto but it was so bland and oily. Pesto was likely not fresh. I could not finish my food despite being famished after a 10-km hike. My friend ordered a Margherita with extra buffalo cheese on top. The restaurant actually ruined it by baking the buffalo cheese with the pizza. We also got some salad which was fine. Although the service was alright, there was nothing good to mention about the food.
Print S — Google review
Food was alright, and our server was three days on the job and a very sweet young lad. However, we had an older Italian man with glasses bring us our food and he was quite rude to my father. Not sure if he thought we were American, but he was short and snippy with him when my father said he wasn’t made aware of all the cheese on the potatoes (he’s lactose intolerant). 3 stars. 4 for food (it was delicious), 3 for the service (the little English lad saved this, it was gonna be a 2), and 3 for atmosphere (no air con, and HOT HOT HOT).

The Arrabbiata pasta was absolutely delicious — full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The shrimp were fresh and tasty, though a bit on the spicy side. Service could’ve been better; we waited about 10–15 minutes before anyone approached us. That said, once we ordered, the food arrived incredibly fast — within 5–10 minutes. Myself and husband have stayed since Tuesday going home this morning. The check in was smooth we were greeted by Luke who is very polite and showed us to our room. The room was spotlessly clean thanks to Carrissa the cleaner with a great bathroom including huge walk in shower but the best bit is the view of the lake I could never get board of that. We stayed in room 8. The bar 🍻 was great as well lovely and cosy again with fantastic service from Luke who by the way does the most amazing cocktails. We were literally just a few steps from the restaurants and eateries but the Angel Inn just down the road 5 mins walk does delicious food and also Mio Mondo 2 mins walk away for the best breakfasts and toasties. The lake is also just at the bottom of the road we recommend you do the boat 🚢 trip. We would most definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone. So tasty and stuffed full of gorgeous fish, topped off with golden cheesey mash. Peas and samphire also cooked to perfection. Husband had the Korean chicken thigh burger which he said was excellent, high praise from him

We visited the Wildflower restaurant downstairs for a sunday roast and it was hands down, the best roast dinner we have ever had. Everything was delicious and huge portions making it great value. Speedy service, great layout and atmosphere and lovely staff. Cannot recommend the sunday roast here enough!

Don't judge a book by it's covers... Booked Sunday Lunch, feared the worst when we walked through the pub door.. How wrong I could be... Staff very friendly, restaurant downstairs, had the roast beef Sunday lunch, what can I say ... This chef can cook a proper roast, med rare rump of beef, all the trimmings, good gravy, and to finish proper pudding!! Absolutely spot on, eaten at far pricer establishments and had nowhere near the quality of food... A hidden gem....

Popped in this afternoon for a well earned pint 🍺🍺 after driving 🚗 down from Edinburgh. Booked a table for a evening meal. We had the honey 🍯 grilled gammon with two fried eggs 🍳 and 🍟 along with the cider battered cod 🐟 and 🍟, the food arrived well presented hot 🔥 and delicious 😋. Staff very welcoming, friendly, helpful and attentive. Highly recommend 👌 👍 👏.

Nice big room. Decent shower room. Nice tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided. The only thing was we were at the front of the building. Must be a loose manhole cover on the road and it was loud when cars drove over. Not the hotels fault. Nice, helpful check in. Fantastic location.

Avoid this bar! Was in last night (Wed 1st Oct) with my wife sitting at a high table having some drinks. Went to the toilet and when I came back an old female sitting at the bar had taken my seat away and was sitting on it ! Obviously the bar stool she had been already sitting on wasn't big enough for her! There were plenty of free seats but she wanted mine. My wife was still sitting at the table and challenged her . She ignored her and started bitching away with her herd. I told my wife to drink up and l went outside to order a taxi . I was followed by a male in the women's company to see what I was doing. He stayed outside listening in until I went back inside . We grabbed our jackets and waited outside for the taxi. Everywhere else locals have been great such a shame area let down by a few entitled privilidged idiots. Only 1 star as I have to give it some sort of rating.

Copper Pot is a charming and dog-friendly cafe located in Ambleside. The cafe offers a cozy atmosphere with a rustic stone wall, an open fire for winter warmth, and a lovely garden for outdoor dining in the summer. It's a great spot to enjoy breakfast, sandwiches, snacks, and cakes before heading out for a day of exploration. The cafe is known for its top-quality coffee sourced and roasted locally.
What a little Gem!!! Stopped her for some breakfast on the way home from camping and so glad we did, the food was delicious, all fresh, all free range. We also had to take one of their delicious cakes for the road, it would have been rude not to. Staff were very friendly, service amazingly quick, and they had Yorkshire Tea which makes them eligible for a Michelin star in my eyes lol Prices were very good as well, didn’t break the bank. Very cool decor, with cartoons projected on the wall as you ate. Highly recommended! Will definitely come back on my next visit.

We tried the halloumi avocado toast, but it wasn’t really our favorite as the halloumi was fried and a bit heavy. On the other hand, the garlic truffle mushroom dish was absolutely delicious! We also ordered a pot of tea, which was nice and comforting. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the overall experience enjoyable

Had I not checked on Google Maps, I'd have never even known this place was here. But after walking from Troutbeck to Ambleside, my mum and I had a look around a few shops, then decided to find somewhere that had gluten-free options. After browsing over a couple, we decided on the Copper Pot. When we arrived, we noticed a couple queueing for a table, which must be a good sign! It wasn't long at all, before we were seated and taking in our surroundings. The place is super cosy with the slate interior wall, the lighting, the music and general atmosphere, all which made for an amazing experience. There was a fab selection of cakes available, including chocolate stout cake, coconut, carrot and pineapple cake, a peanut butter cake and a few others, along with some gluten free options including courgette and avocado cake and orange and almond cake, both which looked amazing! The drinks we had were awesome, especially my hot chocolate whereby I could choose my preferred cocoa strength. My mum decided on the courgette and avocado cake (don't know it until you try it), while I chose the coconut, carrot and pineapple cake. Quite a combination of flavours, but they worked very well! I could certainly taste the coconut, along with hints of pineapple. Super moist and delicious from the first bite, right to the very last! I also loved the cutlery we got, which were spades as spoons! Altogether, this came to a little over £16 which I think is fantastic value for money. The service was also great, and the young lady who served us was very pleasant from start to finish. We will, without a doubt, certainly be coming back here when we next visit Ambleside. Well worth a visit!!!!

Had Sunday brunch here, though we seemed to be the only ones who ordered that 🙈 Had the beef and the lamb, lamb was better. Waited awfully long for the food though! People who ordered pizzas or burgers seemed to have gotten them faster.

Had the beef rib main, it just melted off the bone! Huge portion, tasted unbelievable. The mash, veg, gravy/jus was just incredible too! Cant wait to come back and try more on the menu. Excellent value for money too especially for the quality of the food! Gluten free options available (shame the fries were cooked in the same fryer as some of the other gluten products- but the waitress informed us of this before we ordered thankfully)! and they are also dog friendly too! Very welcoming and super friendly. Don’t walk past this place! You must try it!!

I had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant today. We ordered two hamburgers and honestly, it was the worst one I've ever had. The meat had absolutely no flavor—it tasted like it had been boiled, not grilled. There was no seasoning, no texture, just a bland, soggy mess. I couldn't even finish it, and that's saying a lot because I almost never leave food on my plate. If you're looking for a good burger, I suggest you look elsewhere. This place seriously needs to rethink how they prepare their food.

Such a lovely place to eat out. We had a dog with us, so they made sure she has some water to drink and everyone was so lovely. We went there at least a few times during out stay as it's tucked in away from all the crowds, but still very close to the main areas of the city. They have loads of choice for all sorts of food, so there is definitely something for everyone. Food itself is a little bit on the pricey side, but the quality is well worth to pay for. They also had some live music on the weekend. Would definitely visit again!

If you're in Ambleside, this pie maker is a must-stop. They've got a great selection of pies, and the gravy is top-notch. The only downside is that it's not the nicest place to sit, but they're open late so you can still get your pies after dark.
FANTASTIC PIES! Nothing to complain about really. Everything was good and on point. The only downside of the place is its smaller and tucked away but... its worth the trip down! Shared with my partner the 14 hours braised beef and it was an absolute Gem of a Pie. Recommended to add either the Mash or Peas too. I added the roast onion gravy as i liked my flavours soaked! Definitely a recommend!

The most delicious slow roasted beef EVER! Was able to make 2 visits while on hols, took daughter on return visit, she totally agreed… she had the chicken. On top of the pie success, the mash was FABULOUS and I have no words for THAT GRAVY!!!! OH MY WORD!! The staff are so lovely, couldn’t be more helpful. Our only concern was that we just couldn’t possibly leave any inc that incredible gravy! We had it served in a little jug for precise application! 🤣 Best Pie, Mash & Gravy EVER!!!!!
Janet M — Google review
This pie shop really use to hit, but today we were left really disappointed, we use to love visiting and leaving with a lovely hot pie to walk around the town, but today was asked if we were eating in or out… we answered out but were handed 2 cold pies…? When i asked about having them heated he answered we don’t do that no more but im not sure why? This seem bizarre… you offer a service to eat in & you have all the heating equipment but can’t offer to heat up the pie for customers to walk out with warm… the only added thing needed is the take away pots? Which you had to an extent for the gravy & mash? You only needed a larger one to house all 3 together & some take away cutlery? My other gripe was 2 pies just chucked into a paper bag which could have been put in a box which you have on the shelves? We’ve been here lots of times. For a pie shop that was dead at 1:30/2pm with 2 staff on, I now have to wait till tomorrow to arrive home and eat these instead.

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming village of High Newton, Heft is a delightful transformation of an old pub into a sophisticated dining experience that opened its doors in the summer of 2021. The brainchild of local couple Kevin and Nicola Tickle, this restaurant showcases their deep-rooted connection to Cumbria's culinary heritage. With Kevin’s impressive background at renowned establishments like L'Enclume and Forest Side, diners can expect a menu that reflects both innovation and tradition.
We went for the £50 set lunch mid-week and very much enjoyed it. It is interesting and well-prepared food and in general the service was very good. The wine list gets a special mention as it has a lot of interesting wines by the glass. My main criticism would be that they do not have a phone so if you have any last minute issues (which we did) there's no quick way to give them a heads up. Would definitely go again.
Alex P — Google review
We went to Heft for Sunday Dinner full of high expectations. This is not our first time at a Michelin starred restaurant and have been to a few in the area that have been fantastic. We received a warm welcome in the bar on arrival and had drinks whilst we waited for our table. We ordered the beef, which can only be ordered for two people, not individually. All the sides were lovely although I think it’s a bit much that you are charged extra for gravy and it wasn’t that flavoursome! Our biggest issue was the beef. I like my beef rare but only when it is a good piece of beef. Ours had a lot of sinew in it and therefore was not easy to eat. We had a few pieces that were ok but not particularly full of flavour. Both the desserts we had were nice- pavlova and sticky toffee pudding but pretty standard. The staff were efficient but not particularly engaging and just seemed to want to put the food down and go. We really wanted this to be a great experience and it’s such a shame it fell short.
Helen W — Google review
I think we were expecting too much. Four of us walked an hour from where we were staying as this was the nearest place with food. We didn't want the posh dining so went for the bar food. The two things we all wanted were sold out (it wasn't late) so we elected for shepherds pie. This turned out to be a very small pie (almost comedically so tbh), with gravy and red cabbage. There were no other veggies available. Whilst tasty, it was very small, and there were no options to add sides. The gravy was excellent, but I don't consider it to be a side. Pudding was a small bar of chocolate. All in, one of the most disappointing pub meals I've ever had. Beers were good, so no complaints there. Atmosphere quite nice in an old pub that's been updated kind of way. I think this place needs to rethink what it's doing in the bar area - why have a Michelin starred restaurant in one half, and then something so disappointing in the other?

I made this reservation after searching for a nice place to visit to finish our holiday in The Lake District. For us Heft was a 25/30min drive from our accommodation. We were not disappointed, everything from the bread and butter to our desserts was fantastic. We had the Sunday 2 course menu and chose the beef which was melt in the mouth moorish! We ordered additional sides, definitely more than we needed but wanted to try everything that appealed to us. Heft is located in a lovely spot, even if you just wanted to sit outside with a glass of something refreshing. I would definitely visit again and would recommend to anyone in the area to try.
Yasmin D — Google review
Early evening Sunday dinner was delicious at Heft. We had the hoggett with cauliflower and macaroni cheese; we didn't need the potatoes as portions are generous. Good quality ingredients simply but deliciously done. The absolute stand out of the meal was the sticky toffee pudding which tasted like the hard toffee my grandma used to make - I'd go back just for that. Great wine and friendly service too.
Sarah P — Google review
Lovely country location. The front of the restaurant is rustic, the main dining is done in a modern theme, I preferred the rustic look. The food was not amazing. Some dishes were salty and flavors were either too strong. Nothing was delightful. The food presentation was to a hight standard, but the proof is in the eating. Sadly we did not enjoy the food.
The S — Google review
We went to Heft for their famous Sunday lunch to celebrate a family occasion. And their already amazing reputation came out of this unscathed. The food was fantastic in every respect: presentation, variety, generous portions (yes, we did take a “Heftovers” bag home), and oh-so-delicious taste and flavours. Service, especially from junior serving staff, was great.

The Bluebird Cafe on the Bay is a charming spot located near Coniston Water, offering picturesque views of the lake and the passing Steam Yacht Gondola. The cafe also features a covered heated terrace and ample parking. It's an ideal place to grab breakfast before embarking on a hike or take a mid-day break while exploring Bowness.

I am disheartened to see the sale of so much plastic, bottled water, and other plastic bottled beverages at your café. We are in the throes of a plastic pollution crisis. When a café bordering a lake within a parks district (that welcomes millions of tourists who come to enjoy and learn from these ecosystems) profits off the sale of a material that is degrading this very space, it demonstrates an immense sense of cognitive dissonance. And perhaps, even worse, it normalizes passive degradation of the environment, by the way of our purchases. I believe you could at least sell aluminum, canned water, which is far more infinitely recyclable. Or, you could choose to cease the sale of single used plastics completely. How are visitors to this gorgeous town, or how the residents who live here, supposed to build a stronger connection to this environment if their only options for sustenance come wrapped in plastic that is destructing this very space? By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. And over 95% of the plastic we produce and consume does not actually get recycled, even when we try to make it so. Knowing that, what are you going to do to stop normalizing Plastic use? What is your responsibility as a purveyor located on a profiting from the health of a lake? Thank you for considering my feedback. It will take both the customer and the purveyor to stop normalizing and perpetuating the plastic pollution crisis.

Unprofessional Conduct by staff My family and I visited this cafe last week, anticipating a pleasant experience; instead, we were subjected to a deeply distressing and humiliating ordeal. Upon arrival, I escorted my family to a bench outside to seat them while I proceeded to order at the queue. Within moments, we were aggressively confronted by two staff members: a young woman and an older man. The man immediately began shouting at us, demanding that we vacate the premises because we didn’t order any stuff. His hostility was triggered solely by the sight of my daughter's unopened lunch box, which we carry due to her food allergies. I attempted to explain our situation –that my daughter doesn’t consume her food there. Just the children needs to be seated to avoid the heat while I was en route to place an order. However, the staff refused to listen and continue rising his voice in front of my children. This egregious lack of professionalism and basic compassion ruined our day. Later on my daughter started crying because she through it was her fault due to her lunch box. This establishment, under the direction of this staff, does not deserve a single star. We strongly advise families to avoid this cafe at all costs to prevent similar experience. The staff demonstrates disregard for common decency and customer dignity.

Popped into The bluebird cafe for a quick bite to eat whilst on a boat switchover. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful tasting brie, cranberry and bacon toastie and the BEST brownie I have ever had. It melted in my mouth. Ended up going back for seconds a few hours later. 👌

All drinks served in take-away cups even if sitting in 😡 Not impressed. Ok so it has a small serving area but I've seen smaller cafes do better. Everything was served in single use plastic or 'paper' trays (plastic lined paper trays for sure) which is so lazy and a lack of thought for the environment when throwing everything away like that. But of course it save staff costs washing up which seems to be the name of the game these days. The scones were like shop bought, in fact not even that good! They were dry. I expected better but we were tired and needed a pit stop so didnt complain because the real clotted cream and jam(in, you guessed it plastic containers) just about saved it. Not that it looked like the staff would care if I did complain, bless them! They were friendly enough in an arms length kind of way. Its a small place on the side of the tourist info centre so just half a dozen tables. The table was clean but I expected better overall from a place like this after spending over £30. At least they had proper clotted cream and they gave me extra jam without hesitation which I can't knock them for. Not the best choice of cafe there's loads nicer nearby the amusements and up the hill in Bowness.

Popped in for a refreshing drink on the bank holiday. Service was quick and courteous. Myself and my partner both had a tropical smoothie (unfortunately they had ran out of ingredients for the berry version). Both were served in plastic cups with paper straws. Whilst they did taste very nice without to many chunks the price was on the high end of what I would pay. Apart from this I was happy with my little stop at the bluebird.

The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is a quaint establishment located in the Lake District village, known for its unique and delectable gingerbread invented by Victorian cook Sarah Nelson in 1854. The shop also offers an assortment of other treats such as rum butter, fudge, mint cake, toffees, chocolates, and conserves. The historic shop continues to produce the renowned gingerbread using Nelson's original recipe and has garnered a global following.
Tiny shop. The best fresh baked gingerbread biscuit. No preservatives. You can buy just one or packages of 6 or 12. They also have chocolates, fudge, lip balm, lotion and much more. Their is a little bit of a wait in line but well worth it.

The smell of the Gingerbread cookies tingles your senses even before you enter the shop. Easy to find, parking just a 2 min walk away. Gets busy very quickly and always a que. Loved the traditional Sarah Nelson's gingerbread. Bought some rum butter, ginger caramel and ginger lemon curd, must say it was tasty.

This place can get very busy, as it seems to be on most visitors lake district to do list (myself included) Got here early though and was able to walk straight in with no wait. Arrive pre 10am to give yourself best chance of avoiding the crowds. The interior of the shop is a feast for the senses. Exuding Olde worlde charm from every corner, and the air is thick with the smell of the gingerbread. To taste it has very little in common with the gingerbread we are all used to, and is so much the better for it. A very dense and chewy texture that almost borders on crunchy. Warm flavor that lingers nicely after the initial mouthful. Does not keep well, but for me that didn't matter as I would have eaten it all long before thinking of keeping any. Definitely try to tick this box on your list, you'll be glad you did.

A lovely callback to the classic, one assumes! The shop was fantastic fun on a pouring rainy day. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and quick. The queue does not reflect their speed, as the doors are just a bit narrow as it’s a very old building.

Tasty, needed to go back for some more after trying it. Long queue but move fast. Daffodil garden and Wordworth family graves are nearby. Recommend to sit down and enjoy the gingerbread with the coffee at Grasmere Tea Garden, nice view and flat white!

This is such a quaint, iconic place and must see in Gracemere. The gingerbread is delicious as well as the dairy milk chocolate with ginger bits and affordable price too. The chocolate with pumpkin spice was my least favourite and for acquired taste. The queue is long and no shleter when it's raining. There is no seating area, which would've enhanced the positive experience. Nonetheless, I would visit again.

Smells incredible as you walk up to it. Cute little shop, nice to know the history behind it. However, very small inside, barely enough room for more than one couple at a time. Doesn't give much opportunity to browse products when there's a queue of people waiting to come in. Glad I saw this but wouldn't hurry back. Gingerbread taste delicious though.
Beth — Google review
We’re not huge fans of gingerbread in general, but having heard so much about this famous one, we had to try it. And it didn’t disappoint! It was very decadent, soft, not too overpowering ginger flavour, a mix between biscuit and cake. A must try if you’re in the area.

We were thankful to find this place open on the evening before the Fred Whitton when only one other place was open and said to be fully booked. The staff hadn't planned on staying open but because demand was high they fed us. I had a huge portion of fish and chips with the most amazing homemade tartar sauce. My partner had the gammon and chips and struggled to eat it all. We couldn't resist the large section of lovely cake, we bought 2 to take with us and got a tasty bit of lemon cake on the house. The guy that took our order was run off his feet, seating people, taking orders, making drinks, clearing tables and helping in the kitchen. The place was buzzing and we left very full and happy, thank you!

Not pg tips as my mum said. We would definitely go back and try some other foods out. R x

The location is fine, the staff are lovely but the food just isn't that great (and it's very expensive). We've been several times as we live close-by and it's just consistently "ok". Today we had sandwiches and soup. One cup of soup with a sandwich is £15. My sandwich, a beef and horseradish did not contain any horseradish and instead was coated in mayonnaise. Beef was tough and the whole thing was really difficult to eat. The soup was an abomination, it tasted like it had burned during cooking and they'd just served it anyway. Neither my husband nor I could eat it (and my husband eats literally everything usually! 😭) Our daughter had a burger and that was decent, so I guess there are some menu items they get right. I hope Ambio continue to do well as they have several locations now in our area.. I just think we'll avoid it from now on.

Not what you'd expect from a cafe where people are hiking and cycling. Quite an expensive sit down restaurant type place. The only "to go" savoury option at lunch time was a hefty sausage roll with no price marked. Asked if they had any sandwiches to take on our walk and they were happy to make a simple ham and cheese on white but it would be the same £10 price as their proper plated sandwiches. £10 for two slices of bread, and a slice of ham and cheese! Coffee was actually quite good, but also not offered as takeaway. Also probably a good place for dogs, they had four different types of foods on counter ready for them.

Great dog friendly cafe with lovely staff. My group enjoyed their burgers and drinks (tea and perfect hot chocolate). Sadly my carrot and coriander soup was a disappointment. It was actually a stiff puree, not a soup at all - my spoon actually stood up in it!

Another dramatically over priced Lake District cafe. E.g £5.50 for a scone, even without cream/jam. Forestry Commission cafés use to be quite good but the current incumbents/franchisees are taking advantage of the locations and lack of competition.

Bought a kids lunchbox for £7.50 and it was absolutely awful!!!!!! One bruised and wrinkled apple Pombears Cheap carton of orange juice And the ‘cheese sandwich’ was a complete joke. A stale brioche bun with 2 square peices of cheese in it with no butter, not even wrapped in abit of cling film. I’m sorry but the cafe should be ashamed.

Captive audience unless you take along a pack lunch. Soup & sandwich £15, feels very overpriced…. Positives - staff were friendly and cafe is a decent size.

Absolute rip off, $4 for tiny piece of cake, unfriendly staff, didn't seem to know what they were doing. No atmosphere and premises was not that clean. One to avoid.
