Chesters By The River is a bright and modern cafe located in the Lake District, offering a riverside deck where visitors can enjoy homemade lunch, wood-fired pizza, and classic cakes. Despite the usual lack of conscientious food venues in tourist areas, this cafe stands out as a gem with its great food at reasonable prices.
I come here more than I care to admit. Mostly because they are a reliable place to get a great coffee and cake that are gluten and dairy free. The outdoor seating is beautiful and picturesque and the shop next door is perfect for interior inspiration or picking up gifts.
Olivia L — Google review
Chesters by the River one of best relaxing and stylish cafes. The location alone makes it worth the stop, right beside the river with peaceful views, plenty of greenery, and a calm atmosphere that feels perfect after a long walk around Skelwith Bridge. The food is excellent and beautifully presented. Their cakes and pastries are fresh, the wood-fired food tastes amazing, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I tried their coffee and a slice of cake, and both were top-quality, rich flavours and clearly made with care. What I really liked is how well-designed the place is inside. It has a warm, modern look with lots of natural light, and all the little details make it feel cosy yet high-end. The staff were friendly, quick, and welcoming, even though it was quite busy. It’s a perfect spot for brunch, a break during a hike, or just to sit by the river and relax for a while. Prices are fair for the quality, and the overall experience feels special. Definitely a must-visit if you're exploring the Lake District.
Hassnain K — Google review
An absolute gem of a vegan/vegetarian coffee shop set in the heart of the stunning Lake District. It’s honestly disappointing to see negative reviews simply because they don't serve animal products — especially in a region overflowing with places that cater to meat eaters. The food here is absolutely delicious; so well crafted that if you didn’t know, you’d never guess it was entirely plant-based. A perfect spot for anyone who appreciates great food, beautiful surroundings, and a more conscious, kind way of eating. Easily 5 stars!
Gabriella M — Google review
Really lovely place. Setting is beautiful. Walked our dog along the river quickly before settling down to eat and we sat outside on the pretty veranda. Went on bank hol weekend so expected to wait a bit but got a table straight away, ordered straight away and food came out quickly! I don't know what the other negative reviews are talking about! Staff were super friendly, chatty and helpful. Food was delicious. Got a salad plate for lunch and then a take away vegan sausage roll and rocky rd for tea after a walk around Rydal water, they were also both so tasty. We are already planning to come back in a few weeks as it was so nice!
Kate — Google review
Great coffee enjoyed by the river. Service was friendly. Great range of cakes. There's an emphasis on vegetarian food here, with some delicious lunch options.
Tim R — Google review
Lovely cafe by the river. Really good food and very filling. Had half a frittata and a blueberry scone. The scone was just perfect. Staff were friendly. The only downside is how busy it gets at peak lunch time in summer when during the week. Prepare to queue.
Deborah E — Google review
Absolutely amazing food and all Plant-Based. Huge portions and very reasonably priced. Lots of parking available. I'd recommend parking in Elterwater and walking along the River Brathay to get here. I had the Carrot Cake and a Flat White. Loads of gorgeous cakes

Nestled in the heart of Windermere, Homeground Coffee + Kitchen is a popular brunch spot offering a variety of delectable treats. Whether you're in the mood for sweet pastries or savory classics like bacon sandwiches and Eggs Benny, this cafe has got you covered. Since its opening in 2015, it has become a go-to destination for locals and visitors alike, known for its all-day brunch menu with American influences.
Oh excellent food! Each & every dish we ordered was made to perfection. The tase was par excellence. Cheese was too good and the breads were freshly baked. Food had soul. The owners were very warm, the place is very nice. It's a small cafe but wonderful food. One of the best in Windermere.
Shaily M — Google review
Homeground Coffee is a must try! We couldn’t resist their cake selection, all the cakes were beyond exceptional. As for their coffee, it has a perfectly strong taste. The cafe has a great location, right in the middle of the city center. I will definitely be returning!
Jaber M — Google review
I had one of the best cakes at this café. The brunch was amazing too — especially the avocado and eggs. The staff are lovely, and the place has such a warm and welcoming vibe. Just keep in mind that many people love this spot, so there’s usually a queue of at least 15 minutes, especially on weekends! 🍰✨
EliInspire — Google review
An insanely good breakfast and brunch cafe in Windermere! Just a few minutes walk from the train station, this is the best brunch me and my girlfriend had on our Lake District trip. So much so that we had breakfast here 3 times in a row! The chef must use some sort of magic to make the food so flavorful! A must visit for bread lovers!
Chris — Google review
Amazing brunch/lunch Best bacon waffles I’ve had- the brûlée banana & the crispy bacon were outstanding Partner’s eggs royale were also great! Waited around 10 minutes outside for a table but was well worth it. Would happy return next time we’re in the area.
M A — Google review
This is probably the local fav among all cafes in Windermere, coz that queue is all day long. Takes time to get in, but the food is top notch. Service is slow. The avocado toast with eggs and coffee were both good. But the banana bread and hash browns were the real stars, truly delightful. We had the cute seating by the window and enjoyed the views too. Takes time to get a table and to get the food, so go when you have time to spare!
Shefali S — Google review
Absolutely loved this place! The food was both delicious and creative. I highly recommend the Benedict eggs — the roasted vegetables on the side were perfectly crisp and full of flavor. Another must-try is the Homeground Sarnie — the pan-fried mashed potatoes inside were amazing! Paired with creamy avocado mash and a touch of plum sauce, it was rich yet perfectly balanced and not greasy at all. The environment was also clean and cozy, making the whole experience even better. I’d definitely come back again — highly recommended!
Shutong C — Google review
Me and my partner had decided to have lunch here after a long hike. They were incredibly busy so we had to wait for a table but our server was really clear and polite about this. After waiting the food and coffees came out quickly. We ordered a breakfast bap and the salmon toast. The salmon toast was incredible, tangy and rich. Particularly loved the smoked filleted salmon - incredible! And my partner highly rated his bap. We shared a blondie for dessert, which unfortunately was too sweet. Regardless nice atmosphere, nice service and incredible food. Highly reccomend.

Cafe
ChoccoBar Hot Chocolate House is a delightful haven located in the picturesque Windermere, perfect for those looking to indulge their sweet tooth. This modern café specializes in gourmet hot chocolates and an impressive selection of gluten-free waffles, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a delicious treat without worry. With dedicated waffle-makers and a variety of toppings available, ChoccoBar caters to all tastes while maintaining a cozy atmosphere ideal for unwinding after exploring the stunning lakes.
Freshly made waffles, you can tell too. Nice pot of tea for one, good brew but tiny cups for my big mit's. Will return for the cakes on display.

ChoccoBar is a sophisticated sanctuary in the ever popular Bowness-On-Windermere with an array of delicious treats on offer. We opted for the fondue which had all sorts of luscious fruits, waffles, churros and marshmallows to dip in the signature highest quality chocolate. The vanilla milkshake was extravagant but worth it in every way. Rhona and George were so lovely and helped us relax while offering world class service. Whenever life finds us in this beautiful part of the world again, we’ll definitely be back. We couldn’t recommend ChoccoBar more.
Mark T — Google review
We booked in advance for afternoon tea as part of our honeymoon at the ChoccoBar after trying their luxury hot chocolates which were delightful. It was beautifully presented on a three tier stand with all products sourced locally and hand made. The scones were fresh out the oven and were delicious. This was very reasonably priced at £50 and the service was unbelievable they went above and beyond and offered us takeaway boxes when we couldn't finish all the food. We've had afternoon teas in different parts of the UK such as Betty's tea house in Harrogate but it doesn't compare to this. This is the most lovely experience we've had ran by a family. We would definitely recommend!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Wonderful Late-Night Treat! We visited this lovely chocolate shop café late at night with our two young boys and our puppy, and it was such a warm and memorable experience. The boys had churros with rich chocolate dipping sauce — absolutely delicious! The owner, her son George, and their sweet dog Holly were so friendly and welcoming, instantly making us feel at home. It’s rare to find such genuine hospitality these days — they were amazing hosts and made our visit one of the highlights of our holiday in Bowness. The hot chocolate was outstanding (a real sample of perfection!), and the boys couldn’t have been happier tucking into their churros. A true gem in the Lake District — we’ll definitely be back!
Sarah W — Google review
I had the Belgian waffle with strawberries, chocolate and ice cream, it was absolutely delicious! I’m a celiac, so I was pleased to know the waffles are gluten free. The hot chocolate was probably the best I’ve tasted, seriously! Owner was lovely and welcoming! I’ll be a regular customer from now on.
Daniel T — Google review
Used to be absolutely fantastic, huge portions, REAL cream. In the last few years, the portion sizes have decreased massively, despite price increases. The waffles are barely bigger than a small plate. The toppings used to be a mountain on top of the waffles and that's what we were paying for which was well worth it. No longer serve freshly whipped cream which is disappointing. This place used to stand out due to the great toppings and the fresh cream with the scones and hot chocolates. Now very poor quality, nothing special at all. Such a let down when it used to be incredible, I would've recommended to anyone from 2022-2023.. now I would say to avoid. I would absolutely come back if the toppings improved and you still offered fresh cream, sorry guys, I was sad to make this review:(

We’ve just returned from our trip to Bowness-on-Windermere, and I can’t stop thinking about the heavenly hot chocolate from ChoccoBar! Honestly, it’s the best I’ve ever had, rich, silky, and absolutely indulgent. Each sip felt like pure luxury in a cup! The café itself is wonderful too, warm, cozy, and run by the loveliest, most welcoming owner who made us feel right at home. We were so obsessed with the hot chocolate that we couldn’t leave without buying two pouches to take home (and they smell divine!). If you’re in Windermere, do yourself a favour and stop by ChoccoBar, missing it would be a serious mistake for any chocolate lover! 🍫

Rhona was incredibly warm and chatty, making me feel right at home. And her hot chocolate was truly luxurious and rich - it alone is worth the visit! I highly recommend this place to everyone. I will definitely be back.

The Fizzy Tarté in Bowness-on-Windermere is a stylish and modern bar that offers a unique blend of a patisserie, champagne bar, and cafe. It's known for its exquisite afternoon tea options, including the indulgent Ultimate Afternoon Tea featuring sweet treats, finger sandwiches, locally made scones, and prosecco. The cocktail menu is impressive with expertly crafted drinks using fresh ingredients and fine spirits.
Lovely little place to eat. Service was excellent, cafe was nice and quite. Server was excellent. Great all round
Mrs M — Google review
Lovely cocktail bar located in Bowness, by lake Windermere. Lovely service and atmosphere. Good selection of cocktails, but pricey. Extra £5 for their signature version of classic cocktails, with not much difference to the classic version on the menu - ie: smoke in an old fashioned.
John ( — Google review
Lacking a savoury aspect, sandwiches small and skinny and bread dry. This was £68 for two, voucher bought last November 2024 when the afternoon tea looked indulgent now September 2025 and the owners obviously cutting back and using cheaper ingredients. Would not go back, would advise this is worth no more than £17 pp.
Jeanette H — Google review
Came here on Sunday night bought 3 lovely cocktails and decided we would come back in the next couple of days for the offer of 2 cocktails for £17.95. Big board outside the premises advertising the offer. Yet when we went in no offer!! Don't advertise an offer just to get people in, if it isn't on 😡😡😡
Jenny G — Google review
Called her for a drink. We sat outside but undercover. Patio heaters were on and blankets provided. A large choice of cocktails.
Jo — Google review
Friendly staff , lovely cakes and drinks. Called in as we passed, it was a great choice, made very welcome. Loved the friendly atmosphere.
Dave D — Google review
This was a great find. Love the Decor and atmosphere. The staff are really friendly, helpful and attentive. We stopped for a lunch and shared a board with some extra bread. It was the perfect amount and tasted fantastic with great presentation. The coffee was really good and the non alcoholic cocktail was spot on. Cannot fail this place.
Nick B — Google review
Visited for my birthday and left feeling underwhelmed. For a venue charging premium prices—£15 for a cocktail, no indication of volume—the service felt surprisingly indifferent. Staff were cool to the point of being dismissive, and the tall chairs were more punishment than perch. Although children are permitted in the outdoor area until 7pm, we were alas made to feel like second-class guests. A splash of overpriced liquid and a side of discomfort—unfortunately, that was the cherry on top of an experience I won’t be repeating.

Copper Pot is a charming and dog-friendly cafe located in Ambleside. The cafe offers a cozy atmosphere with a rustic stone wall, an open fire for winter warmth, and a lovely garden for outdoor dining in the summer. It's a great spot to enjoy breakfast, sandwiches, snacks, and cakes before heading out for a day of exploration. The cafe is known for its top-quality coffee sourced and roasted locally.
What a little Gem!!! Stopped her for some breakfast on the way home from camping and so glad we did, the food was delicious, all fresh, all free range. We also had to take one of their delicious cakes for the road, it would have been rude not to. Staff were very friendly, service amazingly quick, and they had Yorkshire Tea which makes them eligible for a Michelin star in my eyes lol Prices were very good as well, didn’t break the bank. Very cool decor, with cartoons projected on the wall as you ate. Highly recommended! Will definitely come back on my next visit.
Adam W — Google review
We tried the halloumi avocado toast, but it wasn’t really our favorite as the halloumi was fried and a bit heavy. On the other hand, the garlic truffle mushroom dish was absolutely delicious! We also ordered a pot of tea, which was nice and comforting. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the overall experience enjoyable

Lovely eatery, lovely staff and very tasty food. Only area I would suggest an improvement would the loo. Too small for comfort. But other than that would recommend for a flvourful lunch.
The S — Google review
Had I not checked on Google Maps, I'd have never even known this place was here. But after walking from Troutbeck to Ambleside, my mum and I had a look around a few shops, then decided to find somewhere that had gluten-free options. After browsing over a couple, we decided on the Copper Pot. When we arrived, we noticed a couple queueing for a table, which must be a good sign! It wasn't long at all, before we were seated and taking in our surroundings. The place is super cosy with the slate interior wall, the lighting, the music and general atmosphere, all which made for an amazing experience. There was a fab selection of cakes available, including chocolate stout cake, coconut, carrot and pineapple cake, a peanut butter cake and a few others, along with some gluten free options including courgette and avocado cake and orange and almond cake, both which looked amazing! The drinks we had were awesome, especially my hot chocolate whereby I could choose my preferred cocoa strength. My mum decided on the courgette and avocado cake (don't know it until you try it), while I chose the coconut, carrot and pineapple cake. Quite a combination of flavours, but they worked very well! I could certainly taste the coconut, along with hints of pineapple. Super moist and delicious from the first bite, right to the very last! I also loved the cutlery we got, which were spades as spoons! Altogether, this came to a little over £16 which I think is fantastic value for money. The service was also great, and the young lady who served us was very pleasant from start to finish. We will, without a doubt, certainly be coming back here when we next visit Ambleside. Well worth a visit!!!!

I ordered veg breakfast, waffles and biscoff brownie. I must say all of them were fab. I havent had a tastier veg breakfast in last 15 years in London. A must try if you are in Ambleside.

A lovely dining experience after my girlfriend and I had been out walking. We went for the Pastrami Ruban ciabatta and the Northern Fried Chicken & Bacon Stack. Both extremely tasty, fresh and packed with flavour. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, asking if either of us had any allergies prior to ordering and overall we had a lovely time. Would definitely recommend if you're looking to find a nice walk in restaurant after a hike in the hills.

Lucy's on a Plate is an iconic establishment in Ambleside, offering a unique dining experience. The restaurant features a charming conservatory and an inviting open fire, creating a cozy atmosphere. It also houses a cookery school that hosts family days, adding to its appeal. Known for its longevity in the area, Lucy's has been serving up delightful dishes since 1989.
Wow what a place. We stumbled across this place it looks tiny from the outside but actually quite spacious loads of tables.. Food was off the scale... Recommend the potted salmon.... To die for. Lamb Shank was delicious and to finish off with the raspberry crumble 💓
Dizzy E — Google review
Great night at lucy's on a plate. The menus are printed daily with a lovely daily notice on the front which i thought was a lovely touch. The food was delicious, great portion sizes and there were lots of gluten free options for my boyfriend. The steak was cooked great and was served with a heaping of garlic butter and peppercorn sauce (the garlic butter is insane) My only downside of the food was the chicken was slightly overcooked but the flavours of the dish and other components were great so balanced it out Staff were on the whole good, welcoming. Knocked a star off because the relaxed environment meant that staff often were talking a lot to the guests and it took a while to get our orders in.
Jade — Google review
We've ended up in Lucy's by absolute accident - didn't book anything and we liked the menu. Right away after entering the restaurant we've been greeted by extremely friendly, smiling staff and regardless lack of booking on Thursday's night we got a table. Interior has stunning feel to it, on every step you can see that this place has a heart of its own. We ordered lamb and fish mains - we loved them, probably the best of a kind that we ever had. After mains we couldn't stop ourselves from trying out desserts - we ended up ordering apple crumble tarte and sticky toffee pudding. Both were brilliant and served a role of a beautiful ending to a beautiful evening. I recommend this place to absolutely anyone who wants to make an additional memory from their trip to the Lakes. Thank you for this experience 💖

Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Just had one of the worst dining experiences of my life, for a 30th birthday celebration courtesy of Lucy’s on a plate Ambleside! I honestly don’t know where to begin with this, maybe the appalling manager, slow service, bland overpriced food, not sure really but here we go. So we email this place the previous evening to our booking enquiring about a reservation for 2 people, we heard nothing until WE contacted them around 3/4pm the following day to be told “oh yes im just on with the bookings now and was just about to call you”which I didn’t believe but that’s fine, on the phone I explained it was a special 30th birthday meal for my partner as they asked were we celebrating an occasion. We were looking forward to our meal and arrived slightly early about 6.20 for a 7pm table, we thought we could maybe have a drink if they had a bar or somewhere to wait for the table. We were shocked to see the manager fumbling around with his booking sheet to clearly see he didn’t have our names down, just to write us in in front of him, he then makes a joke saying “that would of been embarrassing”yeah it certainly would have been embarrassing so not a great start at all, we sit down to read the menu and notice some essay on the front talking about the guests and what they were celebrating, no mention of my partners 30th birthday just a half arsed after thought saying hello Andrew and Rhianne, as we were clearly forgotten about. After looking at the menu we decided to go for 2 pork belly starters £12 each and lamb shank £28 and lamb tagine £24, starters came out pretty quickly around 10-15 mins so great, unfortunately BLAND!! The apple puree could of been anything as there was no flavour at all, no sweetness to balance the dish just the flavour or pork and a little black pudding Bon Bon, BLAND! Then we wait for almost 1 hour, yes 1 hour for the main, asking the waiting staff how long, got told if it’s not here in 5 mins I’ll go and punch the chef, yes haha very funny but just get me my food I wasn’t up for jokes by this time, then the mains come, my lamb shank was dry had next to no sauce or should I say gravy at all, the mash was lukewarm the veg the same and very undercooked, I’m all for al dente but this just wasn’t and a piece of parsnip no bigger then your little finger, this place is a long way off fine dining! I asked for some more sauce and was brought a gravy boat of wishy washy gravy that they must use on every dish! Honestly very similar to a bisto gravy, where’s the lamb flavour or the reduced stock to coat the lamb shank, absolutely nothing! My partner said the lamb tagine was lukewarm again but after waiting an hour we were so hungry we just ate it, she said the cous cous was just bland and had nothing special about it, she said the cous cous from Sainsbury’s ‘food on the go’ was much nicer, why is this when we’re paying all this money? We also noticed there was no check back to see how we were enjoying the food as tbh they just weren’t bothered! When our plates were cleared(25 mins after we had finished) we were asked was everything ok, I said hmm yeah ok to which the waitress replied “ok yeah” great and takes the plates. This is where I would of informed the manager that someone was not very happy and suggest they go and speak to them! I was very reluctant to say anything because I’m aware I’m celebrating my partners 30th and didn’t want to make a scene, after such terrible service and food we just couldn’t order a dessert as we weren’t going to give these people my more of our money, we receive the bill at £115 for 2 starters 2 mains and 2 drinks each one of those was non alcoholic. Very overpriced for the quality you receive. Then to top the night off I go to pay, this is where the manger really shows his lack of experience, from me counting out the money to pay he never once asked “how was your meal” how did your partner enjoy her 30th birthday celebration” nothing! Didn’t even say enjoy your evening, honestly I recommend you research this place before going here as it’s beyond bad!
Andrew F — Google review
Outstanding dining experience from start to finish, and I highly recommend visiting Lucy’s. I booked a few months in advance as I wanted to ensure we had a reservation (we were there celebrating my son’s 30th birthday) and I received a confirmation email more or less immediately. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and showed to our table. I loved that there were several vegetarian options: not just pasta or burger dishes that vegetarians are usually offered. In fact I loved all of the effort that had gone into making the menu, not just the food - but the names of the dishes too! I also really loved (and appreciated) the little personal touches - like being mentioned in the menu. We really enjoyed our various meals, all the staff were lovely, and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Lucy’s. Highly recommended.
Caroline F — Google review
Had an absolutely lovely time here. We got seated straight away by Lucy at 8pm, after making a reservation a few days earlier. We ordered a 3 course meal, fish cake with salad and tartar sauce was delicious. Our mains were both yummy, I had vegetable Tagine (which I would enhance with some melted cheese) and my husband had classic Fish and Chips, you can’t go wrong with. For dessert, we chose the crème brûlée and the lime and ginger cheesecake, which were honestly divinee. Good job Kirsty! Service and attention to detail were on point especially as we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. Lucy congratulated him as we came in and they prepped a little balloon on our table 🥹 They also have a personalised menu introducing all the customers for that day! which I thought was very cute and innovative. All in all, very positive experience would highly recommend!

Came for the early evening menu. £26 for 2 courses and you got given good size portions. We had the fish cake, lamb tagine and beef shin which was all really good
Anisha — Google review
We visited Lucy's on a plate on a Sunday for the roast (which was very good) table booked for 5:15pm, we checked the online menu before visiting and saw there was a deal for 3 courses, when we arrived we were given a menu with no starters on, which was fine for us as we just wanted mains and dessert anyway, but for those who would want starters it looks like you would have to ask for this. The staff were by no means rude and were pleasant enough but they weren't exactly friendly or generally welcoming. There was no atmosphere to start with but as more customers entered and chatter filled the room it didn't feel as awkward, could have done with some background music whilst the restaurant filled up. Regardless of this you go to the restaurant for the food which was amazing and well worth the visit! Portion sizes will not leave you feeling hungry, and the quality of the food was great. Food generally came out in good time also, the restaurant was full by the time we left which is always a good sign. Over all we had a good experience but coming from a hospitality background the staff could just be a bit more enthusiastic to be there and create a better atmosphere, perhaps we caught them on a bad day though. Wishing Lucy and the team all the best.

The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery is a family-run store with delicious baked goods that are popular for takeaways or to enjoy inside the cozy cafe. They have a wide selection of drinks, soups, sandwiches, pies and much more. They offer vegan and vegetarian options for breakfast and lunch as well as a nice covered outside area for warmer days.
We visited here as we were passing through Ambleside and we were so pleased we did! The service was incredible - such friendly, happy staff who are willing to take their time with you. The apple pie was always going to be good but wow, it was AMAZING! I wish I’d had room for a couple more! We also had a brunch butty and a cheese and potato pasty - both of which were delicious! Plenty of seating and the queue moves quickly. Toilets are so clean too - always a big plus!

We had a fabulous experience at The Apple Pie Cafe. Firstly, we bought a portion of Bath Bun & a large custard pie from the bakery. Then we went to the cafe , where the staff were friendly & engaging. The food they brought out was faultless. The pastry on the pasty just melted & the ingredients tasted moist & tender. The salads were fresh, crisp & juicy. The apple pie sundae was excellent, with fresh cream, mixed spice & sultanas. We really enjoyed our experience there.

We were six of us from India. Apple pie is a very nice place with good delicious wraps, sandwiches. Apple pie was very very tasty especially the orange flavour. The hit chocolate was very nice. Bonabe, max and.kartin and one more girl helped us find the perfect menu. Good ambience. I would want to.come back to the lake district again to.enjoy apple pie once again my lifetime.

Absolutely chucked it down so we were looking for a bit of shelter. There was a bit of a queue outside this place so we thought it must be good, we only had to wait a few minutes and were then offered a table outside under one of the heated pergolas. It was a great atmosphere despite the rain and the lunch and service were top class. We took some treats away with us and there was loads to choose from Plumbread to Rocky Road. Definitely worth a visit!

After seeing the reviews we mainly went for the bakery or we thought we were gonna go for the bakery but on arrival we found out they also got a restaurant. The menu was really good and they had a lot of options so we ended up ordering quite a few things of menu . As plenty of review suggested that we should go for the apple pie which we did and to say the least we weren’t disappointed. It was really nice chill atmosphere and the service was really good. Food was on the table on time. We didn’t have to wait that long. The orange juice was fresh and very tasty, better than your shop bought. I went for the spiced apple pie with custard and it was banging !!

Stopped for breakfast. The vegan breakfast option(s?l were limited, but what I had, the masala beans was excellent. It was nice to find a vegan dish that didn't feel like an afterthought (Eg, No dodgy vegan sausages!). Perfect breakfast setting me up for the days walk. Thank you.

Had a nice lunch and drink here! Very nice ciabatta, sausage roll and special orange hot choc! Plenty of seating. Toilet facilities are ok except they are up a thin flight of stairs which isn't very accessible

Great bakery selling delicious cakes and pastries etc, so I had to buy a few items including a plain apple pie (they also do spiced). You can buy slices if you prefer. We then went to the cafe which is next door and had lunch. Great selection of baguettes, wraps etc. I finished it off with a generous slice of apple pie with custard (ice cream and cream options also available). Friendly staff, clean tables, prompt service. Definitely worth a visit. Large car park nearby.

The calming bistro-style ambiance, complete with outdoor seating areas, allows guests to enjoy their meal while surrounded by the natural beauty of rolling fells.
Had an absolutely gorgeous lunch with my parents—it was my mom’s birthday. Our server was the cool Spanish guy, he was extremely considerate! Food was awesome and very reasonably priced considering its prime location in the town.

We had a fantastic dining experience at Porto Restaurant! The food was excellent across the board—flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. The mixed kofta stood out with its perfectly seasoned meat and juicy texture. The risotto was rich and creamy, cooked to perfection, and the grilled chicken sandwich was a satisfying choice—light yet full of flavor. What truly made the visit special was discovering their impressive kids’ menu. It was a nice surprise to find such a well-thought-out selection for little ones, offering both variety and quality—a rare find in many restaurants. Overall, a great spot for families or anyone looking to enjoy delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Great restaurant, I booked a table for my partners birthday. They decorated the table with a few birthday bits which was lovely of them and they didn’t have to do! The food just added to the experience, the belly pork and Cumbrian chicken was absolutely delightful. To finish things off, the brownie and ice cream was superb. Would recommend here to anyone visiting the Lakes! Thank you guys!

Tiny place, very cosy, nice atmosphere, staff are very helpful and kind, very professional. The food is unbelievable. It is exactly what it presents itself to be, traditional dishes with a modern twist. We had a beef profiterole, scallops and as mains chicken supreme and beef cheek. It was fantastic. All the components in the dishes were complimenting each other, the horseradish sauce was brilliant. We also had a nice bottle if Italian primitivo, great wine selection overall. Its a bit pricey but totally worth it. Also what really pleased me is that service charge was not added onto the bill. You were not expected to pay it, which obviously makes you happy to add it on considering the quality of the service. One thing that stood out to me were these tiny towels in the bathroom. Gave the place a bit of a fancy kick. Definitely would recommend.

What an amazing place. Ignore josh farrer, he must have given a bad review to get a free meal. Clown. The place is not like a working mens club at all. It is really nice inside. The food however we had today was exceptional. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and fell off the bone. The flavour of the jus was so good. The chips are mental, so big but stunning. The chicken tagliatelle was oustanding too. Definitely recommend this place

Wow, the food, ambiance and drinks were delicious. The cheese souffle starter was exquisite. I couldn't get enough of it. For mains, I had the pork, which was delicious and the other had steaks and all enjoyed them. The wines were excellent, as was the after dinner port. The desserts were also a hit with us all. Excellent atmosphere and our server was excellent and friendly. Highly recommend.

Came for Sunday roast dinner. It was very delicious!! They have local beers too that we enjoyed trying and were very tasty. The atmosphere is nice being in a historic building. The service is good. I am happy that I made a reservation, as I heard them turning people away. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant!

A restaurant name that immediately grabs attention—and the experience lived up to it! The starters and main course were absolutely delightful, leaving a lasting impression. While the dessert didn’t quite match the high expectations set by the earlier courses, the impeccable service made up for it. Our server, who worked Wednesday evening, was attentive and thoughtful, offering recommendations that truly enhanced our meal. A great dining experience overall!

In the heart of Ambleside, a historical building, with an interesting oak wall and beautiful features. We had the gin of the month which was good. The prawns and chorizo were flavoursome (highly recommended!) as was the burger. The lamb steak, on the other hand, was tough. The service was worthy of a 5 star. And a very interesting story behind the name of the restaurant: The priest hole.

I popped in solo on a dog walk whilst staying in Rydal Lovely staff and had a hot beef sandwich which was really lovely (proper thick gravy in a side dish and a good fresh salad and slaw alongside) as was a local bottled pale ale (always a risk for me to try and unknown pale! I didn't tell the staff I own a brewery ha) Really, astounding value also. Would have tipped but didn't have any cash on me. I will try and pop back! Marks down for atmosphere is simply as I wasn't allowed inside with the dog. Clearly signed and I made my choice to eat here based on the hospitality received regardless. Still, would be lovely (if not a good hygiene issue with doors to kitchen etc, I do appreciate some layouts make this impossible) if a small amount of bar space inside could be dog friendly. But forget that. Great food great service. Really enjoyed my lunch here 🍺

Stumbled across this place out of chance with my family and we absolutely loved it and will return each time we’re in Ambleside for sure. The speed of service wasn’t super quick, but you can really see and feel every item is made totally fresh and with great skill and attention. The food really was fabulous, both mains and desserts - truly excellent. Would be nice to have a draught beer available but some nice bottled choices at least that weren’t overly priced. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re in town!

I think the high ratings noted come from the choice of beverages available and the homely feel inside. This is because the food on offer itself is distinctly average. The much vaunted steak & ale pie seemed to have been sitting around for a while. Thankfully, the mushroom risotto was a hit. Also, the beer was bottled but came flat? Would be nice on a winters night but wouldn't return to eat.

The pub provides a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu featuring freshly made dishes like fish & chips, Sunday roasts, pies of the day, and plant-based burgers. I recently visited The Flying Pig restaurant in Windermere and tried their pork knuckle menu. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly cooked—the meat was tender and juicy, with a crisp exterior that gave it just the right texture. The portion size was generous, making it a satisfying choice for anyone with an appetite. The service matched the quality of the food. Staff were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was served promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which added to the overall positive dining experience. Overall, The Flying Pig restaurant is a place I would happily recommend, especially for anyone who enjoys classic, well-prepared pork dishes served with a smile.

Decent food portions. Not particularly special. Notable is the pork trotter which is sizeable and fairly good. Service is average, unintrusive but perfunctory. Environment is warm and kid and dog friendly.

We ate here twice during our week in Bowness, and popped in for a drink every day. The pub is absolutely exceptional! Food is great, service is excellent and the atmosphere is so friendly. We took our dog with us everytime and we were made to feel so welcome. They have a special dog menu and station for biscuits, water and bowls which is some of the best facilities we’ve ever seen. Arthur E — Google review
This pubs website states that the british food is usually described as bland and not good to compared to other countries (which they then said they changed that). however they made perfectly true in the food we were served! took about 5 mins to speak to someone about getting a table and the staff themselves were nice however the food was terrible. we had a roast dinner each (trio meats) and cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets, food took about 20mins to come out which wasn’t terrible timing i suppose, however i would’ve waited longer if that meant i got something hot! the gravy was like water and had no taste and cold, the meats themselves were bland and cold. potatoes were fluffy however not crispy and had no flavour except soil, unsure if you see the theme but they were cold. the veg was good, once again cold. cauli cheese was hot!! and flavourless… yorkshire tasted store bought and not fresh (cold!!!). pigs in blankets were good but not sure how you could mess that up, they were warm! took about 30mins to get a servers attention, i’m not one to complain but it was a disgrace. so i complained lightly to the server ( who was new and was not trained enough to be serving alone, i’ve worked in pubs i know how this should work.) and he was somewhat apologetic, then the manager came over shortly and he was nice about everything and gave us a 10% discount (i did not ask for any discount this was at his own doing) and offered us free deserts for when we next come, which we won’t be.. atmosphere was nice however nice fire and building, cleanliness was good. however does not make up for the disgrace of a roast and service! we left not happy and still hungry. should’ve got ice cream for desert and the running theme was cold through our visit.

I’ve eaten here a fair few times now. The food here is always nice with good portion sizes. This time I had the new pork knuckle which was huge. Had this dish in Prague recently and this was just as tasty. Traditional pub with nice selection of real ales. Recommended.

Absolutely shocking. Ordered the half chicken and the skin on the chicken was burnt. The meat beneath it was dry and over cooked. Didn’t even offer a discount or for it to be taken off the bill. I tried to eat it all but just wasn’t edible! I don’t complain much at ever. Their response was they had a new cook helping the chef. Well that’s not my problem! You can’t serve food like this!!! If they had offered a discount or taken it off the bill I would not be writing this review. They didn’t even try rectifying the situation.
Kate P — Google review
I was very disappointed in this restaurant which looked so lovely from the website and from the outside. We deliberately chose this place because of the range of options available, since some of our party have certain dietary requirements. To find out that the first menu item they ordered had run out is one thing. That the second had also run out is annoying. We weren’t told of this before ordering at all. Then to find out that of the two burgers we’d ordered, only one could actually be delivered was the last straw. Funnily enough, the one that they did choose to provide was the more expensive of the two. This obviously left a bad taste and I was cross enough that I no longer enjoyed the meal I had been so looking forward to. No great surprise, though, as the quality of the food we were provided with was average at best. We didn’t stay for desert, even though we had initially wanted to, because we didn’t want to spend more of our money here, we were no longer in the mood, and I very much expected to find out that they didn’t have what we wanted anyway. The excuse given was that it was late in the day, which is true, however, this would have been one thing if we were walk-ins, but we had reserved a table days in advance. The least you can expect of a halfway decent restaurant is that they’re actually able to serve you the food you’ve come for, especially if they’ll happily take your booking without mentioning that they might run out.

I visited twice. The first was to sit down somewhere to read my book and this place was very welcoming! The second time I went back with my partner for breakfast. We ordered the Urban Hash and the Avocado toast. It was overall very good but I absolutely loved the Urban Hash! So flavourful and hits every spot! It was a very satisfying breakfast for me.

Great spot for brunch🥓🍳 Everything we ordered was delicious, except for the Shakshuka (too heavy on cumin seasoning) & Egg Royale (slightly too salty for our liking) Our orders included: 1. I have walked past this venue hundreds of times, and it usually looks very nice. My partner and I decided to give it a whirl as we couldn’t be bothered cooking breakfast at home and I’ve got to say I was very disappointed. The female who served us, wearing a pink jumper, lacked basic customer service skills and appeared to not be interested in us. When we arrived she just pointed at a table with no welcoming greeting. She didn’t smile and appeared to be very rude. The eggs Benedict was of poor quality and very expensive for what it was, a very small slice of toast in the middle of a big plate. The salt shaker broke whilst trying to use it. I ordered a cappuccino and was just served a wet milky mess of a drink. I will not be returning.
Aaron P — Google review
Don’t be fooled by the first glance at the picture with this review! Look closely and you’ll see that my “smashed avocado on toast” is actually a prettily dressed slice of white bread that hasn’t been toasted and guacamole from a bottle! My sister’s pancakes were similarly prepared in a factory who knows how long ago! The servers attitude about it was far from apologetic and while he did remove the item from the bill he made a big deal about 15p that was left after we split the bill!
Kim P — Google review
One of the best Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon I've had in quite a while. The Avocado on toast was also delicious and the coffee was very smooth. Highly recommend. Still as good, 3 years later.
Paul J — Google review
Tried other places and thought this place looked nice and cozy. Ordered a large and a small breakfast with tea and a flat white coffee. The coffee was a cappuccino not a flat white. When the breakfasts arrived they looked nice. The eggs were placed on top of the toast which made it greasy and I wasn’t able to eat it. The eggs had pepper on them which is a personal choice to have on or not. The bacon was hard dry and broke rather than cut and was salty. The sausage was very peppery. Got more juice than beans. The salt grinder was throwing salt out of the top as much as the bottom. The small breakfast had black pudding and a hash brown on which wasn’t on the menu. Hash brown was ok but wouldn’t have had the black pudding. All in all not the greatest of experiences and at the price paid made it worse. I don’t mind paying a higher cost if the overall quality is worth it. We won’t be returning.

We arrived on a rainy evening and so grateful to be able to find this place for dinner without booking. Throughly enjoyed all the starters that we ordered. Great flavours, fresh and tasty. We had their Urban Fried Chicken Burger for main which was a bit dry and the seasoning was not as great as their starters. Staffs were all very friendly and attentive. Overall, it’s a nice dining experience!

Firstly, Nathan - absolute LEGEND! A very attentive, polite waiter, a really great lad. We really enjoyed out trip to the lakes and places like Urban Food House helped massively. We have a sausage dog and many places around Windermere surprisingly don't let you in with a dog. At Urban Food our dog was made to feel welcome, Nathan found us a table with space and then got the dog a water bowl, happy days. We were by the kitchen, really happy bunch, I preferred their music to the restaurant music, was great to feed off of their happiness, loved it. One day we came in for mussels and we were too early, as a one off they discussed with the chef and served the Mrs mussels and they were incredible. Good food, good service, good beer = good times. Amazing food to takeaway! I went for the Burrito and it was substantial, tasty and surprisingly clean to eat on a bench in public. Definitely recommend the food counter. The shop has some delicious looking treats too!

The Giggling Goose Cafe is a charming family-friendly spot located in North Rd, Ambleside LA22 9DT, UK. Situated by the Old Water Mill and overlooking the river, it offers a delightful setting for visitors to enjoy freshly prepared food and drinks. The cafe's menu features a variety of options including sandwiches, salads, pastries, as well as hot and cold beverages like coffee and tea.
The cake was great and the staff are happy and pleasant. The cafe is located centrally within Ambleside. There are steps to all entrances, however if you head in from the top of the hill there are only 2 steps as opposed to 2 full flights of stairs in from the high street. Very nice medium flowing stream by the outside seating.

Lovely helpful staff who showed us to a table in the large outside garden. Service was leisurely but they were busy and we were not in a hurry. Very good sandwiches with a great side salad in a little bowl and tasty coleslaw. Good value for a tourist hot spot. Felt very safe and a nice place to relax after a long walk.

Worth a visit for cream tea when in Ambleside. It's right next to a bubbling brook, and has a water mill (it was being repaired when I visited). Service was friendly and quick, and there's a great selection of cakes. It's got a casual but cosy atmosphere, and feels like a really relaxed place. It has Destin outside for the warmer months too.
Christian P — Google review
A lovely little café, there were plenty of seating options (outside in the shade or not, or a quieter corner table inside or larger low table. Staff were excellent and very welcoming, would have loved to have had a cake as they looked fantastic but we were still full from our lunches earlier! They also have a dog wall of fame, absolutely wonderful (see photo!)

Really enjoyed my time in the Giggling Goose Cafe. Lovely food and very friendly staff. Fantastic location by the river makes the place even more attractive. It is a shame about very run down outdoor sitting area and overgrown, weedy garden.

I loved the location of the cafe, it was great to hear the stream of water and sip on coffee. The staff is very friendly and the food is good too. It’s a nice place with a view to stretch your legs and relax

AVOID! I have never experienced such rude staff! Walked up the path and stood outside of the café door waiting for my wife before heading in for coffee and a snack when this member of staff marched up to me and demanded rudely, "can I help you?". I answered no thanks, and that i was waiting for my wife. His reply startled me........"well you can't wait here, it's private property!". I looked around and saw there was nobody else there. I simply pointed out that they might want to alter their approach as people clearly had to pass over their "private property" in order to get to the café door. The fact the everyone else was avoiding it told me I wasn't the first to encounter such rudeness....and I can see there are other reviews stating such. TOP TIP: go to Apple Pie Café & Bakery....far, far better! Great staff, great coffee, great freshly made snacks & pies!

Paid £6.25 for a cold "vegan sausage" sandwich, made with the kind of sausage that is just vegetable and mush. The bread disintegrated on contact. One of the worst cafés i have been to in a long time.

Cafe
Mathilde’s Café, located inside the Heaton Cooper Gallery in Grasmere, has a Scandinavian vibe that reflects its namesake, Mathilde, the Norwegian wife of Alfred Heaton Cooper. The café offers a menu with a Scandinavian touch, featuring dishes like poached egg with Jarlsberg or sautéed mushrooms on sourdough and brioche bun hot dog with pickled onions and Finnish mustard. One of the highlights is the smoked trout dish.
Beautiful venue, excellent service and incredible food and coffee. High chairs available for little ones too. Was blown away by this place, its breakfast dishes and the high quality coffee. The setting is sublime, with stunning artwork present throughout and merged with the gallery next door. Grasmere is naturally great and beautiful, but places like this make it even better and we can’t wait to come back.

Amazing Scandinavian brunch spot! Loved the cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and great vibes. There’s an art gallery and art supply shop right next door, which made the whole experience feel extra creative.

Wow! Such a great place! Ideally located, with a great menu and an art corner. One of the staff was not really nice and unfortunately she was at the one taking order but the rest of the staff was lovely. Food and drinks were tasty. Definitely recommend the place

BEST LUNCH IVE EVER HAD. I cannot recommend this place enough. Incredible cool gallery-esque space with delicous balanced dishes. The mackerel and the Swedish meatballs were to die for. Additionally we had the best cake either me or my partner have ever had...the dream kaka. You must get it. I only wish it was local to me and this is a must try if you're in the area.

Really beautiful place, we sat in the gallery area on the shared table. Quite an experience! Sweet treat choices were fantastic and the coffee was delicious!
Octavia H — Google review
This was my first visit to Mathildes in Grasmere. We placed our order for one coffee and tea and two bacon sandwiches. Our drinks arrived very quickly, but I had cause to question why the tea pot was only half full therefore requested a pot of hot water. At this stage I requested an update on our sandwiches and was told they would be with us very soon. Some twenty minutes later and after requesting further updates our sandwiches finally arrived. After raising the level of service and delay with the duty manager I was advised that I should have asked for my drinks and sandwiches to be served together. With regards to the time taken to serve the bacon sandwiches the manager advised that a 20 minute wait is normal. To prevent any misunderstanding I see no reason why the counter staff should not ask the customer at the time of ordering if the drinks and meal are to be served together or separately. To supply a tea pot half full and no additional pot of hot water is unacceptable especially when this simple meal had a high price tag of £25. This establishment clearly puts profit first over customer satisfaction. Perhaps the front of house manager would also benefit from from further hospitality training. There are many good businesses in Grasmere who are happy to go the extra mile to achieve total customer satisfaction and secure repeat business. I hope the owner addresses the issues I have raised above.

A great cafe attached to an art gallery and shop. The food is really excellent and the facilities are great too. Very busy with people popping in after a walk or visiting the gallery. The service is a fraction slow due to the high popularity but the cake selection alone would be enough to bring me back!

Windermere Jetty Museum - Stories of boats and steam is a delightful destination located on the serene shores of Lake Windermere, right in the heart of England's stunning Lake District. This museum is a treasure trove for those passionate about maritime history, showcasing an impressive array of meticulously restored boats and steam launches. Visitors can dive into the fascinating narrative of boating and boatbuilding that has shaped this region over the years.
Neither my wife nor I are especially interested in boats, but what an excellent museum! We'd seen articles and items about it, and thought we really ought to visit it, and we're very glad we did. The setting of course is unbeatable, especially in glorious weather, but the way the museum is laid out, the information panels, the consistent graphics and design - all top quality. And the cafe is really good as well. We didn't do a boat trip (lack of time, and we'd not long since done Derwent Water), but I suspect we'll do that next time we visit (given that the tickets are valid for a year). Hats off to Lakeland Arts - and after lunch we headed off to their other venue, Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, and that was superb as well.
Mike C — Google review
Lovely place. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We hadn't booked anything in advance, walked in and was 5 minutes before the next sailing. We managed to get on it and we were the only 2 on the boat other than the staff. The staff on the boat Asher and Paul were fabulous making it a really special time. The cafe was lovely for a cup if tea and a slice of cake to warm back up with afterwards. We didn't get chance to look around the museum as it was close to closing time, however the ticket price was very reasonable with them saying the ticket lasts for a year too. I would very highly recommend!

I was surprised by the architecture of the Jetty Museum. You rarely see such modern architecture in a small village like this anywhere in the UK. I really enjoyed the combination of the landscape, architecture, view, and the café’s quality. I found this café by chance, and it became one of my most wonderful experiences during this short trip to Windermere.
Niloufar G — Google review
Nice museum experience, it’s small but well made. The boats are well taken care of, there’s a couple floating in their garage that are quite cute. They have one steam boat that you can book an experience with that’s £475. Inside the museum there are clothes from the old era (I think the 1930’s) that you can try out and take pictures, for men and women. There’s a playground for kids so expect to see families.

One of the best museums I've seen, really worth the while visiting. Apart from the actual exhibition pieces, we loved the modern architecture, the workshop, the caffè with kitchen with great views on the lake. Large carpark.
Ramona R — Google review
We are regular visitors here, great little place. Normally you get your car park fee returned at the cafe after buying lunch. Not over summer however... its £5 for 2 hours which is just ripping their visitors off. So today with the car parking fee on top of food we just had coffee ! Very limited lunch menu these days but you can always grab a cake. Breakfast finishes at 11.30 and then half an hour wait with no food available. It just seemed today that this place is run to suit the staff more than the visitors. Still a ni e place to visit though.
Chris — Google review
Interesting museum about the boating history of Windermere. Didn't know they held water speed record runs on the lake. There's a puzzle to solve, which is great for kids. But you have to pay attention.

Just stopped here for breakfast this morning and it was stunning. The staff are so nice and kind and the cafe is very dog friendly water and lovely dog treats given. Do give this cafe a go!!! We were dithering outside because it looked a bit dark, but so glad we went in! Tasty homemade chips and hash brown (you know how some hash browns are just nooot good). Very nice cheese and sausage Toastie and chorizo baguette!

My wife & I have tried most other 'fancy' breakfast eateries in Bowness. Now, we only ever breakfast at the Alpine (monthly, for several years, tripping up from Morecambe). Best breakfast. Great cafe, the food was surprisingly tasty. We did not have to wait for a table, it was busy. Polite staff and attentive, as it was busy it took a little time to attract attention. We tried several items and all were very good. Except for the kids fish fingers. Looked like Birds Eye. The view is stunning. So would visit again.

I’ve recently visited The Force & Terrace near Ambleside a number of times whilst staying in the area. The cafe was very good and provided quality food in an excellent position. Its vegetarian options were superb and not just halfheartedly added to the menu. As a vegetarian I found it an excellent place to eat and its positioning and views over Windermere only further added to the experience. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. As such based on my experience I would definitely recommend The Force & Terrace as somewhere to eat especially when out walking in the Ambleside area.

We stopped here on a Saturday evening and had very rude service from one of the waitresses. Upon arrival we made a mistake and went to walk straight onto the terrace. The pizza chef explained we needed to go inside to be seated, which we apologised for and did as he said. Once in, the rude waitress told us they weren't serving anymore. We arrived at 19:48 (I checked the timestamp on my photos) and the restaurant states they shut at 21:00. We went to leave, but decided to double check if we could just have a drink on the terrace. We went back in and spoke to another waitress who was a lot friendly who said of course, and we could also have cake if we wanted. We declined the cake and just asked for drinks. Another table full of people had also just been seated on the next table to us. They all ordered food. We therefore asked the friendly waitress again if there was any chance of just 1 pizza to share, but were told this wouldn't be possible as they had run out of dough. We therefore just stayed an had a couple of drinks. Around 20:30 we noticed a marked increase in the volume of the music inside the restaurant and noticed the staff beginning to clear down and close up. The friendly waitress came over to ask if we wanted any last orders, and jokingly apologised about the music saying some of the other staff were happy it was closing time and so wanted the louder music whilst they closed up. We weren't really bothered about the music, but did think it interesting that it was more about the staff than the customers at this point, despite the restaurant still being open for another 30 minutes. We were the last people left around 20:45, so finished up our drinks, went into pay, and as we left we spotted the pizza chef taking a pizza out of the oven. So it seems they had run out of pizzas for the customers, but not the staff. This restaurant is ideally situated with stunning views. I'd recommend coming here to see that. And it's obvious from other reviews that this place is well loved and does excellent food. Just ensure you book before going, especially for a Saturday evening. And also hope that you don't get the rude waitress, she wasn't pleasant at all. We are happy we popped in for a drink and to see the views, but we wouldn't go back due to the way we were treated.

An absolute treat! Our food was amazing, and all the dishes coming out from the kitchen looked and smelled really good. There is a free parking for guests and you need to register your number plates at the entrance of the cafe. Very friendly staff (always helps!). Excellent little cafe, came all the way from the states just to visit. One of my mates said it was the best coffee in the UK so I hopped a plane to sort him out. I’m afraid to report that after a heated debate on what to order I picked the cheese and bacon on toast. In case the photos don’t do it justice it’s several pieces of bacon on heavenly cheesy bread. Service can be a little slow during busy times but still very friendly. Prices are good but the drinks we had were not as good as hoped. The food being served looked and smelled good but I only had a flapjack so cannot attest to the real food. The flapjack was heavy but decent enough.

A cosy place with a hint of Swiss chalet theme. Their forte is obviously hot drinks with a huge selection of teas and coffees. The teas are all loose, whole leaf served in a cafetiere-type jug. There is a good choice of sandwiches and cakes but few options for hot food - mainly soup, toast, crumpets and baked potatoes. Orders are placed at the counter then bought to the table. Service was welcoming, drinks arrived in good time and there was a moderate delay in preparing and serving the food. Prices are reasonable and the place is kept clean.

Cafe Italia is a bustling and relaxed cafe situated in a prime location, offering a delightful selection of Italian sandwiches, pastas, and salads. The venue is known for its inviting patio seating and friendly atmosphere. Guests can savor popular dishes such as the prawn linguine with proper spicy seasoning that adds an extra burst of flavor. The restaurant's cheese pizza also receives high praise. While it doesn't take reservations, the fast and welcoming service by the staff makes it well worth the visit.
Amazing and welcoming service, even when it's busy. We were sat on the balcony on second floor, which was heated and shielded from the rain - what a treat! We shared a pizza for lunch, very delicious and came fairly quickly. The house white wine was tasty too, and overall had a fab time.

We liked every plate except the desert, carrot cake and classic cheesecake, they didn’t taste as they should, for £8 each you expect more. The table size is minisculous! We were three and they put us in one, way not enough! The server was very busy and we had to ask for water every glass instead of getting a jar (because they don’t put it on the table since they don’t fit with the plates) The taste of the pasta and the pizza and the chicken were good! The sweet sauce that came with the chicken doesn’t belong there in our opinion. So overall, food was good, just beware of the desert, and the lack of space, and of water (small glasses with no jar on the table)

While exploring the top part of Windermere, we decided to stop off at Cafe Italia for a coffee and a piece of cake. The gentleman at the door, was super polite and seated us straight away on one of the tables outside, with the weather being nice. We ordered two cappuccinos and a flat white, along with three slices of gluten free vanilla cheesecake. The coffees were great and the presentation of our cheesecakes was fab! However, I was a little taken aback by the bill when heading inside to pay, coming to almost £40! Personally I feel almost £40 for three coffees and three slices of cheesecake (which were store bought and not homemade) is a bit extortionate. I also wasn't aware (or informed when paying the bill), of the 10% service charge). I could maybe understand if this was added for a party of more than five, but for three people? A bit naughty really. We didn't look at the menu so if this was stated there, then I stand corrected. I'm not sure we'd return again though, as there are other cafes, where the bill isn't almost £40 just for coffee and cake (and where there's no service charge added).

Doi Intanon is a stylish Thai restaurant located in the old Market Hall, offering classic Thai cuisine with a variety of vegetarian options. The family-run establishment has been serving authentic Thai flavors in Ambleside for over 20 years. Their menu features popular dishes such as pad Thai, green and red curries, fish cakes, tom yum soup, and salads, along with daily specials.
Really great food, wonderful service and beautiful building (an old market house). We had the tempura prawns and chicken satay to start - both delicious. Our mains were made to order (we wanted beef instead of chicken or prawns which was the option for one of the stir frys) and they were happy to accommodate. Lovely staff, felt very welcomed - we enjoyed our first meal out in Ambleside.

We had a wonderful dinner during our stay in Grasmere. We’re big fans of Thai food, and this restaurant is definitely one of the best we’ve been to. Our table was on the second floor, and I highly recommend requesting a table there. The atmosphere was fantastic—high ceilings and traditional Thai decorations. The food was delicious and varied. We started with the combination starter and the Yum Toui vegetarian salad, both of which were great. The main dishes were equally impressive, with both curry and stir-fried options to choose from. And the desserts were simply divine. The service was impeccable—quick, polite, and attentive. The prices seemed reasonable, considering the quality of the food and service. We felt we got our money’s worth.

Doi Intanon in Ambleside stands out as one of the Lakes’ top spots for authentic Thai cuisine—a favourite both with regular visitors and lucky newcomers. The menu is bursting with classics: fragrant curries, aromatic stir-fries, and sizzling dishes delivered straight from the open kitchen. Each dish is crafted with great attention to detail, using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations. Portions are generous, and the variety accommodates all tastes, from adventurous spice lovers to vegans seeking creative, plant-based dishes. The atmosphere is bright, welcoming, and transports you to Thailand with its authentic décor and bustling energy. Service is consistently warm, knowledgeable, and friendly, with staff happy to recommend house specialities or cater to allergies and dietary needs. The combination starter and house-made Thai sweet chilli sauce are standouts, while the Weeping Tiger and Thai salads frequently win praise for bold flavour. For a special treat, save room for dessert—diners rave about the tempting sweets! The restaurant is popular, so advanced bookings are recommended. Whether you dine in or opt for takeaway, Doi Intanon delivers soul-soothing food and memorable hospitality. It’s a must-visit destination in Ambleside for anyone craving real Thai flavours at fair prices, served up with heart and care.

I would definitely recommend booking in advance it gets really busy. Staff were friendly and helpful. Drinks were a bit pricey. And I definitely didn't like the 10% service charge.

Update for 2025: Excellent food on our return visit. Curries were tasty with good depth of flavour. An improvement to food and service compared to 3 years ago and well worth a visit. ----- Starters were the best, sweetcorn fritters tasty and spring rolls were good. Red curry was tasty but had to hunt for the chicken. Service was prompt but haphazard with the wrong wine delivered and prawn crackers forgotten. Good flavours but could do better.

Sheila's Cottage is a charming stone cottage in the village of The Slack, Ambleside. It serves locally-sourced traditional comfort cuisine and offers an array of wines in a cosy, licensed restaurant setting. The cottage provides a tranquil rural setting with beautiful views and is fully equipped for a comfortable stay. In addition to its delightful dining experience, it's also dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for visitors exploring the Lake District.
THE SERVICE!!! Never laughed so hard. The food is also very good, had the tagine and the pie and finished it off with the best sticky toffee pudding. A nice and cosy spot after a day climbing the wainwrights.

Stopped in for lunch. The food was good. The side salad with beets and the thick cut chips were especially delish. The thick cut chips I had here have been the best I have had since I have been in England.

Sheila’s Cottage in Ambleside was a lovely last-minute find, offering a cosy atmosphere and friendly, welcoming service. The pork belly starter was both tasty and generously portioned, while the lamb chump that followed was cooked nicely and paired with well-prepared vegetables. I would have preferred a sauce with a bit more depth and thickness to really bring the dish together. It is a little on the pricier side, but given the quality of the food and the warm setting, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

We were glad to see this place was dog friendly and we tried it out. The menu looked a few pounds more than other places & the wine too : the latter proving a disappointment and certainly for £29.50! I had the pie & I gather they buy them in put some gravy round it, a few carrots / I chose chips over mash. But, £20 a tad steep. The booking process on line was a faff & Credit Card details taken! We couldn’t be bothered checking out the over priced puds : again cheaper elsewhere! Slightly sour faced waitress when we said no to puds! Then in asking for the bill, we were told they automatically added a 10% tip! I never like this as we may have wanted to give more! We were told they could take it off : but, could you imagine the face! On balance out of all the restaurants we have eaten tried in Ambleside this delivered poor value for monies spent. I doubt very much we will return. Especially, when we enjoyed our other meals elsewhere so much.

For everything but the price, this is a really nice restaurant. The service was very good, the food was nice, nothing wrong with anything except that to charge £13 for a sandwich, and £9.25 for a dessert just seems a little steep. But, it is the middle of the lake district and there are plenty of people about who are wiling to pay these prices.

A very cosy cottage serving delicious hearty food. Slightly more expensive than other establishments, however the quality of food was good. Staff were friendly and the establishment filled up quickly so would recommend booking a table!
Georgia R — Google review
Service by the Scottish lady was very good. At same time we were thinking...where is our food? she came over and said, you have been waiting quite a while I will check with the kitchen. Food still took a while to arrive and we were disappointed when it did come. Maybe it's what we chose, but the bought in pie, frozen chips and a boiled carrot, didn't do it for me, and my husbands burger, frozen chips and what tasted like cold tinned tomato (salsa?) wasn't better. Relish was served in the Heinz squeezing bottle. Could they do better? When paying the bill, we were asked did you enjoy?.. I was honest that the service was good but food was basic, we were offered a free pudding, but declined as we were no longer hungry Kitchen let this place down.

What a great little place this is. We had the Steak and Ale pie and it was utterly delicious, One of the best I have ever eaten. My friend is a Chef & we both agreed that we definitely would come back the next time we are up in the area. The serving staff were lovely, efficient and always smiling. Top Tip!.. Book a table in advance, it's always busy which is the sign of a good restaurant.

Modern British restaurant
Fine dining restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is a charming British eatery that prides itself on using locally sourced rare breed meats and foraged goods. The restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a unique touch of personalization as guests are greeted with a letter from the chef explaining the inspiration behind each dish. Run by Cumbrian brothers, Ryan and Craig Blackburn, the restaurant's menu is heavily influenced by Cumbria's heritage, people, and landscape.
10/10, cozy atmosphere, absolutely amazing courses (including the vegetarian tasting menu too), only gripe would be that the pace at the start was good with food trickling out but by the 4th course it got quite slow and we were there got nearly 3hrs which meant my back started to hurt, didn't take away from the lovely evening though. My bf had the wine tasting menu which was a nice touch but the waiter bringing the wine out was very quiet and seemed almost nervous explaining each wine and we didn't really learn anything from it.
Issy B — Google review
Food, wine pairing, staff friendliness and ambiance of the venue is first class. The chef bringing out the main dish and having a chat with every guest was a nice touch. The restaurant is decorated in dark colours and striking art work. Every single dish was an explosion of flavours that worked perfectly. The only disappointment was my boyfriend made a note on our reservation that it was my 40th birthday (actually the day itself) and offered to pay more money to do some sort of treat over dinner to acknowledge this and nothing was done. And the table next to us got a “happy birthday” from their waitress with a dessert that said “happy birthday” and from a sounds of it another complimentary dessert dish so that was sad for us both to witness when he hoped for something similar especially being such a milestone birthday.

This was our favourite meal during our stay in Ambleside. Everything was so well done here from start to finish. The explanation, the appearance, presentation, and taste were exemplary. We loved it all and will definitely be recommending to our friends. Well done to all the chefs and staff here who obviously work so hard to produce such a wonderful experience for their customers.

Had zero expectations when booking the Old Stamp House for dinner. To say I was pleasently surprised would be an understatement. A truly special experience start to finish. Impeccable service from when you walk in the door, the level of attention to detail and presentation with each dish is impressive. 11 courses on the atumn menu which are all timed well, use the best of the best produce and every element is carefully thought out and elevated. The best meal I've ever had by far. A must visit for a stay in the Lake District.

An amazing restaurant. Well worth booking ahead of time. Staff were friendly, and professional. Ambience was very comfortable. We went for lunch. All the courses were excellent. The chef served eveyone and had a pleasant conversation with all the clientele. There was even a letter written by Ryan to the guest, set on each table. A unique experience and would highly recommend.

From start to finish excellent! Thank you team The Old Stamp House for a wonderful evening. We much appreciated the unique and personal touch on behalf of the owner Ryan that has added so much value to the dinner. What is this? Well, visit and see!
Ramona R — Google review
Great service and excellent value. We loved the opening dishes but felt the latter part of the menu was very heavy and a bit overwhelming in terms of the flavours and depths of the dishes which drops it from being a five star for us. Still, an obviously deserved award winning restaurant with plenty of character, honesty, flair and talent leading the kitchen delivering a down to earth experience. We thoroughly appreciated the accompanying notes for each dish. We would return and try again.

Dined at Matthews on Tuesday night when staying over in Ambleside. Luckily got a table as it was quite busy with bookings. The food was 5 🌟 Both of us had starters from the specials board, lobster ravioli and the piri piri prawns, then both had a pasta dish for mains. Outstanding. And the pasta portions are huge! Unfortunately they left us no room for dessert which also looked amazing. Would definitely visit again when back on the area. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

I was lucky to manage and book a table on the same day. Walk ins were not entertained during peak dinner hours as mostly everyone has reservations. Ordered proper beef steak and lamb shoulder and separate mushroom stroganoff for my daughter. She loved the combination of stroganoff and rice together. My family throughly enjoyed our food here. Kudos to the waitress who had to entertain our requests multiple times asking for spoons, small plates or plastic cup for my little one. Thank you for accommodating us! We will recommend others to this for sure!

House of Siam is a casual and intimate restaurant located in Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere. Despite being in a touristy area, this place stands out for its excellent authentic Thai cuisine and charismatic service. The restaurant is popular among locals and tourists alike, with a bustling atmosphere filled with people from various backgrounds enjoying the delicious food. The interior has an exotic vibe, and both the kitchen and staff are Thai, providing attentive and friendly service.
Was staying at a nearby hotel, we just walked down the road to see what we fancied. There were a few Thai restaurants in the area. The King of Siam took to our taste as it was colourful in decor. Staff very friendly and our dog was allowed. The Restaurant was empty when we arrived (early evening) but soon filled up with patrons.

As someone who has tried a lot Thai Restaurants in UK and also in Thailand, I think the food here is absolutely amazing. The seafood is so fresh and the flavour is more than just tasty. The price is also a plus point, it is in a tourism area but it is not pricey at all, while having the great seating and the best services. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Lake District to try them out.

Best Vegetarian Pad Thai I have had and Thai restaurant I have visited. The staff were amazing and ready to help at any moment. Ever since falling in love the first time I tried Pad Thai, I have struggled to taste a good Pad Thai where the flavours matched how I remembered it, and there is a balance between flavour and spice. This exceeded it and topped the first one I tasted. The presentation was beautiful. King of Siam won for me with it all: taste, food presentation, customer service, location , and the interior drew me in. Honestly, such a perfect meal for an anniversary with my partner. I truly hope I can have a dish that tasty again.

Hands down one of the best Thai meals we've ever had! Great décor and easy to forget you're in the Lake District for a while. Lots of options on the menu and the food came out quite quickly and it was amazing. The kids have never had Thai before and they really enjoyed it - they just had starters and those were plenty big enough for a 5 and 9 year old. The staff were very friendly - one went out of her way to try and get strawberries for my son's dessert after he said he really liked them. She later told me they'd run out so she'd been to the shop and they didn't have any either. I said not to worry about it and was asked if he liked raspberries. I said he loved them - thinking the restaurant had some - but she then went back out to the shop to get raspberries so he'd have some on his dessert. Such a nice touch and definitely above and beyond - he loved it! Will be visiting again next time we're in the area!

Visited this restaurant and the experience was pretty neat. The place had a lovely ambiance, making the dining experience more enjoyable. However, the food was a bit pricey, which was likely due to its location. Overall, the restaurant provided a decent experience, but the cost was a slight downside.

Visited King of Siam with my family and tried a variety of dishes — Spicy King Prawns, Salted Squid, Prawns Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, and Papaya Salad. The seafood was fresh, and the prawns were cooked perfectly with a nice balance of spice. The salted squid was crisp on the outside and tender inside. Fried rice portions were generous and flavorful, and the papaya salad added a refreshing, tangy kick to the meal. Service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Overall, a satisfying dining experience for Thai food lovers.

Nestled in the heart of Ambleside, Lake Road Kitchen is an intimate dinner-only restaurant that offers creative locavore tasting menus with optional wine pairings. The modest yet chic space sets the stage for a culinary journey led by chef James Cross, who draws from his experience at Noma in Copenhagen to create radical cuisine.
Did the 5 course meal to dip our toes into our first Michelin locally, definitely plan to do the 12 course. The flavors and dishes were well thought out and beautifully layered. The salmon dish and peas were PHENOMENAL. We even took home some fermented butter, which was insane! Definitely will make our way back and well worth the experience.

This food is unforgettable. This is the first Michelin-starred restaurant my wife and I have been to. My wife is vegan and I ordered the vegetarian menu. They were so accommodating and recreated most of the dishes based on our restrictions, but the food tasted like it was meant to be that way to start. The staff was also great, they were super friendly. Overall I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. The only negative was that it ruined the rest of the food during my stay.

We had the 8 course tasting menu in the wonderful Lake Road Kitchen. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. The food was exceptional. This is what a tasting menu is all about. Not everything scored top marks for us but we still recognised the skill and invention that had gone into the dish. The salmon was our favourite and the cheesecake was exquisite. A truly wonderful experience and we would thoroughly recommend.

It was a perfect place to wrap up my holiday. My friend recommended me the LRK and it was worth it! My favourites were iberico with egg yolk, octopus and wagyu and all the rest! Basically I haven’t left anything. I’m not a sweet tooth but both desserts were just right for me. Some sauce was a bit salty for me, but it’ll be okay for most people. Service was great and wine pairing was great too! Thank you!

Great Michelin restaurant, perfect for a date. The intimate setting with few tables makes it feel private and special. The food was delicious, though we expected a bit more “wow” from the menu. Service was superb.
Kwang S — Google review
We chose the 12 course meal with an added course and dessert, and it was worth every penny! Every plate was beautifully plated, and phenomenal. The head chef, James came out to explain several of the dishes in detail, from what makes the ingredient unique, to how it was sourced and prepared. The explanations of every dish made this a fascinating experience that set it apart from other Michelin restaurants since it’s never the chef, and the plates are not always explained in detail. The other servers/chef were all kind and friendly as well. We also loved how certain ingredients were paired with preparations that you would never think of, such as pea miso or barley koji. Being Japanese, I loved how old Japanese methods were used on untypical ingredients. Lastly, James and Darren (sommelier) chose a few wines for us, and they went perfectly with our meal. The wine pairing would be a good choice at this restaurant. The dishes are spaced with enough time that you wouldn’t have to rush drinking every glass, and their wines are incredible. If you are visiting Ambleside, this restaurant is a must! It was the highlight of our time in the UK, and will definitely be back if we’re ever in Ambleside again.

I was surprised with the 8 course tasting menu for my 25th birthday! James, chef patron, was a legend. You can tell he cares so much about his food. The bread was the BEST bread I've ever had. The butter that came with it was dry aged and it tasted meaty with the bread. My favourite dish, although it's hard to choose, was the salmon. I savoured every bite. I crave for pistachio gelato every time I visit a hot country in Europe. To have this at home in the Lakes, and not only this, but the best quality pistachios paired with British cherry jam. Incredible. Also, shout-out to Darren who was an exceptional server. Hats off, the experience really felt once-in-a-lifetime as I'll remember this meal for the rest of my life. They also made me feel very special on my birthday, which I didn't expect at all. Worth every single ££ spent and it was a privilege to be able to go there.

Luigi's is a charming, family-run restaurant in Ambleside that has been serving rustic Italian dishes for over 30 years. The menu features traditional Italian recipes and a tempting happy hour on most nights. The cozy setting with a fireplace adds to the homey atmosphere, making it an easy crowd pleaser. Customers have praised the excellent food and exceptional hospitality, with special mentions for the vegan options and high-quality homemade dishes at reasonable prices.
Great Italian food, very close to Hawkshead where we were staying. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere, service was quick and price very reasonable. We ordered Bruschetta and Chicken Pate as starters, delicious, however the bread served with pate could have been warm baguette instead of toasted breast- matter or preference really. For main my husband ordered Chicken Pizziola, nice portion of chicken breast with roasted potatoes and salad- again salad could have been grilled vegetables such as broccoli , bell peppers and carrots rather than cold mix- as mentioned matter of preference. I ordered Spaghetti Ragu which was just like bolognese and came with garlic bread which was great. Overall enjoyed it all and would come back when visiting Lake District in the future. Make sure you book in advance!

Well. Here goes. Italian food has been my go to favourite for over 3 decades and im sure Luigis is authentic Italian but unfortunately today the food was poor. Bruscetta. Poorly toasted baguette with no substance to it at all, topped with halved cherry tomatoes that where tossed in roughly chopped garlic. No oil. No acids to take the edge off the garlic, No onion. Just raw garlic. It burnt the mouth and pretty much destroyed my attempt to taste anything other than this for an hour. Chicken piziola. Full chicken breast with no attempt to tenderise it, served with a half decent sauce which I couldn't really taste because of a mouth full of raw garlic from the Bruscetta. A side salad straight out of a bag, and chips that would've made Morticia Adams look tanned. Ironically they where lovely. The plate was that hot when the waiter brought it that it burnt his hand through the teatowel he was holding with. I now have a lovely mark on my forearm to remember it by. The missis had Aribatta pasta. It was overcooked and dry and the chilli and garlic overpowered everything because it hadn't been cooked out properly. Im not sure whether it was a blip, but it felt to me like they just where not trying. It seemed dull and depressing and the other customers appeared to feel the same. The Staff where lovely though so thank you.

Visited on a Friday evening, booked a table the day before via email which I'd recommend as it's quite a small restaurant & being summer holidays Ambleside was quite busy. The service was good, although we did wait a good 30 minutes between starter & main course. One of our party didn't have a starter so that wasn't ideal as she was hungry. Food however was excellent & the portions generous.

Graze Cafe is a charming spot located in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere, offering a traditional English Cream Tea experience and a variety of aromatic tea selections. It's known for its nutritious meals, particularly popular for breakfasts and healthy alternatives. The cafe has been recognized as the top vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurant in Windermere, with options like Asian-inspired dishes, tofu curry, and Brazil nut sour cherry dessert.
Absolutely phenomenal food!! We are from Melbourne Australia and have been travelling England and Scotland. This for me was the best meal I have had since I have been here. It was quality food that tasted fresh and home made and I could tell the owner takes real pride in his shop. This is a real hidden gem in the Lake District!! Nice to see some healthy options on the menu too if your looking for some fresh wholesome food. Lived the beef udon!!

Such a cute little Japanese spot! 🥢💕 The food is outstanding – every dish was fresh, authentic, and bursting with flavour. Service was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious Japanese food in a relaxed setting.

The best food we’ve had so far on our tour! I had the Japanese Curry + Rice and it was fantastic! My friends had the Special Chicken Graze Rice Bowl and said it was great as well! We would definitely recommend checking it out.

Best meal out I've had in ages! The cuisine was exceptional, and as a vegan I had so much choice. Enjoyed the salads to start and the hearty and comforting noodle bowl, perfect for a rainy day

Very good place to eat with the family. We feel the japanese spicy in every meal and the famous Ramune (japanese lemonade) drinks.
Gregoire S — Google review
For the price I'd thought portion was very small. £3 for a can of coke?a bit steep. £47 for 2 adults and 1 child. My gyudon was a bit chewy as a native eater. 3 of 5 stars for me as much can be improved in balance between price vs portion control.

Our family enjoys Japanese food and we were delighted to find this place in the Lake District. The food is absolutely delicious—especially the Japanese curry bowls, which were rich, comforting, and incredibly flavorful. You can really taste the care and authenticity in every bite. There was a little confusion when we first arrived about how and where to place our order, and the food did take over 30 minutes to come out. That said, the quality more than made up for the wait. Once the food arrived, it was clear it was worth waiting for.

Super friendly & accommodating staff Only one gluten free option on the menu 'tofu' however they checked & replaced with chicken for me. The chef even came out & said he was just washing down for me! Gorgeous food! Thankyou!

Costa Coffee is a delightful counter-service coffee chain that has become a beloved spot for many. Known for its inviting atmosphere, it offers an array of hot beverages, refreshing iced coolers, and delectable sweet treats alongside savory sandwiches. Patrons often rave about the friendly and efficient staff who greet you with smiles, even during busy hours. Many visitors appreciate the cleanliness of the shop and its facilities, including well-maintained restrooms.
The staff here are lovely and left us with an overall, great impression of them and the store. They were so funny and helpful! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was good.

Nice Costa coffee. 2 toilets so a bit of a queue. Seating inside and outside. Only dislike was the cup of tea I ordered which literally looked like milky water with the large amount of milk added. Disgusting. Go back to letting us add our own milk or ask customers how they like it. This seems to be an issue in every Costa, staff just filling the tea with milk and it's horrible.
Bec — Google review
Service is always incredibly slow, there are time when I end up walking out at the weekends. Food service is very expensive apart from the offers, but the quality of the sandwiches on offer are definitely inferior to the alternative expensive offerings. Atmosphere is generally very good even when I’m on my own.

15 mins to order a coffee! There was just 2 ppl on the line, and the guy was just making a phone calls instead of taking orders, very no polite service and take edges, it wasn’t busy, just like 5 ppl at the costa coffee. Awful guy
Greta — Google review
Myself and my partner had a relaxing walk in Bowness and finished off the afternoon at Costa. There was a queue on arrival but the staff were polite and getting everyone served quickly. Only downfall for us today was the amount of people waiting for the toilets, there are 3 toilets available. We sat and waited but it seems that the shop is also used as a public toilet with a lot of people not actually buying anything. Needless to say this was a minor issue for us and the coffee and carrot cake were perfect!

One of the best experiences I’ve had in a Costa. Lovely, light airy environment with plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs (nice air conditioning too). Barista was super friendly and made a delicious coffee. Very happy!

Nice affordable place to grab lunch in an otherwise expensive town. Friendly staff. Had a nice sandwich that was marked down 50% to avoid food waste, and the large coffee lived up to its name. Nice outdoor seating to bask in the sun.

Went for breakfast at opening time. Long line and only one staff who had to make coffee for each order. Had to wait about 15 minutes while she had to make every order. She was very rude obviously because she was so rushed. Ordered wheat toast and she gave me white toast. Would not recommend if you have to wait to order.

The Lucky Dragon is a vibrant and eclectic bar that stands out in Windermere, offering a unique blend of Pacific-style street food and an energetic atmosphere. With its trendy decor, it’s the perfect spot for those looking to enjoy live music evenings or partake in fun activities like cocktail-making classes and yoga disco sessions. Their Sunday lunch menu is particularly noteworthy, featuring delicious options such as Flamed Pork Belly.
Great quality sweet and sour chicken. They made it Hong Kong style the way that I love it. If you're looking for THAT sweet and sour chicken (iykyk), order from here.
Jaahid A — Google review
I'd say the current 4 star average review score is accurate. To be precise I'd give it a 3.7. The sweet and sour chicken was really quite good and served piping hot. The batter around the chicken was done well. The meat was ok. Good variety of other ingredients, big chunks of pineapple and green pepper. Good portion size. The egg fried rice was disappointing, dry, not much flavour and seemed to be more lukewarm than the chicken. I'd go for boiled rice next time. Service was exceptionally fast. Good value at £8.80 for both dishes in 2024. In a town like ambleside with limited value takeaway options then I'd recommend Lucky Dragon.
Charles H — Google review
We spent ages looking for a place to have dinner in Ambleside and could not find space so ended up getting takeaway. The food from this place was fantastic! We have quite a few Chinese meals and they are usually pretty rough but this place puts them all to shame. I will definitely go back! Keep up the good work lucky dragon.
Dark J — Google review
The food was absolutely disgusting. After having 1 bite of both the hot and sour as well as sweet corn soup it was obvious the quality was more than subpar and that the chefs did not know a thing about authentic or even semi-decent chinese food in any fashion. We tried one bite of the chicken we bought and the texture and taste was not that of even some of the cheapest, lowest quality chicken I’ve gotten. We threw the rest of the food out as we were worried about getting sick. Please avoid this restaurant unless you want to be thoroughly disappointed.
RishiRex — Google review
Lucky dragon? More like spicy dragon. I thought I ordered salt and pepper chicken, but I was served what tastes like a chicken vindaloo. My mouth and throat is on fire. Think the chef needs to learn the difference between salt and chilli flakes.
Callum P — Google review
Exactly what you’re looking for in a Chinese takeaway- really tasty food, 5* hygiene rating, quick service and good price! We ordered food for 2 people for tea which came to just less than £10pp. Food was ready within 10 minutes of ordering on a busy Saturday night in the middle of summer! Do note there isn’t much space inside to wait so on a rainy day we would recommend preordering or bring an umbrella to wait outside! Also remember it’s cash only!
Sarah S — Google review
Fancied a Chinese so decided to go here. Ordered a special curry and a chilli garlic special and a egg fried rice. Really delicious, lots of meat and juicy king prawns. Best Chinese we've tasted in years.
Jean B — Google review
Hmmmmm.... I came here many years ago and had such an amazing Chicken Curry; alas it’s nothing like that anymore, change of Chef I fear... still... not a bad experience at all. Pretty standard Chinese food (unlike my visit many years ago). Like all take aways it’s “incredibly overpriced”

Bistro
Kysty is a relaxed dining spot that offers multi-course meals with wine pairings for both lunch and dinner. The name, meaning "fussy" in Cumbrian dialect, reflects the insistence on local ingredients rather than the restaurant's mood. It is the more casual counterpart to the Michelin-starred Old Stamp House. Despite still offering set menus, macaron-style amuse bouches, and wine pairings, Kysty provides a shorter and more straightforward dining experience.
The day we had our lunch reservation, it rained heavily in the Lake District. Considering the cancellation fee, we struggled through the rain from Bowness to Amberside, but unexpectedly, it turned out to be a delightful meal. It was even one of the top 3 dining experiences of our whole UK trip. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the Lake District. The restaurant's service was very friendly and professional. Based on recommendations, we ordered various appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Each dish was very satisfying. The Pigeon Breast was cooked like steak, juicy and sweet. The fish, Mackerel, was not fishy at all but with a good flavor. The dessert was a mousse with gingerbread, which I found to be very distinctive and delicious.

We had a beautiful meal with you yesturday evening, by far the best meal we have had in the lakes to date. Lovely staff, food very well presented, and allergies taken into consideration. Wine recommendations with each meal went really nicely with the meals we chose. Lovely atmosphere.

We received vouchers to dine here for our engagement and it was a lovely little treat. It is an A La Carte style menu with matching wine suggestions and there are plenty of options for everyone. All of the courses were beautifully cooked and presented and the staff were lovely! The only thing that didn’t wow me was the dessert and I love a good pud but overall the experience was 5*

A wonderful evening with top class food and excellent service. The staff were so helpful with food and wine choices for both one vegetarian and one meat eater. We would definitely recommend booking well in advance to anyone visiting Ambleside. Can’t wait to try the sister restaurant ‘The Stamp House’. Children on the next table, happy and content. Good atmosphere and chatty between tables. Good friendly ambience. Would recommend to all family and friends. Well deserving of our five stars.

Everything was 5 stars. It was our wedding anniversary so decided a treat was required. This exceeded our expectations. We chose to go with the wine pairing for each course and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I would definitely eat at Kysty again. We had a great night and we so well looked after by the staff. The food was truly incredible.

Hidden in a small alleyway away from the busy streets of Ambleside we discovered an hidden gem for culinary delight ;-) Bistro has a charming atmosphere and amazing staff providing a top notch service to guests. This was accompanied with amazing dishes that we enjoyed fully by us and our kids. Pre dinner snacks and bread were well presented and super yummy !! Venison and Fish mains were super yummy see photos. Accompanied by a good wine and local gin selection. Great evening out with delicate and well prepared food. Definitely will be visiting again in our next trip in Lake District Well done chef and team.

Amazing place. Chef went out of his way to prepare vegan and gluten free options for me which were incredible, he also came out to have a chat and ask me how the food was, which I really appreciate. All the staff here were friendly and welcoming and the whole restaurant has a beautiful vibe. Some of the best food we had in the lakes.
Sam B — Google review
I think this is the best restaurant I have ever been to. We arrived a little later than booked due to an accident on the road, but the staff were so polite and happy to still accommodate us when we were expecting to be turned away. We ordered starters, mains and desserts as we wanted to try a little but of everything. We received some complimentary nibbles before our starters arrived, which was such a lovely surprise and each thing that was served to us was a delicious mouthful of flavour heaven. We were also served a little bit of bread (I think they said that it was made with beer) which was very dense, but delicious and very filling. I really want the recipe to this bread so I can make it at home! Every time a dish came out, the waiter would kindly explain each element to us. The food is beautifully presented and each element of the dish really compliments the other. Even though the portions may be classed as small by some, they are incredibly filling and you definitely leave the restaurant feeling full and satisfied. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area and if I am ever back, will definitely visit again. For the quality of food you receive, this place is very reasonably priced as well.

This charming eatery offers freshly prepared meals at fair prices, making it a budget-friendly choice for travelers on the go.
I had been waiting for The Picnic Box to reopen following the refurbishment works and it was 100% worth the wait! The refurbishment works have transformed the shop into a great space and the quality of the sandwiches, cakes and drinks offered take it to the next level. The staff are really friendly and welcoming making it an even better experience. I had the pulled pork special and it was amazing, the perfect post run/walk sandwich. Cannot wait to go back!

We saw this place on our way into town coming from Grasmere and thought it looked modern and cute at the same time. Today we had the pleasure of trying the ‘fell walker’ ciabatta sandwich and the ‘salty dog’ crisps and it is the best tuna melt/sandwich I’ve ever had. I’m very pleased it opens at 8 am as I shall be coming back on Friday before heading south! The service was also great, the lady in the counter and the lovely chef at the back were local, polite and very friendly :)! Hasta pronto chicos!

The Bluebird Cafe on the Bay is a charming spot located near Coniston Water, offering picturesque views of the lake and the passing Steam Yacht Gondola. The cafe also features a covered heated terrace and ample parking. It's an ideal place to grab breakfast before embarking on a hike or take a mid-day break while exploring Bowness.
Not overpriced as you would expect from a tourist cafe. Really helpful staff even when busy. Food tasty and fresh.

I am disheartened to see the sale of so much plastic, bottled water, and other plastic bottled beverages at your café. We are in the throes of a plastic pollution crisis. When a café bordering a lake within a parks district (that welcomes millions of tourists who come to enjoy and learn from these ecosystems) profits off the sale of a material that is degrading this very space, it demonstrates an immense sense of cognitive dissonance. And perhaps, even worse, it normalizes passive degradation of the environment, by the way of our purchases. I believe you could at least sell aluminum, canned water, which is far more infinitely recyclable. Or, you could choose to cease the sale of single used plastics completely. How are visitors to this gorgeous town, or how the residents who live here, supposed to build a stronger connection to this environment if their only options for sustenance come wrapped in plastic that is destructing this very space? By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. And over 95% of the plastic we produce and consume does not actually get recycled, even when we try to make it so. Knowing that, what are you going to do to stop normalizing Plastic use? What is your responsibility as a purveyor located on a profiting from the health of a lake? Thank you for considering my feedback. It will take both the customer and the purveyor to stop normalizing and perpetuating the plastic pollution crisis.

Unprofessional Conduct by staff My family and I visited this cafe last week, anticipating a pleasant experience; instead, we were subjected to a deeply distressing and humiliating ordeal. Upon arrival, I escorted my family to a bench outside to seat them while I proceeded to order at the queue. Within moments, we were aggressively confronted by two staff members: a young woman and an older man. The man immediately began shouting at us, demanding that we vacate the premises because we didn’t order any stuff. His hostility was triggered solely by the sight of my daughter's unopened lunch box, which we carry due to her food allergies. I attempted to explain our situation –that my daughter doesn’t consume her food there. Just the children needs to be seated to avoid the heat while I was en route to place an order. However, the staff refused to listen and continue rising his voice in front of my children. This egregious lack of professionalism and basic compassion ruined our day. Later on my daughter started crying because she through it was her fault due to her lunch box. This establishment, under the direction of this staff, does not deserve a single star. We strongly advise families to avoid this cafe at all costs to prevent similar experience. The staff demonstrates disregard for common decency and customer dignity.

Popped into The bluebird cafe for a quick bite to eat whilst on a boat switchover. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful tasting brie, cranberry and bacon toastie and the BEST brownie I have ever had. It melted in my mouth. Ended up going back for seconds a few hours later. 👌
Ben P — Google review
All drinks served in take-away cups even if sitting in 😡 Not impressed. Ok so it has a small serving area but I've seen smaller cafes do better. Everything was served in single use plastic or 'paper' trays (plastic lined paper trays for sure) which is so lazy and a lack of thought for the environment when throwing everything away like that. But of course it save staff costs washing up which seems to be the name of the game these days. The scones were like shop bought, in fact not even that good! They were dry. I expected better but we were tired and needed a pit stop so didnt complain because the real clotted cream and jam(in, you guessed it plastic containers) just about saved it. Not that it looked like the staff would care if I did complain, bless them! They were friendly enough in an arms length kind of way. Its a small place on the side of the tourist info centre so just half a dozen tables. The table was clean but I expected better overall from a place like this after spending over £30. At least they had proper clotted cream and they gave me extra jam without hesitation which I can't knock them for. Not the best choice of cafe there's loads nicer nearby the amusements and up the hill in Bowness.

Popped in for a refreshing drink on the bank holiday. Service was quick and courteous. Myself and my partner both had a tropical smoothie (unfortunately they had ran out of ingredients for the berry version). Both were served in plastic cups with paper straws. Whilst they did taste very nice without to many chunks the price was on the high end of what I would pay. Apart from this I was happy with my little stop at the bluebird.

Lakeland Charcoal Grill Halal is a delightful spot for kebab lovers, offering a variety of delicious options that are sure to satisfy your cravings. The large mixed kebab features two succulent lamb skewers and tender chicken, complemented by generous portions of doner meat—definitely the highlight of the meal! While the accompanying salad could use some more vibrant ingredients like tomatoes or carrots, it doesn't detract from the overall experience.
While staying in the area, we ordered it online for pickup and we weren't disappointed. Brought it back to our accommodation and it was hot and tasty. The popcorn chicken was legend and made with real chicken and tasted fresh (greatly recommend). I ordered the cheesy chips as well which were delicious. My husband ordered the Donner meat and chips which was served in abundance and my husband enjoyed it. Good place to grab a late bite.

Adam C — Google review
Food pretty much as other comments on here, only went in as I had stayed out drinking too long and went past restaurant serving times. Service was ok to be fair guy polite not arrogant. Food was atrocious for £30, only got 1 large chicken kebab, 2 x chips, 1 tiny pepperoni pizza. I live in the North East and that place would be bankrupt in 1 week ! Terrible standard of over priced food, got one crappy little dry pitta bread that looked like it was from a supermarket, chicken was rubbery and bland, hardly any salad, chips were unedible, so hard I would of ended up with a trip to the dentist if hadn't binned them ! Pizza was bang average, chilli sauce was tasteless & asked for garlic sauce, never got it. All in all the pits...normally when your drunk it tastes ok, but not this food...avoid at all costs 🤮! I would rather of eaten a few Ginsters pasties from the 24 hr garage instead, at least would of had some flavour !

It was very average and so expensive! Not much meat considering the price, (6 PIECES OF MEAT FOR £14!) The salad was just an afterthought, with no tomatos, no care went into it. I asked for chillies, and they said they don't have these? Also the garlic mayo was horrible. We're from Wiltshire, and they fill the box up with meat! Usually, Turkish kebabs in any country are good but NOT this one. Avoid!

We stayed here as part of a spa package with my partner. We were both celebrating a 50th jointly. The service, and experience from start to finish was world class. There are some stand outs I need to mention. Sofia for sorting our room out with a bath and gell view, and a lighting situation. Logan being the best concierge and helping open the jammed french door for fresh air. Justin at Blue Smoke for being so flexible with lunch options and of course the very jovial Mel who served us a smashing breakfast on both mornings. Nothing was too much trouble and the communications were great. Amelia and Adrian both found out answers to our many question at the “W” restaurant on the 1st night of arrival. Yes it is more than your average, but you truly pay for what you get in this case. This was a memorable weekend and boy did the staff deliver and went above and beyond. Thank-you so much for your attentiveness, kindness and absolutely marvellous manners.

Visited for the Thermal Experience for our anniversary. By far the best spa we have been to, staff are very attentive and friendly, facilities all very clean and not too busy when we visited on a weekday afternoon. Very relaxing, beautiful location. We felt it was good value for money given all the facilities and some complimentary snacks. The afternoon tea was also very tasty and again staff very friendly.

Photographing a wedding at Low Wood Bay was definitely one of the highlights of my year. It was an Italian wedding, and the team there truly knew how to host a celebration that felt full of life and joy. The chandeliers and interior design make the venue look incredible and full of character. From the outside it may appear to be just a spa, but once inside you realise it holds so many beautiful surprises that make it truly one of a kind. The staff were fantastic, treating every supplier with the same kindness and care as their guests, which is something that really makes this venue stand out. Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, it also offers scenery that’s hard to match, giving every photograph a cinematic feel. A 10/10 venue that combines elegance, warmth, and unforgettable views.

I attended low wood bay resort & spa and from what we could see it looked lovely, we were welcomed as soon as we walked in, taken to our meeting room. The bar areas we really nice, even though it felt like a maze when you went from outside back in to find the meeting rooms. But it just added to the character of the place. There was a lovely outside court yard with heaters and blankets. I thought the hotel seemed lovely, and I am looking to book it for a little romantic break.

I visited Low Wood Bay Spa for the 3-hour thermal journey and it was an incredible experience. The amenities are top-notch, with beautiful facilities and thoughtful touches throughout. Being able to order drinks directly from the pool added a touch of luxury, and I really appreciated the free snacks and cold face towels that were brought around periodically – they made the whole experience feel very well looked after. The spa itself would easily have been a five-star experience. However, I was left disappointed with the treatment I booked. For the price (around £100 on top of the spa package), I expected a premium experience, but it fell far short. We were taken in after our scheduled time, and the treatment itself finished well before it should have – lasting only around 25–30 minutes. For that cost, it simply didn’t feel worth it and took away from what was otherwise an outstanding visit. Overall, the spa journey is absolutely worth it and I’d recommend it without hesitation, but I’d caution others about booking treatments given the poor value for money.

I have been to many spas in the US and overseas. I must say that this was the best one ever. Although I have been to spas with more pools than this one (they have quite a few) it is quality over quantity in this case. The spa is spotless. The facilities perfect with changing areas and toiletries, showers, etc. The indoor and outdoor pools have a variety of temperatures. The attendants are attentive. I have never seen a spa that has so much enticing finger food available and people coming around with the best looking cupcakes, etc. My massage was excellent. I would return in a heartbeat! I did not stay in the hotel, only went to the spa for the day.

Hands down, the best spa ever. The attention to detail in here is amazing. The amount of places and pool, and hot tubs and rooms are unreal The lil relax room you go into before a treatment is amazing, and then even better is the relaxation room after The staff coming round with frozen towels and fruit ect was an amazing touch We had the wood smoked afternoon tea. Genius idea, would love to take my husband back to try it This place is worth every penny

My partner and I recently visited Low Wood Bay for an overnight stay with spa access, and unfortunately, we left feeling quite disappointed overall. When booking, we called the hotel directly and were redirected to a third-party system to book our stay and spa access. We weren’t told that this only included the basic indoor facilities, and when we arrived, we were informed that access to the outdoor area came at an additional cost. We decided to pay the extra £25 each the next morning, but weren’t told that half the outdoor facilities didn’t open until 10am, despite being advised to go at 7:30am. Once we got in the sauna the staff working on cleaning the pool came and stood in the sauna with us trying to dry off because it was raining which seemed very unprofessional. We only managed around 30 minutes of use as most things were closed. Throughout our visit, communication from staff was poor. When my partner raised the issue afterwards, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Our meal at Blue Smoke was another letdown. We ordered the Châteaubriand steak for two, which came piled onto a small sizzling plate—completely different from what’s shown online. The sauce portions were tiny (about a quarter full), and when we politely asked for more, we were charged again. For the price, we expected a much higher standard of both food and service. Breakfast the next morning wasn’t much better. We were served coffee twice after ordering tea, and overall the meal was mediocre at best. Considering the price and reputation of Low Wood Bay, our experience felt overrated and overpriced.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa offers a picturesque lakeside retreat with stunning views and charming amenities. The hotel features a warm restaurant, a bar, a spa, a boat dock, and an indoor pool. Guests can enjoy the graceful ambiance overlooking rolling gardens and private jetties from rooms with balconies. The wellness offerings include luxurious Elemis treatments and a large indoor pool.
Me & my husband had a lovely stay. All of the staff were friendly & helpful. Delicious 3 course dinner & great breakfast. Extra treat to use the spa facilities too. Couldn't ask for a better view when eating our meals & having a relax in the hotel lounge. Lovely traditional English hotel.

Lovely old Hotel. Comfy bed. Nice and warm. Good bathroom but no complimentary extras. Pump soaps in shower but no washcloths? Dining room for breakfast was really nice. The black pudding and hash browns were a bit dry but a really nice selection of fruits to go with cereals. Good pot of coffee and the wait staff in the dining room were 10/10.

My wife arranged a surprise night away for us to celebrate my birthday and my becoming a pensioner at this hotel. I understand that it’s meant to be a historic property and that it tries to maintain that traditional charm — and that’s absolutely fine, as it’s part of the character. The reception staff were excellent and made a good first impression. The room itself was pleasant, but it was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint. Unfortunately, the cleanliness left a lot to be desired – there was something splattered on the wall near my wife’s side of the bed (see photo) & you could write your name in the dust on the window sill. Breakfast was the real disappointment. The member of staff who greeted us (her name was Maya) made us feel as though everything was too much trouble. After being seated, we asked if we could move to a table with a better outlook — the look on her face made it clear she wasn’t pleased, though she did allow it. Maya really needs to remember that guests should come first if she’s to stay in a customer-facing role. We were served cold toast, and my wife’s scrambled eggs on toast were stone cold and had such a strong smell that she couldn’t eat them. Overall, the breakfast experience was poor and completely out of line with the prices charged. This is not a cheap hotel, and while the building has charm and the reception staff were lovely, the attention to cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service needs serious improvement. Sadly, it didn’t offer value for money, and we left feeling disappointed.

I stayed at this hotel from the 1st to the 3rd of August with my two children. I’ll start with the positives: The location is fantastic,, I absolutely loved it! The hotel lounge offers a beautiful view of the lake, and enjoying an afternoon tea there is truly special. It’s also very conveniently located, close to many restaurants, pubs, and bars. Breakfast was okay,, not amazing, but decent enough to start the day and the service was slow but acceptable. Now for the negatives: When we arrived to check in, there were two ladies at reception. One referred us to the other, who immediately seemed upset and said to her colleague, Did you refer them to me?They then started arguing in front of us, which felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Our room was okay but not great. The toilet didn’t flush properly, which was frustrating. There’s also no air conditioning, which could be uncomfortable in summer,, although luckily the weather was fine during our stay. Service in the lounge was disappointing. I went to order afternoon tea to enjoy the view, but after bringing the food, they forgot the actual tea. I had to remind them three times, and even then, the tea only arrived after about half an hour, without any apology. When I said “thank you,” the bartender didn’t even respond, which felt rude and unwelcoming. Overall, the location and views are wonderful, but the service and some aspects of the facilities could be improved.

The service here was incredible the staff so friendly and welcoming, the environment is clean. We used the spa facilities, which were great, we didn't get any treatments on the day but did use the pool, ice shower, steam room and the sauna followed the afternoon tea, that had a good selection of sweet and savoury choices. We was given choices as to where we'd like to sit, the staff member showed us a few tables and also suggested the best seat for the perfect view. Thank you very much for hosting us. We didn't use any of the rooms as we did a day trip.

Like a lot of other Macdonald hotels I’ve stayed in recently they are all in need of an upgrade. The location could not have been better and as we had upgraded to a deluxe king and it had great views down the lake but the room itself had stains on the wall and worn seats. The bed itself was very comfortable and the bathroom clean with a large walk in shower. The disappoint was that we had to pay an additional £25 per day for car parking in the hotels car park and even worse they had an additional £5 charge at breakfast for meals other than the full English such as eggs Benedict or avocado on toast, which you would normally expect from other hotels to be standard I would encourage anyone to visit the area as it is stunning with lovely shops, bars and restaurants, but don’t expect a 4 star hotel experience if you choose the Old England .
Andy G — Google review
The hotel overall is lovely, the views are incredible! But for me the rooms could have been subpar and i still would have given 5* ans that all because of the staff. Ive never been to a hotel before where i am So thought, i am dairy free, more then happy to miss out on things and adapt myself, but as soon as the staff in the restaurant knew i was brought soya milk, sorbet instead of the desert everyone else had and i really loved that an appreciated that, it seemed that nothing was too much trouble I cant wait to return as a holiday guest instead of a business trip

We booked an Autumn deal, staying overnight 30th Sept 2025 in a standard room. No view but it was just a bed for the night and the views were enjoyed when walking around & sat in the restaurant. We live in Cumbria and for many years have had breaks around Windermere and the surrounding area. This was our first time at the hotel, the main draw on this occasion was the 20m pool, although having said that the weather was lovely on this day and we frequented local bars, sitting outside to enjoy the views. Would we return to the hotel = Yes we would, however there are many lovely hotels in the area for similar pricing, they do not charge a supplement for a breakfast choice and most certainly do not charge £25 for parking EACH day of your stay! The hotel is looking a bit tired in places which suprises me because of its stunning location and part of the huge McDonald chain of hotels. We paid £160+ for one night B & B + the £25 parking fee. The evening meal & wine was lovely and served in the Lakeside restaurant with stunning views of the lake, piers and marina. Breakfast was in the same restaurant. I am not a person that generally enjoys breakfast but when I do, a hotel choice is generally Salmon / eggs. I had nothing else apart from toast, coffe and fruit juice but still had to pay a supplement because I chose Salmon. The coffee was weak. Unsure re coffee brand but on the tongue a taste of herbal / fruity?? It was...ok. My wife ordered elements of a full cooked breakfast but the hash brown was missing when the meal was served. Staff = lovely and helpful as always. Reception, restaurants, bar and room cleaning. The only real negative point is the £25 per day if you use the hotel car park. Don't pay that. I have never paid anywhere near that ever! For parking. Many hotels in the immediate area do not charge a parking fee. Local streets have some limitations for parking, but if you are prepared to wait until after 5pm and move before 9am the following morning, you might find free parking. In addition and with a minutes walk, you have council car parking which is far cheaper than £25 per day. Per day!!! Overall, a nice stay, great location and set within one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas in Cumbria. Yes we would stay again, but will we - maybe not because locally we have stayed in beautiful nearby hotels, some with stunning views and all with free parking

Sugar & Spice Cafe & Bistro is a charming spot in the Lake District, offering reasonably priced, house-made dishes and cocktails. The cafe is known for its proper jacket potato and full English breakfast, complete with excellent sausage, bacon, and eggs. The hospitable staff creates a welcoming atmosphere with friendly service. Additionally, the cafe offers vegan options and is dog-friendly. With its clean and pleasant setting, it's a great place to enjoy a meal or grab a drink later in the day.
A very lovely coffee shop! 🙌🏻Highly recommended! We started the day with hot chocolate in Slate and also stored our luggage here. We didn't come to pick up our luggage in the afternoon because it rained. Unexpectedly, Kitty left her phone number and waited for us. She also let us catch the train back to London. She is as kind and enthusiastic as an angel. 🥹🥹If you also need coffee and storage, you can't miss here 100%!😄👍

Popped in for a snack and beverage. A bit confusing with the outbursts of need to clean table before sitting but hay ho on with Hygiene is the way to go - and agree with but just questioning the way it was carried out …I get it but not sure if many others do! Food ok, compared to portion size and price was a tad high. Coffee good, food taste good. The dog thing could get a bit complicated but love dogs and gave 2 of our own but totally understand 🇬🇧 dog friendly operations.

Went to quickly grab some food before travelling, I have to say the quality and prices don’t really match up unfortunately. £8.55 for a cream cheese bagel with salmon, really low quality produce (bagel not even toasted!) and just marked up to almost London prices. Also purchased a bacon and sausage in a ‘specialty bread roll’ which came to £7.75. The sausages and bacon were overdone and felt like they had been cooked hours before (we went in at 10am and it was fairly quiet, I’d expect it to be prime breakfast time so would expect it to be fresh) and the ‘specialty’ bread roll was literally just an average shop bought bread roll. Very unfortunate as the other reviews looked good but what we’ve received just feels incredibly low on the quality scale in terms of the price. I would heed the other warnings in terms of the quality of food here. The server was very pleasant and kind though. Response: The bagel was not toasted you can even see in the pictures. It may have been flash toasted but it just wasn’t long enough as it was unfortunately still very chewy and raw. I think it’s great that you source your sausages and bacon from local butchers, however the sausages were very overdone and the bacon was more like jerky. I could only put this down to just poor preparation of the food, if the quality is what you say it is. Unfortunately the use of ‘high-quality’ produce really doesn’t help if it’s lost in the preparation of the food. We visited your restaurant because it was not a greasy spoon, and we wanted some nice sandwiches to take with us and had no problem paying the fairly high prices because you would believe it ensures quality. The point is that sadly the food that we were given really was more akin to something you would get from a greasy spoon, all for a premium price.

Very friendly staff, excellent coffee, good food. It's evident that this is frequented by locals as a lot of the staff knew some of the customers by name. We got table 1 which was close to the coffee grinder which was a bit noisy so would recommend getting a table little further away from the bar if possible.

Outstanding cafe - I contacted to see if they could help me with a special takeaway afternoon tea and Amanda could not of been more helpful. The afternoon tea was exceptional and priced perfectly- sandwich choice fab and all sandwiches delicious, beautiful sausage rolls and pork pies, salad, scrumptious scones complete with both clotted cream or butter and jam and an amazing selection of cakes. Amanda and team could not have been more helpful- due to poor weather we needed to switch the day the afternoon tea was required at short notice and Amanda was so accommodating - thank you Amanda and Sugar & Spice - we will always pop in when we are in Windermere - highly recommend and if you want afternoon tea - particularly to take away then Sugar & Spice should be your first choice.

Waited 45 mins for two halloumi and mushroom burgers that both had the sauce missing. They didn‘t taste very exciting to us, even when we added the sauce after it was brought to us on the side when we said something. I liked the chunky chips and side salad, but definitely wouldn‘t go again for the burger. Service was nice but slow. Just wanted a quick lunch, but wouldn‘t go back due to long wait times and unexciting to me food. Atmosphere was very casual, self service utensils, napkins, water and sauces.

The Windermere Speakeasy is a unique haunt that transforms from a daytime coffee house to an evening cocktail bar. The bar's relaxed atmosphere and friendly service make it a gem in Windermere. Guests have particularly enjoyed the Italian sharing platter and well-crafted cocktails.

Booked a table, came recommended. Looking at most of the reviews, I thought it'd be very busy. We booked for 7.30 16th July 22, and it was very quiet. Didn't ruin our experience though. Staff all very attentive, menu selection wide and varied and thoroughly enjoyable. We ordered a Brie, Platter and fries...delicious for the two of us. A gem of a bar in Windermere! My husband and i visited this bar on the last night of our long weekend away. We had a gorgeous Italian sharing platter and cocktails and ended up staying until late and getting more food for dinner! The quality of food and drink is excellent and the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service made our visit all the more enjoyable. It was lovely to sit and enjoy our time there without feeling rushed, hence why we decided to stay for most of oir evening :) Would also recommend happy hour from 4:30-6pm. Thank you to the staff there for a brilliant experience x

Big supermarket Booths with a good selection of regional produce, next to the Windermere train station. It has a cafe and food takeaway at the rear of the store, very good value for money. All day breakfasts are available as well as afternoon teas. Service can be a little slow at times but overall this is a great supermarket in Windermere.
I was told that you could find 'Booths' here in Windermere and I was certainly not disappointed. Goods sold here are diversed and organized. Prices well labelled. You could get all of your daily necessities here, from fresh meat and groceries, pastries, ready-to-eat snacks and prepackaged food, dairy and cheese, teas and coffee etc. Place was spacious too so you could shop comfortably.

Large supermarket focusing on quality local products, besides the usual offerings. Fresh cheeses and other delicacies can be bought at the counter. They have a large selection of specialty wines and beers. Definitely a more upmarket supermarket than the Sainsbury and Coop in town.

Visited today for breakfast in store. Food was nice and very reasonable. Staff friendly and the place was clean. Only problem was the constant BANGING all the time really LOUD from staff making coffee and slamming the coffee maker filter. Did my head in. Lots of other customers saying same. Saying they won't be back. Yeah. Not good. Avoid unless banging doesn't bother you while you eat. We will stay away. Shame as food was okay

This is a great store, it's got lots of choice with everything you'd expect and more. There's a section that sells souvenirs and household bits. You get 2 hours free parking or you can extend to 3 if you buy food from the cafe.

Always use Booths at Windermere when staying or visiting. Excellent selection of products; always fresh, good quality and often locally produced. It is a shame that Booths is restricted to the North of England and they do not have any locations further South - although having a branch in South East Kent may stretch their supply lines.

It's basically an under cover Waitrose. The colour scheme, set up and feel, all point to a Waitroseish design. That being said! I feel the quality is equally as good if not better in some instances. I think they have done a great job with this shop. Hopefully we see more of them.

The staff were very nice and helpful but the food was pretty poor I'm afraid to say. Very small portions, with toast that had barely seen heat. The eggs we had were cooked well, but the pancakes tasted strangely floral and the Nutella was actually chocolate sauce that also had an odd taste. A real shame the food doesn't match the service.

I think if you visited on a quiet day you'd have a good experience. The waiter was very pleasant. I stopped by this cozy brew room cafe for a quick breakfast and an iced coffee, and I’m so glad I did! The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming — the perfect place to start the day in Windermere. My iced coffee was perfectly brewed: bold, smooth, and refreshing without being too bitter. For breakfast, I had a simple yet satisfying meal that hit all the right spots! — fresh ingredients, great flavors, and generous portions. The staff were so friendly so whether you’re in for a quick bite or a slow morning with a book, this spot has the kind of charm that makes you want to return witch I did the following day to try there fresh baked cakes and another ice coffee ☺️Highly recommended!

Lovely cafe in the town. We had brunch here and they had waffles with fried chicken which is what I was craving. However, the waffles turned hard and dry quickly because of the weather - I ate slowly so could be my fault! The place is nice, with enough seating area for few people. What an amazing little place to stop and enjoy some peace and a environment more than welcoming. Arrived as a visitor while celebrations were being planned for VE day. The community of the attached church were friendly and I would recommend to anyone. Lovely little place.

This cafe has been referred to as Windermere's best kept secret and I'd say that's a very accurate description! The building itself is spectacular and it has been beautifully decorated – it feels very cozy. The staff are so warm and welcoming, especially with our young children. And the food is really good. There's a lot of choice and it's all great value and delicious.

Always a great experience visiting The Mission Cafe. One of the best in the local area. The staff are so friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. Sorry about the photos: I forget to take them before I start to eat, when they would look even better! I'll try and remember next time and update the photos.

I couldn't wait to write this review. I just finished my big mission breakfast. The place deserves a 5* rating. Straight from when we entered for a breakfast to be greeted by the staff and served us delicious food and until I finished every crumb of it. The ambience is lovely. Such a lovely place. The front overlooks a beautiful park - see picture. Seating available both indoors and outdoors. Please vote for them for 'England's Business Awards 2024'.

A little gem in the heart of Windermere. A very warm welcome. Delicious food all cooked fresh. My partner even got a warm chocolate brownie for her birthday, which was delicious. Dogs and kids also welcome which is always nice. Well done guys 👏🏼

Just been here today for lunch (3 adults and friendly spaniel). The lady has just taken the business on for herself. The breakfast wrap was huge. The shared meat & cheese platter was excellent. We were offered a free refill for our tea & extras to our platter if we wanted it. Friendly service, reasonable prices. We would definitely return.
Baz H — Google review
Met Karen the owner of the cafe, very welcoming and accommodating to meeting my mums needs who has celiac disease. We both shared a platter of mixed meats and cheeses, food was great, the cafe is a lovely place to sit in or out, and the service is how a business should be run. Definitely would recommend anyone visiting Windermere, to eat here.

Really good coffee here. Its a great find in town centre, additionally the service was very friendly too.

The prices are really reasonable, which is always a bonus in the Lakes. I’d highly recommend the Philly cheese steak sandwich/toastie—it was absolutely delicious! The brownies are also amazing, and they do homemade soup too, which isn’t on the menu, so you have to ask about it (like a fun little secret dish!). The lady who owns and runs the café is so friendly and welcoming—she really creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to come back again. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

From the warm welcome from Karen and Jayden to the best breakfast in the lakes. Would 💯 recommend a visit to Brambles as you arrive as a customer and leave feeling like visiting friends. For a solo traveller this is the best experience you can get. The full breakfast and flapjack are recommended, my second visit in 2 days and will be in every day. Thanks guys for making me and my girls feel so welcome.

What an absolutely delightful, friendly bunch of people. In for a nice glass of red on a cold, wet May Bank Holiday, I found this café a warm haven. Thank you for your hospitality & giving me a window seat to "people watch"!!🌸💙🌸
Helen F — Google review
We're local to the area and finally thought we'd pop in a give it a go as it always looks lovely from the outside. (When you can see through the condensation!) Sadly we were really disappointed with our experience. All dishes £12+ but it was no where near worth it. Microwaved, premade rubbish. Pancakes were awful with one sad rasher of bacon and the hash brown stack was a sad sight for the price! We love to try and support local businesses but this is daylight robbery. Some serious improvement is needed.
Amy W — Google review
The food would have been 2 star, if it was half the price. Very expensive for the quality. It seems like they used the cheapest ingredients they could find. Hash browns were soggy. Tomatoes were flavourless. Ordered 2 pots of tea but they only brought one cup for the whole meal, even after asking for the second one. We’ve had better food in a Wetherspoons. The vibe was chaotic. Some of the staff were genuinely friendly and nice, but one lady in particular was dismissive.

I visited this café in the heart of Windermere and was really impressed. The vegan breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of tasty items. It's one of the best vegan breakfasts I’ve had. The staff were warm and welcoming, greeting me with a smile, which made the whole experience even better. The café itself has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a meal or a coffee break. Highly recommended for everyone, especially vegetarians and vegans looking for quality options.

Our first time in Windermere and enjoyed a lovely breakfast (scrambled eggs on sourdough and a bacon sandwich) Lovely friendly welcome on arrival from the lady at the counter. Couldn’t fault the service. Gorgeous seating and decor. Perfect start to our weekend.

We feel robbed. We asked for two flat which came up like coffee with cold milk. Poached eggs were rock hard, less than a standard cafe food… for £30! Staff are very friendly but food is not worth the money at all.

Coffee shop
Toast is a popular coffee shop in Windermere, known for its delicious toasties and top-notch coffee. Visitors rave about the incredible coffee and tasty food, with one reviewer mentioning the amazing Reuben Sandwich with a Korean twist using Kimchi. The menu offers unique options like Korean Shredded Chicken and an Egg Sando with Bacon, all served alongside great coffee. Despite being busy, the friendly staff provide quick service in this cozy spot that's also dog-friendly.
The food was so delicious! We had the Italian Deli and the Korean Chicken. There was plenty of filling and the bread is cut so thick that the portion size is very generous. We also had a brownie that was so lovely. The coffee was also great. Would come back ☺️ There are 2 large tables so you may share the table with other people, but there’s enough space to not notice!
Jessica H — Google review
The toast sandwiches were great, I recommend the egg one over the one with beef and pickles. What I didn't appreciate was that the brioche wasn't filled down to the bottom. Also the tables have to be shared with the others and you have to clean them yourself. Also the water glasses should be cleaner. I did love the coffee though, I had the fruity caramel deep taste and it was fantastic, very good quality of coffee.
Florin T — Google review
Lovely little place in Windermere. We arrived at 1:30, and they were out of stock of all but two of their toasties. So I’d recommend trying to come for an early lunch. I got the kimcheese toastie and it was lovely! The staff were really lovely too. Definitely worth a visit.

We stopped here to get sandwiches for our journey home - and ish we’d gone in sooner on our stay as they were absolutely delicious! Really friendly staff. They may not have the biggest menu but what they do have is amazing. 100% recommend
Tanya R — Google review
Lovely little cafe, with the perfectly balanced coffee. The toastie with gochuchang Korean chicken was fab and filling, but they ran out of stock very quickly. Seating is communal and limited, but very cute and cozy. Def recommend this place when in Windermere.

Cosy vibes, nice staff and good options. I love that there’s a dairy free option for drinks for people with dairy allergy. The iced oat matcha latte was really good, I’d recommend if you’re a matcha lover. There’s a bowl of water for dogs as well. A great place to stop by

One of my favourite cafés in Windermere, hands down. If you're looking for a great breakfast spot, Toast serves some of the best toasties in town. They open at 9 AM, and most of the times I visited in the afternoon, they were already sold out. It actually took me four tries to finally get my first sandwich but it was absolutely worth the wait. I’ve tried their Korean shredded chicken, BBQ pulled pork, and kimchi cheese toasties. All of them were undeniably delicious, with the pulled pork being my personal favourite. The Americano was also excellent, and the customer service was warm and welcoming. The café is quite small, so if you're planning to dine in, it's a good idea to time your visit accordingly, takeaway might be the easier option during busy hours.
AKHIL_VARGHESE_ITTY — Google review
We ordered two chai lattes and both were honestly “disgusting”. The chai powder wasn’t even dissolved properly, and the first sip really surprised me — it’s hard to make a bad chai latte, but somehow they managed to do it. We couldn’t even finish them (barely drank 2/5 of the cups). As for the food: The egg sando was okay — not great but not terrible, around 7/10. The Korean chicken was way too salty (and at that point, I couldn’t even drink my chai latte). The fish & chips toast was too bland and lacked any flavour. Each toast was around £10, which felt quite disappointing considering the taste — definitely not worth the price. The only thing we actually liked about this place was how they make the toast look so pretty. We didn’t say anything to the staff because one of them showed attitude towards us, and we honestly didn’t feel comfortable talking to her. A small suggestion — it would be much nicer if they could change the two huge tables into smaller ones, because we really don’t like sitting in the same table with strangers. Overall, Toast could definitely do better

The Botanical Kitchen is a newly opened vegan and vegetarian eatery located in Windermere. The menu offers a variety of plant-based options, including brunches, Sunday roasts, charcuterie boards, and a Kentucky Tofu Fried burger. The cafe provides a relaxed dining experience and is dog-friendly with outdoor seating. Visitors have praised the welcoming atmosphere, delicious food options such as mixed salads and sweet potato chips, as well as the incredible cakes.
Stopped by here today to collect some cheese I'd pre ordered. Really nice place, lovely people to chat to and the food was absolutely delicious. Spot on if you're up in the lakes.

I visited Botanical Kitchen while on a hiking trip to the Lake District with my girlfriend, who’s vegan. We were looking for a spot that could cater to her dietary needs, and this place didn’t disappoint. The food was absolutely delicious, with lovely options that felt fresh and thoughtfully prepared. One minor letdown, though, was the fact that they serve the pies cold and don't offer to heat them. We asked the staff if they could warm it up, and while the lady at the counter was incredibly helpful and checked with the kitchen, they ultimately wouldn’t heat it. It was a bit disappointing, as a warm pie would have made the experience even better. Despite this, Botanical Kitchen is a beautiful place with a nice atmosphere, and the food quality certainly stands out. I would recommend it, especially for anyone looking for plant-based options in the area.

Super tasty vegan food. Everything was fresh. Staff were welcoming and friendly. As two American hikers visiting the Lake District for a getaway, this was the perfect place to refuel ourselves before another hilly adventure. Even my meat-eating hubby thought everything we ordered was delicious. We will definitely be back!

Incredible plant based food. We also had a pleasure meeting and chatting with a super passionate owner. We would recommend enjoying any meal here to anyone and everyone! Visit and see for yourself...and thank us later 🌞

I had a very tasty lentil soup at the Botanical Kitchen this morning and it was delicious. The owner is very nice and friendly and she also offered me a taste of her Cashembert cheese with home made onion relish, really very delicious. I loved the decor here and service was fantastic! I also got a sample of the hot chocolate which was great. I will definitely be back to try something else soon :-)

Please ignore the bad reviews which have been written by people who have clearly never visited. This is a gem of a cafe, which is much needed in an area where vegan options are lacking. We travelled to Bowness especially to have lunch at The Botanical Garden and we were not disappointed. The staff are so lovely, welcoming, accommodating and kind. The food was absolutely delicious and filling (we had the nachos, soup and hazelnut & custard pastry - which you would never know were vegan). The cheeseboard on a nearby table looked like genuine cheese, and it was all made by the talented chef. We loved the house plants and decor. There’s also a sheltered outside seating area at the front of the cafe. The cafe, toilets and kitchen were spotlessly clean. We can’t recommend this cafe highly enough, and we hope it continues to thrive and rise above the hurtful Google reviews.
Siona G — Google review
We had a corn chowder was lovely and creamy with a hint of spice and jacket potato with cheese and coleslaw. Really good tasty vegan food. We also tried some delicious homemade vegan blue cheese and camembert on home made crackers, Great service, would highly recommend.

I really enjoyed my visit with my family to The Botanical Kitchen a few weeks ago. The cafe has such a beautiful feeling to it and the owner made us feel very welcome. There was so many delicious options to choose from. I went for the mixed salads and the sweet potato chips. I really liked the little truffles that accompanied my coffee. I'll definitely be back for another visit soon! The cakes looked absolutely incredible! If you're planning a visit to the Lakes definitely check out The Botanical Kitchen!
