If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Javanese tradition combined with a relaxing countryside atmosphere, Kandang Ingkung is the perfect spot. Hidden away in Sleman, this restaurant feels like a little village escape, complete with joglo houses, bamboo huts, leafy gardens, and even a kids’ play area.
The highlight here is definitely the Ayam Ingkung a whole free range chicken slow cooked for hours until the spices sink deep into the meat. It’s served beautifully on banana leaves with fragrant rice, sambal, sautéed banana blossoms, and crispy spinach crackers. The flavor is rich, comforting, and perfect for sharing. Another must-try is the Garang Asem Bambu, a tangy soup uniquely cooked and served inside bamboo, which adds a subtle smoky aroma.
Snacks like corn fritters, tempeh, and fried cassava with cheese make a great side, and don’t miss their coffee corner where you can enjoy spiced Javanese coffee on a pay-as-you-wish basis plus, we also got free kopi, wedang sereh jahe, and sayur lodeh as part of the experience, which felt like a warm and generous touch.
Prices are very reasonable considering the portions and the experience: around Rp 149,000 for a whole chicken set (feeds 4–5 people), and smaller sets starting at Rp 38,000 per person.
Overall, Kandang Ingkung is not just about food it’s about experiencing Javanese culture and hospitality in a natural setting. A great place for family gatherings, group meals, or simply unwinding while enjoying authentic flavors.
