We were given corner seats which were a bit tight and not the most comfortable, but that’s understandable as we booked before an hour. It’s clearly a busy and popular place! Tried mocktail and it was so good. There are good vegetarian options on the menu. We tried a few small bites and they were tasty (and yes, true to “small bites” portion size). The cone on rice was delicious — I especially liked the little white sauce on top, not sure what it was but it worked well. The kulcha in the small bites selection was also very good, though a little oily for me. For mains, the signature mushroom dish was a definite standout — a must try. The black lentils were okay, but the overall flavours were still enjoyable. We were quite full, so skipped dessert this time, but will definitely come back to try it next visit. They used to be good 10 years ago and are still surviving based on their historic reputation. The food was a HUGE disappointment. Not authentic at all and does not match the descriptions on the menu. The prawn Konkani was described as a blend of tang and spice but was super sweet and tasted like it was covered in sugar syrup and made for 5 year olds. Tandoori salmon had no tandoor flavour at all. Even when requested, all dishes lacked authentic spice and were too sweet and bland. There are much better Indian restaurants around - we will definitely not be returning or recommending to anyone. We were wondering why a place that used to be hard to get into was half empty on a Saturday evening. After having their food we could see why.

Ordered and picked up for delivery - Chicken Tikka Masala(Super Hot), Tandoori Chicken and Garlic Naan. I would have given 5 stars but hugely disappointed with Garlic naan and tandoori chicken. Common guys you are better than this. All Naans were very thick and flat and more like uncooked thick paratha with garlic butter on top. I think the dough was not set before cooking or it wasn’t cooked properly. Next Tandoori Chicken- It looked and delicious but did not have that yummy taste was missing from the Tandoori chicken. Chicken Tikka Masala- this dish was bang in as I requested it to be super hot and it met all expectations in terms of spicyness, salt and other spices were well balanced. 5/5 for Chicken tikka masala. Will I order again? I would definitely order again as I know they do read all reviews and work on it and moreover this is one of the best restaurants in Auckland. I think it was just about wrong time or rush hours they had that day. But hey... that’s how popular restaurants need to run fulfilling expectations of customers even when they are super busy as your customers choose your restaurant over others.

We dined in and ordered chicken masala & butter chicken (both come with rice), and Naan bread, all were very tasty. If you ask for additional rice there will be extra charge. Although the restaurant was very quiet (2 other tables only occupied), many takeaway customers come and go while we are having dinner, so the restaurant is relatively busy. However the service was pleasant, and you don't feel waiting for long to getting meal. There are 2 bathroom (1 for female, another one for male), was fairly clean. It serves good South Indian food - dosas and idli and even rawa (semolina) dosa. The masala dosa tasted great. Clean and crisp taste. The masala (the potato and onion filling) was well made too - though I thought it could have a little more of it. The papdums with dips was a great touch in the menu - and they were running a special on that, at half price! The quality of papdums they used was good too - not the poor quality thick ones often found in NZ. The yogurt dip with cucumbers served with the dish was very satisfying. The samosa chaat was pretty good too - just the right portion size, and priced well. The samosa tasted good for a change. The place is located in the Sandringham stretch of shops, and thus parking is a bit of a pain to find close by. It isn't a problem if one is willing to walk for 5 mins. He is friendly, gave good suggestions based on what I wanted, and was a pleasure to interact with. Our party were dining at Mumbaiwala on first table. We arrived outside the restaurant at 4:55pm to ensure we were on time for our 5pm booking. While we waited out in the cold, it was very clear to the woman that worked front of house (FOH) that we were waiting for the restaurant to open. Another couple also dining on first table waited alongside us. Given 6 people are now stood outside looking into the restaurant, the FOH woman still continued to set tables and fluff about. The doors finally opened at 5:03pm, and the FOH woman didn’t even acknowledge us waiting outside in the cold. She just came over and slid the rusty door without making eye contact with anyone. We ordered the prawn kolowada, murgh tikka and pav bhaji to start. These dishes were fine, with the latter being quite nice actually. We sat with our finished entree plates and empty drink glasses for about 18 minutes. The FOH woman came by and randomly removed one empty entree dish from the table, leaving behind everything else. The mains were an absolute disappointment. Everything is just bland! The other reviews regarding this are sadly true! The flesh of the chicken for the murgh karahi was still white. An indication that the protein had just been added to the sauce rather than being cooked within it. The goan fish and prawn curry was even worse. It tasted as if it was watered down. The fish was gross. If you are familiar with South Asian and South East Asian cuisine you will know that basa is frequently used in cooking due to its affordability. Theres a strong smell to basa, and it doesn’t flake like normal fish having a rather spongy texture to it instead. We felt immediately that basa was used here. I think it’s just poor for a restaurant of all places, that has access to wholesale suppliers to resort to using the cheapest fish anyone can pick up at a supermarket. If it was not basa, then whatever was used was not fresh and the “chef” cooked the hell out of those fillets. The murgh makani and sali bolti were alright. Maybe they were pre-made/pre bought curry mixes because they were more palatable than the other curries. The people cooking these dishes need to learn how to balance the spices being used. We were desperate for some salt to sprinkle onto our plates or a bit of lime juice to be squeeze over the curries! Anything to just make the taste pop on our palette rather than landing flat. When waitress arrived at the table to ask if we wanted anything else, my mum was just picking out a long strand of black hair from the murgh karahi. It was entangled around some capsicum and embedded well into the curry. The waitress simply said “oh”, as my mum put the hair inside the empty naan basket. The waitress quickly said she would take the basket away, but there was no apology or acknowledgement of what just happened. The owner has replied to a lot of reviews on here accusing patrons of not speaking up at the time if there were issues. But if us picking out a strand of hair from a curry in front of the waitress doesn’t evoke a reaction, why would we bother pulling aside anyone else to complain?! Given there was no follow up to the hair in the curry, we swiftly proceeded to finish up and pay. We left a lot of the murgh karahi and goan fish and prawn curry behind, these curries were simply inedible. When we went to pay the FOH lady didn’t even ask us how our meals were. The only silver lining here was that we were first table diners so the food was discounted. I would have been irate to pay a bill of $300+ for very average tasting food. It was only upon exit that we realised the FOH lady was the owner, which makes her behaviour even more appalling. The food is lack lustre and staff/service/atmosphere contribute little towards a good dining experience. Take the hint and change absolutely everything about your restaurant.

We had the Butter Chicken, Lamb Saagwala, Balti Dum Goat and Dhal. All the above tasted really good but unfortunately the curry lacked any meat. We had to share between 4 people at our table and we had enough for 1 meat each from each of the mains. The garlic naan looked good, full of garlic but couldn't taste it. Not sure if this is a good thing or not but once again the Naan was nice but just disappointed I couldn't taste any garlic taste with the amount of garlic they sprinkled on the naan. Overall food was tasty, service was great (except the place could do with more light, I get ambience but it was just too dark for my liking). Disappointed with the serving content of the mains, one piece of meat each to share between 4 people is not great! Was it worth the $70pp price tag? No Ordering a la carte instead of a set menu may be a better option next time.

It turned out to be the best decision. Customer service was too good and staff ensured they were checking in, cleaned the tables and most importantly served with love. We tried the set menu and every dish was unique. The Tabak maaz as a starter stood out. The lamb was soo tender that it was falling off the bone. Ruby kofta is a unique disk combining the vibrant colour of the beet with the juicy paneer making it melt in your mouth. Finishing off with the Tres leches dessert is no doubt the cherry on the cake. I loved the original concept and enjoyed my meals there. I am truly delighted to say, things are still fantastic. My Son and I stopped by for lunch on a Saturday and after some consideration decided on their set menu which consists of lamb tacos with an Indian spices twist, and a choice of Tandoori Paneer, Charred Fish or Chicken. We went with the Chicken and Fish. The tacos were something different, but entirely In a good way. Tender lamb cigars on some beautiful naan and a balanced but delicious mix of sauces. I can honestly say that the flat breads (naan) and fries with truffle oil and a mix of Indian spices, served with a chilli mayo, were some of, if not THE best I have had in years. My mouth is watering remembering the fries in particular. The fish had a lovely coconut sauce with Indian spices, the fish was a decent portion and was nicely cooked. It had a component of acidity I didn't love but overall it was a nice dish. The chicken was done with a sauce I am unsure how to describe but my son and I loved the combination of gently charred chicken cooked and still tender, with the sauce. Service was attentive and it's a nice place to spend an hour. It was a shame it wasn't busier, it certainly deserves to be. It was an excellent lunch and I'll be back at some stage, great value at 40 per person.

The South Indian food here that we had on this occasion was excellent. Entrees here are also great, they only thing I found weird was big potatoes in chicken and fish entrees. They got our order wrong at times but we’re more than happy to accomodate it. Best to book ahead for this place as it gets very busy and they did seem hard pressed to serve everyone on time but managed it well.
