Bathrooms are located at the visitor center with modern amenities. Plenty of parking. Staff is extremely helpful and does a great job providing information. Tours are great and informative with tours leaving every 15 minutes. We were there during the shoulder season, so it was not too crowded. There are three properties to visit, 4 if you include Prince Cottage which is their restaurant a definite must try. There are also walking and bike / carriage paths to visit and take in the island scenery. Be advised that the island is on Atlantic time. Our phones did not switch over from Eastern until we were further north on the Island so pay close attention if you are attending events at a specific time. There are clocks in the visitor center if you need to acclimate. The gift shop has a great selection of books on the Roosevelt family as well.

Going through Customs at Lubec was painless and the park is anshort way across the border with ample parking. The information center is very well maintained and staffed. I got a map of the grounds and one of Campobello Island and used the very clean restroom. No pets except service animals are allowed in any of the buildings so we took turns minding our maltipoo and taking the 30 minute tour of the Roosevelt cottage. Tours are every 15 minutes so it was easy to get in 2 consecutive tours. It was very interesting and the guide was well informed and very likeable. I wandered the grounds and went down to the boat dock while waiting my turn for the tour. There are several other buildings and cottages as well. We had lunch at the Prince Cafe just down the lawn from the Roosevelt Cottage, very good food and ample servings. We sat outside on the veranda with our dog and ate with a lovely view. Service was very good and prices reasonable.

The gentleman who is giving the tours currently worked here for six years, so he has first hand experience in how the smoking of the herring and sardines was done. Apparently this was the last operating smokehouse in the United States and it closed in the early 90s due to the FDA requiring them to remove the enterals of fish in the beginning of the process, rather than the end, which this was not set up to do. There was also a building that used to be across the river and it floated away during a high tide. Another building that was attached to the current museum was also lost a few years ago during a bad winter storm. They are currently trying to raise money to lift up the buildings several feet higher, as two of them flood as much as a foot of water during extreme high tides, so they are also at risk of collapse or floating away. Inside you'll find posters with information on how the mackerel were caught, strung onto rods for smoking, smoked (for two months!), then taken down for processing and packaging. There used to be smokers and canneries all over Maine, but this is a one of a kind now, despite being a booming industry for so long. There are lots of trails and beautiful scenery all around. The new Prince Cafe is simply delightful and filled with wonderful foods and the prices aren't bad at all. There are two teas one is free and is in the morning. II t is in the afternoon and at this time cost $14 a person. At the end of the tea there is a Memento to take home with you.

I came here from the Downeast Boat Charter Whale Watch in Lubec. The best time to come is during low tide. The pools were just getting started when we arrived, but we were still able to see many of the "pigglets". Apparently Old Sow got the name due to the sucking sound the whirlpool makes and reminded people of a pig. That's what the smaller ones are called pigglets! Old Sow is also the most geologically significant whirlpool in the east, and at it's deepest point, is over 400 feet deep. Crazy! The whirlpools, when very dramatic, may have as much as a six foot difference from the top of the bottom of the spiral as well.
