It has big collections of his painting about all American life in his periods. He was a great portrait painter too. Anyway I learned it elsewhere that his life was not as happy as he portray in his paintings because if the painting was not happy one the journal with rejected it. It was my second visit here. The last time was nearly 10 years ago.

We heard part of the guided tour and it was so informative and contained lots of details; would recommend that if that is what you like. I love that they have a late 2pm mass. The gift shop is quaint and has thoughtful keepsakes. A very large grounds that I have not even had the chance to walk about yet. Weekdays seemed nicer and I could park along the road but it gets crowded in there when they have buses come in, I ended up in basement watching on the tv first time I went as I couldn’t take the crowds of bus loads of Philippines. The grounds are spacious and peaceful. The Stations of the Cross are one of the best elements here. I was impressed and very happy the the sculptor included Simon in the stations beyond the fifth (it's not often he is seen after his station). The chapel is gorgeous and quite cozy. We were there a few days before Divine Mercy Sunday and it was "crowded," although I'm sure it's nothing compared to what they were expecting - but they seemed well prepared. After Mass the Novena begins (with Exposition). There was a reflection given during this time which was beautiful, but felt long (but it was particularly warm when we were there, in a packed space which makes everything feel longer), but it was a beautiful time spent with the Lord and the Universal Church in praying the Novena. Once the Novena ended, the space cleared out pretty quickly (as the Shrine itself was closing not much later). It was then when you could really admire and appreciate the beauty of the space, take in the windows, and venerate some of the relics. It is definitely worth visiting and spending some time in prayer. If you're looking for Catholic gifts, their shop is great, perhaps rivaled only by the Basilica in DC.

And the last bit of the trail is downhill and had a weird angle and my body didn’t quite know how to adjust itself into an upright position. But I will say that trail had some of the most beautiful sites and views just of the forest alone. We came across a cool waterfall and so many areas where it just made you feel like you were either in a magical forest or on an adventure to seek out fairies or dragons. Some of the rock formations were amazing, including one area that had a giant rock with ferns on it that looked like it was floating. The photos I took could not do it justice. The colors didn’t come out the way your eyes see them, and the views just could not be matched with the camera. I thought I was dying. But it was totally worth it. I’ll probably go on a less strenuous hike for my next one until I work back up to it though lol.

Our party was all quite hungry after spending the morning at the local book sale and walking around so we stopped into this cafe for lunch. The main inn -first floor room with lots off light and freshness. Food - the absolute best turkey stuffing and cranberry sandwich you could ask for. This was take out which we enjoyed in our room. Staff -Lillian greeted us with a personalized message that added to our wonderful experience. Atmosphere - dated and for good reason. Slow down and enjoy the views from the front porch just as you would wish for during your chaotic days back home. Much of the formal public spaces are dark and full of people having a good time but there are smaller, hidden, bright common spaces to enjoy. Consequently, the side tables and porch tables always had empty glasses and napkins that had not been cleared away for long stretches of time, not quickly, as you would find in other hotels of a similar price point. You will be paying a small preservation fee, which I think is appropriate as the hotel seems to be managed independently and I think that is better than going corporate. The pool deck was nicer than I expected from the photos. The restaurant staff really hustles and tries to create a quality experience. I imagine guests have a wide variety of taste preferences and expectations, as you can see from the reviews. But I enjoyed everything I ate at both dinner and breakfast and it was possible to eat from a variety of price points. We were looking forward to finally staying at that inn, after decades of driving past it. But I left feeling flustered with a sense of having a diminished experience—not because of the stay but because of my departing invoice. It was not clearly or logically labeled, which confused me *and* the front desk staff who gave plausible but inaccurate explanations about a charge I had queried on the way out. (It actually turned out to be a credit when I used a spreadsheet at home to sort things out, but I found other errors that resulted in a small overcharge.) Part of this confusion stemmed from the reservation process, which was a little rocky and I did not get the room I thought I reserved, but it was fine. My reason for the two stars is that no one called to talk about the problem as promised, and after a week, I just figured it out myself and sent an email. Two weeks have gone by and I just sent a follow up email so we’ll see…. If you go, you could have a wonderful time, just frame your expectations.

A very clean and nicely isolated heated outdoor pool (big) and jacuzzi which were heavenly in sub-40 degree winds and open until 10. Our rooms were similar in decoration and maybe had some cosmetic imperfections - and the entire “The Shining” vibe may not be for everyone. but If You Know You Know – the Red Lion is way more interesting than scary and it’s also cleaner and friendlier than some of the reviews indicate.
