The flat white, so often a treacherous undertaking in distant lands, was here executed with aplomb. The eggs were properly runny, a small triumph, and the chicken was moist and well cooked. I should have liked a touch more basting with herbs and spices to elevate its flavour, though it was nonetheless agreeable. The establishment itself is most pleasant, perched with a view of the surf where one may sit and watch the waves break upon the shore. The seating arrangements are varied, from floor-level pods to conventional tables, each furnished with a large fan that kept the air moving in the tropical heat. The flies, persistent though they were, must be regarded as part of the natural order and no fault of the house. To one side lies a small shop, not the usual parade of gaudy trifles but a collection of curiosities and surf attire of rather more character than the generic offerings along the high street. Salty Swamis, in sum, provided an experience both civilised and restorative, a place where one might pause, refresh, and take comfort in the knowledge that even in the far reaches of the island, quality and taste are not only possible but assured.

Beautiful gardens/ common space Good central location. We were able to check in slightly early. Be warned, there is a 4% card charge (they don’t tell you until after you have paid). For a stay that cost over $1000 for 3 nights this was a big expense we really didn’t need. There is a cash point opposite we would recommend using instead. Rooms do not get cleaned during your stay, which is pretty ridiculous given the location and price. At another hotel for a similar price we stayed at had a morning refresh as well as a turn down service. It isn’t the luxury stay it is advertising itself as. The rooms are dirty before you stay. When we got inside, it was covered in insect and animal poo - it was obvious the room hadn’t been cleaned on the day we arrived. The fridge looked like it had never had a clean. The sheets had dirt marks all over them. We booked the room with the bathtub. The water runs so slowly (would take 1hr and a half to fill) and the plug drains at the same time so not worth the additional money. The bath was also dirty. Purely for aesthetic. We did have air con but don’t think it works properly - needed the fan on to get any sort of air movement. There was construction happening right opposite our villa inside the hotel and the times of day were unpredictable - we seemed to keep arriving back at the villa as they were doing construction. We also stayed during season and paid a lot for the room so we are amazed this was happening to be honest. Breakfast was good but you get a limited version of their menu. One day my breakfast was burnt unfortunately. Owners are rude - when we first arrived we were asked where we had been, which the woman snubbed and basically told us we shouldn’t have bothered going to Yala. We came for our honeymoon and had put a lot of research into where to go. On the owners - they are hanging around alot in the common spaces and the staff seem to run around after them. Having read some other poor reviews, we’d agree they are rude as we also overheard them snubbing another families route around Sri Lanka too. To be honest we have never been more disappointed by a hotel. Given the price we paid for 3 nights, we (wrongly) assumed this would be more on the side of luxury, but it actually felt like we were camping in a dirty room. Some advice to the owners : spend more time looking after your rooms and guests then lounging around sat on your phones and laptops marketing the hotel as something it isn’t. Avoid at all costs, we wished we had read the reviews more thoroughly before booking.

It was going to be a bit of a treat for us as we were doing Sri Lanka on a medium budget. The food was decent, definitely nothing to write home about, but to be fair it was reasonable. It took me back to the chilled vibes that Thailand had 20 years back. Tucked away from the main drag down a narrow road is an escape into peace. Basic but comfortable rooms. No tv, but hot showers, air con, and your own space set in lush gardens. Breakfast is included everyday and offers a number of choices. The location is set back off the main road which makes for a more peaceful stay whilst only being 5 min walk from the town. The back lanes into the village are peaceful and beautiful and you have great coffee shops right round the corner. The breakfast is PHENOMENAL. The muesli is unlike any muesli I’ve ever had haha it’s delicious. All the menu items are epic. I booked a 6 day trip initially and extended my stay at ESC to 6 WEEKS! That says it all. I’ve left Sri Lanka with fond memories and friends for life from East Surf Cabanas.

First off our original room that we booked was not the one provided. And it was filthy, dirty beds, no bed linen, flooded shower clogged with gunk and hair, so was unusable. It was a joke of a room, literally the sink had just a hole to the floor, and no plumbing so you brushed your teeth and it would go right through the sink to the floor. The straw that broke the camels back was as others have mentioned, the loud parties. We had no forewarning this would happen and were not advised when we booked or when we checked in. We got home from dinner and there was a huge queue of people down the road waiting to be let into our hotel by bouncers who wanted to charge us to enter our own hotel! When we asked what was going on they said they have a big party tonight but it should be over at 5am so not a problem?!?!?!? The music was over 100 decibels in our room, we checked. The whole room was shaking and the windows were shaking and there was no way we would be able to sleep. Absolute joke. The manager was completely unapologetic and didn’t care. To not be advised of this in advance is absolutely ridiculous. So with this all in mind I would not even recommend this place to an enemy.

After seeing some positive reviews on Google we decided to give it a go as the price was reasonable and it had a pool. Overall the room was fine, very basic but expected for the price. The curtains however were quite see through, offering no privacy. The room was fairly clean but did unfortunately find a used contact lens on the bedside table. A/c is good but no remote so can’t adjust the temperature. Did get quite cold at night but when the A/C was off it got very hot quickly. Upon arrival we were greeted by a man, who showed us our booking on his phone and then told us our room number. No information was given which would have been helpful. The rest of the staff we came across were also not helpful and not interested. We felt like an inconvenience asking and didn’t feel welcome. We booked three nights, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. On Sunday night we were in bed quite early, around 9am. Music started around then was blasting and the walls were shaking. There was clearly a party going on which we didn’t know about. It was for tourists as we could see foreigners entering the gate from our window. The lack of communication around this was disappointing, some forewarning would have been nice. The music then lasted until 5am and therefore we got very little sleep during this time. Even my earplugs didn’t help. The next morning we asked the man at reception if every night there was a party and he said that it was only on Sundays. So something to note if you are planning to come and wanting some sleep. The pool area was very nice. A little dirty after the party on Sunday but soon cleaned up. One day there was a man putting chemicals in the pool so it is looked after. Sun loungers are a little uncomfortable but a nice area to relax and chill out. We spent a lot of time around the pool, having it to ourselves most of the time. There was a bar/restaurant area next to the pool. We tried one day to get some drinks but no one was there and when we asked reception he was vague. At first he said it wasn’t opening today and then said it would open at 3pm. On our second day, after half an hour of asking around, we were able to get milkshakes, which were tasty. The menu they showed us was very limited. However can’t comment on food as we ate out in Arugam Bay every time. The location was about a 10 min walk to the beach and restaurants in the town which we didn’t mind at all. We usually walked in and got a tuk tuk back so we weren’t walking along the main road in the dark. A tuk tuk cost about 500 LKR from the town to the hotel. Overall I wouldn’t recommend staying here. There are better places to stay closer to the action. Even though the pool is nice, we didn’t feel welcome and even considered finding somewhere else to stay.
