The George is in a lovely situation beside the River Avon and close to the historic bridge. Shame about the food. Trout paté had a sticky consistency, it was bland and did not taste of trout, nor indeed of anything much. It was served with a couple of slices of slightly stale bread. Tomato soup with basil sounded enticing, but when it eventually arrived it was a yellow soup. On asking we were told the kitchen had run out of tomato soup so we had been given a mixed vegetable soup. There was no apology for the substitution, nor had there been any check beforehand that we were happy to have this different soup. The 'Korean bowl' had a base of sticky rice which seemed to have been fried into glutinous lumps. This was topped with a mince mixture that included bits of explosive chilli flavour. Quite weird: one mouthful was not spicy, the next unpleasantly hot. Service was leisurely. After waiting about 30 minutes we asked a passing waiter if our order had been forgotten. We were assured not, there was a 40 minute wait because they were so busy (it seemed about half full to me). The food eventually arrived about 35 minutes after ordering, and our second course arrived after another 35 minutes. (Heard in passing: someone complained about being served food on a dirty plate. The waiter was told the way to deal with this was to return it to the kitchen, wash the plate, then put the food back on it to give it back to the customer. Not the best approach, in my opinion.) Obviously overall pretty good, but going to opt for the 4 star overall. It is a very tucked away and cute pub, oozing with character inside and out. Staff are super friendly and accommodating and have sat in the more bar sort of area rather than the restaurant. Sort of lent a more relaxed and ambient atmosphere, especially because we were sporting a newborn. The drink selection is really solid. The Malbec was very agreeable, and Timothy Taylor is always a welcome sight! The menu is equally really solid. Loads of choice with a smattering of specials on the wall with a pizza menu. If I had to describe the food, I would certainly say it was more of a homemade feel. Not ever going to get the pulse racing, but really satisfying. My partner opted for the vegetarian pizza both visits, receiving a different sort of veggie pizza each time (first one was epic, piled up with raw crunchy veg, with the second a more disappointing damp version). I went for the gammon, egg and chips first time and sampled the burger the second time. The gammon and chips was absolutely bang on, super crispy chips and delicious gammon. The burger did sadly disappoint a bit - although the bacon and cheese was good, it was piled with iceberg lettuce and tomato which was a bit 1990s burger topping. I will however say that it is VERY rare you see trifle on a dessert menu, so credit there for sure (and yes it was absolutely lovely!). We are definitely going to return because I'm keen to sample more of the menu and the price of the menu is really reasonable. Secretly looking forward to more home made magic!

I had the garlic mushrooms as a starter (fantastic) , the wife had a prawn cocktail ( tipical sixtys ) she really enjoyed it. Main course wife had a smaller portion of fish & cips with peas, I had the larger beef lasagne it was fantastic would recomend this pub as aplace to eat which I will be doing next year at the autojumble. Lovely pub near fordingbridge. Apparently they got to the finalist for GREAT PUB 2022 competition. We came from London to visit new forest for this weekend. The food served was so good portion and very tasty. You can tell from their potato chips that everything is made from fresh. We then sat outside in the cold as had come a long way with my sister and her baby so it was too late to change location as the baby needed feeding by the time we settled outside. Most of the staff were as accommodating as they could be. The manager (I assume) told me she had told me on the phone about how tight it was. I don't debate that, but she shouldn't have said it was accessible. It 100% is NOT suitable for wheelchair users. Which is completely okay. It's a 16th century building, it can't be changed. I just think had she been more transparent with me on the phone I'd have saved myself a lot of embarrassment, pain and stress. I didn't appreciate how she made out she had told me it wasn't suitable when we spoke on the phone. As someone who has been a wheelchair user a long time, I would never have proceeded to book a table had I not felt 100% assured of the accessibility of the place. Thankfully the food was delicious and came out fast. The parking unfortunately let it down too. So many 4x4's crammed in, almost couldn't get the wheelchair in and out of the boot because of the cramped space. We also had to wait a while to leave as there was so many cars going in and out and getting stuck. I really don't complain often about things but I felt so utterly embarrassed today in front of a pub full of increasingly more irate people. Getting stuck like that and then having my sister and her baby turn up to get the buggy stuck too... Beautiful pub, beautiful food but definitely not suitable for wheelchairs. At all.

At that time there was a bar menu and we each had a sandwich and a pint, the place was lively and we enjoyed ourselves despite noisy children. Our return visit was awful. We walked into the bar area and no staff (the barman was changing a barrel but this wasn't relayed to us when I went to the restaurant side to find a member of staff). Lifeless and souless. The customers comprised a family with a noisy barking dog who thankfully left and a chap sat by the fire. I asked for a bar menu and the reply was "we don't have one but we have a restaurant menu". I scanned it and thought at nearly £30 per dish for a main course....no thank you. I went back to the bar area and mum spotted that there was 'soup of the day' being advertised which was being served with a toastie (mum would have the soup and I would have the toasty). I then ordered 2 halfs of Flack Manor's Romsey Gold. I set up a tab and the 2 halfs came to £7... you do the per-pint maths. Far too expensive, even by London prices and this is only 4% ABV. Even Molson Coors Blue Moon 5.4% is only £6.80 in establishments near to this place, and is of far superior quality. The few (and young) staff present needed more experience in working in a bar and being able to offer banter with customers and the lack of any atmosphere caused me to cancelled our food order, pay for our drinks and leave. It was the first time I have ever cancelled a food order in my life. I'm unsure who owns this place and whether it is part of Lord Montague's empire. If you're wanting an up-market meal then yes, this would be perfect, eating in the restaurant. But for what should be a lively bar with its own menu then please don't bother. You will be disappointed. This place has so much potential but is desperately lacking personality. Maybe it relies to much on its location, the seasonal tourists and the fact that there is no other bar in the village. Running a bar with hotel and restaurant staff doesn't work.

We were in the area and considering staying at Chewton Glen so thought we’d check it out for dinner. I had a rib eye steak (which I’ve probably had too much of in my life!) and honestly it was awful - because it had zero caramelisation it tasted of a slightly metallic raw meat taste. I alerted the manager who was embarrassed and apologetic and they replaced with lamb chops which were ok, but left the steak there for 15 minutes rather than take it away and work out what went wrong which was a bit strange. By the time I ate everyone else had finished which is never ideal. My wife had the posh fish sandwich but the fish doesn’t fit inside the small baguette which was a bit bizarre. And our child’s pizza had undercooked dough. Combined with the waitress who kept walking past looking at our table with finished plates and empty drinks and then went and stood in the corner rather than clearing them (the manager noticed this strange exchange and came and cleared things to his credit)…it was all rather strange. It has actually put us off staying at CG which itself is beautiful.

The staff however didn’t smile throughout our time there, and made us feel like we were a bit of a burden just wanting to grab some lunch! The food is a fantastic example of vegan food, people assume that because it’s vegan it is often lesser in some way but these dishes are perfectly crafted to leave you feeling full and satisfied. I’d never have even thought to put these ingredients together or cashew in my mac and cheese but wow so tasty. When I contacted Chewton Glen spa they were booked to, but offered me day passes for the spa facilities which was perfect and gave us exactly what I asked for. In desperation and hoping not to be in the dog house for the remainder of the year, I called Chewton Glen in the hope they could move the day for me. The day was amazing, food was fantastic, staff were all wonderful and facilities fantastic. The hotel is in a wonderful location. Very easy central access to the whole new forest with walks on the doorstep (albeit a short drive away). The town of brockenhurst is very nearby and walkable with restaurants and shops. The hotel itself looks wonderful and picturesque. The lobby and all restaurant areas are decorated to a high standard. The rooms felt modern and comfortable, with the exception of the bathroom which was ever so slightly dated and could've felt more high end in keeping with the rest of the room. We chose to do afternoon tea and a 60minute treatment for two separately. Afternoon tea was delicious and Kseniia looked after us wonderfully! Our 60 minute massages were with Tida and Onsri who were two women who can work miracles. We left floating as our bodies had been taken to heaven and back again within the 60 minutes. The hotel itself is having renovations and it’s not easy to navigate where reception is if it’s your first visit. There were just a few vegan options, but the majority of the items all involved animal-derived ingredients. The venue is superb, based in a delightful location and with great facilities. The spa is outstanding with a great pool, steam room and outside hot tubs. The food was of a high standard and beautifully presented. The rooms were luxurious with all the amenities that you’d expect from a hotel of this standard and like the rest of the hotel scrupulously clean. Finally the best part of the hotel were the staff. We popped into the restaurant for some breakfast but didn’t want anything too heavy as we were due to have a late lunch in the spa. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and we felt very looked after. The spa itself was wonderful, the treatments were relaxing and the therapists took great care of us. The spa facilities were lovely, we had a sunny day so we were able to enjoy the hot tubs outside, with a glass of Prosecco. Lunch options were plenty and the food was delicious, again we were able to enjoy this outside due to the weather. All in all, we had a lovely day and will be returning! I can’t speak for the rooms, as we didn’t stay but the hotel itself was beautiful, the restaurant had lovely views over the fields and there is plenty of parking.

The staff are consistently very helpful and understanding and the facilities for families are just right. You get a session per day in The Den, where brilliant and qualified carers will look after your kids for a couple of hours, so you have a break from parenting. The spa is right next door to The Den, so you can drop your kids off and get a full two hours of relaxation there per day. (If you want any treatments or a massage, though, I'd advise booking that in advance.) The spa is great, with a pool, outdoor hot-tubs, sauna, etc. and lovely views across the fields where horses are running around. My kids worked out quite quickly that the best toys, games and activities for them were in The Den, so were very happy to go there when we dropped them off. The food is also great: there's an informal restaurant area which is great for eating with young kids, and a more formal restaurant area which we preferred going after they're in bed. (You can borrow Leap Frog video monitors from reception so you can keep an eye on them when you're down in the restaurant - they work on the hotel wifi so range isn't a consideration.) There is much to do in the local area as well; we particularly enjoyed renting bikes and exploring the New Forest a bit. Having stayed in the likes of the Grove, I believe part of the same company, shame they don’t seem to offer the same level of training for this hotel. We were also informed at the bar that the hot water pipe had burst. The manager said someone was coming to fix it. Coffee machine makes cold coffee, which must be taken from the shower as that only “spat out” boiling water. Children screaming and running around from 6am until 9pm to the point where I had to go outside my room, and tell them to stop. Totally get it’s a family hotel, but people are paying to relax and chill and we don’t expect playground antics outside all the bedrooms.(and we have children but wouldn’t allow this kind of behaviour) Had a spa treatment, not so much as offered a glass of water on entering, and the massage was at best 4/10 and I have weekly massages so I’m not new to them. The girl who seemed very nice and sweet was very robotic, my advice, she needs more training and role playing to adapt to dealing with different customer scenarios and don’t treat everyone the same. I’ve got to say I’m highly disappointed with the entire experience. We most definitely won’t be back to this hotel although we do come to the new forest every 6 months.

We have previously stayed at moonfleet and the room was much cleaner and bigger. The changing mat provided had poo on it which I had to clean off, there was dust all over the room, the side of the sink was flirty etc Facilities as the previous reviews are great such as the spa and the Den. At the restaurants high chairs and baby seats are available, although they could definitely do with more as there were a few occasions families were waiting for one to be made available. Similarly where the website states bugaboo pram is available...you can't actually reserve it, so there is no guarantee you arrive and there will be one available for you - which means you have to bring your pram anyway! Breakfast options were great although on a fair few occasions for our coffee and hot breakfast orders were incorrect...which left us waiting. Very strange on the our last day were seated elsewhere without explanation( and can I add isolated too) which meant we had to keep getting up to call someone and come down for the food. Vegetarian options for dinner is limited, basically just burger which is £22, rather steep! Plus meant we had to leave the hotel to rush back for the activities in the evening for our daughter and feed time for our son! Lastly we went for our 10th anniversary, however, not even one staff member acknowledged this despite me seeing this on their paper ( not asking for flowers, chocolates etc just acknowledgement) where as I noticed others coming for birthdays etc were....so not sure why we were not! We made the most of it and our daughter really enjoyed herself, it's a great place for kids!

When we walked into the hotel, we were greeted by a pleasant man on reception, Jamie. We were served by Katie who had a very warm welcoming way about her. She explained the options to us and as we had already had lunch we opted for coffee and cake. The coffee and walnut cake was amazing. The room we had was good and was initially very pleased - even despite a noticeable strong smell of bleach in the bathroom. Overnight however, the bleach smell faded and the bathroom smelt like a sewer and became so bad that we didn't/couldn't use the toilet in the morning and instead used the communal toilets downstairs. Whilst that was frustrating, and I understand that things can go wrong, it was the response to the feedback that was not excusable. We reported it to a lady on reception on check out who seemed completely disinterested in anything other than getting us to pay our bill for dinner the previous night. I asked her to come and see for herself on two occasions but declined. The manager was called but never arrived and a waitress who was acting as duty manager was sent instead, who said the manager would call us - I offered for her to come and see what the complaint was about but she too declined, stating that they "believed us". At this point it was clear they were either aware of the smell or quite simply didn't care. The phone call promised never came. We booked through Expedia, who we were told attempted to contact management on a couple of occasions on our behalf a week or so after, but they too were unable to make any progress. Thankfully Expedia applied some customer service skills and have provided us with compensation but nothing was ever offered by anyone at the hotel by way of any kind of apology or gesture of goodwill.
