I had one of the most disappointing and upsetting dining experiences here. My friend and I, both East Asian and long-term residents in Europe, visited this restaurant with high expectations and ordered the First Class seafood platter along with half a crab. A French-speaking white gentleman sat at the table next to us about ten minutes after we arrived and ordered the exact same platter. To our shock, his platter was served promptly and looked exceptionally fresh and high-quality—exactly what we expected. Yet ours arrived at least ten minutes later, and the difference in quality was blatant and disheartening: The oysters were shrunken and dried around the edges. The cooked prawns were not only missing one (only 3 instead of 4) but all had their heads broken off. The sea snails were not fresh, and most had broken or missing lids. This did not reflect the standard of a First Class platter by any means. While waiters were checking in with other tables about their meals, no one came to check on us throughout our meal. When I finally had the chance to raise my concern while paying, I was told the seafood had been cooked fresh that morning. I pointed out the poor presentation and the missing prawn, and only then did they bring over three new, pristine prawns—not four. Clearly, they had better quality seafood available, but chose not to serve it to us. I can’t help but feel this was a case of racial discrimination, where the quality of our food and service was noticeably inferior simply because of our Asian appearance. After the meal, I experienced lingering nausea and stomach discomfort as we walked around the Old Market and the beach. I genuinely feared that I would end up in hospital on the first day of my trip. Now back in the UK, I’ve finally had time to write this review.
