About ⅓ is inside, ⅓ in a “covered tent” and another ⅓ on the “patio” (err…sidewalk?) beside the parking lot. Despite sitting on the patio, the weather Gods cooperated and it felt quite comfortable. I originally ordered the “regular” soft shell crab roll from the menu, but the waitress mentioned they had “fresh crab” off the special menu, and I simply said “sure.” In hindsight, I should have asked about the price but I never would have expected it to be double! The worst part, it didn’t taste anything special. The lettuce conflicted with the crab that didn’t taste particularly fresh, and it really didn’t taste much better than something from a Japanese supermarket. The experience is mediocre at best for this price range. The owner is very energetic and friendly and service staff was very professional, but those are the only positives. I must say the fish quality and cuts were not very good at all. I ordered Chirashi tokusen and my wife ordered a sushi platter. FIsh cutting was not clean with jagged edges, many pieces tasted bland or flavorless (either aged improperly or poor quality fish), chutoro was full of sinu, ikura was over marinated, crab leg meat were actually fishy and tasted “old”, portions were small. I upgraded to Hokkaido uni which tasted very good, but again for 16 dollars extra for 1 single piece I expected more generous portion for customers. OVerall I have the feeling that the restaurant is trying to squeeze profits rather than providing a great dining experience, especially with respect to the quality of the fish. There is a mandatory 20% service fee which is not egregious for La jolla but why call it a tip at that point if it’s not optional and proportional to the service provided? Granted service for us was great and I would have tipped 20+% anyways, but having it mandatory I think is in bad taste, pretty much like a price hike on all items on the menu by 20%. If someone didn’t like the service I could imagine this being a bad situation. I cannot believe so many people consider this to be good sushi. The portions were super overwhelming and make me feel like the quality of ingredients and fish are not up to standard. They literally overloaded these rolls with portions of the masago/fish/cream cheese/rice, and ridiculous knife cuts of lemon that just destroyed the rolls. The roll with lemon was so spicy it was inedible. It was like the white fish was soaked in jalopenos/peppers/etc for so long, the level of heat combined with other peppers within the roll was total overkill. I ate one piece and was done. The lemon was cut so thick the rind was as bitter and overpowering. We ordered 4 rolls along with miso soups and spicy edamame. All were epic failures. Not one thing was truly edible, except for my drink which then turned out to be in a very dirty plastic cup. Beyond the food issues, we were sat in an odd area and didn’t get even the most basic of things (like soy sauce, until we asked for it once the rolls were delivered and it was still not at the table. But the rolls were obviously pre-made as the tempura parts were no longer crispy, AT ALL. Actually soggy and cold and the soft shell crab was a terrifying color so I was too afraid to eat more than the one bite. Bitter and definitely not fresh. The edamame was more like bbq sauce and had a quite strange taste profile. The 4 rolls we ordered all came out within like 5 mins of ordering, so there’s physically no way with how busy the restaurant was that they could’ve rolled them fresh. Sadly, I have nothing positive to say and 100% regret the visit to this restaurant. I should’ve known by the name as the word association is clearly not a positive connection given their menu focusing on fish… It also really sucks to spend nearly $100 on food you can’t and won’t consume. Out of courtesy, we packed to take home, then just threw it all away. We didn’t want to cause a scene in the restaurant, get sick, or appear as though we expected a free meal. I’ll say again, it was BEYOND uncomfortable. Lastly, the wasabi would not even blend into the soy sauce. When I tell you this was like chewed gum,… I basically gave up on any positive expectation at that point. We had to request the wasabi/ginger as well as it was not provided freely. We live far away and don’t visit often but we were so disappointed in the food and service this time. We will never return. The fish was not high quality and didn’t taste good. The salmon looked really bad. We ended up leaving 2 rolls and 6 salmon nigiri on the table (along with my daughter’s ramen because she was worried to eat it.) None of these things were edible. Their solution to the poor quality food was to remove one roll. We paid over $80 to leave most of our food on the table. We did eat a few pieces of yellowtail and tuna nigiri which were not excellent but were far more edible than the salmon and the rolls. The service was not good, although the server was nice. Only complaint was the carrots still being hard like it was raw. She thought it was sweet potato and took a huge front bite, only to find out she couldn’t break into it with her dentures. The broccoli was steamed perfectly. The Chuck Norris roll was delicious. It was really rich and creamy. The crawfish was added bonus. Plus this roll was baked. I really like this place.
