Aachen

Aachen is a spa city near Germany’s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Aachen Cathedral was founded around 800 A.D. and a Gothic chancel was added later. Its Domschatzkammer (treasury) has medieval artifacts including the shrine of Charlemagne, who was buried here in 814 A.D. Nearby is the baroque town hall, Aachener Rathaus, with 19th-century frescoes. Sulfurous water fills the fountains of Elisenbrunnen.

Sights & Landmarks
Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Imperial Cathedral or the Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle, is a significant landmark and one of Europe's oldest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral features Charlemagne's impressive octagonal chapel and houses various historic artifacts such as a candelabrum from Frederick Barbarossa and Charlemagne's marble throne. It is also the final resting place of Charlemagne, known as the Father of Europe for unifying Western Europe.
Absolutely gorgeous. Smaller than cathedrals in other areas but the mosaic ceiling is magnificent. Walks and floor are marble or a similar rock, entire place is beautiful, and the story of how it was built is fun to hear!

If you can do take a moment to stop and admire this cathedral inside and out. It’s particularly beautiful when seen lit up in the evening. If you fancy attending gluten and dairy free patisserie, the cafe opposite - Isabella - in the main square is pricey but delicious

Constructed at the turn of the 9th century, the Palatine Chapel in Aachen stands as a testament to the ambition and legacy of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor. Originally conceived as the centerpiece of his imperial palace complex, the chapel was designed not only as a place of worship but also as a powerful symbol of his newly established empire's grandeur and a physical representation of the a "new Rome". Its architectural brilliance lies in its unique fusion of classical, Byzantine, and Carolingian elements.

Visiting Aachen Cathedral is like stepping into the heart of European history. As soon as you walk in, the scale and grandeur hit you — soaring ceilings, intricate mosaics, and that unmistakable sense of centuries pressing down in the best possible way. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason. Its mix of Carolingian, Gothic, and Baroque architecture feels like a living timeline. The Palatine Chapel, with its golden mosaics and octagonal dome, is breathtaking — especially when sunlight streams in and makes the colors glow like liquid gold. One of the highlights is the Imperial Throne of Charlemagne, where history literally sits before you. Imagine emperors being crowned here; it’s humbling and kind of surreal. The cathedral treasury is also incredible — relics, chalices, and artifacts that tell stories you won’t find in guidebooks. Accessibility is good, though it can get crowded, especially during weekends or special services. That said, the quiet corners and chapels give you space to reflect, take photos, or just marvel at the centuries-old craftsmanship. If you pay €1 you can take photos and videos.
Ronnie P — Google review
The cathedral was built in 796, one of the oldest cathedral in Europe, belongs to the first 12 World Heritage Sites lister by UNESCO. This cathedral is most famous for being the resting place of Charlemagne - the emperor who defined the shape and character of medieval Europe. Here is also the coronation church of 31 German kings from 936 to 1531. The cathedral is a blend of history of architechture and decoration: Carolingian, Byzantine, Gothic, Neo-gothic, Baroque. Every detail is amazing
Ho T — Google review
It’s a magnificent piece, the top of the line early medieval architecture. And in great shape there is also not too many people it’s in the center of Aachen must go for that area

Most unusual- keeps the look of the old times. A very beautiful cathedral a lot out of the main path.

didn't get time to go inside but it's a great place to sit and look at the stunning architecture, the town is nice and the sandwiches from one of the many coffee shops was great, really enjoyed the place.

The Elisenbrunnen is a neoclassical pavilion built in the early 19th century to showcase Aachen's magical mineral springs, which were believed to have health benefits. Named after Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria, this iconic structure features two sulfurous drinking fountains and is a popular attraction in the city. Visitors can also explore other nearby landmarks such as the cathedral, town hall, Couven Museum, and Casino Aachen.
An elegant neoclassical building which was built in 1827, inside there is 2 drinking fountain which connect to the thermo spring. Walk in the building you may smell the strong rotten eggs smell because of the sulfur in the thermo spring water. The water is kinda hot. Very special place and unique experience when visit Aachen

We had a very good waiter so the service was excellent. Too bad the food didn’t follow the same vibe. The food was plane, bland and luke warm. We hoped to get the opportunity to savour some great local dishes, but we left disappointed. The wine was ok but not excellent either. The vibe is good though, the restaurant has a trendy and cosy feel and most of the staff are very friendly and professional. Go there for a drink but skip the food.
Hi W — Google review
Pretty sight, but has a strong smell of rotten eggs. I thought it was because of the hot temperatures outside, but later I learned that this is normal. It is known for its unpleasant-smelling thermal water: The two drinking fountains of the Elisenbrunnen in Aachen provide warm, sulphurous water at a temperature of 52°C. The unpleasant odour is due to the high sulphur content.
Linda — Google review
It is my fav place in Aachen, especially in summertime. People gather there in late afternoon to dance latin music, it is so alive and there is happiness everywhere. In winter it is good to touch the thermal water (be careful because it is hot) and just pace around and have a nice warm drink like a Glühwein at the cafes around. Just love it.
Lidi — Google review
It is nice but a lot of homeless there. Water with soulf smell ugly for me. In the back is a place with old walls of the city..is nice
Florin S — Google review
Beautiful visit. Enjoyed visiting the stores and restaurants. The Cathedral was absolutely gorgeous and comes with so much history. To bad we will miss the Christmas market. You do make 1 euro to take pictures in the Cathedral. Not a big deal and be careful where you venture into! Found the red light st by accident, and quickly walked through, lol. Overall, take in the sights and grab some spaghetti eis along the way
Anna S — Google review
A quick stop, but there’s not much to see. I would have liked to learn a little more about the history of this place and about the properties of the thermal water, but maybe I missed this information somewhere? You can look everything online these days, but sometimes you just prefer to have the information on the spot.
André M — Google review
Oftentimes, instrumental music is played here with people dancing to it. If you're lucky, you might be entertained by a whole band for free. It's always a pleasure to pass by and a great addition to the ambience of the old city.

Specialty Museums
The Couven Museum, located in Aachen, Germany, offers a captivating experience for visitors interested in the domestic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Housed in the historic Haus Monheim, this museum presents an array of period rooms featuring authentic furniture, decorative arts, and everyday objects from the Rococo, Classicism, and Biedermeier periods. The meticulously restored interiors include salons, kitchens, and private quarters that provide insight into the lifestyles of that era.
Beautiful museum near the Dom and Town Hall in the historic district of Aachen. You can wander from room to room and be impressed by the beautiful interiors. There is even a pharmacy and there is a fine collection of porcelain, furniture and especially cutlery
Seimen B — Google review
Quality museum, but the staff interactions left us with a negative experience while the rest of our time in Aachen was wonderful. Of note: Receptionist at the ticket desk was rather rude. While I recognize our party of two arrived near the end of the day with an hour to go before closing, the staff member appeared bothered by every interaction she had to make with us from handing over cash that she wanted left on the counter rather than being taken from our hands, to having to hold our small backpacks that she insisted on us checking with the desk, to clearly being frustrated with interacting with two non-native speakers when we were seeking clarity to make sure we didn’t impose. Not usually one for leaving reviews, but very disappointed in their customer service.
Aaron B — Google review
It’s a small museum with some interesting furniture and artwork dating from a different era. Only takes 10 to 30 minutes to go through the entire exhibit. It’s not entirely breathtaking, but it’s certainly interesting to walk through. Admittance was €10 to get in.
Carl C — Google review
It’s a small museum, overpriced (10 EUR per adult) for its size and what it has to offer. The receptionist was rude, not sure what she thinks of herself (we visited Sunday morning, 9th Nov). The persistent request to put a sticker on your clothes to be seen within museum (entry ticket) is ridiculous. It’s a few square meters museum, no logic and no need to do that. It reminded me of the past century and how certain people were treated in Germany, also requested to wear something on their jackets to be seen…. Absurd!
Julia K — Google review
Very nice Museum, the rooms are well kept, the smell from all the perfums. The people was very friendly, they answer to all the questions. The locations was very accessible.
Eudelia M — Google review
It is like visiting a house from the 18 century. The personal use to follow you every where you go but don't take it personal, they do that for everyone. It has an small inner yard where you can take a coffee for 1.50 EUR. It is a nice place if you like the art and your are curious about how the people lived in that times.
Rafael R — Google review
Zero charm at the entrance: the girl at the ticket desk made me leave a tiny backpack – pure pettiness. When I asked why my companion could keep her bag, she made her leave it too, out of spite. Professionalism clearly means something else here. Fortunately, there’s a lady upstairs, friendly and smiling, who saves the museum’s reputation.

Loved the Museum. We received a token from the aachen tourism office and could visit the Museum for free. Loved the place. It projects liyestyle of people from different tome period. Situated at tje very centre. Definitely recommended.

Carolus Thermen, also known as the Aachen Thermal Baths, is a sprawling complex spanning 11,000 square meters. It offers a range of indoor and outdoor pools with temperatures between 28C to 38C, saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation areas. The thermal springs' water is believed to have stress-reducing and relaxing properties.
Quality thermal bath with a lot of class. Well maintained, very clean. The crazy river is very powerful and a lot of fun. Two outdoor pools, multiple hot tubs, a main indoor pool and much besides. There's food too and you can buy souvenirs. Prices are OK. Reservation is not needed, but the parking can fill up. The website provides live info on this. If you like you can walk here from the beautiful center of Aix la Chapelle.

Absolutely loved my visit to the thermal springs! 💦🔥 This place is a true paradise for relaxation and recovery. There are so many different zones to explore — from hot steam rooms and Finnish saunas to gentle herbal baths and salt therapy rooms 🧖‍♂️🌿🧂. The variety of saunas is just amazing — each one with its own vibe and temperature, perfect for everyone’s preference 🧊🔥. The pools were the highlight for me — hot, warm, cold, even icy! 🥶♨️ You can dip in the hot mineral water and then jump into the cold pool for that refreshing shock 💥. The contrast therapy works wonders for both the body and mind. I spent hours just soaking, relaxing, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere 😌🛁✨. The salt room was another gem — the air felt so clean and calming, it’s like breathing in pure wellness 🌬️💨. My skin felt amazing afterward, and my stress just melted away 💆‍♂️. The whole complex is super clean, well-maintained, and beautifully designed. You can easily spend a full day here and still not get bored 😍🕰️. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to unwind, recharge, and treat themselves to something truly special 💖🌈. Whether you’re coming alone, as a couple, or with friends — this spot is a must-visit. Can’t wait to come back again! 🧳💚 🌟 10/10 experience 🌟

A wonderfu,l relaxing experience. Warm thermal baths with various water jets, massage showers etc and one cold pool. Two outside pools, one with lovely plants all around. You can buy all you need (swim suits, flip flops, towels, fancy soaps) or rent a towel or a bath robe. Nice self service restaurant too. You use your armband and pay later. There's a steam room and a room for resting, too. We did not go into the sauna area. I like the asset in the foyer.

I stopped by because I had extra time on my way to the Cathedral. The staff is welcoming and speaks English. It was a great discovery. The place is really well organized and clean. I loved of the references to Carolus Magnus. I spent most of my time in the sauna world. There are a lot of space, rooms and baths. I would definitely go back.
Max K — Google review
Perfect resting moment for me and my girlfriend's trip. 3.5h was enough to try everything, my favourite was the steam room with mint oil.
Francesco L — Google review
Great place. Very clean and modern, the baths are nice. The warmest bath is under 38°C, which is not very hot for me, but if a warm bath is good for you then this place is great. The steam room is lovely but in crowded days it can be difficult to get into.
Jeremiah G — Google review
A great spa for a relaxing afternoon. We only visited the Thermalbaths but they were great. The water is the perfect temperature and you can even swim outside. The water is all natural and contains no chloride, which is great for your skin. One of the best things in this spa is the hygiene, everything is clean and it is maintained regularly throughout the day. This makes it a great experience!

History Museums
Centre Charlemagne, also known as the New City Museum Aachen, is a modern building located in Aachen's Old Town. It offers an intriguing look at the city's history from ancient times to the present day. The museum focuses on Charlemagne and Aachen's role as a place of royal coronations. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits with audio and visual displays in multiple languages.
Really worth the visit! About one and a half hours is perfect. Lots of very interesting history starting at Roman times and working its way to present. Lots of interesting artifacts and paintings/photos to see. Entry very reasonable, only 6 €.
Carl C — Google review
They have a English audio guide and that's really helpful and you can understand all the things and its very engaging if you are interested in exploring the history of aachen.
Vikalp S — Google review
I retraced my steps from the morning to our first stop, the Charlemagne Centre. This museum showed the history of the city from pre Roman times through to the eighteenth century I think. There were some wonderful exhibits including a Roman glass drinking horn and Roman ear tweezers, a medieval crown, Arabic and Byzantine coins and some gospel covers. As well as exhibits there were various displays on events in the city such as the sack of the city by the Spanish to expel the Protestants in 1598, the 1656 fire that destroyed 90% of the old city, the change of borders in 1801 and 1815 and then 1918 and 1930 where the city moved between French and German control. The bombing and siege of the city in 1944 caused yet more large scale destruction. There were also sections on the importance of the city as a centre for scholarship and manuscript production and another section on Carolingian arms and armour. All good stuff! The displays had minimal descriptions in English but you could download an audio app if you wanted to. All of the media screens could be played in English. Entrance was 10 Euros and we were inside for about an hour.
Marcus H — Google review
Modern, well-structured museum that places Aachen’s history in context, from Roman times to Charlemagne and beyond. Nice timeline tying the exhibitions together.
Selman E — Google review
The museum was very interesting, but half of the exhibits focused on the city, and the material specifically about Charlemagne was somewhat limited. Also, most of the commentary was in German. On a positive note, they have a nice coffee place.
C P — Google review
I visited the exhibition on August 19 and, unfortunately, I would not recommend it. Upon arrival, I was disappointed that the receptionist made no effort to communicate in English, which made it difficult to understand the necessary information. I was only able to proceed thanks to the kindness of another visitor in line who helped translate. The exhibition itself was smaller than expected, and several of the interactive elements were out of order. Additionally, all the information and descriptions were only available in German, which made it hard to fully appreciate or understand the content as an international visitor. Given the limited experience and lack of accessibility for non-German speakers, I found the entrance fee quite high for what was offered.
Lucano B — Google review
An interesting city museum starting with the Romans to modern times. The focus is of course on Charlemagne. Who founded the city. His life and work is present everywhere in the city. The museum offers changing exhibitions. Plan for 2 hours.r
Natalie G — Google review
We only had 45 minutes to devote to this museum before our train, but that worked. A nice collection of relics from the time and Romans. The mail shirt felt remarkably heavy.

French restaurant
La Becasse in Aachen is a stylish and sophisticated restaurant known for its elevated French cuisine and extensive wine list. It offers fine dining with the option of multi-course meals or classic French dishes for dinner, while the lunch menu changes daily. The restaurant is part of Crossing Borders - a taste of Euregio project that collaborates with Dutch and Belgian chefs to organize special events. La Becasse has an unpretentious atmosphere and is popular for its excellent French cuisine and wines.
The price is so good, you must make a reservation about a month in advance. I love this restaurant so much that I took a train from Bochum with my friends to eat here. The surprise appetizer was salmon. The main course was sea bream, which was a perfect blend of spinach mashed potatoes and cream sauce. The dessert was raspberry mousse with vanilla ice cream. We ate too full that we couldn't even eat the chocolate after the meal. The service was always perfect.
Charlotte — Google review
Okay. This will be a hard review... we went to La Becasse after hearing many positive recommendations from some colleagues. A special occasion, so why not? 🤔 We tried the evening menu. The staff was tremendously kind and gave us a warm welcome. All was well up to this point. 😊 The food was great. We tried a three and four course menu since I wanted to try the oysters, which were offered as a starter. I will leave the oysters aside for the moment. 🦪 The soup we selected as a starter was amazing, with mini mushrooms and a mix of Asian flavors. And so was the main dish: a fish with a beurre blanc sauce and yuzu delighted us. 😋 The selection of cheese 🧀 as dessert was a dream. Up to 20 different types of cheese together. Maybe it was the occasion, an unfortunate situation, or just bad luck, but the oysters sent us to the hospital two days later. 🤢🏥 Yes, this is a risk of eating oysters, which I accept, although I have tried them in many other places without major concerns. Because of this experience, I need to take one star off. ⭐⭐⭐️⭐ Maybe next time we will have better luck. 🤞 #OysterExperience

Great fine dining experience with a lot of details. One of two Michelin star restaurants in Aachen.

6 course dinner. Food, service and atmosphere all on point. Great sommelier too. Mashed potatoes sound like a simple thing but here they execute it to perfection. You can go to two and three star places too but you'll rarely have the all-in experience you can have here. Mind blowing!
Bokkereyder R — Google review
Everything around food was absolutely delicious. They are a fine gourmet diner. Everything about the food and kitchen is excellent. I would recommend to get a vegetarian menu by itself. The service was great , friendly but not outstanding for a michelin restaurant. They can improve with matching wine and serving plates at the same time and with letting you know what your eating. (Slower and correct explanation) it becomes only 3 stars for the atmosphere because the decoration is really old school and even a bit cheesy. The windows with the seahorses and the images with a huge haven and james bond could use a little 2025 remake !
Jacqueline N — Google review
At the level of it's one 🌟 Michelin! Careful service and precise recommendation. The wines (in glass) were fitting perfectly. Product of high quality, exact cooking and breathtaking presentations. Not cheap of course, but the price of excellence I suppose!

German restaurant
Am Knipp is a historic restaurant located in Aachen, dating back to 1698 and housed in a 1600s building with charming features like tiles and wood beams. The restaurant offers robust meat plates, schnitzel, and traditional German dishes. Its cozy interior with wooden booths and dimmed lights creates an inviting atmosphere for enjoying local Riesling wines or German beer. During the summer, visitors can relax in the adjacent beer garden.
First time in Aachen and we decided to have German food for dinner. I chose this restaurant since I have read many good reviews. We had such an amazing experience not only with the food, but also with the hospitality of the staff. We were seated pretty soon. We had Schnitzel with onion and mushrooms and the other with the hot sauce and both were delicious. Food portion is big and honestly one dish is more than enough for two people! Price was reasonable. Highly recommend it!
Maryam B — Google review
Lovely, cosy local restaurant, which seems to attract a lot of the locals as well, more so than travellers, which is usually a great sign, meaning that the food is authentic. The schnitzels here were fantastic, good size, great batter and both the pepper and mushroom sauce were super flavourful, of course accompanied by some locals beers this was a real treat. Lovely staff as well!
Hugo H — Google review
Great food, service and atmosphere! They led us to the back of the restaurant, a paved garden with gorgeous gazebos and fairy lights as the sun began to set. Had the garlic escargots, schnitzel with pepper sauce, turkey breast with mushroom sauce (super flexible as that should have been with a mustard sauce), potatoes cooked to perfection and a fresh season salad. The wines recommended were excellent. Definitely a lovely spot to dine, in this charming German town! :)

We visited Am Kipp yesterday with my mom and sister, and we were absolutely blown away! The food was incredible – we had schnitzel with pepper sauce and a fresh salad, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Portions were generous, and we left with happy, full stomachs. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was lively and cheerful – yes, it’s a bit loud, but that’s part of the charm. Definitely make a reservation, as the place is usually packed. And the draft beer was just perfect! We’ll definitely be coming back.

Sankt Benedikt is a renowned restaurant located in the historical center of Kornelimunster, near Aachen. It has been a part of North Rhine-Westphalia's fine dining scene since 1982 and boasts a stunning French-cosmopolitan kitchen that has earned it a Michelin star. Despite facing challenges due to recent floods, the restaurant reopened in December 2021 to the delight of diners.
We had a reservation today at 12 for lunch. The place is really cute and the host, waiters and chef are great! Super friendly and warm. The food was full of suprising flavors and was presented beautifully. We will come back for sure! Special thanks to the waiter (guy with blond hair) who served most of the dishes and was able to tell us about all the ingredients. Amazing service!

This is an incredible experience of food! ⭐ Served by warm welcoming waiters it's a fantastic lunch. Not many options are offered, which makes the food even more tasty and an explosion of flavours. 🍲 You'll have the most regional food and drinks of the specific season. Restaurant Best Friends is a delightful culinary haven that beautifully marries the art of sushi with vibrant Thai flavors. Nestled in a minimalist setting, it offers an array of sushi rolls and sashimi alongside enticing stir-fries and curries. The vegan options are particularly noteworthy, featuring delicious makis filled with fresh ingredients like radish, cucumber, avocado, and tofu. Guests can also indulge in warm dishes such as tofu curry that cater to plant-based diets.

Loved their ambiance. They have a very pretty open place in their back. Their smoking zone is a bit on the corner, so the smoke does not bother. Moreover their stuffs were very nice and friendly. have ordered quite a few items, some were brilliant, and some of them had average taste. For the starter we had, spinach salad: it was good, it has a peanut sauce dreesing, which was blended really nice with spinach. Dim Sum: I loved this one. Highly recommend 🤌 pad thai noodles: did not like it that much. Taste was a little bland I will not recommend this particular dish. Lost monk: This one was a platter of flavor. This dish has a good portion of proteinprawn, beef, chicken, and mashroom with lots of vegetables. But this one is a little spicy. As i love spicy, I highly recommend this one. Best friend curry: This one was a wholesome dish. 3/4 types of fish, cooked in coconut milk. Swet and sloght tangy taste. Also, I recommend this one. Except for the pad thai, i loved all other items, and i will, of course, visit again ❤️

This is one of the best sushi places you will ever find. And I mean like worldwide, including Japan. This is place offers special dishes like Best Friend's rolls and Fried Inside outs, which you will miss everywhere else you go. Price/value wise, you will not find anything comparable, unless you are looking for a cheap-quality rolling sushi buffet, which this place is definitely not. For those who don't like sushi or raw stuff, there is also a pletora of awesome cooked dishes like curries, the classical Lost Monk, or Sara Sake salmon with teriyaki sauce. Enjoy your meal!

we’ve been there twice and have been waiting for over 30 minutes to get a waitress coming to the table, there’s little option for vegetarians and it’s quite crowded and noisy in there. Location in the city is good though. Sushi lovers seem to like it, other options are soups, fried rice and noodles soso taste Food is too salty and fatty

Hanswurst - Das Wurstrestaurant is a unique grocery store and cafe in Aachen, offering a variety of gourmet German sausages, pretzels, and fries paired with wheat beers. Located near the cathedral, it's an ideal spot to grab a quick German snack while exploring the city. The restaurant provides outdoor seating on Munsterplatz for visitors to enjoy their meal amidst the lively atmosphere.
We visited Handwurst for some classic sausages – and they were absolutely delicious! The beer was great too. It’s self-service, which I personally didn’t love, but everything was quick and well-organized, so it worked smoothly. A good spot for a casual, tasty meal.

It's a fast food place with typical sausages from Germany. The idea is cool and the result is good also. The place, when the weather is not nice to use the terrace is not especially big and you will need to wait for a table to get free. The staff sometimes don't speak perfect English but enough to help you with any doubts you can have about the food. So, in short, a good option for a tourist stop, rest and recharge batteries.

We really enjoyed our visit! The sausages were delicious especially the blood sausages, which were full of flavor and perfectly cooked. Portions were generous and satisfying. The place has a great vibe, with a laid-back. Self-service setup that works well. Even the toilet was clean and thoughtfully maintained….always a nice surprise. All in all, a great spot. We’d love to come back!

If you’re looking for authentic German sausages, Hanswurst in Aachen is a must-visit! The original recipe sausages are incredibly delicious – juicy, full of flavor, and grilled to perfection. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get, making it absolutely worth it. Don’t miss out on their award-winning beer either – it’s smooth, refreshing, and pairs perfectly with the food. A great place for a hearty and satisfying meal in the heart of Aachen!

Very good location, right in the town center, next to the Dom Cathedral. We had the mix combo for 2 people with 4 types of sausages, 4 types of sauces, fries and grilled vegetables, and one extra portion of the goulash soup with bread because we were very hungry. Fair price, good place to try German food & bevarage
