Aachen in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Aachen, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Aachen attracts visitors with its remarkable imperial cathedral and treasury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former coronation church of German kings linked to Charlemagne. The compact old town features medieval lanes, historic fountains, and lively cafés, shaped in part by the large student population. Aachen is also known for its thermal springs and modern spa facilities, as well as its traditional Printen gingerbread. Its location near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands makes it an easy base for exploring the wider Euregio region.
With favorites like Aachen Cathedral, Dat Frittebüdche, and The Three Country Point NL / BE / DE, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurant Elisenbrunnen and Deniz Kebap Haus so you can get the best taste of Aachen while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Afzaal C — Google review
A really big (4 floors) and modern shopping centre. Has lots of shops, plus a food court offering plenty of eating options. I'm not giving 5 stars, as you have to pay to use the toilets. Otherwise, a great experience.
Tintin — Google review
“Very crowded, and the lift is a nightmare if you’re with children. On the bright side, there are plenty of shops and places to visit. But I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking to relax — just too many people.”
A. S — Google review
A great place for most of your shopping needs in Aachen. Around 700 m from the train station. Located at the heart of the city, the biggest shopping mall in the city of Aachen. The mall has a parking place. You will find almost all the familiar shop here, (h&m, c&a also nearby). There is shop for kids. A kid play station. If you get tired of shopping, you can sit, there is plenty of space for seating. The most amazing thing is there is a food court, they offer wide variety of foods. If you want to eat only a bakery item, there is a Rewe also. For electronics you will find Saturn. In the second floor, there is a toilet, that is very clean. They have both escalator and lift. And the interior design is eye shooting.
Mumtahana T — Google review
The right place for quick day trip to Aachen! Park the car, do a round in the Aquis shops. I am not a super fan of the food corner but it is very decent for quick bite, many options. The town center is just a short walk. It is pretty much our favorite mall to park and explore Aachen for a day
Todor T — Google review
Aquis Plaza in Aachen is a spacious shopping mall featuring many well-known stores to suit every need. On the top floor, there’s a food court where you can enjoy a meal or snack. The connected parking garage makes visiting very convenient, with direct access to the mall from the parking area.

ElisenGalerie is an elegant shopping destination with a small but diverse selection of shops and cafes, all centered around a stunning glass-domed atrium. Visitors can find high-quality items at upscale prices, with the option to explore sale items for more reasonable deals. The gallery offers something for everyone, including a Package-free shop called 'Unverpackt' that's worth checking out.
Grashupfer Kinderschuhe was great. They measured our daughters feet and the shoe to ensure a proper fit. Staff was incredibly knowledgeable and kind. They also spoke English which was so helpful for us.

Brewpub
Beer hall
Restaurant
Aachener Brauhaus is a cozy and traditional German beer hall located in the city center. The interior features dark wood-lined halls, wooden booths, rustic elements, and old-timey paintings. The restaurant offers classic German dishes such as pork knuckle, sausages, roast beef, blood sausage with potatoes and sauerkraut. Despite some mixed reviews about the service, many visitors have enjoyed the rich and hearty German food served at Aachener Brauhaus.
It’s like falling into a 100 year old German dream. The atmosphere was so pleasant on a Tuesday afternoon at 5pm. I could order the entire menu but had to decide on the Aachener Sauerbraten as it was recommended. Next time I will try the Eisbein. I love Aachen and even more so I love the Stehgraa
J C — Google review
We ate here twice and both times the food was excellent. The pork knuckle was juicy and full of flavor, and the sausages were just as tasty. The staff were friendly and welcoming. A couple of downsides: the toilet was quite dirty both times, definitely needs more attention. Also, payment can be tricky. Tourists, be prepared: not all cards are accepted, so have cash with you just in case (see my photo for more info). Portions are well balanced for the price, and the authentic interior adds to the charm. We’d still love to come back for the food and atmosphere!
Awi M — Google review
I really loved the interior design of the place. The serving is quite large so we shared our food. I'm looking for a little bit more flavor with the food but overall the meat was soft and tender. The staff were very friendly and accommodating as well. The catch for payment is they so not accept Visa or MasterCard. Be prepared to have cash or a giocard, v pay or maestro cards.
Michelle G — Google review
It was my first time at the restaurant, and it was a good experience. However, when I was paying the bill, I was in for a surprise. They don't accept credit cards or debit cards from other countries. I live in Belgium and went for a visit. Okay, I had some cash; the bill came to €86, and I was only €6 short. They didn't give me an option to pay the rest. I offered a bank transfer, all my cards, and nothing. They simply said there was nothing they could do. I left my wife and my kid at the restaurant and tried to withdraw money, but to no avail. Seeing my difficulty, they really didn't give me an option, because of the €6 bill. I had to go to a supermarket and ask a customer who would pay the bill in cash to give me the amount, so I could pay with my Belgian card. That was the only way I could get the remaining €6. I returned to the restaurant, paid the 6 euros, rescued my wife and daughter, and left. It was a complete lack of empathy. However, there was a small sign at the entrance warning that they didn't accept credit cards. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention.

I was recommended by your logo guide a friend of mine. It was a very great experience. We went at around 8:30. The food there is amazing is a traditional Germany grilled pork meat. The portion is amazing. Also, the taste is fantastic is a reasonable price and it’s I think it’s a very local restaurant, the atmosphere is so great.
Raelynn A — Google review
the food was super tasty, quite authentic, the service was quick, and everything was absolutely delicious. The beer was tasty, fairly priced, and served in large sizes. I especially recommend the weiss beer. I especially recommend the dishes shown in the photos.
Lucia A — Google review
It’s been 30 years since I last came here. The Pork knuckle tastes the same as 30 years ago which is excellent. The Schnitzel was also good. Two of us paid €52 for food and drinks. A good place to start to learn about German cuisine. Highly recommended.
Johnny C — Google review
We’re from the southwest US and love German cuisine. This is our first visit to Germany and this restaurant is a true gem! My partner and I especially like sauerbraten and the dinner we enjoyed at Aachener Brauhaus was absolutely amazing, served with cabbage and gnocchis. The beef was so tender that it could easily be cut with a fork and melted in our mouths with a wonderful sauce. Of course German beer is known around the globe for its purity and flavor, so I enjoyed a great dunkel while she had an outstanding weissbier. Excuse the superlatives but our meals were just that good.

The Elisenbrunnen is a neoclassical pavilion built in the early 19th century to showcase Aachen's magical mineral springs, which were believed to have health benefits. Named after Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria, this iconic structure features two sulfurous drinking fountains and is a popular attraction in the city. Visitors can also explore other nearby landmarks such as the cathedral, town hall, Couven Museum, and Casino Aachen.
An elegant neoclassical building which was built in 1827, inside there is 2 drinking fountain which connect to the thermo spring. Walk in the building you may smell the strong rotten eggs smell because of the sulfur in the thermo spring water. The water is kinda hot. Very special place and unique experience when visit Aachen

We had a very good waiter so the service was excellent. Too bad the food didn’t follow the same vibe. The food was plane, bland and luke warm. We hoped to get the opportunity to savour some great local dishes, but we left disappointed. The wine was ok but not excellent either. The vibe is good though, the restaurant has a trendy and cosy feel and most of the staff are very friendly and professional. Go there for a drink but skip the food.
Hi W — Google review
Pretty sight, but has a strong smell of rotten eggs. I thought it was because of the hot temperatures outside, but later I learned that this is normal. It is known for its unpleasant-smelling thermal water: The two drinking fountains of the Elisenbrunnen in Aachen provide warm, sulphurous water at a temperature of 52°C. The unpleasant odour is due to the high sulphur content.
Linda — Google review
It is my fav place in Aachen, especially in summertime. People gather there in late afternoon to dance latin music, it is so alive and there is happiness everywhere. In winter it is good to touch the thermal water (be careful because it is hot) and just pace around and have a nice warm drink like a Glühwein at the cafes around. Just love it.
Lidi — Google review
It is nice but a lot of homeless there. Water with soulf smell ugly for me. In the back is a place with old walls of the city..is nice

Beautiful visit. Enjoyed visiting the stores and restaurants. The Cathedral was absolutely gorgeous and comes with so much history. To bad we will miss the Christmas market. You do make 1 euro to take pictures in the Cathedral. Not a big deal and be careful where you venture into! Found the red light st by accident, and quickly walked through, lol. Overall, take in the sights and grab some spaghetti eis along the way
Anna S — Google review
Food good, but a bit on the expensive side, with service unbelievably slow... For drinks we waited more than 30min, for soup more than an hour and even then they brought different soup to what we ordered. We used to come here to dine, but we'll seek something else next time.
Peter G — Google review
A quick stop, but there’s not much to see. I would have liked to learn a little more about the history of this place and about the properties of the thermal water, but maybe I missed this information somewhere? You can look everything online these days, but sometimes you just prefer to have the information on the spot.

Mayersche Aachen is not just a bookstore, but also a cozy spot to study, read, and work while enjoying coffee. It offers a diverse selection of books on various topics, along with board games, toys, and local products from Aachen. The ambiance is inviting and conducive to spending hours lost in books or engaging in quiet activities. The comfortable seating arrangements and soft lighting create the perfect environment for book lovers to immerse themselves in captivating novels.
Well, wherever I go, I have a constant need to find I bookstore - no matter what kind of joint it is. This one though, is remarkable one. Stumbled here by an accident , wandering down the streets; although is located in the center of Old Town Aachen. Mayer´s 4 floors serves an outstanding collection of books and book appliances (notebooks, pens, gadgets as well as souvenirs). One easily finds itself browse trough magazines, books, hundreds of journals, diaries, writing instruments and all kinds of funny little stuff you can imagine. Most of the books are naturally in german, so the international section is not too versatile. But I was stunned how the place gathered all sorts of people: old, young, couples, tourists, book lovers and especially families with small kids. Mayer has created a family-friendly space worth mentioning. One floor is mostly dedicated for children to play and spend time. It also has books and toys targeted at them. The complex has astonishing 3 cafeterias, all of them almost full at any time (visited here in three different occasions). The top floor café - that has also an outside terrace - was packed with students studying. Couldn´t left this place without shopping. Would have loved to sit and read, but the task was impossible due the amount of people. Be there on the opening hours if you feel anxiety of crowds!
Matjas M — Google review
I visited this bookstore three years ago when I was on a school trip. I happened to be in Aachen two days ago and I knew I had to go back. Both times were amazing. If you’re a book lover, don’t hesitate. There is a huge selection of English books as well.
Maria M — Google review
Very cozy bookstore with a nice cafe as well. The architecture is unique and gives it the vibe of a small library as well. The staircase in the middle makes the experience a lot more mystical. You can get all sorts of books here in both German and English and some other languages. One of my favorite book stores.
Abram M — Google review
Amazing bookshop! So many different departments, you even get the choice of books in English. Highly recommend to visit!

I was looking for a new book and asked a worker to help me find it. She helped me look and when it wasn't available yet, she said she would call to let me know if it got there tomorrow. She followed through and let me know the next day. Amazing service

A huge bookstore with options and for every age. The section for children's books and toys is on 2nd floor and something to eat on top floor. I had not bought a book in years and ended up buying one.

Restaurant Elisenbrunnen is a delightful spot in Aachen that offers a taste of traditional German cuisine alongside an impressive breakfast selection. Nestled in a spacious, modern venue with views of the garden, it provides a pleasant dining atmosphere. During our visit on New Year's Eve, we found the service to be friendly and the prices quite reasonable. The menu features classic German dishes complemented by decadent cakes and tortes that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
Beautiful place with a very nice view. The Aachener Domlikor is amazing with herb flavors and a hint of rose taste. The coffee is good. Very friendly staff. Nice experience!
Alex F — Google review
Well located restaurant, cozy ambience and good/quick service. There is plenty to choose, German dishes mainly. We didn’t like the quality of the food, too much sauce over the meat, the fries were the frozen type, steak was dry… few things to improve honestly.
CPR — Google review
We were made to wait a full hour for our main dishes after we finishing our starters. Awful experience. There was a second when I almost starved to death I was wondering if my beef was still on the field. The dishes are too salty. I could hardly taste anything but saltiness in both dishes we ordered. The environment is great. Comfortable seats and lovely light.
YANHAO Z — Google review
Didn’t even get served, me and my mum only wanted coffee & cake. The man at the bar told us to take a seat someone would be over shortly, but after over 20mins we were still waiting, the waiter went to everyone else but completely blanked us. So we left & ate somewhere else.
Lisa S — Google review
Location more for conservative, retired, local people who like overcooked vegetables and less fresh salad. Not for our internal group (USA, Kanada) with age under 60.
Stef B — Google review
We ordered 4 coffees and 3 pieces of cake. The coffee arrived quickly, but after that everything went downhill. We had to wait over 25 minutes for the cake. After about 20 minutes, the waiter came to tell us that one type was sold out, so we ordered a different one — and then had to wait another 10 minutes for that. The cake was delicious, but the waiting time was really unacceptable. What bothered me most, however, was the atmosphere. There was a woman working there who spoke to customers in a very rude and aggressive way. She was literally snapping at people and almost shouting at them — it made the whole experience very uncomfortable. I also find it completely normal that when you eat or drink somewhere, you can use the restroom. Apparently not here — they even charged money for the toilet, despite the already high prices. Overall, a disappointing experience. A bit more friendliness and better organization could have made this a really nice place.
Finn V — Google review
Nice looking restaurant with friendly personnel. But the food was disappointing. €18,- for a crab breakfast. Which has a very thin slice of bread. Scrambled eggs and scrimps thrown on. Nothing special something easily made at home which would taste better. The other dishes were even more disappointing the menu says ham from the bone and what you get is ham from a package. Skip if you come to Aachen.

Deniz Kebap Haus in Germany is a magical place where you can experience amazing kebabs that will make you believe in the power of good food. While the prices are reasonable and there are vegetarian options available, some may find better alternatives in the city for similar prices. Best Döner place in all of Aachen. +Good taste +Fair price +Great value +Seating inside +Toilet upstairs In my opinion this place sells the best Döner in all of Aachen. You can choose between Chicken meat or veal meat. Not that many places left with such an oldschool typical Döner Place vibe in Aachen, this is a must go to place ! The Döner cost 6.5€.

It’s quite popular place including social media. Entrances from both sides. Quite all right. Tomatensuppe - 6,90€ - good taste, two slices of baguette served, grilled. Small but it’s starter. (Hahnchen)schnitzel - 17,90€ - nice, soft texture, taste good with not too much oil (which happens), very very hot. French fries tasty. Cranberry dip served should be replaced by another better fitting the dish. Portion medium size. 4/5 is just the right review.

LA PAMPA is a restaurant known for its good food and generous portions. The staff is generally courteous, although there have been instances of early closures and some awkward encounters. Despite this, the atmosphere is pleasant with nice decor and hardworking staff. The steaks are particularly recommended, with one visitor claiming it to be the best Ribeye they've had in Germany.
One of the best place in Aachen for the steaks! Very tasty and delicious. They serve it in different types (entrecotes, rib eye, hüfte, …) along with salade and/or frites. There is also wide selection for the sea food. Vine is excellent. Team is great!

Very welcoming and friendly lady/owner and waiter who together took care of us, a group of 7. Nice inside table by the window. Very warm due to lack of A/C. Steaks were nice, tasty but a bit overcooked. La Pampa used to be elsewhere in downtown Aachen. Present location not as quaint and comfy as previous locale. Would nevertheless definitely go back.

Strong concept of Argentinian Steak house with warm welcome of the owner. Love their steak with mushroom sauce. I also enjoy their half kilo of delicious shrimp 🍤
Erlangga D — Google review
Tasty steak, good sauce. A bit to few pieces of croquet for me. What brings the score down is the lack of salad, a single leaf which in that case should have been left off. As well as the kitchen not being able to cook a steak medium. First is was rare and when I asked the waitress to adjust it it came back medium well, finishing as well done before my last bites.

Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Imperial Cathedral or the Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle, is a significant landmark and one of Europe's oldest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral features Charlemagne's impressive octagonal chapel and houses various historic artifacts such as a candelabrum from Frederick Barbarossa and Charlemagne's marble throne. It is also the final resting place of Charlemagne, known as the Father of Europe for unifying Western Europe.
Absolutely gorgeous. Smaller than cathedrals in other areas but the mosaic ceiling is magnificent. Walks and floor are marble or a similar rock, entire place is beautiful, and the story of how it was built is fun to hear!

If you can do take a moment to stop and admire this cathedral inside and out. It’s particularly beautiful when seen lit up in the evening. If you fancy attending gluten and dairy free patisserie, the cafe opposite - Isabella - in the main square is pricey but delicious

Constructed at the turn of the 9th century, the Palatine Chapel in Aachen stands as a testament to the ambition and legacy of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor. Originally conceived as the centerpiece of his imperial palace complex, the chapel was designed not only as a place of worship but also as a powerful symbol of his newly established empire's grandeur and a physical representation of the a "new Rome". Its architectural brilliance lies in its unique fusion of classical, Byzantine, and Carolingian elements.
Steven C — Google review
Visiting Aachen Cathedral is like stepping into the heart of European history. As soon as you walk in, the scale and grandeur hit you — soaring ceilings, intricate mosaics, and that unmistakable sense of centuries pressing down in the best possible way. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason. Its mix of Carolingian, Gothic, and Baroque architecture feels like a living timeline. The Palatine Chapel, with its golden mosaics and octagonal dome, is breathtaking — especially when sunlight streams in and makes the colors glow like liquid gold. One of the highlights is the Imperial Throne of Charlemagne, where history literally sits before you. Imagine emperors being crowned here; it’s humbling and kind of surreal. The cathedral treasury is also incredible — relics, chalices, and artifacts that tell stories you won’t find in guidebooks. Accessibility is good, though it can get crowded, especially during weekends or special services. That said, the quiet corners and chapels give you space to reflect, take photos, or just marvel at the centuries-old craftsmanship. If you pay €1 you can take photos and videos.

Most unusual- keeps the look of the old times. A very beautiful cathedral a lot out of the main path.

didn't get time to go inside but it's a great place to sit and look at the stunning architecture, the town is nice and the sandwiches from one of the many coffee shops was great, really enjoyed the place.

German restaurant
Hanswurst - Das Wurstrestaurant is a unique grocery store and cafe in Aachen, offering a variety of gourmet German sausages, pretzels, and fries paired with wheat beers. Located near the cathedral, it's an ideal spot to grab a quick German snack while exploring the city. The restaurant provides outdoor seating on Munsterplatz for visitors to enjoy their meal amidst the lively atmosphere.
We visited Handwurst for some classic sausages – and they were absolutely delicious! The beer was great too. It’s self-service, which I personally didn’t love, but everything was quick and well-organized, so it worked smoothly. A good spot for a casual, tasty meal.
Anna J — Google review
It's a fast food place with typical sausages from Germany. The idea is cool and the result is good also. The place, when the weather is not nice to use the terrace is not especially big and you will need to wait for a table to get free. The staff sometimes don't speak perfect English but enough to help you with any doubts you can have about the food. So, in short, a good option for a tourist stop, rest and recharge batteries.
Rey N — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit! The sausages were delicious especially the blood sausages, which were full of flavor and perfectly cooked. Portions were generous and satisfying. The place has a great vibe, with a laid-back. Self-service setup that works well. Even the toilet was clean and thoughtfully maintained….always a nice surprise. All in all, a great spot. We’d love to come back!

If you’re looking for authentic German sausages, Hanswurst in Aachen is a must-visit! The original recipe sausages are incredibly delicious – juicy, full of flavor, and grilled to perfection. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get, making it absolutely worth it. Don’t miss out on their award-winning beer either – it’s smooth, refreshing, and pairs perfectly with the food. A great place for a hearty and satisfying meal in the heart of Aachen!

Novotel Aachen City

Hotel
Novotel Aachen City is a laid-back hotel in the heart of Aachen, Germany. The modern and soundproofed rooms are fully renovated and offer amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TV, and tea/coffee facilities. The hotel features a fitness center with panoramic city views, sauna facilities, Turkish bath, and a spa center. It also offers underground parking and a children's playroom.
We stayed here as part of our trip to the F1 race at Spa in 2025. The room met all our needs. The breakfast buffet was substantial and had many options. And its location was close to many dining options as well, all within walking distance from the hotel. I am particularly grateful to the staff, who not only were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, but also went out of thier way to return an item I left in a taxi on my way to airport after my stay.
Bill B — Google review
Whenever I visited Aachen I stayed here, it’s a 4*, polite personnel, convenient parking, huge tv for anyone interested. This time though, no fridge in the room anymore. No chilled water, go buy some from the reception at 3 o’clock in the morning when you are thirsty, or drink it warm. Environmentally friendly I guess. It degraded my experience.
Maria K — Google review
Everything is very nice EXCEPT Air conditioning. Our room was very warm and very little cool air coming out. The hotel was also warm all over. We were told the air is controlled by All.Accor. We chose this hotel partially because of wanting air. The sun was directly at our window so room got very hot. Otherwise, it was great - clean and comfortable.
Lorene P — Google review
Always receive a great service, smooth check-in/out, clean rooms, comfortable beds, great facilities and convenient carpark below. Very affordable too. Kids love the play area in reception. Great location for walking into the city centre. As others have stated the surrounding areas can be full of all sorts of characters and drug use is definitely a problem same for any European city knowdays, but this has never effected myself and my family.
Dave L — Google review
We had a terrible experience here. The room was dirty and smelled bad, and staff refused to change it. Housekeeping would open the door in the morning without permission. At check-out, they demanded unjustified cleaning charges. The receptionist was very rude. Completely ruined our trip.
Aisha A — Google review
We stayed in Novotel in Aachen and the overall experience was good. The room had a good view, the location was excellent (just opposite to the bushof) and the food in the restaurant was very good and last but not least, the staff were very courteous

I booked this property through Booking.com and canceled the reservation within about one hour. The cancellation page clearly showed “Free”, but later I received a message saying that I would be charged the full amount. I contacted the hotel to explain the situation, but unfortunately, they refused to help or clarify the issue. I’m disappointed with how the situation was handled, as it seemed unfair and uncooperative. And no response for my message of mail. I hope the property and Booking.com can improve communication and make the cancellation policy clearer for future guests.
K — Google review
Several factors contributed to our disatisfaction. First, upon arrival we asked to reduce the duration of our stay by one day from 8 to 7 nights. They were unwilling to do so. Second, the design of the room, while attractive was extremely impractical. There was very little storage space, and the complex floorplan was difficult to navigate at night. Third, the fire alarm went off at 2:00 am causing us to evacuate the room. There was zero sympathy from the staff the next day. To summarize, we will be choosing one of the many competitors on our next trip to Aachen.

Marktplatz am Rathaus

Historical landmark
Marktplatz am Rathaus is a charming open public market square located in Aachen, featuring the impressive Aachen Rathaus, a Gothic city hall built on the ruins of Charlemagne's palace. The town hall, still used by the city council, offers magnificent rooms that visitors can tour when not in session. The square itself hosts wooden chalets selling gifts and food, creating a romantic atmosphere with glittering trees and light-studded garlands.
The open public market square with plenty of space for seasonal and festival markers or for a good walk around the historical old town area of the city. Has many popular restaurants and stores around and the big and beautiful town hall building as well. Great place to enjoy a nice coffee or a nice walk!
SACHIT V — Google review
The Markt in front of the Aachen Rathaus is already buzzing with that unmistakable pre-Christmas magic — even before the official opening of the Christmas Market. The massive Christmas tree is already up, standing tall and proud against the stunning Gothic backdrop of the Aachen Town Hall, its twinkling lights hinting at the festivities to come. Around it, workers and vendors are busy assembling the charming wooden stalls that will soon fill the square with the smell of mulled wine, roasted nuts, and fresh waffles.

Ponttor, also known as Bruckenpforte or Bruckenthor in the 17th and 18th centuries, is a well-preserved medieval gate in Aachen, Germany. Dating back to the 14th century, it was once part of the original city walls and served as a crucial entrance point and defensive element. The name "Ponttor" is believed to have originated from the Latin word "pons," meaning bridge.
In standing within it doorway, you can imagine the hustle and bustle as people came and went from the city past this control point. Remarkably well preserved considering WW2 and 700 years passed.
Carl C — Google review
Why I love it🎈🎉 Because it's one of only two surviving medieval city gates, built in the 14th century, it connects us directly to Aachen’s history. Since then, it has stood strong, a right-angled, three-storey fortress complete with portcullis, machicolations, and barbican—telltale signs of serious defense architecture. Today, it’s still alive, used by scout groups—so it isn’t just stone, but part of community life. Because it anchors the students’ quarter, it radiates quiet vibrancy and feels like the heart of this side of town. 🤏 Something tiny that you should know in advance ^^ And it lacks clear signage—history enthusiasts may feel lost unless they bring a guide or check their phone. And it’s minimal in comfort: no benches, café, or lighting—great for quiet reflection, less so for long visits. 🎙️ Real-life moments “When we walked under the arch, a local scout group was passing by—kids in uniforms, backpacks and all. It reminded me that this stone gate still breathes community.” “Pausing there, you imagine merchants and travelers filtering in centuries ago—this was their welcome gate.” 💡 Tips for your visit Go during golden hour—late afternoon light plays beautifully on sandstone and limestone. Bring your own context—a pocket guide or your phone unlocks stories about the portcullis, barbican, and moat. Combine it with a stroll—Pontstraße leads directly into the Altstadt; next stop: Elisenbrunnen, shops, cafés. 🎐✨️ Take away Summary: Ponttor doesn’t try to impress. It doesn’t sparkle—it whispers. For anyone who loves history mixed with everyday life, it’s perfect. No entry fee. No crowds. Just a gateway standing as Aachen’s medieval reminder—and still quietly relevant today. ⭐ Rating: 4.5★ Timeless architecture and living history > just a few missing info boards and seating. 📸 Should you go? Absolutely. Whether you're into medieval stones, scouting stories, or just want a peaceful pause before hitting cafés and boutiques—Ponttor’s got your vibe.

There is nothing much special about this place is sit in one of the center areas where buses and cars passed by. It is just a very odd gate from the middle-age century definitely carries historical values, but it’s the kind of building that people just ignored every day and wants to take another second look at it, but however, we were tourist so we stopped by. We took a few pictures, but there is nothing much look at ano, no no introductions next to the structure. I will say the maximum of visiting time is up to three minutes if you traveled by the passage down below the structure, you would feel a very strong sense of urine which I don’t think is nice.
Raelynn A — Google review
I like historical spots; there is no much to do there but visiting the spot and taking some pictures; so, few minutes will be fine. But the Ponttor and also the Marschiertor are must see if you visit Aachen. Just, pass by and take some pictures. For me, the Ponttor was better, bigger area and with additional details, compared to the Marschiertor, though the Marschiertor is taller. The idea that these 2 gates are the remains of a once larger wall surrounding the city of Aachen and protecting it's occupants from raids and invasions, is just impressive!
Patrick K — Google review
One of the two remaining gates of the now gone city walls Aachen.
Gloria G — Google review
Not much to see here, however, it’s still a nice ancient gate for a cool photo. Also I wish i could get some written information to read more fun facts about this gate and educate my ignorant self a little 😊
Linh D — Google review
If you are a fan of medieval architecture, this place is a must! It is a prime example of a city gate, one that you imagine while playing games or reading books. I saw it during a drizzle and really imagined myself being a peasant trying to sneak into the city past the guards and looking for the last coins to bribe them... If you are not fan of fiction, the gate will not fail to impress either.

We had such a wonderful stay! The whole atmosphere was super relaxing and peaceful, just what we needed. We especially loved the pool and saunas. The wellness area was beautifully maintained and perfect for unwinding. Every detail felt cared for, and the vibe throughout the hotel was genuinely lovely. Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway. The hotel as a whole is beautiful and very lovely. The room was great and spacious. All of our requests were met for the room. The bar had great drinks and a nice atmosphere. But on Friday afternoon I grabbed a cup of coffee at the bar and the young women working was very rude and seemed extremely frustrated that I spoke English. Friday late evening we went to the bar again and a different young women with glasses took our order and she was helpful and very kind. The cocktail was delicious and so was the dessert we ordered. Saturday was the day we checked out and we requested a late check out at 1pm. But when we were in the room between 11am-12pm housekeeping knocked on our door three separate times to try and clean our room. This was very rude and defeated the purpose of the late check out so we could relax in the room before our checkout.

We had a very pleasant stay in the Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen! The staff was available and welcoming, the atmosphere was classy but not uptight and it felt very relaxing and comfortable. We had the pleasant surprise of being upgraded, we really appreciated. The sauna was quiet and spacious. The breakfast buffet was so rich and tasty! The only point for improvement I could suggest is firmer mattresses and pillows - ours were a bit too soft.
Celine B — Google review
I always enjoy hotels in historic buildings, so I chose the Parkhotel Quellenhof without hesitation for this trip to Aachen. The hotel is truly charming, even a bit mysterious. The premium room I booked was spacious, bright, and the bed was comfortable. One downside was the lack of a night light, especially in the bathroom, which only had a one-touch full-light function, with no zones. The service was average, meeting German hotel standards. This meant that requesting pillow option or a turndown service was a luxury. I didn't even see a bellhop, let alone a concierge. Overall, this is a good Germany four-star hotel.
Ilumdecor G — Google review
The reception people were very friendly and efficient in their jobs. We requested an iron with a board in our room, but had to call again. The waiting time was rather long. The hotel charges sixteen euros per night for a open space parking. Most hotels of this class offer parking for free.
Atique C — Google review
Nice hotel, beautiful, friendly staff, parking garage, underneath the hotel, good location. A few points for adjustment: - the sauna's didn't work properly, they were not hot enough, putting water on the stones didn't work. Also the steam bath wasn't working. - the room was too hot and the ventilation system didn't make it cooler, also opening the window didn't help much - breakfast relatively too expensive (quality versus price)

Perfect Stay with Our Baby – Full of Character and Comfort! My husband and I stayed for one night with our baby, and everything exceeded our expectations — this place truly deserves five stars. The room was spacious enough for our stroller, and our baby had plenty of room to crawl around safely. We absolutely loved the character of the hotel — the vintage furniture and thoughtful design of the bathroom fixtures gave it a warm, historical charm. The king-size bed was incredibly comfortable — we both slept so well! There was a small fridge in the room, and we especially appreciated the convenient phone charging setup by the bedside — such a thoughtful touch for modern travelers. It was our baby’s first time trying a warm indoor pool (bathing suits required), and we really enjoyed watching him explore. I personally used the sauna, and it was fantastic — guests are allowed to be nude in the sauna (as is common in Europe), and the heat was intense in the best way after pouring water over the stones. You can go to the spa and sauna areas wearing the provided bathrobes and slippers, which was super convenient and relaxing. There’s even an outdoor lounge area with sofas — a great place to cool down and unwind. The underground parking garage felt very secure with a locked gate, and parking was included, which we really appreciated. We were delighted to learn the hotel has over 100 years of history. Yes, some parts show signs of age — like worn curtains, peeling paint, or a faded sign — but that honestly didn’t bother us at all. The charm and comfort far outweigh any cosmetic flaws. Huge thanks to Ms. Laura, who arranged our room so professionally — the baby crib was ready, and everything was clean and well-prepared. The glass-bottled water and lovely-scented shampoo and body wash were also nice touches. We had such a pleasant stay and truly hope to return in the future. Highly recommended, especially for families with young children looking for something cozy with character!

The atmosphere is enhanced by nostalgic tunes playing softly in the background, creating a warm vibe perfect for unwinding after a long day. The food was great. Good German food with generous portions at a good price. The service was friendly and helpful. A fair amount of stairs if you don't sit on the ground floor to inform those who cannot do stairs as the toilets are upstairs too and tiny.

I fell in love with this place. Ate there twice in a week. Their "Himmel und ääd" (black pudding, caramalised apple & mash) defies description, as do their trout rillettes. Add their draught Bitburger beer & a cosy, friendly atmsophere, and this place is a stunner. All at a very reasonable price too.

The service is not of the highest quality but the blood pudding is excellent. Better to make a reservation or to arrive early. If they forget the bread on your table, do ask for it and it's better to order your coffee after the meal somewhere else.

I visited this place on a Thursday evening. The tables outside were almost out, and inside there was plenty of room, there’s also a second floor where the more space and where the toilets are. I took a cozy table close to the entrance and right in front of the bar. The atmosphere was really nice, great music was playing on the background, with some oldies to make all come together with the place style. To my surprise this was not just another bar or restaurant. It was a bit more. A place full of history. It turns out that “The Postwagen” is the only historical wooden structure in the imperial city, because the construction of wooden houses was banned after the dev- astating fire in 1656 (you can read more of the history on one of the photos on the review). I asked the waiter for a local beer, he told me that they did not have but could offer me one from 10km away from Aachen. I liked the beer so much that I ended up ordering again the same. I asked for the menu to see the dishes and found a appetizers and a good variety of German dishes. I’d have liked more options on appetizers though. So I enjoyed my second beer with a appetizer that I’ve never tried before called “Bread with wild garlic nut butter and mustard cucumbers”. The mustard cucumbers were something interesting. Although, the food was great. They serve typical German food with generous portions. Appetizers were cheap and dishes were fair to a bit expensive The staff was friendly and helpful. I payed with cash, but I believe that cards were also accepted! === A bit of history if you are interested… The Postwagen is the only historical wooden structure in the imperial city, because the construction of wooden houses was banned after the devastating fire in 1656. The Postwagen owes its present name to the citizens of Aachen, who saw a resemblance in the structural appearance to a post wagon. Prior to this, since the 18th century, it was the book seller Freyaldenhoven who gave this building, which stood in the shadow of the Granus Tower, its name, Tradition has it that Freyaldenhoven picked the nickname "Vellespejjel" because although he was a bookseller, he could not read and "read" the wildest stories to his customers from books that sounded completely different when read the next time. He calculated the books according to weight. His fantasy and ability to entertain people with made-up stories and jokes, enjoyed great popularity. The days of book selling were over and Georg Buchmeier open the Postwagen in September 1902 as a cosy restaurant for residents, students, artists and visitors to the city. It became the historic meeting place in Aachen - a restaurant filled with cheery drinks and convivial company.

Amazing Food - Excellent service - very loud At the weekend they only offered menus which was fine by us. The food was very delicious and artistic, every dish was on point. The service lady was very attentive and funny. But it was super loud in the dining room with all tables full, an open kitchen door and music, it was almost impossible to have a normal conversation. That was the only negative point for us. We will definitely come back :)
Anouk B — Google review
We came on a weekend so no tasting menu were available. (It would have been nice though) Service was very good! At one point the waiter asked what languages I spoke (other than English) and I said mandarin, she offered the menu in mandarin, so menu comes in multiple languages here ^^ We went with 3 course menu each of us and got different things to share of course. Scallops 👍🏻 The Iberico steak was definitely the highlight for me! 😋 The wine was also very nice! Everything was good! I've had better Tarte tatin in France of course but hey! It was still good! And I know where I am so everything met the expectation 😎 Definitely recommend ~ it was good time spent!

Very professional and attentive service. To begin with, I ordered a glass of Riesling from Rheingau. The waitress poured me a sample of wine to taste and I found it wasn't cold enough so she shortly came back with a new bottle just out of the fridge. My husband and I both ordered the three-course menu. We liked the "menu options " they offer. Instead of English, I tried Chinese and finally, I chose German. They even have Japanese. Serving time, and portions were just right(for my husband😅) After the desserts I could hardly get up from the chair. After all, we had a very lovely evening at this place. Thanks to the One & Only team. 😁

Everything was sublime, the chef is very young and talented, her food is out of this world, the presentation of each dish was more than perfect and so delicious!!! The service on point, our waitress was very polite, friendly and could speak our 3 languages, the place in general is very clean, quiet, just a perfect place in every way!!

The place is cosy and comfortable. The staff is overall very friendly, polite and doesnt mind to speak English. It was professional at all times. The vine menu is well assorted and so are the spirits. The menu has an easy set up and is not overloaded on dishes ( menus in multiple languages available) The food is made very well with good flavors and nicely served .

German restaurant
Rose am Dom is a historic restaurant located in the center of town with a rich history dating back to 1350. The food is described as fresh and delicious, with generous portions. While some visitors found the staff to be accommodating and helpful, others experienced communication issues due to the staff primarily speaking German. Despite this, many patrons praised the excellent service and variety of menu options available in English.
Excellent service and we loved the traditional style, it has that breath of the past. Fresh flowers at the table too. Most of the places where we've been in Germany and Netherlands had plastic. So, nice effort. The food was really delicious. I had an excellent roast beef, and others the Viener Schnitzels that they really liked. Certainly a recommendation.
Andreas V — Google review
Restaurant with a great atmosphere. We were a very large group for supper and the waiting time was long, we got the cream soup an hour and a half after ordering. The main meal was almost immediately after eating the cream soup, it's okay. Service in English at a very good level. The chestnut cream was delicious, it was the first time I ate something like this and I was positively surprised. Main course - steak. The service did not ask us about the level of doneness of the meat. Despite this, it was delicious. Huge portion! Dessert average, did not suit me. Overall, I rate the stay very good and give a strong 4!

The food was good, but we had an incident. We had to pay the same price for a glass of water as a beer. We ate at this restaurant twice and realized that the second drink never appeared on the receipt. They added it manually. Maybe they wanted to secure a tip. Be careful!

I visited with 3. All of them had small stomach, so I ate 2 full and 2 half dishes. Every single one is enough to fill one, so they ain't small. Proves how great the cook is, but it appears they switch them depending on the day.

Food was good, portions large, price European (12 euros for salad and pasta). Our host seemed to know about every third person that walked by (we ordered, were served, and ate outside) and when I enquired, I learned that most customers are regular. The owner greeted the seven year old in our party personally. He is Italian and his wife Greek, and hence good things come from their union. I recommend the place. Small restroom was clean. But if you are language challenged, "her..." is men and "d...men" is ladies. No pictures will give you a hint. I guessed and, well, learned.

Day 3

Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like The Three Country Point NL / BE / DE and Katschhof and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

Park
The Three Country Point NL / BE / DE is a picturesque woodland area where the borders of the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium meet. At this convergence point stands a monument marking the spot. Just southwest of Aachen, this location is situated at the summit of Vaalserberg, which is also the highest point in mainland Netherlands at 320 meters. Visitors can partake in the classic gesture of linking hands across borders here.
It's a great view. Be sure to climb the tower. It is a place where you will have a pleasant time.

Wonderful place to view Belgium, Holland and Germany from. Car parking at Bistro and acces to a viewing platform of the The Country Point. Get token from Bistro. We then walked up along the German Netherlands border up to Belgium. A real novelty. Good value for money. Both viewing platforms had lift access. Fantastic. Plenty more to do there too like the maze/labyrinth, walks of varying length around the woodland. Really recommend. Good value day out.
Lynette B — Google review
Beautiful place to see the borders of 3 countries. You should visit this place only if the weather is good without wind and rain. Otherwise you have not the best view.
Farzaneh A — Google review
The place is beautiful, wonderful, and quite cold as it’s high up on the mountain. We went by taxi and returned by bus to Aachen Hauptbahnhof. A cool spot to hang out, take pics, and enjoy nature. The view is amazing and the area is peaceful. Definitely worth a visit!
Vivek V — Google review
Was here for more than 20yr ago. That time only two bautas; the 3 point and highest point in the Nederland. Now the area has been well developed and we enjoyed the stay here. The view from the tower is fantastic, you can as long as your eyes reach. Bring your binoculars if you have. The tower also have the elevator, so also wheelchairs and other with walking problems can watch the nice view. They have also two restaurants, souvenir shop and the nice maze. Parking is also good, but the information how to get in is bad. No sign or instruction. This should be improved. Can warmly recommend this place.
Frank J — Google review
It was an awesome experience , i went there twice already. The view on the hill is beautifull and you can stand on 3 countries in just a step 😍
Susana R — Google review
Extremely HYPED of a place, even for only one time visit! Overly crowded on ALL days. It's shocking how 1000s of gullible people visit this super tiny little place. This "point" is situated in a middle of a narrow road with car traffic continuously flowing. Parking on the Belgian side is more expensive than parking on the Netherlands side (no surprises here!). Belgian parking costs 3.5 per hour, whereas Netherlands side parking costs 3 for the day. There are some places to eat. The Labyrinth is also one other attraction with kind of heafty entry fee (not value for money). My suggestion is to visit any other border points with way less crowd.
Soham B — Google review
It is a fun experience. For me. international borders always meant like a comparatively huge thing and visiting this point was really fascinating. Getting here is a little bit tricky if you are coming by public transport and travel time is long if you are coming from Amsterdam just for this but overall definitely worth to visit.

Dat Frittebüdche is a must-visit spot for those seeking a delightful snack experience. With its shabby yet charming atmosphere and excellent service, it offers the best fries in town. While it competes with AKL for the title of best Schawarma in Aachen, Dat Frittebüdche stands out for its delectable sauces.

Terrible food. 7 months ago, I posted a review in Google that this restaurant serves "Tasty samosas". Now I must correct my old review. Today I visited this place. The "vegan teller" which I ordered was terrible in taste, grilled meat smell in Zuchini, French fries soaked in salty tomato sauce and the dish was incomplete and undercooked. I also order vegetable samosas (vegetarisch sambusa), the samosas were too oily. The interesting part is, they cooked and served me samosas with a paper sticking to the samosa. When I asked about it, the cook or the server was not interested to respond. They took my plate inside to the kitchen before any other customer saw my plate. I will definitely not recommend this place. The place ofcourse offers low price food. Which attracts many students. But I suggest everyone to avoid this place anymore, to avoid any further food poisoning to you, your friends and relatives. They have stopped caring about their food quality. Which is a basic criteria for any food serving place.

Wine bar
Nestled next to the charming Eulenspiegel House, Ghorban Delikatessen Weinbar & Catering is a delightful haven for lovers of Mediterranean cuisine. This classy deli and wine bar offers an impressive array of antipasti, from savory canapés topped with Pancetta Lardo to stuffed vine leaves brimming with rice and millet. Guests can also indulge in homemade aioli, customizing its spiciness to their liking.
With the street fair in old town, we were lucky to have gotten in before they stopped serving food. We ordered a Burrata salad plate (for 1) that also had ham. Excellent. We also ordered a meat and cheese platter (for 1). The selection of food and its preparation and presentation was excellent for both plates. Top it off with a great inexpensive bottle of Douro wine and it was an excellent dinner. We sat inside at a cozy high top table and listened to 80s pop music. The waitress was so helpful and absolutely lovely. Her English was great and she made us feel glad to be there. The man behind the counter that created all the plates is extremely conscientious with his food prep and changed his gloves and several times. Great eye for food plate detail and design. We were so glad we choose to eat here on our short stay in Aachen!

I recently visited this deli and was impressed by the casual yet beautiful interior decor. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious, with an emphasis on quality and origin. The prices are reasonable, however, the selection for vegans is limited. Overall, I highly recommend this deli for those looking for tasty food, but vegans should be aware of the limited options.

Relaxed atmosphere, lovely service and last but not least impeccable ingredient quality. The kind of food where they can not hide, everything needs to be top notch and it is. From the olive oil, to the balsamico, cheese, breads, antipastis and also the coffee. We will be back.

The Spanish wine we had, I don't think a bottle would cost more than three euros in the supermarket. Overall, 35 euros for two glasses of wine and a starter. The starter was good, though. Way too pricey for Aachen and the quality they offer. I will not repeat.

I have hardly anything good to say about our experience. First of all, we waited 1.5 hours for our food. Secondly, the onions had a weird smell like they had been left next to raw meat. Some of the meat (the lamb) had no taste at all. Some tasted like the freezer (the speise). The gyros was the only tasty thing about our meal. We didn't finish it and threw most of it out. It was definitely not worth the money we paid for it.
