The Palazzo dei Papi di Viterbo, also known as the Papal Palace, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in the Lazio region. Built between 1255 and 1266 to house popes seeking refuge in Viterbo, it features decorative stonework and frescoes that showcase its historical significance. The palace's elegant seven-arched loggia and a charming courtyard with city views make it a must-see attraction.
Beautiful and very interesting. The lady at the counter was extremely polite and patient. There is an audioguide included in the price and there's a lot of information you can learn about this beautiful medieval complex.

So much to look at inside ! Staff are very helpful, they give you an ear piece so you can find out about all the history of the rooms choose your language. The grounds and views are amazing!

The Palazzo dei Papi is one of Viterbo’s most important monuments, built when Pope Alexander IV (1254-1261) moved the papal curia to Viterbo in 1257 and had the former bishop’s palace expanded. The palace includes the famous Aula del Conclave, which hosted the longest papal election in history, lasting about 33 months! You and get a ticket, and audio guide, for a very reasonable €10 which gives you access to the museum, cathedral and Palazzo. The audio tour is very detailed and a map is provided which shows the main points of the locations.

Great place to visit of historic interest. The combined Viterbo Pass gives access to other city museums including the Town hall with stunning artworks and frescoes.

The Papal Palace in Viterbo hosts an exhibition that captures the first conclave (literally "under lock and key") that was held starting in 1268AD and took nearly three years to select the new Pope. That was Gregory X, who then ordered that the conclave method be used for future selection. It's very well done, including multilanguage commentary, VR, and animation to tell the story, and a must visit for History buffs and for Catholics interested in key stages in the development of the church.

The Palazzo dei Priori is a significant monument in the city, serving as the town hall and boasting a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Upon entering through its portico, visitors are greeted by a spacious courtyard featuring a striking 1600s fountain. The noble floor houses the private chapel adorned with remarkable frescoes dedicated to the Virgin and an exquisite Visitation by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi at its center.
Beautiful place to visit and dive into the history of the palace.

A great little museum - we practically had it all to ourselves! A cute house and some nice artwork to view. Makes you understand how important Viterbo once was. Staff were very friendly and engaging with good English. Audio guide limited but available, the pronunciation on it and number of items was not great. All in all a cute place to visit.

Worth a visit because of the two masterpieces of Sebastiano del Piombo
Aviad K — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to this museum. Stefano did a great job making us feel welcome and explaining the museum. The two altarpieces by Sebastiano del Piombo were incredible, and it was fun to wander the building to see the beautiful frescoes and paintings on the ceilings. It is absolutely worth a visit whilst in Viterbo.

Sagrestia del Duomo di San Lorenzo is a must-see attraction located next to San Pellegrino in Viterbo. It offers the most famous view of the city, often depicted on postcards. The sacristy's decoration was completed in 1795 with funding from Cardinal Muzio Gallo, and its medieval atmosphere will transport you back in time.
(Translated by Google) The decoration work on this beautiful sacristy was completed in 1795 with funding from Cardinal Muzio Gallo, then bishop of Viterbo, as also recalled by the inscription above the entrance door. The wall cladding is in walnut, while the decoration of the vault provides an accentuated perspective illusionism linked to the use of converging lines and the tapering of the fake coffers. The sacristy can be visited with the €9 cumulative ticket which also allows you to see the Museum, the Duomo and the Palazzo dei Papi.

Italy's history, and especially it's religious history can often whisk you back two thousand years in tome, and the Sacristy, part of the Cathedral complex does just that. A fine collection of early Catholic reliquaries and original marbles as well as a beautiful sacristy, professionally laid out by experts is unmissable for history buffs visiting Viterbo, the city of the Pope's, and home of the first Papal conclave.

The National Etruscan Museum Rocca Albornoz in Viterbo offers a fascinating journey into the ancient origins of the city, focusing on Etruscan archaeology. Visitors can explore the spectacular necropolis of Castel d'Asso with its tombs carved into the rock and visit Cava di Sant'Antonio, a narrow path carved into tufa by the Etruscans. The museum houses several works of art found in these locations and others discovered later.
During my visit to the beautiful city of Viterbo, I had the pleasure of exploring the National Etruscan Museum located within the impressive Albornoz Fortress. As I stepped inside the fortress, I was immediately struck by the incredible architecture and rich history that surrounded me. The fortress itself was a fascinating sight to behold, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I wandered through its winding passages and expansive courtyards. The fact that it was originally constructed in 1354 by Cardinal Gil Alvarez Carillo de Albornoz, who was the general vicar of the Church domains, only added to its historical significance and charm. As I made my way through the museum's stunning collection of Etruscan artifacts, I was impressed by the intricate detail and exquisite craftsmanship that went into each piece. From intricate gold jewelry and delicate pottery to impressive bronze sculptures and beautifully preserved frescoes, there was no shortage of breathtaking treasures to discover. One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to learn more about the Etruscan civilization and its fascinating history. Through the museum's informative exhibits and interactive displays, I gained a deeper appreciation for this ancient culture and the significant impact it had on the development of Italy and the Mediterranean world. Overall, my visit to the National Etruscan Museum was a truly unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Viterbo. The combination of stunning architecture, rich history, and remarkable artifacts make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, culture, and history.

Nice to see more details to fill in the blanks on many of the Etruscan sites we have visited. Staff was very friendly.
Dale N — Google review
Good museum covering the Etruscans very well. An easy visit for those not too museumy in that it is not too large. For me the key finds were the 2500 years old decorated terracotta roof tiles, far better than anything produced today and the small statue of Demeter dug up from the actual temple it adorned only a few miles away.

Chiesa di San Pellegrino is a historic church located in the medieval quarter of Viterbo, known for its well-preserved stone houses, original external staircases, and ancient lanes. The church overlooks the square of the same name and is one of the oldest monuments in Viterbo, with mentions dating back to 1045. While its facade was renovated in 1889, much of its medieval structure was destroyed during World War II bombings.
(Translated by Google) The small Church of San Pellegrino is located in the historic center of Viterbo in the square of the same name in the predominantly medieval neighborhood of the same name (12th and 13th centuries). The religious building is known through documents written as early as 1045, and was then restored over the centuries, with the definitive one after the Second World War due to the very serious damage caused by bombing. The façade of the church is developed in a neo-Gothic style with a gable roof, and we can consider it to have two orders considering two cornices jutting out from the top of the lateral pillars, connected by a pointed arch. At the center of the first order there is a monumental Renaissance wooden portal, which can be reached by a staircase, surmounted by a semicircular pediment, above which there is an elegant rose window. In the second order a rectangular bas-relief representing a coat of arms. The interior has a single nave, with an exposed wooden trussed ceiling, there are some traces of frescoes dating back to the 15th century. The presbytery dates back to 1945 with a bare and modern appearance, its altarpiece (from 1979) is a copy of the painting depicting San Pellegrino and Angels (by Vincenzo Strigelli from the 18th century) which was unfortunately destroyed during the aforementioned bombings.

Possibly nicer from the outside, as part of the square it's in and the whole neighborhood. Like all the other monuments/points of interest in the city centre there's a long explanation panel just outside. Some frescoes are still there too.
Giulia — Google review
This historical church located in the square that shares the same name seems very picturesque, but is actually really charming. In the morning there's a beam of light that comes in the church and to the pews that is definitely heaven sent. A must see in Viterbo.

Interesting in its simplicity, with interiors that time has deprived of historical frescoes, following renovations over the course of its long history. It is decorated in a particular way for specific events in the area. But it is worth a visit at any time of the year. The nativity scene is beautiful during the Christmas period. (Translated by Google) Although the Church of San Pellegrino is certainly among the oldest monuments of the city of Viterbo, so much so that it was mentioned for the first time in a deed of 1045 as belonging to the jurisdiction of the Abbey of San Martino al Cimino, today it retains very little of the original appearance. Its Romanesque structural layout was partly canceled in 1889 when a new neo-Gothic façade was erected. Then came an almost deadly blow in May 1944: during the Second World War Viterbo was bombed and, as also happened to other important monuments of the city, this Church suffered very heavy damage. It was reopened for worship only in 1951. And yet, despite the centuries and the men, a testimony of the medieval church still survives: a stupendous fresco, dating back to the 15th century, by an unknown author, depicting the Annunciation. Precious historical memory. Preziosa memoria storica.

The current façade dates back to 1889 and very little remains of its medieval features also due to the bombings of the Second World War. Inside, the presence of frescoes dating from 1400 to 1700 is interesting. A work that deserves to be remembered is The Annunciation dating back to the 15th century. Ristorante Tre Re Viterbo is a charming, family-run restaurant with a rich history dating back to 1622. Located in the ancient Etruscan town of Vulci, it is said that the devil built it in one night due to its impressive architecture. The restaurant's sign, painted by a local artist, depicts three kings and adds to its traditional charm. Guests can enjoy authentic local dishes in a cozy and intimate dining room while receiving excellent service.
Very nice Trattoria. The prices were very reasonable and we enjoyed two bistecche and Fettuccine al Ragú with a bottle of Chianti wine for about €40. The server was very kind and patient. The food was tasty, especially the pasta and the restaurant was full of old friends chatting away and enjoying a nice meal. This made for a beautiful environment.

We visited the place yesterday. I had a previous experience last year from the restaurant. I can say it was much better last year. No English speakers or even if they do we were not invited to have one for our needs. The attitude of the owner was really bad. She was literally arrogant with us. And didn't try to help us with. Let's say the restaurant was good but only with locals.

Went a little before 730. Rude. Came back after they opened around 745. Was told I can’t be seated because completely booked. It’s now an hr later and not one person has gone into that restaurant. I’m a black American and I know the rude woman at the front has a nasty attitude as when I walked in again she said something and then went to the back and am older man came out telling me they were booked. It’s unfortunate but as I read these comments I was saved by her rudeness as it seems the food isn’t that good anyways.

Attended 5th January 2024 AVOID THIS PLACE. Staff are soo rude. Shame we had to give the service 1 star. The lady with the Blonde hair was chewing on bread most of the evening and the male front of house (maybe her son?) was too busy pretending he knew about red wine to the locals. Maybe he should concentrate more on the food he’s eventually serving. Food was v poor. Not hot and mostly tinned produce. Bread was stale beyond belief. Atmosphere was similar to a cremation, maybe that’s what happened to the food, certainly was the case with the starters. Such a shame as we have been to a number of other similar restaurants very close by and received wonderfully authentic food and excellent service. We have such great memories created in Viterbo, unfortunately this was also memorable for the wrong reasons. I wouldn’t go back here unless you paid me.

Charming, traditional, family run restaurant with authentic local dishes. We enjoyed our evening meal so much we returned with a friend a few nights later. Delicious food and wine in a cosy, intimate dining room. Excellent service. The very handsome son recommended we try the cherry tart, he was not wrong. One of the best deserts I’ve ever eaten, anywhere, especially when paired with a ( recommended) local desert wine. Viterbo serves up excellent food and this restaurant is one of Viterbo’s gems. Highly recommended.

We found the people in this restaurant to be underhanded. I asked for a dinner menu. I was given a menu with a price of €18 on it. I thought the cost covered the 3 courses on the menu especially as I had asked for a dinner menu. They did not seem to speak much English. When paying the bill the €18 covered the main meal only. We had to pay for starters and desserts and a service charge. There were 3 of us in total. When I queried the bill they got very aggressive, all of a sudden could speak good English and threatened to call the police. I am warning people about their attitude and I would definitely recommend eating anywhere else and not here. Don't support this restaurant.

A wonderful place! We read a lot of positive reviews before coming, and everything turned out even better than we expected. A beautiful terrace, very cozy both inside and outside. And of course, the food was insanely delicious. I highly recommend getting the tasting menu, so you can try several dishes. Osteria del Vecchio Orologio has a rich history spanning 66 years, with Paolo Bianchini taking over in 2004 and earning the trust of locals. He successfully shifted the focus to local wines, a bold move considering the popularity of international varieties at the time. By 2008, the wine list exclusively featured Tuscia labels, and through collaboration with Fivi, they have expanded to include other fine selections from Lazio.
As for the food, it's definitely worth it. Tagliere chopped salami and cheese (selection of local cold cuts and cheese) was delicious. Supplì really good. Ravioletti had an amazing sauce and interesting taste. Manzetta Maremmana very delicate meat. The atmosphere is like in typical italian restaurant which is nice. The stuff mostly friendly, with rare exceptions, but it's not worth the emphasis

We had high hopes for this restaurant given its reputation and the many accolades plastered on the doors, but overall the experience didn’t live up to expectations. The service was unfriendly and dismissive, which set the tone for the meal. At one point, our placemats were left oily from the plates, and despite us gesturing, mentioning they were dirty, and even stacking them at the front of the table, the staff never replaced them. Instead, we sat through dessert with greasy, food-stained placemats right in front of us- not exactly the atmosphere you want for enjoying a “fancy” meal. As for the food, there were some hits and some misses. The lamb rib chops were fine but nothing remarkable. Of the pastas we tried, the pesto with hazelnuts was our favorite, while the mushroom pasta was bland and under-salted. The calamari, however, was excellent- fresh, crispy, and elevated by crunchy zucchini and sweet potatoes. Dessert was underwhelming: the “mixed fruit” turned out to be just strawberries, and the tiramisu was cloyingly sweet. Nothing we ate was terrible, but overall the dishes leaned pretentious without delivering. Combined with the poor service, the restaurant simply didn’t live up to the hype or the glowing reviews.

Buongusto Piadineria artigianale e Stuzzicheria is a centrally located eatery offering a choice of three doughs for their piadina, made with organic soft wheat, whole grain Khorasan wheat, or classic. The owner, Matteo Carbone, presents a wide range of fillings and allows for customization using locally sourced ingredients. They also serve folded piadinas with double fillings as well as salmon or chicken poke and bowls.
This place is amazing. The piadina's you can buy here are out of this world. Highly recommended.
